Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo PACK Provides Summer Camp for Kids with Disabilities The Pasco Association of Challenged Kids (PACK), now in its 15th year, is the only summer program in Pasco County that takes children with ALL types of disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and other severe physical and mental afflictions. PACK is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 by Paula and Barry Cohen, parents of an autistic child, with the help of Florida State Senator Mike Fasano, the Center for Independence and Florida Representative John Legg. The first camp held at the Center for Independence in 1997 served about 18 children with various disabilities. Each year, the organization has grown and last year, 40 children took part in a three-week summer camp program at Redeemer Community Church in New Port Richey. This year, PACK will set up camp

4

from July 9 to July 27 at the Genesis school’s west campus at 6609 River Rd. in New Port Richey, free of charge. “We’re always focused on trying to make a difference in the lives of kids,” says Melissa Nurrenbrock, head of Genesis School. “That’s something we can do to be helpful. We’re thrilled to be able to help.” The Cohens were equally thrilled when they met Nurrenbrock to finalize the arrangements. “PACK always has paid rent, but Nurrenbrock insisted upon waiving any fee,” Barry Cohen said. Parents pay a small registration and supply fee. PACK is funded primarily from private donations, fundraisers, and with some help from the state legislature. A dinner at Sweet Tomatoes in Port Richey and a bowl-a-thon at Lane Glo in New Port Richey in April has helped with expenses. Parents can enroll their children and be confident in the knowledge

that, for three weeks, kids will have the opportunity to learn, socialize and have fun while being cared for by qualified staff with highly specialized training. According to Greg Giordano, legislative aide to Senator Fasano, funding for 40 children costs about $35,000. “The reason for that is that they have a very high staffing ratio, they hire paraprofessionals from the school system and people that are trained at working with children with disabilities. Some of the kids are wheelchair bound, some have behavioral issues, that’s where the cost really comes in – it’s the staffing.” For more information, or if you can help by making a donation, please contact P.A.C.K. at (727) 3729516. The group’s website is www.pascopack.org. West Pasco Young Professionals Bowl for Charity The West Pasco Young Professionals Group (YPG) participated in its 3rd Annual Chasco Fiesta Bowling Tournament on March 27 at Lane Glo Lanes on Old C.R. 54. More than $4,780 was raised by the 42 teams who participated. The group raised the money through selling out

in bowling teams, a Chinese Auction and a 50/50 raffle. The event benefits the Young Professionals group charities, Leadership Pasco scholarships and the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce. Taking the 1st place trophy was Team National Pools; Team Maaco took 2nd place; and 3rd place went to Team Meares Plumbing. Best overall bowlers were: 1st place – Steve Hoskins, team Macco; 2nd Place – Dave Schuller, team National Pools; and 3rd Place – Bob Morrison, Team Trinity Business Association. There was also a contest for Best Costume Theme. Cadence Bank took the prize with their theme. Doug Doran of Cadence Bank says, “The idea of our theme for the Chasco Bowling Tournament came from getting the public to recognize our bank and who we are. Through attending various charity and networking events we introduce ourselves and Cadence Bank, yet people always had a curious look on their faces and would ask… ‘Cadence Bank?’ So we would reply with ‘Yes, I’m with Doug Doran’ and they would excitedly confirm and show recognition with, ‘Ohh Doug.’

Therefore, we created t-shirts with Doug’s photo on the front for Amber, Jamie, and Leah to wear. The back of the shirt states, ‘I am with Doug.’ For Doug, he wore a t-shirt with Amber, Jamie and Leah on the front, and the back of his shirt simply read ‘Doug.’ It was a great way to show our support for one another and let everyone know that we are Cadence Bank.” Cadence is a regional bank with a network of more than 100 locations in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. Cadence Bank and Superior Bank, located at the corner of Little Rd. and C.R. 54, merged operations on November 11, 2011. The investment departments of both Cadence and Superior completed their consolidation at the end of the first quarter of 2012. The YPG – those who are “Young in Age, Young in Business and Young at Heart” meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Fox Hollow Country Club in Trinity for networking and a guest presentation; they also host a variety of socials throughout the year. Connections Job Development Program Holds 20th Anniversary Birthday Bash By Diane Galemmo Celebrating its 20th year of service to area residents, Connections Job Development program put on a birthday bash, along with its fourth annual fundraiser and social. The event was held on Sat., Apr. 21 at the Quality Inn and Suites in New Port Richey from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Connections is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 by Medical Mission Sister Joan Foley. The agency's goal is to help residents find work. All services to clients and businesses are free and all proceeds from their events benefit Connections. The 2012 annual fundraiser exceeded all expectations by grossing $11,000 to support Connections' philanthropic work. Since its humble beginnings— when Sr. Joan worked out of her beatup Datsun sedan, then "upgraded" to an abandoned building and, finally, due to a grant from Pasco County, to an office at 5841 Main St. in New Port Richey—Connections has gone on to provide the unemployed and the

10

underemployed with a wealth of free services designed to help them find work. Sister Joan served for 16 years as a medical missionary sister in Pakistan and Bangladesh. She once led the Homeless Coalition of Pasco County and she established the St. Vincent de Paul Resource Center in Port Richey – a place where the homeless or those at risk for homelessness can go for help. Twenty years ago, I was one of Sister Joan's first clients (in their new offices) and was impressed by her kindness, enthusiasm, and her devotion to helping those in need, especially the homeless, whose numbers, she says, are still on the rise. Her vision continues today as Connections remains committed to its work with job seekers and employers. Now retired from Connections since 2008, but still active at 80, Sr. Joan traveled from her home in Philadelphia to attend the birthday bash. But one can hardly call Sister Joan retired. She now runs the thrift shop for the Medical Mission sisters at their U.S. headquarters in Philadelphia

and is on the Connections Board of Directors. About 150 guests were present at the fundraiser; among them Pasco County Commissioner Ann Hildebrand and State Senator Mike Fasano. sions of You in Palm Harbor. Connections gratefully thanks all of its sponsors and donors for their commitment to Connections' mission. For the past twenty years Connections has offered job search strategies, computer training, resume assistance, interviewing workshops and job leads to unemployed individuals. The agency helps more than 1,000 job seekers each year with personalized assistance to give them the skills they need to connect with employers. It teaches job seekers to uncover their own unique talents and abilities so they achieve self sufficiency. Last year alone, 1,200 clients walked through its doors, 673 of whom were newcomers. According to Connections' Director Sheila Krautner, “During the beginning 3 1/2 months of this year, 85-90 people, that we know of, got jobs.” Aside from the annual fundraiser, support for Connections also comes from the United Way of Pasco County, (its largest source of funding) grants, proceeds from the thrift shop and donations from individuals, businesses, clubs and churches. With the governor slashing its state funding, help from other sources is imperative to keeping Connections solvent.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

“We are proud of our 20-year legacy in the greater Pasco community,” says Krautner, who came out of retirement in Oct. 2011 to serve as Connections' Director, despite economic uncertainty, because of her respect for Sr. Joan. Krautner had previously worked with Sr. Joan as an employment counselor and has remained a volunteer board member. “For every one person finding employment, we know that two others, usually children, benefit,” she says. Connections is located at 5841 Main St., between Grand Blvd. and Madison St., in New Port Richey; phone: (727) 849-4724. The agency also manages the Good Connections Thrift Shoppe, run by Mike Davis, at 6634 US 19 N in the Davis Plaza; phone: (727) 8417108. The Shoppe offers free clothing to Connections clients who are going on job interviews. The Shoppe has bargains on clothing, household items, antiques, books and furniture. Note that volunteers are always needed at Connections, at the thrift shop and at the resource center. Visit www.connectionsjobdevelopment.org for more information.

You’ll Flip Over Suncoast Gymnastics Academy! By Dara Tucker Suncoast Gymnastics Academy, owned by Arnold and Cindy Gwinn, has been an important part of keeping the New Port Richey area kids active for more than 25 years. It all started when Arnold and Cindy met while they were attending college, earning their education degrees on gymnastics scholarships. After college, Arnold was hired at Suncoast Gymnastics Academy. The couple not only fell in love with each other, but also the community and the business, which they later purchased. With over 25 years experience, numerous regional and national champions, and with another student—their 10th!—recently winning a full gymnastics scholarship to college, Suncoast Gymnastics Academy is thriving. Cindy attributes their success to a qualified staff, an emphasis on safety and the latest training/techniques in the industry. “Annual CPR /First Aid and educational training are required for all of

our staff,” explains Cindy. “Everyone is a past gymnast themselves so when we come back from National Clinics or the Olympic Trials (in San Jose, California), we are excited to put what we learn into practice at our own facility. We know that there is more than one way to teach the same skill. We teach different ways so our students will be successful. We invest in the latest new equipment that is stimulating for students from 16 months to competitive gymnasts.” When you step into Suncoast Gymnastics Academy you see activity and the stimulation Cindy and Arnold have worked hard to create. Both boys and girls are excited as they wait for their coach to call for their class to begin. Once class starts you can see the excitement turn to an individual, goal-setting focus – whether it’s the preschooler who can’t wait for his turn to jump across the trampoline and practice his “safety finish,” or a teenager trying something new on the parallel bars – they

Ayden’s proud mom, Heather Anderson, says, “When Ayden was interested in starting gymnastics we heard great things from other parents in the community about Suncoast [Gymnastics Academy]. Ayden enjoyed it right away, and keeps advancing with the leadership of her coaches.” Suncoast Gymnastics Academy’s original building, located at 8004 Congress St. in Port Richey, has a pro-

As part of its equipment, it also has a pit where gymnasts can practice with a soft landing. A second location, at 2510 Merchant Ave. in Odessa, has been open for two years. The Odessa/Trinity location has a rock wall and rope ladder in addition to the latest gymnastics equipment. New Location Opening – Double the Size and Double the Fun With the success of the two facilities, Arnold and Cindy Gwinn were on the search for an even larger new facility that would allow their business to expand and offer more services than ever before. The two locations will merge the best of both the Odessa and

Port Richey locations into one 22,500-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art training facility. The new facility is scheduled to open in September and will be located at 11131 Cargo Ct. in Odessa/Trinity, behind Trinity Tile and Stone. The transformation of the new location can be viewed on the Suncoast Gymnastic Academy’s website www.SuncoastGymnastics.com. Summer Camps The Odessa/Trinity location will offer a preschool camp for three- and four-year-olds (called Summer Sault) and a day camp for ages five – thirteen. The preschool camp runs select Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. – noon, and has the themes Adventures in Outer Space, Pirates and Princesses, and Bugged Out. The day camp runs Monday – Friday all summer long, with varying themes each week. Half-day, full-day, extended care and day-to-day drop-off provides parents flexibility when choosing the camp that’s best for their child. The Port Richey site will be offering a teen camp this summer. The goal of all of the camps is to keep kids active – and with Florida’s sweltering summers, Suncoast Gymnastic Academy’s indoor

air conditioned facilities are a great way to do it. Shannon Engelke, a former nationally ranked gymnast and certified teacher, runs the preschool camps. Shannon explains, “The camps are a great way for children to use their imagination and creativity in an active setting. For each session they make crafts, play games and do gymnastics that all relate to the theme. During Bugged Out for example, students will go on a pretend bug scavenger hunt, giggling as they collect toy bugs from different parts of the gym. We have a great time!” Suncoast Gymnastics Academy is committed to keeping kids in the community active. Whether it’s through gymnastics, cheer, summer camps or birthday parties, they know how to keep kids moving in a fun and safe environment. Suncoast Gymnastics Academy is located at 8004 Congress St. in Port Richey and at 2510 Merchant Ave. in Odessa. Welcome to The Brass Tap – Your Friendly Neighborhood Bar! By Kim Thomas Trinity has a great new venue for a cold brew and a great time. Since it’s opening on March 5, The Brass Tap, located on S.R. 54 in Trinity Village Center, is fast becoming the favorite new place to enjoy a craft beer, listen to great music and enjoy socializing with your friends. Started by three partners, Trinity is the newest location of The Brass Tap, which also has locations at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel and at Brandon Town Center. The friendly, neighborhood atmosphere, daily specials, live music and unique events are making The Brass Tap wildly popular, and the beer bar has plans to tap more locations – “Tapping Soon” in Orlando, South Tampa and Carrollwood. “We want to be your neighborhood bar,” says manager Jessica Buchta. “We have a great selection with 60 beers on tap and 300 different bottled beers. We want to be able to share craft brewing knowledge with the community and just give people a nice little upscale watering hole.”

Jessica has worked at all three Brass Tap locations. She says, “I was fortunate to meet Jeff [one of the owners] and start working at his Beef O’ Brady’s in Wesley Chapel. I eventually got a job at The Brass Tap in Wiregrass and worked my way up. I went to Brandon to help out when they opened there and then I was given the opportunity to manage here. I love it! It’s a great organization to work for with good people – good people run it and good people work here.” The Brass Tap is very spacious with a splendid wood bar that I’d estimate to be at least 60-feet-long, with comfortable bar stools that encourage patrons to belly-up to the bar and try one of the unique varieties of beer. The Brass Tap also has a nice selection of wine and its humidor is stocked with aromatic and tasteful cigars. Beer and cigar aficionados alike will love the selection at The Brass Tap. Smoking isn’t allowed inside the bar, but there is a spacious front patio with plenty of seating where you can still enjoy the music and atmosphere of The Brass

Parveen S. Vahora, M.D. is Committed to Offering Innovative Solutions for all Women By Julie Kanehl Ladies, if you are looking for an experienced Gynecologist who will take the time to really listen to you and help you find solutions to your most personal health concerns, then you need to make an appointment with Parveen S. Vahora, M.D. In addition to being a specialist in Minimally Invasive Procedures such as the Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Dr. Vahora is committed to helping each woman find the right solution to their health concerns. “I really listen to my patients,” says Dr. Vahora. “I believe in hearing what they have to say and I believe in taking my patients seriously.” Conveniently located off of State Road 54 in New Port Richey, Dr. Vahora’s office is just minutes from Lutz, Holiday and Trinity. Whether you are looking for basic gynecological care or you are looking for a specialist experienced in the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy or Myomectomy procedure, Dr. Vahora is a highly qualified medical professional who is both Board Certified and Fellowship Trained. Women are treated with a great deal of respect at Dr. Vahora’s office. In fact, instead of paper gowns that rip and tear in revealing ways, patients are given real bath robes to wear during their visit, and dark chocolate to enjoy while they wait. It is Not Your Grandmother’s Hysterectomy™ Dr. Parveen S. Vahora completed her Fellowship in Laparoscopy and

She earned her Bachelor of Arts at Rosemont College and her Doctorate of Medicine at Drexel University. A member of many professional organizations including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and The American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists, just to name a few. Dr. Vahora can often be found educating other doctors as well as her patients in the advancements of gynecological care. According to Dr. Vahora, many women who have heavy bleeding or are having irregular bleeding need to come in and be checked. Choosing to focus on gynecological care instead of including obstetrics in her practice was a conscious decision for Dr. Vahora. “My passion is to educate women on their healthcare choices.”

Dr. Vahora is truly a specialist in performing Laparoscopic Hysterectomies, performing between two and five of them a week. “The key is that I’m doing laparoscopy day in and day out. This is what my passion is,” says Dr. Vahora, adding, “I like to do surgery, but I won’t do surgery unnecessarily. As always, surgery should be a last resort.” While some procedures can be done in the office, Dr. Vahora performs the majority of her surgeries at the Medical Center of Trinity, including the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy. She also performs surgeries at the New Port Richey Surgery Center on Gulf Drive. The difference between the traditional method of hysterectomy and the laparoscopic method is the difference between a very large incision and a few smaller ones; it’s the difference between a long recovery and a quick one. If you need a hysterectomy, and many women do, the difference is night and day, which is why Dr. Vahora coined the phrase about it not being your grandmother’s hysterectomy. Laparoscopic surgery allows Dr. Vahora to do what once could only be done as a major abdominal surgery, as a minimally invasive procedure, which shortens recovery time and gets women back to their regular activities as soon as possible. take their pain medicine,” says Dr. Vahora, “and most of them go home the same day.” In addition to the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy, Dr. Vahora also performs the da Vinci® Robotic Assisted Myoectomy (which removes uterine fibroids through smaller incisions with precision and control), Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Laparoscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy, as well as Hysteroscopic Sterilization, Endometrial Ablation, and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction. Dr. Vahora says, “I provide a more personalized experience for women by listening to their complaints and issues. My goal is to solve them.” Many women have other gynecological issues that don’t require surgery, but can be treated with medication, such as hormone therapy, including Bio-identical hormones. Bio-Identical hormones are the same hormones that your body makes, and when a patient is suffering, these kinds of hormones can be a real relief. Dr. Vahora explains, “I do a lot of compounding, which is when you work with a pharmacist to create a specialized medicine that is compatible with each of my patients. We are tailoring each medication plan for each patient.” Some painful conditions, like Vulvodynia and Interstitial Cystitis are issues that many doctors don’t specialize in. Dr. Vahora does, so sometimes she will see patients who drive from many hours away so that they can receive her care. In addition to educating her patients on their options, Dr. Vahora of-

She is knowledgeable and experienced, and takes the time that is necessary to make her patients feel comfortable and well-cared for. When local resident Theresa Broughton needed surgery, she went to her doctors and asked them about the da Vinci® Robotic Surgeries that she knew was available at the new Medical Center of Trinity. “The other doctors that I went to said that they couldn't do what I needed. Dr. Vahora is truly a specialist in this area.” She says, “When I went into the hospital, I knew exactly what to expect because she was so thorough. Nancy Poole, A.R.N.P. recently joined Dr. Vahora’s practice and has been a great asset to the team. Dr. Vahora’s patients can look forward to a larger practice in the near future, as Dr. Vahora is considering moving closer to the Trinity area. If you are interested in learning more about the advancements available in regard to surgeries like laparoscopic surgeries, Dr. Vahora is offering an educational seminar on “Robotics in Women’s Health for Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery” this month. Major SAT Increases Coming For Bright Futures Scholarships By Dr. Wayne Adams Recently, Bright Futures announced new SAT qualification requirements for the next two years for combined Math and Reading scores: Current 2013

This means that, within two years, about half of Florida students currently eligible for these awards will no longer qualify because of SAT scores. Today’s average score for a senior in Florida is about 1000 for the Math and Reading. The biggest impact will be in the 75% Scholarships, which jump the required levels from about 50th pecentile to 75th percentile of students taking the SAT exam nationally. In Florida and at other universities, the most recent data available

For most high school graduates, going to UF actually requires an SAT score in the 1350 range. This is especially true for those students who must have scholarships to attend the college of their choice, either in Florida or out of our state. My wife and I faced these same situations with our son and daughter not long ago. Our son went to Rhodes and UF law, and is now an attorney in Washington DC. Our daughter graduated from Yale and Columbia, and is an international banker overseas. The keys for all students are plan-ning, preparation, and maximizing strengths for scoring, appli-

cations, and being ready for their freshman year. The challenge today My experience has found that today’s students need to dramatically improve because of these findings from my baseline tests in many, many classes. - Averaging 7 vocabulary words correct out of 25 key SAT words. - Averaging 40 grammar sentences correct out of 80 on my initial exam. - Averaging 2.5 out of a possible 6.0 on the SAT essay because they have difficulty taking and defending a thesis. - Inability to think critically. - Seldom scoring over 450 on either their Writing, Reading, or Math sections of the SAT baseline testing that I do. Yet most of my students have GPA’s in the 3.50 to 4.25 range, are taking one or more AP classes, and have a high class standing. Accelerating Learning While no solution guarantees success, I have found four ways to help students greatly accelerate their

learning because of two key factors: (1) Motivation to do their best (2) New approaches to learning

my book they have scored a “perfect” if they understand this concept.

The first way that has proven very effective is defining “good teaching” as “good learning”. The rest is preparation. This leads naturally to having the students understand who the teacher is. I am their guide, mentor, person who structures their learning, motivator - but I am not their teacher. One of the important “life lessons” they learn is that ... in life ... they will be both their teacher and the student. The third way is for my students to understand that real learning does not come from hearing lectures. It comes from doing, taking tests, understanding why they got a question correct or missed it, and learning through the process how to improve. Most are shocked when they receive their first test about ten minutes after our first class begins. Finally, the fourth way is for students to understand real competition. Real competition is saying, “I have done my best.” No matter what the outside score may be, in

Maximizing Student Strengths Every student must “sell themselves” to college admissions officers and “stand out” from the other applicants. The first place to stand out is with application essay(s). Students need to write in a “Hook, Look, Took” format. If you were an admissions officer, would this opening get your attention?

Dr. Wayne Adams, is one of the top Tutors in Tampa Bay. He has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia Int’l, and Luther Rice. Ceremony Honoring Missing Man Held at Medical Center of Trinity By Diane Galemmo A Missing Man Dedication Ceremony was held on April 24 at the new Medical Center of Trinity. This poignant ceremony is symbolic of the Americans still missing from each of the five services – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard – and civilians. The purpose of the ceremony is twofold—to acknowledge the inability of our missing to be with us in the celebrations we hold because they have been left behind, and to honor their sacrifice to our country. In the hospital's dining area stands a lone table beautifully set for dinner. On it are six complete place settings, a red rose in a vase centerpiece, and a Bible. The table is reserved for our missing loved ones, and it symbolizes that they are here with us in spirit. It serves to remind us that our troops are in harm's way every day and we should never forget these brave men and women who heeded the call to service. A memorial tablet on a

tripod near the table reads: “The table is round to show our everlasting concern for our missing men. The tablecloth is white symbolizing the purity of the soldiers' motives when answering the call to duty. The single red rose, displayed in a (R) Medical Center of Trinity CEO vase, reminds us of Leigh Massengill stands with the the life of each of the Honor Guard at Ceremony missing and their loved ones and friends of these Americans who keep missing and their families who seek anthe faith, awaiting answers. Guard silently entering the room to the muted strains of "When the Caissons Go Rolling Along" in the background. The audience was then bid to stand for the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silent prayer. The Honor Guard then moved into position around the dining table placing the covers (caps) of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and a civilian cap on the dinner plate at each place setting. Next, we sat stunned and sad-

dened, listening to the Missing Man Roll Call. In a duologue between a Leader (on stage) and a Responder (at the rear of the crowd), the Leader announces, “I am about to conduct a roll call of U.S. Military Personnel.” He then asks the Responder, “If any fail to respond will you vouch for their whereabouts?” “Yes, Sir,” replies the Responder. In all cases, for all Military Personnel, the Responder replies, “Not present, Sir. Missing in action, Sir.” The Responder then lists the missing. The numbers are staggering. “In World War I, 3,344 (1918) soldiers were last seen in Europe, mostly in Germany and France. In World War II, 73,690 were last seen in Europe, Asia, North Africa, the Pacific, the Atlantic, and on virtually every continent and ocean in the world. In the Korean War, 7,958 were last seen in 1953, mostly on the peninsula of South Korea. In the Vietnam War, 1,666 were last seen prior to Operation Homecoming in 1973 in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand and the South China Sea. However, many have been reported seen alive in captivity since then, Sir. There were 126 Cold War personnel last seen sometime between

the end of World War II in 1945, and the end of the Cold War in 1989, when the Berlin wall was torn down.” “Sir,” the Responder concludes, “We are at war with a ruthless enemy who hates our freedoms and the American way of life. They scoff at the Geneva Convention that was meant to protect all military personnel, both friend and foe, should they ever become captured.” The Leader then addresses ALL Americans: “Let us all find the resolve to bring these American heroes home, no matter what it takes. Those who defend the United States of America should not be left in the hands of our enemies or ever be forgotten. We live and get the most out of life for those who gave up their good days for our freedoms. We live on to honor their memory, and fight those who would let them be forgotten, so the families of the missing may someday find peace. God bless our service men and women and God bless the United States of America. They are not forgotten!” Many local veterans were present at this stirring ceremony as were the Mitchell High School NJROTC; Paul Rizzo, senior chief of the Navy

Seabees and Moe Moyer, State Director of Rolling Thunder, an organization whose mission is to educate the public that many American POW's were left behind after all previous wars, to help correct the past, and to protect future Veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners of War or Missing In Action. Their program of car repairs, vehicle replacement, related licensing services, car payments, down payments and car-care classes in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties has helped tons of families make better lives for themselves. In October 2003, National Car Care Month, Wheels of Success was able to award their first car to a Pinellas County individual in need. Wheels of Success is backed by many outstanding community sponsors and affiliates; all of whom deserve a round of applause for their gracious services.

Wheels of Success Provides to Local Community The organization obtains vehicles through donation or purchase and works with local community partners

With the help of local donors and volunteers, in the past nine years Wheels of Success has made it possible to provide 463 vehicles and an additional 469 car-related services to Tampa Bay area families, enabling them to get to work or school so that they are able to support themselves and their families. Wheels of Success gets the wheels rolling for participants

who are working towards paving a better road for themselves and their children.

A Therapy Like No Other at Quantum Leap Farm By Lynn Bankston How would you like to find a dynamic and fun way to heal and thrive? Hippotherapy – physical therapy with horses – is a fun, one-of-a-kind therapy for children and adults… and we’re not just horsing-around! At Quantum Leap Farm we have recently added Hippotherapy to our existing therapeutic riding and equine assisted self-exploration programs. Hippotherapy is a very dynamic and exciting therapy that utilizes traditional physical, occupational, and speech therapy treatment strategies. These are combined with a horse’s natural movement to create a program that achieves optimal, functional outcomes for every participant. We use horses to help people overcome physical challenges. In Hippotherapy, horses provide a dynamic base of support to stimulate trunk control and core strength, consistent and rhythmic stimulation, and sensory integration. Research shows that many therapies become more

beneficial when coupled with repetitive, patterned rhythms. A rider experiencing a horse’s gait at the walk or trot can enhance improvements in function aided by the horse’s natural rhythmic movement. This movement activates muscles, reflexes, and neuro networks involved in postural control, motor planning, walking, body awareness, sensory systems, and a variety of other factors involved in retraining and returning injured bodies to higher function.

The types of challenges we address here include orthopedic dysfunctions, neurological deficits, balance & vestibular issues, amputations, and general muscle weakness or deconditioning. We are working with children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, orthopedic issues, and many more conditions. The best part of Quantum Leap Farm’s Hippotherapy program is that it is fun. Clients who are coping with

We focus our treatments on improving the activities of daily living along with the unique goals of each client. There are very few individuals who could not participate in our program. As Quantum Leap Farm’s Hippotherapy Director and Physical Therapist, I have had the opportunity to combine my equestrian background and knowledge with my manual therapy skills for the benefit of our clients. Our program is growing as we add more horses to our superb team, and as we host two Hippotherapy courses this year (see below for details). These courses will train therapists to implement Hippotherapy into their treatment strategies and how to begin a Hippotherapy business themselves. Our herd of horses includes big and small, narrow and wide, white to black and every color in between. They are all sweet, willing and careful.

Imagine you step into a beautiful place and hear soothing music. Off to one side, you see the open door to a quiet prayer chapel. As you head to the front desk a staff member passes you, she makes eye contact and flashes a warm smile as she says hello. In the lobby, you decide if you want to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee or a cup of tea, but take only a few sips before being escorted back into the exam room. Once in the exam room, you feel like you are really being listened to. No one hurries you. You have all the time you need to explain and discuss what is bothering you. You know you are in good hands. You have peace of mind. Fortunately, you can now go beyond imagining and enjoy the reality of receiving your preventative and primary care at St Francis Total Care. No waiting weeks for appointments, Total Care Patients get same day or next day appointments, that start on time and last as long as necessary. Every Total Care patient gets the cell phone number and email of their medical provider, so they can be as-

“Hearing & Balance” Continued from page 1 Improving Hearing Dr. Hansen says that 95 percent of people with hearing loss can be helped with today's advanced hearing aid technology. She first determines each patient’s level of hearing with a comprehensive hearing evaluation. All patients receive a thorough examination before treatment options are discussed. Testing is performed in a certified sound booth for accurate results. There are two main causes of hearing loss; conductive (caused by anything that interferes with the transmission of sound from the outer to the inner ear), sensorineural (caused by damage to the pathway that sound impulses take from the hair cells of the inner ear to the auditory nerve and the brain), or a combinaScan this QR code for tion of the two. Many times Trinity Hearing & Balance’s prices are lower than large chain stores, and they come with individualized attention and fitting (unlike auto or average fitting), and the comfort of a money back guarantee. Marylou Tucker of Palm Harbor is so pleased with Trinity Hearing & Balance that she has been making the trip from Palm Harbor to Trinity to see Dr. Hansen for four years. Marylou explains, “Dr. Hansen is such a professional and caring person. She fixes any issues you have right away. She’s always available and easy to make appointments with. When it was time for me to update my hearing aids she put me in the best ones for me.” Tinnitus or Ringing in the Ears Tinnitus is a condition in which a person perceives sound that is not actually present in the environment. Come and join the Angel Family! See what some of our loyal customers have to say! HERE WE GROW AGAIN! on 20 years in the business to Donna and her teams. C ongratulations Donna and The Cleaning Angels initially came to my home in 2010 to offer an evaluation of my cleaning needs. It took only one visit to recognize that their service was considerably different than my previous ones. Their reliability, honesty and dedication to excellent service has proven itself again and again. -Michelle Marquis, Clearwater, Florida We have used The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service for the past two and a half years. Every two weeks we are more than satisfied with the service especially with Ileah who has been the head of the cleaning team that services our home. Their work is a very thorough professional cleaning. They are always prompt, courteous, trustworthy and willing to adapt to our schedule. Along with the regular cleaning each time, they include the baseboards, light fixtures and ceiling fans, blinds and much much more. Our home is always sparkling every time. -Sue and John Kelly Wyntree, New Port Richey, FL I hired the Cleaning Angels over a year ago to help keep my house clean, so I would have time to pick up more shifts at work, to help make ends meet. On my initial interview with Donna Ferrante, she came to my home and we walked through the house together. She gave details of her business and work ethic and expectations for customer satisfaction. Donna and her staff are extremely personable and very professional. I feel like everyone cares if I am satisfied or not. The Cleaning Angels staff has gone above and beyond to work with my husband and my difficult work schedules. I highly recommend the Cleaning Angels to assist in housing maintenance. They do a great job, they are reasonably priced, and with the time I save from having to clean the house myself, I am able to pick up extra shifts at work and do other errands and chores. Love, Love, Love!!!! -Jennifer Mugianis, Tarpon Springs, FL We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we ever got by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna; she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her company would be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be delivered because it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message was loud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has provided the phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. Our regular team, Ivonne and Anna are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done. Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me! -Esther and Michael Halman, Crescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs, FL

Before I started with the Cleaning Angels, I had tried numerous cleaning services. I was never happy with the results until I met Donna six years ago. She actually was still cleaning herself at that time. Congratulations for expanding your business and making it to 20 years. The service is always excellent they are prompt, efficient, professional, and their appearance is always great. They always have the correct products and equipment and their attention to detail goes above and beyond. My current lead is Ileah and she has been cleaning my house for several years and I just love her. I am very active in the Trinity community and have recommended the Cleaning Angels to many people. -Sandy Alekson, Champions Club, Trinity, FL

Nine years ago, I was looking for a cleaning lady and found Donna. At that time she went by Donna’s Cleaning Service. She cleaned my home herself for about two years. When she broke her foot and had to hire girls to help out, I initially was concerned. However that concern was short lived as Donna trains her girls to clean exactly like she does. Since then these girls come into my home and do their magic. I have many disabilities and they go way beyond to make sure that my house is clean and that I am happy. They do special things for me to make my life easier. I want to thank Sandy who use to clean my home and now is in the office with Donna. Congratulations for all your accomplishments Donna! -Fran Mischler, Port Richey, FL I have had the great pleasure of hiring and being in the company of the Cleaning Angels Cleaning Service. They are incredibly accommodating and have superior customer service. I have rarely come across a service organization that is so professional and extremely pleasant to work with. Every time "the Angels " come to my house, it gets better and better. Budget cuts have hit the majority of Americans, but I will give up other things before I would ever consider giving up "my Angels". -Tina Redmond, Keystone Bluffs, Tarpon Springs, FL The Cleaning Angel has been a consistent and dependable cleaning service, working around our family, house guests and home construction. They have been responsive to our special requests and once they know what we like, they provide great value added customer service. I would recommend them to others. -Susan Rolston, East Lake Woodlands, Oldsmar, FL I was looking for a cleaning service and was referred to The Cleaning Angels. I didn’t think they would come this far but called them anyway and they were more than happy to put me in their schedule. I live a 440 West and the girls are cleaning up this town. There have been a lot of unhappy people in the Clearwater Beach area and now word is out. We finally found the best. Congratulations Donna and so happy to have found you. -Katherine Sullivan, Clearwater Beach, FL As far as I am concerned there is only one cleaning service in the Tampa Bay area and that is the Cleaning Angels. They came into my home the first time and did a deep spring clean and was I ever blown away. I have never seen a cleaning service do the detail work these girls did. Donna sent four girls and they stayed for seven hours and my home is about 2700 sf. They hand washed all my baseboards, did the blinds in a three step process, washed every door and door frame in the whole house, moved every little knick knack and got into every little corner possible. Two weeks before I used a different service that promised a spring clean. They sent two girls that stayed in my home for 2-½ hours. After throwing my money away I was referred to Donna by someone in Land o Lakes. I’ve told many people if you are looking for your home to be cleaned correctly, don’t waste your time on other maid services. Call the Cleaning Angels if you want it done right and you will never have to find anyone else. Congratulations on your 20 years and hope you have many, many more. -Betty Bennett, Odessa, FL
