Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

By Matt Selby As you all know, for the past couple months we have been running a contest for our readers. While we have been giving away free press level Tampa Bay Rays’ game tickets to the winners, our readers have given back to us as well. Literally thousands upon thousands of you have entered our contest. We do have 5 separate Neighborhood News and Lifestyles magazines here in the Bay area, so we knew we would get a pretty good response considering we are mailed to more than 80,000 homes in total but when we received over 10,000 entries in the first month, even we were surprised and humbled by the gigantic interaction. We engaged in countless email, phone and even face-to-face conversations with many of our readers. While it was great to hear how much

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

our readers love what we do, we always ask what they think we can do better. The usual response of wanting to see more coupons, more dining features and more pages is a given. Trust me guys, we want the same thing too! We did hear some things, however, that we can put into action right away! The first suggestion that we decided to put into action was a new logo. After at least 10 people said our logo looked dated it got us thinking about a change. After over 20 people suggested a fresh new look we had a meeting and decided to modernize our Neighborhood News and Lifestyles brand. My dad created the design for our logo using red block print in the 90s and let’s be honest, the logo screams 90s! We all know obnoxious, loud and in-your-face was “the thing” in the 90s but these days more and more companies are reap-

ing the benefits of brand recognition by incorporating clear, crisp logos. We wanted to go with something professional, clean and classy. Tony and Ashley Sica, a very talented husband and wife design team who just so happen to be a crucial part of our Neighborhood News and Lifestyles family came up with this new logo and we couldn’t be happier! We hope you like the new look. The second suggestion we took to heart dealt with the name of our website. Since we started this Rays’ tickets contest we’ve had in excess of 50,000 unique visitors to our website each month and over 500,000 page views! Again, while that number is fantastic, if we can do better we are going to do everything in our power to make that happen. Many readers told us the old website was too long and that was the primary cause for typos while searching for us. We decided to make it super easy. The new website is www.NNLFlorida.com and that changes our email as well to info@NNLFlorida.com for advertising and general information, and for editorial submissions you can email editorial@NNLFlorida.com. We hope you guys like these new changes as much as we do!

A Fun, Safe Learning Environment By Marcy Sanford Several years ago when Jolene and Ramesh Pershad were looking for childcare for their children, they had difficulty finding the right place. “At the time there was not a lot of development in the area,” says Jolene. “I had an idea in mind of the perfect day-

14

care center for my children and I had a very hard time finding something that lived up to what I wanted.” Since acquiring Discovery Point Child Development Center in Lutz this past February, Jolene has been making changes to the center to make it a perfect, safe, comfortable place for children to learn, grow, and have fun –

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • www.NNLFlorida.com

she’s made it into the kind of place she wanted for her own children. And parents are taking notice. “There have been major improvements including a safer environment as well as a much friendlier and inviting atmosphere,” said Arlene J. “It’s evident that the kids’ safety, happiness, and educational standards are at the heart of these new owners. Can’t wait to see what else they have in store for this location.” Jolene says that since February they have made major improvements to the classrooms including new

JULY 2014

equipment and technology centers. She says the new curriculum specialist has made improvements to the curriculum so that children at “Gold Seal Accredited” Discovery Point Lutz are having fun learning while they are playing. In fact, Discovery Point’s innovative creative learning helps children develop a love of learning that will last a lifetime. Discovery Point Lutz’s kids loved learning so much this year that their VPK scores were an impressive 96%. Parents like April R. are happy and relived to have found a place

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

where their child is growing academically as well as socially. “I’m a very hands-on parent,” says April. “I like to know who is caring for my son (when you think about it our kids will spend more time during the day with their teachers than with the parents who work full time). So we would drop off and pick up at different times just so we could see how things run when parents are not usually around. No matter what time I would arrive I would see Mrs. Jolene there (7 a.m., 9 a.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and even when driving past the facility late into the evening or weekend she would still be there). I asked her one day if she

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

lived there...her response, ‘I was a Discovery Point parent and I was “that” parent who wanted things to be just right!’ Since she has arrived she has replaced broken or inappropriate toys, painted, added a canopy over the playgrounds and instilled a cleaning policy. When I walk in, it’s bright, cheery and just smells clean!” April goes on to say, “Many of the teachers have been with Discovery Point for years and stayed [through] the transition of owners. Our son’s current teacher Mrs. Mukta welcomed Brayden into her room and within 2 weeks of enrolling, he was able to write his entire name. Something his previous center was not able to achieve due to the constant changing of employees. Shortly after we left our other center a few of Brayden’s friends showed up to join him. When I drop my son off, I know he is in excellent care. I know he is safe and learning something new everyday all while having fun!” In addition to learning new skills

and gaining new knowledge, there is plenty of time for your child to be creative, to play, and to make new friends at Discovery Point Lutz. They have thousands of books for children to enjoy, hundreds of bright toys in each of the rooms, and an endless supply of arts and crafts items. Outside there are three age-appropriate shaded playgrounds, a volleyball court, a basketball court, outdoor art easels, and plenty of outside space for your child to explore and enjoy nature. Students enrolled in the popular afterschool program at Discovery Point Lutz receive help with their homework, have snack time and then time to play outside or work on arts or crafts. The experienced staff will also lead the children in various center activities and structured experiments that make hands-on learning fun and exciting. Discovery Point Lutz also offers extra enrichment programs for elementary school age children like dance, tumbling, and soccer. Discovery Point Lutz picks up children from Mckitrick and Schwarzkopf Elementary Schools in a full-size bus that has seat belts and a telephone on board. In addition to large, bright, colorful rooms for the different age groups at Discovery Point Lutz, there

is a cafeteria that is central to the Center. At Discovery Point Lutz they know that a balanced diet everyday helps children stay healthy and grow strong, and served daily are hot, nutritious meals featuring kid-approved foods with a lot of variety. Children eat together and are encouraged to use good manners and social skills during mealtimes. At Discovery Point Lutz, your child’s safety is a top concern. A single, front-door entryway can only be accessed by your own personalized code. Each room is equipped with cameras and microphones. And all Discovery Point Child Development Centers employees are CPR and first aid certified. Whether you need all-day care for your toddler, a VPK program for your 4-year-old, or afterschool care for your elementary school age child, you’ll find the perfect place for your little one at Discovery Point Lutz. Chef Christopher Yoder A Walk In the Garden Chef Chris gave us the exclusive opportunity to explore his backyard garden; more of an urban farm as there are rows and rows of spices and vegetables blooming in the summer sun. His knowledge of spices and plants is extensive. “I like to leave as little to chance as possible, so I do the growing as well as the cooking. So in a sense I start making people’s

Patch of Earth Tampa Culinary Entertainment is the proud to have created and sponsor the local not-for-profit organization called “Patch of Earth” which promotes and teaches even the stoniest

The organization will be accepting volunteer applications starting in September 2014 on the website patchofearth.org. For more information, contact Chris at 407-791-9832.

A Message from Tampa Culinary Entertainment “We look forward to building our relationship with all of our community and it starts with a conversation,” says Chef Chris. “Business is more than growth in profits, it’s about growth in the people who make all of this possible.” He loves a quote from Dave Mitchell, the former curator of the Edinburgh Botanical Garden in Edinburgh, Scotland, who said, “You have to grow folk. You don’t grow folk, you don’t grow nothing!” Chef Chris shares, “We quote this because it is a testament to our philosophy and our ideology. We want to create exciting experiences because we want to improve upon the happiness that makes us better humans. It’s a pleasure to be a part of this community growth. Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. We called Grout Tech and we are extremely pleased with our results!

With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! “Dr. Albert” Continued from page 1 orthodontic care affordable to all. We will miss our visits to his office. Dr. Albert Family Orthodontics comes highly recommended in this household.” While kids absolutely love Albert Family Orthodontics, it’s perfect for adults too. Casey Odell writes, “Teeth came out PERFECT! Love the results! I was a little nervous when I first made an appointment, seeing as how I am a little bit older, but I couldn’t be happier! The office is nice, clean, and modern. Staff and Dr Albert were super friendly, helpful, and ready to answer any questions and work with you. I will be recommending anyone and everyone that needs a perfect smile to come here!” Dr. Albert grew up locally and truly has become a leader in the community, where he now lives with his family. An alumnus of local East Lake High School, Dr. Albert now brings his services to the Pasco and Pinellas communities as a specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. A graduate (with honors) of The University of Florida’s College of Dentistry, he also completed

30

his Orthodontic Residency, received his Orthodontics Certificate, and earned his Master’s of Science Degree from UF. This year, Dr. Albert was privileged to take part in two important outreach projects that provided free dental care to Floridians and abroad in Haiti. Mission Possible! Locally, Dr. Albert joined other dental professionals to provide free dental care to 1,660 people at the first Florida Mission of Mercy (FLAMOM) event, which was held at the Florida State Fairgrounds on March 28-29 of this year. Dr. Albert says, “With the help of over 1,400 volunteers, we provided 8,000 dental procedures equaling approximately $1.1 million dollars’ worth of free care.” When Pastor Douglas Poole of Cypress Meadows Community started planning a mission trip to Haiti, Dr. Albert stepped up to volunteer along with other members of his church, not really knowing what to expect. They went to an outskirt community on the northwestern coast of Haiti where people haven’t received much outside help due to the remote location. Dr. Albert explains, “It was a leap of faith. There

Dr. Albert feels priveleged to have been able to go and help people in Haiti and local people in need at the Florida Mission of Mercy event this year was no setup other than a chair, instruments and anesthetic, but we were still able to help a lot of people. I pulled 39 teeth; extractions are a great way to help people in those circumstances because it eliminates the pain and prevents infection.” Dr. Albert is thankful to the many local dentists who donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. “We had three large suitcases full of donated supplies from our generous local dentists. It is sad to say, but for a lot of the children there, they did not have

their own toothbrush or any way to clean their teeth. They were clutching those toothbrushes like the best gift you could imagine!” Dr. Albert is humble about the great success of Albert Family Orthodontics and is very appreciative of his patients and the community’s trust in him. So, he does his best to give back – both to his patients and the community. Brilliantly, he blends contests with community outreach, such as the recent Pet Palooza contest. “Our patients posted pictures of

themselves with their pets and had a chance to win gift cards to PetSmart, and for every picture posted, we donated $3 to the Humane Society. It was another way to get people engaged and a neat and fun way to give back to the community.” Once again this year, Albert Family Orthodontics held its “Making a Change” contest for local schools and was able to give $1,000 to Dayspring Academy, $250 to Seven Springs Middle School, and $250 to River Ridge Middle School. “I went to each school and met with the principals to give them the check

personally,” shares Dr. Albert. “They had immediate needs and I was so happy that we were able to help.” To decide the winners of the “Making a Change” contest, Albert Family Orthodontics lists all of the schools in the area that their patients go to on its facebook page, and people vote for their favorite school. The top three schools with the most likes are then entered into a random drawing for the top prize. Some of Dr. Albert’s contests are just to give back to his patients, like a recent contest that utilized the popular website Pinterest. “Re-Pin to Win” was super easy; all that was required to be in the running to win an Xbox One was to re-pin a graphic design provided by the Albert Family Orthodontics. The “Summer of Music and Smiles” contest, though, is a definite

favorite of patients of all ages. This year’s concerts to win include four tickets to Luke Bryan’s September 6 concert and four tickets to One Direction on October 3. The “Summer of Music and Smiles” contest runs from July through August, and to enter, Albert Family Orthodontics’ patients just post a picture of themselves on facebook and have their friends vote for them to win. Community is important to Dr. Albert, who is a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of Trinity. Every year, Albert Family Orthodontics hosts a “Candy Buy Back” after Halloween, where sweets are donated to troops stationed overseas. Albert Family Orthodontics also participates in Toys for Tots through the Salvation Army every holiday season. Besides all the fun and games, Dr. Albert provides conveniences that many other offices don’t have, from

self check-in options and free Wi-Fi, to freshly brewed Keurig Coffee and freshly baked Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chip cookies. The wait is never long, and there is plenty of entertainment from the large flat-screen televisions to XBOX Kinect and iPad kiosks, loaded with the latest apps and movies. Patients and their families love Albert Family Orthodontics in Palm Harbor and Trinity!
