Universal Fine Wine & Spirits Offers Variety, Great Customer Service & Affordable Prices By Julie Kanehl Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, also known as Universal Liquors, has been providing local residents with an amazing selection of wine, beer and liquor for nearly ten years. Today, this family owned and operated liquor store has an online store as well, and is well known by locals for providing everyday low prices on everything from craft beers to their favorite name brand whiskeys. Whether you’re looking to pick up the usual staples or are looking to spice things up with something fun and frivolous, you’ll find everything you need at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, which is located on U.S. Hwy 19 in Holiday, just a few miles from Tarpon Springs, East Lake,

Trinity and New Port Richey. Their convenient location, their generous hours of operation and the fact that they are open 365 days a year, makes Universal Liquors a real favorite for many, and that word of mouth has been the key to what has made Universal Fine Wine & Spirits so successful over the last ten years. Owner Rob Janevski says, “We pick up a lot of business because of word of mouth and because of our customer service. We’ll take the time to help customers find what they’re looking for.” One customer recently said, “This is the best liquor store around. They have a little bit of everything.” See “Universal FWS” on page 58.

You may not realize this, but right next to Universal Fine Wine & Spirits in Holiday is the hottest bar in town. We’re talking a jaw dropping atmosphere with hipster flair, DJs, live music, couches and lounge chairs, a pool table, cool people and over 250 brands of liquor, wine and beer all in one place. From the outside, Orbit 19 is pretty much a blank slate, a mystery, and for years I know I drove right by. Those days are over, my friend, because Orbit 19 is where it’s at. Located at 1542 US Hwy 19 in

Holiday, its otherworldly feel takes you miles away from Pasco County and straight into orbit. It’s not just me that seems to think so either. Orbit 19, which was built from the ground-up and is owned by the same family that opened Universal Fine Wine & Spirits in 2003, has been winning awards for its unique bar experience for years. In fact, Creative Loafing has given Orbit 19 a few of their coveted “Best of the Bay” awards in categories such as Best Kept Secret, Best Night Life in Pasco and Best Pickup Spot and the 2012 Critic’s Choice award as Best Night Life in Pasco.

Rob Janevski, who is the owner of Universal Fine Wine & Spirits, says, “A lot of people who have come to the store for years have no idea that we have a lounge. When they see it they all say, ‘This isn’t at all what I expected!’ ” Dadia Janevska, Manager and Events Director at Orbit 19, has created an upscale bar environment that caters to a clientele who prefer premium well drinks and top shelf liquor to the cheap stuff. Behind the simple façade, Orbit 19 is classy, eclectic and, frankly, a whole lot of fun. Rob says, “[Orbit 19] is a laid back kind of lounge where people can sit, drink and socialize.” The reviews for Orbit 19 are pretty stellar, and many of their regulars can’t stop raving about it.

Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Summer Fun at Old McMicky’s Farm in Odessa Homebuilder Ralph Zuckerman purchased some land in Odessa at the site of Old McMicky’s farm, which went up for sale in 2006. It was very rundown and for years he didn’t know what to do with the property. But whatever his eventual plans, the land had to be cleaned up. When that was done, the homebuilder decided not to fill the lakefront property with houses. Instead he turned the land into a petting zoo and a farm, with goats, rabbits, chickens and ponies for riding. There’s a milking station where kids not only learn about milking a cow, but also will have a chance to do it. Located next door is the baby barn, filled with the farm’s youngest residents. Above it, a loft maze provides an outlet for the seemingly endless energy of visiting children. Every child gets a pony ride and can travel a barnyard maze that ends with a slide ride from the second story. There’s also a hayride powered by a 1949 Ford tractor. A visit to the baby pygmy goats elicits shrieks of delight and squeals. Commenting on the farm, Zuckerman says, “It’s old-fashioned, traditional fun in a beautiful natural setting.” In late May, kindergarten and firstgrade students gave the farm a test run before it officially opened to the public. “It’s great to see the amazement on their faces,” Zuckerman says. “Most of these kids have never held a chicken, and you can see their faces light up. They are learning to have an appreciation for animals.” Along the way, guides provide details on the animals and how they are cared for.

4

“Many of the same people who worked at the farm before it closed in 2006 have rejoined the team,” Zuckerman says. In an effort to give back to the community, Zuckerman introduced a program called 1,000 kids. “We want to bring 1,000 kids who are facing any type of challenge, whether it is a physical, health or mental challenge,” Zuckerman says. “(We) bring them out for an amazing day on the farm at no charge.” Zuckerman has reached out to several area nonprofit groups and is open to working with others, including Wounded Veterans. “The farm is very peaceful,” Zuckerman says. “It’s very healing. I decided I wanted to re-create the tradition for the Tampa Bay area. The farm is on the former Camp Keystone acreage. It was founded in 1946 and had served as a popular summer camp for six decades. Old McMicky’s Farm is at 9612 Crescent Drive in Odessa. It is open every day with the first tour beginning at 9 a.m. and the last tour at 1 p.m. The cost is: children, $9; adults, $11; seniors, the military, law enforcement, firefighters or teachers, $9. Groups of 20 or more with reservations, pay $8 per person. Fourth of July Fireworks Light up the Night Sky The city of Port Richey is planning to spend $7,000 for a pyrotechnic display over Waterfront Park, located at Miller’s Bayou at 8119 Old Post Rd. in Port Richey on the 4th. According to City Manager Tom O’Neill, the fireworks will begin about 9 p.m. and last for 10 to 12 minutes. The city’s Community Redevelopment Dept. (CRA) will directly hire the Princeton, Florida-based Fireworks Unlimited LLC. The CRA has $15,000 set

aside in its special events budget. City council members, acting as the CRA board, agreed to a $3,500 deposit. The fireworks company plans to fire about 556 shells of various sizes. The company, managed by Gary S. Avins, will carry a $1 liability insurance policy and handle all permits and licenses. The display will be the only fireworks show in West Pasco on the 4th of July. However, on June 30 Greater New Port Richey Main Street is planning an early Independence Day Festival and fireworks display. The event will be held Sat., June 30 from 2 p.m to 11 p.m., in Sims Park in downtown New Port Richey. Main Street in conjunction with Friendly Kia, Tampa Bay Times and the City of New Port Richey offers this event to the citizens of West Pasco as a celebration of freedom and everything that is allAmerican, including the annual fireworks display. It is a day filled with all American food, arts and crafts, the annual Miss Firecracker contest, live music and, of course, the highlight of the day––the fireworks. Attendance of approximately 10,00012,000 is anticipated. The music lineup consists of three local bands with strong followings, as well as Draw the Line, an Aerosmith tribute band out of Boston. In addition to Draw the Line, local businessman Eric Anderson and his band, Jam Sandwich, will be the festival’s opening act. Local favorites Circle Sky will also perform followed by That 70s Band. Draw the Line will go on stage at approximately 8 p.m. with a break around 8:45 for the fireworks display. The band will continue playing until approximately 10:30 p.m. Activities and fun for the whole family will be underway beginning at 2 p.m. on June 30th including a Corn Hole Tournament, bounces houses, face painters and many other summertime festivities. Bring blankets or lawn chairs, and leave your coolers at home. Food and beverages including beer and wine will be available throughout the day.

Main Street needs volunteers to help out with the event. Call 727-842-8066 if you want to help out. Volunteers Spruce up New Port Richey Downtown Area Mike Glass of West Pasco Outreach along with Somebody Cares Tampa Bay (CareFest) have come together to volunteer to clean-up the landscaping at the property on River Road in New Port Richey that was once home to the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The community service event is part of a larger day of service called CareFest, a Christ-centered community service. The property had the lawn, bushes and trees cut and trimmed; vines were removed. The volunteers were on the property on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Along with the cleanup at the River church, some individuals from these groups helped two wheelchair-bound residents. These organizations volunteer their time to help municipal governments like the City of New Port Richey and residents that are need of help with their property. In the past, these groups have helped with cleaning of the Hacienda, installed an irrigation system at the New Port Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center, and painted at Sims Park. While Glass and his team were cleaning up the church, groups in several Suncoast cities were cleaning up parks and vacant buildings, as well as assisting the elderly. CareFest activities are tri-county and are not just faith-based. “Anyone can help clean up the community,” says Glass. Other organizations such as The Well Worship Center have also helped the City at the Recreation and Aquatic Center with trimming the bushes around the pools, as well as trimming and pulling weeds from the Butterfly Garden. The Well Worship Center has also beautified the flowerbeds at Peace Hall at Grand Blvd. and Peace Lane along with cleaning

and painting inside the building. The City of New Port Richey appreciates groups like these that assist in making our community a beautiful place to live, work, and play. Another Hurricane Season Gives Some Trinity Residents the Jitters It’s the start of another hurricane season, but for the residents of Thousand Oaks, as well as other sections of Trinity, memories of Tropical Storm Debby (Sept. 2012) linger. How could one forget a storm that dumped 16 inches of rain on them, leaving streets underwater for three days? Adding insult to injury, a series of storms over the next few weeks added another 10 inches of rain to an already intensely saturated ground, which, after three months, still hadn’t dried out. Flooding also closed sections of S.R. 54 and residents became stranded in their homes. The Thousand Oaks and Trinity Oaks communities sit at the bottom of a bowl in the Duck Slough watershed. Those neighborhoods were some of the hardest hit in Pasco, both by Debbie and subsequent rainfalls. In these hardest hit areas, water was found to be flowing like a river between homes. A $1 million state grant will go toward fixing drainage issues in the Duck

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Slough basin and in the Thousand Oaks/Trinity Oaks areas in Trinity. In addition, a team of inspectors visited our area last month to scrutinize 23 parcels the county wants to buy or elevate in the wake of Debby, according to Annette Doying, Pasco’s Emergency Management Director. An additional $1.2 million has been pledged toward purchase of these parcels. Doying emphasized that Pasco suffered the largest losses in the state from Debby. She added that premiums could likely take a big jump soon for secondary homes in flood plains. County officials have been working on flooding problems in the area since 2003. Angry residents wondered why a fix was taking so long. At this time, the county is working with homeowners associations, which bear some of the responsibility for maintenance and cleaning of drainage ditches. Pasco emergency officials have been communicating in weekly conference phone calls with National Weather Service (NWS) experts based in Ruskin, says Doying. Meanwhile, the county will maintain the same shelters as last year, including two locations that accept pets. For more information, please contact the Pasco County Office of Emergency Management at (727) 847-8137 or visit www.pascoemergencymanagement.com.

New York Made Local By Dara Tucker When you were growing up, did you have a favorite family member or friend’s house that you loved going to because from the moment you entered you were provided with delicious food? Food that filled your belly and warmed your heart. Central Park Family Restaurant on State Road 54, near Dunkin’ Donuts and Wendy’s, makes customers feel like guests, with delicious food in a friendly atmosphere. Owner Chris Michael has a long family history of providing excellent food. Chris’s family opened their

first restaurant in New York City in 1982, and when they moved to Florida they ran Four Coins Family Restaurant in St. Petersburg for nearly 16 years. In 2007 and 2008, New Port Richey and Temple Terrace locations of Central Park Family Restaurant opened, and in 2010 they opened Square Plate Restaurant in Pinellas Park. When I first visited Central Park Family Restaurant in New Port Richey, I was looking for a new familyowned breakfast diner. I love that you can get breakfast at any time of day there, and I thought that’s what we’d

eat. We had no idea how much more there was to Central Park until our first visit. Chris and his family take traditional favorite comfort foods and update them with a fresh twist. He calls it American fusion; I call it delicious. You can start your meal with an appetizer of saganaki (a Greek flaming cheese), calamari or one of the many other appetizers. Their southern fried chicken is crispy golden brown, and served with waffles and collard greens with a kick. This is a Monday staple, but if you come in on a Tuesday, Central Park offers a Cuban chicken platter that includes black beans, Caribbean rice, and fried plantains

with a beautiful mango orange reduction sauce. Every Friday, the special is Fish & Chips. On the weekend you can try their perfected lamb dinner. Grouper is served too, but only when it’s in season and fresh, because Central Park strives to serve only quality ingredients. Between the generous portions and delectable food combinations, you would really think you were being served in an upscale New York restaurant, without the upscale prices. If you’re visiting Central Park for lunch they have an enormous variety of salads to choose from as well as award-winning burgers. Their burgers are all natural ground beef with no fillers. The half-pound Black Angus beef burgers include specialty burgers such as the Jalapeno Ranch with melted American cheese, grilled jalapenos, sizzling bacon, ranch dressing, and BBQ sauce. If you’re adventurous you could try the Skyscraper

Left - Cuban Chicken Platter with Black Beans, Caribbean rice, and Fried Plantains with a Mango Orange Reduction; Center - Pork Osso Bucco over Homestyle Mashed Potatoes, and Oreo Cheesecake (right). which consists of three, half-pound Black Angus burger patties, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and the bun to tilt the scale at over two pounds total! Central Park Family Restaurant’s produce is handpicked by the family at produce farms before it enters the restaurant. The time the staff puts into inspecting the produce in advance is evident when you order one of the many salads from their menu. Their Caesar salad can be topped with chicken or shrimp, and their Italian salad is loaded with salami, pepperoni,

ham, and mozzarella cheese. A favorite is their salad for each season. The summer salad is refreshing with grilled chicken breast, dried cranberries, shredded cheese and raspberry vinaigrette. Their winter salad in comparison, has sliced ham, mozzarella cheese, pineapple and your choice of homemade dressing. No matter what time of day you visit Central Park Family Restaurant, I recommend at least one person in your party to order from their breakfast menu so you can sample some of it yourself! Their pancakes are the best I’ve ever eaten –

anywhere. They are so fluffy, mine measured 1/2 inch high. Waffles are also delicious, and if you’d like something lighter you can try one of the crepes. There are 67 different types of omelets on the menu, all of which are made with extra large eggs. Some locals enjoy that they can find both scrapple (a traditional mush of pork combined with cornmeal and wheat flour with spices) and New Jersey Taylor pork roll at Central Park, just like they would up north. Don Bailey and Charlotte Jackson of Trinity normally eat two meals a day at Central Park Family Restaurant. Don says, “The portions are large. Many times we can get another meal from the leftovers. The price you pay is well worth it.” Charlotte adds, “We’ll pass a bunch of other places to eat here. It’s not hit or miss, but consistently good. We like that Don can order a breakfast and I can order a lunch at the same time. Chris is always bringing in new things too, that aren’t even on the menu. Today I just had frog legs, and they were delicious!” Do you have a birthday or anniversary party coming up? Central Park Family Restaurant has made it easy to serve their delicious food at your next

gathering, with their convenient catering. Their catered food not only tastes delicious, but also looks beautifully displayed on your table. Central Park donated a catered breakfast for the Relay for Life at Mitchell High School, and believes in giving back to the community through donations and fundraisers. Friends of Freedom, breast cancer awareness, New Port Richey Symphony Orchestra, and local sports and dance teams are just some of the local needs the family has been able to help through their restaurant. Central Park Family Restaurant serves delicious food in a friendly atmosphere. Their extensive menu is sure to please everyone in your family, and their attentive, long-standing staff brings customers back time and time again. Central Park Family Restaurant is located at 7657 SR 54 in New Port Richey in the plaza near Dunkin Donuts and Wendy’s. They are open daily from 6:30 a.m. with last seating at 8 p.m. For information about Central Park, including catering, call (727) 376-7402, visit www.centralparkfamilyrestaurant.com or like them on Facebook.

Trinity Yoga and Massage Inc. Celebrates its Grand Re-Opening By Alexis Selby Trinity Yoga and Massage Inc. celebrated its grand re-opening on May 17th, welcoming new co-owner Janel Norton and introducing new instructors Adria Owen and Victoria Hawkins. The evening started off with a free power yoga class taught by Adria, that was accompanied by the very cool yoga tunes of DJ Menscha, an up and coming DJ in the Tampa Bay area. Food, drinks and chair massages by Peter Lowden of Ahava Massage made for an evening full of fun, with plenty of things for guests to do while meeting new and current students. Christina Lowden and Janel Norton, owners of Trinity Yoga, were so grateful for the outpouring of support from the community and feel really lucky to be a part of the Trinity/New Port Richey area. Janel says, “This area is just full of beautiful, kind people who have really helped us to grow and share our love of yoga.” Trinity Yoga now has 31 classes a week on their schedule, ranging from gentle yoga for the beginner or athlete that

needs a good stretch, to hot power yoga for those looking to change up their workout routine or create more flexibility for their current activities or sport. They also offer many different forms of massage, from relaxation to structural integration and acupuncture.

Trinity Yoga Teacher Bios Janel Norton Janel tried her first yoga class in 1992 while covering humanitarian relief efforts in Bosnia; she didn’t understand a word of it (the class was in another language). Fast forward over 20 years of working in high stress environments such as war zones, daily newspapers, graduate school, and the biggie – parenting; Janel always found that a good workout was a great way to keep her sane in the midst of a hectic schedule, but had no idea how physically demanding yoga could be until she stepped into a hot power class at Trinity Yoga. She was hooked! Then, something transformational began to happen. She noticed yoga following her off the mat. Whether it

was using the breath she learned in class to stay calm through heavy traffic, or taking a pause to center before dealing with her prepubescent daughter, she found the after effects of yoga were transformational on many levels. Janel decided to explore yoga further through teacher training, and received her Yoga Alliance 200-YTT certification through the Lotus Pond this past March. Before the ink could dry, she signed up for the 500-YTT. The stars aligned just as she began teaching classes at the very studio where she began her yoga journey – it was an offer to become co-owner of Trinity Yoga Studio. Now, Janel has the opportunity to share the benefits of the practice with her community by helping others cultivate their own inner peace and strength and healing. Adria Owen Adria is a RYT200 certified Yoga Alliance teacher who discovered the amazing practice of yoga six years ago. She soon realized that yoga not only helped bring calm into her life but also provided another outlet to express cre-

atively while forming a deeper connection to herself, others and the Divine. Creative expression has always been a common thread in Janel Norton Adria’s life and before becoming a yoga instructor she enjoyed the opportunity to travel the country as a National Educator for a major hair color corporation and also worked behind the chair as a stylist for 11 years. In 2012, she made the choice to stop traveling and moved towards a new path. Along this journey she has recently become engaged and lives in the Westchase area with her fiancé Kevin, his two children Claire and Kevin II and their “furry children” Harpo and Cali. Fanning the flames of transformation, she completed her 200-hour training at The Lotus Pond and is currently working

Ragazzi’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant – The Difference is in the Sauce! Ragazzi's NY style Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant is now better than ever! Owners Cristina and Joseph have spent the past two years working diligently to give their customers something special. At Ragazzi’s, customers enjoy a break from fast food and can relax, knowing that a meal comprised of the finest choice ingredients and house-made sauces is being prepared just the way they like it. Everything on the menu at Ragazzi’s is made with love, from the calzones and pasta to the pizza pies and the many Italian specialty entrées. Ragazzi’s is located in New Port Richey on State Road 54 at the Pasco Square Shopping Center and is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday. “Ragazzi’s received a Five-Star Award for Customer Satisfaction in 2013 from the Talk of the Town news,” says Cristina, who is rightfully proud of the improvements that she and Joseph have made, such as the upgrades to the dining room. “We improved everything at our restaurant, including adding imported ingredients such as cooking wines and cheeses,”

22

says Cristina. “It makes a tremendous difference in the flavor." She adds, “Ragazzi’s received a visit from two food critics who personally called to congratulate the chef after their visit,” says Cristina. “Our chefs work very hard to maintain the high quality and consistency of our food. We treat every dish as a work of art. We make every dish from scratch because we believe freshness and quality are the foundation of extraordinary flavor. Once people taste the difference of the authentic New York-style artisan pizza and our gourmet dishes and soups, they become regulars.” One of the newest “regulars” comes in every Thursday. Cristina says, “He usually looks at the menu and says ‘I don’t know what to choose! Everything is so good – could you pick two for me?’ Then he enjoys a glass of wine while he waits and starts suggesting selections he has tried to the people who come in to order take-out. It is the best advertising!” Ragazzi’s Sauce – It’s Special! “Everything started as a little

seed,” explains Cristina on how they decided to start bottling Ragazzi’s Authentic Homemade Italian Sauce. “We kept hearing and hearing how good our sauces were and how far some of our clients traveled to come to our restaurant. We have customers from Town ‘n’ Country in Tampa, South Tampa, Carrollwood, Odessa, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. One of our faithful diners, Pat, comes every week saying, ‘If you guys weren’t here I think I would starve!’ All of the feedback led us to the idea to bottle our own homemade sauces. Our sauces are made from scratch, so it is an intensive four- to five-hour process for a batch. They are preservative and sugar free, and made the old-fashioned way. The result shows in the flavor – amazing!” Delicious, house-made sauce is nothing new for Ragazzi’s but it took a bit of work to reach the goal of selling it to the public. It was a ten-month

process from idea to finished product, but Cristina says it was all worth it and when the inspector came to approve Ragazzi’s, he ordered three jars for himself! “Currently, our sauces are being sold in South America and at Nutrition Smart Supermarkets in the U.S. Nutrition Smart is a chain of supermarkets that offers high quality products such as organic, preservativefree and sugar free foods. The grocery manager Philip Ricupa, originally from New York, loved our sauces and the fact that they are locally produced. As a result, we had to dedicate Mondays

It is very rewarding to see our sauces in the shelves!” Joseph and Cristina wanted to do something to give back to the community and wanting to specifically help families. They decided to donate a percentage of the store’s sale of sauces to the Youth and Family Alternatives program in New Port Richey. Cristina explains, “This organization is dedicated to strengthening families and offers

many programs such as substance abuse prevention and intervention services, foster care and adoption, runaway and youth crisis with a focus on family counseling. We spent a day visiting their facilities and really liked their methodology. A lot of major changes happen during the earlier years and sometimes the pressures of life, family and school make the youth lose track of their goals, which could be devastating in their later years. This organization helps them get back on track and deal

with all the different changes in a healthy way.” Ragazzi’s Cares Ragazzi’s is dedicated to providing a good work environment for their employees, all of whom Cristina and Joseph have personally trained. “We partner with Career Central and a youth program that is a service of Pasco-Hernando Workforce Board where they place the youth in their first job. We decided to open our doors and give the young people a chance to develop a trade for their future. Our core beliefs at Ragazzis are: Trust, Attitude and Teamwork.” Cristina says that she realizes that a first job can be intimidating and that is why she works hard to help her servers to develop skills they will need now and in the future. “We develop their job skills and teach them discipline, responsibility and accountability,” says Cristina. “We always tell them, ‘Think of life as a seed. When you work with a good attitude, giving the best of yourselves and staying out of trouble, life will reward you the same way in the right time.” She adds, “We encourage the new

generation to dream and always have a vision. My husband had an idea for a product and two of our employees are developing everything. We plan to patent the idea and compensate them on future sales. We also had one of our employees create the best piece of advertising for us. They need to have dreams and plans for the future to keep them on the right track.” It is crucial to Joseph and Cristina that Ragazzi’s is a drug-free environment. “We give our employees the tools they need to occupy their mind with positive things such as learning a trade, working together and sharing ideas. We want them to always have a goal and a dream.” Ragazzi’s remains committed to providing customers with delicious food cooked with fine ingredients and extra care. Next year, Ragazzi’s first franchise is planned to be open. And Cristina says you can expect even more great food in the future, as they plan to add a variety of delicious different products for customers locally and abroad. Cristina adds, “We really would like to thank our faithful clients who inspired us to produce our sauces. Their positive feedback was a huge motivation. Also, to our employees, a huge THANK YOU for working very hard and making it happen!” Ragazzi’s Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant is located at 7119 S.R. 54 in New Port Richey and is open from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Wed. & Thurs., 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Fri. & Sat., and 3 – 9 p.m. on Sun. Suntan Lotion for Your Eyes The Importance of U.V. Protection for Your Eyes should be avoided. UVB Rays – these are the main concern for your eyes. These are the rays that are linked to eye disease. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology “long term exposure to UVB rays is linked to eye disease. UVB radiation is considered more dangerous to eyes and skin than UVA radiation.” UVC Rays – these are generally not damage causing, as they are blocked by the atmosphere.

By Aron M. Arkon, L.D.O. Summer is just around the corner and this is a good time to review the importance of ultraviolet (UV) protection for your eyes in terms of protecting your eyes from the harmful effects of this type of exposure. Think of UV protection like suntan lotion for your eyes.

Medical Most of us already know that ultraviolet rays can cause a variety of medical conditions including skin cancer, cataracts, as well as cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes. UV exposure may also increase the risk of macular degeneration, a leading cause of blindness in the elderly. It is important to understand that UV exposure is invisible and effects are diagnosed by regular visits to your medical professional.

Test Current Sunglasses If you are not sure your current favorite pair of sunglasses offers adequate UV protection we suggest stopping in to your local optical shop. Most have a UV meter, which will test for the percent of UV blocked by your lenses. The test is

quick and generally will not cost you. Finally, take care of your eyes by always having adequate UV protection in non-prescription sunglasses as well as all prescription eyewear. Aron M. Arkon, L.D.O. works with ophthalmology practices across the country as a senior consultant. He also is a national lecturer at conferences. He is the owner of Maxi Eyecare, located in New Port Richey.

Children and UV Many parents underestimate the importance of protecting young children’s eyes against long term UV damage all year long but especially in the summer. Just like applying sunscreen or sunblock, young children should have a quality pair of sunglasses with 100% UVB block. This will protect their eyes when outdoors.

Millian-Aire Keeps Trinity Cool 24/7 By Julie Kanehl Summer is upon us, and between the sweltering heat and the humidity, let’s face it, staying cool is of the utmost importance. In fact, air conditioning is one of those things that many people take for granted until something happens to it! Florida without AC makes you wonder how anyone lived here before it existed. Almost instantly there’s a thick heat that moves into each room providing an eerie stillness, and your house quickly becomes uncomfortable. Don’t panic! Call Millian-Aire and they will have you up and running in no time! Millian-Aire is an established, experienced residential and commercial heating and air-conditioning company that has been coming to the rescue of Florida residents since 1989. Their main office has been located just off of Congress in New Port Richey since 1993, and they service all of the surrounding communities 24/7 including Trinity, and from Spring Hill to

Clearwater, Tarpon Springs to Tampa, and everywhere in between. MillianAire holds commercial licenses in six states, but their focus is primarily on helping local homeowners like you and me. Known for their entertaining commercials that feature four generations of the Millian family, this familyowned and operated organization is far more than a company with a cool name. President, Owner and Founder Howard Millian grew up in the airconditioning business with his father, Michael, who moved the family to Florida in the late ‘80s to retire. When he realized he wasn’t quite ready to retire, Michael supported Howard when he decided to follow in his footsteps and open an air-conditioning company that people could really trust. That was almost 25 years ago, and today Millian-Aire is one of the most well respected businesses in town. Back then, Howard and his father would carefully install each unit, and his mother Faye ran the office. Now, Howard, his wife Sue Millian, and their family have a staff of more than 30 qualified, experi-

Mitchell High School, largely because of their son Cody, who graduated from there. As part of Cody’s senior project, he wanted to honor his grandfather’s legacy after he passed

away from lung cancer. To do so, Sue and Howard helped him to create a foundation called the JK Cancer Fund. Sue says, “He wanted to hold a golf tournament to raise money for people who are recovering from the effects of chemo and radiation to help them get their lives back. At first, we thought it would just be our family, but the word got out and that first year we raised $10,000!” Since then, the annual JK Cancer Fund Golf Tournament, which is held each April at the Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, has raised an additional $51,000 to help local residents who are recovering from Cancer. Sue also has donated funds and Cody has volunteered for the LIVESTRONG program at the James P. Gills YMCA. Sue said, “It was important to me to be able to help the people in our community.” Call Millian-Aire When You Need Help 24/7 and 365! Millian-Aire focuses on treating their customers like an extension of their own family; that’s why when you call, no matter the hour, or the day of the week, you’ll get a real person on the other end of the phone who will

help you. So, don’t call dad, call Millian-Aire! Howard says, “During the summer months, it can be 100 degrees and we don’t let our people wait. When you call us, our NATE Certified technicians are ready. We make a point to keep our trucks stocked and ready so that we can make fast repairs.” One customer said, “What FAST service! We called two hours ago and we are already enjoying cool air. [They offer] super fast service. The technician was very knowledgeable about air conditioning. His actions were professional and personable. He was friendly and engaged in conversation other than air conditioning. He was kind to our dog also.” Howard says, “We treat people like family. Our technicians have been with us a long time and they treat each house like their own, each pet like their own, and we have a strict policy on wearing booties in the house.” Affordable and competitively priced, Millian-Aire uses a nationally recognized flat rate for repair charges, which means that their customers don’t have to haggle or worry about what things will cost. They know right up front, and when you need them, an

experienced and certified technician will be there within 24 hours to keep you and your family cool. If your technician feels that the unit is too old, or it will be too costly to repair, they might recommend you get a quote from one of their Comfort Specialists who can come to your home and help you find the right air conditioner. These quotes are free, and they do an entire energy survey on your home, measuring each window and taking into account a myriad of details. The best part is that they can be out there in just a couple of hours, especially if you are “down.” If you are in need of a new airconditioner, Millian-Aire is proud to offer six levels of Trane equipment. Howard says, “We have been a Trane dealer for ten years and we prefer them because of the quality of their equipment, but the main reason we stay with them is the customer service that they help us provide the customer after the sale. They don’t forget about their customers, and neither do we.” Robert from Spring Hill said, “Thank you Millian-Aire for resolving my HVAC problems. We love our new Trane unit and the installers were great. Hope this one lasts another 24 years. See you in six months for our service check up. I have already recommended your company to another.” The U.S. Government’s Energy website, www.energy.gov, explains, “When buying an air conditioner, look for a model with a high efficiency. Central air conditioners are rated according to their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). SEER indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a specific cooling output. Many older systems have SEER ratings of 6 or less. The minimum SEER allowed today is 13. Look for the ENERGY STAR® label for central air

conditioners with SEER ratings of 13 or greater, but consider using air conditioning equipment with higher SEER ratings for greater savings.” It can seem a bit overwhelming, but Millian-Aire can keep it simple and affordable. Millian-Aire will help you get the temperature back where it belongs, without you having to spend a million to do it. (Hey, you knew it was coming.) Customer, Miguel, said, “I’m very impressed with the quality of the work performed by the Millian-Aire Technician; his professionalism, punctuality – which is very important to me – and his politeness. I’m pretty sure I will make the Millian-Aire family my “go-to” company for any and all AC problems.” Be a Millian-Aire Club Member! It’s always better to be proactive instead of reactive right? That’s why Millian-Aire has a customer membership program called the Millian-Aire Club (MAC). The MAC club offers a wide array of benefits, and only costs $19.99 a month. The MAC Club gives its members two inspections per year, same-day service, waves any overtime charges that would normally be accrued on a late-night, weekend or holiday call, and gives you priority service over nonMAC customers. In addition, club members are eligible for discounts on repairs and new equipment, receive a detailed inspection list, and they even receive waxing of the outside unit. As an added perk, MAC members can also log on to the Millian-Aire website to view past invoices, view a quarterly newsletter with energy saving tips and even request service or estimates right online. Millian-Aire serves the entire Tampa Bay Area and can be reached 24/7 at 866-645-2665. For more information, please visit their website at www.millian-aire.com.

Janevski says, “I like the craft beers, and we happen to carry a lot of them.” In addition to carrying the big name brands in beer, Universal is known for carrying a variety of IPA beers and craft beers, which really sets Universal Fine Wine & Spirits apart. “We have a lot of Cigar City craft beer, as well as a lot of other out-ofstate, small brewery beers here,” Janevski says. “People find out we carry their hometown beer and we get a lot of customers that way. They always say, ‘I can’t believe you carry this!’ ” Craft beers are a great way to have your beer while trying something a lit-

tle different. There are craft beers in every flavor at Universal, from Cigar City Cucumber Saison Pale Ale to Southern Tier Choklat Stout Dark Ale. From pomegranate to Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Bacon Maple Ale, there’s literally a brew for everyone. Having a taste for uniquely crafted beer himself, Janevski knows that sometimes you don’t want to buy a whole lot of a craft beer until you know you like it, so Universal offers a mix-and-match craft beer special. Customers love coming in and creating a custom six-pack of all the different flavors and styles, so whether you’re looking for a pack of Bud or want to find out what a Victory Golden Monkey Belgian tastes like, Universal’s your place. Janevski says, “We give our customers a 5% discount on every sixpack of mix and match craft beer.” Wine–A Universal Language If wine is more your speed, Universal has quite an impressive selection. From vintage to sparkling, red, white and rose; wine is the language spoken at Universal Fine Wine & Spirits. Wine is available and in stock from every corner of the globe, from vineyards in

California to Australia and everywhere in between. There are hundreds of wines to suit any taste and budget on the shelf and customers love knowing that their prices are consistent. Universal Fine Wine & Spirits now has a thriving Internet business as well, so customers can order items straight to their homes. Janevski says, “You can order just one bottle or everything we have.” Beer and wine can be sent out of state, while liquor

needs to be in state. Janevski explains, “Every state has their own rules about liquor and whether or not they can be shipped in or out of state lines.” If you are always on the hunt for a particular brew or bottle of wine, Universal is known for taking special orders. Janevski adds, “We get special orders all the time. We tell our regular customers that if they want something consistently, we’ll order it in for them and put it on the shelf.” It’s this kind

of customer service that has had people talking the place up over the last ten years. The regulars are all in stock and waiting, and Universal is proud of the fact that they don’t raise prices just to knock them down. “We keep our prices consistent,” Janevski says. Spirits to Lift Your Spirits Liquors are ever-expanding and it’s not just whiskey, rum and vodka any longer. There are spirits in every flavor from blueberry to maple, and birthday cake to cherry pie. With the many high quality products at Universal, the combinations are endless. With the friendly, knowledgeable staff at Universal Fine Wine & Liquors, you can find exactly the right drink for your next big night. One customer was recently quoted as saying, “The people that work there are so nice. When we were having a luau, they helped us with drink recipes and selecting the right rums. If you can t find what you are looking for, they will try and get it for you. My husband and I don t go anywhere else for wine and liquor. They also have a great beer selection.” Another great detail that sets
