When choosing a window treatment, there’s a lot to consider, be it privacy, beauty, style, fashion or functionality that you’re after, the curtains, blinds or shutters that you choose can have a big effect on the overall design of your home. In fact, some window treatments can make such a statement as to improve the value of your home, like plantation shutters, for example. When you’re looking for window coverings, you’re essentially choosing the style and even the fashion for your windows that will reflect your own personal style. So why go to a big box store and choose somewhat blindly from an aisle? Why choose fashion from a box? Let the experts at Budget Blinds bring their significant selection of blinds, curtains, shutters and window treatment options right into your home, and together, find the perfect solution to fit your needs.

Budget Blinds of Tarpon Springs also serves East Lake, Palm Harbor and Oldsmar, offering personal and attentive service as well as installation services. Their approach is 100% client-focused, and their intent is to help you design something that not only suits your home, but also suits your budget. Owner Roxana Rotaru says, “I love fashion, and it’s that love of fashion that inspired me to have a Budget Blinds franchise. To me, it’s window fashion, because with the right window covering, you don’t just cover the window, you change and improve your whole house.” What makes Budget Blinds unique is that Roxana brings the store to you. Instead of trying to choose something that will “work,” she personally helps you sort through the many materials, swatches, sizes, shapes and materials that Budget Blinds offers. Roxana says, “I like to say that the advantage we have is that we have quality products ranging in price

Tips for Choosing the Right Summer Camp Programs

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

For example, there may be swimming in the morning, arts and crafts after lunch, and sports or outside time in the afternoon. There may also be other activities such as horseback riding, gymnastics, creative writing and more. The new experiences of diverse summer camp programs are especially well suited to younger children who are exploring and developing their interests. Many of the summer camp programs at YMCA of the Suncoast offer variety. For example, Camp Muskogee in Clearwater is located on 53 acres of reserved land with a private lake. Camp programs like underwater robotics, drum making and paintball headline this camp. Consider Day or Sleep-Away: One of the biggest questions you may face is whether your child is ready for a sleep-away camp. Older elementary, middle-school and teen campers could enjoy a camp experience away from mom and dad. If you decide sleepaway camp is right for your child, make sure you find out how the camp handles issues such as homesickness, medications, illness and injury. It's also a good idea to talk with your children

It's a dreaded sound in summer: "Mom, I'm bored." And one of the main reasons you start looking for summer camps before spring has even sprung. But finding the right summer camp program for your children requires time and research. After all, you want your children to reap the potential benefits of summer camps—building self-reliance and new skills, making new friends, and of course, having fun. Here are a few tips from YMCA of the Suncoast to help you choose the best summer camp program for your kids. Explore Interests: Summer camp programs are a great way for children to explore areas of interest. Many summer camps focus on particular themes such as arts, sports, technology or popular culture. There are also academically focused and religious camps to choose from. At YMCA of the Suncoast, we offer summer camps dedicated to teen adventures, sports and music. We also offer a unique farm/ranch camp for children with special needs as well as a camp for children with autism. Target Variety: Some camps offer children a taste of everything.

about what homesickness is. Make sure they know that it's normal and that it will generally pass in a short time. Look into Financial Assistance: If finances are keeping you from signing your child up for camp, contact the camp directly and ask about financial assistance. Many camps provide scholarships to families in need. At YMCA of the Suncoast, we want to make sure all children can enjoy the summer, so we offer financial assistance to those who qualify. At YMCA of the Suncoast, we're ready to help your children explore a World of Adventure this summer. Contact us today to learn about our summer camp programs at ymcasuncoast.org.

East Lake Fire Rescue Offers CPR Training to the Public 2nd Wednesday, monthly, 6 PM–– East Lake Fire Rescue offers monthly CPR training to the public. Classes are held at 6 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at Station 57, 3375 Tarpon Lake Blvd. in Palm Harbor. Sign up by calling 727-784-8668, extension 201. CPR stands for Cardio

Pulmonary Resuscitation. Using a combination of chest compressions and rescue breathing, it can give a person who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped beating a greater chance of survival. More than eight out of every ten cardiac arrests occur at home. Effective CPR can double or triple a victim's chance of survival. East Lake Fire Commissioner Randy Burr, who assists in teaching CPR, says, “It’s unfortunate that with so many cardiac arrests occurring in homes, that CPR is given less than a third of the time. Our goal is to change that in our community.” Cost for the class is $25. East Lake Fire Rescue will also provide group training on request.

Choose Expressions Cosmetic & Family Dentistry Because Your Dental Health is Important! By Lenay Ruhl Cosmetic and family dentistry is taken to a whole new level when patients visit Dr. Lyndsay McCaslin at her family-friendly practice located on Ridgemoor Boulevard and convenient to patients in East Lake, Palm Harbor and Trinity. Walking into her waiting room, complete with a cozy fireplace, magazines and water, patients can sit down and immediately feel at home at Expressions Cosmetic & Family Dentistry. “We do treat everyone like family,” said Dr. McCaslin. Dr. McCaslin has a passion for dentistry and a love for her patients that drives her to continually advance her education and bring in new technology “to give our patients more efficient treatment,” said Dr. McCaslin. She is growing her practice by bringing in more equipment such as CEREC and VELscope. The CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology enables

14

Dr. McCaslin to perform ceramic restorations such as crowns and caps in one visit. It takes up less of the patient’s time and they often report a more comfortable treatment because of it. VELscope is the newest addition to Dr. McCaslin’s practice, and this is a preventive care measure, testing patients for oral cancer. With April being National Cancer Control Month and Dr. McCaslin having a personal interest in oral cancer, she focuses on educating her patients on the dangers and risks of oral cancer. After losing her mother to cancer this past year, Dr. McCaslin purchased the VELscope and had her entire staff trained on it. The VELscope shines a light into the patient’s mouth and detects abnormalities. She encourages everyone to receive an oral cancer screening when they get a cleaning, and only charges an additional $19 for the exam. Some insurance companies even cover this simple, two-minute screening.

Dr. McCaslin has made VELscope her priority because she wants to offer patients the “best care that we can give them by being preventive,” she said. In raising awareness of oral cancer she stresses the fact that it can affect people of any age, but it is most common in women in their midthirties. Although smoking and drinking is a common risk factor, what many people are unaware of is one of the number one risk factors; the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). HPV is known for its role in cervical cancer, but studies have found a growing increase in its connection to oral cancer. Dr. McCaslin explains that the tissue on the cervix and the tissue on your mouth are very similar. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, HPV is a sexually transmitted virus that infects about 40 million Americans today. She urges all women to protect themselves with the Gardasil shot as a preventive measure. HPV is spread through skin-on-skin sexual contact. There are over 100 dif-

Oral cancer is often silent, with very little warning signs. Sometimes symptoms include sores or lesions in the mouth, but they often mimic common canker sores and go unnoticed by the victim. The Oral Cancer Foundation recommends that if you have any sores in your mouth that do not heal within 14 days, you should have them looked at. Any numbness

One of her staff members explained that their doctor has “true compassion for our patients,” and they have a “good team that works well together.” With years of experience in dentistry all of the girls agreed that not a lot of offices are like that. “I’m blessed to have my team members,” said Dr. McCaslin. Along with oral cancer, Dr. McCaslin and her team also focus on general dentistry, proper cleaning and routine exams, with a strong emphasis on gum disease prevention. Dr. McCaslin uses the Picasso laser for gum disease treatment and also offers Atridox, which is a localized antibiotic gel that goes below the gum line. Along with treatment options, the team at Expressions Cosmetic & Family Dentistry educates patients on the importance of flossing and brushing twice a day. They always recommend using an electric toothbrush to ensure two minutes of brushing and more thorough cleaning. Dr. McCaslin also wants to make sure her dentistry is affordable. She offers patients a three-month payment plan for any treatments over $500. It is important to her that her patients have access to advanced, top dental care. “Dentistry is always evolving, and we have to evolve with it,” said Dr. McCaslin. “If we weren’t evolving, we would not be giving the best care.” Expressions Cosmetic & Family Dentistry is located at 4852 Ridgemoor Boulevard (just off of East Lake Road) in Palm Harbor and is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Allpro Tree and Landscaping Certified Arborist and Landscaping Professional By Katie Thomas Serving the Tampa Bay area with quality tree and landscaping services, Allpro Tree and Landscaping works to keep your commercial and residential sites looking fresh, trimmed and healthy. Whether you are in need of professional landscape design and installation, or safe tree service, Allpro has the skill, knowledge and experience to exceed your expectations and get your foliage looking fabulous! Allpro Tree and Landscaping services include landscape design and installation, tree-trimming and removal, rock beds and mulch, stump grinding, sod installation and removal and tractor work. Allpro uses a CAD program that actually shows you “after” pictures of your future landscape project. Pete Spiridis, owner and operator of Allpro Tree and Landscaping is a certified arborist. Pete believes that quality performance comes with working safe and smart, while utilizing the

right tools for each individual job. In order to keep up with today’s industry standards, Pete sends all team members at Allpro to regular safety and technique courses at the International Society of Arboriculture. Pete’s expectations for himself and his team are set with high standards and he strives for excellence in his work. “I started my business as a young kid right out of high school in 1997. I took over my dad’s lawn service and ran that for a number of years,” says Pete. “I thought I would like to go in a different direction, so I gave massage therapy a shot, but as I would watch maintenance crews at work outside my air-conditioned unit, I realized that I was kidding myself and my true passion was in outside, hands-on work. I shut down my massage business and purchased equipment the next day. I started mowing lawns again but also added trees and landscaping to my service and was very successful, maintaining over 400 weekly clients.”

As Pete’s business grew, he recognized early on that he wanted to do more for himself and his clients. “I wasn’t happy because I stand for something and I wasn’t reaching my full potential. My quality of life wasn’t what it should be and I let my stress take over, which in turn affected my personal life as a husband and my faith,” says Pete. “I knew that change was in order because God had bigger plans for me. In 2007, I opened up Allpro Tree and Landscaping to provide better, quality assured services. My wife and I came up with this name, Allpro, because to us it means that at we are who we say we are – All professionals, no more day laborers. You must know your area of expertise. We only focus on trees and landscaping, which sets us apart from others. I hold myself accountable to give true and honest meaning behind the name Allpro.” Pete adds, “I believe that in order to be the best, you need to gain as much knowledge in your field as possible. So in 2011, I earned the title Cer-

tified Arborist and with that title I maintain CEUs and also take the advantage of sending my team members to classes so they can be the best at what they do. I am only as good as my team, so I make sure they are the best.” Team members at Allpro Tree and Landscaping are always in recognizable uniforms, so you can know exactly who is working on the job! Fully licensed and insured, Allpro Tree and Landscaping is dedicated to providing clients with the best service possible in a way that doesn’t harm you, your yard or the trees they are working with. Pete takes every step to ensure that he and his team are the professionals who do it all and do it the best when it comes to tree and landscaping services. When hiring a tree and landscaping service, working with a certified arborist is the smart way to go. Improperly pruned trees are at risk for disease, which can lead to them having to be removed. The team cleaned up all debris and left our yard looking great!” Another satisfied client, Armand says, “Allpro owner Pete and his crew removed one large oak using a crane, removed three smaller trees and included stump grinding as part of their services. One of the oaks was overhanging over the garage roof and was raised and trimmed by the crew to open up space. My backyard oak was also trimmed. Pete prepped the yard for new sod and installed new St. Augustine sod after removing piles of block, brick and small trees. The sod provided was the best I have seen

after two re-sodding projects. All the work was completed in two days and cleaned up, including a freshly pressure washed driveway. Overall the work was excellent and professional. I will be using Allpro again!” The Allpro team can help you before and after big storms by helping you in finding dangerous limbs that may harm your home or even coming by after a storm to help you clean up. Pete is all about safety and works to protect you and your family from instances that could possibly be harmful. He takes precautionary measures and with Hurricane season right around the corner, it’s best to be preventative rather than reactive! Allpro is rated as a top professional tree and landscaping service throughout the Tampa Bay area. Christine says,

“The crew shows up on time, working quickly and efficiently to finish a job. I am very pleased with Allpro’s professionalism and service!” Whether you are in need of a specialized arborist’s opinion, landscaping design, clean-up services or tree/debris removal – Allpro’s pro attitude and services are the best you can get! Pete says, “When you have a tree to be trimmed, make sure the tree service you are hiring loves that tree as much as you do! Hire a certified arborist, not some doorknocker claiming to give you a deal. You will get the best with Allpro!” To contact Allpro Tree and Landscaping for an estimate, please call Pete at (813) 244-9234 or (727) 409-3315. All Children’s Outpatient Care Locations Bring Services Closer to Home The reach of All Children’s Hospital extends far past the main campus in downtown St. Petersburg. It embraces neighborhoods throughout the Tampa Bay region and beyond, with All Children’s Outpatient Care centers delivering a wide range of highly specialized services tailored to the communities they serve. Nine of these All Children’s Outpatient Care centers located throughout west central Florida bring pediatric services closer to home in familyfriendly facilities where all the staff are extensively trained in children’s unique health care needs. And parents soon realize that there is an extra benefit that’s part of the care package: a special, long-lasting bond that develops between nurses, staff, patients and families. “We’ve seen children who first came here as infants and we’ve provided care they need throughout the different stages of development, depending upon their needs,” says Phyllis Montali, Director for All Children’s

Outpatient Care in East Lake-Palm Harbor. “Whether it’s pediatric occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy or any number of other issues, we’ve been able to see them beginning even in infancy and then provide needed services and follow-up care for years to come.” “What I like about our All Children’s Outpatient Care locations is that they really connect us more closely to the community,” says Montali. “We’ve been here at East Lake for 17 years offering rehab services like OT, PT and speech. Two years ago we were fortunate to be able to expand our space, and we began providing visits with pediatric medical and surgical specialists, along with x-ray and ultrasound. It is really great for parents to have all of this close to home, plus staff members who get to know them so well they become almost like part of the family.” “We’re also able to take part in outreach efforts such as car seat safety inspections,” Montali adds. “We really

We see other children whose parents may have been told that they would never be able to speak, and they speak their first words at our center with our speech therapist. “We see children who ‘graduate’ from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at All Children’s and head home with a ‘button’ in their abdomen for special nutritional formulas. But now, thanks to services at our centers, they’re able to eat and drink well enough so that they can get all the nutrition they need on their own.” Wiggs-Stayner continues: “So many of our patients are able to start school after having therapy here – and at the age that’s appropriate with their peers. So it’s very exciting when you

see those things happen. A lot of our past patients will come back to visit at the holidays or send us pictures. They don’t need our services any more, but they love to tell us how well they’re doing. “And we love to hear that, too.” For more information, or to schedule an appointment, please contact one of our area All Children’s Outpatient Care locations: All Children’s Outpatient Care, Pasco is located at 4443 Rowan Road in New Port Richey; 727846-9900. Your Neighborhood Agrees… It’s Time Now in their eighth year, Trinity Custom Jewelers explains the formula for their success with an interview with your personal jeweler. “Our ad It’s Time You Had Your Own Personal Jeweler was created after hearing our customers say they didn’t know of a jeweler who did the work on the premises or created custom designs. I was surprised to hear that since I thought that’s what being a jeweler was. When I started in 1988, as a jeweler in New York City, that’s what we did, created jewelry. I have over 25 years of experience as a craftsman at the bench and behind the sales counter,” explains master jeweler, jewelry designer, and diamond setter, Michael Capozzoli. “When my wife Maryanna and I opened Trinity Jewelers in 2007 we made sure the workshop and design area was open to view for our customers to see their jewelry being repaired and created. What you’ll experience when you walk into Trinity Jewelers’ showroom is a family dedicated to helping you create oneof-a-kind jewelry that has specific meaning to you, not just a designer brand that someone else tells you to like. And now that the bead fad has fizzled out, our customers are realizing that beads on a bracelet are fun but not heirlooms.” “My equal and partner in the jewelry store is my wife Maryanna. She has just as many years in the jewelry business and also holds an MBA. Her business ex-

perience coupled with her fashion sense enables her to partner with other manufacturers and hand select beautiful jewelry that we are proud to inventory. From fashion to fine jewelry Maryanna has selected the most beautiful jewelry with prices starting at $19.95.” “So what does it take to have a piece of jewelry custom designed? The answer is simple. Just come see us. You can have a one-of-a-kind original creation made by Trinity Jewelers. Simply, just bring us an idea. We can create your next favorite piece of jewelry from just a picture or your simple sketch on a napkin. You can bring us your own gemstones and gold or we can supply what you’ll need. Your jewelry can be made using some of the oldest methods or manufacturing with some of the latest technologies in computer aided design with you at the controls and a master craftsman and designer at your side!” “Come in and experience what a master jeweler can do for you!” Trinity Jewelers is located at 9945 Trinity Blvd. Trinity, FL 34655 Store hours: Tuesday – Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday 11am – 5pm 727-376-2323 www.TrinityCustomJewelers.com

Dramatically Improving SAT, ACT, and AP Scores Dr. Wayne Adams has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, and Vanderbilt. He is one of the leading tutors in the country. Recently, I developed and began using a new approach for reading that has enabled my SAT, ACT, and AP tutoring students to increase their reading speed on these exams from 200 - 250 words per minute to around 1000 words a minute, with similar retention for test purposes. So far, in every case, their scores dram-atically improved for several reasons, as you will see shortly. In addition, this article briefly discusses what the changes in the SAT mean for your student in 2014 and 2015. For more information, call me at 727-253-0639 or E mail to wwa0811@gmail.com. For years, I have been thinking about how to help my students with their very slow reading. The average high school student reads around 250 words a minute according to national surveys. This is a tremendous handicap taking standardized tests with short time limits. About a month ago, I developed and started using a new reading technique which I now call Rapid Flow Assimilation Reading (RFAR). With an AP tutoring student,

30

who was really struggling after six months in an AP Language and Composition Class, I made the first try. His baseline results on the standard, 54 question, multiple choice part of the AP Exam was 30 questions answered, and 9 correct. After thirty minutes learning RFAR, he took a test of similar difficulty. He scored 41 correct, and finished ten minutes early. This meant he only had to write essays at a 6 of 9 level to score a 5 on the full exam. My

thought was, “Is this a fluke?” You be the judge with results from my next four students this month. Student A, whom I had already prepared for the SAT, improved her best ACT score in Reading from 24 to 30. Student B, only an ACT student, improved his reading score compared to his last ACT full exam by 10 points. Students C and D improved by 4 points over their prior “bests”. Using the same technique, Student A also improved his English score from an 18 on the last actual ACT exam to a 30. This was quite unexpected.

APRIL 2014

When I asked each student why they thought they had improved so much, their answers were essentially the same. Instead of taking 4 – 5 minutes to read a Reading passage, they took less than a minute. That meant they had 7 more minutes to find the answers - more than double what they had before. Correct answers went up, anxiety went down, and they had far more time to find

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

and to check their answers. Oh yes, each of the students now reads an 800 to 850 word passage on the exams in a minute or less. RFAR is also helping in their HS classes. So far, these results come from students with a 3.0 and higher GPAs who range from IB, AP, and honors, and regular classes. They all think in English as their primary language. Every one thought this would be “impossible” thirty minutes before they did it and said, “This is amazing.” Impact of SAT Changes Nothing for 2014 and 2015 because they will not begin until 2016. Dr. Wayne Adams began college teaching in 1968 at the University of Maryland. He completed his academic career as Dean of a Graduate

School of Business and Full Professor. His tutoring students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, University of Chicago, Notre Dame, NYU, Boston College, Northeastern, USC, UCLA, LSU, UF, USF, UCF, Stetson, U Miami, New College of Florida, service academies, and many other outstanding colleges and universities. Many have received academic, athletic, and music scholarships. Before RFAR, his students normally improved 200 - 300 points on the SAT super-score, and 4 - 7 points on the ACT composite. He also recently published How To Write College Application Esays Colleges Will Love, including over 40 examples of successful essays he wrote with students using his unique process.

East Lake High School Chorus is Visiting Normandy! Get Involved and Help these Students Embark on a Journey of a Lifetime By Katie Thomas The East Lake High School Chorus group has been actively working to raise funds for a trip to Normandy, France in order to commemorate the success of our Veteran’s D-Day landings of June 6, 1944. The 70-year anniversary celebrates those who have served in our military; students will be able to experience a once in a lifetime journey to celebrate one of the greatest generations of our time and the sacrifices made by WWII Veterans for the freedom we enjoy today. The group will fly into Paris, France on June 8th and stay until the 15th for a learning experience of a lifetime! Composed of 50 people (31 students and 19 adult chaperones) the total trip costs $163,000. Students have been working to raise the money since September! unforgettable piece of history. “As a music teacher in the school system for 34 years I’m concerned about how little history our young people know about this great country. This trip represents a chance for today’s young people to encounter the sacrifices of this country toward the war efforts in the 1940s. It is bringing a generation of Veterans in contact with my students in a way that makes history come alive,” says Robert Knable. “The WWII generation is passing into history at a rate of 1,000 per day and will soon be gone. This tour I’m doing comes from the same experience on the 50th anniversary of DDay in 1994. It changed my life and the lives of students to actually see where history took place! Now it is 20 years later and the men who made it ashore in the early morning hours June 6, 1944 are now in their 90s. I will not have this chance again, so I feel a sense of urgency to make this impact on these young people while there is still time.” How You Can Help: April is the last blitz of the fundraising journey that Robert Knable and the

machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe and security for ourselves in a free world.” If you are able, please help to send these students with our own hopes and prayers of liberty, to pass on the knowledge of an upstanding generation and the freedom we experience because of our heroes. “Mystic Fish” Continued from page 1 unique light fixtures allow for softer light around the whole dining area and bar, and the Italian fossil lined booths make dinner conversation private – perfect for date night! Whether you are starting your night off with a drink and small plate orders or you decide to have a full four-course meal, Mystic Fish is exceptional in pleasing patrons, even offering late-night dining with a reservation. Signature dishes at Mystic Fish are prepared with only the freshest, topquality ingredients and are likely to have your mouth watering before your first bite. Whether you are in the mood for the freshest seafood around or organically processed steaks, Mystic Fish promises to deliver you the best-of-thebest. Co-owner, Chef Doug Bebell and manager Richard Fuhrmann demand the very best for their diners. Richard says, “We won’t serve anything unless we can get it fresh. If grouper is out of season, we won‘t serve it because we know that no frozen piece of fish can compare to a fresh filet, straight from our local waters.”

Matt and Alexis Selby enjoy the ambiance at Mystic Fish - perfect for date night! And the food is always fantastic at the award winning seafood grill and bar known for its unique menu. Each time my friends and I visit Mystic Fish, we know that we will have an exquisite meal, superior drinks and an overall stellar experience! Recently, we have enjoyed their new $5 bar and high top specials that are offered from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. all week. Meeting up with friends at Mystic Fish’s bar is the perfect start to any night. Enjoy a fabulous martini, topshelf drink or a mellow glass of wine and dine on a few small plate items to get your night started right for a wonderful, exquisite and affordable evening! One of my favorite handcrafted drinks at Mystic Fish is the “Dew of the Sea” Lemonade that is

composed of Margaritaville tequila, lemon, lime, agave nectar and rosemary garnish – it is crisp and refreshing! Micro draft beers include Honkers Ale, Goose Island, Hoptical Illusion and Blue Point Brewery. Mystic Fish is not your average restaurant and bar, you can enjoy yourself without being overcrowded and everyone is friendly. One of my favorite entrées at Mystic Fish is the Panko Crusted Snapper, which is served on a soy beurre blank with wakami - this dish is absolutely perfect and Snapper is in season! If you are a boneless rib lover, you have got to sample the braised

boneless short ribs with a Madeira demi glaze served with mashed potatoes or rice, fresh vegetables and a choice of salad or mystic soup! Mystic Fish is currently offering raw cold water artisan oysters that are prepared with rice wine mignonette or brandy cocktail sauce - you have to give these succulent shellfish a try! If you like to finish your meal with something decadent and sweet, it will be hard to choose from the artfully prepared desserts on the Mystic Fish menu. My favorite is the fabulous Crème Brulee! Mystic Fish offers delicious new specials every day and has happy hour
