By Julie Kanehl If you have a child or know of a child who has been diagnosed with ADD, ADHD, dyslexia or one of the many types of autism, you are not alone. While the cause is still up for hot debate, Neurobehavioral/Developmental disorders like these are on the rise, and parents are desperate to find help for their children. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Road, is designed to help children who have been labeled with or who exhibit signs of ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Tourette’s, learning disabilities or processing disorders. As the statistics for such conditions have grown exponentially over the last two decades, many parents have been given very little hope that their children will ever be able to grow properly and learn to succeed. Brain Balance is a center dedicated to creating a place for children with these conditions, and is focused on individually helping them to succeed beyond the label, without medication, and with

proven results. The program is based on Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, who is a worldrenowned neurologist, professor and author, believes that all of these conditions, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called Functional Disconnection Syndrome. In his book, Disconnected Kids, he explains how these conditions all find a commonality in the way that the brain works, and while if you were to take a child with any of See “Brain Balance” on page 34.

Wheels of Success: “Working Wheels Keep Families Working” By Katie Thomas Wheels of Success, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization serving Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties, was created in June 2003 in order to help families obtain or continue work by providing them with reliable transportation. Their program of car repairs, vehicle replacement, related licensing services, car payments, down payments and car-care classes in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties has helped tons of families make better lives for themselves. In October 2003, National Car Care Month, Wheels of Success was able to award their first car to a Pinellas County individual in need. Wheels of Success is backed by many outstanding community sponsors and affiliates; all of whom deserve a round of applause for their gracious services.

Wheels of Success Provides to Local Community The organization obtains vehicles through donation or purchase and works with local community partners

in the automotive industry to get the vehicles in safe, running condition. Once the vehicles have been thoroughly checked to meet safety requirements, Wheels of Success then presents them to eligible families who are in need of safe, reliable transportation.

Wheels of Success Gets Involved Wheels of Success is comprised of caring, compassionate people within our communities and have specific programs within the overall program that address specific needs. These programs serve and include: Vehicles for Veterans (serving veterans returning to the workforce), Road to Independ-

ence (for domestic violence survivors), Cars for Caregivers (serving the 24/7 transportation needs of patient caregivers), and Wheels to the Future (for youths aging out of the foster care system, as well as other unaccompanied youths). With the help of local donors and volunteers, in the past nine years Wheels of Success has made it possible to provide 463 vehicles and an additional 469 car-related services to Tampa Bay area families, enabling them to get to work or school so that they are able to support themselves and their families. Wheels of Success gets the wheels rolling for participants

who are working towards paving a better road for themselves and their children.

How Wheels of Success Works Clients receiving a vehicle “buy” it from the program by making monthly payments based on their ability to pay, as well as donating five service hours per month to the organization. These payments enable Wheels of Success clients to make a difference and help Wheels of Success to keep rolling and serving others. Clients who receive a vehicle from Wheels are Success are soon able to arrive at work dependably, take their

children to school, shop for groceries, participate in community activities and provide resources that allow families to keep their lives from becoming overwhelming. Wheels of Success is an amazing organization that provides in-need families with dependable transportation in the form of a car, truck, or van, in addition to providing assistance with automotive repairs, preventative maintenance, and car-care classes for families who have transportation but cannot afford repairs and maintenance. Through the support of part-

ners in the automotive industry and caring contributors and volunteers within the community, Wheels of Success continues to help families pave the road to a better future. Wheels of Success accepts donations of vehicles in any condition— running or not. Free towing is provided, and donors receive the highest IRS tax deduction. For more information or to donate a vehicle, please contact Wheels of Success at (813) 610-0300 or www.wheelsofsuccess.org.

Art @ East Lake Three talented local photographers, Patti Krumeich, Sherry Williamson and Susan Knodle, will be displaying their photographic art for the month of May at the East Lake Community Library in Palm Harbor. A variety of themes and photographic techniques will be displayed. Sherry’s love of nature and travel are reflected in her work. She also enjoys creating regional and urban work extending throughout Florida. Her works include photographic prints on canvas media. Nature, wildlife and scenery are where Patti’s photographic passion revolves. She attempts to capture the “spirit” of her subjects and does so using digital painting methods. This gives her photos an artistic digital effect. Susan’s favorite type of photography is HDR, short for high dynamic range. This produces a

different “look and feel” and makes the colors vivid while accenting small details within a photo. All three photographers are members of local meet-up photography groups and two are members of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. They have displayed their art in local art galleries, libraries and community centers. Each of them has had their photos featured in an application for the iPad called “Puzzle Falls.” Stop by the library during the month of May to view the artwork. East Lake Library is located at 4125 East Lake Rd. in Palm Harbor. Ierna’s Heating and Cooling Donates $3,500 Heating and Cooling System Ierna’s Heating and Cooling donated a new heating and cooling system to the family of Nelida Bagley of Land O Lakes, Florida. This is truly an example of the community working together to help each other. Part of the donation came from the proceeds of the 2012 “Bring the Heat” Chili Cook Off family event, and the rest was donated directly

from Ierna’s to install the $3,500 home comfort system. The donation was intended to benefit a local family in need of a heating and cooling system for their home. Nelida Bagley applied for the “Bring the Heat” donation in a particularly heart wrenching situation. Nelida and her daughter Elizabeth moved from their home in New Hampshire to care for her son, Jose, who suffered a traumatic brain injury while serving in Iraq in March of 2004. The bomb that injured Jose left him 100% disabled. For the past three years Nelida has been renting a home and caring for her son full time. Her daughter has been earning an income to support the family. The family was finally able to purchase a home of their own this year, and Nelida wrote to Ierna’s with her wish to convert the garage into a gym for Jose’s rehabilitation therapies. The family needs a heating and cooling system so that the space can be an appropriate temperature for Jose and his therapists. Ierna’s Heating and Cooling is proud to be able to give back to the community, and happy to provide such a deserving family with

the HVAC system they need. “Jose is a true American Hero. His story, experience, determination and his unbelievable will to survive has moved me. I am wholeheartedly honored to assist Jose and his family,” Says Charlene Ierna, Vice President of Ierna’s Heating and Cooling. We wish Nelida, Elizabeth, and Jose the best of luck and hope their heating and cooling system will help bring them comfort and happiness in their new home for many years to come. With hurricane season rolling in, there will be a lot of tree-trimmers soliciting business and as with any type of work you have done on your home, you need to be careful to hire a reputable company that knows what trimming is healthy and what

trimming can ruin a tree. It is always important to remove decaying limbs, but aggressive trimming can be very harmful. “There is a false assumption that cleaning out trees will save them from hurricane winds,” warns Richard. “But you don’t want to over-prune your trees. With my company, there is no topping and no lion-tailing, which are the worst things you can do to a tree.” He explains that lion-tailing refers to the practice of stripping all of the smaller branches and leaves from a tree limb except for a small clump of greenery at the very end. “The thinking be-

hind lion-tailing is that the wind will go through the tree; where it has actually been proven through the ISA that a full, healthy tree actually dissipates the wind better.” Topping has always been considered harmful by arborists. George William Curtis, a writer from the mid-to-late 1800s, sums up how detrimental topping is. He wrote, “A tree which has lost its head will never recover it again, and will survive only as a monument of the ignorance and folly of its tormentor.” Soderlund Tree Service will never harm your trees! to remove a decaying tree or to cut one down to make room for a structure, you may be required by the county to replace your trees. Soderlund Tree Service provides replacement trees through suppliers that the company has long-standing relationships with. Richard urges prospective customers to do their homework. He says, “There is a wealth of information regarding tree care on the ISA website. People can educate themselves about their trees and see why it is so important to hire a certified arborist.” Dave D., who has used Soder-

lund Tree Service for both his home and his property management business, says, “I’ve used Richard Soderlund for years to do all of my palms at home and at the condominiums I manage. He is a good guy and has always treated me right.” To schedule your free consultation and estimate, please call Soderlund Tree Service (license #OCL-0011457) at (727) 6561366. Makes It Easy To Furnish Your Home By Julie Kanehl If you are one of the few who only know Badcock & More for the catchy jingle on its commercial, then you are missing out. This Floridabased company is well known throughout the Southeast for its quality furniture, appliances, electronics and, well, more. The “more” isn’t just part of the company’s name, it’s a philosophy. As a corporation, Badcock & More goes above-and-beyond to provide more in the way of the quality of its products, its customer service and its commitment to loyal customers. Badcock & More has been in business for more than 100 years, and began in nearby Mulberry, Florida, which is where its

warehouse still remains today. Since then, Badcock & More has expanded to employ 1200 employees and more than 300 privately owned retail stores in eight states. Don and Bobbe Jean Benson are proud owners of our local Badcock & More, which is at the Pasco Square Mall at the corner of S.R. 54 and Rowan Rd. across from McDonald’s. Don and Bobbe Jean, originally from upstate New York, had previously been in the recreational vehicle business, but when they came down to Florida they decided to try something new. “We bought our franchise in 1992,” said Don. “We were at 5158 U.S. Hwy. 19 in New Port Richey for almost 20 years, and then we moved over here to our new location in June of 2011.”

Badcock & More’s new 18,000sq.-ft. location is convenient to Trinity, East Lake, Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey, Port Richey, Holiday, and Lutz. The showroom, which looks small from the outside but is much, much larger than it appears, has an open floor plan that allows customers to really see all that the store has to offer. With styles ranging from traditional to modern and everything in between, Badcock stocks more than $450,000 worth of merchandise, and accepts two trucks a week of new furniture, mattresses, bedding and home accessories.

Married for 45 years, Don and Bobbe Jean know a thing or two about buying furniture that is just right for your home, whether you are newly married, adding to the family, or redecorating. A Therapy Like No Other at Quantum Leap Farm By Lynn Bankston How would you like to find a dynamic and fun way to heal and thrive? Hippotherapy – physical therapy with horses – is a fun, one-of-a-kind therapy for children and adults… and we’re not just horsing-around! At Quantum Leap Farm we have recently added Hippotherapy to our existing therapeutic riding and equine assisted self-exploration programs. Hippotherapy is a very dynamic and exciting therapy that utilizes traditional physical, occupational, and speech therapy treatment strategies. These are combined with a horse’s natural movement to create a program that achieves optimal, functional outcomes for every participant. We use horses to help people overcome physical challenges. In Hippotherapy, horses provide a dynamic base of support to stimulate trunk control and core strength, consistent and rhythmic stimulation, and sensory integration. Research shows that many therapies become more

beneficial when coupled with repetitive, patterned rhythms. A rider experiencing a horse’s gait at the walk or trot can enhance improvements in function aided by the horse’s natural rhythmic movement. This movement activates muscles, reflexes, and neuro networks involved in postural control, motor planning, walking, body awareness, sensory systems, and a variety of other factors involved in retraining and returning injured bodies to higher function.

The types of challenges we address here include orthopedic dysfunctions, neurological deficits, balance & vestibular issues, amputations, and general muscle weakness or deconditioning. We are working with children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, orthopedic issues, and many more conditions. The best part of Quantum Leap Farm’s Hippotherapy program is that it is fun. Clients who are coping with

rehab team (when applicable) and periodically reassess their progress in order to be certain we are reaching their goals. As Quantum Leap Farm’s Hippotherapy Director and Physical Therapist, I have had the opportunity to combine my equestrian background and knowledge with my manual therapy skills for the benefit of our clients. Our program is growing as we add more horses to our superb team, and as we host two Hippotherapy courses this year (see below for details). These courses will train therapists to implement Hippotherapy into their treatment strategies and how to begin a Hippotherapy business themselves. Our herd of horses includes big and small, narrow and wide, white to black and every color in between. They are all sweet, willing and careful.

They each have unique talents and offer individuals a very personal experience. Quantum Leap Farm horses are selected with great care and consideration for safety. Therapy horses have extensive training and all of them have wonderful personalities. We work with our horses carefully to maintain their health and interest in their therapeutic work. We also make sure that they get to relax and be outside—that they get to be horses everyday! We really enjoy what we do here at Quantum Leap Farm and invite you to call if you’d like to come for a visit. We are glad to answer your questions about any of the programs we offer. “Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 these conditions and give them an MRI Scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. The brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “leftbrained” or “right-brained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The results of Dr. Melillo’s program have been remarkable and have changed people’s lives. Since 1998, approximately 1,000 children have completed the program and have shown remarkable academic, emotional, behavioral, and social improvements. Brain Balance Really Works The Brain Balance Center of Oldsmar is owned by Executive Director Larry Polnicky, who had a successful career in the IT field until the search for help for his son’s severe autism brought him to a Brain Balance Center in Georgia. “We had tried everything for Ben,” says Polnicky, who still gets choked up when he talks about his son. “We were late to realize that our son was Autistic. We were spending $20,000 a year trying to find anything that would help him.” At five years old, Ben was still in diapers, was completely non-verbal, which meant he had never said a word,

34

and was still only able to eat baby food. Fatefully, the Polnickys happened to attend a Zac Brown concert, and partway through the music, Brown, who is the celebrity spokesperson for Brain Balance Achievement Centers, did a presentation about the benefits of the program. The Polnickys went to the closest Brain Balance Center, which was in Georgia, and even moved up there for a short time so that their son would be able to participate in the after-school program. “Within four weeks Ben was reaching for new kinds of food. We were thrilled,” says Polnicky. After 12 weeks in the program, which is typically one session, Ben was eating normally; after a second 12week program his temper-tantrums and some of his OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) behavior went away, and he took himself to the bathroom on his own. The Polnickys were so excited about their son’s progress. They didn’t know if he would ever be able to do these things, and within a matter months, he was progressing rapidly. Ben continued to make progress, expressing the sounds “ba” and “ma.” It was this success in Ben that made Polnicky decide to open a center in our area, so that kids with all manners of learning disabilities, from ADHD to autism and everything in between, could find help and support. At Brain Balance of Oldsmar, Ben is now on his way to talking. Jocelyn Kubus, who works with him at the center, says, “Ben is starting to make out words now, like purple and mama; it isn’t quite the word yet but it’s getting close. Once Brain Balance of Oldsmar came into being, the right people just seemed to come into place, and the staff at Brain Balance grew. Executive Director Larry Polnicky works closely with Center Director Laura Crumley and Assistant Director Heather Las-

cano to ensure that every child at Brain Balance of Oldsmar is given the help they deserve for continuous improvement. Prior to working as Center Director at Brain Balance, Laura Crumley practiced in Georgia as a licensed professional counselor for ten years working with adults and children. She says, “In my practice I saw numerous kids who were on several medications that were having very negative side effects. And although medication has its own place, I am excited to be part of a company that was able to move beyond a traditional model and help kids from a neurological standpoint.” Program Director Claire Hart comes to the center with a Doctorate in Teacher Education and Physical Education, as well as 37 years of teaching experience in Pinellas County. The rest of the capable and dedicated staff includes Lead Sensory Motor Coach Andrea Widoff, Certified Teacher Jessika Kubus and Assistant Academic Instructor Jocelynn Kubus. The Brain Balance Program Brain Balance is not a medical facility, and so it does not employ doctors, write prescriptions for medications, or accept insurance. In-

Larry Polnicky and his son Ben stead, Brain Balance is a facility that has a completely holistic approach to children who have neurobehavioral disorders. The staff at Brain Balance doesn’t really believe in labels. They do take all labels into consideration; however, they also believe that labels can create limitations for children, as well as their parents, who often blame themselves, or get so frustrated that they begin to give up. Hope is everywhere you look in this modern facility. Hope for each child that walks through those doors.

Upon being accepted into the Brain Balance program, each child is given an extensive assessment that gives the staff the opportunity to get a grasp on where each child’s strengths and weaknesses are, and to detect any deficiencies, and at what level they occur. The assessments that they use are well-known evaluation exams that have been used in schools across the country to help determine disabilities, but in this case, instead of trying to find a label for a child, they are trying to find a pattern that would indicate which part of the brain isn’t “connecting” properly. The Brain Balance program is tailor-made for each individual child and works with kids from the ages of 5-18. Each program generally consists of one or two 12-week after-school programs, where each child participates in a range of activities that help them to improve the connections between both hemispheres of their brains. There is a 1:1 teacher to child ratio at the Brain Balance Center, and while the kids are having fun and playing ball, balancing on a balance beam, and playing games on the state-of-the-art computer programs available at the facility, they are really making marked progress in their sensory and motor development, as

well as their academics. The idea is to help kids create a healthier body and brain function. Brain Balance incorporates programs and activities that have been proven to help kids who have these disorders, and they have them all at the facility so that each child has access to not just one or two, but hundreds. Studies show that many kids who have neurobehavioral disorders have poor immune systems, and that a poor diet may play a role in triggering problems as well. Therefore, nutrition is an important part of the Brain Balance program, and when they are accepted into the program, each child is given a complete nutritional work-up by Nutritionist Carole Farace that includes blood and urine analysis. This gives the nutritionist the opportunity to sit down with the child and the child’s family and discuss what their child’s body really needs. Instead of suggesting something generic like a multi-vitamin or one kind of vitamin that’s been known to work, they pride themselves on tailor-making a dietary plan for each child. All-in-all, the program customizes a program that incorporates physical, sensory, academic, behavioral and nutritional guidance to each child. Par-

ents are updated with progress reports every two weeks, and generally students have improved so dramatically after the first 12 weeks that an additional session is not necessary. Real Results At the conclusion of the 12-week program, another assessment is given, and their achievement is measured and shared with the family. In very severe cases, a second 12-week session will be recommended, but generally students are released after the first 12week session with dramatic improvement. Polnicky says, “In a study where 60 of the students had ADHD, 82% of those students were shown to no longer exhibit any signs of ADHD after one 12-week program.” He adds, “Two-thirds of the students improved by two grade levels, and onethird of the students actually improved by four grade levels; 100% had some improvement, and 0% had no improvement, so even if I didn’t know from personal experience that this program worked, we have the research to back us up.” The Brain Balance Mission The Brain Balance Mission State-

ment is “to make the Brain Balance Program available to as many children as possible, that each child may reach their greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.” In order to do this, education is key. The directors, coaches and founders of Brain Balance really want parents to understand that there is hope, that there can be success, and that their children have bright futures ahead of them regardless of labels or limitations. That is why each month Brain Balance offers free informative events for parents to come and learn about the details of the program and to see if it’s a right fit for their family. Guests who attend the free event are given a discount on the initial assessment. The next informative FREE parent events will be held on Saturday, May 12 at 10 AM and Saturday, June 2 at 10 a.m.; the event will last about one hour and reservations are needed, as seating is limited. Major SAT Increases Coming For Bright Futures Scholarships By Dr. Wayne Adams Recently, Bright Futures announced new SAT qualification requirements for the next two years for combined Math and Reading scores: Current 2013

This means that, within two years, about half of Florida students currently eligible for these awards will no longer qualify because of SAT scores. Today’s average score for a senior in Florida is about 1000 for the Math and Reading. The biggest impact will be in the 75% Scholarships, which jump the required levels from about 50th pecentile to 75th percentile of students taking the SAT exam nationally. In Florida and at other universities, the most recent data available

shows the following SAT admissions levels for these major universities for Math plus Reading: FLORIDA COLLEGES SAT Admissions Scores low/high 25% 75% UF 1140 1360 FSU 1110 1230 USF 1050 1260 UCF 1090 1270 U Miami 1170 1380 OTHER COLLEGES SAT Admissions Scores low/high 25% 75% Harvard 1380 1570 Yale 1400 1580 Cornell 1290 1500 MIT 1340 1540 Vanderbilt 1340 1530 Naval Acad 1160 1380 West Point 1140 1330 Source: 2011 admissions data

Tightening requirements for admissions and scholarships Last year, UF admitted about 40% of applicants in its freshman

class of about 5,000. After excluding the 1500 admissions from International Bacca-laureate programs, this means about 3500 slots are available for non IB students, or about 28% of other appli-cants. For most high school graduates, going to UF actually requires an SAT score in the 1350 range. At the same time, tuition and other college costs are projected to keep rising, even at public universities where legislative action is cutting funding to higher education. More important than ever to score well on the SAT (and ACT) Fewer Bright Futures Scholarships, tighter admissions require-

ments, and rising costs make it critical for our high school students to score well on their SAT (and ACT) exams. This is especially true for those students who must have scholarships to attend the college of their choice, either in Florida or out of our state. My wife and I faced these same situations with our son and daughter not long ago. Our son went to Rhodes and UF law, and is now an attorney in Washington DC. Our daughter graduated from Yale and Columbia, and is an international banker overseas. The keys for all students are plan-ning, preparation, and maximizing strengths for scoring, appli-

cations, and being ready for their freshman year. The challenge today My experience has found that today’s students need to dramatically improve because of these findings from my baseline tests in many, many classes. - Averaging 7 vocabulary words correct out of 25 key SAT words. - Averaging 40 grammar sentences correct out of 80 on my initial exam. - Averaging 2.5 out of a possible 6.0 on the SAT essay because they have difficulty taking and defending a thesis. - Inability to think critically. - Seldom scoring over 450 on either their Writing, Reading, or Math sections of the SAT baseline testing that I do. Yet most of my students have GPA’s in the 3.50 to 4.25 range, are taking one or more AP classes, and have a high class standing. Accelerating Learning While no solution guarantees success, I have found four ways to help students greatly accelerate their

learning because of two key factors: (1) Motivation to do their best (2) New approaches to learning

my book they have scored a “perfect” if they understand this concept.

The first way that has proven very effective is defining “good teaching” as “good learning”. The rest is preparation. This leads naturally to having the students understand who the teacher is. I am their guide, mentor, person who structures their learning, motivator - but I am not their teacher. One of the important “life lessons” they learn is that ... in life ... they will be both their teacher and the student. The third way is for my students to understand that real learning does not come from hearing lectures. It comes from doing, taking tests, understanding why they got a question correct or missed it, and learning through the process how to improve. Most are shocked when they receive their first test about ten minutes after our first class begins. Finally, the fourth way is for students to understand real competition. Real competition is saying, “I have done my best.” No matter what the outside score may be, in

Maximizing Student Strengths Every student must “sell themselves” to college admissions officers and “stand out” from the other applicants. The first place to stand out is with application essay(s). Students need to write in a “Hook, Look, Took” format. If you were an admissions officer, would this opening get your attention?
