Local SPCA On The Verge of Closing Its Adoption Center Please Help FILL THE TRUCK on Saturday, March 29th! Shelter officials at the SPCA Suncoast in New Port Richey indicate that the shelter finds itself in a financial crisis and on the verge of closing its adoption center. Unless donations pour in immediately to help care for the animals there, the facility will be forced to close in just a few weeks. Several situations have come together to create a drain on the budget that hasn't been seen since the shelter first opened its' doors 50 years ago. The slumping economy, significant increases in insurance, veterinary costs, utilities, fuel, and basic maintenance of the buildings have all taken a toll. SPCA Suncoast in New Port Richey has cut or eliminated expenses everywhere possible without compromising the animals’ care and reserve funds have been tapped into, and there is simply no more. Make no mistake, if this shelter closes, the effects will be devastating. The SPCA Suncoast helps the community in so many ways. Above all of the services they provide perhaps

none will be more impacting on the local community than the SPCA Suncoast’s adoption program. Roughly 85% of the shelters current adoptable animals are transferred from local animal services’ euthanasia list. Without the SPCA Suncoast’s adoption program those animals will face time limits that most will not survive. Plus, pets that cannot be safely taken into the SPCA Suncoast also face being dumped along the side the road and abandoned. You Can Help! Everything helps. $5, $25––anything you can give! Also, Saturday, March 29th from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. the SPCA Suncoast is hosting a Fill the Truck fundraiser at the adoption center located at 7734 Congress Street in New Port Richey. Items needed: pet food, cat litter, cleaning supplies and, of course, desperately needed monetary donations. It is only with the community’s help that the shelter can remain open and continue their mission. If you can, please

help. All contributions are tax-deductible. Contact information: Mail or drop off donations to The SPCA Suncoast, 7734 Congress St, New Port Richey, FL 34653 For those wishing to donate items and supplies, please contact the shelter at 727-849-1048 to discuss their needs and drop-off times. Phoning after noon is best. The SPCA Suncoast: The SPCA Suncoast has been protecting and caring for our community’s animals in need since 1964. As a nonprofit organization the SPCA Suncoast relies solely on the generous donations and support of the community so that they may continue to provide compassionate care to animals on a daily basis. Furthermore; they are committed to caring for adoptable pets until they find a loving, permanent home. For more information, please visit www.spcasuncoast.org.

Trinity Boys Use 8th Birthday to Help Others

Jackson Davis and Christopher Johnson, 8-year old 3rd graders from Trinity Oaks Elementary School in New Port Richey, donated $646 to The Pampered Chef’s Round Up from the Heart Campaign. The boys asked their friends and family to donate money, instead of giving them gifts, for their 8th birthday party. This campaign raises money for Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief charity. The boys were surprised to learn that 1:6 Americans are Food Insecure, meaning they don’t know where their next meal will come from. Of

Why a Life Coach? For many of us, our goals and our dreams are not only shaped by our own beliefs, confidence and ability to proceed to meet them, but by the many opinions of those around us. Whether good or bad, our friends, spouses, parents and sometimes even our kids weigh in on every aspect of our lives from finances to weight loss and everything in between. Ever have a great idea that gets shot down by everyone at the kitchen table? Ever thought of opening a business but decided to put it off because you didn’t have the know-how? A Professional Life Coach is someone who can objectively help you to meet goals, help you find information, collect research, and ultimately coach and guide you as you rise to meet the many challenges that the journey may entail. What a Life Coach can do is give you short-term achievable goals, much like stepping stones, and then guide you over and around the obstacles in your path. Why it Works! The thing about a Professional life Coach is that they’ve heard every

excuse in the book. You’re tired, you’re busy, the kids have soccer, and you have work. Yep. They do that too. So, they have the resources and the patience to help you rise above each excuse so that you can be the best possible version of you. Maybe you’re not sure what your personal goals are. Well guess what? That’s one of their specialties at Smart Bird Consulting! They can help you to identify what your goals are to begin with. New clients can choose from one of their already successful programs or create their own. One client said, “I love all the advice I can receive at a fraction of the cost… Very reasonable rates.” Popular programs include their Entrepreneur Program, their Family and Relationship Help Program, their Health and Fitness Program and their Mommy Help Program, which helps moms who are trying to figure out how to juggle working from home, parenting, organizing and running at a million miles per hour. Who can relate? I can! Chiara says, “I don’t sugarcoat or judge; I am not a therapist. I give you a real plan of action with life adjustment materials. Our Life Coaches and I will focus on getting you out of your comfort zone and motivating you into getting measurable results.” That’s right, they focus on the here, the now and the future instead of the past, because as they say, the past is over, the future is up to you and the present is a gift.

Each client that comes to Smart Bird Consulting is treated with respect, and each package is completely personalized around each person’s individual needs. What one person may need from their Life Coach will be completely different from the next! You can even sign up to be Full Programs client, which incorporates all of the programs together to fit your individual needs. This is a great program for those who might feel overwhelmed or lost as to how to proceed, or even where to start. Sometimes what seems like an ending is a beginning of something new and better. Your dreams are waiting to be realized. It all starts with a free consultation and meeting the team at Smart Bird Consulting. From business advice to personal advice, Chiara’s team is ready. You know that dream you’ve been burying in the “I’m too busy” file? Get it out, dust it off, call Chiara and her team at Smart Bird Consulting, and change your life for the better! Suncoast MMA / Gulf Coast FCS Kali By Katie Thomas Students find inspiration and learn to immerse themselves in an old age art form at Suncoast MMA/Gulf Coast FCS Kali, where they can train in ancient martial arts for success in everyday situations. Located on Old County Road 54 in Trinity, Suncoast MMA/Gulf Coast FCS Kali offers a diverse number of classes for youths and adults that teach discipline, knowledge, technique, power, concentration, stress-relief and self-defense through mixed martial arts training and Filipino Martial Arts with two very experienced instructors. Ray Norton and Chris Scura have been friends and training partners for years. The two have a passion and great respect for mixed martial arts, which is why they chose to begin teaching in the Trinity community. Ray and Chris have a goal for the school to become a hub for learning and sharing multiple styles of martial arts, where trainers and students alike can meet to expand their knowledge.

14

Chris Scura began his journey with martial arts over 37 years ago at age 10, when a karate school opened up on his block. Originally from New York, Chris trained and instructed classes for 15 years before moving to the Tampa Bay Area. Chris was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2000 and has studied all over the world with Shihan Hansen, Joyce Gracie, Gokor Chivichyan, Grand Master Presas, Benny the Jet Urquidez and Master Gene Labelle. His background and unique experience has been an inspiration to local students at Suncoast MMA for the past five years. “We do a lot of self-confidence and self-esteem building here,” says Chris. “Training in Martial Arts isn’t just fighting like some people think. We focus on passing down an art form of protection that dates back throughout known history. From listening skills to balance and hand-eye coordination, our students are taught a wide range of techniques that can be applied in everyday real world settings.”

as much as they need. We are very lucky to have found this dojo and we hope our kids continue to study for a very long time!” Ray began practicing Martial Arts as a kid and in the 90s he became interested in Chinese Wing Chung Kungfu, which he studied for eight years. Ray then started a family and dedicated most of his focus to his home-life. Then in 2007, he decided to get back into training and he found his favorite of the martial arts, Filipino Combat System, a bladed Filipino Martial Art (FMA). Ray says, “Filipino Combat System or FCS is a weapons-based art that was created in the Philippines for protection. The Philippines were invaded a lot; so early tribes learned long weapon, short

weapon and hand-to-hand combat in order to defend their land and families. The system I teach is in over 96 countries and is used by militaries. The system I practice and teach here at Suncoast MMA was developed by Tuhon Ray Dianaldo in order to combine multiple FMA styles. Tuhon’s style of FMA is created to share many different forms of martial arts and to be politics free.” Ray teaches older teenagers and adults the art of FCS and finds that the mental and physical components in class offer him and others a way to overcome and release stress. Ray is the Indian Rocks Fire Department District Chief and for him, martial arts are a way to combat and ease his stress from work. “Everything simpli-

fies when you are focused on your technique, movements, mental and physical aspects during class,” says Ray. “It is almost like a getaway while you’re here because the only thing you are concentrating on is your skill and the outside world just fades away for a little while.” FCS is a great form of martial arts to learn as a beginner or to add on to existing knowledge. Ray’s student Jay Stratton says, “I have been training FCS Kali and working with Ray for a little over two years now. Ray has shown me many different techniques and concepts for blade fighting through the art of FCS. I was a U.S. Army Paratrooper and Special Operations Medic for over eight years with multiple combat deployments. I have trained with a large variety of people with different concepts and styles. FCS is the first system I have ever seen that takes ancient martial arts of many different styles and combines them to fit modern combat. Ray has shown me concepts that I have never seen before nor have I ever thought of. The system that Ray teaches works well for gaining awareness of your body and surroundings, as well as modern day operational combative tactics. I highly recommend the FCS system to anyone who wants to learn a well-rounded combat system. I can say that from my little time training with Ray and FCS that I have become more diverse and lethal on combat techniques as well as selfdefense.”

Learn an Ancient Art Lose yourself in mastering an ancient practice that not only teaches defense and protection tactics, but also trains your physical body, mind and attitude in a way that can be stress relieving and confidence boosting. Ray and Chris are passionate about sharing and teaching the tradition of mixed martial arts to as many generations as possible. Both men teach for their love of the art. You won’t have to sign contracts or agree to memberships at Suncoast MMA; but you will be required to have a willingness and desire to learn. There are classes for adults to children aged five an up. Whatever your fitness level or experience; Ray and Chris will help you find balance while teaching you the best form of selfdefense available. Mixed Martial Arts classes are offered on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; Junior Beginner is from 5:30 to 6:25 p.m.; Junior Advanced is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Adult class is 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Kickboxing classes are held every Wednesday from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Filipino Combat System (FCS) and Kali classes are taught on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. You can also speak directly to Chris and Ray about other classes that are offered throughout the week during evenings and on Saturdays. To check out a FCS Kali Stick Grappling Seminar featuring Guro (the Filipino word for teacher) Nate Hill, contact Suncoast MMA for information. The event will take place on April 13th. Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue of Tampa Bay – Bringing People Who Love Horses Together With The Horses They Love By Alexis Selbyl Nestled just off Gunn Highway amongst 15 acres of wooded farmland and beautiful green fields lies a secret oasis and safe haven for some of life’s most magnificent creatures – horses. Dedicated to providing a rehabilitative sanctuary for abandoned, abused, unwanted or slaughter-bound horses, Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue, an amazing non-for-profit organization, has been rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing horses for the past 35 years. “Our mission is to bring people who love horses together with the horses we love,” says Glenda Smith the founder of Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue of Tampa Bay. Since starting Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue, Glenda has made it her mission to stand up for neglected and abused horses, giving them a productive second chance at life and the opportunity to experience the true love of a caring family. “I came out of the womb loving horses and started riding at 5 years old,” says Glenda. “I bought my first farm in Land O’ Lakes in 1978 and bought a couple Arabian horses – I love the breed. I later found out about how overly bred their breed was and how so many people were just abandoning them and turning them loose in the state forest. I never bought another horse again; instead I started Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue as a way to save these abandoned horses and provide a loving rehabilitative home. Word quickly got out about how much I loved the breed and that I was willing to help horses in need.” Glenda runs

Equestrian Inc. alongside her daughter, DeeAnn Smith and stable manager Anthio Marcos. Equestrian Inc.’s handson board of directors and dedicated volunteers make up the rest of the team. “Everyone has such a passion for the horses and it is obvious how much they love them by the way they for them,” adds Glenda. In recent years, Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue has transitioned to helping more and more off the track Thoroughbred horses, whom if not for Equestrian Inc. would otherwise be destined for uncertain futures. Through Bob Jeffries, head of the HBPA at Tampa Bay Downs, trainers frequently contact Equestrian Inc. to give their former racehorses the opportunity of a second career rather than turning them over to individuals who do not have their best interest at heart. Unfortunately, horse slaughter is a major concern in this area and throughout the United States. Glenda also reaches out to the community and encourages horse owners to call her if they are longer able to provide proper care for their horses, whether it be because of monetary problems, health-related issues, or any other reason. Her organization works with the Sheriff’s Office and tries to help people who can no longer afford to feed their horses. In addition, Equestrian Inc. works in conjunction with other horse rescues in the area, and if they are unable to take your horse they will help you find a place that will. Founded upon Glenda’s love of horses, Equestrian Inc. is 100% volun-

teer run and operates solely on support from people in the community through monetary donations, volunteering, sponsorship of horses, and donation of services. Equestrian Inc.’s grain and hay expenses exceed $5,000 per month. “As a 501 C3 charitable organization, in order for us to continue our work and succeed at helping horses it is important for people to help out in any way they can,” says Glenda. The organization also provides community service opportunities for high school

students. Donations can be made through Paypal on their website at www.EquestrianInc.org, or by checks made payable to Equestrian Inc.

Advanced Equine Dentistry & Vet Services Inc. Providing full-service mobile dental care for horses, Advanced Equine Dentistry & Vet Services Inc. is an extraordinary company that out of the kindness of their hearts, donates their services to Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue, and on my previous visit I had the opportunity to witness a much-needed tooth extraction on a beautiful horse named “Which Way Do I Go”. Operated by Dr. Richard Grist, C.EQ.D. and Dr. Jay Clifford DVM, for the past 7 years Advanced Equine Dental has been providing the ultimate equine dentistry experience throughout Florida and Georgia. “It is because of people like Rich and Jay that we are able to do what we do for horses,” says Glenda. Advanced Equine Dentistry is 100% mobile and the doctors operate

How to Adopt a Horse At Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue they DO NOT sell horses, but instead facilitate the rescue, rehabilitation, retraining and re-homing of those animals in their care. They do have some permanent residents, but their main focus is to adopt out as many animals as possible to loving, forever, informed homes. If you are interested in adopting a horse, they have a wonderful selection of horses to choose from – from young to old, Arabians to Thoroughbreds, companion horses to trail horses; they even have a donkey! Glenda says, “We depend a lot on people in the community to get the word out about where we are and what we do. If someone is interested in adopting a horse,

we believe in full disclosure – we will tell them everything we know about the horse.” Equestrian Inc. is very particular and careful about whom they adopt horses out to and they do a great job of matching horses with a suitable owner based upon their personalities and what they are looking for in a horse. Because of this, Glenda is very proud to announce that they have NEVER had a horse returned by an adopting owner! Glenda is adamant about giving back to her community and does a lot of work with underprivileged children, as well as handicapped children. Throughout the year she also takes a few of her horses and ponies to schools in Tampa Bay and allows the children to groom them. She also spends a lot of time educating youths about these magnificent creatures, and teaches them how to properly care for a horse. Equestrian Inc. is available for field trips. “The future of these animals lies in the hands of children,” says Glenda. “It is very important to educate our youths on how to treat horses properly so they can continue the cycle.”

Dynamite Lessons Equestrian Inc. offers a great lesson program, including private and group lessons. Fun and educational, each class includes grooming, saddling, horse riding lessons and the care required after riding.

For Valentines Day my husband and I (top) rode horses with my mother (left) and sister (right) and had a really great experience! Taking us for a lovely tour around the property, the staff was really accomodating and nice!

Summer Camp Starting in June, Equestrian Inc. will also have an exciting 4-week summer camp, which will be five days a week from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. This awesome camp will teach all aspects of horse care, including general horse care, education on the anatomy of horses, witnessing visits by the veterinarian and equine dentist, as well as numerous opportunities to ride the horses. All experience levels are welcome; whether you are an advanced rider or new to horse care, these camps prove to be fun for all.

Trail Rides A new concept to Equestrian Inc., this wonderful horse rescue will now be offering trail rides to the public. For Valentines Day my husband and I got to experience these trail rides first-hand and we had a blast. Riding Thoroughbred-racing horses, we took a ride around the property, basking in the beautiful nature. I was so excited – I have ridden horses before, but the fact Trinity Area Neighborhood News

that I was riding on a retired racehorse, was awesome – where else are you going to get the opportunity to ride on this type of horse? My mother and sister accompanied us on the trail ride and they really enjoyed it as well. The staff at Equestrian Inc. was really informative and Anthio gave us all lessons and tips before we got on the horse to make us feel comfortable and relaxed while riding. Overall it was a great experience! The trail rides are a $20 per person donation and reservations are required so contact Equestrian Inc. today to schedule your next ride! Equestrian Inc. Horse Rescue of Tampa Bay is located at 4902 Timberlan St. in Tampa. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.EquestrianInc.org or call (813) 407- 6805. Please make all donation checks payable to Equestrian Inc. Donations can also be made through Paypal on their website. Bangkok Sushi is Casual Fine Dining at its Best By Julie Kanehl If you love sushi, Thai food, or sushi and Thai food, or let’s just say food in general, you’re going to love Bangkok Sushi. You’ll find fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, expert preparation, and an absolutely beautiful restaurant that sets the bar high, but manages to keep the price low. With a menu everyone can afford, but the experience and class that its reputation has garnered and earned, Bangkok Sushi is your next lunch or dinner date destination. Whether you’re meeting a colleague for a bite, going out for a romantic dinner or taking the entire family out to eat, Bangkok Sushi will be a hit. Centrally located in the NorthPointe Village, just east of the Suncoast Parkway, Bangkok Sushi is convenient to Odessa, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Land O’Lakes, Trinity and Tampa. Since its opening in 2009, Bangkok Sushi has become a popular local favorite, and it should come as no surprise, for the people who created it did so as a labor of love – taking their heritage, their commitment

to creating meals to order without taking shortcuts, their decades of experience from New York City to Miami –opening up their own restaurant right here in our backyard. Offering lunch Monday through Friday, and dinner seven days a week, Bangkok Sushi has an incredible menu that ranges from sushi and seafood to popular dishes like Volcano Chicken, Crispy Duck and the popular Bangkok Steak. Traditional curry, noodle and fried rice entrées also are favorite menu choices at Bangkok Sushi. One customer gushed, “My husband and I have been eating at Bangkok Sushi for years. As self-professed ‘foodies’ we are very particular about the restaurants we frequent. The food and the service have to be consistently on-point to keep us coming back for more. Bangkok Sushi has excellent food - we’ve tried almost everything on the menu and have never had a complaint - and the service is always excellent.” Bangkok Sushi is a breath of fresh air, for when you walk in, the atmosphere is fine dining. Think white linen

The traditional dress and elegant ambiance transports the diner to Thailand table cloths, black napkins folded into crowns on each place setting, and exotic teak wood finishes on the walls. Golden statues, elegant art and excellent service add to the ambiance of the restaurant’s appeal, and this all magically happens without coming off as stuffy or closed off. In fact, you’ll feel quite at home wearing casual clothes to the restaurant, but fresh rose on each table is an example of their attention to detail and their commitment to excellence. This, for those of you who may be new to sushi, is always important. (But be forewarned, in no time you’ll be going for the sashimi that you once scoffed at.) serve the freshest food possible, and we know how to wrap, keep and store the fish, keeping it clean all the way through the process––that’s a matter of know-how and experience.” He adds, “We take our time to prepare food the proper way, instead of the easy way. We don’t take any shortcuts.” Thai Food: Sweet, Light, Healthy & Delicious The Thai menu at Bangkok Sushi is jam-packed with appetizers, soups, salads, noodles, curry dishes, fried rice dishes and of course Chef’s Specials. Everyone who has been there seems to have a favorite appetizer, although their Curry Puffs, their Spring Rolls, their Egg Rolls and their Thai-style Crab

Rangoon top the list most of the time. Soup options include wonton soup, vegetable, rice, Tom Kha and Tom Yum. There are eight different traditional Thai salads on the menu, although the majority of the items have either duck, seafood, beef, pork or chicken mixed in with the greens, making them excellent choices as meals of their own. One of the very best things about going to an authentic Thai restaurant, like Bangkok Sushi, is your ability to choose what you’d like to eat and the way in which it is prepared, so let’s say you’re in the mood for something sweet and sour, well you have your choice of chicken, pork, beef, vegetable or tofu, and even shrimp, squid or seafood. All of these can be prepared using their sweet and sour recipe, which includes being sautéed in tomatoes, cucumbers, pineapples, white onions and bell peppers and served in sweet and sour tomato sauce. That’s just an example, as most of the Thai entrees offer that kind of flexibility. Bangkok Sushi’s children’s menu includes chicken wings, chicken tempura and fried ice cream for dessert. Chieopanich says, “Thai food is cooked differently than other kinds of food, our technique is different, uses less oil. It’s lighter and not as heavy. That’s why Thai food has become so popular during the last twenty years.”

Bangkok Sushi also offers a nice selection of wines as Chieopanich is a bit of a wine connoisseur himself. There are beer selections from American favorites to Japanese and Thai choices, so next time you come, live a little and have something nice to drink with your meal. Besides the roses on the table and the premier service and experience, Bangkok Sushi also offers a distinctly Thai dessert menu that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re able to save any room, you’ll want to try the Thai Donuts, Fried Banana with Coconut Ice Cream, or Lychee Nuts on Ice. Dan Hoagland said, “One of the top Thai restaurants in the country. A hidden gem! I grew up in NYC and this would be rated as an A+ restaurant.” Bangkok Sushi is a very popular spot for take-out, especially because of its convenient location. Chieopanich says, “We have a lot of people who order before they leave the office, and pick up on their way home!” Bangkok Sushi is located at 16541 Pointe Village Drive, Suite 101 in Lutz. Hours are 11:30 a.m.– 10 p.m. on Mon. – Fri., 4–10 p.m. on Sat. and 4–9 p.m. on Sun. For more information or to order takeout, call 813-920-9777, or you can fax your order to 813-920-9711. Scubanauts International - “Education through Exploration!” By Katie Thomas Scubanauts International, a locally based non-profit organization for youth development strives to connect middle and high school aged students through collaborative marine research expeditions, exploration, scholastic achievement and wonder. Scubanauts acts as a leadership program and personal development gateway for students interested in marine life and science. Dedicated to enriching the lives of youth with education an exploration, Scubanauts and the youth whom immerse themselves in the program have bright futures ahead! Founded in 2001 by Captain David Olson of Palm Harbor, Scubanauts utilizes informal science education through underwater dive exploration. Captain David wanted to give students a chance to become involved in a program that honed in on diving skills, while building character through research and marine development. Captain Olson’s quest started in teaching recently certified scuba students to use scuba as an outlet for learning more about marine science and has now grown into a fabulously enriching way for parents to connect

30

with their children and work buddyto-buddy in making a difference in our coastal waterways. In the summer of 2001, Scubanauts were introduced to the Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, allowing the team to make their first big impact in our oceans. Scubanauts were able to spend their first summer salvaging and relocating coral colonies, sponges and other bottom dwelling organisms that would be impacted by underwater pipeline construction. Since 2001, Scubanauts have been granted funds to continue their educational experience and tutelage working with Gulfstream Natural Gas Systems. The students plan the dives themselves and work on collecting data parameters, habitat surveys, fish counts and focus on underwater photography and video skills. Scubanauts scuba missions comply with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences to ensure safe dive practice for all Scubanauts. The Scubanauts’ Diving Control Board is comprised of graduate students, volunteers and involved parents that are all diving safety experts in order to ensure safe and properly managed dives.

NASA awarded Scubanauts with a $341,000 federal grant in 2007 to facilitate continued research, promote direct interaction with scientists and establish new chapters. Scubanauts currently has four chapters located in Tarpon Springs, St. Petersburg, Key West and most recently Tampa. Scubanauts International is working to increase opportunities for young divers and avid science lovers by enlisting new members, recruiting the best

a healthy outlet to surround them with positive role models, adults and kids alike.” Jim and his son Colin started Scubanauts in 2008 and have embraced the family oriented program full on. Jim says, “We become a team and also family. Our vacations now aren’t just for luxury, we have a mission to take on challenges, set goals and make an impact on our environment and the lives of our kids.” Recently, Scubanauts has paired with the Wounded Veterans Challenge (http://goo.gl/VFp8ly), in which wounded combat soldiers that are missing limbs work together with Scubanauts to replant coral reefs and improve their lives with therapeutic

outdoor challenges. Scubanauts usually partner with wounded veterans a couple times a year; trips can include anything from diving to hiking in survival challenge situations. The Foisey family from Scubanaut International’s Tarpon Springs chapter are thrilled with the Scubanauts program. As a family, the Foisey’s experience with Scubanauts has been unique, thrilling, educational and a great way to create a lasting bond with memories that last a lifetime. “We absolutely love and thoroughly enjoy the Scubanauts program,” says Cyndi Foisey. “We joined with our three kids in 2011 and our youngest will be joining as soon as she is able. Scubanauts International is

a great character building and networking program for students who have a passion for diving and even instills a love for learning in our kids’ lives. We have gone to Washington D.C. twice with Scubanauts for C.H.O.W. (Capitol Hill Ocean Week), which gave the kids unique opportunities to talk with professors and research scientists, as well as meet with Senators and higher-ups involved with ocean research and marine education. We have gone to the Keys to develop coral reefs and it is amazing to give our kids an experience that they wouldn’t necessarily have in other youth programs. The leadership skills they are building are priceless and we are really im-

pressed with all the teenagers involved in the program. Scubanauts allows students and families to spend their time doing something that they love, while making a positive impact on the marine environment. We love the Scubanauts program and all it has done for us as a family. My husband Paul and I want to enrich the lives of our kids and Scubanaut’s has given us the right outlet that we all enjoy.” The importance in helping your children find positive role models and friends is the key to success during the impressionable middle school and high school years. Scubanauts provides an outlet for kids and parents to have fun, while learning and making a positive long-lasting impact on the marine environment. With guided learning through discovery; Scubanauts is able to provide activities focusing on leadership, community service, social interaction, fitness, environmental science and citizenship. Scubanauts may be just the program for you to provide development building, character shaping and a fun outlet based in a learning environment! New Port Richey homeowner Susan Arnett shares, “I was recently out of town while some work was being done on my house because of a sinkhole. The contractor found problems indicating a leak in my roof. I already knew my roof was on borrowed time. A friend recommended Dale Webb Roofing and placed a call for me. Dale went to my house to assess the situation and give an estimate that very afternoon. I couldn’t even get return phone calls from other roofers for two days. This was during rainy season when the other roofers told me it would be at least three to four weeks before they could get to my house. Dale Webb had the job done the following week. Since I was out of town, all communication was

handled through phone, fax, email and snail mail. Sharon helped me pick the color of the shingles based on what I told her the new color of my house would be. Signatures and permits were all handled professionally and in an incredibly timely manner. Upon my return, I found a beautiful new roof and a dry home. Dale Webb Roofing continues to help me navigate the process of getting a reduction in my insurance rates because the new roof meets the current wind mitigation codes. The team at Dale Webb Roofing made this process so very manageable and almost stress free!” Local homeowner George Sutton was also impressed, “I am very happy with my new metal roof installed by Dale Webb Roofing. It has exceeded my expectations for quality workmanship, comfort and protection, and in keeping my air conditioning from running all day long on these hot Florida days. I used to have a tile roof and then had a shingle roof installed. The metal roof installed by Dale Webb Roofing does the best for keeping my house cool, dry and comfortable. Thank you Dale Webb Roofing for a really good job.” Dale Webb is a great guy with his mindset in the right place for business. He wants to give his community the best work available at fair pricing and build relationships that last a lifetime. His 25 years in the business says something for his company’s longevity, trustworthiness and quality of work. Experience the Difference that Exclusivity and Privacy Offer at Cypress Run Golf Club By Julie Kanehl Have you been searching for a golf and country club that offers an exclusive and private experience, with a razor sharp focus on providing above-andbeyond excellence to its members? Cypress Run Golf Club in Tarpon Springs is a golfer’s dream, offering an awardwinning golf course, a newly remodeled clubhouse and a highly dedicated staff. Cypress Run Golf Club is located at 2669 St. Andrews Boulevard, just a minute north of Keystone Road in Tarpon Springs. Its private gates, impeccably manicured golf course, and clubhouse restaurant and facilities have earned Cypress Run the phrase, “The Pride of Pinellas.” For more than 30 years, Cypress Run Golf Club has been a popular destination for golfers worldwide who seek a member-focused environment where golf isn’t just an activity, but the pride and joy of its very foundation. Today, Cypress Run is better than ever, and many members have even moved into the neighborhood golfing community that has grown up around Cypress Run since it opened in 1981. Tom Tripoli, Majority Owner and President/CEO of Cypress Run these last five years, has an extensive career in building and creating golf clubs all over the East Coast. In fact, he built or remodeled more than 50 clubs during his career before coming to Cypress Run Golf Club in 2009. Since that time, Tripoli has used his experience and his passion for creating an entirely member-focused experience to enhance and improve upon Cypress Run’s already impressive reputation. Tripoli says, “Our mission is ‘Providing the premier golf experience, supported by excellence in social programming,’ and our goal is to not just meet, but ultimately exceed our members’ expectations.” Experience the Playability, Power and Passion of Cypress Run Golf Impeccably maintained by Golf Course Superintendent and Partner Duane VanEtten, a multi-year winner of the West Central Section and West Central Region’s “Superintendent of the Year Award” – Cypress Run’s beautiful grounds have been honored as an

Audubon International Certified Cooperative Sanctuary. A top choice for members and their guests and families, from the back tees the course plays 7,001 yards at a tournament level, and the most forward tees shorten the course to 4,375 yards “without inhibiting the challenge.” Cypress Run’s Golf course actually offers seven sets of tees to facilitate golfers of all ages and abilities. In fact, it was built with that in mind by legendary golf course architect Lawrence Packard, who recently passed away at 101 years of age on Jan. 30. Packard oversaw more than 250 golf projects in his career. Having his pick of places to choose from all over the country, Packard chose to receive his Lifetime Achievement Award at Cypress Run Golf Club in 2012. His popular tagline, “Enjoy the game,” is not surprisingly, par for the course at Cypress Run Golf Club. Member Ron May said, “I’ve lived in Cypress Run for 20 years, and never get tired of playing the course. It’s always a challenge with a lot of character, and always in great shape. If you can play well here, you can play anywhere with confidence.” The golf course that Packard built at Cypress Run is an 18-hole, championship course which has attracted everyone from amateur players to the pros. Whether it’s because of its beauty or because of its reputation for being such an enjoyable course to play, Cypress Run has become a destination for players, couples, tournaments, and is even a US Open Qualifying course. Tripoli says, “We host qualifiers, and have hosted US Open Qualifiers, US Amateur, Senior Open, Regional, Junior and even high school golf. That’s what sets us apart.” He adds, “We are also the home to Palm Harbor University’s Golf Team as we believe it is important to support golf’s future champions.” Ron Salhany said, “I’ve been a member of Cypress Run for 30 years. I choose to be here because of the pristine fairways, greens that roll true and the course challenge that make this one of the best golf experiences in the entire Tampa Bay area.” If you love the idea of the private club, the membership and its many perks, but haven’t mastered the game,

Voted “Best of

2013” for Pinellas County by the Tampa Tribune and St. Petersburg Tribune, Cypress Run calls itself the area’s finest “Private” club community. A bold statement indeed, but the members back it up 100%. Derrick Brooks, former All Pro Linebacker of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said, “Cypress Run is where I like to play, from the excellent course conditions to the outstanding staff, the Club is #1 in my book.” Derrick Brooks isn’t the only famous member of Cypress Run Golf Club. Heismann Trophy Winner and NFL star Vinny Testaverde, PGA Champion and NBC Golf Analyst

Gary Koch, and LPGA Champion Jan Stephenson, are all members and call Cypress Run Golf Club home. Of course, you don’t have to be a star to be a member, although you might feel like one when you dine at their onsite restaurant, Larry’s, and their bartender has your favorite cocktail waiting for you when you arrive. Larry’s, just one of the many amenities at Cypress Run, is a fullservice restaurant that offers a private place for members and their guests to enjoy delicious meals, happy hour drink specials and live entertainment. While the menu is always changing, members know that they can pretty much order whatever they’d like to eat, and that the menus are merely a suggestion. That’s hard to beat! Cypress Run Golf Club has an energetic and experienced staff that’s always focused on providing an exciting golfing and social calendar, which has something for everyone. There are weekly organized golf games (including their incredibly popular “couples golf and quota games”), tennis courts, groups and clubs for everything from playing cards to discussing books, and plenty of live entertainment. Members enjoy access to the lounge and grill; great places to slip away for a romantic evening, to meet with friends or grab a bite to eat. In fact, Tripoli calls the grill and lounge, “the heartbeat of our club.” It’s not uncommon to see people coming up to the grill to chat before or after a game, while enjoying a drink and snacking on some freshly popped popcorn, peanuts, or snacks. Of course, it’s not called “The grill” for nothing! Affordable and delicious, there’s always plenty to eat at the club, from snack foods to full-course meals. Tripoli, who welcomes each and every new member personally, says,

“We truly build pride in belonging here at Cypress Run Golf Club.” Say “I Do” at Cypress Run Cypress Run Golf Club is the perfect place to have a bridal luncheon, a bridal shower, and of course, a wedding reception. Taking a completely personalized approach to each and every wedding, shower, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or special event, the staff at Cypress Run Golf Club takes a special pride in making every event unique and personalized. Recognized in the local and national wedding magazines and websites, Cypress Run’s beautiful grounds, newly renovated main dining area, built-in dance floor and dramatic, second-floor panoramic views, offer couples privacy, exclusivity and class as a baseline to build on as they plan their perfect event. One couple raved about their reception saying, “[You] delivered on each and every item and I am so very thankful. The ceremony site was perfect and the bridal party suite with all of the special touches was such a nice surprise. I heard nothing but compliments on the ambiance, service and of course the food. Thank you again for guiding us and our parents through all of the planning. From what I’ve been told, three of my bridesmaids are now planning their weddings with you.” From making a special event to remember, to enjoying the perks of membership, it’s not hard to see why so many people call Cypress Run Golf Club “home.” Cypress Run Golf Club is located at 2669 St. Andrews Blvd. in Tarpon Springs. early, so she earned a four-year degree in business and real estate from Eckerd College and began her career at Marie Powell Realty in 1973. In 1991 Laurie became the broker/owner of Marie Powell Realty, where she successfully managed the agency and mentored many real estate professionals for 16 years. In 2007, Laurie’s company merged with Prudential Tropical Realty, and at that time she became the Managing Broker for two offices in Pasco County. Broker SFR, CRB, and PMN certified, Laurie has had the honor and privilege to serve as president for three local boards. In 1986, she served as President for the West Pasco Board of Realtors, and in 2001, Laurie served as President of the Greater Clearwater Association of Realtors (which is now part of The Pinellas Realtor Association). Just a few years ago, Laurie served as President of Hernando County Association of Realtors for 2012. She was also awarded the Florida Realtors Humanitarian Award in 2005 and Realtor of the Year in 1987 and then again in 2002. Laurie’s experience and impressive accolades would fill a series of articles and are too many to mention

Alchemy Art Lounge Opens in Historic Tarpon Springs By Amy Paterson Alchemy Art Lounge is the newest creation of “alchemist” Anthony Saroukos. A gallery of local artisans gathered to combine raw woods, steel, and glass to reinvent the bar formerly known as Yia-Mas Martini Lounge. Alchemy Art Lounge is located at the gateway of the Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, at 25 Dodecanese Boulevard, directly across the street from the Riverside Grille House.. Here, across the street from the city Marina, you’ll find lifelong friends - owners Anthony Saroukos and Rich Passanante, and General Manager Amy Paterson. This trio is teeming with creativity and passion for providing an upscale experience for Alchemy Art Lounge patrons. The collaboration of the team, and renovation, which took months to accomplish, has resulted in a lounge atmosphere reminiscent of hotspots in Miami and New York. At first glance, you may notice the crisp yellow building with the bright

blue roof, and the sidewalk lined with sleek outdoor lounge seating and big blue umbrellas, providing the perfect amount of shade. Heaters are provided for chilly evenings, and portable air conditioning replaces the heaters when the weather warms up. Smoking is permitted outside, for those who like to enjoy a cigarette or cigar with their cocktail. Once inside the lounge, you are greeted either by Anthony, Rich, or Amy, who are quick to invite you in and make you comfortable. The bartender on duty will have at least one or two new creations they are working on, so don’t hesitate to ask about the specialty cocktail of the day. Fresh fruit, premium liquor, and only the best ingredients are hand-selected to ensure that every cocktail is tasty and unique. If there’s something you’ve been curious about or have wanted to try, Alchemy is the place to try it out. Every day the team is coming up with new ways to reinvent cocktails, and make them better. Alchemy Art Lounge is a creative space where you can enjoy local art

Anthony’s has made a name for itself in the area with spectacular service, daily specials and of course, fantastic food! The charm and style of Anthony’s transports you to Little Italy and local patrons love the hospitality. Regular diner Harris says, “I eat here three times a week. They go out of their way here to make sure your meal is right and if it isn’t perfect, they will graciously fix it for you the way you like it. I live in Heritage Springs and I have been coming to Anthony’s for the past six years. There are many Italian restaurants in the area I could go to, but I choose Anthony’s because it’s the absolute best. From the food to the service, everything is genuine and authentic. University Of South Florida Initiates Urban Sustainable Food Policy Research Group By Katie Thomas An interdisciplinary team composed of USF faculty, students and an urban planning specialist have joined forces to research and bring to light the effect public policies on urban agriculture have on communities in the local bay area. The group’s intentions, long range plans and potential beneficial outcomes were recently discussed at a presentation on February 21 at USF’s Botanical Gardens in order to give the public an idea of what their research focuses on. The question of how public policies in urban agriculture affect community is being explored through several interdisciplinary fields, including environmental science, public policy, urban planning, religious studies and ethics. In order to research the full spectrum of how policy placement affects communities, the Urban Sustainable Food Policy Research Group (USFPRG) explores policies set in place throughout Hillsborough, Man-

ful exposure, designate specific land use for urban agriculture and join community in the spiritual aspect of participating in local sustainable growth.

MARCH 2014

I became interested in sustainable urban agriculture about six months ago when I began working at an organic produce stand on the weekends. The feeling of being surrounded by fresh vegetables and personally knowing your local grower, where your food comes from and what environmental aspects go into producing your food brings peace of mind. I started looking into building my own garden and realized that there is a lot more to it than throwing seeds into the dirt. I quickly became involved with a volunteer group in St. Petersburg that focuses on sustainable permaculture within the urban city landscape. Meeting with a group of people dedicated to producing delicious vegetables within a community garden has greatly expanded my knowledge on gardening and given me a place to just breathe, work the earth with my hands and collaborate with my community. On my journey to sustainable growth, I have come across many stories of successes and failures that people have

faced within urban agriculture. With a goal to understand as much about the source of my food, policies set in place by local government and how to better bond with my community I always keep my eyes open for groups working to bring Florida and our cities up to speed with urban agriculture advancements. I had a chance to meet with the USFPRG team leaders, which include Dell deChant, Connie Mizak, Will Schanbacher and Tammy Vrana. Each member has a passion for community development, food safety, policy placement and promotion of civic culture. Dell deChant has made significant contributions to foodography within the Bay Area and offers expertise in the religious/spiritual aspect of community food growth. Connie Mizak works within the School of Geosciences at USF and places her focus within USFPRG into how public policy benefits community and environment. Mizak joined the group in order to help herself and students better understand local policies on food production. Will Schanbacher’s background is in Religious Studies and Ethics, his contribution to the group includes research

with a focus on economics, community, race, gender and power issues. Schanbacher looks at socioeconomic impacts that urban food policies have on neighborhoods and community of diverse economic wealth. Tammy Vrana is head of Vrana Consulting, Inc., an urban planning firm. Her knowledge in public land space, building and urban planning assists USFPRG’s mission in finding opportunities for community garden locations. Vrana’s goal is to help reintroduce urban agriculture into our cities and show where they can be located for the best outcome. Each member in USFPRG works with students and local government to explore outlets in which we can bring the Bay Area up to speed with other cities throughout the U.S. The importance of understanding and working together to set new policies within the area is pertinent in identifying the best practices to use, evaluate cultural impacts, develop case studies and build our communities sustainable agriculture society. Each head member of USFPRG has diverse passion for what they are researching. Dell deChant made an interesting point in getting the col-

laboration of church and community to join in on gardening together. I live in a neighborhood with the religious group Friends of Quakers and they have a wonderful garden, in which they share their food and knowledge with our tight knit community. deChant’s interest in involving churches with gardening really sparked an idea in my brain...if churches throughout the area set aside plots for member and community gardening, just think of all the fresh goods we could produce for our cities!

From researching the theology of urban agriculture, to land development, ethics and local government involvement, the Urban Sustainable Food Policy Research Group is dedicating much time, effort and mind power into bringing the Tampa Bay Area up to speed with sustainable cities throughout the country. Contact Dell deChant through email at dechant@usf.edu for more information and future plans of USFPRG.
