When you suffer from back or neck pain, it can honestly feel like the world is crumbling around you. Everything suddenly becomes difficult. Where others can breeze through their day, taking for granted each step that they take, walking, shopping and even driving can be more than you can bear. More people suffer from back pain than almost any other chronic pain out there, but when it’s serious, and you need medical attention, why go to someone less experienced when you could go to a nationally recognized neurosurgeon like Dr. George Giannakopoulos, M.D.? Dr. Giannakopoulos has been practicing in the area for nearly 20

Conquering ALS, One Mountain at a Time! Football player Steve Gleason, who played for The New Orleans Saints from 2000-2008, will always be remembered for his blocked punt on the night the New Orleans Superdome reopened for the first time after Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a terminal neuro-muscular disease. After his diagnosis, Steve and his friends and family started Team Gleason, in hopes of generating public awareness and raise funding for the research of this terrible disease. Recently, Team Gleason took on another endeavor – completing an epic adventure to Peru. Steve, along with Kevin Swan, Michel Rivers and Scott Fujita, a crew from NFL Films and Team Gleason members, endured a 7-day trek starting in Lima; taking countless buses, 2 trains, 7 planes and hiking 10 miles through the Incan trail. Their journey began in Cusco, where they spent 2 nights getting acclimated to the high elevation and visiting the Cathedral, Qoricancha Temple, the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cusco, Qenko and Puka Pukara. They went on to visit the village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and continued their trip through the countryside town of

Urubamba to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. On Day 4, they woke up early to catch the Vistadome train headed toward Machu Picchu, taking in stunning views of the mountains and heading into the high altitude cloud forest. The 21-member group, which included Steve and Kevin in wheelchairs, and 18-month old Rivers, joined a group of porters before crossing a hanging bridge over the Urubamba River. At this time none of them had any idea what they were about to endure. The Incan trail is a combination of landscapes of high altitude mountain ranges (the Andes) and dense subtropical forest. It was extremely challenging to carry the 2 wheelchairs up and down the rocky narrow paths, but the fearless leaders, Scott, Blair and Marc, were not going to let the lack of water and sunlight stop them from getting to their final destination. After 10 hours they finally reached the Sun Gate and got their first view of Machu Picchu. Although the sun had been down for a few hours and the ruins could barely be seen through the moonlight, the group was excited to know it was the final leg and hour or their journey. Traversing downhill and along more steps in the dimly lit site, the group finally made it the Sanctuary Lodge for some much needed food, water and celebra-

The following day they were elated with a huge sense of accomplishment to finally see the magnificent landscape of the ruins and mountains. Despite his diagnosis, Steve is determined to motivate others by continuing to pursue life adventures, and has challenged the worlds of technology and science to identify their most promising developments toward new treatments and a cure. Steve is such an inspiration and proves that with strong will and determination no mountain is too high to conquer!

Florida's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program Needs You By Diane Galemmo In the state of Florida, a longterm care ombudsman is a volunteer who helps to improve the lives of people who live in long-term care settings like nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family care homes. As members of Florida’s elder population make the transition into long-term care facilities, a strong support system for each individual becomes critical. Unfortunately, many long-term care residents do not have anyone to look out for their best interests when it comes to personal health, safety, welfare and rights. That is why ombudsman volunteers are so very important. Volunteer ombudsmen seek to ensure the rights, health, safety, and welfare of these residents throughout Florida. Sixteen other locations in Florida have Ombudsman Programs. The Ombudsman Program operates under the authority of federal and

4

state law. The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is made up of more than 300 volunteers who spend thousands of hours each year in licensed long-term care facilities, working to identify, investigate and resolve the concerns of residents and their loved ones, and performing annual assessments of every facility in Florida. All it takes to volunteer is a caring spirit and a willingness to learn the “ins and outs” of being a long-term care ombudsman. It is a unique program whose success depends on the boldness and compassion of volunteers. These special individuals dedicate thousands of unpaid hours each year to ensuring that the voices of Florida’s long-term care facility residents are heard. Senator Mike Fasano (R-New Port Richey) is a supporter of the program and touts the importance of its volunteers. He states, “I am writing to share with you the efforts of the Florida Long-Term Care Ombuds-

man Program. The Program’s mission is to improve the lives of our nursing home, assisted living, and adult familycare home residents. These certified citizen volunteers routinely visit residents to listen to their requests and concerns relating to their daily lives. Ombudsmen also investigate complaint allegations when contacted by residents or loved ones. With over 4,300 facilities in Florida, the need for volunteers is great. And as more individuals retire to Florida, the need will be even greater. If you are someone who enjoys giving back to your community and being a voice for seniors, please contact the Ombudsman Program to get involved." The Pasco and North Pinellas, District 7, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council is located at 2523 Seven Springs Blvd. in New Port Richey. can Heart Association. The award recognizes Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care by ensuring that stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted guidelines. This marks the sixth year that Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has been recognized with a quality achievement award. Get With The Guidelines–Stroke helps Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives. “Recent studies show that patients treated in hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke program receive a higher quality of care

and may experience better outcomes,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. “Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point’s team is to be commended for their commitment to improving the care of their patients.” Following Get With The Guidelines-Stroke treatment guidelines, patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies including the use of medications such as tPA, antithrombotics and anticoagulation therapy, along with cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation counseling. These are all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. Hospitals must adhere to these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards. “Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point is dedicated to making our care for stroke patients among the best in the country. The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program helps us to accomplish this goal,” said hospital

CEO, Shayne George “This recognition demonstrates that we are on the right track and we’re very proud of our team.” According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year. Delizioso! Dylicieux! Vόστιµα!

“Delicious in any language!” Taso has an extensive background in European cuisine and fine dining. Originally from Long Island, NY, Taso learned the art of fine cuisine from his father, who was a Captain at The Four Seasons, often frequented by John F. Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis, and John D. Rockefeller. There, Taso’s father earned a famous following that came along when he opened and ran the prestigious L’Epicure on Long Island. Growing up and working side-by-side with his father at L’Epicure – a favorite dining spot of Billy Joel, Christie Brinkley and many other famous faces – young Taso developed a passion for fine cooking and world-class service. The extensive knowledge he gained is priceless. In 1982, Taso graduated from Wilson Technological Institute of Culinary Arts with Honors. He runs his business by the same standards his father held for L’Epicure. Every dish and menu item at Taso Italiano is made from scratch and never pre-packaged. Taso Italiano opened after a com-

Taso Italiano has a beautiful granite full liquor bar with a great selection of wine, beer and premium liquors. The décor reflects classic European style and a warm atmosphere; perfect to meet, greet, eat and drink with family/friends! Taso had a dream to incorporate and celebrate his family’s history in the hospitality business; you will find paintings of scenic European landscapes that are over 100 years old, original serving dishes, skewers, plates and throwback photographs, all from Taso’s father’s restaurant. The classic style, traditional music and perfectly lit atmosphere provide the perfect setting for a relaxing, enjoybable dining experience. “Many places are more concerned with frou-frous and flair; they have lost touch with old world flavor and the importance of good comfort food,” says Taso. “I am focusing on bringing back good traditional European cook-

Everything Fresh! Taso Italiano uses the finest ingredients. The steaks are all hand-cut in house and upper 2/3 choice beef; in other words – the best you can get. All seafood comes fresh from local vendor Trinity Seafood and is purchased daily, so it is never frozen! An interesting aside - the owner of Trinity Seafood is actually the son of the man who Taso’s father bought all his fresh seafood from in NY – WOW! Both sons carried on their fathers’ legacies, and unknown to each other, moved to the same area of Florida. Hand-selected fresh herbs are used to flavor classic dishes and seasonal vegetables are chosen for their freshness, flavor and ability to compliment each separate dish. The sauces, salad dressings, stocks and soups are made from scratch in-house. Pastries are made on the premises, along with the hand-tossed pizza dough. Chef Keith has an amazing culinary story of his own – he owned four restaurants in Manhattan – and is a classically trained chef and pastry chef. “My claim to success is that you are only as successful as those you surround yourself with,” says Taso. “I am blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful people that make up our team. Sabrina, our manager Howie, and our chefs, Keith, Jim, Bill and George, and our great wait staff all play a huge part in the success of Taso Italiano. I could not have done it without them or my investment partner Pete Rostel.”

Taso showed me around his kitchen and it was clear that immaculate perfection is Taso’s goal when it comes to his kitchen. He says, “I will welcome anyone to come back and see our work space because I am so confident that we are beyond the highest standards of cleanliness and organization.” My night at Taso Italiano will be hard to beat anytime soon as Taso and Sabrina were the best of hosts. Taso and Chef Keith helped me choose the perfect combination of dishes to share with my mom Kim. Howie brought over fresh-made blueberry mojitos to get the night started and a delicious basket of warm, crusty bread with an herb and olive oil dipping sauce. We loved everything we tried! The Linguine with Clams was composed of fresh whole clams over linguine with a light, buttery garlic bianco sauce and I loved the sliced pieces of whole garlic mixed into the linguine, magnificent! Chef Keith insisted we try his rack of lamb and he has reason to be proud! Served medium rare and encrusted with garlic, fresh rosemary, mint and basil bread crumbs, all roasted to perfection, the New Zealand rack of lamb literally fell apart at the bone. Served with lamb demi glaze, over a bed of rice pilaf with fresh cut zucchini and Greek style potatoes – this specialty dish is a must-try for foodies! Chef Keith came out with two of his delicious desserts. His tiramisu and can-

noli pastries are fabulous! Specials: On Tuesdays, kids eat free with one purchase of any adult entrée. Wednesdays are for Women, offering free drinks from 4 to 9 p.m. from the full liquor bar. Thirsty Thursdays offer 2-for-1 wine and well cocktails, $1 off beers and $5 appetizer specials! I am a fan of Taso Italiano, like so many other customers. Tim and Sharon say, “We were some of Taso’s first customers. We dine here at least once a week and we are always satisfied. We have never been disappointed!” Taso Italiano is located at 4016 Little Road in New Port Richey. Dine-in, carryout, delivery and catering are available. Big Cat Rescue - Tampa Bay’s Best Kept Secret By Willow Hecht Across from the Citrus Park Mall in Tampa is a little dirt road leading back into the woods. This is Easy Street, and it ends at one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in the world, Big Cat Rescue. About 135 unwanted, abused, and neglected exotic cats live at the sanctuary in large outdoor enclosures. Fifteen species of cat call BCR home, the most variety of any facility in the world. They range from the tiny 4 lb. Geoffroy’s cat to an 800 lb. tiger, and include bobcats, lynx, leopards, cougars, and lions. Most were former pets, and others were rescued from fur farms, circuses, roadside zoos, and backyard breeding facilities. The sanctuary, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit charity, has a two-part mission: 1) to house and care for the cats for the rest of their lives, and 2) to educate the public about issues facing cats in captivity and in the wild. BCR is actively trying to change state and federal laws governing the ownership of and contact with exotic cats. They also have a commitment to ending the trade in exotic cats and their parts. The sanctuary is completely hands-off,

and does not breed, buy, sell, or trade cats. Situated on 45 acres of beautiful woods with a lake in the middle, the refuge is truly a place of peace and safety. Daily animal care, administration, maintenance, and guest relations are done by a volunteer force of nearly 100, as well as eight paid staff. Big Cat Rescue was founded in 1992, almost by accident. BCR’s founder, Carole Baskin, answered an ad in the newspaper advertising bobcat kittens for sale. At the time, she didn’t know that exotic cats make terrible pets, and thought she’d like to have one. When she arrived at the specified address, she found fifty-six bobcat and lynx kittens in tiny, filthy cages. She was told that the place was actually a fur farm, and that the kittens would be slaughtered at one year of age and turned into fur coats. Horrified, she bought all fifty-six kittens and brought them to her home in Tampa. Word of mouth spread that Baskin would take big cats, and she began to devote all of her time to rescues and cat care. Over time, cages were built on the current 45-acre property Baskin acquired in a foreclosure, once a landfill. The mission of the sanctuary and many of its policies have evolved over time into the world-class facility that exists today, accredited by the USDA and the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Many of the cats besides the original fifty-six endured horrific conditions before their rescue. Cheetaro, an Asian leopard, was confined to a corn crib for the first five years of his life, constantly breeding cubs for the pet trade with his mate. They had little shelter from subzero New England winter temperatures. Joseph and Sasha, a male and female lion, were used as photo props, and had their claws and canine teeth removed so

Armani the Leopard they could be chained down and handled by guests. When they came to BCR, Sasha had a collar which had become embedded in her skin and had to be cut away. Sophia, an 18-year old cougar, lived in a chicken coop for 13 years and was suffering from fleas, renal disease, and a botched declaw surgery when she was rescued. All of these cats now have a permanent, safe, and quiet home with toys, good food, and medical care. Visitors to the refuge are allowed for guided tours only. Tours for those over age 10 are an hour and a half long, and are offered every day except Thursday. Children’s tours, for those under age 10, are Saturday at 9am

Joseph the Lion only, and are one hour long. Special tours such as photo tours, feeding tours, and night tours are available with advance reservations. All proceeds from tour donations go to feeding and housing the cats. For tour times, prices, and reservations, call 813-920-4130. Florida Wellness & Rehab Combines Family Medical Care & Chiropractic Care! By Julie Kanehl Many people run from one doctor’s appointment to the next, seeing one physician for a sore throat, and say, a chiropractor for their back. At Florida Wellness & Rehab, patients get the best of both worlds, which can be especially helpful when you know that these experienced doctors really enjoy putting their heads together and putting their patients first. One of the things they are most proud of is their unique approach to medicine, “combining skill and expertise that spans the entire wellness spectrum.” Florida Wellness & Rehab’s Trinity office is located at 1820 Wellness Lane in Building 4 of the Trinity Professional Center, which is at the corner of Little Road and Mitchell Boulevard. Now offering two other locations, one in downtown Tampa on Franklin Street, and the other in Zephyrhills, Florida Wellness & Rehab is popular with patients be-

30

cause they can be treated both medically and holistically all in one place. The Florida Wellness & Rehab Center is a group of physicians from all walks of medical life who can now offer patients a range of services including family medicine, chiropractic medicine, medical acupuncture, massage therapy and physical therapy. The wellness approach is a holistic approach to medicine that is gaining popularity with people all over the world who are tired of treating everything with medication when the side effects can be as bad as the problem. A wellness approach is different because its aim is to treat the whole person from the inside out, first holistically and then medically where necessary, keeping in mind the whole body. For example, a migraine is often treated with medicine, but chiropractic care and acupuncture can help patients who suffer from migraines, even severe bouts of it, without the need for any medication at all. Another example is that while a

who focus on wellness care look deeper and help patients actually help themselves! Stephen Unger, D.C. is a prominent chiropractor in the area, and he has always had a passion for fusing family medicine with chiropractic wellness and care. Dr. Unger previously had a Chiropractic Center off of Duck Slough called Unger Chiropractic, where he and experienced Chiropractor, Brandon Delle Chiaie, D.C., took a holistic and individualized approach to Chiropractic Care with their patients. Now, at The Florida Wellness & Rehab Center, Drs. Unger and Della Chiaie have joined with two other Chiropractors, Edward Leonard, D.C. and Holly M. Ridge, D.C., as well as family care physicians Carol Browne, D.O, and Tanya Gold, M.D. Spanning the three locations, these doctors are able to help their patients from one end of the spectrum to the other, and consult with each other whenever necessary. Dr. Unger says, “We now have Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy and a family medical practice all in one.” Dr. Carol S. Browne has an extensive resume and background as a

physician and academic physician, teaching other osteopathic doctors her techniques. Offering full service primary care, Dr. Browne can help patients with everything from the common cold to long-term medical conditions. She says, “Our philosophy is to provide quality care that is patient-centered. We see our patients as individuals.” Florida Wellness & Rehab is a state-of-the-art facility that has “inhouse” technology like x-rays, laboratories, physical therapy rooms and even diagnostic ultrasound. Together with their three Licensed Massage Therapists, Susan Lyons, Kasse Hays and Sean Gill, this entire group of professionals treats each patient with the goal of improving your health all around, fusing nutrition, wellness, spine alignment and medical care to help you be the most healthy YOU possible. Why Florida Wellness & Rehab Works for Patients Sometimes people say, “I don’t need a chiropractor, I haven’t been in a car accident!” While it’s true that Chiropractic Care is proven to be highly effective in treating those of us who have been in a car accident,

chiropractic care is a whole lot more than a snap and a pop fix. Chiropractic Care is the second largest primary health care profession in the United States, and it’s growing because more and more patients are beginning to appreciate the balance and harmony that comes with being a patient. From jaw pain and neck pain to knee pain, sciatica, scoliosis, headaches and injuries caused by everything from sports to general aging, an experienced Chiropractor can truly change your life. That said, sometimes after an injury, it may take a group of doctors to diagnose you. After my car accident, I went to a lot of different doctors, and none of them seemed to know what the other one was doing for a while. Patients who come to Florida Wellness & Rehab can avoid that problem altogether. Dr. Unger says, “Sometimes I see a patient who has come to me right after a car accident, and I can tell right away that they need to see a medical doctor. When this happens, it’s nice to be able to just let them know that they have to see Dr. Browne, and that we will be able to continue their care together as a team.” He adds, “Recently, while I

was working with a patient, I found that his blood pressure was extremely high and I was able to get him to Dr. Browne right away. In this way, we are able to give our patients the best possible care without having to send them back out into the world with more questions.” The best part, in my own opinion, about Florida Wellness & Rehab is that they don’t just give you a prescription and send you out the door, these physicians walk you through physical therapy; they adjust your neck, your back, your body. Their hands-on approach is personal and effective, and it makes a world of difference. Dr. Browne says, “Our philosophy is to be a cultural authority for evidence-based alternative care.” Florida Wellness and Rehab’s Trinity office is located at 1820 Wellness Lane in Building 4 of the Trinity Professional Center. The facility is open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Florida Wellness & Rehab also has offices in Tampa and Zephyrhills. ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day & Public Policy Conference By Alexis Selby This past month nearly 2,000 people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, family, friends and other advocates, including Cheval resident Gary Dassatti, gathered in Washington, D.C. during ALS Awareness Month for The ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. While in Washington Gary, among with other ALS advocates, met with aides in 4 Congressmen's offices (Representatives Hastings, Rooney, Posey and Bilirakis) as well as with aides for Senator Nelson and Senator Rubio. Gary says, “We were basically seeing if they were aware of what ALS is and asked for continued monetary support from the House and Senate for the ALS Registry (where data is entered by current living pALS (people suffering with ALS) to try to help find a commonality so that a cause may be found. Currently we have no idea what causes ALS, only that Military per-

sonnel are twice as likely to contract this horrible disease. We were also asking for continued monetary support for the ALS Research Program at the Department of Defense; this is very necessary, especially with the Military connection to ALS.” Another individual who attended the conference’s Rally Dinner was Baltimore Raven O.J, Brigance, who has been living with ALS since May 2007 and has been a leading voice in the fight against the disease. It’s Brigance’s first time attending the conference, and it’s the first time they are having a rally to open the festivities. Former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who, like Brigance, is also battling ALS, joined via Skype. The ALS Association hosted this three-day conference in order to empower individuals from across the country with the tools to advocate for policies specifically designed to accelerate the development of treatments for ALS. “During the 3 days, we heard

FL Chapter of ALS is to help with patient care.” O.J., who served as one of the keynote speakers during the dinner, addressed the conference’s attendees and discussed the transformative roles of adversity and resiliency for those battling this disease. Using his computer generated voice he said, “We possess an eternal flame that will burn brightly until we see a cure for ALS realized.” The Ravens’ senior advisor to player development also shared his story at the opening of the 2013 National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. “The fight against ALS has existed for over a hundred years with no cure,” says Brigance. “There is a need for greater awareness, along with funding for research and patient services. My encouragement will remind us of the root of resiliency, which permeates our cause. We will not stop until we find a cure.” While there are many causes to support, Brigance feels ALS is often overlooked when compared to cancer and other more well-known afflictions. Brigance recently visited the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Boston to tour their facilities and

was “excited by the prospects on the horizon.” But a cure can’t be found fast enough in his eyes, he said. He is hoping funding and procedures can be fast-tracked. “My hope is Congress will recognize the devastation of ALS and will champion our cause,” says Brigance. “There are countless researchers looking to unlock the mysteries of ALS. Unfortunately, people are dying in the prime of their lives because the answer isn’t coming quick enough.” Kim Hanna, President and CEO of the ALS Association Florida Chapter, says, “Only through your efforts can we help to achieve O.J.’s and our vision – a world without ALS.” To become an ALS Advocate so that you can lend your voice to help increase government funding for ALS research and advance policies that will impact everyone touched by this horrific disease please visit their website at WebFl.alsa.org. ALS advocates are critical to ensuring that lawmakers understand the urgency of finding treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease!

Groundbreaking News: Dance Extreme Academy to Build New Facility!!! By Julie Kanehl You heard it here first, folks! Dance Extreme Academy (DEA), which is located at 1645 Davenport Drive in Trinity, is already bursting at the seams after only two years of being open in the area. That’s a big deal, so the owner of Dance Extreme Academy, Darlene Jones, has decided to create a brand new studio that will be more than twice the size of the one they currently use. Designing every little detail with the students and their parents in mind, the new facility is due to open in the fall of 2014, and it won’t be hard to find because it will be right across the way from their current studio! Julie Walek, Artistic Director and instructor at Dance Extreme Academy, says, “We currently have more than 200 students, after only being open two years, and the new building will allow us to continue to focus on our commitment to a low student to

38

teacher ratio. We will have four studios in the new building and a tumble track that will be 60 foot by 16 foot, for tumbling and acrobatics.” She adds, “And there will be at least 60 spaces of parking!” The new facility is also going to be adjacent to two other, 2000-sq.-ft. units that will be available for lease when it opens late next year. The entire staff and their students are excited about the opportunity to expand and grow in this way, and they are customizing the new studio to accommodate the many students who want to attend! The staff is also expanding and DEA has carefully chosen a staff that has years of experience and some form of dance background, or like Julie, whom actually went to school to become a dance instructor. Julie says, “We currently have eight staff members and we are growing. In addition to having a dance background our teachers also have extensive dance ed-

ucation and certifications that are maintained yearly. In fact, Dance Extreme Academy’s ballet teacher, Jillian Michaels, will be attending classes at American Ballet Theater in New York City this summer to complete the professional level of her ABT® Teacher Training Intensive in Level 6, 7, and Partnering of the ABT® National Training Curriculum. Also, Michael Jones, who teaches Hip Hop and Contemporary, is on a scholarship at an overseas dance company this summer. Dance Extreme will remain stateof-the-art with a parent lounge that will feature live TV feed from each studio, a performance viewing area, a prop room adjacent to the studios, student café, a sewing room, and a locker area.

DEA Builds A Community of Dance Performing is what it’s all about at DEA, and in addition to performing at their studio, their students get to perform all over town. Dance Extreme Academy has an annual tradition of dancing at the beautiful Wiregrass Mall during the holidays, and they especially enjoy performing for their many friends at the Oakridge Care and Rehabilitation Center. Students also perform for the crowds at

the annual Taste of Trinity Event and the Longleaf Festival. These performances are in addition to the elaborate recital that they put on every year featuring all of their dancers performing a myriad of dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, acrobatics, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre, and adding this year, modern. DEA offers both recreational and competitive dancing opportunities and the learning goes well beyond the classroom. DEA brings talented dancers in from all over to share their techniques and to teach master classes. Nick Young from So You Think You Dance and Kentrell Newton from America’s Best Dance Crew were

some of the amazing master classes that were brought in this year. Also, a cast member from Wicked came to Dance Extreme Academy to teach the students a dance from the award-winning musical and to answer questions about dancing professionally. What an opportunity! It didn’t stop there, because they invited DEA to come to the Straz Performing Arts Center to see what it was like backstage and to see the intricate costumes. Talk about a field trip! DEA’s competition team, the Extreme Team, is a great opportunity for students to take dance to the next level. Students audition each year to become part of this team, and then

they get to compete against other teams across the state. While competition is important, Julie says that she teaches her dancers to just do their best. She says, “It’s a learning experience each time they perform. Competing is all about dedication and commitment to your team. The joy of performing and seeing their hard work pay off is the best reward for these kids.” That’s not to say that they’re not winning! The Extreme Team has already won awards including “Technical Excellence” and “Choreography,” and ”Versatility” showing they exceed in all genres. How amazing is that, after only two years of being open. Stacey Wyman is the Marketing Coordinator, and she says, “We’re a very family-oriented dance studio.” She adds, “We go above and beyond to make sure that our students are exposed to other dance opportunities, even outside our studio walls. For instance, many of the students who attend DEA have auditioned for dance intensives and have won coveted spots. In fact, DEA has more than 10 students who have been selected by various dance companies, from the American Ballet Theater, MODAS and Patel Conservatory. Also some of our other students are continuing their education at the Tampa Bay Tap Festival, Broadway Theatre Dance Project, and the Tampa Bay Ballet.” Jennifer Miller said, “My daughter has been dancing in the area since she was very young and this is her first year at Dance Extreme Academy. We did a lot of research into choosing a new studio this year and I am so happy that we picked DEA. The classes and teachers are superb, and she has thrived since she started last fall. I can truly say that the DEA staff has created a positive, nurturing environment where young girls and boys

can grow as dancers. She is also on the dance team and it has been nothing but wonderful. You will not only receive professional instruction at DEA but you will also feel like family.” Try Dance Camp at Dance Extreme Academy! It’s that time of year, and if your children are dancing around the house asking, “What are we doing today?” Send them to dance camp at DEA! With a new theme every week there are daytime and evening camps available between now and August 3rd. The week of July 22-26, DEA will be offering an Acro & Stretch camp that will include tumbling, acrobatics, jumps, conditioning and stretch intensive techniques. July 29 – August 3, there are two camps being offered simultaneously. One is a Contemporary & Techniques class and the second is a Hip Hop Camp. On August 6 – 8, DEA will be featuring Duncan Cooper in their Master Class program. Duncan, founder of MODAS, received his training at the San Francisco Ballet Company and has been dancing across the world ever since. Dance Extreme Academy would like to extend a welcome to you to visit their Fall Registration event on Saturday, August 10th, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. It’s a great time to come and meet the instructors and staff. Stay tuned to the Neighborhood News & Lifestyles as we document the building and Grand Opening of DEA’s new studio in 2014! Dance Extreme Academy is located at 1645 Davenport Dr. in Trinity. Mitchell High Students Compete at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals By Diane Galemmo After placing second in their category at the state competition in April, a J.W. Mitchell High School Odyssey of the Mind team advanced to the World Finals at the University of Michigan in May. The team consists of J. W. Mitchell High School students Jackie Freitas, Evan Robertson, Alexander Thurston, Joseph Lamar and Kara Talanda, as well as two Seven Springs Middle School students, Caitlin Freitas and Rebecca Roberson. The team is coached by Jennifer Freitas, mother of Jackie and Caitlin. At the World Finals, the team was paired with a German buddy team throughout the week. The students had the opportunity to spend time together and get to know one another. Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their

42

own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program. Sixty teams represented Odyssey’s Gulf Coast Region at the state competition at the University of Central Florida in April. However, only this Mitchell High team scored high enough at the state tournament to advance to the Odyssey of the Mind 2013 World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing. The team raised funds frantically during the months of April and May in order to make the trip. Local businesses, Mitchell teachers, friends, and family members all contributed. The team also held two garage sales, and by combining all of their efforts, they raised enough to pay for most of their trip. Odyssey of the Mind competition consists of three parts: long-term problem, spontaneous, and style. It’s a creative extravaganza where more than 825 teams from all around the world

share their ideas and work. Inspired by Bugs Bunny cartoons, the Mitchell High team members chose a Tasmanian devil named Frank as the centerpiece of their long-term solution. Once Frank’s nine pieces are assembled, the team attaches a sponge to his spinning tail. Frank is just one part of the creative solution to their long-term problem entitled Pet Project. Creativity in overdrive was among the ingredients that led to success for Mitchell’s OotM team. A great deal of planning and rehearsal goes into Odyssey of the Mind, but the judges also want to know that team members can improvise, hence they are also given a spontaneous problem. Preparation for that is trickier. “All we can really do is practice other spontaneous problems from years past,” said Evan Roberson. “That gets the creative juices flowing.” While only a few left the World Finals with a trophy, everyone came out a winner just by solving an Odyssey of the Mind problem and competing on the world stage. The J. W. Mitchell High School team did not win, but they represented their school

Mitchell High team with their German buddy team so well, they won an OMER award. Fewer than 10 OMERS were awarded at the competition. “Spine Center” Continued from page 1 Hahnemann University Program in Neurosurgery in 1994, and passed the American Board of Neurological Surgery with the distinct honor of Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Giannakopoulos has been both the Chief of Staff and The Chairman of Surgery at both Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point and at the former Community Hospital in New Port Richey. While Dr. Giannakopoulos is known for everything from successful spine surgeries to removing brain tumors, I know Dr. Giannakopoulos as my doctor. After getting into a car accident in 2009, and having a terrible reaction to an epidural steroid injection given to me by another doctor, Dr. Giannakopoulos was the first physician to really sit down with me and look at all of my films. Dr. Giannakopoulos ordered his own film, and was able to properly diagnose my back and neck problems. Since then, he has been a great support to me. I can honestly recommend him personally to everyone I meet. He is knowledgeable, experienced, kind and professional.

While Dr. Giannakopoulos is a keenly skilled surgeon, he prefers to provide conservative treatment options where possible. Unlike other doctors who are quick to provide prescription pain pills, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff shy away from doing so. Instead they focus on providing safe and conservative techniques like bracing, physical therapy and interventional pain treatments like Facet Blocks, Epidural Injections and Radiofrequent Nerve Ablations. When the conservative approach is no longer working, Dr. Giannakopoulos is the person to turn to for surgery. He has more hours in the O.R. than many of the other neurosurgeons in the state, and he has also trained extensively in microscopic surgeries. In fact, all of his procedures are performed using microscopic technology. Dr. Giannakopoulos can perform every kind of spinal surgery from minimally invasive surgeries, to surgeries such as Laminectomies, Laminotomies, Foraminotomies, Microdiscectomies and brain surgeries. One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients said, “I have been seeing the Doctor for seven years now. He has kept me out of pain. Last week he per-

I highly recommend Dr. Giannakopoulos.” Dr. Giannakopoulos also specializes in treating Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spine that is caused by the natural wear and tear that our spines experience in our lifetimes. In fact, he believes that this is the #1 spine problem that faces the elderly. Spinal Stenosis causes pain and a problem straightening the spine, leading to a bending over or a haunch. Unfortunately many elderly folks think

that this is just a part of aging that they have to learn to live with, but that’s not necessarily the case. “My focus is to help prevent patients from becoming paralyzed,” says Dr. Giannakopoulos. “If a patient who used to be able to walk two miles can’t get around the grocery store without pain, I can help them. The philosophy of the Neurosurgeon is to restore function and to preserve neurological functions. What happens in the case of severe Spinal Stenosis is that something is encroaching on the spinal

canal, and to cure the problem, you really need to operate. This kind of surgery is safe and provides between 85% and 90% relief of symptoms, and the recovery is generally very quick.” One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s patients wrote, “My mother has had three cervical surgeries and is heading for her first lumbar surgery this week…The staff is always very caring and take care of my questions and FMLA paperwork in record time. They have offered assurances that all will be taken care of and it was done as stated. They even coordinated home nursing care for my mom since I can’t be there for the full six weeks of recovery. When she told me she needed the lumbar surgery, I wanted to make sure Dr. G was the only doctor to have anything to do with her surgery and he is. I’m very happy to know that Dr. G is so thorough and as skilled as he

is. Mom’s recovery has always been weeks less than predicted and she is in her early 60s. Patience is a virtue and his staff is nothing but.” Whether you are having lower back pain, neck pain, suffering from Spinal Stenosis, or are having numbness or weakness in your extremities, Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff can help get you back on your feet again. I know because he really helped me. The Spine Center of Excellence has three locations. The main office is located at 11425 US Hwy 19 in Port Richey. The Brooksville office is located at 11341 Cortez Blvd, and the Trinity location is conveniently located at 2433 Country Place Blvd. For more information or to make an appointment please call (727) 861-2332.

For more information about Gulfside Regional Hospice, call 800-561-4883 or visit www.GRHospice.org . Pasco Sheriff’s Office: Tornado Safety Did you know that Florida is one of the top states for tornado activity? Our location to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean helps to create this weather phenomenon when the warm, moist air from these waters meets the hot, dry land over our state. Our state is also in the path of the several hurricanes and tropical storms which form in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico every year, which can also spawn tornadoes. That is why all Pasco families should have an emergency plan. Your family may not be together when a disaster strikes, so it is important to plan in advance. This includes how you will get to a safe place; how you will contact one another; how you will get back together; and what you will do in different situations. Every emergency plan should in-

clude an emergency kit. This kit should contain: food for at least three days, water, required medicines, a first aid kit, and additional survival items should you have to live without electrical power or should you have to leave your home. An important tool that can save your life and the life of your loved ones is a NOAA Weather Radio. According to FloridaDisaster.org, nearly 75 percent of tornado fatalities in Florida since 1950 have occurred between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., when people are least likely to be tuned into other sources of weather information. A NOAA Weather Radio is the lone government-operated radio system that provides National Weather Service severe weather warnings 24 hours a day. If you live in the path of the severe storm, and your family has a NOAA All-Hazards Weather Radio, the radio will automatically sound an alarm and then broadcast the warning message, regardless of the time of day. The newer weather radios even allow you to program the alarm to sound for specific counties and hazards. If you are hard of hearing or a heavy sleeper, there is even a kit available for the radio that includes a pillow shaker and strobe light which can wake you in the middle of the night.

Part of law enforcement and emergency services mission during extreme weather and disasters is to convince citizens on the importance of evacuations. No one wants to leave the comfort of their home and many people may want to try and stay put to protect their home and belongings. However, emergency management personnel do not issue evacuation orders unless their experience and training lead them to believe that citizens’ lives are in danger. If you receive an order to evacuate, DO SO! Remember the tragic case of citizens who tried to ride out the storm when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005. They later tried to call for emergency assistance but law enforcement and emergency personnel were unable to respond, and many people lost their lives. You can find more information about emergency plans and emergency kits at the Federal Emergency Management Agency at www.ready.gov, and at the Florida Division of Emergency Management at FloridaDisaster.org. He said, “This year we are giving away Justin Bieber tickets but I also wanted to offer something that adults would get excited about too and I included a contest to win Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson tickets. We have a lot of adult patients, too; 30 percent of my patients are adults.” Dr. Albert says, “Social media has become a great platform to run our patient contests through. We have really started using our Facebook page a lot to have a fun interaction with patients and let everyone know about our upcoming events and contests.” Charitable involvement with his local community has always been a priority for Dr. Albert. He is a member and Paul Harris fellow of the Rotary Club of Trinity, whose mission is supporting local children’s charities. Every year, Albert Family Orthodontics hosts a “Candy Buy Back” after Halloween, where sweets are donated to troops stationed overseas. Albert Family Orthodontics also participates in Toys for Tots through the Salvation Army every holiday season. Last year, Albert Family Orthodontics held a ‘Making a Change’ contest for local schools and was able to give $1000 to J. W. Mitchell High School and $250 each to Ozona Elementary and Madeira Beach Fundamental. “We listed all of the schools in the area that my patients go to,” says Dr. Albert. “The top 3 schools with

the most likes on our Facebook page were entered into a random drawing for the top prize. Even though my offices are in Trinity and Palm Harbor, my patients come from all over and the Madeira Beach parents were really competitive.” Dr. Albert truly seems to enjoy interacting with patients and families outside of his office and is always looking for fun ways to show his appreciation. A patient appreciation party is even held every year at Astro Skate where patients get to skate for free and enjoy some fun times! You will always be treated with professional care and the latest and greatest in orthodontics. Take it from his satisfied patients, Dr. Albert does not disappoint! One patient writes, “Our family absolutely loves Jeremy Albert and his staff! He has such a wonderful and friendly demeanor with us and with our children. His office is beautiful and super clean with cool video games for the kids to play on while they wait. The actual patient rarely has to wait over five minutes before they're seen, but the video games are great for the siblings who have to come along to the appointments. There's also Wi-Fi access and great coffee for the parents to access. His staff always greets you with a smile and are so pleasant to work with. I know one of his patients, who is my daughter's best friend, won “best smile” in the yearbook this year.” Get the right orthodontic treatment for your family at Albert Family Orthodontics! You will assuredly enjoy the treatment you receive and all the fun events Dr. Albert has planned for summer and years to come! Albert Family Orthodontics is located in Trinity at Trinity Professional Place, 1806 Short Branch Drive, Suite #102, and in Palm Harbor at 2445 Tampa Road, Suite A. Both locations are open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The offices can be reached at (727) 376-2770 (Trinity) and (727) 781-7475 (Palm Harbor) or visit online at www.albertfamilyortho.com where you will find more information. “Like” Albert Family Orthodontics on Facebook to receive upcoming event and contest information!
