Visit Old McMicky’s Farm A Tampa Bay Tradition for Over 65 Years! Nestled on 20 lakefront acres along with Camp Keystone, Florida’s oldest continuously inhabited camp, Old McMicky’s Farm opened 1991 and quickly became a favorite field trip destination for kids. Camp Keystone has a long history with nature lovers and has employed and hosted prominent people like Burt Reynolds and thousands of kids from all corners of the U.S. every summer since 1946. The camp created many special memories over the years, showing more than 30,000 kids how to unplug and get back to nature. Creating a big family of camp alumni, Camp Keystone and Old McMicky’s Farm encompassed the tra-

ditional summer camp – sleeping in cabins, horseback riding and singing around campfires – and American farm life. Old McMicky’s Farm hosted field trips for about 30,000 Tampa Bay area children every year, with many seeing goats, pigs and sheep for the first time in their lives. Bringing Old McMicky’s Farm to New Generations! Re-opened in 2013, Old McMicky’s Farm is bringing back the beloved tradition of farm life to a new generation – offering a rare opportunity for kids to interact face-to-face with farm animals. This hands-on educational experience shows children to seniors how life was lived on an American farm. Visiting the farm makes a funfilled day with the opportunity to touch, see and have an up close experience with American farm animals – while taking an exciting hayride, running through the barn maze, milking a cow and more! From day one, Old McMicky’s Farm has been about giv-

ing back to the community – hosting farm tours for children and veterans through non-profit organizations. Giving Back to Tampa Bay Old McMicky’s Farm is committed to giving back to the Tampa Bay area. One of our biggest goals is to give children facing challenges and wounded veterans who served our country an awesome day of fun, memories and relaxation at our farm – absolutely free. 1000 KIDS Program Seeing the look of joy on children facing challenges is truly priceless. Each year, the farm’s 1000 Kids Program has the goal of welcoming 1,000 kids in the Tampa Bay area to forget

Millian-Aire Keeps Tampa Bay Cool 24/7 By Julie Kanehl Summer will be fast upon us and between the sweltering heat and the humidity the season brings, let’s face it, staying cool is of the utmost importance. In fact, air conditioning is one of those things that many people take for granted until something happens to it! Florida without AC makes you wonder how anyone lived here before it existed. Almost instantly there’s a thick heat that moves into each room providing an eerie stillness, and your house quickly becomes uncomfortable. Don’t panic! Call Millian-Aire and they will have you up and running in no time! Millian-Aire is an established, experienced residential and commercial heating and air-conditioning company that has been coming to the rescue of Florida residents since 1989. Their main office has been located just off of Congress in New Port Richey since 1993, and they service all of the surrounding communities 24/7 including Trinity, and from Spring Hill to Clearwater, Tarpon Springs to Tampa, and everywhere in between. Millian-

Aire holds commercial licenses in six states, but their focus is primarily on helping local homeowners like you and me. Known for their entertaining commercials that feature four generations of the Millian family, this familyowned and operated organization is far more than a company with a cool name. President, Owner and Founder Howard Millian grew up in the airconditioning business with his father, Michael, who moved the family to Florida in the late ‘80s to retire. When he realized he wasn’t quite ready to retire, Michael supported Howard when he decided to follow in his footsteps and open an air-conditioning company that people could really trust. That was almost 25 years ago, and today Millian-Aire is one of the most well respected businesses in town. Back then, Howard and his father would carefully install each unit, and his mother Faye ran the office. Now, Howard, his wife Sue Millian, and their family have a staff of more than 30 qualified, experienced and certified technicians who have the same dedication, commitment and respect for the customer.

You can count on Howard Millian’s (middle) family-run business Millian-Aire to provide superior service and to be there fast! Michael still pulls permits and helps his family too! Just like their com-

just three, but he makes everyone smile, and that’s just as important. Millian-Aire also gives back to the Trinity community. In fact, they are a big supporter of the soccer program at J.W. Mitchell High School, largely because of their son Cody, who graduated from there. As part of Cody’s senior project, he wanted to honor his grandfather’s legacy after he passed away from lung cancer. To do so, Sue and Howard helped him to create a foundation called the JK Cancer Fund. Sue says, “He wanted to hold a golf tournament to raise money for people who are recovering from the effects of chemo and radiation to help them get their lives back. At first, we thought it would just be our family, but the word got out and that first year we raised $10,000!” Since then, the annual JK Cancer Fund Golf Tournament, which is held each April at the Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, has continued to raise funds ( it was up to $61,000 as of June 2013) to help local residents who are recovering from Cancer. Sue said, “It was important to me to be able to help the people in our community.” The 4th Annual Drive Away Cancer Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, March 30 at Seven Springs Golf & Country Club.

Call Millian-Aire When You Need Help 24/7 and 365! Millian-Aire focuses on treating their customers like an extension of their own family; that’s why when you call, no matter the hour, or the day of the week, you’ll get a real person on the other end of the phone who will be happy to help you. So, don’t call dad, call Millian-Aire! Howard says, “During the summer months, it can be 100 degrees and we don’t let our people wait. When you call us, our NATE Certified technicians are ready. We make a point to keep our trucks stocked and ready so that we can make fast repairs.” One customer said, “What FAST service! We called two hours ago and we are already enjoying cool air. [They offer] super fast service. The technician was very knowledgeable about air conditioning. His actions were professional and personable. He was friendly and engaged in conversation other than air conditioning. He was kind to our dog also.” Howard says, “We treat people like family. Our technicians have been with us a long time and they treat each house like their own, each pet like their own, and we have a strict policy on wearing booties in the house.” Affordable and competitively

priced, Millian-Aire uses a nationally recognized flat rate for repair charges, which means that their customers don’t have to haggle or worry about what things will cost. They know right up front, and when you need them, an experienced and certified technician will be there within 24 hours to keep you and your family cool. If your technician feels that the unit is too old, or it will be too costly to repair, they might recommend you get a quote from one of their Comfort Specialists who can come to your home and help you find the right air conditioner. These quotes are free, and they do an entire energy survey on your home, measuring each window and taking into account a myriad of details. The best part is that they can be out there in just a couple of hours, especially if you are “down.” If you are in need of a new airconditioner, Millian-Aire is proud to offer six levels of Trane equipment. Howard says, “We have been a Trane dealer for ten years and we prefer them because of the quality of their equipment, but the main reason we stay with them is the customer service that they help us provide the customer after the sale. They don’t forget about their customers, and neither do we.” Robert from Spring Hill said, “Thank you Millian-Aire for resolving my HVAC problems. We love our new Trane unit and the installers were great. Hope this one lasts another 24 years. See you in six months for our service check up. I have already recommended your company to another.” The U.S. Government’s Energy website, www.energy.gov, explains, “When buying an air conditioner, look for a model with a high efficiency. Central air conditioners are rated according to their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). SEER indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a specific cooling output. Many older systems have SEER ratings of 6 or less. The minimum SEER

allowed today is 13. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label for central air conditioners with SEER ratings of 13 or greater, but consider using air conditioning equipment with higher SEER ratings for greater savings.” It can seem a bit overwhelming, but Millian-Aire can keep it simple and affordable. Millian-Aire will help you get the temperature back where it belongs, without you having to spend a million to do it. (Hey, you knew it was coming.) Customer, Miguel, said, “I’m very impressed with the quality of the work performed by the MillianAire Technician; his professionalism, punctuality – which is very important to me – and his politeness. I’m pretty sure I will make the Millian-Aire family my ‘go-to’ company for any and all AC problems.” Be a Millian-Aire Club Member! It’s always better to be proactive instead of reactive right? That’s why Millian-Aire has a customer membership program called the Millian-Aire Club (MAC). The MAC club offers a wide array of benefits, and only costs $19.99 a month. The MAC Club gives its members two inspections per year, same-day service, waves any overtime charges that would normally be accrued on a late-night, weekend or holiday call, and gives you priority service over nonMAC customers. In addition, club members are eligible for discounts on repairs and new equipment, receive a detailed inspection list, and they even receive waxing of the outside unit. As an added perk, MAC members can also log on to the Millian-Aire website to view past invoices, view a quarterly newsletter with energy saving tips and even request service or estimates right online. Millian-Aire serves the entire Tampa Bay Area and can be reached 24/7 at 866-645-2665. For more information, please visit their website at www.millian-aire.com.

Bangkok Sushi is Casual Fine Dining at its Best By Julie Kanehl If you love sushi, Thai food, or sushi and Thai food, or let’s just say food in general, you’re going to love Bangkok Sushi. You’ll find fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, expert preparation, and an absolutely beautiful restaurant that sets the bar high, but manages to keep the price low. With a menu everyone can afford, but the experience and class that its reputation has garnered and earned, Bangkok Sushi is your next lunch or dinner date destination. Whether you’re meeting a colleague for a bite, going out for a romantic dinner or taking the entire family out to eat, Bangkok Sushi will be a hit. Centrally located in the NorthPointe Village, just east of the Suncoast Parkway, Bangkok Sushi is convenient to Odessa, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Land O’Lakes, Trinity and Tampa. Since its opening in 2009, Bangkok Sushi has become a popular local favorite, and it should come as no surprise, for the people who created it did so as a labor of love – taking their heritage, their commitment

18

to creating meals to order without taking shortcuts, their decades of experience from New York City to Miami –opening up their own restaurant right here in our backyard. Offering lunch Monday through Friday, and dinner seven days a week, Bangkok Sushi has an incredible menu that ranges from sushi and seafood to popular dishes like Volcano Chicken, Crispy Duck and the popular Bangkok Steak. Traditional curry, noodle and fried rice entrées also are favorite menu choices at Bangkok Sushi. One customer gushed, “My husband and I have been eating at Bangkok Sushi for years. As self-professed ‘foodies’ we are very particular about the restaurants we frequent. The food and the service have to be consistently on-point to keep us coming back for more. Bangkok Sushi has excellent food - we’ve tried almost everything on the menu and have never had a complaint - and the service is always excellent.” Bangkok Sushi is a breath of fresh air, for when you walk in, the atmosphere is fine dining. Think white linen

The traditional dress and elegant ambiance transports the diner to Thailand table cloths, black napkins folded into crowns on each place setting, and exotic teak wood finishes on the walls. Golden statues, elegant art and excellent service add to the ambiance of the restaurant’s appeal, and this all magically happens without coming off as stuffy or closed off. In fact, you’ll feel quite at home wearing casual clothes to the restaurant, but fresh rose on each table is an example of their attention to detail and their commitment to excellence. So, whether you’re stop-

ping in after school with the kids on a busy evening, or going out for a special date, Bangkok Sushi hits all the marks. Fresh Sushi & Sashimi Expertly Prepared With more than 50 sushi and sashimi options to choose from on their sushi menu, it’s no wonder why Sushi is part of their name. The sushi and sashimi at Bangkok Sushi is carefully and beautifully prepared to order, and while it’s almost too beautiful to

Exquisitely presented and prepared with the freshest, highest quality ingredients, the food at Bangkok Sushi is divine - from the appetizers and traditiona Thai salads to the sushi and sashimi or the unique Chef’s Specials and Thai desserts.. Diners rave that Bangkok Sushi rivals the nation’s best Thai restaurants. eat, you won’t be able to resist. From traditional favorites like California Rolls, Rainbow Rolls and Tempura Rolls to some new and creative dishes like the Sexy Man, the Clearwater Roll, The Monster Roll and the Rock-n-Roll. Whatever way you like your sushi roll, you’ll appreciate that their menu is not only chock full of options, but extremely clear on what’s in each one. This, for those of you who may be new to sushi, is always important. (But be forewarned, in no time you’ll be going for the sashimi that you once scoffed at.) Especially when the fish is as freshly prepared as it is at Bangkok Sushi. Owner John Chieopanich, whose experience spans the globe, said, “We

serve the freshest food possible, and we know how to wrap, keep and store the fish, keeping it clean all the way through the process––that’s a matter of know-how and experience.” He adds, “We take our time to prepare food the proper way, instead of the easy way. We don’t take any shortcuts.” Thai Food: Sweet, Light, Healthy & Delicious The Thai menu at Bangkok Sushi is jam-packed with appetizers, soups, salads, noodles, curry dishes, fried rice dishes and of course Chef’s Specials. Everyone who has been there seems to have a favorite appetizer, although their Curry Puffs, their Spring Rolls, their Egg Rolls and their Thai-style Crab

Rangoon top the list most of the time. Soup options include wonton soup, vegetable, rice, Tom Kha and Tom Yum. There are eight different traditional Thai salads on the menu, although the majority of the items have either duck, seafood, beef, pork or chicken mixed in with the greens, making them excellent choices as meals of their own. One of the very best things about going to an authentic Thai restaurant, like Bangkok Sushi, is your ability to choose what you’d like to eat and the way in which it is prepared, so let’s say you’re in the mood for something sweet and sour, well you have your choice of chicken, pork, beef, vegetable or tofu, and even shrimp, squid or seafood. All of these can be prepared using their sweet and sour recipe, which includes being sautéed in tomatoes, cucumbers, pineapples, white onions and bell peppers and served in sweet and sour tomato sauce. That’s just an example, as most of the Thai entrees offer that kind of flexibility. Bangkok Sushi’s children’s menu includes chicken wings, chicken tempura and fried ice cream for dessert. Chieopanich says, “Thai food is cooked differently than other kinds of food, our technique is different, uses less oil. It’s lighter and not as heavy. That’s why Thai food has become so popular during the last twenty years.”

Bangkok Sushi also offers a nice selection of wines as Chieopanich is a bit of a wine connoisseur himself. There are beer selections from American favorites to Japanese and Thai choices, so next time you come, live a little and have something nice to drink with your meal. Besides the roses on the table and the premier service and experience, Bangkok Sushi also offers a distinctly Thai dessert menu that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re able to save any room, you’ll want to try the Thai Donuts, Fried Banana with Coconut Ice Cream, or Lychee Nuts on Ice. Dan Hoagland said, “One of the top Thai restaurants in the country. A hidden gem! I grew up in NYC and this would be rated as an A+ restaurant.” Bangkok Sushi is a very popular spot for take-out, especially because of its convenient location. Chieopanich says, “We have a lot of people who order before they leave the office, and pick up on their way home!” Bangkok Sushi is located at 16541 Pointe Village Drive, Suite 101 in Lutz. Hours are 11:30 a.m.– 10 p.m. on Mon. – Fri., 4–10 p.m. on Sat. and 4–9 p.m. on Sun. For more information or to order takeout, call 813-920-9777, or you can fax your order to 813-920-9711. “Horse Rescue” Continued from page 3 hands-on board of directors and dedicated volunteers make up the rest of the team. “Everyone has such a passion for the horses and it is obvious how much they love them by the way they for them,” adds Glenda. In recent years, Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue has transitioned to helping more and more off the track Thoroughbred horses, whom if not for Equestrian Inc. would otherwise be destined for uncertain futures. Through Bob Jeffries, head of the HBPA at Tampa Bay Downs, trainers frequently contact Equestrian Inc. to give their former racehorses the opportunity of a second career rather than turning them over to individuals who do not have their best interest at heart. Unfortunately, horse slaughter is a major concern in this area and throughout the United States. Glenda also reaches out to the community and encourages horse owners to call her if they are longer able to provide proper care for their horses, whether it be because of monetary problems, health-related issues, or any other reason. Her organization works with the Sheriff’s Office and tries to

20

help people who can no longer afford to feed their horses. In addition, Equestrian Inc. works in conjunction with other horse rescues in the area, and if they are unable to take your horse they will help you find a place that will. Founded upon Glenda’s love of horses, Equestrian Inc. is 100% volunteer run and operates solely on support from people in the community through monetary donations, volunteering, sponsorship of horses, and donation of services. Equestrian Inc.’s grain and hay expenses exceed $5,000 per month. “As a 501 C3 charitable organization, in order for us to continue our work and succeed at helping horses it is important for people to help out in any way they can,” says Glenda. The organization also provides community service opportunities for high school students. Donations can be made through Paypal on their website at www.EquestrianInc.org, or by checks made payable to Equestrian Inc.

Operated by Dr. Richard Grist, C.EQ.D. and Dr. Jay Clifford DVM, for the past 7 years Advanced Equine Dental has been providing the ultimate equine dentistry experience throughout Florida and Georgia. “It is because of people like Rich and Jay that we are able to do what we do for horses,” says Glenda. How to Adopt a Horse At Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue they DO NOT sell horses, but instead facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation, retraining and re-homing of those animals in their care. They do have some permanent residents, but their main focus is to adopt out as many animals as possible to loving, forever, informed homes. If you are interested in adopting a horse, they have a wonderful selection of horses to choose from – from young to old, Arabians to Thoroughbreds, companion horses to trail horses; they even have a donkey! Glenda says, “We depend a lot on people in the community to get the word out about where we are and what we do. If someone is interested in adopting a horse, we believe in full disclosure – we will

tell them everything we know about the horse.” Equestrian Inc. is very particular and careful about whom they adopt horses out to and they do a great job of matching horses with a suitable owner based upon their personalities and what they are looking for in a horse. Because of this, Glenda is very proud to announce that they have NEVER had a horse returned by an adopting owner! Glenda is adamant about giving back to her community and does a lot of work with underprivileged children, as well as handicapped children. Throughout the year she also takes a few of her horses and ponies to schools in Tampa Bay and allows the children to groom them. She also spends a lot of time educating youths about these magnificent creatures, and teaches them how to properly care for a horse. Equestrian Inc. is available for field trips. “The future of these animals lies in the hands of children,” says Glenda. “It is very important to educate our youths on how to treat horses properly so they can continue the cycle.”

Dynamite Lessons Equestrian Inc. offers a great lesson program, including private and group lessons. Fun and educational,

each class includes grooming, saddling, horse riding lessons and the care required after riding.

Summer Camp Starting in June, Equestrian Inc. will also have an exciting 4-week summer camp, which will be five days a week from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. This awesome camp will teach all aspects of horse care, including general horse care, education on the anatomy of horses, witnessing visits by the veterinarian and equine dentist, as well as numerous opportunities to ride the horses. All experience levels are welcome; whether you are an advanced rider or new to horse care, these camps prove to be fun for all.

Trail Rides A new concept to Equestrian Inc., this wonderful horse rescue will now be offering trail rides to the public. For Valentines Day my husband and I got to experience these trail rides first-hand and we had a blast. Riding Thoroughbred-racing horses, we took a ride around the property, basking in the beautiful nature. I was so excited – I have ridden horses before, but the fact that I was riding on a retired racehorse, was awesome – where else are you going to get the opportunity to ride on For Valentines Day my husband and I (top) rode horses with my mother (left) and sister (right) and had a really great experience! Taking us for a lovely tour around the property, the staff was really accomodating and nice! this type of horse? My mother and sister accompanied us on the trail ride and they really enjoyed it as well. The staff at Equestrian Inc. was really informative and Anthio gave us all lessons and tips before we got on the horse to make us feel comfortable and relaxed while riding. FC Tampa Rangers Soccer Club – It’s a Total Kick! By Marcy Sanford Since 2011, the FC Tampa Rangers Soccer Club has been steadily growing under the direction of Club Manager Mike Connell. Mike, who is a former soccer player for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, wanted to make sure that children grew up enjoying the game and learning how to work together as a team. “We have created a vibrant, local community club for children 5 to 18 years old. We have a recreation league for children who want to just play for fun and competitive teams that have become some of the top teams in Florida in just 3 years. Overall, we want this club to be for the kids. We have created a positive environment where our players love coming to the fields to see their friends, practice, and learn the fundamentals of soccer. We teach them to respect the game and each other. We want to challenge our participants to be better players and people.” Since its opening, the FC Tampa Rangers Soccer Club has grown to 29 different teams with more than 390

players. Mike sees the club having a positive effect not just on the children who play but also on their community as a whole. “My son Zach, has been with the club since it’s beginning in Lutz,” says Michael Board. “At 8 years old, it was his first exposure to soccer, after having played football and baseball at younger ages. It has been important to me that he learns the game the right way and develops his skills under the guidance of a knowledgeable coach. In addition to building a first class program, Mike Connell places passion for the game, development, honor, and respect as the key values for all players in the club. Under Coach Connell’s watchful eye, Zach’s skills have flourished and his team has enjoyed much success on the pitch. As a family, we are enjoying the experience with a fantastic group of young men and their families building friendships that extend beyond the soccer pitch.” Carlos Flores has also been impressed by the skills his son has learned not just for playing soccer but also for life. “My son Ian Flores plays for the

After playing competitive soccer for the last 5 years in another team, we decided to play for the Rangers this year mainly because of the structure Mike Connell has established in this club. There is a sense of pride and discipline mixed with a fun environment. My kid is learning from experienced coaches how to improve his soccer skills, but better yet, he is becoming an all around good citizen. what can I say?” asks Alison Thornton. “We were at another club and were asked to come look at the program by a friend/coach. We went to one practice to watch and they had us at hello! Ultimately it was my daughter’s decision she told me ‘I want to move to the Rangers mommy, I want to become a better player.’ This year she has learned better ball skills. We are so pleased with not only her progress but our son’s too. They both are extremely happy at the Rangers. We are here for the long haul.” Mike looks forward to the FC Tampa Rangers continued growth and presence in the community. While the spring season has ended, there are several ways to get your child involved with this great club. This April and May, the FC Tampa Rangers will be hosting 3 vs. 3 leagues. Tryouts for the 2014-2015 competitive teams are May 27th. They will also host soccer camps throughout the summer. The FC Tampa Rangers’ home field is located at 19045 Crooked Lane in Lutz.
