Team 79 KRUNCH Robotics Club is Ready to “Assist” FIRST® Team 79 KRUNCH unveiled this season’s competitive robot, “KRUNCH 17” at Media Night on Monday, February 17 in the gymnasium at East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs, FL. Last year, Team 79 Krunch was a two-time Regional Championship winner in the FIRST® ULTMATE ASCENTSM challenge and qualified to compete in the World Championship! This year’s game, AERIAL ASSISTSM, combines the skills of various competitive sports and is played by two opposing alliances with three teams on each side. The challenge is to pass large exercise balls to other alliance teams, shoot the ball over a truss and into various goals to score points. Bonus points are rewarded for displaying teamwork and assisting other teams to achieve the game’s objective. In order to be eligible to participate in the competitions, robots must meet stringent requirements including height, weight, materials, and other variables set forth by FIRST®.

4

Members of FIRST® Team 79 KRUNCH include students currently enrolled in the Academy of Engineering at East Lake High School, which was established by Paul “Coach” Wahnish, founder of CTEF (Career Technical Education Foundation, Inc.). FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway. According to their website, “FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.” According to the team’s president, Austin Bayon, “This year’s competition is based on cooperation with the other FIRST® teams. Team 79 is challenged to manipulate a two-foot exercise ball in a variety of ways. Our team must cooperate with our alliance members to gain points through passing the balls from robot to robot, shooting into a

six-foot tall goal and/or catching passes by other robots. We are prepared to adapt to the changing conditions of the game and work with other robots with varying designs.” The most noteworthy aspect is that each team competing in the challenge has only six weeks to design, prototype, builds, tests, debugs, programs and wires the robot. Team 79’s students, teachers, mentors, and volunteers have dedicated hundreds of hours for the past six weeks to meet and complete the robot within this allotted timeframe. Congratulations to these students who are learning how much fun science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (STEM) can be. Home Services, etc. Provides Peace of Mind While You are Away By Katie Thomas If you travel often or live here part-time, then you know the worry of leaving your home unattended for an extended period. Nothing will give you peace of mind like knowing your home is being looked after by Richard Snyder, the owner and operator of Home Services, etc. in Palm Harbor. Richard started Home Services, etc. in 2009 to provide the Tampa Bay area with a new kind of home service, one that caters to winter residents, business travelers and people who go on extended vacations. A 35-year resident of our area, Richard offers weekly, biweekly or monthly visits, and every single visit is documented with digital photographs that are emailed to the homeowner on the same day of the visit – every visit. There is a very important reason for this. Richard explains, “Florida law says that if you leave your house empty for six weeks or longer, that house is considered vacant or abandoned, and in the case of theft or damage, your insurance may not have to pay any claims you have. That is why I provide three ways to prove that a house isn’t aban-

10

doned. There is a reason for those pictures. I am the eyes and ears for the homeowner.” In addition to emailing pictures, Richard emails a well-documented account and will call if anything needs immediate attention. Clients always know in advance when Richard will be in their home for routine checks because he sets a date and keeps it. When clients sign on with Home Services, etc. they can expect excellence. Richard performs maintenance checks and tasks such as bringing in the mail, flyers and door hangers. Richard will even forward any important mail to you. He receives deliveries and lets in the cleaning service, pool maintenance service or other workers. He always performs a thorough walkthrough, checking and even “feeling” the house. “I touch things and make sure they work,” says Richard. “From the air conditioner to the water heater, I really try to get a feel for the home and make certain everything is in proper working order.” Richard checks walls and ceilings to make certain there are no leaks after storms and even takes his shoes off to make sure the ground is not wet anywhere within the home.

Richard brings the personal touch to home sitting and he takes every measure possible to provide preventive maintenance at your house, from leaks, to a crack in the pool’s siding or unwanted pests. Home Services, etc. even goes the extra step in looking out for things that you may have never thought of! Some of the small disasters that Richard has encountered and handled: a frozen-up air handler, an empty spa that should have had water flowing, a pool pump leak – and that is just a few. Richard knows firsthand the challenges that being away from home presents and actually came up with the idea of home-sitting more than 25 years ago, when he was leaving his home unattended while away on business. “I was traveling a lot for my job back then and recognized a need for something like this. I thought someone should be watching my home and I was sure that other people were in need of the same service. I was able to identify with people away on business, winter residents, baseball players and people who are in nursing homes that own a home but have family out of state whom aren’t able to watch it.

When a home security system alerted police, Home Services, Inc. was there to stand in for the homeowner. There was a market for home-sitting, this I knew, I just needed to find the right time to dedicate myself to my project.” His clients are happy that in 2009, the time was finally right!

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

Home Services, etc. alerts homeowners to maintenance problems, such as the empty spa and leaking pool pump above, and will even meet the repairman. Dedicated to Providing Peace of Mind “I build real relationships with my clients,” says Richard. “My retention rate is 100% and many of the people I work with become friends. The important thing is that my clients have a real trust with me. I am very passionate about Home Services, etc. and my clients appreciate the peace of mind they receive when I take care of their place while they are away. I love our community here in the Tampa Bay area and I do my best to offer the best to my clients and local residents. I treat their homes the way I would want mine treated.” When you have a consultation

with Richard, he brings his book of references, referrals, presents his own background check and will provide you with examples of the wonderful services he performs. Jamie and Susan Swenson say, “As snowbirds, this provider visits our home. He checks out the inside for proper cooling (he had once found out that the AC failed and then came again to be at the home when the AC technician arrived), that there are no water issues, bug issues, and that everything appears in order. He also checks the exterior of the home picking up materials (newspapers, ads, etc.) that people have left at

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

the front door making the house look unoccupied. He has actually made runs by the home, without our prompting, after severe storms to check for downed trees and branches. Upon his visits, he takes pictures, and attaches them to a

very thorough report. We have used him for several years, he is reliable, goes out of the way, is trusting, and very organized and thorough.” If you are going away and would like to make sure the home front is secure, call Richard Snyder at Home Services, etc. and he will set up a customized plan with you for your home. He goes above-and-beyond and will even pick you up from the airport if you need a ride and will stock your refrigerator with groceries. “Every client is different, just like every home is different,” says Richard. “I make sure to adhere to any specifications made by my clients and we are all happy the whole way around.” Home Services, etc. is licensed, bonded and insured. Call Richard Snyder at Home Services etc. at (727) 420-6600. Find a full list of services, customer testimonials, and a video message from Richard at www.homeservicesetc.net.

GOT CAT? We Speak Meow at The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor nearly the amount or type of care that they should from most veterinarians or owners. Why not?

By Robert Marrazzo, DVM Most cat owners deeply love their cats and are fascinated by them. Many of us have more pictures of our cats on our phone than we do of our human family. In fact, cats are the most popular pet in the United States. Unfortunately, in spite of this cats are often treated like ‘second class’ citizens by veterinarians. They do not receive

14

Not All Veterinarians are Cat People It may surprise you to know that your cat’s veterinarian may not be comfortable around cats, nor especially knowledgeable about them or their special needs. Veterinary students are taught much more information about dogs than cats in veterinary school. After graduation, the majority of the continuing education available to veterinarians continues to be about dogs. Tellingly, a recent study conducted by Bayer found that only 17% of veterinarians preferred cats, and a majority found cats more difficult to work with and to diagnose than dogs. The study

also found that 20% of veterinarians had not examined their own cat within the last year. Is it any wonder then that cats make up only roughly 20 – 25% of the patients in a typical veterinary hospital? We Are Cat People That’s not the case at The Cat Hospital at Palm Harbor. Cats are #1 here, and they make up 100% of our patients. We understand their special medical and home care needs, and the needs and concerns of their people. We are also keenly aware that the relationship that you have with your cat or cats is very important to you. The Cat Hospital was established in 1996, for the following reasons: • To meet my selfish desire to surround myself with cats, cats, and more cats all day long. I love cats, and have put together a team that feels the same. • By focusing on cats, we are able

to dedicate our studies and efforts to learn more about them, and improve our ability to care for them. • Our recognition that cats and their people were often not receiving the care they needed or deserved. • To provide a quiet place for cats and their people to come to without the additional stresses and loud noises that exist in other veterinary hospitals. The Cat Hospital is different because of our complete dedication and devotion to focusing our attention on cats. We listen to you and your cat, because we believe that the most impor-

Mulligans Irish Pub & The Crescent Oaks Exchange Open to the Public! By Julie Kanehl Did you know that there are two upscale, affordable and family-friendly restaurants located within the gated communities of Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Golf Club? It’s true, and these restaurants are open to the public! Mulligans Irish Pub is located at 2990 Wentworth Way, just off of East Lake Road in Tarpon Springs within the gated Wentworth Golf Club community, and just a mile or so away, at the Crescent Oaks Golf Club clubhouse at 3300 Crescent Oaks Boulevard, you’ll find The Crescent Oaks Exchange which offers a traditional breakfast and American fare for lunch and for dinner on select evenings. Wentworth Country Club and Crescent Oaks Golf Club are sister clubs that operate under the Ace Golf company flag. Owned by husband and wife team, Bill Place and Sue Lee, both of these semi-private clubs offer affordable golf and social memberships, but are open to the public, and this of course, includes their restaurants. Bill says, “A lot of people don’t

come to our restaurants because they think they can’t get past the gates!” He adds, “We often hear from people who say, ‘we didn’t know you were here! This is really nice!’” Mulligans Irish Pub Offers the Best of Both Worlds Mulligans Irish Pub is located at the clubhouse of the Wentworth Golf Club, and has successfully captured the old-world feel that any successful Irish pub worth its salt would strive for. The perfect place to come and watch the game (or more than one as they have 11 flat screen TVs), meet with friends, or to come for a bit of Irish whiskey, Mulligans Irish Pub is both Irish pub and a family friendly sports grill. Chef Jeff Northrop, who is Cordon Bleu trained, offers some of the most delicious Irish recipes in town, from shepherd’s pie to fish and chips, to more traditional American fare like burgers and sandwiches; there’s really something for everyone at Mulligans. Starting with breakfast sandwiches in the morning and moving to a full menu for lunch and dinner, Mulligans has delicious choices from starters to salads and gour-

met burgers. There’s even a “Little Leprechauns” menu that affordably offers kids their go-to favorites. Offering seating inside, on their 1,000sq.-ft. verandah or in a private dining room, Mulligans is a great place for families to come. LOKEY Infiniti Grand Re-Opening Event Filled With Highlights! By Kim Thomas Attendees celebrated in splendid style at the Grand Re-Opening of LOKEY Infiniti, held Thursday, February 20th at the LOKEY Infiniti Building at 19740 US Highway 19 N in Clearwater. The event was held in celebration of LOKEY Infiniti’s extensive, seven-month-long remodeling project that was recently completed. The celebration ensued in earnest as Rich Bekesh from Spring Engineering and Sharon Boraski, Vice President of Lokey Motor Company, cut the ribbon with Debbie Thomas at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony by the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce. Guests attending the LOKEY Infiniti Grand Re-Opening Event enjoyed delicious fare provided by Island Way Grill including cocktails, grouper bites, pulled chicken tostados, shrimp cocktail, and hogfish & beef sliders. Cigar aficionados and those who wanted to try a cigar for the first time were treated well at the premier event. World famous Tampa Sweethearts Cigar Company was a hit, featuring Arturo Fuente, Jr. and his nephew Josh Fabelo; both were at the Event auto-

graphing and handing out complimentary cigars. Tampa’s ManCave Cigar Lounge and Barbershop owner Darren Alvarez and fiancé Catrinna were there and many in the crowd were able to witness their amazing skills at handrolling cigars. CC’s Cupcakes was on-site to make sure LOKEY Infiniti’s Grand Re-Opening was as sweet as it was fun. Owner Carol Sarhaddi made an assortment of her delicious designer cupcakes. Can you imagine anything better than an assortment of heavenly cupcakes including blueberry-lemon, carrot, almond, salted caramel, chocolate-peanut butter and red velvet; each topped with a variety of flavors of Carol’s butter cream and cream cheese frosting, sprinkled with silver sparkled sugar crystals and adorned with a white chocolate Infiniti symbol – pure decadence! The mood was happy thanks in part to DJ Jeff Tarquinto from Grant Hemond & Associates. He kept the party moving with a variety of upbeat and fun dance hits from all eras. DJ Jeff Tarquinto has a sparkling personality and involves the crowd, which is why he has been the DJ for many LOKEY events.

Speaking of great tunes, guests grooved to Mix 100.7 FM Radio. Jeff Liss made it happen! He brought out the Mix 100.7 Party Van to entertain guests as they arrived and walked around the many beautiful display vehicles out in front of LOKEY Infiniti. Jessica kept the party going on the outside welcoming guests as they were having their vehicles valet parked. Most

BOOT CAMP ROCKS! By Kim Thomas Ladies, it is the season to shape up for sundresses and tank tops and it has never been more enjoyable to tone your muscles than at North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women. Treat yourself right and do something that is healthy, productive and FUN! Just ask the women at North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp and they will tell you, John Kent’s invigorating boot camp for women is a fat-blasting, strength-gaining, heart-pounding workout that is created to help us girls keep our curves strong and flexible. John promises that if you dedicate

just one hour a day for 20 days to getting in shape with workouts at North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp, you will experience: 5–12 pounds of weight loss, greatly improved posture, better relaxation, 3–5% reduction in body fat, 1–3 inch decrease in the midsection, 25% improvement in endurance, 25% increase in strength, 100% gain in self-confidence and an abundance of energy! And, he promises it is “all wrapped in fun!” Rather than “drill sergeant” John is more “coach” and uses his bullhorn to shout out encouragement, “Push yourselves a little further than you’re acclimated to. stretches. She said, “He has been awesome at making sure I am okay and working at a level that I can be comfortable at. I chose this camp because John makes it accessible to women at any level. It is a very non-threatening environment. After joining, I thought, ‘I’m really going to like it here.” That isn’t to say John isn’t tough, though. He definitely challenges the group to work hard, and while offering easier modifications for those who need it, he offers harder modifications for those at advanced fitness levels. Meet John Kent – Personal Trainer, Coach, Friend “I want to say to women, ‘Hey

come on, remember your health. You are important too!’ A lot of times women completely neglect themselves, putting their needs at the end of the list after work, kids, family, then before you realize it, health issues pop up. I interface with them from the beginning and help coach them out of that danger zone and it really is a danger zone,” explained John. “Sometimes, women need something that comes in and changes that certain pattern they are in. Coming outside and being close to nature with other women and being effectively coached interrupts that pattern and the small, doable changes I introduce create dramatic results.”

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

John feels that it is very beneficial to work out in a group setting and with partners. The boot camp contains exercises that require campers to partner up and switch up partners. “It breaks down walls and allows us all to have a deeper connection,” said John. “Campers realize they made it through the challenge as a team and it feels really good to be part of that.” John really cares about his campers and has chosen to keep his company small because he loves being a part of the transformations going on in each lady’s life. “I love the interaction between me and my campers. I love our conversations. Through the years, our

group has experienced traumas; the loss of a loved one, divorce…it’s nice to have people around you who can support you through those times and we are that kind of group.” Yep, no matter what life throws at you, at North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women, the music is upbeat, the camaradarie is real, and the vigorous workout helps you get back to the business of living happily, strongly and productively! John is so sure you’ll enjoy the program that he offers a money-back guarantee. Plus, he also offers a 50% discount for first-time campers, so sign up today for the next available camp. The North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp for Women meets in East Lake and accommodates women from Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties. “Cleaning Angels” Continued from page 1 she’d found her true purpose, Donna devoted herself to growing her client base. She saw that by providing a stellar cleaning service, she was instrumental in helping people to enjoy their homes again. At one of her first cleaning jobs, she bonded with an elderly lady under Hospice care and she was the inspiration behind the name of the company. Donna is still emotional as she recalls bonding with her client and giving her a crystal angel. Just before passing, the lady referred to Donna as her cleaning angel. Years later, after falling and breaking her ankle, Donna hired her first employee. Now, bigger and better than ever, with 22 employees and 23 years later, Donna has built the number one cleaning service in Tampa Bay, which offers exceptional service and a superior outcome. The fully licensed, bonded and insured company provides you with a team of “cleaning angels” who are background checked, drugfree and covered by worker’s compensation. They also adhere to all OSHA rules. This is important for Donna’s employees’ protection, as well as her

clients’ protection. “I have one customer who [previous to hiring Donna’s Cleaning Angels] had hired an individual who did not carry workman’s compensation,” explains Donna. “This person was not wearing non-slip shoes and ended up falling while cleaning the shower and hitting her head sustaining a serious injury. She sued the homeowner and won. My clients don’t have to worry about that because I carry the liability.” Donna’s Cleaning Angels work as a team, and they are always presentable and friendly, with matching uniforms and non-slip shoes. They bring everything they need to provide you with an exceptional cleaning. Donna explains, “My teams come in with a large canvas kit with all of their cleaning supplies, all of which are of the highest quality and kept in separate plastic bags. The cleaning teams are trained on what products to use. We never use bag-less vacuums because they are unsanitary. Our vacuums are commercial grade, and include a stair vacuum, an upright vacuum and a canister vacuum. The bags are changed often and they are checked and wiped down before every clean.” Donna continues, “I offer a very unique and personable cleaning serv-

ice. My teams spend twice the time as other services for less money. There is a lot more to providing a good cleaning service than just the cleaning. from seven a.m. until eight or nine at night. I have been doing this for 23 years and I have plenty of references to provide people with, not only from customers but from many businesses in the area who know of me because I support other local businesses and restaurants.” At the end of the day when it’s time to unwind, relax and enjoy a great meal, Donna and her partner Steve frequently dine at local restaurants, including Central Park Restaurant in New Port Richey, where they love to sit and chat with the owner Chris Michael. “We’ve found that we have some of the same customers,” says Donna. “And we agree that we are fortunate to advertise in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and we absolutely love the staff there.” Donna has had many articles in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and says there are many times when people find out the name of her business and say, “Oh I hear good things about your service.” She says, “I have one new client who told me she’d been reading my stories for five years now. She said, ‘I knew that one day when I needed to hire a cleaning service, it would be you.’ Then she gave me a big hug and said that she felt like she’s known me

for a long time.” Another client called Donna after she heard two ladies at a doctor’s office in Palm Harbor talking about what a great job Donna’s Cleaning Angels do. People like knowing Donna’s background and the work ethic she learned from her hard-working Italian and French Canadian family in the small town of Gorham, in the white mountains of New Hampshire where her family has owned an Italian restaurant for over 67 years. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to the business.” Reflecting, Donna says, “At the end of the day I thank God for my blessings – the great people who work for me, a great business, my health, my home, my loved ones and my family. God bless you all.” If you are ready for a heavenly clean, please call Donna’s Cleaning Angels at 813-475-5958 or at 727-942-8289; servicing Pasco, Hillsborough & Pinellas Counties.
