Priel Salon - A Thoroughly Memorable Experience! By Pam Sica As you enter Priel Salon, a unique and attractive L'Oréal Professional establishment, you immediately sense the calm and relaxing atmosphere. The music is subdued, the decor is upscale and appealing, and you just know that a revitalizing and sumptuous experience awaits you within. Owners Cynthia and Erik Abrahamson wanted to ensure that their vision for the finest salon experience in the Greater Carrollwood area came to light – and it absolutely dazzles! In order to afford its clients a rejuvenating oasis, the salon was designed with distinct sections for

specialized activities. You are initially greeted at the sleek and modern reception desk up front. The inviting waiting area is set up on the left, while along the right wall, the entire hair care product line is artfully displayed. Peeking beyond, you'll notice the stylists' stations banking both sides of the beautifully appointed salon, with the center area devoted solely to the art of color application. Like me, I believe that you'll find the true oasis to be towards the rear section of the facility within the glass-enclosed Treatment Room. Once inside, you sit back in total comfort, with no distractions, while your hair is deftly shampooed See “Priel Salon” on page 20.

Conquering ALS, One Mountain at a Time! Football player Steve Gleason, who played for The New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008, will always be remembered for his blocked punt on the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a terminal neuro-muscular disease. After his diagnosis, Steve and his friends and family started Team Gleason, in hopes of generating public awareness and raise funding for the research of this terrible disease. Recently, Team Gleason took on another endeavor – completing an epic adventure to Peru. Steve, along with Kevin Swan, Michel Rivers and Scott Fujita, a crew from NFL Films and Team Gleason members, endured a 7-day trek starting in Lima; taking countless buses, 2 trains, 7 planes and hiking 10 miles through the Incan trail. Their journey began in Cusco, where they spent 2 nights getting acclimated to the high elevation and visiting the Cathedral, Qoricancha Temple, the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cusco, Qenko and Puka Pukara. They went on to visit the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and continued their trip through the countryside town of

Urubamba to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. On Day 4, they woke up early to catch the Vistadome train headed toward Machu Picchu, taking in stunning views of the mountains and heading into the high altitude cloud forest. The 21-member group, which included Steve and Kevin in wheelchairs, and 18-month old Rivers, joined a group of porters before crossing a hanging bridge over the Urubamba River. At this time none of them had any idea what they were about to endure. The Incan trail is a combination of landscapes of high altitude mountain ranges (the Andes) and dense subtropical forest. It was extremely challenging to carry the 2 wheelchairs up and down the rocky narrow paths, but the fearless leaders, Scott, Blair and Marc, were not going to let the lack of water and sunlight stop them from getting to their final destination. After 10 hours they finally reached the Sun Gate and got their first view of Machu Picchu. Although the sun had been down for a few hours and the ruins could barely be seen through the moonlight, the group was excited to know it was the final leg and hour or their journey. Traversing downhill and along more steps in the dimly lit site, the group finally made it the Sanctuary Lodge for some much needed food, water and celebra-

Lost in Yonkers – By Neil Simon – Debuts at the Carrollwood Players Theatre July 12 – August 3 In 1942 in the Bronx, Evelyn Kurnitz has just passed away following a lengthy illness. Her husband, Eddie Kurnitz, needs to take a job as a traveling salesman to pay off the medical bills incurred, and decides to ask his

stern and straight talking mother, from whom he is slightly estranged, if his two early-teen sons, Jay and Arty (who their Grandma call by their full given names, Yakob and Arthur), could live with her and their Aunt Bella Kurnitz in Yonkers. She reluctantly agrees after a threat by Bella. Despite their Grandma owning and operating a candy store, Jay and Arty don't like their new living situation as they're afraid of their Grandma, and find it difficult to relate to their crazy Aunt Bella, whose slow mental state is manifested by perpetual excitability and a short attention span, which outwardly comes across as a childlike demeanor. Into their collective lives returns one of Eddie and Bella's other siblings, Louie Kurnitz, a henchman for some gangsters. He is hiding out from Hollywood Harry, who wants what Louie stole, which he is hiding in his small black bag. Jay and Arty's mission becomes how to make money fast so that they can help their father and move back in together. That may entail stealing the $15,000 their Grandma has hidden somewhere. Bella's mission is to find a way to tell the family that she wants to get married to Johnny, her equally slow movie theater usher boyfriend. The two

could also use $5,000 of her mother's money to open their dream restaurant. And Louie's mission is to survive the next couple of days. Community News Briefs New Home of the Brave Anthology Has Bay-area Ties Press 53 is proud to announce the publication of the anthology Home of the Brave: Somewhere in the Sand, edited by Tampa resident Jeffery Hess. This new edition is a follow-up to the award-winning Home of the Brave: Stories in Uniform, which earned a gold medal from the Military Writers Society of America, and featured stories by such notable writers as Kurt Vonnegut, James Salter, Tim O’Brien, and Tobias Wolff.

As editor Jeffery Hess states in his introduction, “Home of the Brave implies the American military. Somewhere in the Sand implies the desert conditions of both Iraq and Afghanistan, but also the mental state that the returning service members occupy periodically or perpetually once they return home.” These stories allow the reader to experience war and peace (if it can be found) after war.

Home of the Brave: Somewhere in the Sand, a title that came from a radio interview with Editor Jeffery Hess on the Dennis Miller Show, features stories by twenty-two authors from around the United States, five of whom live and work in the Tampa Bay area, including professors from Eckerd College and South University, as well as two prior enlisted women, one of whom served as a mechanic, machine gunner, and recovery specialist in Iraq. The cover image for Home of the Brave: Somewhere in the Sand was a photograph taken by Staff Sergeant Ruth Pagan, who serves with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, in Fort Carson, Colorado. The image, “Sunset over Kandahar,” was captured on Christmas Day during a mission to deliver duffle bags of goodies by Chinook helicopter to five different outlying forward operating bases. A portion of this book’s proceeds will help fund the DD-214 Writer’s Workshop (established 2007), an independent workshop for military veterans that meets weekly in Carrollwood. Press 53 books are distributed throughout the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Europe, and Australia by Ingram and their partners, and are available wherever fine books are sold, including www.Press53.com.

try singer-songwriter Aaron Parker, with an intimate, solo performance. Americana band HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL (HGWT), recipient of multiple “Best of the Bay” awards, began as a solo, acoustic outlet for Burke. American Songwriter Magazine called many of their songs “organic, infectious Americana pop.” Since then, HGWT has evolved into a full band, releasing three fulllength albums and touring extensively. HGWT’s music has been featured in national commercial campaigns and TV shows such as the PBS series Roadtrip Nation and CBS’s The Good Wife. HGWT headlined the Center’s 2011 and 2012 Blessing and a Curse Music Festival, named after a song from the band’s 2008 album, Casting Shadows Tall as Giants. Burke’s return to the Center will feature some of his solo material with a mix of HGWT favorites. Advanced tickets to the Aaron Parker concert featuring Matt Burke are $12 for members and $16 for non-members. Admission on the day of the show is $14 for members and $18 for non-members. Melanie Safka first attracted national attention the summer of 1969 when she stepped onto the stage at Woodstock. As dawn broke, and rain began to fall, she performed on a stage that transformed a generation and changed music forever. Featured performers on the schedule include: international folk musicians Jammin’ Divas on Sept. 13; comedian G. David Howard on Sept. 14; “Blind” Willie James and Blue Situation on Oct. 25; Melanie on Nov. 22; and audience favorite the Sounds of Soul, with an encore presentation of A Motown Christmas on Dec. 19. The Sounds of Soul are no strangers to the Center, having performed twice before to a sold out crowd. “We are really excited to host the Sounds of Soul for a third time,” says executive director Paul Berg. “Our patrons love the energy they bring to the stage. The last time they were here, we sold out their show in record time.” G. David Howard and “Blind” Willie James will also return to the Center after receiving positive audience feedback. “James was just here in May,” says Berg. “It was a successful show, but this time around he is planning to include a few surprises so audiences will be treated to a different experience”

Erica Paradise Will Make Getting Your Home Loan Easy and Affordable! By Alexis Selby With roots dating back to 1938, for over 75 years, direct lender JMC Funding has secured a strong foundation, helping thousands of families across the country by providing customized mortgages at very competitive rates. As Senior Mortgage Banker and Team Leader for JMC’s Florida division, local Carrollwood resident Erica Paradise, MBA, is a true asset to the community and the company, working around the clock to help homeowners throughout the state to reach their refinancing, second home, and first time homebuyer dreams. Following in the footsteps of her mother, who owned a mortgage company in New York, Erica realized her love of the mortgage industry while accompanying her mother on client visits. She says, “I love what I do. There is nothing more rewarding than the joy you feel when you know you are helping someone and what really enticed me to become a mortgage banker was

the opportunity to help people to move into their new homes.” Utilizing her vast knowledge in the financial industry, including a Masters in Finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and her experience working as a Mortgage Banker, Erica, who is fluent in both Spanish and English, serves her clients with the highest level of expertise. She takes a very hands-on approach, guiding her clients throughout the entire process and helping to customize a mortgage plan that’s right for them. Her comprehension of the financial markets and how it coincides with the mortgage industry provides her with an in-depth understanding in regards to what is best for each client and their individual needs. “Securing a mortgage can be a very stressful process and I make it as easy as possible,” says Erica. “I take a holistic view of mortgage needs, and take the time to explain to my clients the pros and cons of their different options. My financial background really helps when dealing with clients of all

goals and backgrounds.” One customer writes, “Our realtor recommended Erica to us immediately when we were ready to proceed with financing for our new home. From our first interactions, to work on pre-approval, all the way to our closing (which she actually attended in person), Erica demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, experience and responsiveness. No question went unanswered at any time. To the contrary, she answered every question quickly and honestly. When I hear people talk about how difficult their mortgage process was it seems like an alternate reality to the experience I had with Erica. She was thorough and amazing! We feel 100% confident that we received the best interest rate due to Erica's keen sense of timing and understanding of market conditions. I would, without question, recommend Erica to anyone ready to finance a home. She was our champion from start to finish!” When dealing with any mortgage, time is of the essence, which is why it’s good to know you have someone like Erica on your side; someone who will work thoroughly and persistently to close your deal in as little time as possible. In addition to the in-house resources that are provided by JMC Funding, Erica also has her own list of professional resources who assist her in easing through the closing process, including a Board Certified Real Estate Attorney who currently works in the same office as her. She says, “Another way in which JMC stands out is that we have our own underwriters and processors, so every thing is done in house. This is really important because every situation is different, and if I have a question I can just walk down the hall

and get it answered immediately. This results in a much quicker transaction. Homeowners and realtors really appreciate that because I can close any deal in 30 days.” When you attain a mortgage with Erica, you get all the benefits of a large company, such as a strong financial backing and a huge support system, while still receiving the personalization and attentive service that she strives to provide to each and every customer. Erica says, “What ever the price range, I make every customer feel like they are the only customer and I stay on top of every deal to make sure everything runs smoothly.” If you are thinking about buying a home, it is imperative that you get preapproved now – even if you are looking to purchase in six months from now. Not only will it help with the success of your loan in the future, but it is necessary for you to have pre-approval before putting an offer in. Thankfully, the team of experts at Bain Complete Wellness is on a mission to educate and empower people to live healthy, happy, pain-free lives. They accomplish this through an integrative, neurologically based approach to healthcare that includes Physician and Chiropractic Services, Nutrition Consultation, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, and Massage/Bodywork. Dr. Bowser was attracted to Bain Complete Wellness due to Dr. Bain’s reputation for working with professional athletes; Dr. Bain is the team chiropractor for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and co-founder and medical director of the Athletes Compound at Saddlebrook Resort, where pro sports stars train off-season. As much as Dr. Bowser loves sports, he was most impressed with the diversity of Dr. Bain’s practice and the profound impact he and his team of experts had on entire families, especially babies. Although Dr. Bowser still loves to work with athletes and is a go-to chiropractor for USF athletic teams, he is proud to be the primary care physician for numerous Carrollwood families. That being said, it is not unusual to see many of your favorite hockey stars from the Tampa Bay Lightning in the office. In fact, In-Arena Host and Fox Sports reporter, Brittany Zion recently recorded a video segment featuring a sports performance training and chiropractic treatment session at the office with Lightning Forward PierreCedric Labrie. According to Dr. Bowser, “the terrible misconception of chiropractic care is that it is only indicated for the treatment of trauma due to automobile crashes or other accidents causing personal injury, particularly back or neck pain. Of course, it is an excellent source of rehab for these injuries and we gladly help people recover from acci-

dents, but it is important to recognize that it offers so much more, since it is a primary means of effectively treating a person’s neurology.” One of the most important things Dr. Bowser feels he and his team help people deal with is stress. “Stress can be physical, emotional or chemical,” he says, “and the body doesn’t care what type it is. Regardless, it creates negative chemistry within the nervous system that – if left untreated – can cause significant problems.” He says that, too often, people are under the impression that the body is just supposed to just “deal with stress.” That’s why he believes it is important to educate them to understand that your body is only able to heal itself when given the proper nutrients, environment, and treatments. According to Dr. Bowser, people would be a lot healthier if they thought of their bodies as analogous to cars. He says, “we all understand that we need to give our cars the appropriate fuel and perform regular maintenance like oil changes and filter replacements.” “It’s simply about making the right choices,” he adds. “We choose high octane gasoline for our expensive sports cars because we recognize the value, but we make terrible choices in our own diets – blind to the value of our health.” Dr. Bowser, Dr. Bain and all the experts at Bain Complete Wellness believe the key to living well is making the right choices for your health. As such, they are dedicated to providing the inspiration, education, and support to help people “choose right now,” which is the brand’s tagline. They accept all insurances and work with patients to ensure they receive the care they need, regardless of financial circumstances. In closing, Dr. Bowser says, “We often start off caring more about our patients’ health and wellness than they do. Our goal is to get them to care as much as we do, and when they do, we consider that a true success!” To start making the right choices for your health, visit Dr. Bowser and his team at the Carrollwood office, located at 2901 Busch Lake Blvd. in Tampa. Office hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri. 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.; Tues. 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.; they are closed Thurs. and available on Sat. and Sun. for emergencies only. Westfall Roofing Built on Quality, Security & Tradition By Kim Thomas The roofs over our heads are vital to meeting our basic needs, yet most of us never think about the beating a roof takes year after year in Florida’s heat, wind and rain until a problem arises. Unfortunately, at that point, repairs are more costly. If your home’s roof is 10–15 years old, then it’s time to find an experienced roofing contractor with an excellent reputation for quality work – before your roof springs a leak! Westfall Roofing is one of the most well respected roofing companies in the Tampa Bay area, and has provided roofing services to more than 12,000 satisfied customers over its 24year history. Serving both residential and commercial clients, Westfall Roofing is a GAF Master Elite Roofer, as well as a Certainteed Shingle Master roofer and an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, a certification awarded to a mere one percent of roofing contractors in North America. And, Westfall Roofing has great reviews on Angie’s List to go along with its A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. The company meets all roofing needs, from new construction to complete removal and replacement of old roofing. Westfall Roofing also installs skylights, gutters, soffit and fascia, as well as attic insulation and is proficient in all types of roofs from simple three-tab asphalt shingles to dimensional, metal, slate and tile, as well as other roof systems such as modified bitumen, Gerard (a stone-coated metal roof), and more. was founded by Kirk and Maria Westfall in 1989 and is still family-owned and operated by the Westfall Family. Kirk, president, is a Florida licensed building contractor and is very active in every aspect of running the company. Maria is the office manager and the Westfall’s son Ryan is vice president and sales manager, while his wife Anissa is the company’s marketing manager. The “Westfall Roofing family” also includes receptionist/purchaser Angelica Guevara and roof consultant Michael Alvarez, a former U.S. Marine who served in Iraq after enlisting shortly after 9/11. Michael has five years of experience and enjoys helping Westfall’s customers find the best roofing solutions for their needs. This is a family that truly cares about each other, about their business and about making sure they are giving their customers the best quality work at the best price possible. Meeting with Marketing Director Anissa Westfall, I was impressed with Westfall Roofing’s commitment to putting its customers’ best interests first. “A roof is an investment,” said Anissa. “We want to educate our customers on the ways that they can actually save money when they get a new roof.” Anissa’s blogs on Westfall Roofing’s website (westfallroofing.com) are informative and relevant, covering a variety of topics such as, “How a New Roof Can Save You Money” and “How a Roof Gets Replaced” to “Who’s Afraid of the Big-Brand Roof?” People often turn to big brand stores that offer roofing because they feel like the big name guarantees a good job at a good price, but that

isn’t necessarily the case when subcontractors are hired to do the work. Because Kirk is a Florida licensed general contractor, Westfall Roofing offers wind mitigation inspections, which can give homeowners a significant savings on their homeowner’s insurance. With Westfall Roofing on the job, you will receive quality products, friendly and personable service and lasting satisfaction. There is a Westfall on every Westfall Roofing job. Customers can expect to see Kirk or his brother, production manager Paul Westfall, every day, inspecting every jobsite and making sure that every customer gets the service that Westfall Roofing is known for. “This company is important to us,” explains Anissa. “With 25 years behind us, we don’t take this business lightly. We are professional, quality roofers and Kirk is great – he is very technically knowledgeable and cares about every job. Many times he is out there swinging a hammer himself.” “I was very impressed with the owner Kirk,” says Westfall Roofing customer Michael Siegel. “He came out to

the job almost every day and his brother was here every day supervising. They are very organized and always were a step ahead so that everything was very efficient.” Michael’s roof was 17 years old and was in very poor repair. “My roof is big, 2.7 times the size of the average roof. There was a lot of work to be done; they put the ‘sticky stuff’ down and they replaced six skylights, too. Westfall Roofing did everything as promised; they were very clean and very respectful of my landscaping. Even my lawn guy was impressed because there weren’t any nails left around.” The “sticky stuff” Mr. Siegel referred to is an upgraded underlayment, which is a peel-and-stick material that helps with wind and provides a second moisture barrier and another layer of protection from hail. There have been other upgrades in roofing materials. Anissa explains, “In the 90s you couldn’t find a shingle with a wind rating over 65 mph and now shingles are rated for up to 130 mph winds.” Attic insulation recommendations have changed as well, and fortunately, Westfall Roofing provides insulation installa-

tion to its customers because when the roof is off, it is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to energy-saving R60 insulation, and they are able to get every corner fully covered.

you that summer is the busiest time of year for them because most people don’t think about replacing their roofing until it leaks, demanding immediate attention. It is no different for Westfall Roofing, and though the company is committed to responding to emergencies and completing every job in a

timely manner, Westfall Roofing advises that when possible, it is best to plan ahead to have your roof replaced in the fall or winter. “It’s simple supply and demand,” says Anissa. “In the summertime, the demand for roofing supplies goes up, especially if there is a storm, and that forces the cost of a new roof

up.” Plus, if there is a storm and you have damage along with many others, supplies may even run out and suppliers may then provide lesser products just to meet the demand. Westfall Roofing provides free estimates, so if your roof is older than ten years, you’ve got nothing to lose from getting an expert analysis of your roof’s remaining life. You may even be able to plan ahead for the best possible savings. Westfall Roofing customer Grace Torres says, “I called two other companies out to give estimates, but when Westfall Roofing came out, they treated me like a family member instead of just another customer or a number. I’ve already recommended them to a couple of people. I was thrilled with their service both before and after the job. Kirk was there every day to check on the workers and to make sure that we were pleased with what was going on.” Westfall Roofing is located in Tampa at 5008 W Linebaugh Ave., Suite 54.
