Fairway Pizza Too, on Seven Springs Boulevard at Oak Ridge Plaza, originated over 20 years ago and has become a local legend. It’s one of the area’s great business success stories. Jason Cogdill, the owner, started working for the original Fairway Pizza in Palm Harbor in 1989 as a dishwasher. With hard work and a great business sense Jason moved up the ranks and became manager; working

at both the Palm Harbor and newly opened Trinity location (back before the area was called Trinity!). In 1994 Jason bought the Trinity location, with all of the same great recipes and quality service that the original Fairway was founded on. Now, over 18 years later Jason’s still dedicated to using the best and freshest ingredients which allows the flavors to speak for themselves and keeps customers coming back again and again.

Look For This Sticker Before You Buy Since our story last month about the availability of synthetic drugs such as K2 and Spice, some important changes have come about, both nationally and locally. Our local law enforcement is diligent in efforts to stop stores from selling these products. On June 22nd, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco unveiled a new sticker program to inform citizens about synthetic drug-free stores to help reduce the sales of these dangerous products in the community. Sheriff Nocco was joined by state and county leaders at the Suncoast Mobile Gas Station, 16055 S.R. 52 in Land O' Lakes, for the unveiling of a new sticker program that will alert customers about stores that do not sell synthetic drugs. Event attendees included Senator Mike Fasano, Representative Richard Corcoran, Representative Will Weatherford, and members of the Pasco County Commission, Pasco County School Board, and the Pasco Alliance for Substance

Abuse Prevention (ASAP). The Suncoast Mobile gas station and convenience store was the first to receive a sticker for their door or window that reads in part, “Synthetic Drugs Kill These Drugs Are NOT Sold Here” To receive a sticker, store owners or managers must sign a letter of agreement provided by the Sheriff's Office stating that they will not sell the items. Recently the House and Senate agreed on legislation to control 26 synthetic drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. These drugs include those commonly found in products marketed as "K2" and "Spice." And, on July 12, President Obama signed the Synthetic Drug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012 into law as part of S. 3187, the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act, providing a critical boost to our nation's efforts to address the threat of synthetic drugs. The legislation bans synthetic compounds commonly found in synthetic marijuana (K2, Spice), synthetic stimulants

(Bath Salts), and hallucinogens, by placing them under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act. Look for this sticker to know you are supporting stores that care about consumers.

Students Instrumental in Getting Sidewalk Constructed Four years ago, several students in a service learning class called Lead the Pack, an elective class taught by Cynthia Tehan at Seven Springs Middle School led an effort to get sidewalks constructed on busy Little Rd. in Trinity along the Mitchell High and Seven Springs Middle School route. Three of those students, Zoe Pappas, Danielle Kuehner, and Chelsi Macklin have graduated from Seven Springs Middle School (they are attending the adjoining Mitchell High) but their efforts have now paid off as the project they initiated years ago is nearing completion. For the past several months, Pasco County has been installing a shareduse path, wider than a sidewalk, so bikes can be ridden on it. The path will be located on the west side of Little Rd. and span south from the intersection area of S.R. 54 and Little Rd. to the intersection of Little Rd. and

4

Trinity Blvd., covering about 3,200 ft. The idea for the sidewalks came about when students first noticed that their classmates had to walk in the grass on the side of the road to get to nearby shopping centers, medical offices, and neighborhoods near their schools. Then on Jan. 19, 2011, 15year-old Mitchell High student Cierra Mamonoff was crossing Little Rd. during school hours when she was struck by a car and killed. Because of that Pappas thinks that students started paying more attention to needs for safety improvements on Little Rd. So the students enlisted aid at a meeting of the Pasco County Metropolitan Planning Organization, which consists of county commissioners and representatives from the county's municipalities. Progress came bit by bit, with funding approved for the project and money requested from the federal Safe Routes to Schools program to pay for the effort. The Suncoast News reported that the project is receiving $760,248 from the Florida Department of Transportation.

Last month at a breakfast held at Seven Springs Middle School followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the new 8-foot-wide “shared use” sidewalk that runs along the west side of Little Rd. between S.R. 54 and Trinity Blvd. was celebrated. Additionally, there is an adjoining sidewalk to the west along Mitchell Blvd. to Trinity Oaks Blvd. “The homeowners associations around here were not able to get the sidewalks, but our kids did,” said Seven Springs teacher Dorothy Taylor. Pasco School District Superintendent Heather Fiorentino praised the students. So did commissioners Henry Wilson and Jack Mariano. State Senator Mike Fasano said to an audience of students and parents, ”Regardless of what age, you must get involved. And not only get involved," he emphasized, "but advocate for what they believe in. That’s what these kids did." Two of the original Lead the Pack students, Kuehner and Pappas, now 11th graders, along with 8th graders Matthew Sandoval and Luccas Borges, came back for their moment of shared triumph and accepted congratulations from the audience at the ceremony. “Four years seems like a long time, but that’s how government works some-

times,” Fiorentino told them. “This is a valuable lesson you will take on with you for the rest of your lives.”

Chamber of Commerce Hosts Awards Banquet The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce held its 68th annual awards banquet on June 8 at the Spartan Manor in New Port Richey. Bruce Mills was elected as chairman of the Chamber Board. Mills is employed as a certified public accountant at the firm of Prosser Howells, P.A. The Chamber chose Commissioner Ann Hildebrand, Realtor Victoria Barley and arts patron Judith Koutsos for top honors. Hildebrand who is not seeking re-election this fall received the Outstanding Public Service Award. Chamber leaders praised Hildebrand's public service and volunteerism during her 41 years as a Pasco resident. Barley, a community activist and past president of West Pasco Board of Realtors received the Outstanding Citizen Award. Last year Barley led a group of Realtor volunteers who built a house in Holiday in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. Barley has also been a board member of the Chamber.

Koutsos earned the Eminent Pioneer Award for 42 years of service to Pasco causes. Koutsos got praise for work with many organizations including: All Children's Hospital Foundation, PACE Center for Girls, Good Samaritan Health Clinic, and North Bay Hospital. Koutsos has been a supporter of the arts since 1971. She was part of a group that started the Richey Suncoast Theatre and was its first music director. The group saved the landmark Thomas Meehan Theater from demolition. Among groups, Chamber officials singled out Pasco Kids First for the Outstanding Area Youth Organization Award. Pasco Kids First got the youth organization honor for helping some 10,000 children and 2,500 families since 1989. Executive Director Rick Hess leads the organization with 35 staff members to keep children safe from abuse or neglect. Three area Rotary clubs shared the Outstanding Service Club honor: Holiday Rotary, Rotary Club of New Port Richey and Rotary Club of Trinity. The three Rotary clubs were cited for supplying more than 1,000 backpacks with school supplies for needy students, organizing the Chasco Fiesta boat parade and street parade, spon-

soring the Holiday Street Parade and funding numerous high school scholarships, among other accomplishments. Marty Smith represented Holiday Rotary at the banquet while Becky Bennett appeared for Trinity Rotary and Dr. Don Cable for New Port Richey Rotary. The choice for Outstanding Nonprofit Award was the Good Samaritan Health Clinic. CEO Melissa Fahy accepted the award for the Good Samaritan clinic. The clinic provides free medical care for needy residents. The staff includes more than 80 volunteer physicians, 28 dentists, 15 registered nurses and two pharmacists. Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind won the Outstanding Community Service Award. The Chamber of Commerce singled out the Lighthouse, led by Executive Director Sylvia Perez, for community service honors. For the past 25 years, the organization has aided many residents with vision problems. The organization has 13 full-time workers and 10 part-time employees. Lighthouse innovations include organizing a Beeping Easter Egg Hunt in March and opening the Opportunity Center in April to provide jobs for clients. Other individual honors went to

(L - R) Becky Bennett, Mary Roxanne Harmon and Kim Altrui. Eric Anderson as ambassador of the year, and Chris Dunning, principal of Paul R. Smith Middle School, for the Winner Award.

Dr. Watson received her degree from the College of Veterinarian Medicine at Auburn University, and her undergraduate degree at Murray State University in Kentucky. After graduating Dr. Watson was a veterinarian in St. Petersburg for 12 years before she searched for an area to open her own pet wellness center. I asked Dr. Watson why she chose the Trinity area when opening her own business and she explained, “I wanted a location that would provide the amount of traffic that Trinity Boulevard does, and also be part of a growing community. Within the first week of opening, new clients were coming in with their pets. The residents in the area really support local businesses, and right away we became a local vet. Dr. Watson and Alicia Rietsma, D.V.M., who joined the center a year ago, use some of the latest technology in the field. Dr. Watson says that 90 percent of all their labs are done inhouse. SAT AND ACT UPDATE

Tests That Can Determine Your Student’s Educational Future By Dr. Wayne Adams “Hi Sue. You look a little concerned,” said Linda. “What’s on your mind this morning?” Responding with a worried tone in her voice, Sue answered, “My son is a senior this year in high school and my daughter is a junior. Now I am hearing about SAT’s, ACT’s, and PSAT’s. What are these tests? Why are these tests important? What do they do? Can I help them get ready in some way? I need to find out. I am really confused!” Looking thoughtful for a minute, Linda added, “Now that you mention it, I have wondered the same thing about Mike and Susan. Mike will be a sophomore, and Susan a freshman, in high school. My worry is more about the FCAT. Just yesterday, I heard about a new ‘End of Course” exam for every high school course. If a student does not pass the EOC, no matter what a student’s grade in the course, that student fails and has to repeat the

14

class. That’s a little scary. Have you heard anything about this?”

LET’S FIND SOME ANSWERS Every fall, conversations like this happen across the country as parents think about college admissions, scholarships, and helping their students do their best in high school. Let’s find some answers about the SAT, ACT, PSAT, FCAT, and EOC. Our conclusion will talk more about what you as a parent can do so your student can do their best on these examinations. THE SAT The SAT is a nationally standardized test given seven times a year by the College Board. Three tests are given in the fall, and four in the spring. The three major test sections are Writing, Critical Reading, and Mathematics. Within each section are three individual tests, and there is one unidentified experimental test, for a total of ten test sections requiring about four hours of testing time.

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

Scores range between 200 and 800 for each section, with a maximum score for all three sections of 2400. These tests are only given at authorized testing centers such as designated high schools, require a reservation on-line at collegeboard. com, and require a normal fee of $50.00 to take the full test. Results are published in a password protected account on the internet, and are also mailed to the student, three to four weeks after the test. The stated purpose of the SAT is to assess a student’s ability to do succeed in college. In other words, it is a “predictive” test. The Col-lege Board says there is a definite correlation between scoring levels on the SAT and later academic success in college. Most colleges believe this statement, so they consider SAT scores seriously as part of deter-mining whether to admit a student compared to other applications. Normally, the major factors in an admission decision are class standing, GPA, results on standardized

test(s), quality of essay and writing skills, and distinctive com-munity or other activities. A student can take the SAT examination as many times as desired. One important feature is that a student can “pick and choose’ the best score in each section, and later submit only these scores to colleges. The college will not know these scores came from different examinations. Also, there is no time limit currently on when scores can be counted – meaning a high score for a ninth grader can be used when that student is a senior. The next three SAT examinations are sched-uled for Oct 6th, Nov 3rd, and Dec 1st. Most colleges require completed applications and receipt of all standardized tests by January 1st, with the University of Florida normally require-ing the full package a month earlier.

THE ACT The ACT is a nationally standardized test given six times a year by American College Testing. Three tests

internet, and are also mailed to the student, 3 - 4 weeks after the test. The stated purpose of the ACT is to assess a student’s current level of educational achievement and their ability to succeed in college. are given in the fall, and three in the spring. The next exams are on Sept 8th, Oct 27th, and Dec 8th. The four required sections are English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Essay is an optional fifth section, which all students should also take at the same time because, if a college requires it, the student must retake a whole examination to do so. Scores range between 1 - 36 for each sect-ion. The “composite” is the average score of the four required sections, and ranges from 1 – 36. These tests are only given at authorized testing centers such as designated high schools, require a reservation on-line at act.org, and require a normal fee of $48.00 to take the full test. Results are published in a password pro-tected account on the

SAT AND ACT ARE VERY DIFFERENT On the surface, it may seem that the SAT and ACT are very similar. In fact, they have major differences. For example: the SAT has different require-ments for the essay; is more dependent on vocabulary; is not as dependent on reading passages and evaluations; and math is easier because many formulas are given to the student at the beginning of the math sections, problems are not as advanced, trigonometry is not included, and does not have testing in science. The ACT is the opposite. Students with stronger mathematical skills and logical thinking tend to do better on the ACT. Students with stronger verbal skills and intuitive thinking tend to do better on the SAT.

THE PSAT The PSAT is far more than just preparation for the SAT. It is the only national test used to determine if a student is to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholar-ship Program that can include major National Merit Scholarships. Colleges give major addit-ional scholarships to National Merit Scholars. THE FCAT The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is given to all tenth graders in public high schools in the spring. If a high school student does not pass the FCAT or an acceptable substitute before the end of their senior year, that student will not graduate. Scoring an 18 on and the Reading or the Math sections of the ACT, or a 280 in Reading and a 370 in Math on the SAT, fulfill this requirement as well. The FCAT is being phased out by the EOC in Florida public high schools. THE EOC (End-of-Course Assessments) EOC testing has already started in public high schools in mathematics. Shortly, this testing will be required for reading, writing, science, and history. Examinations are taken during

one week at the completion of a full course. Stud-ents have all the time needed (normally 80 minutes or less) to complete the test in one sitting, everything is computerized, and the student must pass the test to receive credit for the course. EOC’s are not required for students with certifications for longer times on tests. To talk with Dr. Adams about your student doing their best on the SAT and ACT, contact him at 727-253-0639 or wwa0811@ gmail.com. He has degrees and advanced studies from Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia Int’l, and Luther Rice; and is one of the top Tutors in Tampa Bay. His students have been admitted to many colleges and universities such as Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, NYU, U of Chicago, UCLA, USC, UF, FSU, USF, and UCF. You may also want to talk with Dr. Adams about his FREE, PREDICTIVE SAT AND ACT TESTS that can help you know where your student might score on a full examination. A few days after the test, you will receive an E-mailed report with individual and composite scores, scores in Vocabulary and Grammar. This timed test can be taken at home or at class.

The Cleaning Angel Family Hit Hard by Tropical Storm Debby By Kim Thomas Long-time advertiser and friend of Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, Donna Ferrante, came to us with a harrowing story of what one of her employees at The Cleaning Angel and her family went through during Tropical Storm Debby. Like so many in the area, Christine Bishop and her children are temporarily homeless in the aftermath of the storm that was surprisingly destructive. Christine is one of Donna’s Cleaning Angels and works in homes in the area polishing and scrubbing to meet her employer’s high standards in the cleaning industry. During Tropical Storm Debby, Christine left her children with a sitter while she ran out for a fiveminute trip to get toilet paper at the corner store. In that short time period, her house was hit by a tornado and flooded almost immediately. Firemen had blocked the road into the neighborhood and Christine frantically told them her children were inside her house. By the time

she got to her children, who had been putting together a jigsaw puzzle before their babysitter corralled them into the hallway, their home was destroyed. The children, 10-year-old Dominic and his sisters, 8-year-old Sky-Lyn and Aliyah, 6, saw a tornado dip down at their sliding glass door just before part of the roof was ripped away. The family was rescued by the fire department via bulldozer and boat. Unfortunately everything they owned was destroyed in the wind and flood. Donna says that Christine is a dedicated mother who is very conscientious about her job, even coming to work the next day. “She wouldn’t let the Angels down,” says Donna, who asked if we could help in getting the children items that they need. Donna and her partner Steve Insolia are accepting clothing and other items at Donna’s businesses, The Cleaning Angel in Holiday and Madam Butterfly Fashion Outlet in Tarpon Springs. Christine says, “I just went into panic mode. The water rose up to my

chest! The kids get very clingy when it rains and I can’t sleep.” Her kids are brave and resilient though, giving their account of the storm. Sky-Lyn remembers, “The wind and the water came at me and it was so fast! It was splashing so hard and the roof was gone. Mommy’s room is torn apart and there was glass in the kitchen that fell out of the window. We had to throw all of our stuff away – all of my Justin Bieber stuff is ruined.” Her Christine with her children: Dominic, Sky-Lyn and Aliyah little sister Aliyah added, “The whole 5T and 6T, and shoe sizes 12 and 1. house got ruined.” And big brother Donations of clothes and Dominic says, “I saw the water all the other items for the children are way up to the mailbox.” being accepted from 10 a.m. – 6 FEMA has put the family up in a p.m. at The Cleaning Angel, 5517 hotel. Christine says, “It’s about my Chaparral Lane in Holiday, (727) kids right now. Need a New Roof or Roof Repair? Get it DONE RITE By Katie Thomas Hurricane season is upon us and after Tropical Storm Debby we all realize that a solid foundation and the roof over our head is impertinent to our safety and wellbeing. When the time comes for your home to be reroofed or it is in need of a roof repair, you need to hire a reputable, licensed roofing contractor who provides fast, and reliable, affordable service, and most importantly, you need a roofing company that will do the job right! Done Rite Roofing, Inc., located in Ozona, is a family owned and operated roofing company that has been serving Pinellas, Pasco and Hillsborough Counties for over 15 years. Jason and Christina Loiacano are the owners of Done Rite Roofing and they have worked diligently to build a reputation that is as solid and strong as the roofs they build and guarantee. They never use subcontractors and with Done Rite, you are always working with an owner. Jason and Christina make sure to fulfill their goals in being a part of your community and are active within the local schools, SPCA,

sports leagues and other community organizations. Recently Done Rite Roofing paired up with Habitat for Humanity for Pasco and completed their first job, donating their labor and expertise to a family in need. Done Rite Roofing has done roofing work for municipality buildings in the Cities of Dunedin and Oldsmar and is a chosen installer for Home Depot’s roofs. “Over the years, we’ve done all the Humane Society of Pinellas’ (HSP) and the SPCA’s roofing work and have donated materials, giving them a greatly discounted price,” says Jason. Jason and Christina are originally from Buffalo, NY, and these two high school sweethearts have spent the past 21 years working to build a life together and a business. Jason worked for a family owned roofing company in Buffalo as a minimum wage laborer, where he worked his way up to foreman. As a teenager, he came to Florida on a fishing vacation with his dad and knew it was where he wanted to be. Christina shares their journey, “Jason had to wait for me to finish college before we could move to Florida and start our journey as business owners.” Jason

and Christina have two sons, ages 20 and 7, and they expect from their boys the same work ethic that they have themselves. “Nothing is handed down to our children; my son had to purchase his own first vehicle, he must work for what he has. We were both teenage parents, completed high school

Dance Extreme Academy

Remarkable Teaching & Outstanding Dancers By Dara Tucker After watching “Dancing with the Stars” or “So You Think You Can Dance” I often question how do they do that – how can they dance such complicated, modern moves, with precision and grace? Once I visited Dance Extreme Academy, located in Trinity just off Mitchell Blvd. near Prestige Dentistry, I had a much better understanding. Dance Extreme Academy is

26

not anything like dance studios of the past. They teach techniques and skills that kids are excited about and motivated to learn, because it’s like what they’re seeing when they turn on the TV. Darlene Jones opened Dance Extreme Academy two years ago. She was inspired to give her daughter and other dancers a premier studio where they could focus on learning the modern type of dances they wanted to learn.

Darlene assembled an amazing staff to keep the studio moving forward in the world of dance. Marketing Director Stacey Wyman and Erica Kuzniczci are the friendly faces you meet at the door each time you drop off or pick up your dancer. Darlene and her staff continually work to create a studio where kids, from beginners to competition level dancers, feel comfortable and have fun, while parents know their children are being taught by experienced and knowledgeable teachers in a safe environment. Meet Dance Extreme Academy’s Instructors Artistic Director Julie Walek has taught dance and acro (acrobatics that include floor gymnastics, tumbling, and contortion) for over 17 years winning both local and national competitions for her choreography. Using her experience and knowledge – she earned her degree at the University of Buffalo where she studied Dance Curriculum this dynamic teacher puts her heart and soul into creating a diverse dance curriculum for the studio. Teacher Jillian Michaels has been teaching dance for over eleven years and is on the dance faculty at University of Tampa. She is an ABT® Certified Teacher, who has successfully

Always moving forward, Dance Extreme Academy will offer even more dance class variety, with five talented new teachers starting in the fall. Michael Jones is a dance performance major at USF and will be teaching new styles of dance including break dancing, pop and lock and krumping. Amy DiBongrazio, a dance major at USF, will be teaching jazz, lyrical and contempo-

rary. Griff Whitehurst, a graduate of University of Tampa who currently dances with local Tampa Bay companies, will be teaching tap and advanced musical theatre. Rosie Easterling, a competitive dancer and student teacher since nine years old, will be teaching three- to six-year-old classes. Mallory Rieger, a former intern at Dance Extreme Academy, will be teaching musical theatre and beginning acrobatics this fall. Designed for Dancers Girls and boys alike love the amenities at Dance Extreme Academy. There are stylish, current clothing items and dance accessories such as dance bags, leotards and tights available in the boutique area. A large area called “The Café” provides a zone where kids can

do their homework and eat a snack, or parents can watch their dancer in the studio through a large flat-screen TV that takes live action video of the classes. There are two different studios; both feature walls lined with mirrors and ballet bars, as well as low-impact dance floors and beautiful natural lighting. Julie explains, “It is important to us to have the correct floors that will protect our dancers. When young children are jumping the floors help to absorb some of that impact, so their knees and bodies will continue to be healthy as they mature as a dancer.” The studio has a lively, upbeat feel that makes you feel like you are in the company of friends. Friendship and camaraderie among the dancers is so important to the staff they even made it

part of their mission statement: “We will also work to provide each dancer with an education that instills poise, grace, self confidence and more importantly, memories and friendships to last a lifetime.” From beginners to competition level, Dance Extreme Academy has a place for every dancer, even adults! All students can perform in their yearly dance recital, and there are performance dancers who perform at various community events. This is ideal for students who enjoy performing beyond the yearly recital, but are not able to make the full commitment to competitive dance. The studios’ highly successful competitive group is formed based on student auditions, and has placed in the top ten in every competition they have gone to, many times in multiple numbers. Recently, Dance Extreme Academy won a Technical Excellence award at the 2012 Creation Dance Championship; it was one of only three studio awards presented. Students also have won scholarships for outstanding dancing to compete nationally in New York. Another fabulous learning opportunity at Dance Extreme Academy is in the master classes. Any student from the community can sign up to take a class with an instructor from a local touring theatre company. Several times

throughout the year, the academy brings in professional dancers – such as Kentrell Newton of MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew” – providing a remarkable opportunity for dancers. This year the master classes are featuring dancers from Jekyll and Hyde, Wicked, and Flash Dance. Sharon Rodd’s two daughters take numerous classes at Dance Extreme Academy, and she has been very impressed with the instruction they both receive. “The teaching quality and choreography is fabulous. It’s a very family friendly environment. It’s the furthest thing from a competitive dance show environment where kids are mean to each other. Of course everyone likes winning, but what’s most important is their experience – the teamwork and friendships they’ve developed. My girls can’t wait to go there every day.” Fall classes start August 6 (and follow the Pasco County School calendar). Join Dance Extreme Academy on Saturday, August 4, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. for their Open House Registration Celebration. They will have face painting, games, balloon creations and raffles. In addition, you can look at the studio and meet the instructors, including five new instructors that are joining in the fall, and register for classes. Ballet, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, jazz, tap, combo, pointe, musical theatre, modern, stretch and tone, and leaps and turns are all different classes available at Dance Extreme Academy. From beginners to competition level, kids to adults, girls and boys (boys dance at 50 percent off!) – Dance Extreme Academy can meet your dancer’s needs. If you would like more information about Dance Extreme Academy or their Open House Registration Celebration on Saturday, August 4 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. call 727-375-JAZZ, visit www.DanceExtremeAcademy.com or stop by 1645 Davenport Dr. in Trinity.

Winning Teen Acknowledged By Top Notch Performance At GTJGA Golf Tournament Of Champions

1st place winner Christian Anderson with two runners up: Brian Allen & Connor Lynch

At the 34th Annual Greater Tampa Jr. Golf Association’s (GTJGA) Tournament of Champions (TOC) teens and pre-teens were all smiles as they began their two-day competition at the Falcon Watch Golf Club in Sun City Center. It was the “elite of the elite,” a competition of winners that had placed first, second, or third during the 2011/2012 season. Students

Girls and boys ages 12 through 18 competed in three age divisions as they played 18-holes, and those ages 6 through 11 played in the 9-hole championship. The tournament began at the later part of May on a Saturday with a

Besides parents and family members, the huge gallery of spectators included senior residents from the local community. first place finisher Bianca in the girls’ age 11 to 13 division who revealed her philosophy for the TOC: “playing one hole at a time.” The historic event and GJTGA tour provides a positive learning environment for girl and boy golfers of all levels, ages six to eighteen. Numerous PGA or LPGA professionals of today began their start in the golf world with this non-profit association. “This is without a doubt, one of my favorite events for the players and it provides them with a challenge to play against fellow top juniors in their age bracket, many of which are friends,” stated GTJGA Board member Tim Glennie. The nearly sixty kids that played enjoyed the challenge, annual banquet, awards and raffle that immediately followed the TOC competition. According to 2nd place finisher eleven year-old Alexis Dross, who competed in a 9-hole division, she liked 3 things best: (1) the trophies, (2) shape of the course, and (3) the friends she has made while playing golf. While all who participated in the TOC are “winners” for trying their best, the list below shows the young golfers who shot low rounds as 1st place TOC finishers:

Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre Combines Expertise with Treatment By Julie Kanehl

available today for patients who want to look and feel better about their skin.

Considering the fact that your skin is your largest organ, and that it faces a variety of harsh conditions throughout your lifetime, it is important to know where to turn for outstanding dermatology care. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre, located in the Trinity Professional Place plaza at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. is dedicated to treating skin conditions of all kinds including skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, rashes, wrinkles and more. Patients who come to Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre see Brian T. Johnson, M.D., a Board Certified Dermatologist who has been treating local patients since he opened his first practice nearby in 1990. Since that time he has built an impressive reputation for truly listening to his patients, providing exceptional care, and getting incredible results. Dr. Johnson has been seeing patients for more than 22 years at his original office, located on Grand Blvd. in the Richey Medical Center. Four years ago, in addition to his New Port Richey office, he opened Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre in Trinity to be more centrally located to the many surrounding communities, including East Lake, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Tampa. On staff at the new Medical Center of Trinity as well as North Bay Hospital, Dr. Johnson is a trusted dermatologist in the community. Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree and his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Iowa, and completed four years of residency before moving to Florida. Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr.

Treating Acne to Wrinkles and Everything in Between According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and just like other forms of cancer, it can be life threatening. That is why it is so important to see a qualified dermatologist, like Dr. Johnson, about anything on your body that doesn’t look right. It’s critically important that people pay attention to changes in their skin, changes in moles, or the appearance of anything that won’t heal. These could be signs of cancer, and these skin changes don’t always appear in places that receive sunlight! Skin cancer can appear anywhere on your body. “Our goal is to treat cancer as simply, easily and cheaply as possible,” says Dr. Johnson. “Prevention is our number one focus, followed by early diagnosis and treatment.” In addition to traditional skin cancer treatments, Dr. Johnson has a new state-of-the-art piece of equipment called the BLU-U. The BLU-U is a quick and affordable way to treat precancerous Actinic Keratoses or AKs as they are more commonly known. AKs are rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by too much exposure to the sun. Dr. Johnson also uses the BLU-U to successfully treat other skin conditions like acne as well. According to Dr. Johnson, 90 percent of teenagers get acne, and there’s truly no reason to suffer with the many topical and oral medical options that are out there. Treatments now are so good that they can often see a patient just once as opposed to asking them to come back again and again. “We give a

Brian T. Johnson, M.D. Johnson knew he wanted to be a doctor, but he never intended to be a dermatologist. “As a doctor [in residency] you rotate through all of the specialties,” said Dr. Johnson, “I was impressed with the preciseness and expertise that was required of dermatologists. That’s when I knew that was what I wanted to do, and I find it very rewarding.” Together with his two Certified Physician Assistants, Marijana Cejkova and Tonya Terwilliger, Dr. Johnson treats everything from skin cancer to acne and wrinkles. Dr. Johnson says, “We take the time to get to know our patients, and we listen to what their concerns are.” In addition to medical treatments and medications, Jessica Banes-Pyles, a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who is affiliated with Dr. Johnson offers a wide variety of skin care treatments, facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels that will improve the appearance of your skin. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre combines Dr. Johnson’s medical expertise with the many fantastic aesthetic treatment options that are

treatment and we expect that to work.” He adds, “Left untreated, acne is destined to get worse.” People of all ages get acne, and Dr. Johnson can help. Thankfully, with today’s treatment options, getting rid of acne can be simple and painless. People who live with conditions like eczema or psoriasis don’t have to suffer. Dr. Johnson says, “Psoriasis is the second most common skin ailment behind acne.” For example, Dr. Johnson says that there are two new treatments for people who have a thick psoriasis plaque. The most affordable and most common treatment is to give Intralesional Injections, and if more treatment is necessary there are other options like Immune Modulative medications. While wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, growing old gracefully doesn’t mean that you have to grow old with wrinkles! If you have wrinkles that you are concerned about, Botox and injectible fillers are a great alternative to plastic surgery and they often have dramatic effects. Dr. Johnson says, “These treatments are a lot less aggressive and side effect prone.” These simple, quick and effective procedures are done right on the premises. Trinity Dermatology uses the Cynosure Elite, the most comprehensive laser hair removal system available today. Since it’s designed for all skin types, it is used to treat the broadest range of clients. The Cynosure Elite laser system is optimized for effective treatment of facial and leg veins, as well as benign epidermal pigmented lesions (sun spots) with easy, safe, effective and fast results. Most skin types will improve with a noticeable difference in 34 weeks. “We are here to help with any-

thing that has to do with your skin, hair or nails,” says Dr. Johnson. Trinity Aesthetic Centre Services Jessica Banes-Pyles is a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who performs a variety of aesthetic services aimed at improving the look and feel of your skin. Treatments are available for both men and women that change the appearance of your skin even after one treatment, and you don’t even have to be a patient of Dr. Johnson’s. “We do facials and deep pore cleansing treatments, as well as a variety of microdermabrasion and chemical peels.” Jessica, who went to the Florida College of Natural Health, has been working at Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre since 2009. She performs popular treatments such as facials for her clients, which leaves their skin silky smooth and glowing. Jessica offers a variety of facials, including a customized facial that is specifically created around her customers’ preferences and skincare needs. For acne-prone skin, a Deep Pore Cleansing Facial is a fantastic way to clear your face of impurities. This kind of facial includes cleansing, exfoliating, extractions and a corrective mask which will leave the skin looking and feeling amazing. The Trinity Facial is a popular

Jessica Banes-Pyles, Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician facial at Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre because it combines a deep cleansing facial with a head, neck and shoulder massage. Chemical peels are used to really change the appearance of your skin. Results include brightening, tightening and a lightening of the skin, and it can only be done by a professional like Jessica, who says, “I analyze and recommend a skin care regimen for each of my clients.” According to Jessica, microdermabrasion helps with large pores and reduces fine lines and wrinkles while brightening the skin. Microdermabrasion involves resurfacing the skin by gently passing microscopic abrasive crystals along the surface of the face. Jessica says, “This treatment is great to have prior to an event because you don’t have to go through the peeling

process associated with chemical peels; it’s a great alternative.” Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre offers two very distinct skin care lines, trusted by dermatologists all around the world. Obagi Medical is the #1 physician-dispensed, prescription strength skincare line in the world. The Obagi Medical line can transform your skin by evening out skin tone by reducing age spots and pigmentation in the skin, and reducing fine lines and wrinkles as well. Jessica and Dr. Johnson trust the Obagi system and are very confident that at the end of the 12-18 week Obagi Medical program, your skin will look and feel younger and healthier. “All ages, all skin types, there’s an Obagi for everyone.” – Obagi Medical Trinity Aesthetic Centre also provides the #1 wholly organic line of skin care called Eminence, handmade skin care from Hungary that is clinically studied and made completely of certified organic fruits, vegetables, fruits, seeds and leaves. Jessica says, “Eminence is what I use right now. There are no parabens or harsh chemicals in their products and cleansers, toners and eye creams.” She adds, “You’re not going to find anything as pure as Eminence, you could eat it!”

Suncoast Urgent Care in Trinity Celebrates its 5th Anniversary By Kim Thomas Suncoast Urgent Care, located at Trinity Village Center, is proud to be celebrating its 5th Anniversary this month. Peter C. Duic, MD, and John P. Opyoke, MD, drew upon their extensive experience as emergency room doctors when they opened the urgent care facility, originally named Trinity Urgent Care, on July 16, 2007. Drs. Opyoke and Duic decided to change the name of their practice in order to have more uniformity when they opened a second location in July 2009 on Mariner Boulevard in Spring Hill. Both facilities are open seven

days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday. Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic are both residency-trained in emergency medicine and both doctors are Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine; important because they are both specifically trained to handle all kinds of emergencies. “We opened as ER doctors, seeing how much could be cared for here,” says Dr. Duic. “We’ve become an integral part of the community and have a wonderful group of people. It’s really a pleasure to be able to care for patients here.”

At far less cost to the patient than a visit to the hospital ER, the doctors at Suncoast Urgent Care treat everything from common colds to broken bones. The doctors designed the facility with the technology to care for urgent needs, and additionally, they made it comfortable and pleasant for patients and families – a place where they would want their own children treated. Suncoast Urgent Care is not meant for life-threatening emergencies. Rather, it provides quality medical care in a state-of-the-art facility for patients who are sick or injured

but who do not require emergency room measures. Onsite digital x-ray, EKG, lab testing, IV fluids and medications from the onsite pharmacy make it even more convenient for patients and cutting down on travel, time, and cost. You can get immediate results for strep, mononucleosis, urinalysis and more. A major procedure room is set up to handle splinting, suturing and casting. to about the quality of care at Suncoast Urgent Care comes from its patients. Even though my family has a great family physician, we have turned to the convenience and quality medical care at Suncoast Urgent Care several times over the past five years – the most recent being a quick, inexpensive, yet thorough school sports physical. Hear what patients have written on comment cards: • “Excellent, caring and friendly service.” • “We have come to know and trust your facility and staff. Everyone is always so wonderful.” • “Always a pleasure to come here and they treat you like family.” • “1st place I go with any problem.” • “Love the coffee machine and staff!”

• “Awesome job! I would come here again.” • “I am so happy you are in the neighborhood.” • “I always feel comfortable bringing my children here, thank you.” Suncoast Urgent Care provides patients with an immaculate and beautifully designed medical center equipped to treat nearly any emergency, but also designed to provide the Trinity community with convenient and competent healthcare and wellness care. The funding started on July 1. Dillinger says he already has a twopage list of volunteers–mostly retired nurses–who have offered to assist the mobile unit. He's looking for pediatricians and pharmacists to get involved. Medical Center of Trinity has donated $10,000 worth of flu shots. Shanna Shea who coordinates the Mobile Medical Care Unit for the Pinellas-Pasco Public Defender's office says, "This is a great opportunity for poor people in Pasco County. Initially, we go (to where we plan to be) a week beforehand and put up posters and handouts to alert the homeless. People are signed up in advance so the nurse practitioners have some idea of what (to expect) when we get there. Until we get full-time staff we'll be using the Health Department's nurse practitioners. These nurses can write prescriptions, and they know which ones are free at Publix. We'll be going to homeless shelters or churches, places that al-

ready have an existing population who use their food banks and showers. We've been hitting areas in both east and west sides of Pasco to see what the need is." Health Department nurse Pam Sherwood tells us, "Most of the clients we see haven't had any medical care for many years. They have multiple medical problems, and you have to pick and choose which one to treat. You can't solve all their problems, and you have to understand that they don't have any money." David Bledsoe, spokesman for Metropolitan Ministries, said the mobile medical unit offers services that are "vastly underprovided" in Pasco County, saying, "There's limited access to free clinics. You have to have transportation, and sometimes you have to have an address. Homeless people who live in camps don't have that." Some of the locations the Mobile Medical Care Unit is expected to visit are: Impact Family Ministries in Port Richey, Metropolitan Ministries in Holiday, the Rope Center in Hudson, and Gulf Coast Women's Center, Hudson. The Homeless Coalition (727842-8605; email: homelesscoalition@verizon.net) will be listing the mobile medical unit schedules; they can also be found in local

newspapers. The van will be operating three days a week for about 25 hours. "Wherever the showers are is where we'd like to be because, for the most part, the homeless come to where the showers and food banks are," says Shea. For further information contact Shanna Shea at 727-847-8155.

Message from Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco The recent flooding and storm damage caused in Pasco County by Tropical Storm Debby underscores the need for citizens to have a disaster plan. Although this storm was not originally projected to be a threat to the area, its slow-moving progress and heavy rains severely flooded several counties in West Central Florida. I’m proud of the Pasco deputies who worked long hours during and after the storm to assist citizens who suffered flooding and storm damage to their homes and property. Hurricane season lasts until November 30 and if you haven’t already done so, the time to prepare for disaster is before it strikes. According to Florida’s 2012 Severe Weather Awareness Guide, families should have an emergency kit that contains food for at least three days, water,

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

required medicines, a first aid kit, and additional survival items should you have to live without electrical power or should you have to leave your home. The guide also urges you to have an emergency plan, which details where your family should meet in case a disaster separates you from your loved ones, the names of friends and family you could live with if forced out of your home, and instructions for turning off electrical, gas, water, and heater systems at the breaker switches. An important tool that can save your life and the life of your loved ones is a NOAA Weather Radio. According to FloridaDisaster.org, nearly 75 percent of tornado fatalities in Florida since 1950 have occurred between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., when people are least likely to be tuned into other sources of weather information. A NOAA Weather Radio is the lone government-operated radio system that provides National Weather Service severe weather warnings 24 hours a day. If you live in the path of the severe storm, and your family has a NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio, the radio will automatically sound an alarm and then broadcast the warning message, regardless of the time of day. The newer weather radios even allow you to program the alarm to sound for specific counties and hazards.

If you are hard of hearing or a heavy sleeper, there is even a kit available for the radio that includes a pillow shaker and strobe light which can wake you in the middle of the night. Part of law enforcement and emergency services mission during extreme weather and disasters is to convince citizens on the importance of evacuations. No one wants to leave the comfort of their home and many people may want to try and stay put to protect their home and belongings. However, emergency management personnel do not issue evacuation orders unless their experience and training lead them to be-

lieve that citizen’s lives are in danger. If you receive an order to evacuate, DO SO! Remember the tragic case of citizens who tried to ride out the storm when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005.They later tried to call for emergency assistance but law enforcement and emergency personnel were unable to respond, and many people lost their lives. You can download Florida’s 2012 Severe Weather Awareness Guide and set up a family disaster plan at FloridaDisaster.org. Do it today, as severe weather and other disasters can strike at any time.

“Fairway Pizza” Continued from page 1 Whether you eat at Fairway Pizza Too or have it delivered, you will be impressed with their customer service. The restaurant’s décor is in a golf theme, with memorabilia from local golf courses and well known players (Jason’s mom is a former pro golfer). The inside is so well maintained and clean you would think it’s one of the area’s newer restaurants. The staff makes customers feel like everyone is a regular, and after nearly 20 years it’s not a business philosophy, but a way of life when you enter the restaurant. Fairway Pizza Too also has an enormous delivery range. Jason says, “We deliver to an area of Odessa that no one else delivers to. Even if a customer is out of our large delivery area, we’ll meet them halfway. It’s the tiny things that we do to personalize our service that people remember. We go out of our way and love to alter things to people’s liking.” Fairway Pizza Too has such a wide selection of items that even when you are ordering for a large family there are plenty of options to satisfy everyone’s appetite – and I have to admit over the years I have sampled

just about the whole menu! From their Starters or appetizers, I highly recommend their garlic bread with cheese and marinara dipping sauce as well as the pita bites, which are warm slices of pita bread served with a side of tzatziki sauce. Fairway’s pizza is a northern-style pan pizza with a medium crust, that’s golden in color. If you’re looking for something other than a traditional pizza, the white and Alfredo pizza are great options, as well as several specialty pizzas such as their seafood or barbeque chicken pizzas. While their pizza is delicious, Fair- Greek salad is one of Fairway Pizza Too's most requested items. It's popular as way is probably best known for their both a meal and for catering. sar salad with marinated sliced chicken breast, pineapple and large crisp croutons. The teriyaki chicken Caesar is light and refreshing, yet very satisfying – I find it especially enjoyable in the summer. If you’re looking for an Italian dinner you can find spaghetti, stuffed shells, chicken parmesan and more, all with marinara sauce, melted cheese, garlic bread and tossed salad. If you’re not in the mood for a full dinner, there are over 20 hot oven grinders, wraps and traditional or chicken gyros to make choosing your meal an even harder decision. The children’s menu

includes classics such as spaghetti and a chicken tender basket. A favorite in our house is the pita pizza, which is not only a great price, but also allows each child to have their own mini pizza with the toppings they’ve decided upon. High quality food at a great price can be hard to come by, but Fairway Pizza Too does not compromise on their luncheon specials, which all include a fountain drink; and many like the small grinder special, also include a tossed salad. They also have a daily two-for-one happy hour on draft beer and house wines,

and if you order a large pizza when you dine in on Mondays you get a free pitcher of beer or soda with your pizza. What a great way to start off the week! Consistently good food is why Paul Meyers, who works nearby, has been a Fairway Pizza Too customer for years. Paul says, “It’s not a gamble of what you’re going to get. Everything is good every time. I like to alter things on the menu, and they make it for me just as I asked. Lately I’ve been having the eggplant with black olives and feta without bread. They make it to order.”

If it’s been awhile since you’ve been to Trinity’s local legendary restaurant, Fairway Pizza Too, or if you’re new to the area, stop in for some great food and say hi to Jason. Fairway Pizza Too, located at 2337 Seven Springs Blvd. in New Port Richey, is open Mon., 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., Tues. – Sat. from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m., and noon – 10 p.m. on Sun. “American Dentistry” Continued from page 1 of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Mostafa is a member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, West Coast Dental Association, West Pasco Dental Association and Hillsborough County Dental Research Clinic. Recently opening a second location in New Port Richey, Dr. Mostafa’s reputation has earned him a great deal of respect in the area. Patients particularly like the care that they receive by Dr. Mostafa and his friendly staff, who have all been with him for many years. Dr. Mostafa also does a good deal of volunteer work in the area, and even helped to found the Red Crescent Clinic in Tampa which provides free dental work for people who can’t afford it. He also volunteers at Good Samaritan Health Clinic of Pasco and the Gulf Coast Dental Outreach. One of Dr. Mostafa’s patients said, “My experience at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has always been positive. Dr. Mostafa and his staff have always treated

me with respect and professionalism. I would highly recommend this office to anyone who is looking for a highly skilled dentist and staff.”

Expert Technique & Modern Technology Dr. Mostafa’s office is equipped with all of the latest technology designed to make going to the dentist a stress-free experience. For those of us who remember the big, loud dental x-ray machines, you’ll be happy to know that those have been replaced with state-of-the-art digital x-rays. These are quick, painless and safer – giving off 80% less radiation than standard x-rays. Another way that technology is used at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is the intraoral camera. This is a great way for him to see the entire mouth on and look for any potential problems. When he uses the camera he is able to really see parts of the mouth on a monitor that he might not have been able to see at all just a few years ago. If you think you may need oral surgery, you will be

American Family Dentistry is located at Mitchell Ranch Plaza in Trinity very pleased to find out that laser surgery is now available. Procedures like fillings, gum surgery and more no longer have to be done using loud drills. Lasers have changed everything about having oral procedures done. No more bleeding, no more stitches, no more needles! Laser dentistry allows patients to even eat, drink and talk right after having a procedure done. Lasers are extremely helpful in cosmetic proce-

dures as well. Endodontics, or root canal surgery removes the nerve in the tooth. Rotary Endodontics is a new way of performing the root canal using an electric tool that is worn on the dentist’s hand. This new technology makes having a root canal a lot faster and easier, which means patients can get back to feeling better right away. These modern tools allow Dr.

Mostafa to take better care of your entire mouth, and to help his patients stop problems before they arise.

teeth, dental implants make an incredible improvement in their way of life.

Cosmetic Dentistry If changing people’s lives is Dr. Mostafa’s passion, you can guess how excited he gets when he has the opportunity to help people feel better about their smile. Many people are ashamed of their teeth, and even try to hide them by not smiling or by covering their mouths when they laugh. In today’s age, that isn’t necessary. Dr. Mostafa and his staff can create the smile of your dreams right there in the office. Cosmetic dentistry can be as simple as teeth whitening, or as life-changing as dental implants. They bond teeth, add tooth-colored crowns, create dental veneers and more. If you or someone you love is struggling with painful dentures, or is missing teeth that make it hard to eat, there are affordable solutions right here at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. In fact, dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth, and they look, feel and operate the same way. For people with painful dentures or missing

Patient Education is Key at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry When it comes to patient education, Dr. Mostafa and his staff are committed to making sure that there aren’t any surprises when it comes to a treatment plan. Dr. Mostafa says, “We have a CD that we play for the patient about each treatment plan and what it is, and we make sure to repeat that information three to four times. We use pictures, use models. We make sure that our patients are comfortable before we begin any kind of treatment.” For patients who are perhaps a little intimidated by coming in to the dentist, Dr. Mostafa and his staff can make you comfortable by providing nitrous oxide or oral sedation with or without nitrous oxide. People don’t have to be afraid of the dentist when they visit American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.
