Trinity Family Physicians – “Let Our Family Care for Yours” By Kim Thomas

Amir Shirmohammad, M.D. & Stephanie Eldridge, M.D.

Our health can directly affect the quality of our lives now and in the future; therefore, it is pertinent to find a physician that you can trust to provide the proper guidelines for a healthy life; one that will prescribe needed medication with care and caution, and when necessary, one who will order the right diagnostic tests and see that you receive the best care possible if the need for a specialist or a hospitalization arises. You’ll find all of that and much more in the healthcare professionals at Trinity Family Physicians, located at Trinity Professional Place at the corner of Trinity and Duck Slough Boulevards in Trinity.

Living by their motto, “Let Our Family Care for Yours,” husband and wife team Amir Shirmohammad, MD, MPH, and Stephanie Eldridge, MD, MPH, offer exceptional general medical care as well as a variety of specialties that include dermatology, preventive medicine, adolescent concerns and all aspects of women’s health and gynecology. Their patients range from adolescents to those in the final years of a long life. Serving patients in our area since 2007, Dr. Shirmo (as patients affectionately call him) and Dr. Eldridge just celebrated their practice’s four-year anniversary in September. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge not only embrace their patients, they have thoroughly embraced their commu-

nity as well. I met the couple three years ago in 2009 when they were cochairs for Gulfside Regional Hospice’s Hike for Hospice. Witnessing firsthand how down-to-earth they both are and the genuine care they have for others, we chose them to be the doctors for our family and have been very happy. As a mom to two young adults and one teenager, I know how important it is for a young person to have a doctor that they truly connect with. My boys love the See “Physicians” on page 42.

Spice Fight – Boycotting Can Make A Difference! By Kim Thomas There is a real problem permeating small towns and big cities alike throughout the U.S. and that is the availability of synthetic drugs that are intentionally marketed as incense, but are actually a dangerous potpourri of potentially deadly chemicals. This is a nasty epidemic that is threatening our Country. The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that they received 6,959 calls related to synthetic cannabinoids in 2011, up from 2,906 in 2010. Spice and K2 are sold in little packets with bright packaging and catchy names; often hidden behind the counter of unscrupulous stores and sold by code name. These readily available products have been sprayed with synthetic cannabinoids and are manufactured in Asia and then sold in local markets throughout the U.S. including gas stations, liquor stores, convenient stores, smoke shops, or on the

internet under the names “K2,” “Spice,” “Chronic Spice,” “Spice Gold,” and “Spice Silver,” “Scooby Snax,” and many more names. Bath Salts is another synthetic drug that is readily available under names like “Purple Wave,” “Zoom,” and “Cloud Nine,” to name a few. These extremely dangerous drugs are a central nervous system stimulant that can cause episodes of extreme psychosis. If you thought these products were outlawed, you are partially correct. Some have been banned but the manufacturers keep coming up with new chemical compounds, essentially staying one step ahead of the laws. Law enforcement officers and government officials alike are gravely concerned, and have stepped up efforts to stop the sale of these products. Recently the House and Senate agreed on legislation to control 26 synthetic drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. These drugs include those commonly found in products mar-

keted as “K2” and “Spice.” Meanwhile, a group of parents in Pasco County have had enough and are protesting and calling for the boycotting of stores that choose to sell synthetic drugs. Since this issue extends into all of our communities, I want to share what is being accomplished by a small group of folks in New Port Richey. Business owners and concerned parents Erik and Colleen Suojanen organized the first protest on May 6th at the Metro Gas Station located at 9011 Little Road in New Port Richey. It was attended by at least 40 protesters carrying signs and was covered by Fox 13 News, ABC Action News, the Tampa Bay Times and Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. Every Wednesday since then, protesters have showed up at numerous stores with signs that read “This Store Sells Poison to Kids” and “Please Boycott This Store.” See “Spice Fight” on page 4.

“Spice Fight” Continued from page 3 The Suojanen family has started sending emails to those interested in joining the protest which detail which stores are selling synthetic drugs and where the protests will be held. They are asking that at least one responsible adult male be present at each protest location. Also, those who are participating in the protest are asked not to park in the store’s parking lot, not to block any entrances, and absolutely not to confront or engage in confrontations with store owners, employees or customers. This group is trying to, peaceably and legally, make a difference by hurting these stores’ bottom lines. “Please consider having your family join our family in the fight against the substance known as Spice,” says Erik Suojanen. “Spice is synthetic marijuana that is sold to teens in many mom and pop beverage/gas stores as well as several BP gas stations. It’s a chemically laced substance sold as incense in little cartoon Kool-Aid type packages with names like “Mary Joy Dead” and “Berry ’d.” This substance is 30 to 50 times more potent than

4

marijuana, is very addictive, is killing kids, AND IT’S LEGAL! The stores that sell this stuff know exactly what it’s being used for and they DO NOT CARE. If you would like to help rid our community of this poison, please e-mail me at eriks@yourplumbers.com and I will add your name to our updates list. The child you save may be your own.” With people getting on board to boycott offending stores, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has come up with a new sticker program as a way to make it easy for residents to identify the morally responsible stores that do not carry synthetic drugs. Sheriff Nocco was joined by state and county leaders at the Suncoast Mobile Gas Station, 16055 S.R. 52 in Land O’ Lakes, for the unveiling of the new sticker. Event attendees included Senator Mike Fasano, Representative Richard Corcoran, Representative Will Weatherford, and county leaders. The Suncoast Mobile gas station and convenience store was the first to receive a sticker for their door or window that reads in part, “Synthetic Drugs Kill These Drugs Are NOT Sold Here.” To receive a sticker, store owners or managers must sign a letter of agree-

ment provided by the Sheriff’s Office stating that they will not sell the items. “I commend Sheriff Nocco, parents and others who are working diligently to rid our community of bath salts and spice,” says Senator Mike Fasano. “It is sad that no matter how hard we try to outlaw these dangerous substances, greedy people continue to create new compounds so they can skirt the law. It is vitally important that parents be made aware of the scourge these substances are. Sold as supposedly benign substances, they are intentionally are misused, often with serious consequences. The number of hospitalizations due to abusing these substances is rapidly increasing. Hopefully the community will band together and force the stores that carry these products to pull them from their shelves. What little money the store may make is hardly worth the physical and emotional damage they cause, especially to the young and impressionable.” Senator Fasano continues, “While Tallahassee will continue to try staying ahead of the curve in its efforts to make more and more compounds illegal, it truly takes the active involvement of families, leaders and the busi-

JULY 2012

ness community to impress upon vendors and those who purchase these items, that they are dangerous substances that do more harm than good. I hope that as we continue to work together we can one day look back and see that the lure of spice and bath salts has faded and their availability has dried up.” There are many stores that would never carry these products. Make sure you are spending your money at stores where the management has morals. “They are working on this at a legislative level to get this outlawed,” says Erik Suojanen. “Please do not wait for others, government or otherwise, to solve this problem. It’s our problem. I don’t care if it’s legal – they know what it is they are selling. It’s morally corrupt and not only that – it is evil!” Perhaps if this idea – of boycotting and “outing” stores guilty of selling Spice, K2, Bath Salts, or any other upcoming new synthetic legalby-a-loophole substances that are actually dangerous drugs – is kindled in small towns across the states, it will fire up and spread across the U.S. Then the power of American consumers will overcome those greedy store owners.

It was the “elite of the elite,” a competition of winners that had placed first, second, or third during the 2011/2012 season. Students

Girls and boys ages 12 through 18 competed in three age divisions as they played 18-holes, and those ages 6 through 11 played in the 9-hole championship. The tournament began at the later part of May on a Saturday with a

shotgun start. Playing conditions were excellent with sunny skies and mild temperatures. Besides parents and family members, the huge gallery of spectators included senior residents from the local community. The course designed in 1979 has a level of difficulty due to the water or other hazards on most of the holes. But it was not too difficult for many of the GTJGA

TOC young players including fifteen year-old Summer Moser, who finished first in the Girl’s 16 – 18 division, with her best round ever. Besides a new putter, Summer dedicated her round to “her ball striking being good, and hitting a lot of greens to let her make par.” While all competitors agreed that the greens were playing tough, it was

first place finisher Bianca in the girls’ age 11 to 13 division who revealed her philosophy for the TOC: “playing one hole at a time.” The historic event and GJTGA tour provides a positive learning environment for girl and boy golfers of all levels, ages six to eighteen. Numerous PGA or LPGA professionals of today began their start in the golf world with this non-profit association. “This is without a doubt, one of my favorite events for the players and it provides them with a challenge to play against fellow top juniors in their age bracket, many of which are friends,” stated GTJGA Board member Tim Glennie. The nearly sixty kids that played enjoyed the challenge, annual banquet, awards and raffle that immediately followed the TOC competition. According to 2nd place finisher eleven year-old Alexis Dross, who competed in a 9-hole division, she liked 3 things best: (1) the trophies, (2) shape of the course, and (3) the friends she has made while playing golf. While all who participated in the TOC are “winners” for trying their best, the list below shows the young golfers who shot low rounds as 1st place TOC finishers:

18-Hole Division Winners: • 16 to 18 year-old girls Summer Moser 72 - 72 • 11 to 13 year-old girls Bianca Sol Cruz 90 - 101 • 16 to 18 year-old boys Christian Anderson 73 - 70 • 13 to 15 year-old boys Mike Stewart 71 - 72 • 11 to 13 year-old boys Travis Wells 72 - 71

9-Hole Division Winners: • 6 to 10 year-old girls Julie Zharg 80 - 80 • 6 to 10 year-old boys Grayson Maddox 80 - 80 As part of the annual tradition, at the TOC Championship, 2012 GTJGA Players of the Year were recognized: Tyler Bakich for the Boys, and Summer Moser for the Girls. When asked about the impact golf has had in her life, Player of the Year and TOC Champion Summer responded: “It (golf) taught me how to not give up and know that every stroke counts, and you can’t leave any opportunity untaken on the golf course.” According to Summer this sport is the only thing that challenges her. “I can never

Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre Combines Expertise with Treatment care treatments, facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels that will improve the appearance of your skin. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre combines Dr. Johnson’s medical expertise with the many fantastic aesthetic treatment options that are available today for patients who want to look and feel better about their skin.

By Julie Kanehl Considering the fact that your skin is your largest organ, and that it faces a variety of harsh conditions throughout your lifetime, it is important to know where to turn for outstanding dermatology care. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre, located in the Trinity Professional Place plaza at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. is dedicated to treating skin conditions of all kinds including skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, rashes, wrinkles and more. Patients who come to Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre see Brian T. Johnson, M.D., a Board Certified Dermatologist who has been treating local patients since he opened his first practice nearby in 1990. Since that time he has built an impressive reputation for truly listening to his patients, providing exceptional care, and getting incredible results. Dr. Johnson has been seeing patients for more than 22 years at his original office, located on Grand Blvd. in the Richey Medical Center. Four years ago, in addition to his New Port Richey office, he opened Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre in Trinity to be more centrally located to the many surrounding communities, including East Lake, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Tampa. On staff at the new Medical Center of Trinity as well as North Bay Hospital, Dr. Johnson is a trusted dermatologist in the community. Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor

10

Brian T. Johnson, M.D. of Science degree and his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Iowa, and completed four years of residency before moving to Florida. Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Johnson knew he wanted to be a doctor, but he never intended to be a dermatologist. “As a doctor [in residency] you rotate through all of the specialties,” said Dr. Johnson, “I was impressed with the preciseness and expertise that was required of dermatologists. That’s when I knew that was what I wanted to do, and I find it very rewarding.” Together with his two Certified Physician Assistants, Marijana Cejkova and Tonya Terwilliger, Dr. Johnson treats everything from skin cancer to acne and wrinkles. Dr. Johnson says, “We take the time to get to know our patients, and we listen to what their concerns are.” In addition to medical treatments and medications, Jessica Banes-Pyles, a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who is affiliated with Dr. Johnson offers a wide variety of skin

Treating Acne to Wrinkles and Everything in Between According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and just like other forms of cancer, it can be life threatening. That is why it is so important to see a qualified dermatologist, like Dr. Johnson, about anything on your body that doesn’t look right. It’s critically important that people pay attention to changes in their skin, changes in moles, or the appearance of anything that won’t heal. These could be signs of cancer, and these skin changes don’t always appear in places that receive sunlight! Skin cancer can appear anywhere on your body. “Our goal is to treat cancer as simply, easily and cheaply as possible,” says Dr. Johnson. “Prevention is our number one focus, followed by early diagnosis and treatment.” In addition to traditional skin cancer treatments, Dr. Johnson has a new state-of-the-art piece of equipment called the BLU-U. The BLU-U is a quick and affordable way to treat pre-cancerous Actinic Keratoses or AKs as they are more commonly

known. AKs are rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by too much exposure to the sun. Dr. Johnson also uses the BLU-U to successfully treat other skin conditions like acne as well. According to Dr. Johnson, 90 percent of teenagers get acne, and there’s truly no reason to suffer with the many topical and oral medical options that are out there. Treatments now are so good that they can often see a patient just once as opposed to asking them to come back again and again. “We give a treatment and we expect that to work.” He adds, “Left untreated, acne is destined to get worse.” People of all ages get acne, and Dr. Johnson can help. Thankfully, with today’s treatment options, getting rid of acne can be simple and painless. People who live with conditions like eczema or psoriasis don’t have to suffer. Dr. Johnson says, “Psoriasis is the second most common skin ailment behind acne.” For example, Dr. Johnson says that there are two new treatments for people who have a thick psoriasis plaque. The most affordable and most common treatment is to give Intralesional Injections, and if more treatment is necessary there are other options like Immune Modulative medications. While wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, growing old gracefully doesn’t mean that you have to grow old with wrinkles! If you have wrinkles that you are concerned about, Botox and injectible fillers are a great alternative to plastic surgery and they often have dramatic

effects. Dr. Johnson says, “These treatments are a lot less aggressive and side effect prone.” These simple, quick and effective procedures are done right on the premises. Trinity Dermatology uses the Cynosure Elite, the most comprehensive laser hair removal system available today. Since it’s designed for all skin types, it is used to treat the broadest range of clients. The Cynosure Elite laser system is optimized for effective treatment of facial and leg veins, as well as benign epidermal pigmented lesions (sun spots) with easy, safe, effective and fast results. Most skin types will improve with a noticeable difference in 3-4 weeks. “We are here to help with anything that has to do with your skin, hair or nails,” says Dr. Johnson. Trinity Aesthetic Centre Services Jessica Banes-Pyles is a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who performs a variety of aesthetic services aimed at improving the look and feel of your skin. Treatments are available for both men and women that change the appearance of your skin even after one treatment, and you don’t even have to be a patient of Dr.

Jessica Banes-Pyles, Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician Johnson’s. “We do facials and deep pore cleansing treatments, as well as a variety of microdermabrasion and chemical peels.” Jessica, who went to the Florida College of Natural Health, has been working at Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre since 2009. She performs popular treatments such as facials for her clients, which leaves their skin silky smooth and glowing. Jessica offers a variety of facials, including a customized facial that is specifically created around her customers’ preferences and skincare needs. For acne-prone skin, a Deep Pore Cleansing Facial is a fantastic way to clear your face of impurities.

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

This kind of facial includes cleansing, exfoliating, extractions and a corrective mask which will leave the skin looking and feeling amazing. The Trinity Facial is a popular facial at Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre because it combines a deep cleansing facial with a head, neck and shoulder massage. Chemical peels are used to really change the appearance of your skin. Results include brightening, tightening and a lightening of the skin, and it can only be done by a professional like Jessica, who says, “I analyze and recommend a skin care regimen for each of my clients.” According to Jessica, microdermabrasion helps with large pores and reduces fine lines and wrinkles while brightening the skin. Microdermabrasion involves resurfacing the skin by gently passing microscopic abrasive crystals along the surface of the face. Jessica says, “This treatment is great to have prior to an event because you don’t have to go through the peeling process associated with chemical peels; it’s a great alternative.” Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre offers two very distinct skin care lines, trusted by dermatologists all around the world. Obagi Medical is the #1 physician-dispensed, prescription strength skincare line in the world. The Obagi Medical line can transform your skin by evening out skin tone by reducing age spots and pigmentation in the skin, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles as well. Jessica and Dr. Johnson trust the Obagi system and are very confident that at the end of the 12-18 week Obagi Medical program, your skin will look and feel younger and healthier. “All ages, all skin types, there’s an Obagi for everyone.” – Obagi Medical

Trinity Aesthetic Centre also provides the #1 wholly organic line of skin care called Eminence, handmade skin care from Hungary that is clinically studied and made completely of certified organic fruits, vegetables, fruits, seeds and leaves. Jessica says, “Eminence is what I use right now. There are no parabens or harsh chemicals in their products and cleansers, toners and eye creams.” She adds, “You’re not going to find anything as pure as Eminence, you could eat it!” Right now the Trinity Aesthetic Centre is offering a number of specials, including 1/2 off the price of your first treatment. Trinity Aesthetic Centre provides each of its clients with a free reward card that allows them to save on future facial treatments. Whether you are concerned about an unusual change in your skin, have concerns about a skin condition, or are interested in having a pampering facial treatment, the Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre is a trusted choice for all of your dermatology and skin care needs. Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood - a new, must-try restaurant in Palm Harbor!

Coastal Charm in Your Backyard By Katie Thomas Fresh Gulf Coast favorites are easy to come by and readily available thanks to Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood restaurant in Palm Harbor. Laidback and designed to encompass a casual neighborhood feel, Ugies’ atmosphere allows patrons to feel as if they are enjoying a fun Florida gathering in a neighbors backyard with quick, casual dining flair and ice cold beverages in-

cluding beer, wine and Ugies’ sangria. Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood opened this year on March 21st with a goal to serve steamed, grilled, smoked and boiled seafood to the community in a locale that embraces a rustic Gulf Coast look and feel. Owners David and Lisa Ulgenalp live in Tarpon Springs with their sons Alex and Jonathan. Alex is working on his degree in hospitality at Florida State University and has paired his newfound

business knowledge with his parents’ restaurateur background to create Ugies fabulous menu. The Ulgenalp’s daughter Jessica also works in the service industry in New York City as a marketing promoter for a high-end establishment. Dave has 35 years of experience in the restaurant business and served as VP of Franchise Sales and Development with Checker’s and Panera Bread as well as a multi-unit franchisee of Panera Bread and bd’s Mongolian Grill.

The Ulgenalp family household in Tarpon Springs has always been a gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy each other’s company in the midst of fun backyard shrimp boils and smoke outs. After realizing that there weren’t many places in the area offering fresh backyard barbecue-style seafood, the Ulgenalp family took their living style and turned it into a uniquely fashioned dining experience for all in the community to enjoy. Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood follows a quick casual dining format that

is similar to Panera Bread franchises. You will be greeted with a friendly smile and directed to the menu board and cashiers. Pick out your favorite Ugies dish, give the cashier your name and soon you will be chowing down on some delicious cuisine. Whether you choose something steamed, boiled, grilled or smoked – you can rest assured that your choice is healthy, because unlike many seafood restaurants, Ugies focuses on serving fresh seafood that isn’t deep-fried. David and the Ugie crew smoke all smoked menu items fresh daily and receive most seafood from local vendors;

Ugies’ seafood is healthy and fresh featureing smoked and grilled seafood of Florida’s Gulf Coast guaranteeing the salty, savory, moist combination that befits a wonderful meal of fresh seafood. Sit down and enjoy Ugies’ awesome taste while you listen to a mix of Cajun, reggae or country music while you eat. The first time I visited Ugies, I thoroughly enjoyed checking out the coastal photographs on the walls within the restaurant that showcase David’s friend’s photography. Ugies Smokin’ Good Delicacies Ugies’ simple and delicious menu offers traditional Gulf Coast favorites. Once you try the fresh mullet or salmon that is smoked in-house daily, you’ll be sure to find yourself back for more to satiate your cravings for smokin’ good food. David says, “Our smoked mullet brings people from as far as Tampa, Lakeland and Brookesville. We sell a ton of it and people say it’s the best around!” Steamed Peel’ n’ Eat shrimp are perfectly pink and seasoned with southern favorite Old Bay Seasoning for the perfect, melt-in-your-mouth seafood meal. I’m a huge fan of steamed crawfish and Ugies’ crawfish gives New Orleans a run for their money with the perfect amount of spice and juiciness that is necessary to make a crawfish boil right. Grilled fish and shrimp tacos are a favorite menu item at Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood. Tacos are topped with shredded cheddar cheese, red cabbage, diced tomato, red onion and Ugies’ Sauce to make the perfect combination of flavor and freshness. Along with grilled fish, Ugies offers grilled chicken breast sandwiches, hamburgers, grilled cheese and a choice of grilled shrimp, fish or chicken atop of Ugies Wedge Salad with diced tomato, red onion and crumbled bacon. Yum! Coastal favorites that will warm your belly and your soul include Three Pepper Crab Bisque, Spinach and Smoke Salmon Chowder, Buffalo Chicken Mac’ n’ Cheese, Shrimp n’ Cheese Grits, Red Beans and Rice, Jambalaya and Garlic Shrimp Pasta. Ugies Smokin Good Seafood embraces everything wonderful about southern-style cuisine found along the

Gulf Coast. From corn bread to appetizing smoked fish spread to taste-bud tantalizing side items; Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood allows diners to feel right at home with a warm meal and an upbeat friendly atmosphere. The Ulgenalp family prides themselves on being able to get to know customers to find out what they like and what they want to see on the menu to make Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood a place of complete satisfaction. David says, “One of us is always here. Our commitment is to talk to our customers and get to know the faces coming in and out.” You will find David behind the counter, cooking on the grill, greeting customers and bussing tables on any given day – he stays fully involved in order to succeed in his mission to provide priceless customer service, quality staff leadership and satisfying food that will keep patrons coming back for more. Customer A. Raven says, “Really excited we found a new place close to home. Even better…the food is great! It’s nice to get fast, quality food that’s not fried! Two thumbs up to Ugies. The only thing missing is sand and some sun on my face!” The Ulgenalp’s welcome everyone to come in and try their version of coastal cuisine. Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood’s great atmosphere is only outdone by its even better food. You will be impressed! Enjoy the charming, rustic feel and dig in to some tasty seafood that will have you reminiscing about summertime shrimp boils and seafood cook-offs! Dance Extreme Academy

Remarkable Teaching & Outstanding Dancers By Dara Tucker After watching “Dancing with the Stars” or “So You Think You Can Dance” I often question how do they do that – how can they dance such complicated, modern moves, with precision and grace? Once I visited Dance Extreme Academy, located in Trinity just off Mitchell Blvd. near Prestige Dentistry, I had a much better

18

understanding. Dance Extreme Academy is not anything like dance studios of the past. They teach techniques and skills that kids are excited about and motivated to learn, because it’s like what they’re seeing when they turn on the TV. Darlene Jones opened Dance Extreme Academy two years ago. She was inspired to give her daughter and other dancers a premier studio where

they could focus on learning the modern type of dances they wanted to learn. Darlene assembled an amazing staff to keep the studio moving forward in the world of dance. Marketing Director Stacey Wyman and Erica Kuzniczci are the friendly faces you meet at the door each time you drop off or pick up your dancer. Darlene and her staff continually work to create a studio where kids, from beginners to competition level dancers, feel comfortable and have fun, while parents know their children are being taught by experienced and knowledgeable teachers in a safe environment. Meet Dance Extreme Academy’s Instructors Artistic Director Julie Walek has taught dance and acro (acrobatics that include floor gymnastics, tumbling, and contortion) for over 17 years winning both local and national competitions for her choreography. Using her experience and knowledge – she earned her degree at the University of Buffalo where she studied Dance Curriculum - this dynamic teacher puts her heart and soul into creating a diverse dance curriculum for the studio. Teacher Jillian Michaels has been

She is an ABT® Certified Teacher, who has successfully completed the ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. Always moving forward, Dance Extreme Academy will offer even more dance class variety, with five talented new teachers starting in the fall. Michael Jones is a dance performance major at USF and will be teaching new

styles of dance including break dancing, pop and lock and krumping. Amy DiBongrazio, a dance major at USF, will be teaching jazz, lyrical and contemporary. Griff Whitehurst, a graduate of University of Tampa who currently dances with local Tampa Bay companies, will be teaching tap and advanced musical theatre. Rosie Easterling, a competitive dancer and student teacher since nine years old, will be teaching three- to six-year-old classes. Mallory Rieger, a former intern at Dance Extreme Academy, will be teaching musical theatre and beginning acrobatics this fall. Designed for Dancers Girls and boys alike love the

amenities at Dance Extreme Academy. There are stylish, current clothing items and dance accessories such as dance bags, leotards and tights available in the boutique area. A large area called “The Café” provides a zone where kids can do their homework and eat a snack, or parents can watch their dancer in the studio through a large flat-screen TV that takes live action video of the classes. There are two different studios; both feature walls lined with mirrors and ballet bars, as well as low-impact dance floors and beautiful natural lighting. Julie explains, “It is important to us to have the correct floors that will protect our dancers. When young children are jumping the floors

help to absorb some of that impact, so their knees and bodies will continue to be healthy as they mature as a dancer.” The studio has a lively, upbeat feel that makes you feel like you are in the company of friends. Friendship and camaraderie among the dancers is so important to the staff they even made it part of their mission statement: “We will also work to provide each dancer with an education that instills poise, grace, self confidence and more importantly, memories and friendships to last a lifetime.” From beginners to competition level, Dance Extreme Academy has a place for every dancer, even adults! All students can perform in their yearly dance recital, and there are performance dancers who perform at various community events. This is ideal for students who enjoy performing beyond the yearly recital, but are not able to make the full commitment to competitive dance. The studios’ highly successful competitive group is formed based on student auditions, and has placed in the top ten in every competition they have gone to, many times in multiple numbers. Recently, Dance Extreme Academy won a Technical Excellence award at the 2012 Creation Dance Championship; it was one of only three studio awards presented. Students also have won scholarships for outstanding dancing to compete nationally in New York. Another fabulous learning opportunity at Dance Extreme Academy is in the master classes. Any student from the community can sign up to take a class with an instructor from a local touring theatre company. Several times throughout the year, the academy brings in professional dancers – such as Kentrell Newton of MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” – providing a remarkable opportunity for

dancers. This year the master classes are featuring dancers from Jekyll and Hyde, Wicked, and Flash Dance. Sharon Rodd’s two daughters take numerous classes at Dance Extreme Academy, and she has been very impressed with the instruction they both receive. “The teaching quality and choreography is fabulous. It’s a very family friendly environment. It’s the furthest thing from a competitive dance show environment where kids are mean to each other. Of course everyone likes winning, but what’s most important is their experience – the teamwork and friendships they’ve developed. My girls can’t wait to go there every day.” Fall classes start August 6 (and follow the Pasco County School calendar). Join Dance Extreme Academy on Saturday, August 4, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. for their Open House Registration Celebration. They will have face painting, games, balloon creations and raffles. In addition, you can look at the studio and meet the instructors, including five new instructors that are joining in the fall, and register for classes. Ballet, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, tap, combo, pointe, musical theatre, modern, stretch and tone, and leaps and turns are all different classes available at Dance Extreme Academy. From beginners to competition level, kids to adults, girls and boys (boys dance at 50 percent off!) – Dance Extreme Academy can meet your dancer’s needs. If you would like more information about Dance Extreme Academy or their Open House Registration Celebration on Saturday, August 4 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. call 727-375-JAZZ, visit www.DanceExtremeAcademy.com or stop by 1645 Davenport Dr. in Trinity.

Need a New Roof or Roof Repair? Get it DONE RITE By Katie Thomas Hurricane season is upon us and after Tropical Storm Debby we all realize that a solid foundation and the roof over our head is impertinent to our safety and wellbeing. When the time comes for your home to be reroofed or it is in need of a roof repair, you need to hire a reputable, licensed roofing contractor who provides fast, and reliable, affordable service, and most importantly, you need a roofing company that will do the job right! Done Rite Roofing, Inc., located in Ozona, is a family owned and operated roofing company that has been serving Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties for over 15 years. Jason and Christina Loiacano are the owners of Done Rite Roofing and they have worked diligently to build a reputation that is as solid and strong as the roofs they build and guarantee. They never use subcontractors and with Done Rite, you are always working with an owner. Jason and

Christina make sure to fulfill their goals in being a part of your community and are active within the local schools, SPCA, sports leagues and other community organizations. Recently Done Rite Roofing paired up with Habitat for Humanity for Pasco and completed their first job, donating their labor and expertise to a family in need. Done Rite Roofing has done roofing work for municipality buildings in the Cities of Dunedin and Oldsmar and is a chosen installer for Home Depot’s roofs. “Over the years, we’ve done all the Humane Society of Pinellas’ (HSP) and the SPCA’s roofing work and have donated materials, giving them a greatly discounted price,” says Jason. Jason and Christina are originally from Buffalo, NY, and these two high school sweethearts have spent the past 21 years working to build a life together and a business. Jason worked for a family owned roofing company in Buffalo as a minimum wage laborer, where he worked his way up to fore-

man. As a teenager, he came to Florida on a fishing vacation with his dad and knew it was where he wanted to be. Christina shares their journey, “Jason had to wait for me to finish college before we could move to Florida and start our journey as business owners.” Jason and Christina have two

Christina adds, “Their loyalty is like no other.” “Our tile crews have all been certified with the Roof Tile Institute and currently Done Rite Roofing is the only company in Pinellas County with that certification, which is the highest certification in tile roofing,” explains Jason. In Florida, building codes change every few years and Done Rite and its employees are on top of every new change. “Our installers are sent to training seminars to get all of the latest techniques and be up on all current codes,” says Jason. “Our shingling division is in the top 1% in the roofing profession because our installers have their ShingleMaster certification. A select ShingleMaster is in the top 1% of his profession and to qualify the installers take written and onsite tests every year.” Done Rite Roofing recently became involved in blowing and attic installation, which reduces energy costs up to 30% and once performed, can

allow homeowners a tax credit. Done Rite is currently offering up to $300 off a shingle roof if homeowner has been active in the military or is currently active. This offer lasts for the rest of the year and is a way for Done Rite to show their gratitude to all those who have served in the armed forces. Done Rite is a Red-Shield installer from Firestone Building Products; Jason explains that means he can offer 20-year non-prorated material, labor and workmanship warranties on Firestone roofing systems. Done Rite Roofing has launched the most comprehensive, detailed warranty available in the roofing industry today. Together with manufacturers, they are able to offer customers good, better and best warranty options and the peace-of-mind of knowing that their warranty is completely transferable to the new owner of their home if they decide to sell. Done Rite has your back, guaranteed! No matter how big or small your project is, Done Rite Roofing can tackle the job and do it RITE! “We’ve done whole subdivisions and have worked with many property management associations,” says Jason. “We can do work as minimal as adding a new skylight to roofing a commercial shopping plaza.” Done Rite is constantly updating promotions and specials on their website, Facebook and twitter account. Sharpen Your Writing Skills and Start Your Novel By Tamara Rokicki Have you ever wanted to write a novel? Do you simply enjoy writing a few short stories or detailed journaling? If so, East Lake Community Library in Palm Harbor has the perfect opportunity for you as it is officially hosting their first NaNoWriMo event. NaNoWriMo (November National Writing Month) was originally created in 1999 by freelance writer Chris Baty. Its goal has been to help writers boost their creative writing and to find a community of support for those who love literacy. Beginning every November 1st through November 30th participants are challenged to write a 50,000-word novel in just thirty days. By signing up on www.nanowrimo.org writers can register a free account, find a community of fellow writers, provide support and inspiration, and utilize tools to improve their writing skills. The month is dedicated to meeting the word count and focusing on

26

writing as much as possible. Writers often get stuck on editing their stories and planning out every chapter with the utmost accuracy. During NaNoWriMo the inner editor is temporarily disconnected. The casual approach to writing a novel in thirty days ensures that the writer is simply focusing on what matters most: writing. This process encourages creative writing by removing unnecessary pressure, such as plot critiquing, grammatical accuracy and detailed

outlines. Although these are all valid steps to publish a novel or to complete a decent literary work, it should not become overbearing and obstructive during the writing process itself. Leaving behind structural confinements, the writer can unleash an overflow of imagination, creating characters and plots undeterred by restraints. The true challenge lies in the high word count and that is the motivational force behind the writing wheels.

East Lake Community Library will be hosting a free NaNoWriMo Camp in August as a precursor to the November event, when it will officially open its doors to the community. By providing a casual and inspirational setting to write a novel, East Lake Community Library strives to make the write-in productive and enjoyable. The camp will be held on August 11 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The first hour will be dedicated to a series of writing exercises and tools to inspire each participant to think outside the creative box. The remaining part of the session will allow participants to simply write. For more information and to register please contact Tamara Rokicki at tirokicki@gmail.com. The registration deadline for the camp will be August 1st and late registration may not ensure seating availability. John believes in keeping things interesting by mixing up the activities every day, playing games, and creating new obstacle courses. “Exercise needs to be fun,” says John. “When exercising is fun, the success rates soar!” By keeping the exercises lively and different, North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp is a fun way to reach your goals of looking good, being healthy, and feeling great.

John’s guarantee is that “you will love Adventure Boot Camp, make new friends, lose weight, and get stronger …or your money back!” You will be challenged, you will have fun, and you will see results! Meg, another of John’s boot camp attendees, said, “Boot camp is one of the best things I have ever done for myself. I had back pains; they’re gone. I tried everything, went to every doctor. I tried everything short of surgery. My pain is gone from working out and strengthening my muscles. I’m sleeping at night. I’m losing weight. I’ve made lots of friends. I had a great time at boot camp. I’ll be back!” John has designed this boot camp for women of all ages; however, the majority of the women who attend boot camp are in their thirties, forties, and fifties. Sue Park, a woman in her 70’s, was enrolled in the very first North Pinellas Adventure Boot Camp, and has been attending regularly ever since. “This camp keeps me alive!” says Sue. The next boot camps start July 23 and continue through August 10 with three different camps offered at differ-

All of Salon Solei’s stylists are experienced, talented, and dedicated to assisting you in finding the perfect combination of color, cut, and care specific to your individual style. An educated, fashion-forward staff is what you get when you walk into Salon Solei. Tina, one of Solei’s Redken Certified Stylists, has worked in the industry 25 years in three different states. best looking feet on the block! “Customer satisfaction has always been, and remains to be, our number one priority here at Salon Solei,” says Marissa, “because without our clients, we’d be nothing.” Rendering exceptional service every time isn’t the only way Marissa

and her staff provide their clients with the best service. Salon Solei is constantly running promotions for its customers, along with the Salon’s Loyalty Club –a free club to join that for every dollar spent in the salon, clients earn points that they can use toward services or products. By signing up for Club Solei, clients will also receive coupons on his/her birthday as well as rewards for referring friends. A lucky client and their stylist recently won Nook Colors by the client simply purchasing a Redken or Pureology product and being entered in a drawing! Another neat thing that Marissa does is an ongoing promotion for her stylists; every time a stylist provides a Redken Chemistry Treatment on one of their clients, 100 percent of the profit goes into a bank for the stylists’ education fund. Several of the stylists at Salon Solei have already booked their tickets to the Redken Symposium in Las Vegas from their chemistry treatment earnings. What an awesome way to motivate stylists and clients alike! Long-time customer Jeannine Davis, who has been coming to the salon for the past seven years, says she will continue to come back because

she knows she is going to get the best service for her money. “I don’t just have one person that does my hair here. I am confident that any of the staff will take good care of me. All of the girls here are friendly and accommodating,” says Jeannine. Marissa attributes much of Salon Solei’s success to her younger brother, Ryan Levy. For the past three years, Ryan has managed the salon while Marissa has spent most of her time at home raising her two little ones. Over the past several years, Ryan has developed and maintained a prominence within the East Lake Little League community; Salon Solei sponsors a team each season, while Ryan donates endless amounts of his time coaching. “Ryan has brought Salon Solei to new heights,” says Marissa, “and the clients and staff love him.” While working hard at Salon Solei, Ryan has also managed to complete his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. The time has now come for Ryan to expand his horizons. He has accepted a position with a local Fortune 500 company, and is looking forward to meeting new challenges in the business arena. “Managing Salon Solei over the

past few years has been a valuable learning experience and has given me the opportunity to meet many extraordinary people in the East Lake area,” says Ryan. “I will miss working with a talented group of women as well as interacting with the wonderful clients I have had the pleasure of knowing.” Marissa adds, “I am truly grateful for Ryan’s contributions and commitment to Salon Solei over the years. Without him, Salon Solei wouldn’t be what it is today. His leaving is bittersweet; as his boss I am sad to see him leave our team, but as his big sis, I am so happy for him and proud of who he has become. I know he will be successful in his future endeavors. He will be greatly missed by myself, clients, and staff alike.” Upon Ryan’s departure, Marissa will once again be managing Salon Solei, and looks forward to being an active part of the salon’s con-

tinued growth and success. Salon Solei offers clients the opportunity to book appointments online (www.salonsolei.com) as well as appointment confirmations via text message. Brides Against Breast Cancer™ Charity Wedding Gown Dress Dash – Find The Gown Of Your Dreams And bring Education, Information and Outreach to Someone Affected By Cancer By Alexis Selby Dresses upon dresses lined the racks as hopeful brides swarmed in anticipation and excitement for the chance of a lifetime – the opportunity to find a beautiful designer wedding dress at a price 25-75% off the retail tag. Brides came from all over the Tampa Bay Area to the Best Western Bay Harbor Hotel in hopes of finding the dress of their dreams, the dress that they will wear as they walk down the isle on the most important, significant day of their lives. This event, the Brides Against Breast Cancer™ Charity Wedding Gown Dress Dash, is just one of the many events that are held throughout the country each year; that not only help brides-to-be find the perfect wedding gown, but also aid in bringing education, information and outreach to those affected by cancer.

About Brides Against Breast Cancer™ is an amazing non-profit organization that contributes to programs for cancer patients and their families. Because of their outreach and educational efforts during their Tour of Gowns bridal shows, they have been able to help ensure that people impacted by cancer have the re-

sources and information they need in their ongoing battle. “Brides Against Breast Cancer’s mission complements and supports our wideranging services and programs,” says Carl Ritter, CEO, Center for Building Hope (CBH), which recently acquired the organization and moved its national headquarters to Sarasota. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation is the foundation who assisted CBH with the project’s start-up funding. “At Gulf Coast, we look to strengthen nonprofits in our region so they can better meet their missions,” says Teri A. Hansen, President and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Founda-

tion. “We are pleased to help the Center for Building Hope make this revenue-generating opportunity possible. It’s a proactive plan that will result in more vital services for our community.”

Nationwide Tour of Gowns Known for its original Nationwide Tour of Gowns bridal shows, Brides Against Breast Cancer™ holds more than 50 shows a year, with an average offering of 1,000 or more new or gently worn designer dresses. Attendees are offered free information about programs and services available to cancer patients and their family members. More than half the gowns presented during each event are new designer gowns that have arrived directly from designers, manufacturers and bridal retailers.

Donations Over the years, the Brides Against Breast Cancer™ program has received more than 50,000 wedding gown donations, with an estimated resale value of over four million dollars – this is incredible! “I just wanted to take a moment and tell you that having the opportunity to donate my wedding dresses to Brides Against Cancer just became an even bigger honor,” states Chandra Black. “My mother passed away this past Monday because of complications from her breast cancer. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to do something that honored my mother!” Wedding gown sales are an important fund-raising event for Brides Against Breast Cancer™ and their yearly shows provide brides-to-be with a unique opportunity to find their dream gown at a remarkable price, while contributing to services that provide support, education and hope to men and women affected by breast cancer. The worldwide support of designers, manufacturers, bridal shops and individuals (who donate a most treasured possession and/or volunteer

their time) are what make the Nationwide Tour of Gowns possible. The proceeds from these events contribute to programs for cancer patients and their families. Most gown prices range from $99 to $799, including hundreds of beautiful new name brand and designer gowns valued up to $8,000. Exclusive designer and couture gowns valued up to $20,000 are also available at an incredible 25% to 75% savings!

“Physicians” Continued from page 1 frank, honest discussions and advice that they receive from Dr. Shirmo, who really seems to ‘get’ them, offering confidentiality and medical care, along with a good dose of humor. My daughter finds Dr. Eldridge to be easy to talk to about women’s healthcare and says she likes her better than any other doctor she has known. Continually finding ways to help the community, Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge completed their third year as co-chairs for the Hike for Hospice. Residents of nearby Heritage Springs honored Drs. Eldridge and Shirmohammad with an award for their participation in the Bonefish Charity Golf Invitational for members of Heritage Springs. The plaque hangs prominently in Trinity Family Physicians’ waiting room and is inscribed with a heartfelt ‘thank you’ by a patient, Bob Docherty, who is a resident of Heritage Springs. Mr. Docherty catches the true spirit of these two dedicated medical professionals with these words— “What they believe…they believe passionately.

What they love…they love deeply. Their compassionate practice has been an enormous benefit to our community, with a powerful impact to our quality of life, and its mighty weight will endure. Their hearts are awakened and all of us and our families are the (beneficiaries).” Getting to Know Trinity Family Physicians Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge take time with each patient, getting to know them by name and as individuals. Their goal is to make you feel like you have a doctor in your family. With two precious little girls of their own, Jasmine and Lily, they know how important it is to have a doctor that you can trust, turn to and talk to. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge first met when they were both 17, while working summer jobs at Busch Gardens and became high school sweethearts even though they attended separate high schools in Tampa (Dr. Shirmo graduating magna cum laude from Jesuit High School and Dr. Eldridge graduating from King High). They did attend Tulane University in

Dr. Amir Shirmohammad (back) & Dr. Stephanie Eldridge (front, center) & their staff celebrated Trinity Family Physicians’ 4th Anniversary in Sept. New Orleans together and both graduated cum laude from Tulane with Bachelor of Science degrees in Cell and Molecular Biology. While they both had plans to go to medical school, they were interested in public health and the study of epidemics, so they both received Masters Degrees in Public Health in Epidemiology at Tulane before attending and graduating from medical school at Tulane Medical School in 2003. and their careers, the pair completed their Family Practice Residencies in 2006 at Florida Hospital, a Christian and “faith-based” hospital in Orlando. Though the doctors had many choices available to them after completing their residencies, they decided on this area partly due to the stateof-the-art Medical Center of Trinity, which just opened this winter. Bay hospitals, and knowledge of specialists and all hospitals in the area, Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo will make certain that you get the care you deserve. “I send my patients to the hospital that best meets their specific need,” says Dr. Shirmo. “But our focus is preventive medicine to keep patients out of the hospital.” Dr. Shirmohammad also is the Medical Director for Madison Pointe, a nursing home, and he is very compassionate and sensitive to the feelings and needs of older patients. He says, “For every patient that I see in there, I vow to help their kids and grandkids to get the preventive care they need for life-long health.” Dr. Eldridge and Dr. Shirmo have brought a new member into their healthcare “family” and welcome Nurse Practitioner Nicole Zweifel. Knowing these two for some time now, I realize how difficult the choice must have been for the doctors to bring in someone to help care for Trinity Family Physicians’ patients. “It is like letting someone take care of your baby,” explains Dr. Shirmo. “We wanted to be able to

provide more services and more accessibility, but it had to be someone who we completely trust. Nicole is a great fit. She has over 10 years in healthcare, she can write prescriptions and her experience as an ER nurse makes her well-equipped to handle just about anything.” Nicole attended St. Petersburg College, where she graduated magna cum laude in 2005. She went on to earn her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2007 from the University of South Florida in Tampa, where she was honored with an Outstanding Achievement award. She has extensive nursing experience, including eight years as an Emergency Room Registered Charge Nurse at Bayfront Medical Center. Like Drs. Eldridge and Shirmo, Nicole is very attentive and thorough in her examinations. So far, three of my family members (including myself) have seen Nicole and we agree that she is approachable and friendly.

are going to be able to get quick appointments, usually the next day, and all patients will receive excellent care. “We are getting more and more families, and more people are trusting in us,” says Dr. Shirmo. “We have been busier than ever. Stephanie and I are just so proud and privileged to be here. This is such a great area. There are just such great people here, with so many good things going on in the area.” Even though Trinity Family Physicians has grown and added staff, the care patients receive is only en-

hanced. Dr. Shirmo and Dr. Eldridge want patients to know that the doctor is still in the house! “Stephanie and I are still here just as much and we are still just as involved with our patients as ever.” Trinity Family Physicians is located at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. at 1817 Cypress Brook Drive, Suite 101, in Trinity. Wounded Trinity Marine Accepts Customized Vehicle from Sun Toyota By Diane Galemmo You may recall the story we did last year about U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Justin Gaertner, the Trinity marine who suffered the loss of both of his legs, and a severe injury to his left arm, when an improvised bomb exploded beneath his feet in Afghanistan in November 2010. Gaertner, now 23, and a 2007 graduate of Mitchell High School in Trinity, went through intensive therapy with passionate determination and motivation. While it normally takes a person about six to nine months to learn how to walk on artificial legs, Justin Gaertner did it in three. Justin now has eight pairs of prosthetic legs. He can walk, surf and snowboard and recently won silver medals in the 2012 Warrior Games. On Memorial Day, a day on which we honor those who served our country, Justin was picked up at 10 a.m. by The Florida Patriot Guard Riders, who escorted him in POWMIA formation from his home in

He was very impressed with Justin’s attitude and determination, so when Toyota approached Amira saying they wanted to do something special for a veteran on Memorial Day, he immediately knew Justin would be the perfect choice. (The WVA advocate for, and assist, wounded veterans dealing with physical and psychological injuries suffered on the battlefield).

Gaertner says he is planning to attend school at Florida State College in Jacksonville, concentrating on homeland security and business. He had words of wisdom to recently injured veterans. “There’s always going to be someone there to help you.” Sun Toyota has opened a page on its website, www.suntoyota.com/soldier.html where Justin’s story can be read and donations can be made towards the cost of his customized vehicle.
