Get Wired In! Whether you are just gathering information for someone in your family, actually getting braces or just taking your child in for their appointment, it’s easy to get “wired in” at Albert Family Orthodontics! It is clear that Dr. Albert values the time that many parents spend at his office waiting for their children, which is why he provides conveniences that many other offices don’t have, from self-check-in options and free Wi-Fi, to freshly brewed Keurig Coffee and freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookies.

Albert Family Orthodontics, located at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. in the Trinity Professional Place plaza, has been making patients and parents smile for years, coupling the latest in orthodontic technology with experience and personal attention. When it’s time to choose an orthodontist, it’s important to choose someone who is experienced, compassionate, and well-educated in the latest technology and procedures. Jeremy Albert, D.M.D., M.S., is a University of Florida alumnus who is all of those things and more. Dr. Albert chose orthodontics because he enjoys making people smile, and because he knows the difference that a smile can make in a person’s life. Dr. Albert is a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. A graduate (with honors) of The University of Florida’s College of Dentistry, he also completed his Orthodontic Residency, received his Orthodontics Certificate, and earned his Master’s of Science Degree from

UF. A true Gator-fan, his office is festively decorated to display the love of his favorite team. You’ll also find pictures of his beautiDr. Jeremy Albert ful family, his wife Jacque and their three daughters.

The entire crew will enjoy the waiting area which is bright and roomy. It’s actually the perfect getaway for parents who may enjoy watching a movie or the news on one of the large flat-screen televisions while relaxing in one of the comfortable seating areas. If relaxing with coffee and cookies isn’t your thing, you and the kids can play XBOX with Kinect! Dr. Albert said, “It’s great how often we see parents and the kids jumping around and playing XBOX Kinect. It’s cool.” However cool the waiting area is, you won’t wait there too long because Dr. Albert has recently streamlined the check-in process with touch screen patient self-check-in pads and has added additional state-of-the-art dental chairs to shorten the wait time. Speaking of dental chairs, these aren’t just your run-of-the-mill dental chairs. Dr. Albert’s patients get to lie down in Tempur-Pedic dental chairs and watch a flat screen television while they receive their treatment. Sign me up! In order to make everything in his practice run smoothly, he uses a computerized program called a “Chart List” that tracks the progress of each patient and makes everything easily accessible for the doctor and his staff. He also has a program called “Dolphin Aquarium” which is an amazing virtual educating program that shows patients how to take care of their braces, use and change their rubber bands and even explains how to correct an overbite. In fact, nearly all of the things that can be done via technology are done so, which gives Dr. Albert and his staff the chance to really spend more time with their patients, and

Spice Fight – Boycotting Can Make A Difference! Pasco County parents are taking matters into their own hands to fight the synthetic drug known as “spice” – a drug that is sold as “incense” but that is packaged and marketed to youth. Even though you are supposed to be 18 to buy this stuff, it is being sold to underage buyers. It’s legal, it’s cheap and it’s deadly. And, because it’s not illegal, people are making the mistake of thinking that it can’t be harm them. Erik and Colleen Suojanen had a major scare when their son passed out after inhaling just one puff of “spice,” and these parents aren’t taking it without putting up a fight! Imagine finding your teen unresponsive and having to rush them to the hospital for something that isn’t even illegal. The problem is fast becoming an epidemic. And it isn’t that our law enforcement and government isn’t addressing the situation. They definitely are. The problem is the manufacturers are staying one step ahead of the

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

laws. For the past couple of years there have been constant efforts to illegalize spice but as soon as one formulation is banned, there is a new chemical mix to take its place. This is not something that only affects “other people.” On the night the Suojanens rushed their child to hospital, there were six others in the ER after smoking “spice” and they weren’t at a party together— that is seven unrelated instances! The Suojanen’s are taking matters into their own hands by organizing protests at stores that carry these dangerous products, which doesn’t end with “spice.” You’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard of the terrifying effects of “bath salts” – the most famous incident being the Miami man who literally ate another man’s face after allegedly ingesting “bath salts” which are a central nervous system stimulant that acts something like a mix of methamphetamine and cocaine. The number of calls to poison cen-

ters concerning "bath salts" rose 6,138 in 2011 from 304 in 2010, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.” Now, mind you, these products aren’t actually marketed as real bath salts or incense. You only have to look at the packaging to see that it is intended as a drug. “Please consider having your family join our family in the fight against the substance known as Spice,” says Erik Suojanen. “Spice is synthetic marijuana that is sold to teens in many mom and pop beverage/gas stores as well as several BP gas stations. It’s a chemically laced substance sold as incense in little cartoon Kool-Aid type packages with names like Mary Joy Dead and Berry ’d. This substance is 30 to 50 times more potent than marijuana, is very addictive, and it is killing kids, AND IT’S LEGAL!! The stores that sell this stuff know exactly what it’s being used for and they DO NOT CARE. If you See “Spice Fight” on page 56.

Local Residents Called to Contribute to Historic Cancer Research Effort Residents of Pasco County, Florida have an unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). CPS-3 will enroll a diverse population of up to half a million people across the United States and Puerto Rico. The opportunity for local residents to enroll in CPS-3 is being available at multiple locations across Pasco County between June 14th – 23rd. To see enrollment locations, dates, times and to schedule an appointment to enroll visit www.cps3pasco.org.

CPS-3 will help researchers better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. “My mom is a twotime cancer survivor and I’m doing all I can to make sure my children don’t have to say that…. I really believe this (CPS-3) is part of the answer,” stated one study participant. To enroll in the study, individuals will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form; complete a comprehensive survey packet that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to your health; have your waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Upon completion of this process, the Society will send periodic followup surveys to update your information and annual newsletters with study updates and results. The in-person enrollment process takes approximately an hour to complete. Periodic followup surveys of various lengths are expected to be sent every few years to individuals “Many individuals diagnosed with cancer struggle to answer the question, ‘What caused my cancer?’ In many cases, we don’t know the answer,” said Alpa V. Patel, Ph.D., prin-

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

cipal investigator of CPS-3. “CPS-3 will help us better understand what factors cause cancer, and once we know that, we can be better equipped to prevent cancer.” Dr. Patel added, “Our previous cancer prevention studies have been instrumental in helping us identify some of the major factors that can affect cancer risk. CPS-3 holds the best hope of identifying new and emerging cancer risks, and we can only do this if members of the community are willing to become involved.” Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from a series of American Cancer Society studies that began in the 1950s that collectively have involved millions of volunteer participants. The Hammond-Horn Study and previous Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS-I, and CPS-II) have played a major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. Those studies confirmed the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, demonstrated the link between larger waist size and increased death rates from cancer and

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

other causes, and showed the considerable impact of air pollution on heart and lung conditions. The current study, CPS-II, began in 1982 and is still ongoing. But changes in lifestyle and in the understanding of cancer in the more than two decades since its launch make it important to begin a new study. The voluntary, long-term commitment by participants is what will produce benefits for decades to come. “Taking an hour or so every few years to fill out a survey – and potentially save someone from being diagnosed with cancer in the future - is a commitment that thousands of volunteer participants have already made. We’re looking for more like-minded individuals in Pasco County to join this effort that we know will save lives and improve the outlook for future generations,” said Dr. Patel. For more information or to learn how to become involved with CPS-3, visit cancer.org/cps3, email cps3@cancer org, or call toll-free 1888-604-5888.

Southern Self Storage – Trinity’s Premier Self Storage By Kim Thomas “We are Trinity’s premier self storage,” states Lynn Mattix. “We aren’t just saying that either. Southern Self Storage really is the very best self storage facility in the area.” It just takes a visit to Southern Self Storage, located on Mitchell Boulevard in Trinity, to see why. The gated, secured selfstorage compound is immaculate in appearance and offers rare amenities such as drive-up, air-conditioned storage units. It is a well-established business that was founded in 1985 and now has twenty locations throughout Florida, and five Northern Self Storage locations in Canada. And, you will be impressed with the helpfulness, friendliness and community-involvement of the managers here. Mark and Lynn Mattix, who work as a team managing Southern Self Storage in Trinity, are well-seasoned veterans of the storage industry with more than twenty years of combined experience. The couple took over the management of the local Southern Self

Southern Self Storage’s commitment to the Trinity community is evidenced by their actions. Barkdoll Massage Therapy, Where the Massage Comes to You By Julie Kanehl Massage is a universal language that has been “spoken” for centuries in every region of the globe, and it has many benefits including the ability to reduce anxiety, relieve pain, reduce blood pressure, and aid in relaxation. For many people, massage is a rare treat that they look forward to at the spa or as an experience during their vacation. Others use massage on a regular basis to help with chronic pain, reduce inflammation or to help heal after an injury. Whatever your reason for wanting a massage, Barkdoll Massage Therapy makes it easy, affordable and best of all, Barkdoll comes to you. Barkdoll Massage Therapy, which is an entirely mobile-based massage business, is based in the Trinity area and is owned and operated by Licensed Professional, Karla Barkdoll, who has been in the massage industry since 2001. Serving Trinity and the surrounding communities, Barkdoll Massage Therapy is completely different in that it takes all of the stress out of your massage experience by bring-

ing it straight to you. No traffic, no stress, just pure relaxation where you feel most comfortable! Originally from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Karla moved to Baltimore where she trained at the Baltimore School of Massage. Licensed in Maryland, DC, Virginia and Florida, Karla is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them so that she can create the best personalized massage experience. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!”

Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. This massage is very popular all over the world because of its light, long, and slow strokes that relax your cares and worries away. If you are interested in trying something a little different, hot stone massages use something called warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage. According to Karla, the warm stones dissolve muscle tension and induce a deep relaxation.

sages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity recently said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kindhearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows that create a comfortable position just for her during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in

relaxation, which is why Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple recently wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!” If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them!

My Massage with Karla I am a huge fan of massages. I go every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m not busy with my family or writing for the Neighborhood News, I’m like most moms and am usually concerned with everyone else’s comfort over my own. That’s why I was so excited to be given the chance to experience one of Karla’s massages by the staff at Neighborhood News. (Thanks Jim!) Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! On the evening of my massage appointment, I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. A true professional, Karla even wears a clinical massage uniform. Within just a few minutes Karla had set up the massage table and was set up and ready to go. I was really impressed with how quickly the room I had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to me about what kind of massage treatment I wanted, and she asked if I had any injuries that she needed to be aware of. We decided on a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me many different aromatherapy options from rose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally at ease, and while she stepped out of the room, I comfortably got onto the massage table and got settled. When Karla came back in a moment later, she put on what I like to

call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can see that a massage with Karla would be a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates, but one of the best parts about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because her pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. From now on, I’m going to take better care of myself, and that includes having massage treatments from Barkdoll Massage Therapy on a regular basis. See you in a few weeks Karla! Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available Mon., Tues. and Wed., from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., and on other days by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 3726389 or email Karla at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com.

Celebrates 5 Years in Trinity By Julie Kanehl The Central Park Family Restaurant in New Port Richey has been serving New York City cooking to local residents for five years, and in that time has gained a reputation for great tasting, freshly prepared food, large portions and great prices. Conveniently located on S.R. 54 between Old C.R. 54 and Rowan Rd. near the Dunkin Doughnuts, the Central Park Family Restaurant is a favorite among people of all ages.

A family restaurant in more ways than one, Chris Michael, owner of Central Park Family restaurant, grew up in his parent’s restaurants in New York and here in Florida. The Michael family has been serving delicious New York City cooking, which has been richly influenced by their family’s Greek heritage, for more than 35 years. Their first restaurant in Florida was called the Four Coins Family Restaurant, and it opened in St. Petersburg in 1991. Chris’ father, Andy Michael, successfully ran the Four Coins restaurant for 16 years before they

Central Park has something on its vast menu to satisfy every appetite began to expand. In 2006 they opened the Central Park Deli & Grill in Oldsmar, and then in 2007 they came to New Port Richey. Today, Andy still runs a restaurant called the Square Plate in Pinellas Park, while Chris’ brother, Charlie, runs the Central Park Restaurant in Temple Terrace. For Chris and his family, running a restaurant is truly a passion, and it shows. At Central Park Family Restaurant, there is a sign that reads “May all who enter as guests leave as friends.” This is the motto for the restaurant

that really inspires Chris on a daily basis. Chris says, “Over the years we’ve acquired customers that have walked in as a first time customer and they’ve become part of our lives. He adds, “When our baby, Sofia, was born, we were flooded with gifts and wellwishes and I can’t tell you how grateful we were.” This is the kind of place where the owner greets you at the door by name, where Mama’s recipe is often made by Mama, and where you can really have anything that your heart desires to eat.

Owner Chris Michael welcomes you to Central Park Family Restaurant There are two enormous menus, one for breakfast (which is served all day) and the other for lunch and dinner. The staff is very friendly, the portions are humungous, and the prices are affordable. One satisfied customer said, “This restaurant goes above-and-beyond for their customers! My family and I have driven by Central Park hundreds of times and we finally decided to stop by and try it last night. We were blown away. When we walked in the door we were immediately greeted by the owner, we looked over and saw the chef’s specials of the day and couldn’t believe the pricing…it was great!” Chris says, “Our Chef always prepares different dinner specials every night. There is Stuffed Peppers every Wednesday, Corned Beef and Cabbage every Thursday, Beer Battered Fish and Chips on Fridays, and weekends feature specials such as Mussels Linguine (with a huge portion of mussels) and lamb specials. And we are known for having the best Chicken Pot Pie around!”

Breakfast is Served! Breakfast starts early at Central Park Family Restaurant, which opens its doors at 6:30 every morning. With a breakfast menu that includes pancakes, French toast, waffles, and 67 different kinds of omelettes, the hardest part of your day may just be deciding which menu item to try. Their “Egg-normous Omelette Menu” is broken up into sections designed to help you choose your favorites. For example, if you like simple omelettes you may want to choose something “From the Cheese Factory.” If you’re more of a traditional omelette eater, you may want to pick one of their items from their “For the Carnivores” part of the menu. They even offer seafood omelettes like their Shrimp Omelette, their Shellfish Omelette and their Tuna Salad Omelette. If you prefer something sweet, you will have to try one of their fresh Fruit and Cream Cheese Omelettes off of the “Sweet Tooth” portion of the menu. Ever had a Hamburger Omelette? How about a Blue Ribbon Omelette whipped up with homemade chili and cheese? How about an Aparagus & Hollandaise Sauce Omelette? Omelettes from all over the world are also represented in the menu, from Greece to Mexico, from Hawaii to Philly. If omelettes aren’t “egg-xactly” your thing, you’ll find plenty of other favorites on the menu from traditional favorites to rare specialties like Pennsylvania Scrapple. Breakfast specials are amazingly affordable given the amount of food on your plate(s), and according to Chris, he has regulars who come in every morning for breakfast. With 67 omelettes to try, I can see why! Dave from Spring Hill recently reviewed Central Park Family Restaurant

and said, “This little gem was a very pleasant surprise. The menu offers a wide variety of choices. Everything we tried was excellent, and there was plenty of it. Prices are very reasonable, too.” Central Park for Lunch and Dinner If New York City is the “melting pot” of the country, then Central Park’s lunch and dinner menu is the restaurant version. Influenced by food styles around the globe, there is something for everyone. The menu begins with traditional appetizers, but if you’re in the mood for something fun, you’ll really like their new Greek Saganaki, which is a pan fried cheese that is set ablaze at the table and served with Greek gyro bread. Homemade soups are a staple in a family restaurant, and Central Park is no different. Every day there is a homemade chicken soup as well as a soup-of-the-day. There is a large assortment of salads to choose from including a Greek salad that people just rave about. If you love a burger for lunch, you’ll enjoy their Empire State Burger, which is a one-pounder! There are a couple of new burgers on the menu including “The Skyscraper,” which is the largest burger that I’ve ever even heard of. This “Enormous Monstrosity” is a triple-decker, each patty adding a half-pound of Black Angus to the pile. By the time it hits the plate with all the toppings, the burger weighs in at over two pounds. The Skyscraper literally comes with a warning to eat at your own risk! If that’s a bit much, but you still want a sandwich, you might want to try one of their “Skyscraper Club Sandwiches” which are served on three slices of bread, with lettuce, tomato, bacon and mayo, and served with French fries and soup. This extensive menu also includes “Hot

Open Faced” sandwiches, “Market Fresh” sandwiches, and “Big-Mouth Wraps.” If you like grilled sandwiches, you’ll love their “Off the Grill” section which includes a variety of favorites like the Monte Cristo, the French Dip, and their Central Park Signature sandwich, which is piled high with fresh layers of pastrami and corned beef on authentic rye bread and topped with Swiss cheese, spicy mustard and grilled onions. Every grilled sandwich comes with French fries and soup – all under $7! “Homestyle Dinners” include Chopped Steak with Grilled Onions, Broiled Pork Chops, Baked Meat Loaf, Tender N.Y. Strip Steak and Broiled Pork Chops, just to name a few. If you’re a regular at Central Park Family Restaurant, you might want to try their new Pierogis and Kielbasa! Since the Michael family is Greek, they have an excellent selection of Greek Dinner Specialties that include a Gyro Dinner Platter, Chicken Souvlaki, Spanakopita and Shrimp Santorini – this is just a sampling of the many choices. When you become a regular at Central Park Family Restaurant they will set you up with their dining reward card, which stores information on it like a credit card. Every time you eat at Central Park, it saves up points that you can put towards free meals. “Our customers love the rewards card,” says Chris. “They use them all the time and really enjoy the savings that they get.” Central Park Family Restaurant is located at 7657 S.R. 54 in New Port Richey. It is open 7 days a week from 6:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. For more information, to order carryout or to ask about catering, please call {727} 376-7402 or visit CentralParkFamilyRestaurant.com.

Wounded Trinity Marine Accepts Customized Vehicle from Sun Toyota By Diane Galemmo You may recall the story we did last year about U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Justin Gaertner, the Trinity marine who suffered the loss of both of his legs, and a severe injury to his left arm, when an improvised bomb exploded beneath his feet in Afghanistan in November 2010. Gaertner, now 23, and a 2007 graduate of Mitchell High School in Trinity, went through intensive therapy with passionate determination and motivation. While it normally takes a person about six to nine months to learn how to walk on artificial legs, Justin Gaertner did it in three. Justin now has eight pairs of prosthetic legs. He can walk, surf and snowboard and recently won silver medals in the 2012 Warrior Games. On Memorial Day, a day on which we honor those who served our country, Justin was picked up at 10 a.m. by The Florida Patriot Guard Riders, who escorted him in

POWMIA formation from his home in Trinity to the Sun Toyota dealership in Holiday. He was greeted by a carnival atmosphere; the whole dealership was transformed into a display of military men and women, along with the public, all of whom saluted Justin. The community event took place during the weekend of May 25 through Memorial Day on May 28. Then came the pièce de résistance—Joe Reth, general manager of Sun Toyota, presented Justin with the keys to a new Toyota Tundra Platinum Crewmax, especially fitted with hand controls, step bars and other conveniences by Sun Toyota. The total cost for the vehicle with its modifications is $60,000. This new truck will

ship is picking up a good portion of the cost. The truck was missing parts on Memorial Day, but the hope was to have it ready by the following

Thursday for pickup. President and co-founder of the Wounded Vets Association (WVA), Greg Amira, met Justin last year in New York during the 9/11 tenth anniversary observance. He was very impressed with Justin’s attitude and determination, so when Toyota approached Amira saying they wanted to do something special for a veteran on Memorial Day, he immediately knew Justin would be the perfect choice. on the battlefield). Gaertner says he is planning to attend school at Florida State College in Jacksonville, concentrating on homeland security and business. He had words of wisdom to recently injured veterans. “There’s always going to be someone there to help you.” Sun Toyota has opened a page on its website, www.suntoyota.com/soldier.html where Justin’s story can be read and donations can be made towards the cost of his customized vehicle.

Trinity’s Painting With A Twist Fundraiser Supports “Wives Behind The Badge” On Saturday, June 9, Painting with a Twist in Trinity held a special event to support Wives Behind the Badge, a non-profit organization that aids the families of police officers. Participants in the June Painting with a Purpose event received step-by-step instruction to paint a skyline entitled “Tampa Bay at Night” with half of the class fee going to Wives Behind the Badge. Every year, hundreds of police officers are killed or wounded in the line of duty. Florida is one of the deadliest states in the country for law enforcement professionals. While these officers go to work to serve and protect, their spouses are at work trying to provide support to the families. Wives Behind the Badge was founded in 2006 and now has 500 members. The non-profit organization raises awareness and provides emotional and financial support to the families of police officers, including scholarships for the children and spouses and the sup-

port program, HALOS (Helping Aid Lost Officers’ Survivors). In addition to raising money to help the families, Wives Behind the Badge also raises awareness, providing a positive voice for law enforcement in the community. Every month, Painting with a Twist in Trinity hosts Painting with a Purpose, a 3-hour class, where participants will be guided step by step to complete the acrylic painting du jour. For the WBTB event, guests painted a nighttime skyline of Tampa Bay. Even people who have never painted before will walk away with their original artwork. The stroke-by-stroke classroom approach always surprises even the most unsure participants. “It’s so much fun to see people unleash their inner artist. Most of our students are amazed at what they can do with a little instruction and a palette of paint,” says Sharon Reis, coowner of the Trinity studio, which opened in October 2011. Since then,

Painting with a Twist is a concept born of two spirited women in New Orleans following the dark days of Hurricane Katrina. The motto of Painting with a Twist is, “A little bit of paint, a little bit of wine, and a whole lot of fun.” The idea quickly caught on and the business is enjoying a growth spurt that has yielded more than 60 units in two short years of franchising. Offering a unique getaway that includes friends, paint and the option to bring a favorite bottle of wine and snacks, Painting with a Twist has become a pioneer in the art entertainment industry, making art accessible to anyone. With local art instructors as guides, friends can come together for an evening of creativity and camaraderie as they create one-of-a-kind pieces of art and, often, discover a new found talent. Over 100 artists work for the

One parent said, "Our family absolutely loves Jeremy Albert and his staff! He has such a wonderful and friendly demeanor with us and our children. His office is beautiful and super clean with cool video games for the kids to play on while they wait. The actual patient rarely has to wait over five minutes before they're seen, but the video games are great for the siblings who have to come along to the appointments. There's also Wi-Fi access and great coffee for the parents to access. [The] staff up front always greet you with a smile and are so pleasant to work with.” Dr. Albert likes to see his future patients for a free consultation around the age of seven or eight, so that he can better educate the parents on what to expect when they are teenagers and their permanent teeth come in. When Dr. Albert works

with families in this way, everyone is prepared and ready to go when treatment begins. Like technology, orthodontics has evolved a great deal. Braces have more options, are more comfortable, smaller than in years past, and are affordable for more people. Also, braces can get the job done faster now than in years past. Where it might have taken a patient five years to reach their desired smile a decade ago, the average length for braces is now about two years. Also, Dr. Albert has a digital x-ray machine that reduces radiation and provides phenomenal images for diagnosis. The regular silver smile is always available and effective, but they also offer “clear” or tooth-colored braces that really seem to make the braces disappear. Also, there is an alternative to braces called Invisalign, which is a clear retainer-like plate or “aligner” that patients wear over their teeth, and using computer imaging and molds of the patient’s teeth, a series of these clear aligners are worn until the desired outcome is reached. Dr. Albert says, “We have recently added digital scanning tech-

“Spice Fight” Continued from page 3 would like to help rid our community of this poison, please e-mail me at eriks@yourplumbers.com and I will add your name to our updates list. The child you save may be your own.” If you join Erik’s email list, you’ll be informed of the local fight against stores who are selling these drugs. The Suojanens organized the first protest on May 6th at the Metro Gas Station located at 9011 Little Road in New Port Richey. It was attended by at least 40 protesters carrying signs and was covered by Fox 13 News, ABC Action News, the Tampa Bay Times and Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. This is a problem that is turning into a national epidemic and is being recognized by officials at every level. “I commend Sheriff Nocco, parents and others who are working diligently to rid our community of bath salts and spice,” says Senator Mike Fasano. “It is sad that no matter how hard we try to outlaw these dangerous substances, greedy

56

people continue to create new compounds so they can skirt the law. It is vitally important that parents be made aware of the scourge these substances are. Sold as supposedly benign substances, they are intentionally are misused, often with serious consequences. The number of hospitalizations due to abusing these substances is rapidly increasing. Hopefully the community will band together and force the stores that carry these products to pull them from their shelves. What little money the store may make is hardly worth the physical and emotional damage they cause, especially to the young and impressionable.” Sen. Fasano continues, “While Tallahassee will continue to try staying ahead of the curve in its efforts to make more and more compounds illegal, it truly takes the active involvement of families, leaders and the business community to impress upon vendors and those who purchase these items, that they are dangerous substances that do more harm than good. I hope that as we continue to work together we can one day look back

and see that the lure of spice and bath salts has faded and their availability has dried up.” We are consumers. We stop at convenience stores and spend our hard-earned wages. There are many stores that would never carry these products. Make sure you are spending your money at stores where the management has morals. Boycott these stores that are selling spice, bath salts and other designer drugs, and soon they will realize that whatever small profit they are making on this trash can’t make up for the profits lost from other sales.

JUNE 2012

“They are working on this at a legislative level to get this outlawed,” says Erik Suojanen. “Please do not wait for others (government or otherwise) to solve this problem. It’s our problem. I don’t care if it’s legal – they know what it is they are selling. It’s morally corrupt and not only that – it is evil!” Join the fight, email eriks@yourplumbers.com for information about future protests. And at the very least, if you find that a store is selling “spice” or “bath salts,” let them know you won’t be back.
