Spice Fight – Boycotting is Having Effect in Pasco By Kim Thomas There is a real problem permeating small towns and big cities alike throughout the U.S. and that is the availability of synthetic drugs known as Spice, K2 and Bath Salts. These products are sold in local markets throughout the U.S. including gas stations, liquor stores, convenient stores, smoke shops, or on the internet. Bath Salts are a central nervous system stimulant that can cause episodes of extreme psychosis and is sold under names like “Purple Wave,” “Zoom,” and “Cloud Nine,” to name a few. Law enforcement officers and government officials alike are gravely concerned, and have stepped up efforts to stop the sale of these products. Recently the House and Senate agreed on legislation to control 26 synthetic drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. In Pasco County, some folks have had enough and are protesting and calling for the boycotting of stores that sell synthetic drugs. Erik and Colleen Suojanen have started an email list to notify people of offending stores and

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

organize protests with signs that read “This Store Sells Poison to Kids” and “Please Boycott This Store.” Through email, if you choose, you can be notified of offending stores that sell synthetic drugs (sometimes under code name) and where the protests will be held. Organizers are asking that at least one responsible adult male be present at each protest location. Participants are asked not to park in the store’s parking lot, not to block any entrances, and absolutely not to confront or engage in confrontations with store owners, employees or customers. This group is trying to, peaceably and legally, make a difference by hurting these stores’ bottom lines. “Please consider having your family join our family in the fight against the substance known as Spice,” says Erik Suojanen. “Spice is synthetic marijuana that is sold to teens in many mom and pop beverage/gas stores as well as several BP gas stations. It’s a chemically laced substance sold as incense in little cartoon Kool-Aid type packages with names like “Mary Joy Dead” and “Berry ’d.” This substance is 30 to 50 times more potent than

marijuana, is very addictive, is killing kids, AND IT’S LEGAL! The stores that sell this stuff know exactly what it’s being used for and they DO NOT CARE. If you would like to help rid our community of this poison, please e-mail me at eriks@yourplumbers.com and I will add your name to our updates list. The child you save may be your own.” Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has come up with a way to make it easy for residents to identify the morally responsible stores that do not carry synthetic drugs. On June 22nd, he unveiled a new sticker program with stickers that read in part, "Synthetic Drugs Kill These Drugs Are NOT Sold Here." To receive a sticker, store owners or managers must sign a letter of agreement provided by the Sheriff's Office stating that they will not sell the items. Perhaps if this idea – of boycotting and “outing” stores guilty of selling synthetic drugs – is kindled in small towns across the states, it will fire up and spread across the U.S. Then the power of the American consumer will overcome the greed of some unscrupulous merchants.

So Delicious! So Good For You! By Marcy Sanford I really enjoy going out to eat but sometimes find it hard to find healthy options at restaurants. That is why I was so happy to discover Bangkok Sushi located in the Northpointe Village on State Road 54. With its combination of delicious, flavorful Thai food and fresh expertly prepared sushi, Bangkok Sushi offers a huge variety of food that tastes great and is good for you too – the perfect combination! The food at Bangkok Sushi is delicious and everything is

made fresh to order. The friendly wait staff is very helpful and the inviting dining room is decorated with beautiful exotic statues, woodcarvings, wall hangings and ornamental pieces – many brought over from Thailand. Bangkok Sushi has been open since July 2009 and owner John Chieopanich says he sees many return customers and enjoys getting to know them. Thai cuisine is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. In fact, several Thai

dishes, such as Tom Yum Soup, have been studied for their incredible health benefits. Many of the fresh herbs and spices used in Thai cooking - such as turmeric, galangal, coriander, lemongrass, and fresh chilies - have immuneboosting and disease-fighting power. If you’ve never tried Thai food you are in for a culinary treat, and if you have had it before, you will find this to be some of the best authentic Thai food you’ve ever eaten. You can choose from one of the scrumptious Chef’s Specials like Crispy Duck, Volcano Chicken, Salmon Panang or Volcano Lobster. If you like curries, they make delicious ones at Bangkok Sushi including red, green and yel-

low curries, Massamun curry and my favorite – Panang Curry. They have noodle dishes including Pad Thai – the popular Thai noodle dish of stir-fried rice noodles with egg, scallions, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts and tamarind sauce. At Bangkok Sushi they use very little oil when stirfrying or sautéing the meats and vegetables in their dishes, in fact many of the vegetables are steamed. Bangkok Sushi has a section of vegetarian dishes on the menu, plus almost every dish can be made vegetarian. On the night we went, I had the Tornado Tofu and my husband had the Yellow Curry with Chicken. Both dishes were a delectable blend of flavors. You can designate how spicy you want your food from one star – coward,- to four stars – Native Thai. In addition to the more than 40 entrees for you to choose from, Bangkok Sushi offers many appetizers like egg rolls, spring rolls, dumplings and satay, traditional Thai salads and

Bangkok Sushi has unique rolls, such as the kanisu roll (at left) with krab, avocado and masago wrapped in thin cucumber slices in a rice vinegar sauce heavenly soups. We had the wonderful Tom Yum soup – hot and sour soup with straw mushrooms, lemon grass, galangal roots, kaffir lime leaves, tomato and lime juice and the delicious Tom Kha soup – coconut milk soup with straw mushrooms and lime juice. One of the reasons Thai food is so tasteful is the herbs and spices used during the cooking process. A great Thai chef knows the timing of when to add food and spices so that everything is cooked to perfection and the flavors blend together. Becoming experienced at Thai cooking can take many years and most of the chefs at Bangkok Sushi began learning the intricacies of Thai food when they were growing up in Thailand. Sushi is another great tasting and healthy option when you are eating out.

In general, fish provides a lean source of low-calorie, high quality protein. It’s also low in saturated fats and cholesterol, making it a heart-healthy food choice. Salmon is especially high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to improved cholesterol levels, lowered blood pressure and decreased risk of abnormal heart rhythms. Tuna also has omega oomph. The thin sheets of seaweed, or nori, which are flattened, cut and wrapped around maki and hand rolls, contain mighty minerals. Iodine, essential for proper hormone function, is abundant in this dried sea vegetable. You’ll also get the benefits of magnesium, calcium, iron and folic acid from eating rolls wrapped in nori. The head sushi chef at Bangkok Sushi trained for many years at a five

star hotel in Thailand. He orders the freshest fish available and expertly turns it into edible, mouthwatering works of art. John says most of the customers who come to Bangkok Sushi order both sushi and Thai food. You can start your meal off with one of their many specialty rolls like the sunny tuna or the three sum. If you want to make sushi your dinner, you can choose from one of Bangkok Sushi’s Sushi or Sashimi dinners or you can pick and choose the rolls you want from their extensive list. The sushi we had was fabulous. We especially enjoyed the kanisu roll – krab, avocado and masago wrapped in paperthin cucumber slices in a rice vinegar

sauce. Several of the customers I talked to who were eating sushi said it was the best sushi they had ever had. If you’re in the mood for a delicious, healthy meal, Bangkok Sushi is the place to go. Bangkok Sushi is located at 16541 Pointe Village Dr., #101 in the Northpointe Village off of State Road 54. The restaurant is open for lunch: Mon.–Fri., 11:30 a.m.–3 p.m., and for dinner: Mon.–Fri., 3– 10 p.m., 4–10 p.m. on Sat., and 4– 9 p.m. on Sun. Suncoast Urgent Care in Trinity Celebrates its 5th Anniversary By Kim Thomas Suncoast Urgent Care, located at Trinity Village Center, is proud to be celebrating its 5th Anniversary this month. Peter C. Duic, MD, and John P. Opyoke, MD, drew upon their extensive experience as emergency room doctors when they opened the urgent care facility, originally named Trinity Urgent Care, on July 16, 2007. Drs. Opyoke and Duic decided to change the name of their practice in order to have more uniformity when they opened a second location in July 2009 on Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill. Both facilities are open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are both residency-trained in emergency medicine and both doctors are Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine; important because they are both specifically trained to handle all kinds of emergencies. “We opened as ER doctors, seeing how much could be cared for here,” says Dr. Duic. “We’ve become an inte-

12

gral part of the community and have a wonderful group of people. It’s really a pleasure to be able to care for patients here.” At far less cost to the patient than a visit to the hospital ER, the doctors at Suncoast Urgent Care treat everything from common colds to broken bones. The doctors designed the facility with the technology to care for urgent needs, and additionally, they made it comfortable and pleasant for patients and families – a place where they would want their own children treated. Suncoast Urgent Care is not meant for life-threatening emergencies. Rather, it provides quality medical care in a state-of-the-art facility for patients who are sick or injured but who do not require emergency room measures. Onsite digital x-ray, EKG, lab testing, IV fluids and medications from the onsite pharmacy make it even more convenient for patients and cutting down on travel, time, and cost. You can get immediate results for strep, mononucleosis, urinalysis and more. A major procedure room is set up to handle splinting, suturing and casting. The competent and caring medical team in-

cludes physicians, nurse practitioners, RNs, medical assistants and x-ray technicians. Suncoast Urgent Care has affiliations with off-site radiology providers that can provide more advanced imaging such as CAT scans and MRIs, on the same day, if necessary, and get the report studies back on the same day. Dr. Duic and Dr. Opyoke know the best specialists in the area and many times can set the appointment immediately when they see that a patient needs to see a specialist. “We provide a lot of follow-up with patients in the nearby neighboring communities,” says Dr. Duic. “We make sure the loop is closed and we don’t just refer patients blindly.

We will help facilitate a prompt followup. A lot of businesses in the area send their employees to us so we are taking care of them as well.” For the convenience of local businesses, Suncoast Urgent Care provides Occupational Medicine, such as drug testing and Department of Transportation physicals, as well as treating workrelated injuries for local retail, service, industrial and corporate businesses. Suncoast Urgent Care also offers specialized health services such as weight loss through Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss, as well as smoking cessation. Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss was the Gold Winner in The Suncoast

News’ 2011 Best of Suncoast contest and Suncoast Urgent Care was the 2011 Silver Winner in The Suncoast News’ Best of Suncoast contest; both are favorites in the running for this year’s contest for which winners haven’t been chosen yet. Perhaps the best source to listen to about the quality of care at Suncoast Urgent Care comes from its patients. Even though my family has a great family physician, we have turned to the convenience and quality medical care at Suncoast Urgent Care several times over the past five years – the most recent being a quick, inexpensive, yet thorough school sports physical. Hear what patients have written on comment cards: • “Excellent, caring and friendly service.” • “We have come to know and trust your facility and staff. Everyone is always so wonderful.” • “Always a pleasure to come here and they treat you like family.” • “1st place I go with any problem.” • “Love the coffee machine and staff!” • “Awesome job! I would come here again.” • “I am so happy you are in the neighborhood.” • “I always feel comfortable bring-

ing my children here, thank you.” Suncoast Urgent Care provides patients with an immaculate and beautifully designed medical center equipped to treat nearly any emergency, but also designed to provide the Trinity community with convenient and competent healthcare and wellness care. Suncoast Urgent Care has two locations: 10730 SR 54, Ste. 104, in Trinity and 4112 Mariner Blvd. in Spring Hill. Hours are 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Mon. – Sat., and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sun. Stay Cool This Summer With

Air Rescue offers air conditioning and heating service and installation 24/7! By Marcy Sanford The dog days of summer are here and for those of you who know Florida, know the heat isn’t going to let up anytime soon. But, as long as you can escape into a nice cool house, you can handle the heat. The trained professional technicians at Air Rescue are here to help – whether you are in need of a new air conditioning system or just need some repairs and fine-tuning made to an already existing unit. In business since 1946, Air Rescue provides full-service air conditioning services, heating repair and installation. They have

technicians on-call 24-hours a day, 7 days a week and can service all brands. Air Conditioning units have to work extra hard in the Florida heat and Air Rescue wants to make sure your A/C runs smoothly and coolly all summer long. Air Rescue’s Total System Rejuvenation guarantees that your A/C system won’t breakdown and can save you as much as $150 on your electrical bill. During the Total System Rejuvenation, a certified technician takes the A/C apart, cleans and lubricates all the parts, adds Freon to the system and makes sure everything is done to extend the life of your system, keeping your A/C in tiptop

shape. If you have problems with allergies or asthma, the indoor air quality specialists from Air Rescue will give you a complimentary system evaluation. According to Scott Scarboro, Marketing Director for Air Rescue, there have been important changes and improvements made to ductwork over the years. “Older ducts were textured, which allowed dust and allergens to get trapped and build up inside, contributing to allergy and breathing problems,” states Scott. “Newer ducts are smoother with no place for biological matter to get trapped and can help reduce allergens.” Sometimes old ductwork can also pre-

vent your home from getting all the cool air your A/C unit is blowing out. If your system is capable of blowing out more air than can get through your ductwork, your system will work harder which could cause problems down the line. You are also paying for cold air that you aren’t getting. The professionals at Air Rescue will measure airflow and temperatures at both ends of your system to make sure everything is compatible, ensuring that your system is running efficiently and that you aren’t paying for something you’re not getting. A/C units have become much more efficient over the past six years. If

your system is more than eight years old, a new unit could save you enough money on your electric bill to end up paying for its self in the years to come. The A/C experts at Air Rescue will also analyze your home and energy needs and will find the system that will work best for you and your family. “I had a complete system installed in my home by Air Rescue. They were very professional, and I’m very happy with what they have done for me,” states customer Wade. If you do find yourself with an A/C unit that has completely broken down and needs to be replaced, Air Rescue will do their best to install a new A/C unit the same day or at the latest by the next day, ensuring you won’t have to sweat it out for too long. Air Conditioning is an essential necessity in Florida and Air Rescue encourages you to make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible so you don’t end up having to spend extra money on your electric bill – helping you to avoid issues that could have been prevented. Some signs to look for that may signify an A/C problem are vents that are sweating or have condensation on them or an air handler that freezes up or won’t turn on. If your electric bills have increased from what they were last year, this could also be a sign that your A/C is not working like

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

it should. If you are having any of these problems or just want to make sure your A/C is operating at maximum capacity and efficiency for the summer, give Air Rescue a call and let their experienced technicians analyze your system. In addition to NAT certification, all the technicians at Air Rescue go through extensive in-house training and regular continuing education courses to make sure they are up-todate and knowledgeable about the latest A/C repairs and technologies. Since 1946, Air Rescue has been Tampa Bay’s choice for full service air conditioning and heating repairs. With Tampa’s largest fleet of uniformed service technicians, Air Rescue has established a reputation for being on time, doing it right the first time and offering 24/7 availability. They can help you reduce your energy bills and improve your indoor air quality. They are highly rated by the Upper Tampa Bay Better Business Bureau and on Angie’s List. They service all of Tampa Bay and the areas around it within a 40-mile radius. License # CAC1813365. Air Rescue has many locations throughout the Tampa Bay Area. Yvonne’s Café Keeps it Simple, Fresh & Delicious! By Kim Thomas You know that a restaurant has great food, hearty portions, fast and friendly service, and is affordable when its patrons include both locals and folks who work in the area enough to know where to get the best food at the best price. When you visit Yvonne’s Café in Odessa, you are likely to see diners walk in and place their orders without even looking at a menu. Yvonne Baio and her daughter Amanda greet customers by name and know them well enough to know their preferences. Bruce, a regular customer who also is a pilot and airplane enthusiast, explains what people love about Yvonne’s Café, the well-known family café and catering company since 2004. He says, “It’s just a great place to come in. They have a regular clientele, a friendly atmosphere, and really good food!” Yvonne says, “They call us Cheers without beers!” And, you’ve heard the expression “if walls could talk.” Well, at Yvonne’s Café the walls do tell a story. I loved all of the photographs

displayed and asked about them. Every one has a story behind it. There are photos of horses at shows, local celebrities, race car drivers, BMX bicyclists, athletes and just regular folks who have come to love the homey, sunny eatery. Yvonne is a dedicated Tampa Bay Rays fan, so there is interesting Rays memorabilia in the mix. Located on North Mobley Road at Fox’s Corner in Odessa – next to Annabelle’s, a fine furnishing store and landmark in Odessa since 1980 – Yvonne’s Café serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Saturday. Yvonne’s Café also has an extensive catering menu and now offers Amanda’s amazing pastry creations and extraordinary cakes for every occasion. Amanda grew up right here in the Odessa area, going to local schools and serving in her mom’s restaurant until she left for college. Now she is back, with a degree in Patisserie and Baking that she earned in May 2012 from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando. Amanda worked at Walt Disney World restaurants including

Kouzinna by Kat Kora, The Living Seas at Epcot, and in the bakery at Beach Club Resort where she pursued her internship; she has brought her knowledge and experience back to her hometown and is taking orders and building up her business with Yvonne and Amanda Baio plans to open her own bakery. The Dog House – Your Dog’s Home-Away-From-Home By Alexis Selby For the past four years The Dog House, a full-service doggy daycare located on Tarpon Springs Road in Odessa, has been providing the community with something truly unique—a home-away-from-home where your dog will enjoy supervised play with other friendly dogs and the freedom to venture around, just like at home. Boasting 11 extremely spacious cagefree suites, over an acre and a half of beautiful fenced-in yard, and a highly trained staff of caring individuals who will give your dog the attention he/she deserves, The Dog House offers plenty of room for your dog to roam and play in a friendly environment that your dog will love. For centuries dogs have been thought of as ‘man’s best friend,’ and at The Dog House, that is exactly how your dog will be treated! Your dog is in good hands at The Dog House, as both owners, Jamie OccHionero and Sony Zorek, have many years of experience working with dogs of all breeds, and treat every dog as they do their own – with love! My husband and I have been bringing our two dogs, Marley and Ziggy, to The Dog House for the past three years and would never consider taking them anywhere else – they love it that much! As soon as we pull up, Marley and Ziggy go crazy with excitement and can’t wait to run inside. For them, it truly is a home-away-from-home, where they can socialize and hang-out with all their doggy friends. Based on real customer spending behavior, The Dog House Boarding was recently rated 86/100, making it #1 ranked for Pets in the Odessa Area – even more proof of how great The Dog House really is! The Dog House welcomes all

dogs, of all shapes, sizes and breeds and the best part is, there is no need to worry about fights – before your dog is put with a pack he/she is carefully studied to determine which pack will match your dog’s personality best. Any dogs exhibiting aggressive qualities will not be put with other dogs. This has proved to be extremely successful for maintaining friendliness amongst all the dogs. Additionally, Jamie has spent numerous hours socializing dogs to teach them how to gain and maintain positive relationships with other dogs. Even aggressive dogs are trained to be calm and friendly with other dogs! Here, dogs are treated more like guests at a resort. They are continuously rotated in and out of the spacious fenced yard, limiting the time spent inside and during summer, the dogs are rotated out of the hot Florida sun in 15 to 20 minute intervals to prevent overheating. Mist machines also are used to provide the dogs with a refreshing cool down. Over the past year, Sony and Jamie have made some great renovations, including the addition of new water stations and a new Splash Station water pond, which comes fully equipped with a water fountain and was specifically designed by Jamie to contour to the shape of a dog, making it comfortable and safe. They have also revamped their landscaping, adding more trees and bushes to provide shade on those hot summer days. At the Dog House your dog’s safety is their main concern, which is why they have replaced their chain-link fences with six-foot aluminum bar fences. These taller fences provide added security and prevent dogs that like to jump from getting over the fence. Some dogs, believe it or not, are actually able to climb the regular chain-

link fences – well not anymore! The Dog House is cage-free optional so your dog will be housed cagefree if you prefer. The cage-free option allows dogs (unless they are aggressive with other dogs) to be kept in Dogs love to run, play and socialize at the beautiful, spacious, open rooms and shady property at The Dog House in Odessa where, despite amount of time. North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center Celebrates 20 Years of Trusted Pediatric Care By Julie Kanehl Having a good pediatrician for your child is one of the most important decisions that a parent can make, and many questions can arise. Are they Board Certified? Are they knowledgeable? Do they listen and spend quality time? Are the doctors accessible? Can I get a quick appointment? Will my child like going to them? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes at North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center. If you have lived in our area for any stretch of time, and have children, chances are you are already familiar with North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center. The practice began in 1992 when a few very well respected doctors in the area decided to combine their practices into one. Drs. Thomas Hennessy, Dean Fauber, “Dino” Pantages and James Dwyer opened a practice in Palm Harbor, and before long NPCMC became so popular that they thought about expanding. Named for

its primary location in Palm Harbor, North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center, or NPCMC for short, now has three locations and 16 (entirely) Board Certified Pediatricians that provide caring, high quality pediatric care in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. The Trinity NPCMC, located at 10537 S.R. 54 between Duck Slough Blvd. and Longleaf, opened in 2008 and is convenient to many surrounding areas including Odessa, Port Richey, Lutz, Land O’Lakes, East Lake and more. The North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center of Trinity is family focused and extremely children-friendly. Their spacious underwater-themed lobby makes everyone feel at ease when they come to see the doctor. Children love to look at the beautiful “Finding Nemo” saltwater fish tank, and can enjoy watching their favorite TV shows on the wall-mounted televisions while they wait. There’s even a separate “well-baby” room for new mommies and their infants who come in to see their doctor for the first time, and for well visits.

Doctors You Can Count On From Birth to College The entire staff at NPCMC is focused on making each visit a good one. A family favorite for providing sameday sick visit appointments, easy checkins, and short wait times, it’s the doctors who truly make any medical practice. Families are busier than ever these days, so they find that many children

are being seen at quick clinics by other kinds of medical personnel. Unlike many practices, pediatric and otherwise, where patients see a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner, every appointment is with a doctor at NPCMC. First of all, they all work together, and while NPCMC has been known for excellence some parents feel comfortable seeing whoever is available at the practice, in pediatric care since 1992 some like to see their very favorite The Pediatricians at the Trinity one! Either way is fine at NPCMC. NPCMC have a combined experience “We are a very diverse group of of over 100 years, and enjoy being able doctors,” says Dr. Grover. “We have to consult with one another. My children have seen doctors at their different locations, and I am grateful that there is a NPCMC located in Trinity. When my children are sick, I can count on them. I know that I will be able to see a doctor right away, and I know that if I call the office with a question, that a nurse will call me back shortly. If you are thinking of having a baby or are pregnant, it’s important to schedule a prenatal consultation. Those are easy to do at NPCMC, and knowing that your infant will have fantastic care from their very first day is a huge relief. On staff and with access to Newborn Nurseries at The Medical Center of Trinity; Morton Plant Mease Hospital in Clearwater; Mease Countryside Hospital in Safety Harbor and the Florida Hospital of North Pinellas (formerly known as Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital); families know that they can depend on these doctors to be there when it matters most. Baby well visits, vaccinations and physicals are an important part of a child’s life, but often after the age of six, doctors don’t see the kids very often anymore unless they are sick. Dr. Hennessy says, “We want to stress the importance of yearly physicals.” With serious health issues affecting kids these days from obesity and type-2 diabetes,

it’s important to have a pediatrician who knows your child well enough to be on the lookout for changes. As I mentioned before, I was a patient at NPCMC when I was a teenager, and my children now come here. The doctors in this practice truly take pride in watching their patients grow up and have children of their own. This is a huge testament to the longevity of doctors at NPCMC. The doctors here become part of your family. Young children, teenagers, and parents alike, all enjoy coming to North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center. “We want you to have confidence in the care we provide for your child, and we want you to know that we provide good quality care,” says Janice Banks, NPCMC’s friendly office manager. “Your kids are healthy and safe at NPCMC.” North Pinellas Children’s Medical Center of Trinity is located at 10537 S.R. 54 in New Port Richey. It is open Mon. – Thurs., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Fri.; and as needed on Sat. and Sun. For more information, please visit www.NPCMC.com, and to schedule an appointment call their office at (727) 376-8404.
