By Diane Galemmo The Pasco Mobile Medical Care Unit “Alone We Can Do So Little, Together We Can Do So Much” _Helen Keller The Pasco Mobile Medical Care Unit (MMCU) held a rededication event on Apr. 22 at the Medical Center of Trinity to honor the start of a second year of taking health care to the streets via a medical office on wheels; the mobile unit cares for the homeless and for residents with little or no insurance. The homeless population of Pasco County numbers an extraordinary 4,500 people spread over 745 square miles. Although there are many social needs impacting this population one major need emerges – the need to obtain basic health care. The homeless population's lack of access to transportation and medication, as well as an inability to navigate the "system" makes the MMCU necessary.
4
In 2011 the Pasco County Homeless Advisory Board (HAB) implemented the Mobile Medical Care Unit. Commissioner Pat Mulieri and the county’s HAB helped set up the mobile medical unit. Since full-time operations began in August 2012, the van now makes more than a dozen stops at various locations throughout the county each month. The program has provided medical care to 1,200 clients between April 2012 and March 2013. In addition, 1,100 received flu immunizations during Sept. 2012 through Mar. 2013. The MMCU offers treatment for brief illnesses, such as strep throat and ear infections, as well as ongoing care for long-term illnesses, such as high-blood pressure and diabetes. The MMCU was purchased in Feb. 2011 with private donations. All five Pasco hospitals provided funding; partners and sponsors were listed as Pasco's Shining Stars on the face of the MMCU thanks to the generosity of the Pasco Leadership Class of 2012.

Also recognized as Shining Stars, were a long list of local hospitals and other partners who donated. Since its inception 20 years ago the Pasco Leadership Class has been devoted to helping develop leadership in Pasco County. It has also been devoted to giving its members a deeper understanding of the county’s physical makeup, its social issues, its strengths, weaknesses and its potential. Dr. Jim Withers, founder of Operation Safety Net, who is known as the father of street medicine, says, “The essence of health care is going to where people are, either physically, spiritually or emotionally. When they are shown that they matter, when that really sinks in, hope grows and amazing things happen. Street medicine is the return of the universal practice of bringing doctors to patients in need rather than bringing patients to medical facilities. Its mission is to provide care for those living and sleeping on the streets.” (For more information, visit streetmedicine.org). Many community leaders as well as local residents were present at the rededication ceremony. Speakers included: Commissioner Pat Mulieri, Pastor Leonard Lord, Public Defender

Connections was founded by Medical Mission Sister Joan Foley 22 years ago. Sr. Foley served for 16 years as a medical missionary sister in Pakistan and Bangladesh. She once led the Homeless Coalition of Pasco and she established the St. Vincent de Paul Resource Center in New Port Richey, a place where the homeless or those at risk for homelessness can go for help. Now retired, but still active at 81, Sr. Foley traveled once again from her home in Philadelphia to attend the fundraiser. Connections' goal is to help residents find work. All services to clients and businesses are FREE and all proceeds from their events benefit Connections. Since its humble beginnings (Sr. Foley began the preliminary work from the back seat of her car). In the ensuing 22 years, Connections has gone on to provide the unemployed and the underemployed with a wealth of free services designed to help them find work. For the silent auction, a variety of gift baskets were donated by more than 50 area businesses. The baskets were designed and constructed by Impressions of You in Palm Harbor. The event would not have been possible without its many donors and sponsors. The major sponsor of the event was the Tampa Bay Times. Other sponsors included the United Way of Pasco County, HUD Community Development Block Grant Hernando Community College, Spherion Staffing and the Community Service Council of West Pasco, Sen. A Fast-Growing Florida Sensation By Fields Puckett Angela’s Pizza Shop is a north county restaurant that is new and growing fast. It’s caring owner, delicious food, and fun atmosphere are drawing crowds quickly and steadily, and it doesn’t look as if they will be stopping any time soon. Why come to Angela’s Pizza Shop? The heart of the restaurant is the owner. Josh Chabator. Florida born with an Italian parentage, Chaba-

His menu runs the gamut of Italian (and American) favorites, including pasta dishes, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, desserts and of course a variety of fresh, housecrafted pizzas (available for dine-in or delivery!) in a massive amount of flavorful varieties. Aside from the selection, Chabator has a real passion for fresh, flavorful foods, securing the

finest ingredients and recipes, and he has excellent business sense to top it all off. Now 24 years old, Chabator opened the first Angela’s Pizza Shop in Odessa at only 21 years of age. Excited to take on the challenge, he chose to make—what else—the foods he liked and knew best. He learned many of his techniques and recipes from a first-generation Sicilian working in his restaurant, and used that knowledge to expand and begin a second location. Chabator brought in experienced manager Dylan Garcia from his Odessa restaurant, and he brought in assistant manager and chef, David Hayes, from an Italian background in the Little Italy district of New York to further increase the location’s Italian authenticity. At any time, you can find these guys in the kitchen spinning dishrags if they are not actually spinning pizza dough. “The wet rags simulate the texture and weight of the dough, allowing us to practice and perfect our tossing techniques,” says Chabator. Brings a Taste of Latin America to Trinity By Julie Kanehl My idea of heaven is a Cuban sandwich done right, piled high with slow-roasted pork, ham, salami, Swiss cheese, mustard, mayo and pickles, pressed until the freshly baked bread just crinkles, and the delicious ingredients in the middle quietly melt into each little nook and cranny. The Dog House – A Dog’s Place to Just be a Dog! By Katie Thomas The Dog House is located right off of shady, oak lined Tarpon Springs Road, and offers dogs a pup-paradise in a lush tropical setting. Boasting over an acre and a half of fenced boarding and play area, The Dog House is the perfect place for your dog to romp, play, socialize and receive individualized attention from experienced trainers and staff. The Dog House is a trusted friend to local dog owners and is a favorite destination for dog boarding, training and daycare since it was opened nearly five years ago by owners Jamie OccHionero and Sony Zorek. “We started with only six dogs,” says Sony. “Thanks to the community and our clients, we have been able to enjoy business growth and are looking forward to expanding in the near future!” From obstacle courses, a swimming pool and self-filling water dishes to digging areas, cage-less suites and inside/outside play areas, The Dog House is brimming with doggone good times! It is actually like a doggie resort where your dog is a cherished guest. Jamie and Sony each have years of

experience working with dogs of all breeds, and treat every dog as they do their own – with love! There are no breed restrictions at The Dog House. Jamie says, “We love all dogs and we make sure that we really get to know each dog and how he/she interacts within the pack; from there we pair accordingly with the other dogs for socialization.” The dogs I met while visiting The Dog House truly had great temperaments and happy demeanors and really love their time spent at The Dog House. Customer Blanca Hobana says, “Kaos can’t wait to get to The Dog House EVERY day! He’s always so excited when he sees me getting ready to leave the house because he thinks he’s going to daycare! He plays so hard all day that he’s ready for bed as soon as we get home and he also gets plenty of loving from the awesome staff. If I’m ever traveling, I always board him there as well.” When you first visit The Dog House, one of the professional staff members will have you fill out an enrollment application, which goes on file for safekeeping. The enrollment application verifies vet records, last flea

Misters and outside swimming areas all benefit the dogs from getting too hot, and they absolutely love playing in the water! Each play area is fenced in and for dogs that may be jumpers there is a play pen, where the dog can’t jump the fence or dig. For smaller dogs and puppies, The Dog House sports a puppy area. I believe in preventative training; stopping a problem before it occurs is key to a happy, healthy and well behaved dog.” The Dog House is cage-free optional so your dog will be housed cagefree if you prefer. The cage-free option allows dogs (unless they are aggressive with other dogs) to be kept in open rooms where, despite not being outside, the dogs can still roam as they please. This allows for a unique unforgettable experience for every dog. Of course, kennels are available as many dogs are crate-trained and prefer to nap and rest in their crate.

Classes and Training Through Play! The Dog House offers classes for manners, obedience, agility, searchand-rescue, as well as basic training. Jamie and Sony can teach your dog(s) very useful techniques and abilities that will benefit the whole family. The courses last eight weeks and are well worth the time and money. Trinity Village Dental Gives Patients A Lot to Smile About! By Kim Thomas Dr. Jincy Daniel understands how important it is for people to have a healthy smile and is dedicated to helping patients achieve a beautiful smile and keep it! She greeted me at her newly opened practice, Trinity Village Dental, with a big, radiant smile and shared her story, explaining why she is so passionate about dentistry and why it is so important that her patients enjoy their visit. Trinity Village Dental, located on S.R. 54 behind Bonefish Grill, is spacious, immaculate and comfortable for patients, offering water and coffee in the waiting room and even pillows for the treatment rooms. “We make sure everyone feels that they are very important,” says Dr. Daniel. “I have a great team! I love my team – the girls are all awesome. They are like me – we love to take care of people and try to provide a very relaxed atmosphere. We laugh, we have fun and our patients laugh with us. It’s homey here.” Working with Dr. Daniel are office manager Lisa, dental assistant Jessica,

and dental hygienist Dana. With six treatment rooms, digital panoramic x-rays, an intraoral camera and monitors where patients can easily see what Dr. Daniel is seeing, Trinity Village Dental has all the bells and whistles of any top-notch, full-service dental practice. Trinity Village Dental’s services include: preventative dentistry, tooth colored fillings, whitening procedures, cosmetic dentistry, emergency care and same day appointments, periodontal therapy, endodontics (root canal therapy) and extractions, as well as implant restorations, dentures, crowns, bridges, partials and more. Meet Jincy Daniel, D.M.D. Dr. Daniel is vivacious, friendly and outgoing, and you’d never guess it but she hasn’t always loved her own smile. As a child, when a giggle bubbled forth, her hand automatically went up to hide her smile. Now, Dr. Daniel has so much compassion for her patients because it was through the help of dentistry that she gained selfconfidence. “I knew right out of high

Godly is the director of a foster care agency in the Tampa Bay area called 4KIDS of West Central Florida. Together, the Daniels have been actively involved in youth ministries in their local church for many years. Dr. Daniel is a very giving person with a big heart and it was really uplifting to hear her longterm goals – not your average list. “I’d like to help set up clinics in underserved areas,” shares Dr. Daniel. “I just feel the reason God put me here and the reason I’m in dentistry is to help people who don’t have access to care. I have to find the avenues to make that happen. One day, I want to teach other dentists how to set up clinics and reach more people. There are villages in remote areas around the world where people have never heard of a dentist. That is where I want to go and serve. Some day!” No doubt, the future holds adventure and growth for Dr. Daniel, but for now, she is fully dedicated to

providing her patients with the most excellent, comprehensive dental care possible. She looks forward to growing her practice here in Trinity, where her girls can grow up strong, healthy and happy. She says, “Here, I get to take care of my patients the way that I want to and treat them they way they should be treated. I love people and really enjoy getting to know my patients.” Gentle Dental – Affordable Dental “I’m known for being gentle and I have small hands,” Dr. Daniel says with a laugh, holding her hands up. “My biggest concern is for my patients’ comfort. Even if it takes a little longer, I don’t mind. We are never going to be a fast-paced, clinic type of office. I feel like if you are coming here and trusting us with your care – you deserve to be treated like family.” Patient comfort is extremely important to Dr. Daniel. She understands that some patients are anxious about the dental procedures they need, so oral sedation is provided when needed and nitrous oxide will be added to services in the near future. “Oral sedation works great for the patients who need it,” says Dr. Daniel. Dr. Daniel realizes that dental
work can be expensive and Trinity Village Dental makes every effort to help patients figure out how to take care of their needs based on their time and finances. “I purposely spend extra time with patients on their first visit to get to know their needs and to find out what they want,” says Dr. Daniel. She identifies the problems that need to be taken care of right away, and works with her patients by preparing a stepby-step plan to help them reach optimal dental health. “Everything that is wrong doesn’t need to be fixed in one appointment,” says Dr. Daniel. Her goal is to make sure that when a treatment option is given, she is keeping the big picture in mind for the patient, and she strives to understand each person's individual goals and desires for their dental health. One patient who was very unhappy with his smile worked with office manager Lisa to find an affordable treatment plan for composite veneers. “The result was phenomenal,” says Dr. Daniel. “He said it was the first time he had smiled in five years. The smile on his face was priceless and he gave me a big bear hug after he saw his smile. That is a reaction I look forward to …that genuine confidence from a happy, healthy smile.”

Curves Complete - Makes Buring Fat as Easy as 1, 2, 3! By Kim Thomas Curves isn’t just a girl gym; it is a company that celebrates women, providing a fitness and weight loss plan based on science that truly works! The largest fitness franchise in the world, Curves has thousands of locations in more than 90 countries and offers women a one-stop program, called Curves Complete, that includes exercise, diet, and one-on-one coaching all in one place. There are many weight loss programs that give you an eating plan and tell you to exercise, but Curves Complete is different because it provides its clients with everything under one roof that they will need to succeed – exercise and nutritional supplements, coaching and encouragement, and a healthy weight loss plan that is designed to keep you feeling satisfied while you build muscle and lose fat. Sounds expensive, right? But it isn’t! Curves Complete is only $12.95 a week with a six-month agreement, and makes burning fat easy with a 3-step plan that includes: 1–Exercise; 2–Meal
Plan; 3–Coaching. And, if you mention this article or the Curves ad in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, you can get 50 percent off of the service fee and get your “Tools4Success” Kit absolutely free. A fantastic value! The Tools4Success Kit ($50 value) is complete with everything you need to get started: pedometer, water bottle and a week’s supply of Essentials 2 Go (Curves’ multivitamin, calcium, and omega 3 supplements). If you don’t need to diet and are interested in just a fitness membership, mention us and get 50 percent off the service fee and 30 days free! Curves has been in our area for almost ten years and has members of all ages; currently, the youngest is 14 and the oldest is 88. It used to be located at Mitchell Ranch Plaza on Little Road until six months ago when Curves relocated to the Chelsea Place Plaza, just a few minutes from East Lake where Mitchell Boulevard and Seven Springs Boulevard intersect. On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to talk with a lot of local ladies who say that Curves not only has changed their lives for the bet-
ter – but it is FUN! I’ve never seen a group enjoy working out so much. Everyone was having such a great time that the high-energy, 30minute circuit training flew by and then they were all ready to participate in the Curves Circuit with Zumba. Those classes are offered three times a week, on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m., on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and at 9 a.m. on Saturday. I was in higher education for 20 years and fitness and nutrition were the only other areas in which I was really interested. Curves motto is two words, ‘Strengthening Women,’ and I’m lucky that I get to do that every day.” Curves Complete Local Success Stories “Curves will change your life! It changed my life and helped with my self-esteem. I love this place!” exclaimed Josephine, a resident of Trinity who has been a member of Curves for four years and just celebrated her 1,000th workout – yes, one thousand! She proudly showed off her Curves’ 1,000 celebratory t-shirt, just one of the many incentives at Curves. New to Curves, Santa has only been a member for one week but already feels better. “I enjoy it,” says Santa. “It’s very good and it’s not hard. I have felt a difference right away and the vitamins help a lot. I am shocked.” Weight loss is important to many members and Curves Complete delivers. Trinity resident Rose shares that she lost 14 pounds and 15 inches in six weeks. “I can’t live without it! I’m going to do it for myself this time,” says Rose, adding “and it’s not just the coaches who are wonderful here but

also all of the ladies. There is a lot of encouragement.” Karen, also from Trinity, says, “It’s fantastic. I’ve lost 20 pounds and 11 inches in 12 weeks, so I say IT WORKS!” New Port Richey resident, Nancy has lost 45 pounds. She shares, “I love it! It is the only program that has worked for me. I’ve tried Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem – I’ve tried them all. Curves Complete is the only program where I have kept off the weight, and I am continuing to lose.” Joanne piped in, “She was a very good participant. She did everything I told her to do.” Then Nancy shared how Curves really changed her life, “Fifteen years ago I had a heart attack. Curves has really been a life saver. This place is wonderful and Joanne is the reason why – if they could just clone Joanne and put her in every single Curves, they would be a lucky company!” Curves Complete is Personalized to Work For You “The Curves workout helps you build lean muscle,” says Joanne. “That is where Curves Complete differs from most weight loss programs where people lose muscle. With strength training building and maintaining muscle, you are losing only fat. For instance if you
lost 20 pounds with this program, 15 of those pounds may be fat and that is what you want to lose. Muscle is more metabolically active, so maintaining muscle is key to prolonged weight loss.” Joanne showed me how the circuit training machines work for all levels of fitness, “from those who’ve never set foot in a gym before all the way to marathon runners.” She explains, “Because of the hydraulic Josephine shows off the Curves t-shirt that cylinder [construction] they are ac- celebrates her 1,000th workout at Curves! tually pushing fluid through the with women who will support and encylinder to create resistance.” courage you, benefit from weekly A nifty little key tag, called CurvesSmart, which is a personal coach- coaching sessions, and have fun, then Curves is right for you. ing system, is given to each member If you are a member of the Silver and it keeps track of your workouts. Pasco County Public Transportation Getting People To Where They Want To Go By Marcy Sanford Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) has buses in this area that can help you get where you need to go. Here are a few “Facts on Public Transportation” from the American Public Transportation Association: 1. One-fourth of today’s 75+ age group does not drive, making public transportation a lifeline for older adults. 2. If one in 10 Americans used public transportation regularly, the U.S. reliance on foreign oil could be cut by more than 40%, which translates to the amount of oil we import from Saudi Arabia each year. 3. Emissions from road vehicles are the largest contributors to smog. 4. The National Safety Council estimates that riding the bus is over 170 times safer than automobile travel. 5. Public transportation saves you money.

If you are a senior citizen who is no longer comfortable driving, someone who is interested in helping to make a positive environmental impact, a student without a car who would like to get out of the house this summer, or just someone who is fed up with fighting daily traffic, Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT) might be able to help you with your transportation needs. Last year PCPT helped more than a million people get to their destinations.

PCPT operates 18 fixed-route transit buses on ten routes, which include two routes traveling into Northern Pinellas County and one connecting with Hillsborough County. In West Pasco, the service is provided in the northwest area at Denton Avenue in Hudson, eastward to Little Road, and south to Tarpon Springs where there is a connection with the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and also along S.R. 54 from Little Road to the Zephyrhills Town Center. You can see a full map of all the bus routes including route 54 online. Route 54 starts on Little Road at the Medical Center of Trinity and then travels down S.R. 54 to Zephyrhills City Hall. There are stops along the way at Suncoast Crossings where you can shop at Super Target or Petco, or

Along S.R. 54 there are plenty of medical offices, retail shops, and restaurants meaning this bus can take you to any number of appointments, places for entertainment, or potential summer jobs. PCPT is committed to providing efficient, reliable, and cost effective public transportation. To make sure that they are serving the public’s needs, PCPT has held several openhouse style public workshops over the past year. “Our workshops have been very successful,” say Nina Stampli, Program Coordinator for PCPT. “The people who came to the workshops gave us some very valuable input. We also had staff there to answer questions and provide information about all of our services.” Free Ride Days, Student Summer Haul Pass & More! PCPT has several ride free days coming up. They can even take you to Pasco Hernando Community College if you need to take an extra class this summer. All Buses are equipped with Bike racks. The Old Becomes New Again – CARE Elfers Center By Diane Galemmo Closed for nearly eight years, the CARE Elfers Center had its grand reopening Friday, May 10, in time for the centennial of the historic schoolhouse building in 2014. The ceremony began with the Gulf High School NJROTC color guard and ended with the ribbon cutting. Safety problems, mainly due to crumbling structures, forced closure of the landmark building in May 2005. Repairs begun in 2009 have fortified the crumbling structure, stabilizing and renovating it, says Bill Aycrigg, former executive director of CARES. No local tax money was used for the $2 million project, which drew on Community Development Block Grants and U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development funding which was secured by then U.S. Representative Mike Bilirakis, thereby avoiding the wrecking ball. This historic building began as the Elfers School in 1914 through 1965. From 1979 to 2005 it func-

tioned as a CARES senior center. From 2006 to 2013 it remained unused, ostensibly awaiting monies in order to rebuild the crumbling structure. And now, the renovated Center dropped the word "senior" to reflect the goal of broadening the appeal of the many programs it offers. The Center will offer a range of activities such as ballroom dancing, tai chi, yoga, zumba, bridge, a computer lab and a satellite branch of the New Port Richey library. Advanced computer courses are in the works, along with more health and wellness programs. The new south wing houses an attractive cafe with a warming kitchen, (one can buy soups, sandwiches and salads for a reasonable price), and an ample activity room for activities such as gentle exercise, line dancing, wood carving, stained glass and painting. The Center offers a thrift and gift shop and will also provide a range of health, legal and financial educational seminars. Brenda Martyniak, public relations coordinator for the nonprofit

Community Aging and Retirement Services, says, "It is gorgeous.” The center will be a satellite branch of the New Port Richey Public Library, and ROTC students are helping to stock library shelves. “We are going to provide books and other materials for the library,” says library director Susan Dillinger. “We have created a location code for them on our automated system.” "Volunteers will be hanging some historic images of the old school, which we had enlarged and made into art canvases,” Martyniak reports. rooms will feature Wi-Fi connectivity to the Internet so business people can make presentations, perhaps over lunch. Catered meals will be available at the center and coffee will be available in the morning. The CARES travel department has its own bus and will continue to set up field trips for its members. Now the center appears to be becoming a beehive of activity once again, says an elated Evie Parks, director of the facility. Alton Voss – Overcoming Addiction By Matt Selby Addiction can affect anyone; whether it is a loved one, a neighbor, a friend or even yourself. It tears apart families, relationships and communities. The Ross Poel Organization, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to sponsoring selected individuals in need of treatment for drug addiction, who otherwise may not be able to afford their entire treatment, believes everyone deserves the opportunity to be cured. Thanks to this wonderful organization, Alton Voss, someone who I have known since the age of 9, has overcome his addiction and is on the road back to a healthy, drug free, meaningful life. Alton and I grew up together playing football. I knew him long before addiction ever had a grip on his life. Alton was always the biggest kid on the field, and sometimes it was hard for my teammates and me to grasp that he was our age. I can remember when we were 11 Alton couldn’t play half the season because his body was growing too fast. He had

ankle and foot problems from the fast growth and by the age of 12, the kid was wearing size 13 shoes and stood about 6 feet tall. The rest of us were lucky to be 5 feet tall, but at least we could play. When he was able to play, we crushed teams. I played quarterback and Alton was a receiver and running back. All we had to do was get him the ball and it took the entire defense to take him down. We had a lot of fun playing youth football and everyone knew Alton was going to be a great ball player when he grew up. Fast forward to high school; by this time Alton and I had grown apart a bit, as we went to different schools. I played quarterback for Tarpon High School in Pinellas County and Alton now played quarterback and safety for Gulf High School in Pasco County. On the offensive side of the ball, Alton and I both led our counties in QB statistics and we both landed 1st team all county honors as quarterbacks. We talked every now and then, but I had no idea what Alton was battling during this time and, even worse, neither did he. He didn’t know it yet, but he

had a few triggers mentally that always made him feel a little bit off. It all started when he tried his first Roxycodone pill during the second semester of his senior year of high school. He loved the feeling of bliss and euphoria and instantly he was hooked; it helped him escape from the dayto-day stress, and any negativity on his mind seemed to disappear. “I Alton Voss (Right) shows off championship had no idea what I had trophy in Argentina gotten myself into at the time and knowing what I more times. He told Graduating high school, Alton everyone that had he lost his passion stood 6 foot 3 inches tall and weighed for the game – something he had about 225 pounds. Many college loved so much growing up. hit an all time low when a friend showed him how to contort his back to make it look like he had a disorder so he could get pain pills. He went to a pain clinic and after manipulating the MRI results to look like he had bulging disks, Alton was prescribed 240 Roxycodone, 120 Oxycontin and 90 muscle relaxers. Alton knew this was way too many pills for him, but still felt like he’d won the lottery. He decided to sell the pills he didn’t consume himself, and the addict now became the dealer for many. Alton eventually enrolled at St.

Petersburg College and soon after he had what he refers to as a “manic episode.” By this time, Alton was doing pills, marijuana, and even some crack if it was around. The drugs, mixed with his underlying triggers, were a disastrous combination. After his episode, he booked a flight to Michigan and decided a change in scenery was needed. Unfortunately, Michigan was no better for Alton, at least not at first. Soon after arriving in Michigan, Alton was arrested and charged with a felony. He went to the Ottawa County Jail
(OCJ), and a week into his stay, he was sent to Hackley Hospital where he was misdiagnosed as schizophrenic and bi-polar. He was sent back to OCJ and this is where he was introduced to his attorney. She was able to get his charges reduced to a misdemeanor and he returned to Florida. They stayed in contact after he arrived back in Florida. Coach Larry Beets – A Long Legacy Of Coaching By Alexis Selby There are certain people who we encounter who will forever make a lasting impression in our lives; who inspire us to be better and help shape us to become the people we are today. Baseball coach Larry Beets is one of those people. For over 36 years Coach Beets has served as a mentor, a coach, a teacher, and most importantly, a friend. He has taught the importance of hard work and dedication and helped his students and his players to succeed in both the classroom and on the field. Coach Beets says, “Baseball is not all about winning or losing; it is about making a difference in people’s lives. It is about the people you meet and the relationships you build and getting the most out of your players, the other coaches and most importantly – yourself.” I was fortunate enough to have been a student of Coach Beets, and it is my honor to write about the legacy of such an inspirational mentor! Coach Beets grew up playing ball,

and his coaching career began with a love of the game and a vision. He says, “I got into coaching because I wanted to be able to give athletes that sense of camaraderie that I experienced playing sports and convey to others what my coaches gave to me.” After graduating from Austin Peay State University in Tennessee, he accepted a coaching position at Gulf High School in 1974, thus beginning his career. After coaching for five years, including three at Gulf High and two at Hudson, Coach Beets transferred to Ridgewood, where he remained as the head varsity coach for the next 28 years. When he started at Ridgewood, it was merely a junior high school, and together with other members of the staff helped build the baseball stadium from the ground up. Step-by-step and brick-bybrick Coach Beets helped lay the foundation for Ridgewood High School’s baseball team and the future of their athletic program. Coach Beets is married to Donna, his lovely wife of 40 years who he met in college, who is also a teacher, and together they have a beautiful daughter Bethany.

Much of Ridgewood’s baseball success could be attributed to Coach Beets’ rigorous work ethic and strategy. “Repetition is the key to success,” says Coach Beets. “We never took a day off. House of Hobbies Celebrates 50 Years of Building Traditions By Katie Thomas October 6, 2012 was a very special day at House of Hobbies in Palm Harbor. It marked the 50th Anniversary of this well-stocked hobby shop that has been serving the community with a way to satisfy their hobbyist needs since 1962! A hobby is a great way to pursue an interest and express creativity through a fun, relaxing activity. At House of Hobbies you can find all the components necessary to start a new hobby, finish a current project, learn something new and build relationships with like-minded people who have the answers to all of your hobby questions. House of Hobbies owners Bob and Barbara Kotimaki have embraced the opportunity to help build family traditions and strengthen family ties through hobbies. Barbara says they have multiple generations of families as customers and she hears all the time, “I want my son’s first model to come from the same shop where I got my first model.” Even the littlest ones can enjoy building at House of Hob-

His second model was built with his mom. “It was a special moment for all,” shares Barbara. “He is very protective of his models and keeps them on display in his room.” As a hobby enthusiast, Bob wanted to offer a place where a person could walk in and find the hobby meant for their personal liking. Bob’s wife Barbara says, “There was not a hobby he was not interested in or involved in. He was determined to provide a hobby shop which provided all facets of model hobbies.” Bob opened his first shop in Clearwater and after ten years of business there, he gained the success and repertoire it took to open a second shop in New Port Richey. The Clearwater store was in operation on Ft. Harrison Avenue for 42 years and the New Port Richey store operated for 32 years! Eight years ago, Bob merged the two stores to one location in Palm Harbor; Barbara and Jen (their daugh-

“ECLA” Continued from page 1 our two-year-old girl because we were impressed with the Academy Director, teaching staff and diverse curriculum. After several months, our expectations have been exceeded. They are passionate about caring for our child, which is evidenced by the fact that she absolutely loves going there, and also loves her teacher. We feel good about leaving her there knowing that she is not only in a safe environment, but one in which she is challenged and thriving. They live up to the name – it’s more than a day care, it really is a learning center. We highly recommend Excel Creative Learning Academy to other parents.” Academy Director, “Ms. Erika” Mahoney, is a Florida State Certified Teacher with nearly 10 years of experience, and is known for her commitment to the children and their parents. “I still love to teach and I spend as much time in the classrooms as I possibly can to model literacy curriculum,” says Mahoney. “Even the young children get a lot out of the SMART Board technology, which is awesome! With the youngest children we use it

in very small amounts, but each classroom becomes a virtual classroom with the SMART Boards. For example, the older kids have been learning about sunflowers. They planted seeds in their classroom and then will transplant them to the playground gardens to watch them grow. Using the SMART Board, we are able to take the kids to a thriving sunflower garden in Italy. The kids loved watching the flowers sway in the wind.” ECLA’s private playground, surrounded by an eight-foot fence, gives the children a beautiful, grassy minipark to play in and there’s even a garden to watch their flowers grow. The littlest ones get to enjoy the park as well, as their teachers take them for a stroll in their fancy multi-infant stroller. Keeping Your Little One Safe, Happy & Secure Safety is of the utmost importance at ECLA. In order to get into the academy, parents walk into the building and go up the elevator to the second floor. The main door is always locked and monitored by a camera, and once inside there is someone to greet them in the lobby. Parents and

ers is a whole lot of attention. Only taking 8 infants at a time, the certified teachers in the infant room keep to a curriculum that is 100% tender love and care. Each feeding and diapering need is met immediately, and the infant room is kept impeccably clean; in fact, it’s a shoe-free environment! Each child is given their own crib, and their parents can decorate it and furnish it as they would like, bringing a little bit of home to school for their little one. There is always an open-door policy for parents at ECLA, so parents enjoy being able to stop in and see their babies whenever they can get a chance, no matter how old their child is. Ms. Erika says, “It’s harder for the parents at first than it is for the kids! They settle in quickly and enjoy it here. Parents are welcome any time to come and be with their children, and we have a few hospital employees who come over whenever they get a break. Moms often come in to breastfeed their babies as well.” As the children get older they are given more space to roam, but are still held while they are fed, the diapers are constantly checked, and they play, learn and discover throughout the day.
They sing songs, “read” books with their teachers, go out to play and have a nice nap while mom and dad are at work all day. Potty training is done in concert with the parent’s choice and the child’s age and individual readiness. When you and your child are ready, the ECLA staff will support and guide your child through the process during the day. Naptime is an essential part of a child’s life, and each child is given a cot and a clean cot sheet to sleep on so that no child is laying on the floor for their naptime. It is so cute to see the little ones all curled up with their “lovies” on their cots, listening to soft, quiet music. Healthy eating also is important to parents and staff alike at ECLA. In fact, the entire facility is peanut-free, so that students who have peanut allergies will be able to breathe easy. Healthy snacks are offered throughout the day, and soon there will be a way for parents to order organic food, snacks and treats for their children directly through ECLA’s website. These early years are so important, and yet – while they may not be at home with mom and dad, they are receiving one-on-one care and atten-
tion while learning the essential educational building blocks that will put them ahead of the class. These are the kids that will know their alphabet, their numbers and how to write their names when it is time for public school to begin.

conditioner.” She adds, “All of our employees are highly trained, uniformed, background checked, and have to undergo random drug testing. We do this because we want our customers to know that they are protected.” Kim and Ed agree that without their employees’ hard work and dedication they would not be as successful. “As a growing business, we want high quality professionals working as a team,” says Ed. “Our employees help us become successful. They have great attitudes and strive to give great customer service. We are only as successful as our employees make us, so we want them to be happy, skilled and professionally trained.” As a member of UWin Contractors, a company that guarantees consumer satisfaction and protection, One Hour Air is held accountable for complete customer satisfaction.
