Meet the Doctors “Orthodontics is about correcting every patient’s bite, when possible, which protects your teeth, allows them to function as they were intended to, and protects them, allowing them to stay healthier and last longer,” says Dr. Albert. “To the patients, though, the aesthetic improvement is always their favorite part. We can correct your smile, and it will last forever.” Dr. Jeremy Albert is a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. A graduate (with honors) of The University of Florida’s College of Dentistry, he also completed his Orthodontic Residency, received his Or-

Jeremy Albert DMD, MS, and Ernest McDowell, DMD, have shared a practice in Palm Harbor, at the corner of U.S. Hwy. 19 and Tampa Rd. for nearly a decade. Getting Started The doctors at Albert & McDowell Orthodontics encourage parents to bring in their children for a free consultation as early as seven Dr. Ernest years old. At that McDowell age they can begin to see how the teeth are aligning in the mouth and can give families a heads-up on what their child may need as far as orthodontics when they are teenagers and their permanent teeth are coming in.

thodontics Certificate, and earned his Master’s of Science Degree from UF. Interestingly enough, Dr. Albert first thought about going into the field of dentistry while he was getting his own orthodontic work done when he was being treated by Dr. Ernest McDowell, who was just beginning his career in orthodontics at the time. Throughout his years at school, Dr. Albert kept in touch with Dr. McDowell, and when he got out of school, he had the opportunity to begin working with Dr. McDowell at each of his practices, including this one, which later became Albert & McDowell Orthodontics. Dr. Ernest McDowell earned his B.A. in Biology from The University of South Florida in 1981, and graduated from The University of Florida’s College of Dentistry in 1985. He continued his education for two more years at the University of Louisville’s College of Dentistry, where he graduated with honors. After completing his Residency as an Orthodontic Specialist, he became a Board Certified Orthodontist in 1996. Dr. Albert says, “Dr. McDowell and I have very similar approaches to the way that we handle orthodontics. We make a good team, and while we establish one of us as the primary orthodontist for each patient throughout their treatment, it is always nice for patients to know that there is another doctor here, involved with their treatment as well and for us, it’s a chance for us to work together and collaborate.”

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Will a Hurricane Come? Will this be the year that Tampa Bay gets slammed by Mother Nature? That is the big question every year as hurricane season rolls in. And, the answer is, at least as I’m writing this, who knows? Fire Chief Tom Jamison gives some great advice (see pg. 4) about what to do to prepare for a hurricane and what to do in case one is bearing down. As someone who has ran from several hurricanes, I can tell you the number one thing – don’t wait until one is bearing down on you to leave! The problem with hurricanes is that you just can’t trust their number – a Cat. 1 storm can morph into a Cat. 2 in minutes, or a Cat. 2 into a Cat. 3, and so on. Many times, the storm will strengthen right before it slams into land. So, follow the preparedness guidelines, available at the fire department, pay heed to Chief Jamison’s advice, and don’t hesitate to leave. And, my personal advice is to put your family photos in a box or on a flash drive that you can carry with you. A hurri-

cane is no force to be reckoned with! Prior to moving to this part of the state, my husband and I started our family up in the Panhandle. We built a house on St. George Island and 13 years later, I still miss that view! We were in the Panhandle for ten years and living there, we experienced quite a few storms. My husband traveled a lot for work then and inevitably, every time a storm came he was far away. When even a tropical storm came, we left the island and would stay at my sister’s house in Apalachicola because at that time no one could trust the aging bridge not to be washed out. During one such storm that did develop into a Category 1 hurricane, I lay on the floor at my sister’s unable to sleep as I listened to the wind howling and the weather radio, hearing the report of three tornadoes hitting St. George Island. When we were able to return, I saw the path that one of them took – winding around my home and my two closest neighbors, snapping off trees on the vacant lots

around us. We were all so fortunate to only lose a few shingles. The biggest scare of my life was in September 1995, when hurricane Opal destroyed a good part of the Panhandle east of Panama City Beach. At that time we were building our home and renting a tiny house at Indian Pass Beach, where my sister and her family were also renting. Her husband decided to stay and help his dad who was in the National Guard. So, the two of us, with three babies and two dogs in tow, decided to wait for other family members to leave and travel together. Never again! Waves crashed over my SUV as we left Apalachicola, and while we were on it, the local radio station announced that the Apalachicola bridge was closed. We were terrified. Evacuating from here will be much more difficult because there are a lot more people here. Hopefully we have a mild season, but you never know. If not, don’t wait!

Pool and Water Safety By Tom Jamison, Fire Chief, East Lake Fire Rescue Summer is right around the corner and our families will be enjoying the area's wonderful beaches, lakes, and swimming pools. East Lake Fire Rescue wants to remind everyone to have fun, but be safe. Florida loses more children under age five to drowning than any other state. The overwhelming majority of those drownings occur in private swimming pools. Just as tragic as drowning, near drowning can cause brain injuries resulting in a lifetime of medical care. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe: * Create layers of protection if you own a pool (fencing, childproof gate, etc.). * Constantly supervise the chil-

dren who are in or near water and keep them within reach. Limit distractions which may interfere with supervision. * Limit access from inside the home. Use childproof door locks and door alarms. * Limit access from outside the home: Use locked self-latching self-closing gates and pool safety fences. Keep furniture away from the safety fence to discourage kids from climbing over. Hot tubs should have a locking cover. * Keep the pool area free of trip hazards. Keep toys and floating objects out of the pool. Maintain the water level three to four inches from the top. Use pool covers when the pool isn't in use. Place a wave alarm in the pool. * Enroll in swim lessons and make sure family members can swim too.

Always swim with a buddy and make sure children are never left unattended. Use life jackets for swimmers still learning, but don't rely on these alone. Establish rules for play areas, ensuring drains and suction fittings are off limits. * Teach children to always ask permission to swim. East Lake Fire Rescue personnel are available to perform a pool safety survey "free of charge." Contact us to schedule an appointment at (727) 784-8668. For further information and resources on pool and water safety, contact the Florida Suncoast Safe Kids Coalition led by All Children's Hospital at flsafepools@gmail.com or go tohttp://flsafepools.com/about. Let's not meet by accident!

It's Hurricane Season - Are you prepared? By: Tom Jamison, Fire Chief, East Lake Fire Rescue

Hurricane Season begins on June 1st and continues until December 1st. We have seen what large powerful hurricanes are capable of with Andrew in 1992, Charley in 2004 and Katrina in 2005; these stand out as stark examples. It is imperative that you and your family are prepared should we be threatened by a hurricane. Here are some things you should do. Be informed. Know your evacuation zone. Stay tuned to local news; get a weather radio. Know where the evacuation routes and shelters are located. Have an evacuation kit prepared. If an evacuation of your location is not mandated, and you are choosing to shelter in place, have a survival kit prepared. Understand the "cone" reference and the difficulties of completely accurate prediction of a storm's path. If an evacuation is mandated for your location, evacuate! Most deaths occur from the

storm surge, and once it begins, you may not be able to escape. Have an emergency plan in place. Prepare a document checklist of important papers to take with you if you evacuate. Do what you can prior to the storm season to harden your home for wind damage: Brace the garage door, protect the windows and strengthen the gable ends of your roof. Prepare your home as the storm approaches by shuttering windows (taping them does not work) and securing any loose items outside the home that could become projectiles. Pinellas County has some good resources available for hurricane preparedness. "Surviving The Storm It's Everyone's Responsibility" is the official hurricane guide for Pinellas County. These guides are available at your local fire station, or you can contact the county at www.pinellascounty.org or (727) 464-3000. If you need additional information or have questions regarding your evacuation level, evacuation

shelters, or general preparation, please contact us at (727) 7848668. Artists’ Faire Gallery Announces Art-Leasing Program Artists’ Faire Gallery and Gift Shop, located at 111 E. Tarpon Ave. in Tarpon Springs announces an art-leasing program. Artworks by many of its gallery artists will be available to local businesses and homeowners on a three-month rental basis. where your pain is coming from and then helping you to go through the steps necessary to begin your healing process and establish a plan to keep control of life’s aches and pains. Whether you are hurting from a sports injury, car accident or just have pain from sitting or being on your feet too long, Boot Ranch Chiropractic Center can help you ease the uncomfortable stiffness you may be feeling. A lot of discomfort is related to the spine, and through postural work much of the discomfort a person is having can be minimized. Stress is a huge reason many of us get achy feeling or shooting pain up the neck. The tension that everyday life can sometimes throw our way makes its way into our necks, shoulders, backs and even our limbs; making it harder to sleep at night and ultimately causing more stiffness. Dr. Ruskin will evaluate your symptoms, perform x-rays if needed and offer you chiropractic care that is sure to help you ease your pain and enhance your lifestyle. Along with complete chiropractic care, Boot Ranch Chiropractic Center combines massage techniques that relax the muscles in order for overall healing. Therapeutic massage combined

with chiropractic care allows Boot Ranch Chiropractic Center to “cover the gamut” and ensure total body care for all patients. Licensed Massage Therapists Cheryl Putnam and Ray Boucher are the massage therapists at Boot Ranch Chiropractic. Dr. Ruskin will determine whether therapeutic massage is right for your personal treatment plan and refer you to one of the therapists if needed for direct service. You also can choose to just stop in and get a wonderful massage for some relaxation. Cheryl and Ray specialize in deep tissue, therapeutic, neuromuscular and relaxation massage techniques and are able to meet with clients interested in their services at Boot Ranch Chiropractic Center. Cheryl says, “Massage and chiropractic have a symbiotic relationship with one another. Both are so important to one another because many spinal injuries cause soft tissue damage; therapeutic massage can ease the muscles and tissues back into working order.” Dr. Ruskin, Cheryl and Ray accommodate patients in a way that allows themselves and the patient time between each appointment, so there is no rush felt for you to leave as soon as

Shatter Your Perspective of Church at The Chapel in Tarpon Springs By Julie Kanehl The Chapel Community Church is a non-denominational Christian Church that has become very popular with local residents for its combination of modern and classical Christian elements, its commitment to family and worship, and its Bible-based focus on themes that everyone can relate to. Conveniently located in Tarpon Springs at 2795 Keystone Rd. just west of East Lake Rd., people come from all over the bay area to worship at The Chapel because of its high energy, technologically savvy, come-asyou-are approach to living life as a Christian. The sign on the door says it all, for they believe that, “the Chapel is not just a place you go to, but a place you go from.” Pastor Mark Quattrochi was serving as Executive Pastor at Grace Family Church in Lutz, when he and his wife, Trisha, had a calling to plant a church of their own. Part of the ARC (Association of Related Churches), their new church opened in January of 2010, and originally shared the same

name. “Pastor Q,” as he’s lovingly known, completely remodeled the space and created a church where everyone is welcome to be a part of The Chapel. This year they changed their name to The Chapel, and their logo, which is an image of a mosaicstyle stained glass, represents how people from all different backgrounds can come together for one purpose, to find their God-given potential. A Brooklyn New York native, Pastor Q has said, “We’re a non-denominational church. Just a bunch of Baptist, Episcopal, Catholic, Presbyterian, Pentecostal people who are united around a common purpose: To worship Christ together, grow together, and to leave the church together and change our surroundings for the better.” One of the many things that make this church unique is its approachability. There’s no stuffy dress code, there’s no high pressure form to fill out on the first day, and there aren’t any hidden agendas. The straightforward, transparent and relevant messages that people come to hear is

There, the 0-Kindergarten age group play, learn about Jesus and just have a good time while their parents are in church. “The Zone” is a high-energy Nickelodeon-type experience for 1st–5th grade, and there the kids take part in all kinds of fun activities while learning and studying about how to live Christian lives even at school. For the 6th–8th grade set, The Chapel has a program called “Murge” which is a fantastic title for the group that is specifically designed to help these pre-teens merge into adulthood; this program equips students with information to live the life that God has intended for them and strives to instill morals that are so important at that time in their lives. High school students love to take part in “The Element,” which meets on the first Friday of every month. An interactive time coupled with live worship music all performed by students makes this a great place for junior high and high school students to connect. There are many students’ small groups that meet throughout the week, these groups focus on growing spiritually through relationships. Getting Involved Groups aren’t just for kids, there are more than 50 groups and no matter what season of life you are in, there is a group for you to get involved in at The Chapel; whether you’re into motorcycles or fly fishing, there’s a group there for everyone, which just gives people the chance to hang out and worship while doing things that they already like to do, whatever that is – from knitting to skating.

“We meet all over the community in Pinellas County,” says Pastor Q. From small groups of people with like-interests, to missions that dig wells in third-world countries, the parishioners at The Chapel are committed to bringing their faith beyond the walls of their church and into the community, which is why the staff helped to create myVillage, which is the name that they gave to their community outreach programs. From partnering with existing organizations like HEP (Homeless Emergency Project) of Clearwater to helping orphans or single moms, volunteers take on projects that help the community that we share. From serving the homeless to helping orphans or single moms, The Chapel wants to be a part of the community and help people know that they are not alone, and most of all, that they matter to God. These are just a few of the reasons that their slogan about The Chapel not just being a place you go to, but a place you go from, really fits the bill. What they’re doing is clearly hitting home with a lot of local residents. Pastor Q says, “We are very fortunate to already have over 1,000 people in weekly attendance in 27 months.” If you are looking for a place to worship that really speaks to your way of life, you should see what everyone is talking about and visit The Chapel in Tarpon Springs. If you’d like more information, their website is extremely informative and it gives you the chance to see Pastor Q’s weekly messages. Office hours are Mon. – Thurs., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. For more information, please visit www.TheChapel.cc or call (727) 560-1015.

AAP Fitness Expands into Palm Harbor It seems like only yesterday that Alex and Ashley Poptodorov followed their dreams and started AAP Fitness. In 2005 from a small one-car garage and a large dream of helping others, AAP Fitness was born. Since then, AAP has expanded into their 5th location in 6 years. From the garage to the living room to their first modest location in Cory Lake Professional Center in the heart of New Tampa, Alex and Ashley have grown their dream by making one thing a priority – the mission to help others change their LIVES by changing their lifestyle. What makes AAP nothing short of a miracle however, is not the steady growth or success experienced over the years; but instead, two different people with two very different sets of life experiences coming together and creating one common dream and mission… to help others learn to live a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Alex was on his way to pursuing medical school when he and Ashley met. It was love at first sight but it be-

20

came quickly noticeable to Alex that Ashley needed his help. You would never guess it by meeting Ashley but she was once 208 pounds and miserable in her life. She struggled tremendously with weight loss and began to spiral into an eating disorder. This is something that Ashley rarely shares, as it is a time in her life that was full of turmoil and sadness. Alex saw the tremendous need to help Ashley learn what a healthy lifestyle truly was. He designed her first meal plan, created her workouts and trained her to a fit and healthy, energetic human being! He taught her about food and the power of nutrition. He took her shopping and taught not just about good and bad choices but about what is in our food and how it can truly cure or ail us. The results were nothing short of amazing and inspiring to Ashley! She came alive from the inside out! Shortly after her amazing transformation Ashley helped Alex to see that his dream of attending medical school was not really his heart’s desire.

Tampa/Wesley Chapel community. This was always something Alex and Ashley pride themselves on: instilling healthy habits into the families that reside in their local community. Just as AAP Fitness was started on a dream, today it expands from a dream yet again. This past April, Alex and Ashley partnered with their good friends: Stephen and Chantil McLeod who took over ownership of the New Tampa location. Alex and Ashley have roots in the Palm Harbor community and Alex grew up in the area (his parents reside right around the corner in Dunedin) and they found this beautiful community to be the perfect place to expand their roots and grow AAP Fitness. Alex and Ashley will be bring-

ing their successful program to the Eastlake/Palm Harbor area in hopes of building relationships with the local community and sharing their rich knowledge on health and wellness. AAP Fitness is unique in the sense that it offers a complete program to individuals and families, not just training. Each AAP client gets a customized nutritional plan, supplement recommendation plan and email/text/phone support. Alex and Ashley know that this support is vital to the success and motivation of the client. As Ashley so vividly remembers the core reason behind her success was the constant support she received from Alex. “You can’t expect to have one or two hours per week and that’s it,” says Ashley. “Succeeding at a lifestyle change is as much about what you do outside of the gym as it is inside. This is where Alex and I come in, we are there to support you and answer your questions. We are there just to tell you that you “CAN” when at times you feel like you can’t. It’s emotional as much as it is physical.” Alex has a rich background in nutrition and has been in the health and wellness industry nearly 17 years.

Once you meet him it is easy to hear how knowledgeable he is. Through a thorough assessment he puts the pieces together to design and customize a complete plan specific to the individual. Each client goes through a nutritional and metabolic typing assessment as well as a 9-site body composition analysis. “It is not uncommon for Alex to spend hours on end in his office studying metabolic assessments and designing plans. He has such a passion for nutrition and applies it to our clients; it really changes lives.” says Ashley.

Their vision was to create a neighborhood pub where friends and families could gather to appreciate good food and sports together in an enjoyable atmosphere. Since Jim and Jeanette’s first Beef’s – a nickname the regulars came up with – opened in Brandon, Florida, the restaurant chain has grown tremendously and is now famous throughout the United States. Today, Beef O’ Brady’s is one of the fastest growing restaurants in the country. Some call it the “luck of the Irish.” Jim calls it “a darn good dream that took a lot of hard work.” While every Beef’s holds fast to the restaurant chain’s dedication to providing the highest quality food and

Ceremony Honoring Missing Man Held at Medical Center of Trinity By Diane Galemmo A Missing Man Dedication Ceremony was held on April 24 at the new Medical Center of Trinity. This poignant ceremony is symbolic of the Americans still missing from each of the five services – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard – and civilians. The purpose of the ceremony is twofold—to acknowledge the inability of our missing to be with us in the celebrations we hold because they have been left behind, and to honor their sacrifice to our country. In the hospital's dining area stands a lone table beautifully set for dinner. On it are six complete place settings, a red rose in a vase centerpiece, and a Bible. The table is reserved for our missing loved ones, and it symbolizes that they are here with us in spirit. It serves to remind us that our troops are in harm's way every day and we should never forget these brave men and women who heeded the call to service. A memorial tablet on a tripod near the table reads: “The table is round to show our everlasting concern

dinner plate at each place setting. Next, we sat stunned and saddened, listening to the Missing Man Roll Call. In a duologue between a Leader (on stage) and a Responder (at the rear of the crowd), the Leader announces, “I am about to conduct a roll call of U.S. Military Personnel.” He then asks the Responder, “If any fail to respond will you vouch for their whereabouts?” “Yes, Sir,” replies the Responder. In all cases, for all Military Personnel, the Responder replies, “Not present, Sir. Missing in action,

Sir.” The Responder then lists the missing. The numbers are staggering. “In World War I, 3,344 (1918) soldiers were last seen in Europe, mostly in Germany and France. In World War II, 73,690 were last seen in Europe, Asia, North Africa, the Pacific, the Atlantic, and on virtually every continent and ocean in the world. In the Korean War, 7,958 were last seen in 1953, mostly on the peninsula of South Korea. In the Vietnam War, 1,666 were last seen prior to Operation Homecoming in 1973 in South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand and the South China Sea. However, many have been reported seen alive in captivity since then, Sir. There were 126 Cold War personnel last seen sometime between the end of World War II in 1945, and the end of the Cold War in 1989, when the Berlin wall was torn down.” “Sir,” the Responder concludes, “We are at war with a ruthless enemy who hates our freedoms and the American way of life. They scoff at the Geneva Convention that was meant to protect all military personnel, both friend and foe, should they ever become captured.” The Leader then addresses ALL Americans: “Let us all find the resolve

to bring these American heroes home, no matter what it takes. Those who defend the United States of America should not be left in the hands of our enemies or ever be forgotten. We live and get the most out of life for those who gave up their good days for our freedoms. We live on to honor their memory, and fight those who would let them be forgotten, so the families of the missing may someday find peace. God bless our service men and women and God bless the United States of America. They are not forgotten!” Many local veterans were present at this stirring ceremony as were the Mitchell High School NJROTC; Paul Rizzo, senior chief of the Navy Seabees and Moe Moyer, State Director of Rolling Thunder, an organization whose mission is to educate the public that many American POW's were left behind after all previous wars, to help correct the past, and to protect future Veterans from being left behind should they become Prisoners of War or Missing In Action. Moyer tells us, “Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, U.S. Army, captured June 30, 2009 in Afghanistan is still being held against his will in Pakistan by the Taliban. Please, keep him in your prayers and let's work together

to bring him home...until they all come home.” Moyer is also the Director of USO (United Services Organization) Tampa Bay. Retired Senior Master Sgt. USAF Walter Lamerton and his wife Susan were present. Lamerton is a member of NCOA (Non-Commissioned Officers Association) and a member of Rep. Bilirakis and Rep. “Orthodontics” Continued from page 1 While orthodontics may not be a new concept, it is definitely a changing field, and things have progressed a great deal in the last few years. Braces are smaller and more comfortable, there are more options and affordability for more people, and braces can get the job done faster now than in years past. Where it might have taken a patient five years to reach their desired smile a decade ago, the average length for braces is now about two years. Braces, or appliances that are used to help align the teeth, have also changed dramatically. They are smaller and the manufacturing has gotten better, and the choices are a lot more varied. The regular silver smile is always available and effective, and they also offer “clear” or tooth-colored braces that really seem to make the braces disappear. And now there is an alternative to braces called Invisalign, a clear retainer-like plate or “aligner” that patients wear over their teeth. Using computer imaging and molds of the patient’s teeth, a series of these clear aligners are worn until the desired out-

come is reached. Drs. Albert and McDowell love Invisalign because it allows patients to remove them for meals, which makes for a more comfortable eating experience for the patient, and it also allows patients to be able to better clean their teeth, than with braces. Dr. Albert and Dr. McDowell treat patients of all ages, and while the majority of orthodontic patients are in their “tween” and teen years, they are finding that a lot more adults are finally taking the opportunity to correct their teeth. “Invisalign is a popular product especially with adults because it is invisible and more comfortable than braces,” says Dr. Albert. An Invisalign patient recently said, “Everyone is always so nice at Dr. McDowell’s office. I've always wanted straight teeth, but as an adult I didn't want to get braces. Now that Invisalign is a treatment option, my wife and I both went through treatment and love our results!” Drs. Albert and McDowell will help you find the best individualized treatment options and their office accepts most types of insurance and offers interest-free payment plans as well,

their choice, as well as freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies. Cookies? Games? Contests? This isn’t your mom’s orthodontist! However cool the waiting area is, you won’t wait there too long because Dr. Albert has recently streamlined the check-in process with touch screen patient self-check-in pads and has added additional state-of-the-art dental chairs to shorten the wait time. Speaking of dental chairs, these aren’t just your run-of-the-mill dental chairs. The patients at Albert & McDowell Orthodontics get to lie down in Tempur-Pedic dental chairs and watch a flat screen television while they receive their treatment. Sign me up! In order to make everything in his practice run smoothly, Drs. Albert and McDowell use a computerized program called a “Chart List” that tracks the progress of each patient and makes everything easily accessible for the doctor and their staff. They also have a program called “Dolphin Aquarium” which is an amazing virtual educating program that shows patients how to take care of their braces, use and change their rubber bands, and even explains how

to correct an overbite. Every year, Albert & McDowell Orthodontics throws a number of events and promotions intended to make going to the orthodontist fun for the entire family. This summer they are having a “Summer of Music and Smiles” event. Dr. Albert says, “We will be kicking it off with a contest through May and June where we will give away four tickets to the hot new boy-band One Direction, live in concert in Tampa on June 29. Then from July to August, we will be giving away a number of iPod Nanos as well!” What a great time to come in and learn about how Albert & McDowell Orthodontics can make your entire family smile.
