Out With The Old In With The NEW By Matt Selby As you all know, for the past couple months we have been running a contest for our readers. While we have been giving away free press level Tampa Bay Rays’ game tickets to the winners, our readers have given back to us as well. Literally thousands upon thousands of you have entered our contest. We do have 5 separate Neighborhood News and Lifestyles magazines here in the Bay area, so we knew we would get a pretty good response considering we are mailed to more than 80,000 homes in total but when we received over 10,000 entries in the first month, even we were surprised and humbled by the gigantic interaction. We engaged in countless email, phone and even face-to-face conversations with many of our readers. While it was great to hear how much

our readers love what we do, we always ask what they think we can do better. The usual response of wanting to see more coupons, more dining features and more pages is a given. Trust me guys, we want the same thing too! We did hear some things, however, that we can put into action right away! The first suggestion that we decided to put into action was a new logo. After at least 10 people said our logo looked dated it got us thinking about a change. After over 20 people suggested a fresh new look we had a meeting and decided to modernize our Neighborhood News and Lifestyles brand. My dad created the design for our logo using red block print in the 90s and let’s be honest, the logo screams 90s! We all know obnoxious, loud and in-your-face was “the thing” in the 90s but these days more and more companies are reap-

Westchase Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

ing the benefits of brand recognition by incorporating clear, crisp logos. We wanted to go with something professional, clean and classy. Tony and Ashley Sica, a very talented husband and wife design team who just so happen to be a crucial part of our Neighborhood News and Lifestyles family came up with this new logo and we couldn’t be happier! We hope you like the new look. The second suggestion we took to heart dealt with the name of our website. Since we started this Rays’ tickets contest we’ve had in excess of 50,000 unique visitors to our website each month and over 500,000 page views! Again, while that number is fantastic, if we can do better we are going to do everything in our power to make that happen. Many readers told us the old website was too long and that was the primary cause for typos while searching for us. We decided to make it super easy. The new website is www.NNLFlorida.com and that changes our email as well to info@NNLFlorida.com for advertising and general information, and for editorial submissions you can email editorial@NNLFlorida.com. We hope you guys like these new changes as much as we do!

Local Author Pens The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas Series By Julie Kanehl If you have young kids, you know how the bedtime routine can go. The goal is to have a squeaky clean, happy and cuddly youngster ready to sit in your lap for a story before eagerly and excitedly hopping into bed. I mean, we’re excited about the thought of sleeping, why aren’t they? Well, one day a local father of two was wondering the same thing when his son came in to see him dressed head to toe like a firefighter – hat and all, with a book in his hand, saying “I’m ready for bed!” That same father was just about to say, “You can’t wear that to bed,” when he paused and thought, “Why not?” In fact, it spurred an idea that became a book, and that book is well on its way to becoming a popular series of children’s books that puts children right into the story, for each book comes with a matching pair of pajamas! That father is Anthony Pesce, an inspiring young man and married father of two boys. Pesce’s positive attitude and hard work ethic have made him a success in other fields of work, from owning his own car detailing

company, to doing marketing and PR for the ceiling repair company that he now owns. Pesce has more than enough to keep himself busy, but he thought that maybe a book that encouraged kids to read before bed, one that would encourage children to chase their dreams, and help with the going-to-bed-routine in the process was a good idea. He was right! Parents and kids agree! Anthony’s real passion is helping families to grow closer and spend quality time together before bed, while encouraging an early love of reading. He praises his wife, Liza, for always reading to their children every night, and believes that books, like his new series, are a great way for children to gain confidence in reading. Pesce says, “Our motto is ‘Dream big and anything can happen!’ Each book comes with a pair of pajamas that matches the ones in the book, and it makes the children feel like they’re part of the story! They get dressed up to go to bed! That’s the key to it. It lets their imagination run wild.” He adds, “It also gives kids insight into other people’s occupations.

They know what their moms and dads do, but they don’t necessarily know what other people do.” The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas series begins with main character, Jacob, who is giving his mother a hard time about getting ready for bed. Well, this smart mom offers Jacob some Magical Pajamas that happen to look like a firefighter’s suit. Jacob, who dreams of becoming a firefighter some day, jumps into his pajamas, races into bed, and is off on an adventure to save the day! This beautifully written children’s book has become a bit of a local sensation, Local father and author Anthony Pesce with his with books and matching wife Liza and their sons who were the inspiration pajamas being sold nearby behind the book that makes bedtime fun for kids. at The Turtle’s Nest, which is in the Trinity Village was excited to see that children of all Center Plaza, as well as on their webages wanted to read it! “Originally, I was only ordering small pajamas, but I’ve had so many children of all ages request pajamas, that now I’m ordering sizes for children up to 10 years old,” Pesce said. Since his first book has come out, Pesce has experienced a lot of success around here, and word is getting out! He’s even been invited to share his story and his passion for young readers at local schools and churches. In fact people from all over are starting to catch on, Pesce just returned from New York City, where he had a popular booth at an Expo there. The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas was

a huge hit in NYC! Pesce says, “I’ve written 13 books in the series, and I have three books going to press right now. It’s exciting! The next three to come out feature a zookeeper, a police officer and a chef.” What a great opportunity for children to put the electronics down and spend quality time, whether parents are doing the reading, or early readers are doing the reading themselves. If you’re looking for a great book that will inspire your children to read, while teaching them about helping others, you’re going to love The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas series! The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas is available to be ordered through their website at www.pajamaadventures.com, as well as from The Turtle’s Nest in the Trinity Village Center Plaza. More adventures are coming, so stay tuned to all the magic happening by liking their Facebook page! Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy “Where We Grow Tomorrow’s Leaders” Submitted by Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy is a pioneer day care center leveraging technology and engagement activities to help enhance the early learning process. While many shy away from technology and games for learning, this center focuses on helping their students to look more deeply into a concept and work with each student’s individual learning style using a variety of techniques and tools. Today’s young people are individuals who have been engaged in virtual play and learning at a very early age, through cell phones, tablets and video games, and when the formal learning environment does not keep pace, students can become bored. “We have a lot of things to offer,” says owner and director Shambray Levy, “better space, an excellent curriculum and great learning techniques. In addition, our prices are very affordable and there are no registration fees.” Shambray runs Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy with the

14

JULY 2014

help of her attentive, caring staff, and together they strive to provide a positive, fun experience for children of all ages, from pre-school age through 11 years old. Shambray adds, “We are very loving, and strive to be your child’s home away from home.”

Skills Mastery Through the use of software, students are taught to reinforce their skills, which are then mastered in real time classroom activities. The students can work towards a goal, choose actions and experience the consequence of an action along the way; which can later lead to a teachable moment. This method keeps the students highly engaged in practicing behaviors and through this process can easily transfer to real life application. Software programs, if used correctly, can both improve and enhance a young child’s coordination and visual skills. It helps to challenge kids to become better by motivating them with problems, as well as increasing their creativity, critical thinking and spatial reasoning. The use of technology and soft-

ware can be challenging, entertaining, and complicated, which in turn will improve, rather than deteriorate, concentration. For instance, recent studies have determined that software users are able to keep track of and pick out objects from a cluttered environment better than a child of the same age who has rarely interacted with these learning methods. At Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy the software is specifically selected as resources to teach and reinforce academic area, such as math, reading, science, and even foreign language.

Teachers At Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy the teacher is still a very necessary component; however their role shifts from delivering content to facilitating learning, by guiding their students through the learning process, supplementing information and building on learning outcomes. Technology allows the teacher to keep pace, as our world is changing at a rate faster than we ever thought possible; yet in many ways education

Shambray (R) and her daughter NaTisha (L) has continued to model prior methods. With the advent of these new teaching tools, such as software, the emphasis is on preparing young minds to master the learning before them. Using learning software offers something positive, special, new and interactive to the academic process. At Citrus Park Learning Academy their core beliefs are that: 1. Learning Should be fun 2. Failure is good 3. Each student should be able to progress at his/her own pace

Westchase Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Collaboration The instructors at Citrus Park Learning Academy also use educational software to help teach children how to collaborate with others. Students are paired with others to learn how to work in teams, which is essential to future success in the public school system. Through the process of collaboration, young people learn to share, seek the help of others, share tasks, support each other, and understand the value of collective wisdom. This method not only keeps the students up to speed academically, but the interaction with their peers and the support of their classmates is an enormous incentive to learning.

Problem Solving Another benefit of this new approach is that the child learns other valuable lessons, such as how to handle mistakes, allowing them to explore options and stay persistent until a solution evolves. Through this cycle of trying and failing and than trying again, a child, when supplemented with guided instruction, discovers how to be successful with life’s challenges. Using software products helps the young mind to learn that there is often

more than one way to achieve a goal. At a young age, children learn how to trouble shoot, problem solve, and collaborate with others to find solutions. Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy – “where we grow tomorrow’s leaders” – can help provide the foundation your child will need to navigate their learning in a rapidly changing world. Citrus Park Children’s Learning Academy is located at the corner of Gunn Hwy and Beaty Grove Drive at 8003 Beaty Grove Drive in Tampa. The academy is open Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information please call (813) 510-3901 or (813) 270-0100, email citrusparklearningacademy@yahoo. com or visit Facebook.com/CitrusParkLearningCenter.

During my visit each employee I spoke with had superior knowledge about different beer tastes, the breweries each brew was from and suggestions that suit your palate. Not only are the bartenders highly knowledgeable, they are craft beer enthusiasts themselves, so they enjoy helping you find what you are going to love! Mike Bell has traveled across the country experiencing and finding craft beers and has watched the craft beer scene grow over the past ten years. He traveled in his RV for a while to every brewery and tap house he could find in order to seek out the best ideas for House of Beer. The result of all his hard work and research is phenomenal; a comfortable and fun atmosphere that flows cohesively with the delicious beer flow! Jeremy Denny is a Florida local and has been a chef for over fourteen years. His experience as an international chef has allowed him to taste and experience more than 7,000 beers

throughout his travels! His passion is creating delicious menu items that perfectly complement the beers at House of Beer. Jeremy is a brewer himself and understands the detailed and timely process it takes to create a one of a kind brew. These guys have enthusiasm for craft beer and since they get to do what they love everyday, their passion shines through in their work. If you are new to drinking craft beers, Mike and Jeremy are confident that you will find one you love at Citrus Park House of Beer.
