Red Cross Offers Safety Tips for Hurricanes The American Red Cross urges residents throughout Florida and communities across the country be prepared for this year’s hurricane that runs from June 1 through November 30. “Preparedness is critical when it comes to life-threatening disasters such as hurricanes,” said Linda Carbone, CEO of Florida’s West Coast Region and the Tampa Bay Chapter. “It’s important that families and individuals make time to build an emergency kit, create an evacuation plan, and download the Red Cross Hurricane App to help make it through the next storm safely.” A 2013 survey by the American Red Cross and The Weather Channel found that few Americans living in coastal counties have taken necessary action to prepare for severe tropical storms and hurricanes. Only about half of those surveyed have an evacuation plan or a plan for communicating with family members if they are separated. Nearly a third of people did not have an emergency kit with supplies. Even communities far inland from the coast can experience hurricanes de-
pending on the course of the storm, often with the threat of powerful winds and widespread flooding. In addition, strong rip currents even at large distances from the storm can threaten those at the beach many miles away. Prepare Before The Storm Hurricanes are powerful and dangerous storms. They can bring heavy rains that cause major flooding, destructive winds that down power lines, uproot trees and damage homes, and storm surges that travel several miles inland destroying everything in its path. As hurricane season approaches, it is important to know the difference between the threat levels. • A Hurricane Watch is when conditions are a threat within 48 hours. It’s then time to review your hurricane plans. Get ready to act if a warning is issued, and stay informed. • A Hurricane Warning is when conditions are expected within 36 hours. It’s then time to complete your storm preparations and leave the area if directed to do so by authorities. Now is the time for families and

individual to build an emergency kit and create an evacuation plan. Download the Hurricane App The free Red Cross Hurricane App puts real time information on hurricane safety at your fingertips. This app, which has more than 970,000 downloads, is a must have for anyone who lives in an area where a hurricane may strike or has loved ones who do. Features of the Hurricane App include information on Red Cross shelters and a toolkit with a flashlight, strobe light and alarm. The one-touch “I’m Safe” button lets someone instantly tell family and friends they are okay. People who are traveling or have loved ones in hurricane-prone areas can also use the app to receive weather alerts. The Hurricane App can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” This was just what we had in mind when we had our first Odyssey of the Mind meeting. Creativity wasn’t just a tool we carried with us while walking down this adventurous road of Odyssey of the Mind but imagination, technology, mechanics, and art were also some of the key points. That was what brought us to Iowa State University where the Odyssey of the Mind 2014 World Finals was held. It really is amazing how far we’ve made it. For the students on our team experienced with OM, making it to World was like a dream come true. We would have never imagined making it this far. Though there was lots of work involved, we’ve had many great moments together and built long-lasting friendships with one another. It’s hard to talk

about how we worked so well with each other when each us were so different. One was a serious, always working person and the other was a relaxed one. One had a brain that cooperated with mechanics well while the other did with style and art. It seemed all so sudden even though we had been working for countless evenings improving costumes, or making entirely new backdrops. It just seemed like yesterday when we were first performing our skit in front of the regional judges. All of us know that we have worked hard for that moment when we were awarded at the state tournament the highest award, Ranatra Fusca. The joy that came from earning this prestigious award is what has given us the ambition to keep going with our heads held high so that we can go not only for the experience, but for the first place trophy.” Random Acts of Flowers Celebrates 40,000th Recycled Floral Delivery Milestone & 3,700 Have Been Delivered Locally by RAF Pinellas Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), a Knoxville, TN based nonprofit charity celebrated its 40,000th floral delivery milestone on Tuesday, June 3, while locally the Random Acts of Flowers

Pinellas celebrated helping to reach the 40,000 bouquet mark by reaching its own milestone of 3,700 deliveries of recycled flower bouquets that have been delivered to local hospitals and assisted living facilities, putting smiles on the faces of patients every week. Pam Ora and Monica Kok of the local RAF Pinellas invited Neighborhood News & Lifestyles to Medical Center of Trinity when volunteers from RAF Pinellas pulled up with a van full of beautiful flowers that would mark the local chapter’s 3,700th delivery to patients who otherwise wouldn’t receive any flowers or possibly not even many visitors. Pam said, “One of the deliveries today both the patient and Leah got tears in their eyes because the patient was so shocked that she was receiving flowers. People are stunned that they

get flowers from RAF. It was sweet to see. Monica and I are enjoying the mission so much and our volunteers who make the bouquets are so happy to be here every time they come. We are now going to Bay Pines VA Hospital and we delivered to St. Joe’s Women’s hospital to high-risk moms on bed rest. It was simple and I didn’t have to stress over finding 20 different vendors to do everything.” The Royal History Owner Harry Simon Jr. was raised in St. Petersburg, didn’t set out to create one of Florida’s premier event venues, but that’s exactly what he and his wife Carmen ended up doing! The history of The Event Factory began when Simon was just a teenager who was fascinated by some of the new motorized figures that he
had seen at a local Christmas shop, which focused on elaborate train sets. Soon he was creating his own animated figures and the very same Christmas shop that inspired him soon began ordering from him and teaching him how to share his business. Simon’s company grew quickly and before long his list of clients included Walt Disney Parks, Sea World, Busch Gardens, Cypress Gardens, and Spencer Gifts, to name a few. Simon’s sets were elaborate and beautiful, and people approached him wanting to use his showroom to for special events, weddings and elaborate dinner parties, which led to him opening The Event Factory in 1996. The Castle Ballroom was complete in 1998, and people loved it. It wasn’t until Simon met and married his lovely wife, Carmen, (they had a Disney themed wedding in the Castle Ballroom where each of her bridesmaids got to be one of the princesses!) that they realized that they should create a one-stop-shop by bringing everything under one roof. People wanted to have all kinds of events at The Event Factory, so they created packages for those events as well. Kids Can Learn from the Pros at the Tampa Bay Youth Sports Expo Professional Athletes, Trainers and Sports Experts to Offer Interactive Experience; Derrick Brooks featured as Keynote Speaker On Saturday, July 19, 2014, kids of all ages with big league dreams will have the opportunity to learn from the pros at the annual Tampa Bay Youth Sports Expo presented by The Skills Center, a non-profit, sport-based youth development organization. to come on in. Maybe that’s because Wendy Watson, D.V.M and Stephany Phillips, D.V.M., truly love what they do and it shows. Kelly Omalia, who takes her kitties to Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center, says, “I love everyone [there]. They all always take great care of my girls.” When Dr. Wendy Watson was growing up in Kentucky, she thought that maybe she’d be a Vet Tech, and that’s what she went to school to study, but she was told by a professor that she should go all the way with it, and she persevered, competing for a program at Auburn University that only accepted so many. After graduating from Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, she worked at

Dr. Wendy Watson & Dr. Stephany Phillips an animal hospital in St. Petersburg for 12 years. Dr. Watson, who specializes in cats and dogs, says, “My experience there had a great influence on me. They taught me how to bond with clients and how to put pets’ needs first.” While she loved it there, it was a dream of hers to open her own animal

hospital. After a lot of hard work, that dream became a reality in 2006, and Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center was born. It’s this dogged (excuse the pun) determination and fierce approach to doing what she thinks is right and speaking her mind about it, that sets Dr. Watson apart. While wholeheartedly valuing and respecting the opinions of her pet owners, she’s a doctor you can trust to tell you what she thinks and what she would do if your pet were her own. She says, “I really try to treat people the way I’d treat my mom, and the way I’d treat my own dog.” She adds, “I also tell people what I would do to my own dog, but I respect people’s decisions and wishes even though they may be different than my own.” Birds of a Feather Stick Together with Dr. Stephany Phillips! Dr. Stephany Phillips is originally from Clearwater, but her journey to become a veterinarian took her to Georgia, where she attended Georgia Tech, and then to Australia where she earned a Veterinary Medicine degree from Murdoch University. After returning to the United States, she worked at a nearby veterinarian and
avian hospital before joining Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center a year ago in 2013. Dr. Phillips says, “It’s so homey here. There’s a level of friendliness and support for our clients, their pets and their families that is unique.” While she works with dogs and cats on a day-to-day basis, Dr. Phillips specializes in exotic animals like birds, reptiles, rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Dr. Phillips says, “Exotics are harder to take care of because they’re not like cats and dogs, and many of them have very specific diets, habits and needs.” Passionate about detecting disease, slowing it down and stopping it if possible, Dr. Phillips takes heart in protecting animals from suffering. Give Your Business a SMARTstart in Pasco By Dara Tucker SMARTstart, which is managed by the Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc., is the first program of its kind in Pasco County. It is basically a business incubator – giving small businesses a way to have a bigger presence. At SMARTstart, startup companies work in a collaborative environment with other small businesses, enabling them to enjoy some of the benefits of a larger company without the overhead costs. SMARTstart residents have 24/7 access to an office space, as well as co-working space with free Wi-Fi, a mailbox, conference room space, seminars and classes and one-on-one mentoring. Another bonus is that SMARTstart residents have access to network with other businesses, local organizations and community partners. Entrepreneurs who may be working in their garage or from their kitchen tables, and are trying to start a business in Tampa Bay can look into SMARTstart. Startups can occupy office space up to six
months for free through the SMARTstart program and discounts are available for college students starting a business. This new innovation helps businesses start up and grow in Tampa Bay. The Small Business Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce reports that only 20 percent of new businesses are still in operation after the first five years, largely due to under-capitalization and lack of management skills. In contrast, a series of landmark evaluations of Economic Development Administration (EDA) funded programs revealed that 87 percent of all incubator graduate firms remain in business after five years. My mom and I stopped by Central Park Family Restaurant for lunch recently, and our sandwiches looked so yummy that we each just had to have a taste of the other’s sandwich. Mom had the Chicago Beef Sandwich, with savory sliced roast beef, mozzarella, sweet peppers on a warm toasty roll and au jus dipping sauce on the side. I tried more than a few bites because it was absolutely delicious and melt in your mouth good! I ordered “The Murph” piled high with sliced corned beef, pastrami, Swiss cheese, grilled onions and bacon served on a warm pretzel roll with a side of spicy mustard! The kitchen at Central Park does not skimp on flavor or portions – I was stuffed and still had half a sandwich to take home! Curious as to whom “The Murph” was named for, I asked Chris and was intrigued to find out that several menu items are named after frequent customers who wanted to have it their way – and their way turned out to be yummy! “The Wendy” is an all-natural ground turkey burger topped with mozzarella and avocado on a pretzel roll and is now not only Wendy’s favorite, but a lot of other people’s too.
