Universal Fine Wine & Spirits Offers Variety, Great Customer Service & Affordable Prices By Julie Kanehl Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, also known as Universal Liquors, has been providing local residents with an amazing selection of wine, beer and liquor for nearly ten years. Today, this family owned and operated liquor store has an online store as well, and is well known by locals for providing everyday low prices on everything from craft beers to their favorite name brand whiskeys. Whether you’re looking to pick up the usual staples or are looking to spice things up with something fun and frivolous, you’ll find everything you need at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, which is located on U.S. Hwy 19 in Holiday, just a few miles from Tarpon Springs, East Lake,

Trinity and New Port Richey. Their convenient location, their generous hours of operation and the fact that they are open 365 days a year, makes Universal Liquors a real favorite for many, and that word of mouth has been the key to what has made Universal Fine Wine & Spirits so successful over the last ten years. Owner Rob Janevski says, “We pick up a lot of business because of word of mouth and because of our customer service. We’ll take the time to help customers find what they’re looking for.” One customer recently said, “This is the best liquor store around. They have a little bit of everything.” See “Universal FWS” on page 42.

You may not realize this, but right next to Universal Fine Wine & Spirits in Holiday is the hottest bar in town. We’re talking a jaw dropping atmosphere with hipster flair, DJs, live music, couches and lounge chairs, a pool table, cool people and over 250 brands of liquor, wine and beer all in one place. From the outside, Orbit 19 is pretty much a blank slate, a mystery, and for years I know I drove right by. Those days are over, my friend, because Orbit 19 is where it’s at. Located at 1542 US Hwy 19

in Holiday, its otherworldly feel takes you miles away from Pasco County and straight into orbit. It’s not just me that seems to think so either. Orbit 19, which was built from the ground-up and is owned by the same family that opened Universal Fine Wine & Spirits in 2003, has been winning awards for its unique bar experience for years. In fact, Creative Loafing has given Orbit 19 a few of their coveted “Best of the Bay” awards in categories such as Best Kept Secret, Best Night Life in Pasco and Best Pickup Spot. of Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, says, “A lot of people who have come to the store for years have no idea that we have a lounge. When they see it they all say, ‘This isn’t at all what I expected!’ ” Dadia Janevska, Manager and Events Director at Orbit 19, has created an upscale bar environment that caters to a clientele who prefer premium well drinks and top shelf liquor to the cheap stuff. Behind the simple façade, Orbit 19 is classy, eclectic and, frankly, a whole lot of fun. Rob says, “[Orbit 19] is a laid back kind of lounge where people can sit, drink and socialize.” The reviews for Orbit 19 are pretty stellar, and many of their regulars can’t stop raving about it. East Lake High School FIRST® Team KRUNCH 79 Robot Frisbee Frenzy Debut After a six-week build season, the members of East Lake High School FIRST® Robotics Team KRUNCH 79 introduced their robot, KRUNCH 16, during Media Night on Monday, February 18th in the high school gymnasium. “Media Night,” said team President and senior student Richie Vitraelli, “is the first time the community gets a taste of what we will accomplish this season by demonstrating our robot playing this year’s game.” That game, ‘Ultimate Ascent,’ is this year’s competition challenge, a game that combines the skills of ultimate Frisbee and disc golf. In order to be eligible to participate in the competitions, robots must meet stringent requirements including height, weight, materials, and other variables set forth by FIRST®. According to Vitraelli, “The challenge was to build a robot capable of launching a Frisbee upwards of 20-30 feet across the field into one of three goals. The higher the goal, the more points the team will

score. The robot also has to ascend a pyramid to reach a maximum height of ten feet, climbing three feet at a time.” FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students or more are challenged to build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. Celebrating their 16th season in FIRST®, Members Team KRUNCH 79 are students who are currently enrolled in the Academy of Engineering at East Lake High School. Their first regional competition will take place in Orlando at the University of Central Florida in early March. Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes - Making Life a Little Sweeter By Dara Tucker Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened the original store in Trinity, off Old CR 54 in February of 2010. Jessica worked for The Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Florida for over 13 years. Jess was versatile in many of the daily resort operations, but primarily focused on food and beverage, which is her passion. As a mom who lives locally in the Trinity area, she initially wanted to open an affordable neighborhood ice cream shop that caters to the budget of the average family. She never thought the demand of her sweet treats would have her baking full time and leaving the job she was loyal to at Innisbrook. Cupcakes were originally intended to be a side item, or an alternative to ice cream, and were first baked in her toaster oven! When Jess sold over 300 cupcakes the first week of her business, she knew she would need a larger oven to keep up with the demand. Word of mouth

10

and a Facebook page spread the news, as well as the popularity of such TV shows as DC cupcakes on TLC and Cupcake Wars on Food Network. Little could Jess have imagined that three years later word of her delicious cupcakes would lead to a total of three stores, serving Eastlake/Palm Harbor, Trinity/New Port Richey, and Lutz/Land O’Lakes areas. Sugardarlings serves between 15 to 20 different flavors of cupcakes daily, and they bake throughout the day to keep the customers smiling, and

their sweet tooth satisfied. Jess’s Award Winning Peanut Butter S’mores was just recently honored The Best Cupcake in St.Pete, and locally Sugardarlings was voted Best Dessert, Best Kept Secret and Best Bakery in the Suncoast. The cupcake taste combinations are both delicious and fun.

Owner Roxana Rotaru feels blessed that her Budget Blinds business is growing through referrals after just one year in business. Roxana says her goal has been to grow her business through a great reputation and from referrals from happy customers. “It makes me feel great to be able to say I am successful because of word-of-

mouth,” says Roxana. “My best achievement is that I am getting leads this way. My customers are amazing people and I feel so rewarded for having connected to absolutely wonderful people.” The first step in deciding if you want to work with Roxana is to have a free consultation. Once she knows what your tastes and specific needs are, she can help you narrow down your choices and will help you choose. Roxana will be with you throughout the entire process, from the decision making process of choosing the right window coverings to making sure that installers are providing stellar service. “I am committed,” promises Roxana. “I will make sure the job is properly done.” Customers Recommend Budget Blinds of Tarpon Springs Mike F. of Tarpon Springs called Roxana at Budget Blinds when they decided to update their home. “Our home is 20 years old and the window coverings were falling apart,” says Mike. “We have arched windows that I thought were going to be pretty difficult but the Hunter Douglas wooden shades that we ordered are quite stun-

ning and fit perfectly. Roxana was enjoyable to work with and her installer is really fast and efficient.” Highland Lakes resident Joan E. says, “Roxana is a great gal and she does a great job! Everything was above-and-beyond my expectation. In fact, I’m having some further remodeling done and when it is finished, I will be calling Roxana at Budget Blinds to do some more work.” Ron S. sums up his experience working with Roxana, “She was just excellent in every respect.” East Lake resident Janet B. called upon Roxana to help find the perfect wood woven blinds for her beautiful enclosed lanai and matching panels for her family room. Janet says, “The blinds are lovely! Roxana came personally to check on the progress, and she was always available by phone. I had a problem with one of the blinds and they came out immediately and took care of it.” Budget Blinds Quality “Budget Blinds is the number one franchised provider in the industry,” says Roxana. “I know the prices, for the quality, are the best – there is no one who can offer the same quality

and brands that Budget Blinds has at a lower price.” That isn’t to say that you can’t find cheaper products, but Roxana warns that even though they may look similar, the quality is not the same. She says she has had customers who have used cheaper products and they come to Budget Blinds after they realize that the fabric is wearing out or fraying before it should. “It’s important to be accountable for the “after-sales service!” says Roxana. She explains that sometimes even though the initial price may seem cheaper with a big-name store, it can end up costing more because of the added on surcharges. With Budget Blinds, your price includes everything from start to finish, including the dismantling and hauling away of any old

window coverings. And Roxana explains that with 900+ independently owned Budget Blinds franchises, the company has very strong negotiation powers, so they are able to bring topquality products to customers at a very good price and also a real quality of service. “The vendors that I am using stand behind their products,” says Roxana. “If something is wrong, the vendor will fix it. All of the manufacturers and vendors that Budget Blinds uses have very good long-term warranties.” Every brand that Budget Blinds carries supplies customers with an installation warranty and some even offer life-time warranties. What if something goes wrong or breaks? “First call me,” says Roxana. “But customers also can call the manufacturer

Solutions for Every Window Whether you desire a window treatment that lets the natural light stream in or you need complete privacy, blocking out all light, Budget Blinds has the most innovative, functional and beautiful custom blinds and window coverings on the market. Blinds come in a variety of materials and styles including wood, faux wood, aluminum, composite and vinyl and both vertical and horizontal blinds can be motorized. In fact, all of Budget Blinds’ products can be ordered motorized. “When windows are up so high, it makes sense to get motorized shades, shutters and blinds,” explains Roxana. Shutters include wood, composite or plantation style. You can see examples of shutters that fit arched windows perfectly on Budget Blinds of Tarpon Springs facebook page. Shades are a great choice when you want a softer look and there are

Henry’s Chicago Style – Bringing Home the Taste of Chicago Photos by Brittany Jesek By Fields Puckett Tucked away in the Coral Landings Plaza of Palm Harbor, just off of busy U.S. 19, is Henry’s Chicago Style, a restaurant that is packed with warm, authentic flavor, a comfortable atmosphere and lots of heart. Managing partner Rex Haslam embodies all the styles and attitudes of the quintessential “Chicago dog” experience. His friendly, courteous nature makes every customer who walks in the door feel at home, and this welcoming, comforting experience is at the heart of the Henry’s Chicago Style mission. “All the items on our menu are foods we all [Haslam and his two partners, Mark Haeger and Randi Wille] grew up on,” Haslam says. “In creating Henry’s, we just wanted to revive the foods we had every Saturday and Sunday when we were young— the foods we had gotten on our lunch breaks from school—and bring them here to our new home and community. We want our customers to feel like we did as kids, eating these foods with our families at home in Chicago.”

Henry’s customers are treated to the most authentic Chicago taste possible outside of Cook County with a menu full of favorites from hot dogs and Polish sausage to burgers, Italian beef, a variety of sandwiches and salads, pizza and even dessert! Even the simplest dishes with the least in-house preparation light up the eyes of customers whose memory banks salivate at that particular, nearly impossible-torecreate taste of home. Henry’s 100% Vienna Beef dogs and specialty condiments like neon relish are imported directly from Chicago, and it is this extra push for authenticity that gives Henry’s Chicago Style its distinct advantage in the market. “Our restaurant doesn’t have servers, so by definition we fall into the ‘quick-serve’ category of eateries. But we want customers to know that although we are fast-paced, and traditionally serve Chicago Dogs by-thebook, we are happy to take the time to accommodate our customers.” A traditional Chicago-Style Hot Dog consists of a steamed Vienna Beef

hot dog laid into a gently steamed poppy seed bun. It is then topped with yellow mustard, neon relish, chopped white onions, two tomato wedges, a slice of kosher dill pickle and two sport peppers. This is all sprinkled with a dash of celery salt. The result is undeniably one-of-a-kind. Although the regulations for the authentic ChicagoStyle are strict, Henry’s will gladly edit the toppings for you. “We want customers to understand our food is being made freshly and directly for

you; nothing is pre-prepared and waiting under a hot lamp.” I have had countless hot dogs in baseball parks and backyard barbeques, but Henry’s Chicago Style of Palm Harbor was this reporter’s first Chicago Style Hot Dog experience. It is very safe to say that the two have nothing to do with each other; you do not start analyzing a Chicago Dog based off of your knowledge of regular ballpark franks. A Chicago Style Hot Dog is all about the toppings and the

Hearty burgers with melted American and Swiss cheese are delicious and you can add garlic sautéed mushrooms if you like. Several varieties of chicken sandwiches and subs are on the menu, as well as fresh salads. Another specialty and house favorite is Henry’s Italian Beef with thinly sliced, seasoned beef heated in its own gravy and served on toasted French bread in your favorite way – dipped or dry with peppers. The Italian Sausage also is served on toasted French bread, dipped or dry with peppers; or have both with an Italian Beef & Sausage Combo. The Meatball Sandwich – you can have it with marinara sauce or Italian gravy topped with Parmesan cheese; for an extra 50 cents add melted mozzarella and for an extra 25 cents add mild or hot giardiniera. East Lake Café is a Neighborhood Favorite! By Katie Thomas The East Lake Café has a lot of longtime fans for good reason – consistently excellent food, generous portions, affordable prices and a friendly atmosphere with attentive service. Located in the East Lake Woodlands Shopping Center, this superb eatery has both spacious indoor dining and outdoor patio dining that is dog friendly and complete with clay tabletops, umbrellas, tropical foliage and great music. As part of the Better Business Bureau and Florida Restaurant Association, East Lake Café is a reputable and favorite “Old Fashioned Neighborhood Restaurant” where the bread is fresh baked and fresh whole foods are the order of the day. “I came to Florida because I wanted to spend more time with my family,” says Peter Pergola, who opened the café in July of 2003. “I have been able to watch them grow up and I now have grandchildren. Playful Paws Dog Training Center “A Joyfully Dynamic Experience for You and Your Dog!” By Katie Thomas Playful Paws Dog Training Center, conveniently located right off East Lake Road in Tarpon Springs, is dedicated to enriching the lives of dog owners and their companions through a fun, learning environment that teaches owner and pet to work in unison and harmony. Playful Paws is a full service facility with training, grooming, boarding and daycare. Playful Paws strives to give pups and their owners a well-rounded environment that is safe and can be considered a doggie paradise. Mel and Janice Gavron opened their new training facility that also provides day/night boarding and care this past December and their granddaughter named it Playful Paws Dog Training Center. The Gavrons are originally from Long Island, New York and moved to the area in 1993. Mel and Janice have been married for 45 years, raised a family (now with a grandchild) and found a common love for helping people and their pets. Mel and Janice agree that, “the objective at Playful Paws is to cultivate and optimize each dog’s potential through patience, love, tenderness and positive re-enforcement.” Sarah Holmes, head dog handler, supervises the staff at Playful Paws. I had the chance to meet Sarah and dog handler Devin Lyman; both are passionate and energetic about their work at Playful Paws. Sarah is working towards completing her Veterinarian Assistant Certificate and has worked within the animal industry since she was 16, specifically with cats and dogs. At 18, Sarah was working at a doggie day care and from there she fell in love with the work. Mel considers Sarah a “super groomer,” a skill that has seven years of experience backing it. Devin has six years of training and grooming experience. He says, “We don’t warehouse dogs here. We care for them like they are our children. Because we care, we maintain extremely high standards here at Playful Paws.” The staff at Playful Paws works with all types of dogs in order to help your pooch reach his or her full potential. Whether your dog is timid, rambunctious, anxious or just needs a lesson in manners, the Playful Paws

Spanning six acres, Playful Paws boasts shaded areas, water mist sprays, self-filling water bowls, a swimming pool for when it’s hot, safe plastic equipment, inner and outer fences, plus safety gates. Dogs have numerous activities outdoors and even have an indoor area with mats and pillows dedicated for rest and cooling off from the Florida heat. Playful Paws is very selective in the dogs that are allowed within its boundaries. A dog owner must show proof of up-to-date vaccinations by a veterinarian and must pass a comprehensive temperament test. The goal is to ensure a population of healthy, friendly dogs that can play, romp and enjoy a pleasurable environment. Many dogs are refused admission into Playful Paws because of aggression issues. Most are non-neutered mature males that tend to be more aggressive than their neutered counterparts.

Well-Rounded Training Services: Obedience training is so much more than teaching your dog the basics, such as sit, stay and come (although these are important). Training your dog how to behave in a wellmannered and acceptable way is key at Playful Paws. Obedience training at Playful Paws involves teaching your dog to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior, and instilling behavior that will keep you happy, your pup safe and give your dog an enjoyable life. Playful Paws believes that an obedience trained dog can become a trustworthy “off-leash” dog. A well-socialized dog is accepted as a responsible member of the community and will be happier overall knowing that they are pleasing you and

other people. Kathy Phebus is the lead obedience trainer at Playful Paws. As one of the few individuals in the Tampa Bay area who is authorized to award the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen certificate, you are guaranteed a great training experience with Kathy. Playful Paws encourages you to bring in your pup or dog for obedience training, not only to shape your dog into a well-behaved individual, but also to provide a great bonding experience for you and your pet. Playful Paws also offers agility training for dogs once they have completed obedience training. Agility training is a way to creatively channel a dog’s natural and inherit abilities and energy. The Playful Paws team

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

agrees, “In the wild, dogs have to anticipate and run after their prey, while hurdling boulders, climbing steep slopes, crawling under fallen logs, walking across natural bridges and squeezing through thick brush.” Agility training calls upon these natural instincts and allows your dog to get in tune with their natural abilities and is considered one of the most advanced forms of off-leash training. Alan Silvey, who is well respected in the field, is the lead agility trainer at Playful Paws and is one of the few individuals in the area that has trained championship-winning dogs at Mach and Natch levels. After receiving agility training your dog will have boosted confidence, heightened vigor and sharpened problem-solving capabilities. Trick classes are a great way to teach your dog some new tricks and create a bonding experience. Your dog will love the upbeat class that Kathy Phebus has implemented and you will love having a way to channel your dog’s energy in class and throughout your daily life. Trick classes challenge a dog to fully utilize his/her intellect while constructively building your dog’s confidence. Trick classes are sure to enrich the lives of both you and your best friend. This class proves that an old dog can learn new tricks. The training facility at Playful Paws is completely safe and has regulation grade equipment. The agility field is a complete regulation approved course if you are interested in competition, and you will have a great time working with and timing your dog’s skill and abilities. You can even bring your family and friends to watch

your pooch’s training session because there are several spectator areas designated just for that! Adventure Boot Camp is a unique way to get in shape while reaping the benefits of the goodness of nature and fresh air. It encourages you to connect with other women, enjoy yourself and get the right type of exercise that will boost your confidence and have you feeling fantastic! The feeling of success that comes along with completing the North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp program is unbeatable; you will feel yourself grow stronger and enjoy the inspiration you receive from other women working towards their goals! John Kent, the owner and coach of North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women, has lived in the Tampa Bay area for over 30 years. He

currently lives in Dunedin with his wife, three daughters and son. John has great energy, charisma and charm, and his attitude towards leading a healthy lifestyle is contagious to those who spend time with him. John began his fitness career an unconventional way. He worked as a stage performer and was required to be in top physical condition for his work. John soon discovered the benefits and rewards associated with health and fitness, which led him to pursue his personal training certification and a full-time career in the fitness industry. John has spent a lot of time over the years working one-on-one with people, helping them to stay fit and healthy through exercise and nutrition. North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women sprung forth once John realized he could make a larger impact on the lives of women in the area by implementing a program that is both fun and effective, yet a fraction of the cost of personal training. John will motivate you, guide you and encourage you along your journey

for better health. You will benefit from John’s experience in studying the body and what exercises and nutritional intake work best for weight loss and toning up. You will never get bored at Adventure Boot Camp because John knows the importance of keeping it fresh. Instead of long duration, repetitive exercises that can get boring, John has designed a program that is constantly changing in order to create a “metabolic disturbance” within your body. “Every day is different,” explains John. “We change activities about every 5-7 minutes. Our goal is to help you burn fat and tone you up. A metabolic disturbance is created through resistance training and interval training. The key is to never allow your body to become acclimated to the activities being performed. Boot camp has to be fun! My goal is to make it the best hour in your whole day. I believe this is fundamental for long term success.” John’s “no excuses” promise is as follows, “In my 14+ years of fitness training, I’ve heard every excuse in the

book. But it doesn’t matter what your excuse is or if you’ve tried and failed in the past, I will inspire you and give you the hope and belief you need John Kent to succeed. If you give me 5 days a week, for the next 4 weeks, you will lose weight, make new friends and get stronger. And you will have the best time doing it!” Each boot camp program consists of 4 weeks. You can choose the 5-daya-week or 3-day-a-week package. Classes meet at 5:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. John begins every boot camp session with a nutrition seminar and a supermarket tour with boot camp attendees to help get them started on the right track. John’s “Simple Steps” eating plan will help you make healthy decisions and form eating habits that ulti-

mately work hand-in-hand with boot camp activities for weight loss results. At Adventure Boot Camp you are guaranteed to lose inches off your body, improve at least 25% in strength and endurance, gain confidence, eat better, make new friends to share your struggles and triumphs with, develop key nutritional habits to easily maintain throughout your life, look better, feel better and succeed in your goals. And you will have a blast doing it! I had a chance to attend one of John’s 9 a.m. classes at the park and my experience was incredible. John is upbeat the entire hour of boot camp and his motivation really makes time fly by. We performed all kinds of fun activities designed to get us leaner and firmer. We had camp in the shade of beautiful Florida oaks. It was a great start to my day! Joining in with the other women at camp to work towards a common fitness goal was fun. Instead of spending an hour alone at the gym, I had the chance to work out in a group and really enjoy the morning. We performed interval training to great music and John’s fun attitude kept everyone moving. He told me to go at my own pace, since it was my first time at camp and for every exercise John offered modifications to make it easier or harder for each woman in attendance. It felt great

to get up and move with a group of women who were fun. At Adventure Boot Camp, you will find your fitness level and John wants everyone to be comfortable and safe. During one of the exercises I realized I joined a group who ran a little faster than I was comfortable with and John kindly directed me to the group who were more my speed. That is what makes Adventure Boot Camp so wonderful; all the women working out together are on different fitness levels, so you can find your pace and still feel like part of the group. Adventure Boot Camp enthusiast, Tracy Scheffler says, “I was turning 50 and had no energy. I couldn't be like that anymore. The gym was so boring and I never saw results. And working out at home by myself was so unmotivating. Then I tried John's Adventure Boot Camp. It was so much fun and I lost 34 pounds in 6 months. Now, I buy size 4 clothes. My husband is ecstatic!” Another boot camp lover, Julie Wooten says, “At Boot Camp, the women encourage one another. We're each other's biggest cheerleaders. I've met the best people. John sets a positive upbeat tone and is always introducing new exercises. Every day is a great day at Boot Camp.” Let John help you reach your fit-

ness and nutrition goals. The time is right now to get into the best shape of your life. You will love the all-women and the upbeat vibe! The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group “Your Partners in Tax & Retirement Planning” By Kim Thomas With the deadline for filing 2012 tax returns looming, it is the perfect time for those age 60 or older to take advantage of a flat-rate $69 fee to have their income taxes prepared and filed with a company that is trusted for going the extra mile for its clients. “As we age our tax returns become simpler, so why pay what everyone else does?” says owner, Ed Rizzotto. The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, founded in 2006 by Edward G. Rizzotto, is much more than just a tax preparation firm – the company is comprised of a team of experts in the fields of taxes, finance, insurance and law who are dedicated to helping retirees save money on their taxes, protect their assets, and prepare for a comfortable future. With an uncertain economy in our future, many retirees and baby boomers are concerned about whether their pensions and retirement savings will last the rest of their lives. Whether you are already a retiree, or within five or ten years of retiring, you need to know how to protect your money and understand how tax laws will affect your retirement. In addition, there are often legitimate adjustments that can be made now to reduce tax liabilities of which many people are unaware. Not Just For Retirees Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group extends their $69 flat-rate fee for federal tax returns (state returns are included if applicable) to government employees and municipal workers, teachers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and now active and retired military personnel of any age. They also pro-

38

Edward G. Rizzotto vide tax services to baby boomers and those nearing retirement who may still be working. With tax laws changing every day it is nearly impossible for the average individual to keep up. Seemingly subtle changes in tax laws can make a big difference in tax liability, and thankfully, not always in a negative way. Ed Rizzotto explains, “ It is imperative that baby boomers who are age 59 ½ or older, and still working be aware of how the Pension Protection Act signed into law August 17, 2006 changed the rules governing IRA’s, 401(k)’s, 403(b)’s & 457 plans and what they must know to protect them and their family.” It is also important for people to know about recent laws passed by the Department of Labor as they relate to disclosure of fees within employer retirement plans. These fees now must be disclosed to both employers and employees. Most people don’t know what they are paying in fees. I want to make my clients aware of the laws.” The Rizzotto Team Ed grew up in Pinellas County

and went to work in the family construction business straight out of high school. During that time, he also earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and, soon after, obtained the necessary licenses to enter the insurance and financial services industry. He started his new career as an agent for Allstate Insurance Company, where he worked for many years and was promoted to Agency Management, responsible for overseeing 22 agencies in Southwest Florida. Ed also served as both active and reserve duty in the U.S. Coast Guard for 13 years. In 1999, he joined a local retirement planning firm, where he helped hundreds of retirees over 6 years. He enjoyed the opportunity to benefit the community, and was determined to create a complete local business where he could help retirees save money on their taxes and better manage their portfolios, so that they could focus on enjoying their retirement years – and The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group was established in 2006. In 2009, Lorrie joined Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group as Director of Marketing. Lorrie Rizzotto already had an impressive career in the marketing industry. Specializing in corporate incentive and meeting planning, she worked at Allstate’s Regional Florida office for 11 years, and then became an Independent Corporate Meeting Planner with HelmsBriscoe, where she achieved “President’s Club” status in the Top 50 in the country. Currently, she handles all marketing, networking, event planning, and the firm’s yearend client appreciation gala. She and Ed and have been married for 23 years and have two daughters who attend Mitchell High School.

care, wills, trusts, annuities and life insurance. Clients have access to experts in the fields of taxes, finance, insurance, and the services of elder law attorneys who can handle wills, trusts, and overall estate planning. Ed says, “Clients like the opportunity we provide to get everything taken care of in one place.” “When people come in to see us,” says Ed, “the first thing we do is dedicate an hour or two of our time to complete an overall review that covers the last couple of years, including going over their tax returns in detail, studying their portfolios, and discussing their important concerns to determine how we can help them. Then, at a follow-up appointment, we present a thorough plan for them.” The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group provides conservative yet effective advice when it comes to financial planning and investments. “Many people are concerned with the economy right now and preservation of funds is very important,” says Ed. “Saving on taxes, reducing taxation on social security and protecting the financial wellbeing of a spouse after another’s death – those are things that my clients are concerned about. Today, people also want alternatives to CDs and money

market accounts. They are looking for something tangible and more clients are investing in precious metals with us and other conservative investment vehicles of which they may have been previously unaware. “ Rizzotto explains that being involved with his clients in all the key areas of tax returns, insurance needs and investments helps protecting their bottom line. “We’ve had people who have had other advisors and financial planners who convinced them to make changes, not aware of the tax impacts,” says Ed. “If there is an investment or change that could cause a taxable event – we know that upfront.” Client Testimonials Palm Harbor residents Olly and Vicky G. write, “We have just received the results for the first two years that we have had since taking your recommendations for an investment program to suit our financial and income needs. We want you to know that we are most appreciative of your assistance to us, particularly since we have increased our net worth each year while drawing the planned monthly income from our account, even with the sliding poor US economy. You have thoroughly dis-

cussed, in detail, our financial position and desires for our retirement years. You have answered our phone calls promptly and you have fully answered all of our questions. Frankly, we have never received such fine assistance and results from any of the numerous consultants that we have had over the past many years.” Russ and Vicki, a couple from Palm Harbor who retired in 1996, at first went with a big-name company. Unsatisfied, they started looking for someone who would be readily available to them. “Vicki and I got an appointment with Ed, and he helped us get things changed over on a Friday afternoon as the market was going down fast. We got everything changed over before the big drop in December of 2007. As the months went by, we were very happy and we felt very lucky that we contacted Ed and his Group. We lost about one-third of our retirement before we went with Ed, but we would have lost two-thirds of it if we hadn’t switched. We now have yearly meetings to look at where we are and where we want to go. We would recommend Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group to anyone dissatisfied with their current investment firm.” Ed and Barbara J. of Trinity are

happy they chose Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group. “We have been very happy with Ed’s handling of our portfolio. Before Ed handled our investments, we were involved in a losing mutual fund, which Ed suggested we sell immediately and reinvest in a Fund suggested by him. This new fund pulled us out of a hole, and we give credit to ED RIZZOTTO. Ed is always ready to help. He has come to our home anytime we ask him, to explain some of our questions. We have our income tax done by his firm and never have had a problem. All in all, our transactions with Ed and his staff, have been nothing but exceptional. We do recommend Ed Rizzotto most highly.” Ed and Lorrie Rizzotto, and the entire team at The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group, are very committed to achieving their clients’ needs and goals while providing the complete services they need for a more secure retirement future. The Rizzotto Tax Advisory Group is located at 3030 Starkey Blvd, Suite 150 in Trinity, and in Largo at 1034 Belcher Rd. South. “Universal FWS” Continued from page 1 That’s because Universal Fine Wine & Spirits is dedicated to keeping the selection fresh and up-to-date, offering a wide selection of the usual suspects, as well as an array of whiskeys, vodkas, cordials and more. Universal Brews Up a Big Selection Janevski may own and run one of the most popular liquor stores in the bay area, but he’s a beer guy. Janevski says, “I like the craft beers, and we happen to carry a lot of them.” In addition to carrying the big name brands in beer, Universal is known for carrying a variety of IPA beers and craft beers, which really sets Universal Fine Wine & Spirits apart. “We have a lot of Cigar City craft beer, as well as a lot of other out-ofstate, small brewery beers here,” Janevski says. “People find out we carry

their hometown beer and we get a lot of customers that way. They always say, ‘I can’t believe you carry this!’ ” Craft beers are a great way to have your beer while trying something a little different. There are craft beers in every flavor at Universal, from Cigar City Cucumber Saison Pale Ale to Southern Tier Choklat Stout Dark Ale. From pomegranate to Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale, there’s literally a brew for everyone. Having a taste for uniquely crafted beer himself, Janevski knows that sometimes you don’t want to buy a whole lot of a craft beer until you know you like it, so Universal offers a mix-and-match craft beer special. Customers love coming in and creating a custom six-pack of all the different flavors and styles, so whether you’re looking for a pack of Bud or want to find out what a Victory Golden Monkey Belgian tastes like, Universal’s your place. Janevski says, “We give our customers a 5% discount on every sixpack of mix and match craft beer.”

Wine–A Universal Language If wine is more your speed, Universal has quite an impressive selection. From vintage to sparkling, red, white and rose; wine is the language spoken at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits. Wine is available and in stock from every corner of the globe, from vineyards in California to Australia and everywhere in between. There are hundreds of wines to suit any taste and budget on the shelf and customers love knowing that their prices are consistent. Universal Fine Wine & Spirits now has a thriving Internet business as well, so customers can order items straight to their homes. Janevski says, “You can order just one bottle or everything we have.” Beer and

wine can be sent out of state, while liquor needs to be in state. Janevski explains, “Every state has their own rules about liquor and whether or not they can be shipped in or out of state lines.” If you are always on the hunt for a particular brew or bottle of wine, Universal is known for taking special orders. Janevski adds, “We get special orders all the time. We tell our regular customers that if they want something consistently, we’ll order it in for

them and put it on the shelf.” It’s this kind of customer service that has had people talking the place up over the last ten years. The regulars are all in stock and waiting, and Universal is proud of the fact that they don’t raise prices just to knock them down. “We keep our prices consistent,” Janevski says. Spirits to Lift Your Spirits Liquors are ever-expanding and it’s not just whiskey, rum and vodka any longer. There are spirits in every flavor from blueberry to maple, and birthday cake to cherry pie. With the many high quality products at Universal, the combinations are endless. With the friendly, knowledgeable staff at Universal Fine Wine & Liquors, you can find exactly the right drink for your next big night. One customer was recently quoted as saying, “The people that work there are so nice. When we were having a luau, they helped us with drink recipes and selecting the right rums. If you can t find what you are looking for, they will try and get it for you. My husband and I don t go anywhere else for wine and liquor. They also have a great beer selection.”

Another great detail that sets Universal Fine Wine & Spirits apart is the fact that they have their own lounge! Orbit 19 is an incredibly eclectic bar and lounge that draws people from all over Tampa Bay, but that’s another article entirely! Universal Fine Wine & Spirits is located at 1542 US Hwy 19 N. in Holiday. They are open Monday – Saturday, 8 AM–2 AM, and from 11 AM–2 AM on Sunday –– 365 days a year. “Dean Parks” Continued from page 3 personality. In 2008, Dean and Amanda were blessed with sweet baby Fisher Dean, a handsome, blue-eyed doll. Dean always wanted to raise a family in Crystal Beach and many would say that he was “living his dream.” Amanda says, “Dean loved his kids more than life itself and he spent so much time teaching them how to fish, ride their bikes, skateboard and of course…dance like James Brown! He was the proudest father in Palm Harbor and if you questioned that, he would have set you straight.” Dean was truly a man who loved his community. There was never a time when I saw Dean that he didn’t have a smile on his face. His joy for life was infectious. “In the past few years, Dean has worked closely with the Palm Harbor Recreation Center to build a large attendance for summer fish camps. He wanted to give kids who maybe otherwise would have never had the opportunity, to get out on the water, experience all that Florida's waters have to offer and catch some fish,” says Amanda. “Whether he was teaching the kids

46

how to throw a cast net or how to tie a knot, he enjoyed every minute of it. Dean always said that those were memories they will have for a lifetime. I hope the kids had as much fun as he did!” Dean loved life and his passion for his community, family and honoring his Florida native roots really made him a one-of-a-kind guy. On January 10th Dean suffered a massive heart attack while at home with his family and passed away. Amanda is raising Marley and Fisher to honor the life Dean always wanted them to have; a life full of joy, fun, happiness and love, helping them to grow up as happy as Dean did. “News Briefs” Continued from page 5 School on Feb. 2, TDT took home a Finalist Alliance trophy, the PTC Design Award, and 13th place statewide, earning them a spot at the State Championship. The team, comprised of high school students from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties, pulled itself up steadily from nearly last place at the start of the season to Championship level, working with mentors in programming, design and mechanical engineering, applying lessons learned and working overtime after school, weekends and during school holidays. Team members also spent dozens of hours providing community outreach at science and technology events and meetings. In coming weeks, you'll be able to see Team Duct Tape at the USF Engineering Expo, the Tampa Bay Mini Maker Faire, and coolTech. Now the team is hard at work again, refining their robot design, honing teamwork and interview skills for the judged portion of the FTC Championship, and fundraising. It will cost the team $2500 in travel, lodging and competition expenses to compete in the Championship. To that end, the team is seeking community support for their

journey and is reaching out to area businesses for sponsorship. Team members are happy to visit organizations, schools and businesses to share their academic and technical learning experiences and demonstrate their robot to those interested in learning more about their work. Your tax-deductible donation to Team Duct Tape through parent sponsor Learning is for Everyone will help the team in their continued journey to success. To contribute, please visit www.TeamDuctTape.com and donate through Network for Good or PayPal. Donations can also be made by check, payable to Learning is for Everyone with “Team Duct Tape” in the memo section, and sent to 5910 Hammock Woods Drive, Odessa, FL 33556.
