By Katie Thomas The Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Pasco County was founded in 2006 as a prevention coalition building a network involving the local community in substance abuse prevention and awareness efforts. With a mission to, “develop, motivate and encourage strategic relationships that reduce county risk factors and decrease substance abuse rates among youth and adults,” ASAP gauges the extent of local alcohol and drug abuse and associated problems. By identifying the most important local substance abuse problems, ASAP is able to target strategies that promote healthy norms. ASAP monitors trends over time in order to evaluate the effectiveness of prevention programs and initiate policies for change. A Business Built on Caring for Others More than 20 years ago, as a single mother, Donna started cleaning as a 2nd job to earn extra money for her family. It quickly became clear to both her and her clients that caring for people’s houses was her purpose, a way to make others feel good about their surroundings. Donna was crowned “the cleaning angel” by one of her first clients, an elderly lady she bonded with who was under Hospice care. One day, after Donna left a crystal angel for

her, the lady told her caretaker that Donna was her cleaning angel, and shortly after passed away. All these years later, Donna is still emotional as she tells the story of how she came to name her business. Donna comes from a hard-working family of entrepreneurs and grew up with a strict work ethic. Being half Italian and half French Canadian, she was raised to be a hard worker, honest

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles Expands to Carrollwood! Since the first Neighborhood News hit mailboxes in New Tampa back in 1993, the publication has continued to grow. In 2008, our publisher Tim Selby sold the New Tampa and Wesley Chapel publications to his 50/50 business partner, and focused on the Trinity and East Lake area publications. The Selby family now has five Neighborhood News & Lifestyles newsmagazines, reaching over 80,000 mailboxes in Trinity, East Lake, Odessa/ Lutz / Land O’ Lakes, Westchase and now the Carrollwood area! For the past 20 years, Neighborhood News & Lifestyles has been keeping the community informed and helping local businesses grow and expand with our “hyper-local” publication, by offering unprecedented color and glossy ads and providing in-depth, personable articles about the fabulous businesses that serve you and the neighborhood events that keep your community strong and connected. Like the other Neighborhood News & Lifestyles newsmagazines, the new Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News

They Just Love to Dance Pat Griebel’s Silver Follies Dancers took to the stage at Heritage Springs as part of their annual performance. The dancers consist of a cast of 28 women over the age of 55. Griebel, who has been performing professionally since she was three years old, and for 18 years in Florida, says, “I have always loved to dance and hopefully I bring that joy to all of my dancers.” Heritage Springs Performing Arts Center in Trinity is just one of their many venues. They also bring their special two-hour performance to Seven Springs Country Club, Timber Greens, and Meadow Oaks once each year. At other times, they perform at clubs, libraries and civic associations, nursing facilities, charitable organizations and private parties in Pasco, Pinellas and parts of Hernando. At Heritage Springs they danced and sang a “Tribute to Fred Astaire” to a sold-out audience. Colorful costumes complimented dancing to numbers such as Top Hat, Cowboy’s Sweetheart and Carolina in the Morning; they also featured grandmothers and grand-

daughters dancing to Daddy. In its prime, 60 seniors made up the troupe with an average age of 62; they entertained at civic and community centers and assisted living facilities, and at their annual show, “The Silver Follies Revue.” The troupe has dwindled some––from 60 to 28 students ranging in age from 64 to 83. “At this age (each costume change) takes us a while,” chuckles Ann Poole, 72. Poole purchased her very first pair of tap shoes 11 years ago. Since then, Poole has been going strong, continuing the gig even after her own granddaughters outgrew the stint on stage a few years ago. “I’m having a ball,” she says. “I love it – just love it!“ says Carole Turner, 75, who was named for actress Carole Lombard and is now in her 10th

year with the troupe. She has had some prior experience performing, having danced as a Sparkelette in her younger years in Bridgeport, CT. “I think the camaraderie and the music is tremendous and especially the enthusiasm,” said Donna Harris, 75, who has earned the admiration of her fellow dancers for returning to the troupe after having both knees replaced. The Silver Follies Dancers are a vibrant group and are determined to just dance right through – they just love to dance! For more information, please contact Griebel at 727-505-7152. Goodwill Superstore Comes to Trinity Goodwill is closing its long-time Port Richey store and is opening a Goodwill Superstore in Trinity. At 26,000-square-feet, the Trinity store will be twice as large as its Port Richey store. The new store is expected to open in early summer on S.R. 54 between Duck Slough and Trinity Blvds. It is also expected that the Goodwill Superstore will draw some high-end donations. In recent years, stores such as Pier 1, Buffalo Wild Wings and Target have closed the doors in their Port Richey locations in favor of keeping their doors open in Trinity. Census data confirms that the me-

dian household income in Trinity is $86,593 while in Port Richey it is $34.063. About 2.6% of residents in Trinity have lived below the poverty level at some point during the last 12 months, while in Port Richey the figure is more than 23%. Jennifer Fleming Lugo, spokeswoman for Goodwill Industries says, there’s a good reason for building its new thrift store in an upscale area. “That’s kind of our business model,” she explains. “We have a store in middle-income areas or high demographic areas, (because) it brings us better donations. Better donations bring better sales, which means more programs we can fund.” Offiicials estimate that it will cost about $5 million to build the new store. “A drive-through, drop-off at the Trinity site is already accepting donations,” says Lugo, adding that “17 employees at the Port Richey store will be offered jobs at the Trinity location and another

30 positions will be added when the larger location opens.” The store will be stocked with donated clothing, furniture and household items, as well as a variety of new products. Port Richey will not be left high and dry. There are numerous other thrift stores in the Port Richey area including the Salvation Army on Ridge Rd., the Hernando-Pasco Hospice on Massachusetts Ave., Connections Job Development at 6334 U.S. Hwy. 19, and the Volunteer Way on Congress St., as well as many church-run stores. Goodwill offers values on everything from nearly new, designer-label clothing to brand new merchandise. Sales at 15 Goodwill retail stores in W. Central Fl. support Goodwill’s services for people with disabilities and other special needs. The more money a Goodwill location makes, the more they can fund employment and training services for the underemployed and unemployed.

“Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Beyond” By Katie Thomas Ichiban Sushi Asian Bistro is located in the Trinity Village Center, on the corner of Duck Slough Boulevard and State Road 54. Serving up delicious, fresh menu items with Asian ingredients in a relaxing, cozy atmosphere, Ichiban Sushi always appeases your palate with uncommonly good food. Whether you are in the mood for a Thai, Chinese or Japanese dish – Ichiban Sushi Asian Bistro will cater to you and guests with impeccable service and fantastic dishes! Ichiban, which means “number one” in the Japanese language, is a very fitting name for the restaurant because it is a “number one” favorite sushi spot in the area. Recently,

10

Ichiban renovated their dining space and now offers more seating in their ever-enchanting dining room. “I have my favorite sushi places in all different cities but I lucked out with this one being so close to home,” says local diner J.D. “I love the renovations and remodeling. The staff knows me by name and is always welcoming and patient with my large corner table of kids... or my small corner booth with a friend.” Ichiban added Thai-inspired items to their already wonderful menu after renovations were complete. The expansion at Ichiban includes new menu items, soft lighting for a chill atmosphere and two large private rooms for parties. The private rooms are tastefully decorated and sit up to ten peo-

ple comfortably; truly the perfect spot for a cozy get together with friends! Not only is Ichiban a favorite hotspot for the freshest, tastiest sushi around, the talented sushi chefs at Ichiban will customize the roll you want to fit your taste buds! If you’re in the mood for extra avocado or eel sauce, no problem! It’s done. “Our sushi chefs, Jerry and David, have eight years of experience behind the sushi bar,” says owner Vicky Chen. That experience translates into some delicious sushi rolls that are unique to Ichiban. The Ichiban Roll (my favorite) is a combination of spicy tuna, sweet lobster tail, and freshly sliced avocado; rolled with white rice and topped with salty caviar. If you’re not in the mood for a raw fish delicacy—try any one of Ichiban’s non-raw, fish-style rolls such as the Spicy King Crab Roll, featuring king crab meat mixed with spicy mayonnaise and rolled inside out with rice, sesame seeds, tobiko and cool cucumber slices. New rolls are always being introduced on Ichiban’s Specials Board. When I visited Ichiban the new rolls featured included: The Happy Roll which was composed of fresh tuna, salmon and yellowtail wrapped

in soy paper and generously topped with eel, avocado, spicy mayo and eel sauce! The Crazy Roll is absolutely delicious and features mango, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna wrapped in soy paper and topped with spicy king crab. The Rock’n’Rolla was one my favorite rolls featured on the Specials Board; peppered tuna with tempura crunches inside with salmon, eel and avocado on top! There are so many wonderful rolls to choose from, both cooked and raw, that your taste buds are assured great satisfaction! Ichiban has never disappointed my taste buds and I guarantee you will not be disappointed with their wide selection of handrolled sushi! So Many Choices at Ichiban! The wonderful thing about Ichiban Sushi is the vast amount of choices on the menu. If you are not a fan of sushi, Ichiban offers traditional Chinese, Thai and Japanese favorites, offering everything from egg rolls, fried crab Rangoon, miso and egg drop soup to General Tso’s chicken, Moo Goo Gai Pan, orange chicken, pad Thai and a variety of sweet-&-sour dishes, plus much, much more. There are choices of appetizers, soups, en-

Ichiban even has a diet and healthy dish selection, all of which are steamed with sauce on the side. To flavor dietetic items such as chicken and shrimp with mixed vegetables, you can choose from six different satisfying sauces. My favorite is the garlic sauce, which is a bit on the spicy side and adds a little kick to an already flavorful entree. Lunch & Happy Hour Too The prices are very reasonable at Ichiban, especially when compared to how big and satisfying portions are served. Ichiban offers lunch specials

every day, Monday through Sunday, until 3 p.m. (excluding holidays). Sushi Bar Lunches come with any three rolls, miso soup and a green salad. You could also try one of Ichiban’s many Asian Lunch Entrees, which are all served with jasmine, pork fried or brown rice and your choice of wonton, egg drop soup, miso soup or a crunchy eggroll. I really enjoy the Thai Mango Sauce lunch entrée with mango, bell pepper, basil and chicken – YUM! Happy Hour at Ichiban is Sunday through Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. Try a house beer or wine and get it at 2-for-1 pricing! Several grades of premium sake

are available to purchase by the bottle. The highest grade of sake available is Junmai Dai-Ginjyo, which includes many different bottles of sake to choose from such as Kansansui Kitaya, fermented with the water of the Yabe River; and Ugo No Tsuki, which translates to “moon after rain.” Sakes range from sweet to dry, light to rich. Other grades of sake available include Junmai Ginjyo, Tokubetsu Junmai and Junmai; each of which have several bottles to choose from, giving patrons a great assortment to choose from. If you prefer wine, the Oroya sushi wine from Spain is highly recommended. This delicate and crisp white wine is made to specifically comple-

ment sushi with its fine citrus flavors and a hint of floral. Ichiban has many other delicious wines to choose from and a beer selection that includes choices from Thailand, Singapore and Japan, as well as domestic beer. Ichiban Sushi is located at 10710 SR 54, Suite 104, in the Trinity Village Center. It is open Mon.–Thurs., 11 a.m.–10:30 p.m.; 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on Fri. and Sat.; and noon–10 p.m. on Sun. Takeout orders also are available and you can always call ahead if you’d like to make a reservation for a large party. Please call 727-372-5888 for more information.

The Better Back Store – Everyday Solutions for a Healthier Spine! By Kim Thomas The Better Back Store in New Port Richey has virtually everything you can think of to comfort and support your spine. After my visit, I urge everyone who wants to keep a healthy back to visit The Better Back Store, formerly of Palm Harbor located at 4018 Little Road in New Port Richey for the past 2 1/2 years after relocating from Palm Harbor. And, if you are flat on your back in pain, you can shop online 24/7 at www.TheBetterBackStore.net and have the back-saving support you need shipped right to your door. The store is stocked with items to bring you comfort, from bedding and bed wedges, to lumbar-supports of every type and ergonomically designed chairs, massage pads and so much more! The Better Back Store has the products that you need to have a healthier back at home, in your car and at the office. And you’ll love the people! Owner Theresa Hyatt and Laurie Schaefer are so helpful and friendly

that their customers rave. “I love coming here,” said Janice, who visits frequently to purchase alkaline water by the gallon from the store. “It’s like family here. This is a caring place. The people who work here are awesome and really are here to help others.” Selling alkaline water by the gallon is a service that The Better Back Store provides that a lot of customers take advantage of. I spoke with four or five people and they all said the same thing about the alkaline water – that they are feeling good and they are not going to stop. I heard a lot of great testimonials about the benefits of alkaline water and would love to share them all but that is another article! One retired doctor who lives in Heritage Springs said, “I drink it because it makes sense.” The Better Back Store offers a free two-week trial run to new customers who want to try the alkaline water. Take a Tour of The Better Back Store I certainly enjoyed my tour of The Better Back Store with Theresa,

who is extremely knowledgeable about the products in the store, many of which come in different sizes or can be custom-fit to your body to provide the support you need. Theresa and Laurie will show you around the store and don’t be shy about trying out the products. Palm Harbor resident Margaret came to look at the Herman Miller office chairs and the inversion table her husband wanted her to try, and though she was a bit nervous about being fully inverted, she was able to relax while Theresa and Laurie showed her the slow, easy way to let your body fight gravity. Margaret was really impressed with the instant relief she felt on her spine and wanted to stay inverted for the full five minutes (five minutes three times daily is recommended). Inversion tables reduce stress to your spine and back muscles, increase blood circulation, and reduce tension throughout the body, using gravity to treat your pain. When the pull of gravity is reversed, your joints and muscles are able to decompress naturally, reducing your back pain as they do.

your car and sure to make driving more comfortable. “We custom bend the lumbar to fit each customer,” says Theresa, adding “they are primarily made for car seats but will work in virtually any chair too.” A lot of us spend a lot of time on our, ahem, backsides, and The Better Back Store has seat wedges, sacro wedges, posture wedges and more to make your seat a little kinder to your spine. The wedges make a significant difference in the comfort of the average chair. Theresa said that every now and then Dr. Oz will mention the Sacro Wedgy, and they fly out the door! If you want something better than the average chair outfitted with wedges and cushions, check out the awesome Herman Miller office chairs, which are sized A, B and C because when you are considering back comfort and health, one size does not fit all and it is more than up and down that needs adjusting. Sit in a Herman Miller Chair and put your feet on one of the rocking foot rests and you will realize what it should feel like while you are working. The arms are fully adjustable, both in/out and up/down, and the lumbar support can be moved to fit your back perfectly. The chairs rock or lock and when you tilt forward, you can still feel the lumbar support. The Herman Miller chairs might just make you feel so good that you’ll be more productive. Throw in a heated massage cushion and keep stress at bay while you work away. My favorite was the Herman Miller Aeron Posture Fit in a size B, but I also really liked the Saddle Seat and thought it would be great for someone who is moving side-to-side a lot like an artist. It forces you to sit up straight and engage your core. Another interesting chair is the Kneeling Chair, which seems like it might feel strange to sit

on, but you can actually feel the tension release out of your back when you get into position on the chair and you feel fully supported. Theresa said the kneeling chair can improve your posture. There are actually a few items to help improve posture such as the Posture Shirts for both men and women. A Posture Trainer that actually beeps when you slouch. Neck supports and cervical collars of all kinds abound and there is even an over-the-door cervical traction set for gentle traction. BioSkin ankle braces, wrist braces and elbow braces provide support for achy joints and tennis/golfer elbow and the BioSkin BackJack Flex is great for lower back support. The SwingBack is a favorite with golfers. Take it from a mom, if you are looking for a great Mother’s Day gift, The Better Back Store has some great choices like a neck and shoulder tapping massager that also can be maneuvered to massage the mid back, low back and buttocks; with a tapping motion that hits those trigger spot areas perfectly, from an easy tap at level 1 or the power of level 10 that will put a pounding on those painful knots. Another nifty favorite is the inexpensive Thera Cane for deep pressure massage. The cane-shaped pole with a rounded end allows you to target triggers without the need of help. There is no reason to ignore back pain or to force yourself to work in an uncomfortable position when there are solutions at The Better Back Store. The Better Back Store is located at 4028 Little Rd. in New Port Richey. Hours are Mon., Wed., Fri., 10 a.m.–7 p.m. & 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on Tues., Thurs. and Sat. Providing a Lifetime of Healthy Oral Care for Kids By Julie Kanehl Trinity Pediatric Dentistry is a brand new state-of-the-art pediatric dental practice that is geared toward making the entire family comfortable. Located in the Trinity Professional Plaza, at the corner of Little Road and Mitchell Boulevard, Trinity Pediatric Dentistry treats infants, children and teens. The moment they walk into the office, parents are greeted by Trinity Pediatric Dentistry’s friendly, experienced staff members who are dedicated to the health of every child under their care. Children are instantly put at ease with the happy, familiar Disney characters throughout the office, not to mention the many fun activities to play with while they wait to be seen. There are iPads filled with kid-friendly games to play on, toys and activities on one side of the waiting room, and a calm and relaxing area on the other side for mom and dad. All of

Dr. Chris is a Florida native from nearby St. Petersburg, and he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Emory University where he double majored and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He then attended the University of Florida College of Dentistry (UFCD), where he earned his doctorate with High Honors. He continued his education at the prestigious University of Florida/Shands Hospital by completing his residency and specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry. No stranger to dentistry, Dr. Chris’s parents are in the dental field, and his beautiful new wife, Robin, is a dentist as well! Dr. Chris says, “My hope is that my patients have a smile on their face when they come in and a smile when they leave.” One local mom said, “I took my daughter to Trinity Pediatric Dentistry…Dr. Chris and his staff were so awesome with my daughter. She is normally nervous at the dentist, but she came out smiling and wanting to floss! The office is very cool with flat screen TVs for kids to watch while they get their teeth worked on. They give personal attention to their patients in a positive environment. I highly recommend them!” Families Love Dr. Chris Working with children is a bit of a calling. Ask any teacher, pediatrician or in this case, pediatric dentist, and they’ll tell you that working with kids is something that they are naturally good at, and something that they really enjoy doing. Similarly, while completing his dental training, Dr. Chris rotated through the pediatric program and just knew that was where he belonged.

“I’ve always connected and related well to children, and I like to have fun and be myself while I’m at work,” says Dr. Chris. They call me Dr. Elmo because I do Elmo impersonations sometimes. The kids love it.” Wanting to create an office that would make everyone feel happy and comfortable, Dr. Chris actually had a team from Disney come in and decorate his practice, and kids from 1 to 99 get a kick out of that. The artists even added a cartoon version of their puppy, Frisco! He opened Trinity Pediatric Dentistry in August of 2012, and families love that it’s a fun, happy place to come and get those pearly whites taken care of. Parents love Trinity Pediatric Dentistry as well because their focus is on communication, prevention, and taking their time. Dr. Chris says, “Unlike other offices, I won’t double-book my patients. Instead, I book one family at a time, and I do that because I look at parents as part of the team.” He adds, “At each visit I give the parents a handout of information because I’m a resource to the parents. I want to make sure they’re able to assist with brushing and flossing. Prevention is definitely key.”

You’re in Great Hands With Dr. Cara Hacht By Julie Kanehl Chiropractic care is an effective, hands-on approach to pain management that can positively change the lives of people who deal with chronic pain caused by car accidents, injuries or even genetics. Cara Hacht, D.C., L.M.T., P.A., is a Chiropractic Physician and a Licensed Massage Therapist who has been offering chiropractic care in the New Port Richey area since 1997. She has been at her current practice, located at 8052 Old C.R. 54, just off of S.R. 54, for almost two years, and her patients rave about her personal approach, her relaxed opendoor policy, and her knack for truly listening to her patients. Patient Hildegard Naepflein said, “She’s a wonderful doctor. She really makes me feel better.” “Dr. Cara” has been a massage therapist since 1984, which is probably why so many of her patients say that she has such a healing touch. In 1994, she graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, and

since then she has been helping patients of all ages for nearly 20 years. Is Chiropractic for You? It’s no secret that back and neck pain are a common problem for many Americans, but if you’re one of the many who are tired of taking pills to hide the symptoms, and want a solution that can change your life, chiropractic is definitely for you. Chiropractic is an excellent solution for people of all ages, occupations and lifestyles. From babies who are growing and athletes who are competing, to people who drive all day, or sit in one place all day––everyone who feels back pain can find relief in the hands of a professional and experienced chiropractor like Dr. Cara. Getting to the root of the problem is what chiropractors do best, and the root of the problem is usually found in the muscular structure found around the spine. It’s what holds the body in place, and it can also be the place that can hurt the most when there’s been an injury or an accident. Instead of tricking the brain into

thinking the pain in gone by using medication, Dr. Cara adjusts and aligns the musculoskeletal structure of the body with the nervous system, allowing the body to heal. Dr. Cara says, “My philosophy is just to get to the base of the problem and we work on that with exercises, therapy, adjustments and massage.” How does she do it? Well, first she listens to you! Most of the time x-rays are given, which is easy to do because they are done on the premises, and then Dr. Cara uses technology like Chiropractic BioPhysics to get a clear picture of what is happening in your body. Chiropractic BioPhysics is a (front L-R) Nancy Raimo, LMT, Pattie technology that shows the alignBarratt (Back L-R) Jane Mundy, ment of your body, compared & Dr. Cara L. patients to strengthen their muscles using exercises and therapeutic techniques that are known to strengthen the body and to ease the strain on the nerves that are affected. Using a variety of chiropractic techniques, Dr. Cara can quickly make a huge impact on the quality of life that her patients lead. She offers traditional adjustments, instrumentation adjustments, drop work (which contrary to the way it sounds, is best for people who are currently in pain and have a hard time being adjusted), adjustments using an activator, electric muscle stimulation and a decompression table, which can ease the painful pressure that is caused when the spine is compressed. Chiropractic adjustments don’t hurt – they feel great! Dr. Cara explains, “Most of my patients absolutely love getting an adjustment. They actually look forward to the time that they can get adjusted because it feels terrific for them.” Missy, a long-time patient of Dr. Cara’s said, “I tried treatment from primary care, physical therapy and chiropractic. My chronic pain continued for many years without relief. Well as you know, you must find the correct

kind of chiropractic care!” She adds, “With problems in my L4 and L5 discs, she recommended the traction and the decompression tables. With these two treatment options, as well as her manual adjustment, I was feeling better than I had felt in two years.” Chiropractic is Affordable & Effective More than simply healing back and neck pain, Dr. Cara treats patients for a variety of other issues, with the goal of helping you lead a healthy, well-balanced life. She says, “I’m the gatekeeper for your healthcare.” She explains further on her website that “13 million people visit chiropractors as their primary health care provider.” Anthony said, “Dr. Cara has helped me with my tennis elbow and much more.” Dr. Cara’s office takes most health insurances including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United and she and her staff will work with patients to make sure that your care is affordable. Her practice is a very laid-back, comfortable place to come, and the overall feeling is of warmth and harmony. Melissa Grechniw says, “Dr. Cara is awesome. It’s casual, everyone

knows you by name, and Dr. Cara is always happy. There’s never a bad day here.” In addition to offering massage therapy herself, Dr. Cara also has an experienced and licensed massage therapist on the staff named Nancy Raimo, who offers massage options in a variety of styles from therapeutic to simply relaxing. “We care for our patients like we care for our family,” says Dr. Cara, “and everyone gets the same amount of my time. I really like to take my time with everyone.”

If you’re looking for a real, long-term solution to your pain, start feeling better by going to see Dr. Cara Hacht in New Port Richey. Her office is located at 8052 Old CR 54. Make Your Summer A Memorable One At YMCA Summer Day Camp Sunshine, blue skies, warmer temperatures and school winding down can only mean one thing – it’s time for summer camp! The YMCA of the Suncoast offers a safe and caring environment where kids and teens have fun, learn new skills, get outdoors, make friends and make memories. “Spending the summer at camp is not only a valuable and safe experience for youth, it’s also important to their personal development,” says G. Scott Goyer, President and CEO of the

YMCA of the Suncoast. “Camp helps youth develop social skills and decision-making skills, and learn from new experiences.” Camping experts at the YMCA say that summer camp can have a meaningful impact on youth in several ways: Youth experience “unstructured” playtime that they normally don’t have at home or school, thus learning how to become independent, make smart choices, solve problems and work with others. The experience of trying and learning new things, including adventurous outdoor activities, gives youth confidence and helps them develop healthy lifelong habits. As fewer youth are spending time outdoors, camp helps them develop an awareness and appreciation for nature. At camp youth are cared for and given guidance, and feel a part of a community, allowing them

to feel comfortable being themselves. Youth learn from other campers and counselors, and make new friends to share it all with. The YMCA provides exciting and educational summer camp options that appeal to both parents and kids from swimming and sports to cooking and dance with canoeing, science experimenting, and ocean exploring in between. The YMCA of the Suncoast’s

Whether you are looking at smokin’ hot sports cars, classy and sleek sedans, family-focused minivans, heavy-duty four-wheel-drive SUVs and trucks, the folks at Ferman will treat you right, making certain that you have a great experience. Ferman NCJD caters to its customers, honoring the Ferman legacy and tradition of exceptional service, selection and value that has been a trademark of Ferman dealerships throughout the years. Convenient to Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Northern Hillsborough and Northern Pinellas Counties, Ferman NCJD is located at the intersection of U.S. 19 North and S.R. 54 and is known for providing the Tampa Bay area with quality customer care in both its sales and service departments, and its supreme inventory of both new and pre-owned vehicles. There are currently more than 800 vehicles to select from at the diverse dealership, which has an outstanding, knowledgeable staff to help you find the car that is the perfect fit for your personal, unique style. The Ferman dealership has been a long-standing, reputable name in the Tampa Bay area since 1895 when Fred Ferman bought out his partner and became sole owner of Tampa Cycle Company. Ferman has served the area in transportation needs for over a century with uncompromised values and a mission to treat employees as family

30

You’ll find exceptional customer care and outstanding inventory at both Ferman Nissan and Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, which are located side-by-side at S.R. 54 and U.S. 19 N in New Port Richey and guests as friends. At age 28, Fred Ferman opened Tampa’s first auto dealership in 1902 after applying for and winning an Oldsmobile sales agency. As with the ever-evolving auto industry, Ferman has grown and changed with the times, but one thing has always stayed constant, Ferman works to earn your business one car at a time through service, selection and value. On a recent visit to Ferman NCJD of New Port Richey, I was thoroughly impressed after a tour of the dealership. The Ferman dealership is divided into two separate lots, located side by side; Ferman Nissan and Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge. General Sales Manager Keith Miller and General Manager Jason Whidden head up a team that will make sure your visit is worthwhile and satisfactory. Keith Miller says, “We take pride in serving guests with service that finds

them what they want that will fit their budget in a timely manner.” He and GM Jason Whidden explained that Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge has the largest truck inventory in the area. Dodge RAM trucks were voted 2013 Motor Trend truck of the year, and Ferman has a beautiful selection. Here at Ferman, your time will not be wasted. All prices at Ferman are from manufacturer’s point, you will never find addendum or additional markup on vehicles. No unnecessary packages are added to vehicles, ensuring that you get a great vehicle for a great price without the trivial expenses of unneeded upgrades. “Our stores are coming off their best month, selling over 340 cars in the month of March,” says Jason Whidden. “We owe thanks for our success to our wonderful guests and our Ferman team, who are completely dedicated to 100 percent customer satisfaction!”

Ferman Nissan – # 1 Dealer in Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus I first explored Ferman Nissan, receiving a tour from sales associate David. The premises sport beautiful new and pre-owned cars at competitive prices. David showed me around the lot and his knowledge about each car located within the Nissan dealership was really helpful in determining which car would be the best fit for me during our test-driving experience. I decided to drive a 2013 3.5 liter V6 Nissan Altima SV, which comes standard with remote engine start and offers drivers continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT’s smooth gear changing technology allows for a quick, smooth and beautiful drive. I enjoyed utilizing the rear view camera and lane assistance technology that the Altima was equipped with, along with the clear sound of XM radio (which is free for three months

with purchase of Nissan Altima!). There is nothing quite comparable to getting in a new car, decked out with the latest technology and feeling the performance of the vehicle come alive at the touch of a button. Smooth shifting with the sport pedal feature, allowed me to experience the adrenaline of some well-executed turns and to get a feel for the handling of the Nissan Altima. After driving the innovative, quick accelerating and ultra smooth Altima, it is easy to see why the vehicle is Ferman Nissan’s bestselling car so far for 2013. With a 5star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program, “best-in-class” fuel economy of 38 mpg, and advanced driver-focused technology, the 2013 Nissan Altima is the best in its class for a fun, smooth and safe drive! David showed me his personal favorite car at Ferman Nissan, the SL Juke, which is 100 percent Japanese and boasts three different driving options: normal, sport and eco (economy). Eco mode works to give greater fuel economy, while sport mode tightens shocks, brings the car lower to ground and gives more boost. The Juke is turbo-charged with a 1.84 cylinder engine and is a fantastic small car alternative to other sedans. “People absolutely love this car once they feel its power and experience how much fun it is to drive,” said David. “The interior is phenomenal with cool illuminated kick plates and the Rockford Fosgate sound system that comes standard with the Juke really rocks!” Ferman Nissan is the fastest growing Nissan dealer in the southeast and serves as the #1 Nissan dealer in Pasco, Pinellas, Hernando and Citrus counties. Dedicated to community as well as customers, Ferman Nissan is well known for working with Habitat for

Humanity; over 5,000 Nissan employees have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity since Katrina in 2005. Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge Ferman Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge offers you an unsurpassable amount of new and pre-owned inventory, as well as providing for all of your service/parts needs for Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, as well as other vehicles in its stellar service department. Sales associate John Salamone, who is passionate for his work, his family and his hobby as an artist, gave me a tour of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge side of the Nissan dealership. John and I test drove a couple vehicles from the lot and I had a wonderful time on the back roads of Anclote Road in a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Sport and a powerful 2013 Dodge Challenger. My first car was a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, and I have a special fondness for the wild-and-free, wind-in-yourhair feeling that driving a Jeep can give you. The Jeep that I drove at Ferman was extravagant and surpassed all my expectations! The Jeep Wrangler Sport’s 4x4 responsive 3.6 liter V-6 cylinder engine, paired with the classic Jeep design offers performance, style and ride enjoyment that leaves the driver feeling fully alive and excited to drive. Jeep Wranglers are completely authentic and whether you choose a hard or soft top, riding topless and free is easy, convenient and makes driving fun! I also test drove a fully deckedout Dodge Challenger SRT8 392; a beauty of a car, with stream-lined design, muscle car looks and a powerful HEMI engine under the hood. The heart of the SRT8 392 is a 6.4 liter Hemi V8 with 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. This car can move! In fact the SRT8 392 can go from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour

The Trinity Business Association Supports Local Businesses, Charities & Students By Julie Kanehl The Trinity Business Association is a local group of business professionals who live and work in our community, whose members are committed to giving back to Trinity by supporting local businesses, local charities and offering a scholarship for our local students. For more than ten years, the “TBA” as it’s commonly known, has been a successful way for many likeminded men and women to market and network their own businesses, while supporting local charities and making lifelong friends. Far more than your typical networking group, the TBA is unique in that it has a heart that beats for the people of Trinity, complete with empathy, compassion and a sincere support for one another. The TBA meets twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at the beautiful Fox Hollow Golf Club, which is located at 10050 Robert Trent Jones Parkway. Each meeting includes a

lovely meal and the chance to meet and mingle with old friends while making new ones. Professional and friendly, the TBA meetings are more educational than sales oriented, making each meeting fun and informative, and instead of pressing for leads, Trinity Business Association members place their focus on building relationships while building their businesses. This warm and welcoming organization currently has more than 30 members who shine in our community, from financial advisors to physicians, from consultants to accountants and from auto repair professionals to personal trainers. In fact, TBA’s members come from a myriad of backgrounds, industries and organizations. This is great, because it means that each meeting serves as a great opportunity for members to meet people outside of their field and to effectively educate others on what makes their businesses unique. In order to keep the organization diverse, the TBA limits its members to a few to each profession.

that makes the TBA so unique, the TBA’s third principle is to “take responsibility for making our community a better place to live and work by involving ourselves in different charitable organizations.” In fact, the TBA sees it as their duty to give back to the community, and so they truly do. In 2012 they supported local charities such as The Rap House (The Runaway Alternatives Program), which gives children from the ages of 10-17 in our county a place to turn in a time of need. The TBA also sponsors their annual Rap River Run, which is a 5k walk/run and kid’s adventure run that will take place on June 8th this year. The TBA also supports the Pasco PACE Center for Girls, The Fostering Kids Florida program and the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired & Blind. Another way that the TBA influences the Trinity area for the better is by offering a scholarship program that is open to J.W. Mitchell and Sunlake high school students. As part of their application process, students attend one of the TBA meetings and speak in front of the group to explain why they should be chosen as the scholarship recipient. It’s a great learning opportunity for the students and by offering a scholarship to local students, the TBA is truly supporting our youth and making a long-term impact on the Trinity community. The TBA raises funds for their charities through the generosity of their members and by holding events like their Trinity Community Expo, which will be held on October 7th this year. Members have booths for each of their respective businesses and it is such a great event, that people from the entire community come out to enjoy the food, win prizes and learn about the many businesses in Trinity. Membership Chair Gil McWilliams is very proud to be a member and says,

“We are a professional business organization …and we are a service organization as well, which gives us a common cause. More than that, though, we are a family. These people were really here when I needed them.” Becoming a TBA member is easy, affordable and the effects are long lasting because of the relationships that are built with the people in the organization. This is not the stiff clock-watching crowd that is so typical of other networking groups. Walk into a TBA meeting and you’ll find people embracing, laughing and shaking hands. To be considered for membership, each person must maintain a high standard of business ethics and be committed to attending each meeting. References and proof of licensing in the field in which you are joining to represent must be part of the application. Once approved by the board, TBA members enjoy the chance to meet a lot of really incredible people, build their businesses and positively impact the community. If you are looking for a networking opportunity that will not only give you a wonderful way to share and grow your business, but make friends while you impact the Trinity community for the better, than the TBA is for you. Members meet at the Fox Hollow Golf Club on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, 5:30–7 PM. If you would like an application or to learn more about the Trinity Business Association, visit www.trinitybusinessassociation.com email info@trinitybusinessassociation.com, find them on Facebook, or communicate with them via mail by sending correspondence to PO Box 693, Elfers, Fl, 34680-0693. Please note that Trinity Business Association meetings are private, but guests are welcome to attend for a small fee.

Carmelita’s Offers Deliciously Authentic Mexican Cuisine By Julie Kanehl Carmelita’s is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I’ll just start there. I have been going to Carmelita’s since I was in high school, and while I’m dating myself, I have to admit that in all of my travels, and in all of the years since, I have never found another Mexican restaurant that could take its place in my, well, heart. Why? Well, it’s got to be the chips and homemade salsa, because I can’t tell you how many memories have been made over one of their bowls of multi-colored chips and their neverending salsa, because it would just take too long! But then, maybe it’s the bright, friendly environment and knowing that every time I go, and no matter who I am there with, I know that we’re going to have a great experience. Or maybe it’s the fact that when I know I’m going to Carmelita’s, I find that I look forward to it all day and can’t stop thinking about whether I’m going to have the #36 (Tacos Al Carbon) or the #11 (Soft Tacos). I mean, I know they’re the basics, but they’re so delicious. I have no hope of duplicating the recipe at home, and no matter how often I try to give other places a try, they just don’t do it justice. Carmelita’s is just the real deal. So, prior to 2008, my husband and I would actually get in the car and drive all the way from Trinity to East Bay Drive in Clearwater to enjoy our favorite place, and I can tell you, we rarely stepped foot south of S.R. 60 without working in our favorite tacos. Thankfully, Carmelita’s opened up its Trinity location five years ago in the Greenbrook Plaza at 8526 Old C.R. 54, right next to Trinity Yoga Studio and Kelly’s Dance Academy. Since then, while I still sneak out to Carmelita’s for date night with my husband and meet my girlfriends there for sangrias, chips and salsa, and girltalk, it’s now the place that I bring my entire family for a tasty, affordable meal where even my pickiest daughter will clean her plate. For those of you who haven’t been to Carmelita’s yet, I can sincerely recommend it to you for its incredible food, its attentive staff and its familyfriendly atmosphere. The service is also incredibly fast, which is great when wanting a quick bite. Clean, bright

46

and fun, Carmelita’s is a great place to meet up with friends and family to enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. Mexican Cuisine de Abuelita’s Cucina The first Carmelita’s Mexican Restaurant was opened in St. Petersburg in 1983 by Vincent and Carmen Lopez, who created a menu that was based on their families’ secret recipes, creating an authentic Mexican cuisine that people couldn’t stop raving about. Eventually they expanded to include five locations, the newest being right here in Trinity. Jose Salazar and his wife Karla are the owners of the Trinity Carmelita’s, and they enjoy greeting their regulars by name, and welcoming new guests when they walk through the door. The Salazars are not new to the restaurant business, in fact, Jose has been part of the Carmelita’s family for about 20 years, starting as a busboy and working his way up through the restaurant! Today, he is proud to own and operate Carmelita’s here in Trinity, and this location proudly offers the same standards and the coveted secret recipes that long-time fans, like me, have come to expect and enjoy. Always affordable, the lunch and dinner menus at Carmelita’s have something for everyone from soup and salads to tostadas, and whether you like the basic tacos like I do, or you’re more in the mood for chimichangas, burritos and enchiladas, you won’t be disappointed. While the chips and salsa are to die for, there are a lot of Antojitos or appetizers to choose from, from nachos to quesadillas and jalapeno poppers to chicken taquitos. Carmelita’s offers some amazing specialties, like their Mexican pizza which is made with a crisp flour tortilla that is covered with frijoles, ground beef, chorizo, jack and cheddar cheese, tomatoes and topped with sour cream, guacamole and black olives. They also make Chiles Rellenos for those who like it hot! Chiles Rellenos is one hot chile poblano pepper filled with cheese and smothered with ranchero sauce and jack cheese. For those who like it a bit milder, you can substitute a New Mexico Hatch Chile. Tomales are also on the specialties menu, and these pork beauties come served in their traditional corn husk wrapping.

Carmelita’s has delicious, authentic Mexican fare and a festive ambiance! (Above) The festively dressed and friendly staff with owner Jose Salazar (r). Linda Taggart Smith loves to take her family to Carmelita’s and says, “The Chicken Enchiladas Verde are fabulous! The food, service and atmosphere are always great.” If you like fajitas, you will never want to have them anywhere else. Whether you have the chicken or the steak, the fajitas are juicy. The chicken

and the steak (I like to get a combination and try both because I can never decide), are cooked to perfection and they melt in your mouth when paired with their home made flour tortillas. The children’s menu is awesome as well, because the kids can get a great meal that includes a fountain drink and a side dish for only $4.99.

When Jeff Bush was killed in the Seffner sinkhole tragedy during February, Floridians everywhere received a scare. The stress and fear that a sinkhole can conjure can be eased through maintenance checks of your home’s foundation. “The sinkhole in Seffner received a lot of attention, but catastrophic cover collapse sinkholes are fairly rare,” assures Jim Flynn of L.R.E. “In fact, there were over 25,000 sinkhole insurance claims in Florida from 2006 to 2010 (according to The Senate Sinkhole Report), and less than 1 percent of those were considered catastrophic cover collapse. Large dropouts do occur, especially in the Tampa Bay area, but statistically it is rare.” L.R.E. is adamant about educating homeowners and takes pride in keeping Florida homeowners informed and knowledgeable about foundation solutions. The company’s website includes an entire section dedicated to information regarding sinkholes and the steps it takes to repair them. Flynn says, “We always tell people that we would never want to see them dealing with a sinkhole; but if it does happen, we will be there to help them along the way, which I believe is a testament to how we operate through a high standard of business ethics.” L.R.E. Donna explains, “The dedication and success in my cleaning business is due to the closeness of my wonderful family. I am proud and honored to say that I am following in the footsteps of my parents and grandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to the business.” In addition to her family’s influence, Donna attributes the success of her company to a determined attitude, a tremendous amount of ambition and meticulous attention to detail, which is accompanied by an unstoppable drive. An example of this drive was when after years of working on her own, she broke her ankle and hand in an accident. Donna knew she couldn’t continue cleaning on her own, and

Detailed Cleaning “I offer a very unique and personable cleaning service,” explains Donna. “My teams spend twice the time as other services for less money. The cleaning is top to bottom, complete and comprehensive. Donna realizes that many of her clients are working longer hours than ever. “They simply need help,” states Donna. “Even ten years ago, cleaning services were for the rich. Today, it is a necessity for many families and the cost is budgeted in just like the electric bill and utilities. The last thing my clients want to do on their day off is spend it cleaning their homes; time is precious and they would much rather be spending free time with family and friends.” Whether you are a retiree, busy with your career, or a full-time mom, Donna’s “Angels” will make your life easier. Ottawa, Canada / Trinity, Florida resident Steve Kesler has been very pleased with the yearround service of Donna’s Cleaning Angels at his Trinity home. He says, “The Cleaning Angels make sure that everything is perfect for us when we return.” Donna’s girls are fully equipped with everything they need to provide an exceptional clean in the most efficient way possible. The cleaning teams check off a list, covering everything from baseboards to the ceiling fans to the stainless steel hood over the stove. Donna explains that when her Cleaning Angels come to clean your house, they know their hard work is appreci-

Comment cards, meetings with the staff, and client calls to make sure the job was done correctly also help ensure customers are not only happy with the first cleaning, but every cleaning with Donna’s Cleaning Angels. Building honest, dependable relationships is just as important to Donna as providing quality cleaning. “My girls are ‘my girls’—we are like a close knit family,” says Donna. “I appreciate and take care of them and they appreciate and take care of our clients. It’s a win-win situation. Using the basic principles of mutual respect combined with good, old-fashioned elbow grease, the angels produce a heavenly sparkle. Our customers love our back-to-basics, old-fashioned cleaning techniques, often reminding them of how their grandmothers used to clean.” At the end of the day when it’s time to unwind, relax and enjoy a great meal, Donna and Steve frequently dine at local restaurants, including Central Park Restaurant in New Port Richey. Central Park’s owner Chris Michael loves to converse with them. “We’ve found that we have some of the same

customers,” says Donna. “And we agree that we are fortunate to advertise in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and we absolutely love the staff there.” Reflecting, Donna says, “At the end of the day I thank God for my blessings – the great people who work for me, a great business, my health, my home, my loved ones and my family. God bless you all.” If you are ready for a heavenly clean, call Donna’s Cleaning Angels at 727-942-8289. Gift certificates are available and perfect for Mother’s Day.

“ASAP” Continued from page 1 impact on reducing alcohol-related crashes, prescription pill overdoses deaths in Pasco County. ASAP Committees such as Alcohol Initiatives, Rx Abuse Prevention, Substance Exposed Newborns, Community Resources, Assessment and Evaluation Tools have made substantial progress in educating the community about substance abuse, prevention methods, and treatment options. Individual committees allow for complete focus on specific issues to strategic change in the environment. The committees are able to prioritize objectives, intercept the problem and collaborate together to put preventative measures in place. For one example, ASAP joined forces with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and a local grassroots group, Save Pasco, to present and ordinance to the county commissioners banning synthetic drugs from being sold in convenience stores. With the support of the community and ASAP’S outreach efforts, the ordinance was passed in a remarkable time of only ten months. This victory within the community is one of many accomplishments ASAP has achieved and there are many more initiatives in progress! ASAP’s dedication and involvement in the battle against substance abuse is making an impact throughout the area. Chrissie says, “We work together as a community to discuss what problems exist and from there we work to fill in the gaps and find solutions.” At present, ASAP has over 40 sectors of the community represented, but the coalition is always looking to expand membership and welcomes participation of the community citizens.

Community Action Plans Coalition Coordinator Chrissie Parris, Project Manager Liana Dean, and Project Coordinator Shelah Neece explained the inner workings of ASAP and the goals they strive to meet. ASAP developed three strategic action plans focused on major priorities that need to be tackled in 2013. The current top priorities are to: (1) Reduce the amount of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents and injuries; (2) Reduce the number of prescription-related overdoses and reduce the number of newborns going through withdrawal from drugs; and (3) Expand ASAP outreach to increase capacity to reach specific sectors of the community. In 2007, underage drinking cost

62

Pasco County $64 million which includes the costs associated with medical care, morbidity and mortality, crime, motor vehicle crashes, and fire destruction. To build community change, ASAP works with the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and Alcohol Beverage Tobacco (ABT) establishing relationships with local businesses to decrease access to alcohol by those underage. Alcohol sales compliance checks are used regularly as a tool to keep the community a safe and healthy place for our youth, ensuring that businesses are in compliance with the laws and ordinances regulating the sale of alcohol. ASAP champions those businesses helping to keep our youth safe by sending certificates of appreciation and running an article in their monthly enewsletter. In addition, ASAP uses media campaigns to target open house parties and underage drinking, including TV spots, billboards, cinemas and presentations to parents at several schools to help adults start the conversation on alcohol and other drugs with youth in their lives. ASAP is highly active during Red Ribbon Week activities at Pasco County schools and participates in MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) advisory council meetings. Primarily targeting alcohol abuse among young people in Pasco, STAND (Safe Teens Against Drugs) is a youth-led initiative for teens that want to be a positive influence in their community. Teens plan events and participate in activities to increase outreach to youth and adults. Young adult perspective provides new insight to the pressures teens face, how to challenge social norms, and ways to be a leader among peers. In order to combat the prescription pill epidemic, ASAP has been actively involved in education and putting programs in place that raise awareness as well as give people the opportunity to voice concerns and questions. ASAP has installed drop sites for safe pharmaceutical disposal and participates with the Pasco Sheriff’s Office in many take-back events, in which the community can drop off unused and expired prescription medications. In 2011 and 2012, over 4,000 pounds (!) of safely disposed medications were collected through permanent drop off locations and take back events. Proper disposal of medications helps to reduce misuse and abuse. “Be Aware, Don’t Share” is a slogan ASAP implements, to remind people that sharing prescriptions can result in accidental overdoses and death. “Pasco be SMARxT” is the

branding for the triad of ASAP, BayCare Behavioral Health, and Pasco Sheriff’s Office, tackling a series of problems as a result of prescription drug abuse and substance exposed infants. ASAP is teaming up with pain management physicians to develop recommendations of best practices to reduce doctor shopping and prescription pill abuse. BayCare Behavioral Health has increased the number of beds for medically supervised withdrawal in their detoxification center. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office is expanding their intelligence-led policing efforts to target prescription pill crime. Pasco be SMARxT also works with the Healthy Start Coalition of Pasco in educating obstetrician offices about screening pregnant women for prescription drug abuse. “Talk it Up, Lock it Up” is a statement that promotes adults to talk to youth, families and friends about the dangers of substance abuse and also teaches people the importance of safely locking up all medications and alcohol. ASAP encourages parents to improve skills to communicate with their kids, learn substance abuse signs and symptoms, and reduce opportunities for risk taking behaviors. Chrissie stated, “We focus on the exceptions to the problem and point out the posi-
