Trinity Family Physicians Offers Customized Health Care

By Julie Kanehl Brain Balance Achievement Centers have changed the way that children who face learning challenges become successful. The proven strategies used are completely customized to your child and help them to exercise their brains, the way we exercise our bodies! Brain Balance helps children who have ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities or Processing Disorders, to work beyond those challenges and become

more successful socially, developmentally and cognitively. More children are diagnosed with a learning, cognitive or processing disorder every day, and modern medicine’s only approach thus far has been for children to take pills that have numerous side effects. Brain Balance Achievement Centers take a whole-child approach that is personalized and focused on finding the

root cause, instead of masking the symptoms. For parents who have children who struggle with these issues, Brain Balance offers more than a program, it offers proven results. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa, located at 4022 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, is one of more than 50 Brain Balance Centers See “Brain Balance” on page 36.

Are you tired of feeling like a number at the doctor’s office? Are you sick of waiting around for a doctor that doesn’t remember your name without holding your chart? The philosophy at Trinity Family Physicians is different. Their approach embraces the straightforward, good old-fashioned golden rule, meaning they treat patients the way that they’d want to be treated. It helps, too, that the Trinity Family Physicians are, in fact, a husband and wife team! If you’re looking for a practice that will take your health seriously, listen to your concerns, respect your decisions, and invest their time and energy into partnering with you in your health care, make an appointment with the Trinity Family Physicians, located at 1817 Cypress Brook

Stephanie Eldridge MD, MPH, and Amir Shirmohammad MD, MPH, actually grew up in the Tampa Bay Area. High school sweethearts, they have a tight knit family of their own, so they can relate to the busy families whom they treat, and understand that everyone’s time is valuable. That said, their approach is far more quality over quantity. Board Certified, Dr. Eldridge and “Dr. Shirmo” have created a practice that serves the community in a multitude of ways since beginning their practice in 2007. They were first in our area to offer a Concierge Practice; patients who participate in that program essentially have an all-access pass to their doctors at any time, quicker

Matt Selby We have BIG NEWS that we think many of our readers will have an interest in. Especially our baseball fans out there. We recently entered into a partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays and they offered us season tickets for 6 people. This includes hundreds of tickets for the season and although we are a family business with tons of family and friends here in the Bay area who are huge Rays fans, there is no possible way we can make it to every single game. Obviously we don’t want these prime, press level tickets going to waste and who better to share them with than you, so we came up with a contest to give our loyal readers AND advertisers a chance to win big with tickets to go see the Rays. Each month, starting in May and ending in September, we will give away multiple press level (sec.204) Rays’ tickets to 5 lucky winners. One Grand Prize winner per month will receive 6 tickets and 2 parking passes.

Brooker Creek Elementary Kindergarteners Wowed with RED!

School is almost out, but the kindergarteners at Brooker Creek Elementary have created some great memories for themselves and their families this school year. Back in March, Brooker Creek Elementary kindergarteners presented a theatrical production of RED, Little RedWriting Hood, highlighting the talent of the children in Mrs. Crim’s class.

In this production, RED decided to rewrite traditional fairy tales to come up with some very creative endings. She is helpful, but at some point gets confused, causing problems for the fairytale characters. RED realizes that some stories shouldn’t be changed. Written by Jane Tesh with music by Joni Klein-Higger, this was a presentation that the students truly enjoyed performing in.

Providing Customized Solutions for Every Listening Lifestyle Dr. Kelly Hansen, Board Certified Audiologist of Trinity Hearing & Balance, has been helping to bring balance back into the lives of patients in the area for more than 20 years. Dr. Hansen wants people to know that they don’t need to live a life with vertigo, hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). She understands that these life-changing issues can cause

much suffering for a person, along with their family and friends. Dr. Hansen’s experience and state-of-theart equipment allows her to help each individual patient to enjoy better hearing, with an ultimate goal of helping them to have more enjoyment of life. Trinity Hearing & Balance is very convenient to all residents of West Pasco and North Pinellas neighbor-

hoods. It is located on Easthaven Court in Suite 101 at the River Crossing Professional Center on Little Road in the Trinity/ New Port Richey area. Dr. Hansen and her team at Trinity Hearing & Balance provide the highest level of auditory/vestibular evaluations and hearing aid services. The hearing and balance center is dedicated to providing patients with a scientific, yet nurturing approach to hearing care that is customized to meet each patient’s personal lifestyle, budget and needs. Dr. Hansen believes in staying on top of the latest technology and advances in hearing health; throughout her career she has attended numerous courses and workshops for dizziness (vertigo) and for balance and hearing disorders. Her training has awarded her with the

most up-to-date knowledge, diagnostic testing and treatments for specialty disorders. Dr. Hansen moved to Florida in 1990 and completed her clinical fellowship in ear, nose and throat medicine. Soon after, she worked at Suncoast Hospital, where she spent five years diagnosing and treating hearing, dizziness and balance disorders. After working for another ten years at an ear, nose and throat practice in Tarpon Springs, Dr. Hansen celebrated the opening of her own practice, Trinity Hearing & Balance, in 2006. Dr. Hansen is Board Certified in Audiology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology and is a Fellow

Dr. Kelly Hansen, Board Certified Audiologist at Trinity Hearing & Balance of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology. She served on the Florida Academy of Audiology Board and is a member of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce. At Trinity Hearing & Balance, you can expect excellent care from Dr. Hansen, backed by professional knowledge and courtesy. Audigy Certified – Find Relief from Vertigo Trinity Hearing & Balance is proud to be an Audigy Certified practice. Audigy Certified professionals are among the Country’s most experienced hearing care professionals, possessing some of the industry’s highest credentials. It isn’t an easy certification to earn; Audigy Certified professionals such as Dr. Hansen are evaluated and their expertise is measured by commitment to patient satisfaction, continuing education and the expert application of current technologies. As an Audigy Certified clinic, Trinity Hearing & Balance is able to

utilize the Epley Omniax System for the detection and treatment of vertigo. This system is the first technology that allows audiologists to differentiate between the various types of vestibular vertigo, as well as to diagnose and treat BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), the most common form of vertigo disorder. The Epley Omniax System also serves as a means to diagnose and treat dizziness associated with inner ear disorders. Diana Acosta said that she suffered with dizziness for at least three years before her ear, nose and throat doctor referred her to Dr. Hansen. Diana says, “I had difficulty looking up, down or getting up quickly. Even leaning down to the bottom kitchen cabinets made me dizzy. Dr. Hansen said that my condition was not uncommon and that I had small calcium pebbles dislodged in an area of the inner ear causing the vertigo effect. The positioning of the Omniax System chair allows the pebbles to move to an area of the inner ear where they belong, causing the vertigo to go away. It was a completely painless treatment and after only two sessions I was cured! I was amazed!” Trinity Hearing & Balance is also able to offer ePatient, a revolutionary digital education tool that answers patients’ questions about their hearing health. Part of the Audigy Care System, ePatient is patient-friendly and designed to optimize your understanding of hearing health and how hearing works and what happens when someone has hearing loss. “ePatient offers an overview of what is going to happen during the appointment as well as explaining how someone’s hearing works,” explains Dr. Hansen. “It is a treatment-focused software that enables us to quickly and effectively explain products and procedures to patients.” ePatient can actually show pa-

tients the anatomy of the ear and explain exactly what is going on with hearing in a way that is easy for patients to understand. Helping Patients Hear Clearly When diagnosing hearing loss in patients, Dr. Hansen first determines each patient’s level of hearing with a comprehensive hearing evaluation. All patients receive a thorough examination before treatment options are discussed. Dr. Hansen says that 95 percent of people with hearing loss can benefit from today’s advanced hearing aid technologies. Trinity Hearing & Balance performs testing in a certified sound booth for accurate results. Testing is performed to evaluate the two main causes of hearing loss – conductive (caused by anything that interferes with the transmission of sound from the outer to inner ear) and sensorineural (caused by damage to the pathway that sound impulses take from the hair cells of the inner ear to the auditory nerve and the brain). Once the cause of hearing loss is determined, Dr. Hansen takes the time to make sure that patients get a great result with custom fittings for hearing aids and the comfort of a money back guarantee if the product is not right for you. Dr. Hansen truly cares about building a lasting relationship with her patients, so their complete satisfaction is always a priority. Tinnitus, a sort of ringing or buzzing within the ear, is actually a common condition that can wreak havoc on a person’s peace of mind. Dr. Hansen believes that with new, revolutionary technology such as SoundCure®, patients can find lasting relief from tinnitus. SoundCure® utilizes a simple, flexible sound therapy system called Serenade® that is developed specifically for one’s individual tinnitus. The cutting-edge Serenade® system consists of a handheld device to

generate sound therapy, earphones and proprietary acoustic treatment that research has suggested may address the underlying neurological cause of tinnitus. Patients with ringing in the ear, whistling, whooshing or hissing sounds are often told they just have to live with it, but Dr. Hansen fully believes in the advances of the Serenade® system in helping with the symptoms of tinnitus. Gold Standard Service Dr. Kelly Hansen at Trinity Hearing & Balance Center provides her patients with premier customer service; she has set a gold standard for herself and her practice, continually exceeding the expectations of patients. Robert and Joan, a local couple wrote in, “We wanted to let you know how we appreciate your care and patience. You did not rush us or mind taking the time to do things right. We have had such bad luck with other hearing aids. It seems all we did was send the hearing aids to be repaired and pay more money. At times we thought we would never find any help or be able to hear. Our home life was very frustrating as you can imagine. Now, it is unbelievable. We feel like life is worth living again. We highly recommend Dr. Hansen.” Trinity Hearing & Balance Center is located at 8605 Easthaven Ct., Suite 101, at the River Crossing Professional Center in New Port Richey. ing as well as knowledgeable. The personal family feeling comes across with every team member that works there. The enthusiasm and energy is apparent as soon as you walk through the parking lot. Don't be surprised if one of the instructors walks by and greets you by name, with a huge smile, and gives your little one a high-five on their way out to the pool deck. Laughter and cheering fills the air. As soon as you begin watching the lessons take place it becomes evident that all of the instructors absolutely love what they do! Seal Swim School prides itself on having something to offer everyone. Depending on what the best learning environment is for your child, group or private lessons are available. In their group classes the ratio is four children to one instructor, this small class size creates a structured, positive and personal situation for your child to learn. Or, if you feel a one-on-one is better suited for your little one, they offer private lessons to tailor to your child’s individualized needs. Classes are taught in sessions of

12 lessons, and by the end of those 12 lessons you will be amazed by the progress and success that your child has made. Just go watch a Seal Swim School lesson. When you stand on the pool deck, be prepared as you might see a one-year-old baby swimming over 8 feet to the pool’s edge, a fouryear-old learning butterfly or even a group of 2½-year-olds learning proper diving technique. Seal prides itself on the success of their students. Just ask one of the teachers or parents if Seal really can teach any child regardless of their fear or personality. "Absolutely!" they will reply without hesitation. Seal can teach anyone how to swim! From the beginner swimmers who are now able to swim independently, to the more advanced swimmers who can swim all four strokes across the pool. The change from day 1 to day 12 is truly something to talk about. One of the parents who has two of their children enrolled had this to say, “I have never been so impressed with a swim school in my life. The staff

is wonderful and very positive! Positive reinforcement is so important and they build on each child’s strengths and work on each child’s individual weaknesses. I love the way they build my children's self-confidence and swimming skills. Just their positive and loving nature towards my children is genuine and so awesome. I am so pleased with the way they teach lifesaving skills to young children!” The instructors use the Seal Swim School techniques that have been developed through 37 years of experience, learning and innovation. Seal Swim School is constantly improving and developing its techniques. Shannon Seal, owner of the North Pinellas location, said, “We will never be complacent with our teaching methods as we understand the importance that growing and learning has to teaching.” Seal Swim School is changing the lives of families that bring their children to their swim school for lessons; there is no challenge too great for them. Seal Swim School creates safer, confident swimmers and also helps give parents another layer

Local Author Pens The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas Series By Julie Kanehl If you have young kids, you know how the bedtime routine can go. The goal is to have a squeaky clean, happy and cuddly youngster ready to sit in your lap for a story before eagerly and excitedly hopping into bed. I mean, we’re excited about the thought of sleeping, why aren’t they? Well, one day a local father of two was wondering the same thing when his son came in to see him dressed head to toe like a firefighter – hat and all, with a book in his hand, saying “I’m ready for bed!” That same father was just about to say, “You can’t wear that to bed,” when he paused and thought, “Why not?” In fact, it spurred an idea that became a book, and that book is well on its way to becoming a popular series of children’s books that puts children right into the story, for each book comes with a matching pair of pajamas! That father is Anthony Pesce, an inspiring young man and married father of two boys. Pesce’s positive attitude and hard work ethic have made him a success in other fields of work, from owning his own car detailing

26

company, to doing marketing and PR for the ceiling repair company that he now owns. Pesce has more than enough to keep himself busy, but he thought that maybe a book that encouraged kids to read before bed, one that would encourage children to chase their dreams, and help with the going-to-bed-routine in the process was a good idea. He was right! Parents and kids agree! Anthony’s real passion is helping families to grow closer and spend quality time together before bed, while encouraging an early love of reading. He praises his wife, Liza, for always reading to their children every night, and believes that books, like his new series, are a great way for children to gain confidence in reading. Pesce says, “Our motto is ‘Dream big and anything can happen!’ Each book comes with a pair of pajamas that matches the ones in the book, and it makes the children feel like they’re part of the story! They get dressed up to go to bed! That’s the key to it. It lets their imagination run wild.” He adds, “It also gives kids insight into other people’s occupations.

They know what their moms and dads do, but they don’t necessarily know what other people do.” The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas series begins with main character, Jacob, who is giving his mother a hard time about getting ready for bed. Well, this smart mom offers Jacob some Magical Pajamas that happen to look like a firefighter’s suit. Jacob, who dreams of becoming a firefighter some day, jumps into his pajamas, races into bed, and is off on an adventure to save the day! This beautifully written children’s book has become a bit of a local sensation, Local father and author Anthony Pesce with his with books and matching wife Liza and their sons who were the inspiration pajamas being sold nearby at The Turtle’s Nest, which behind the book that makes bedtime fun for kids. is in the Trinity Village was excited to see that children of all Center Plaza, as well as on their webages wanted to read it! “Originally, I was only ordering small pajamas, but I’ve had so many children of all ages request pajamas, that now I’m ordering sizes for children up to 10 years old,” Pesce said. Since his first book has come out, Pesce has experienced a lot of success around here, and word is getting out! He’s even been invited to share his story and his passion for young readers at local schools and churches. In fact people from all over are starting to catch on, Pesce just returned from New York City, where he had a popular booth at an Expo there. The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas was

a huge hit in NYC! Pesce says, “I’ve written 13 books in the series, and I have three books going to press right now. It’s exciting! The next three to come out feature a zookeeper, a police officer and a chef.” What a great opportunity for children to put the electronics down and spend quality time, whether parents are doing the reading, or early readers are doing the reading themselves. If you’re looking for a great book that will inspire your children to read, while teaching them about helping others, you’re going to love The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas series! The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas is available to be ordered through their website at www.pajamaadventures.com, as well as from The Turtle’s Nest in the Trinity Village Center Plaza. More adventures are coming, so stay tuned to all the magic happening by liking their Facebook page! Summer is Coming in Hot! Get Your Kids into Camp at YMCA Now! By Katie Thomas One of the best ways to provide a fun, memorable summer for your kids is through a camp program! The North Pinellas Branch of the YMCA of the Suncoast, located within the Lansbrook community of East Lake, has a vast number of camps available for kids from ages three to seventeen. Summer camp programs at the YMCA offer the perfect solution for families who want their kids to stay busy with healthful activities this summer. Summer Camp at the Y not only keeps children active throughout the summer months, but also helps kids to learn self-reliance and other skills, make new friends, have fun and experience a wholesome, well-rounded summer that fosters new interests. Jackie Citarella, Youth Director at YMCA, says, “The YMCA focuses on healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. In everything we do, including our summer camp programs, we try to fuse and focus these three attributes together. We want to instill social responsibility

in the kids, while offering them unique chances to explore new interests and hobbies, while they have a blast all summer long!” Explore This Summer! Kids grow up and develop so quickly; it oftentimes feels as if it happens overnight. YMCA’s Summer Camp programs encourage kids to explore new things, such as cooking, tennis, golfing, swimming and crafting. Summer camps are proven to be a great way for children to find interests and experience personal growth that assists them in becoming wellrounded individuals. Your child can try out numerous activities during the YMCA’s summer program and may find one that they will keep as a hobby for a lifetime! Camps last ten weeks and include the following programs. Learning & Growing Program: This program for ages 3–5 is held three days a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Learning & Growing Program primarily preps kids for pre-kindergarten and is educational, so your child can be well social-

ized and ahead of the game when it is time for them to start school. Adventure Camp: Campers ages 6–10 experience field trips once a week to a local, fun and educational venue. Kids can choose from a variety of activities and will hear interesting guest speakers throughout the program. This year, the SPCA and the Tarpon Springs Aquarium will be visiting to teach animal awareness, along with a bunch of other great speakers. Teen Camp: This camp program

teaches teens social responsibility and gives them a chance to give back to their community, while working as a team. Youth ages 11–14 will take field trips twice a week. The teen camp program places a heavy emphasis on Service Learning Projects, such as building a butterfly garden at a local church. Teen Internship: The teen Internship program is a great training tool for students ages 14–17. Each teen gets the chance to practice interview sessions, monitor and lead kids’

activities, receive CPR training, and are prepared for counselor work. In a fun environment, teens gain experience related to the workforce and are able to gain real-life experience before heading out into the world of work. Activity Focused Camps at the YMCA Kids can choose from the following activity focused camps in order to make their summer more enjoyable while they hone their skills! Many times, the summer camp activities offered at the YMCA leads kids to join sports teams. There is always room to grow at the YMCA! Tennis Aquatic Camp: Created

in responce to parents’ suggestions – camp counselors are very excited to offer Tennis Aquatic Camp this year. This camp blends swimming lessons and tennis lessons, so kids can brush up on their strokes, both in and out of the water! Sports Camp: One of the most popular camps at the YMCA – the kids love it! Sports Camp touches on a great variety of sports so kids have the option to find their niche and what they truly love participating in. The Sports Camp at the Y also gives camp leaders the chance to get an idea of what leagues they should incorporate throughout the year. Golf Camp: Campers are pro-

vided with lessons from a golf professional at Lansbrook Golf Course, which is right across the street. Kids will learn about golf course etiquette and will be able to perfect their skills in the great game of golf. Equipment is provided, and with the YMCA’s summer program you can give the gift of golf to your child. Tennis Camp: Campers will learn from and practice with tennis professional Robert Carlbo, named PTR Professional of the Year in 2013 by the Professional Tennis Registry. Robert is one of the leading tennis professionals in the country and truly enjoys teaching the kids during summer camp. Art Camp, Cooking Camp and Passion for Fashion Camp: YMCA also offers camps that revolve around assisting kids in exploring their creative sides. Cooking Camp allows kids to learn how to feed themselves healthy, delicious meals and they even get to use herbs and vegetables out of the YMCA’s volunteer garden! Art Camp assists your child in their creative abilities, whether it is painting, jewelry making, sculpting or another crafty talent. Passion for Fashion Camp allows kids to explore designing clothes, shoes and purses. The Passion for Fashion Camp assists the kids in learning couture on a budget! Parents Absolutely Love YMCA Summer Camps! Sabrina Bitts says, “I love the YMCA summer camps not only for the fun camp activities but because of the positive environment, dedicated,

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

caring staff and the reinforcement of life lessons. In addition to the physical activity all kids need, they hear a message supporting values of respect, sportsmanship and leadership.” Parents can become members of the YMCA themselves, so while their kids play they can get their workout in. If parents are interested in volunteering at camp, the YMCA makes it super easy. Debbie Bechtel says, “My kids LOVE summer camp at the North Pinellas YMCA! They have a ton of fun playing and swimming with all of their friends. And since the Y is where we workout, we know most of the YMCA staff on a first-name basis, so I know my kids are safe and feel at home there. Plus, it’s so close and convenient. It’s definitely a win-win for our family!” Financial Assistance: If finances are keeping you from signing your child up for camp, contact the YMCA directly and ask about financial assistance. Many camps provide scholarships to families in need. YMCA of the Suncoast wants to make sure all children can enjoy the summer, and offers financial assistance to those who qualify. The North Pinellas Branch of the YMCA of the Suncoast is located in Palm Harbor at 4550 Village Center Drive in the Lansbrook community of East Lake. Hours are Mon. – Fri., 5 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Sat., 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.; and 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sun. “Trinity Family” Continued from page 1 make a difference. I have personally been a patient of theirs for many years, and am so pleased with the kind of care that they provide. When I’m sick and need to be seen quickly, I can always get an appointment, and when I am there, I always feel like family. Honestly, when I needed tests because we were worried we’d found something scary; they jumped right into action, ordered the right tests, followed up, and helped me celebrate when the results were clear. Wellness, Prevention & Healthcare Most of the time, when you go to a doctor, they tell you the typical things – it’s either, “you need a prescription,” or “it’s just a virus go back to bed,” or maybe “lay off the ice cream.” But, what about when, you, as a patient, have concerns, goals, wishes? Are you bringing those to your doctor’s attention? Do you want to learn how to lose weight the healthy way? Do you want to know why you have acne at 35? Do you wish you actually knew what those

34

blood pressure numbers meant when the nurse read them off to you after every physical? Because so many of us are so busy, we’ve stopped going to the doctor for preventive or wellness care, and that’s a mistake. Only going to your doctor when you need an antibiotic doesn’t allow them to look at your overall health and wellness. At Trinity Family Physicians, their goals are your goals – a healthier, happier you. Did you know that most insurance companies offer at least one free physical a year? That’s right! That’s the perfect time to make a list, come in, and meet with the doctors. It’s a good time to take a look at the medication that you’re taking, both prescription and over the counter, and to discuss the reasons why. In fact, the

doctors at Trinity Family Physicians are doing their best to meet with their patients during their well-visit to discuss ways to eliminate or at least decrease prescription medicines where possible, and to see if there’s an herbal supplement that may be safer and easier on your body to take. Have you ever asked your doctor for a supplement or a vitamin? If not, you should! Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo are proud to offer options to their patients and for many people, supplements and vitamins can do a lot of amazing things to help medical concerns naturally. Historically, people have been using herbs and essential oils to help with medical maladies since the beginning of time, and originally that’s what most of our medi-

cines were made of. Today, however, many medicines are a cocktail of chemicals that can help to treat a problem, but can also cause a myriad of side effects in the process. The doctors’ expertise is in determining what kind of medicine to prescribe, and to weigh those risks with each patient. While prescription medicine is important and necessary, there’s a trend among many patients to ask for less prescription medicine if there are alternatives. That’s why Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo are proud to announce a new line of supplements at their office that can help with everything from losing weight to lowering your blood pressure – naturally and safely. Dr. Shirmo says, “It’s important

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

to us to provide customized healthcare to our patients, and to offer our patients choices when possible. That’s why we’ve decided to offer supplements, which can either be taken instead of some medicines, or taken in conjunction with some medicines to enhance them to yield a positive result.” He adds, “But it’s also important to know where those supplements come from, which is why we’ve chosen NutraMetrix, because it’s a U.S. Company, where all of the components are made in the U.S. and physicians are in charge of the quality control of the product. It’s a product we trust, and it’s a product we take.” Offering general vitamins for overall wellness, sleep aids, heart health, safe weight management, help for vision and more, the NutraMetrix line is well-known and respected, and has created safe supplements to help you live a healthier life, with the idea that you won’t actually have to go to the doctor as often! That’s okay with the doctors at Trinity Family Physicians! They want you to be well, and when you’re not, they will be there to help. Using all of the tools that they can, Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo want to strategize with you for your

overall healthcare, help you meet the goals that you have, and encourage you to live a healthy lifestyle. Another way that Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo like to reach out to help is by sharing important information and tips, so they encourage their patients to “like” and visit their facebook page. There, they let people know if there’s a virus outbreak in the neighborhood, if the flu shots are available, and they also give helpful tools to incorporate wellness into your life. The Trinity Family Physicians want to take care of you so that you can get back out there and live your best life. Make an appointment, and let their family take care of your family. They take very good care of mine! Trinity Family Physicians is located at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd., at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Ste. 101. “Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 in the nation that offer an individualized program that includes nutrution, sensory motor coaching and academic skill improvement. Employing Florida Certified Teachers who have impressive resumes in the fields of Behavioral Sciences and Exceptional Education, Brain Balance takes a “brain-based, not drug based” approach. Brain Balance is an education facility, not a medical facility, and they make it a lot of fun for kids to come, play, grow and change! A Balanced Brain is a Successful Brain! The Brain Balance program comes directly from Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, is a worldrenowned neurologist, professor and author who strongly believes that all of these conditions, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.” Children who are diagnosed with any of these conditions, actually have healthy brains! In fact, in his book, Disconnected Kids, Dr. Melillo ex-

36

plains that if you were to take a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. Their brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “left-brained” or “rightbrained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues, which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The Brain Balance here in Oldsmar is actually owned by Director Larry Polnicky, who wanted to find answers for his own son Ben, who has autism. The Polnicky family wanted a solution that didn’t require medication, and while the closest Brain Balance Center was hours away, they were so impressed with the program that they even moved for a time to be closer to it. Their experience with the Brain Balance program was so powerful that he and his wife decided to bring the op-

portunity to other families in our area. Larry says, “This summer is a wonderful time for parents to choose a program, like ours, that will change their child’s life.” Brain Balance offers programs all year long, and this summer they are inviting families to consider enrolling their child in a program that can honestly change lives for the better! Children who enroll in the program are usually between 5 and 18 years old, and they may have been given a “label” by a school or even a pediatrician. The staff at Brain Balance doesn’t really believe in labels, instead, they set to work using their own expert assessments and proven evaluations to find any deficiencies. Then, they develop an individualized program that is purposeful, helpful and best of all, fun! Sharing Sammy’s Success! Sammy was diagnosed as severely autistic as a child, but today he doesn’t seem to be much different than any other child his age. When he walks into the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa, he walks in like he owns the place! Everyone knows him by his name and his eager smile. While he comes here specifically for the Brain Balance program from Ottawa, Canada, Sammy has a passion for

Tatiana travels from Ottawa, Canada to bring her son Sammy to Brain Balance Center of Tampa maps and could probably tell you more about this area than anyone else. He’s read more books than most 13year-old boys, and his sense of humor is nothing short of charming. Of course, it didn’t start out that way. Sammy was non-verbal and in diapers until he was five years old. His mother, Tatiana, who used to be a biochemist, was determined to get to the root of the problem without using dangerous medicines to do it. When she read Dr. Melillo’s book, she knew she’d found the answer, and today, Sammy is finishing his fourth round of

the Brain Balance program. When asked why she comes all the way down to Florida to have Sammy participate in the Brain Balance program, Tatiana says, “It’s worth every single penny, what they do here. What is six months compared to real life changes in your child?” On paper, his progress is significant, but Sammy is more than a label, more than a prognosis. He’s a growing boy with an incredible future ahead of him. The difference shows, but you don’t have to take it from anyone else. Sammy says, “When I started, I had low functioning autism, and I wasn’t very social. I had limited inter-

ests and very few friends. Now I’m high functioning, I’m social more and I take more interest in things, and I’m making more friends.” If you have a child who struggles with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Processing Disorders, or even Autism, call the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa. on Monday, May 26, Memorial Day, the Silver Sound of East Lake High School will represent Florida and participate in the National Memorial Day Parade on Historic Constitution Avenue. Of course, being part of such an amazing experience comes with a cost. Each member of the band is required to raise $800 for 2 days bus travel, 2 meals/day and lodging for the 4-day/3-night stay. This is a hard-earned and exciting opportunity for these students and any help that the community can provide will be tremendously appreciated. Any amount will help! If you are able, please donate via PayPal through the band website, www.eastlakeband.com – just click on the Memorial Day Parade. Every donation helps, big or small and is taxdeductible. You can sponsor a specific band member, or donate to the trip in general. And, don’t forget to attend the Patriotic and Spring Concerts being performed at East Lake High School on May 17. About the National Memorial Day Parade: The annual National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. exists to pay tribute to

America’s Veterans and our Honored War Dead from the Revolutionary War to Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. In 2004, the parade returned to Washington, D.C. after a 60-year absence in order to coincide with the dedication of the National World War II Memorial. The outpouring of appreciation to the veterans of World War II spilled over to veterans of the more recent conflicts as well. The National Park Service, the American Veterans Committee, and Music Celebrations International are the sponsors of the parade. The parade route is on historic Constitution Avenue, between 7th and 17th Streets. An audience of hundreds of thousands of spectators is anticipated. The theme of the 2014 parade is centered on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings. Parade participants will include military units, marching bands, veterans groups, military vehicles, flag teams, and many other exciting and colorful units. Large patriotic floats and helium-filled balloons will also be a part of procession. Find more information or donate at eastlakeband.com.

Discover Entrepreneurial Education Pinellas Career Academies are not your same old public school specialty programs. East Lake High School Engineering Academy grows entrepreneurs, the next generation of TEDx trailblazers who learn, think, invent, and re-engineer. Imagine innovators like Richard Branson, Bill Gates, and Dean Kamen. Now imagine if they all attended the same high school career academy taught by a wealth of inspirational teachers. East Lake’s Engineering Academy pairs passionate professional engineers, scientists, and CEOs with tenacious, skill-absorbing, technology-loving teenagers. The academy creator is entrepreneur Paul Wahnish. If you know him it’s not surprising that his not-for-profit, Career Technical Education Foundation, has created a world with a half million dollar, hands-on technology lab for 14 – 18 year olds. It hosts a cyber security club that doubles membership each year, and a robotics club that creates a new $20,000 robot each year for international competition. These opportunities unleashed the entrepreneurial spirit in Jason

Wilkinson, Shea Akerman, and Jason Williams. They are the winners of the $10,000 “Next Generation Entrepreneur” grant from Pinellas Education Foundation and FairWarning®. The students created a universal soldering attachment that allows one person with two hands to hold three things: a soldering iron, solder wire, and the metal piece being repaired. The “Next Generation Entrepreneur” grant was explained during a school assembly. The grant allows high school student teams to submit innovative ideas that can grow into a business. Out of 60 applications, 10 semifinalists are chosen to attend entrepreneur class. Presentation skills and an on-camera presence is cultivated at Home Shopping Network, business skills like generating a recurring income is taught at FairWarning®’s Clearwater headquarters, and tackling sales and legal aspects of a new business is explained by the Pinellas Education Foundation. Teams make presentations to a panel of judges along with a formal Business Plan.

The Wilkinson, Akerman, and Williams team was chosen as one of three finalists. They set up a demonstration booth at the Career Education awards ceremony rubbing elbows with the county’s most innovative career educators. The team agrees the win has significantly influenced their career direction. What happens next: FairWarning® CEO, Kurt Long, will mentor their entrepreneurial journey as the students launch their first company, and then patent and market their device. How will this work when they all go away to different colleges? Next fall Wilkinson heads to Kettering University in Flint, Michigan to study and intern in electrical engineering; “Rocket man” Akerman goes to Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne to major in

aerospace; Williams is attending Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland to pursue his electrical engineering passion. The 18 year-olds say they are committed to three things: college, internship experiences, and being entrepreneurs. Their teamwork is inspiring. “I would not have come up with all the

defects to develop the best design by myself,” says Wilkinson. Their first product went through several designs before they made their first CAD (computer-aided design) drawing. Multiple prototypes were created in a 3-D printer as they experimented on how to use the new device. With their mentor’s help they plan to market their solder invention to hobbyists. They also discovered an industrial interest. Impressively, their goals go beyond supplying this one product. They plan to continue finding problems to

solve, and they look forward to collaborating on new ideas together through their new company. Paul Wahnish reflected on his students’ entrepreneurial abilities, “The things that matter most in education do not come from books but from the creative minds of our children and the educators who allow them the freedom to discover.” Take a real-world problem, couple it with imagination; support it with skills and state-of-the-art technology. This achievement makes us all believers.
