Brain Balance Achievement Centers have changed the way that children who face learning challenges become successful. The proven strategies used are completely customized to your child and help them to exercise their brains, the way we exercise our bodies! Brain Balance helps children who have ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities or Processing Disorders, to work beyond those challenges and become
more successful socially, developmentally and cognitively. More children are diagnosed with a learning, cognitive or processing disorder every day, and modern medicine’s only approach thus far has been for children to take pills that have numerous side effects. Brain Balance Achievement Centers take a whole-child approach that is personalized and focused on finding the
root cause, instead of masking the symptoms. For parents who have children who struggle with these issues, Brain Balance offers more than a program, it offers proven results. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa, located at 4022 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, is one of more than 50 Brain Balance Centers See “Brain Balance” on page 30.

Matt Selby We have BIG NEWS that we think many of our readers will have an interest in. Especially our baseball fans out there. We recently entered into a partnership with the Tampa Bay Rays and they offered us season tickets for 6 people. This includes hundreds of tickets for the season and although we are a family business with tons of family and friends here in the Bay area who are huge Rays fans, there is no possible way we can make it to every single game. Obviously we don’t want these prime, press level tickets going to waste and who better to share them with than you, so we came up with a contest to give our loyal readers AND advertisers a chance to win big with tickets to go see the Rays. Each month, starting in May and ending in September, we will give away multiple press level (sec.204) Rays’ tickets to 5 lucky winners. One Grand Prize winner per month will receive 6 tickets and 2 parking passes.

Community News Briefs North Tampa Girl Scout Troops Send 100 Boxes of Cookies to Sailors Aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71)
Girl Scout Junior Troops 2500 and 135 of north Tampa recently sent 100 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies to sailors aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) to thank them for their service to our country. Pictured are sailors aboard the aircraft carrier holding the troops’ special delivery. The Girl Scout troops, comprised of 17 girls in grades 4-5, sent the cookies to the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) because they were inspired by one of its sailors they met at a Girl Scout Cookie booth earlier this year. In a letter to the Girl Scouts, the sailors thanked them for the cookies and said, “It is nice to know that the youth of today acknowledges the sacrifices the men and women of the Armed Forces are making every day.” Photo credit: Photo taken and submitted by the operations department aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71).

charming addition to downtown Dunedin’s bar life. In no time, House of Beer became one of the most popular locales to visit and was soon expanding their services, opening the Palm Harbor House of Beer. This quick growth all happened in 2009 and 2010, leading up to the opening of Citrus Park House of Beer. Managers Mike Bell and Jeremy Denny choose the best in staff for the Citrus Park House of Beer. During my visit each employee I spoke with had superior knowledge about different beer tastes, the breweries each brew was from and suggestions that suit your palate. Not only are the bartenders highly knowledgeable, they are craft beer enthusiasts themselves, so they enjoy helping you find what you are going to love! Mike Bell has traveled across the country experiencing and finding craft beers and has watched the craft beer scene grow over the past ten years. He traveled in his RV for a while to every

The result of all his hard work and research is phenomenal; a comfortable and fun atmosphere that flows cohesively with the delicious beer flow! “My wife’s friend told her about Medi-Weightloss Clinics,” says Joseph Alvarez, Director of Operations for Boston Market. “After several failed attempts at other diets, I had little hope that this one would work. Boy was I wrong. I lost 13 pounds the first week! This kept me motivated to keep trying, and week after week I kept losing more weight. In just 5 months, I reached my goal of 80 pounds lost. I feel great! I went from a size 44 to 36. My overall health has improved dramatically. My doctor cut my blood pressure medication in half and took me off of my cholesterol medication completely. I have more energy to play with my kids and my golf game is a lot better. Now, almost 5 years later, I am still maintaining my weight loss. I could not have achieved this goal if it wasn’t for the motivation and support I received and still receive from the staff at MediWeightloss Clinics. The doctors and nurses at the Lutz location are always motivating and are a huge help. They taught me how to live a healthy lifestyle despite my busy work schedule. They showed me that the options at Boston Market were great and even put together meal options there that would fit with my eating plan.” At your initial consultation at

Offers Summer Camps and Specialty Camps for Pasco Students in 2014 By Dara Tucker PLACE (Pasco Learning and Activity Centers of Enrichment) is well known for providing a school age before and after school activity program operated by the District School Board of Pasco County. The before and after program is designed to provide an active and enriching environment for children who must arrive at school early, stay late, and/or require supervised activities on most school holidays. Participation is limited to elementary children, age kindergarten through fifth grade. The school cafeteria and outside play areas are utilized for PLACE activities. Supervision is provided by school board staff at a

ratio of one adult to 25 children. The number of children enrolled at each site is determined by the special limitations and number of staff employed. The staff strive to meet the social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the child in an environment that fosters positive self-esteem, initiative, independence, problem-solving, creativity, safety awareness, sense of security, self-control, community involvement, and environmental awareness. For the first time, PLACE is offering two different types of summer camps – Camp Quest and Camp WOW!. PLACE Doesn’t Stop When School Does! Camp WOW! runs consecutively
starting the first week of summer to the week before school starts from 6:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m. This camp is designed for students who need care throughout the whole summer in an enriching environment. High interest themes and field trips (such as swimming, roller skating, bowling, and movie day) take place during the camp, and age specific curriculum keep students involved in hands-on learning challenges and projects. Weekly themes include Adventures in Art, Geology and Gems, PBS, Space Invaders, Raiders of the Lost Artifact, Ocean Commotion, Tampa Bay Sports, Kids Kitchen, and Splish Splash. In Adventures in Art students will find their creative talents put to use as they learn about the different elements and mediums in art. These age-specific projects include how to draw in perspective, use of color and shape, three-dimensional sculpture, and painting bisque clay. Students end the week with a gallery walk of their displayed art. During the week of Geol-

ogy and Gems campers will study and even create different crystals, “rocks,” and stalactites. Mining and erosion are discussed as students try to mine chocolate chips out of cookies. Depending on the campers’ age some will explore tectonics, while others will take simulations of fossil core samples or get down and dirty as they experiment with how to create the best flowing rivers. During the summer students will experience Huck’s Lost Mine from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students will each have their own bag of gems to pan through looking for treasure in true mining style. During the weeks of PBS and

Space Invaders, PLACE partnered with local PBS affiliates and favorite PBS Kids show creators as well NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Educational Department. Depending on their age, campers will use foundational reading skills with Super Why super heroes, apply math and science skills with CyberChase challenges, and older students put what they know to use as they create inventions with Design Squad Nation. Interested 4th and 5th grade students who love to mentor younger children can also be trained to be a Martha Speaks Reading Buddy and work weekly with a kindergartner or first grader on the highly successful PBS reading buddy initiative. To prepare for Space Invaders

week NASA’s Educational Department are training a PLACE employee at each site on NASA’s latest interactive curriculum allowing students to learn about space exploration. Raiders of the Lost Artifact has kids digging for “fossils” and learning about archeology, while in Ocean Commotion different age groups test model surfboards they create, have boat races, and create miniature submarines. Tampa Bay Sports week has students going on a field trip to see the Tampa Bay Rays play ball – a highlight of the camp. Little chefs will love Kids Kitchen, which allows students to create kid friendly food and even serve it to their fellow campers in a mock restaurant the last day that week. During the dog days of summer Splish Splash is a great way for kids to cool down and have a silly time with water play. Camp Quest is a new two week
half day (9 a.m.-noon) specialty camp for 3rd – 5th graders. The camps will meet at Rushe Middle School, and are focused on students’ areas of interest. During June 16 – June 27 and again July 14 – July 25 students can choose between Sports (tennis or golf) or 3D Art camp, and June 30 – July11, and again July 28 – August 8 students can decide between the Culinary Arts or Robotics camp. Experienced leaders in their specialized field help make Camp Quest a high quality camp experience for kids. In Sports camp the students are coached by a tennis or golf professional. The 3-D Art camp – where students will create a stop animation video, a clay sculpture, and cast a three-dimensional sculpture from a mold – is taught by a certified art teacher. The Culinary Arts camp is taught by the Land O’ Lakes High School’s Culinary Academy’s Chef and the Robotics camp is through
Brick Buddies Junior Lego League. Camp registration for PLACE Camp WOW! starts April 14. Camp WOW! is $60 a week per child, with a $20 yearly camp registration fee per child. The fun of summer continues throughout the school year with PLACE’s before and after school program. Students are provided a safe, supervised environment where they play outside, choose from a variety of high interest centers, and put what they learn during the school day into practice during discovery activities where they create, explore, and design. Pacific Curbing “Enhance Your Garden Design with Concrete Curbing”
By Marcy Sanford Does your landscaping need a facelift? Are weeds and rundown borders ruining the look of your home or business? Concrete curbing is an easy, cost-effective way to update your yard or landscaping. Besides looking beau-
tiful, there are many benefits to concrete curbing. Pacific Curbing, the area’s leading company for decorative concrete landscape curbing, can help you create a look you will love that will also enhance your landscaping. “Concrete curbing is more economical and more durable than tradi-
tional borders,” says Pacific Curbing Owner Miryana Long. “Concrete curbing will not move around like bricks do; it will not rot like wood does; and it won’t break like plastic will. Once we have installed concrete curbing for you, it will last for at least 7 years. When it starts to fade a bit, a simple reseal is all that is needed to bring back the original color.” Flexible Shape: While you might not think of flexibility when you think of concrete, concrete curbing is actually more flexible than traditional borders. It can be shaped to contain any area. You don’t have to worry about trying to make bricks fit or trying to bend plastic. If you want curves, Pacific Curbing can give you curves. If you want straight lines, they can easily
do that as well. Pacific Curbing will adjust the border to whatever shape or size you want. Once Pacific Curbing has finished your project, you’ll have an attractive border edging that enhances your landscaping and serves as a weed and grass barrier. Pacific Curbing can install concrete curbing around trees, flowerbeds, and sidewalks. Really there is no limit to what Pacific Curbing can do, if you have an area that needs curbing, they can help you out. Each job is custom mixed and poured on site so that you can create an original border to fit your unique style. Beautiful Patterns: Pacific Curbing can apply a wide variety of patterns and stamps to create a unique and custom curb just or you.
Stamped borders can be made to look like brick or stone. Rollers can be made to look like wood or slate. The possibilities are endless. Custom Colors: Pacific Curbing can also create a wide variety of colors for you. From calm blues to natural browns, elegant reds to traditional buffs, Pacific Curbing can help you create a look to enhance your house, business, and landscaping. With the beautiful color options at Pacific Curbing, you’re sure to find a color to match your home’s exterior or add a beautiful contrast to your existing

color scheme. Newest Looks: Pacific Curbing has also just introduced one of the newest trends in concrete curbing: Belgium Block. Pacific Curbing is the only company in the area to offer this elegant option. Professional Care: Pacific Curbing’s professional crew will not hurt or mess up your yard or current landscaping. Most jobs can be finished in one day and you’re sure to be pleased with the results. “We were delighted with the work Pacific Curbing did for our con-
dominium complex. They enclosed approximately 600 feet of landscaping. We love the way it looks,” says Pacific Curbing Client Liz Almond. “They did an excellent job. Throughout the project they kept the work site clean and did not mess up any existing landscaping. All our residents love the way it looks. Pacific Curbing’s employees were so professional that we didn’t hear any complaints from our residents during the time the work was being done.” Give Pacific Curbing a call today to find out how they can help you add
value to your property and enhance the look of your home or business. Miryana will come to your house or business and give you a free estimate and consultation about the best curbing solution for your needs. “Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 in the nation that offer an individualized program that includes nutrution, sensory motor coaching and academic skill improvement. Employing Florida Certified Teachers who have impressive resumes in the fields of Behavioral Sciences and Exceptional Education, Brain Balance takes a “brain-based, not drug based” approach. Brain Balance is an education facility, not a medical facility, and they make it a lot of fun for kids to come, play, grow and change! A Balanced Brain is a Successful Brain! The Brain Balance program comes directly from Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, is a worldrenowned neurologist, professor and author who strongly believes that all of these conditions, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.” Children who are diagnosed with any of these conditions, actually have healthy brains! In fact, in his book, Disconnected Kids, Dr. Melillo ex-
30
plains that if you were to take a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. Their brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “left-brained” or “rightbrained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues, which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The Brain Balance here in Oldsmar is actually owned by Director Larry Polnicky, who wanted to find answers for his own son Ben, who has autism. The Polnicky family wanted a solution that didn’t require medication, and while the closest Brain Balance Center was hours away, they were so impressed with the program that they even moved for a time to be closer to it. Their experience with the Brain Balance program was so powerful that he and his wife decided to bring the op-
portunity to other families in our area. Larry says, “This summer is a wonderful time for parents to choose a program, like ours, that will change their child’s life.” Brain Balance offers programs all year long, and this summer they are inviting families to consider enrolling their child in a program that can honestly change lives for the better! Children who enroll in the program are usually between 5 and 18 years old, and they may have been given a “label” by a school or even a pediatrician. The staff at Brain Balance doesn’t really believe in labels, instead, they set to work using their own expert assessments and proven evaluations to find any deficiencies. Then, they develop an individualized program that is purposeful, helpful and best of all, fun! Sharing Sammy’s Success! Sammy was diagnosed as severely autistic as a child, but today he doesn’t seem to be much different than any other child his age. When he walks into the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa, he walks in like he owns the place! Everyone knows him by his name and his eager smile. While he comes here specifically for the Brain Balance program from Ottawa, Canada, Sammy has a passion for

Tatiana travels from Ottawa, Canada to bring her son Sammy to Brain Balance Center of Tampa maps and could probably tell you more about this area than anyone else. He’s read more books than most 13year-old boys, and his sense of humor is nothing short of charming. Of course, it didn’t start out that way. Sammy was non-verbal and in diapers until he was five years old. His mother, Tatiana, who used to be a biochemist, was determined to get to the root of the problem without using dangerous medicines to do it. When she read Dr. Melillo’s book, she knew she’d found the answer, and today, Sammy is finishing his fourth round of

the Brain Balance program. When asked why she comes all the way down to Florida to have Sammy participate in the Brain Balance program, Tatiana says, “It’s worth every single penny, what they do here. What is six months compared to real life changes in your child?” On paper, his progress is significant, but Sammy is more than a label, more than a prognosis. He’s a growing boy with an incredible future ahead of him. The difference shows, but you don’t have to take it from anyone else. Sammy says, “When I started, I had low functioning autism, and I wasn’t very social. I had limited inter-

Now I’m high functioning, I’m social more and I take more interest in things, and I’m making more friends.” If you have a child who struggles with Dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, Processing Disorders, or even Autism, call the Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa.
