Community News Briefs Pasco County Public Transportation Added Buses & Cross-County Service Early in 2012, Pasco County Public Transportation announced the purchase of 8 new modernized buses. The buses are equipped with security camera systems that enhance the safety and security of the riding public as well as the drivers. In addition, a sound insulation package provides for a more comfortable, quiet ride. The newer buses offer low-floor passenger access for ease of boarding and alighting through front and rear doors and can carry up to 34 passengers. These buses were funded 100% through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In addition to those transit vehicles, 5 more para-transit vehicles were purchased, allowing PCPT the capacity to serve more people in need. These particular vehicles hold up to 12 passengers and 2 wheelchairs.

6

Cross-County Service Route 54 – The Cross County Connector is the first PCPT transit route to offer service spanning the entire east-west length of Pasco, while opening up service within the central Pasco region. This route now ties together the transit services that were operating separately on each side of the county. Route 54 connects with Route 30 in Zephryhills and Route 23 New Port Richey and includes access to the Hillsborough transit commuter express bus (HART Route 51X) at The Grove — twice in the morning and returning twice in the evening. Buses will travel along S.R. 54 every two hours from 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Destinations includes: Medical Center of Trinity, Mitchell Ranch Plaza, Super Target in Odessa, Collier Commons, the Shops at Wiregrass, The Florida Hospital, The Grove, Zephyrhills Plaza, and the Zephyrhills City Hall/Library. Mike Carroll, General Manager of Pasco County Public Transporta-

tion, said riders and residents had been asking for such a route for six or seven years. In the interim, this corridor continues to develop into a major east-west growth center. Carroll said it takes about an hour and 45 minutes to travel the entire Route 54 from end to end. FDOT is funding this service under the Transit Corridor Grant Program. pected to generate additional revenue through a third-party vendor. This vendor will sell ad space to businesses on the interior and exterior of PCPT buses, which will include full or partial exterior wraps as well as inside placards. First year revenue is expected to be approximately $63,000, with annual increases occurring based on guaranteed minimums. Under the compensation structure, up to an estimated $250,000 would be generated by year 4 of the contract. This revenue will supplement funding in support of operations associated with public transportation.

Brain Balance Achievement Centers Where Every Kid Connects With Success By: Kristy Needham, proud mother of Zeke. Back story: My son Zeke is ten years old and is one of the joys of my life. He is a hard worker with an amazingly good attitude. Zeke is compassionate, kind and sincerely wants to please by helping and doing the right thing. He is kind to everyone he meets and smiles all the time. At three, he started speech and occupational therapy, which was recommended by his pediatrician and his preschool, and he tested within the normal limits of both. At five, he started to read, so instead of another year of preschool, we wanted him to be challenged and had him attend Kindergarten – he excelled! At six, his first grade teacher (with 15 years of experience) suspected he was not producing work commensurate with the amount of effort he pro-

10

vided, stating, “He’s doing fine, but there is something there. He is so smart and he works so hard, but there is something there that we are missing and I can’t figure out what it is.” At seven, his second grade teacher, who has never met or communicated with his previous teacher, shared the same sentiment. She stated, “On a scale from 1-10 he is as smart as a 10 and works as hard as a 10, but he produces work at a five. I don’t know why, but he is working harder than he should have to and is not producing the work that he is capable of mentally.” I saw it. Homework was taking him a really long time and spelling words became brutal for him. He wasn’t distracted and he wasn’t lazy. Zeke was working hard, yet not getting a lot done. In all of his written work, letters were backwards. I would point out to him a backwards letter and he would erase it and write it the exact same way. He understood the concepts and got

the ideas, but he just couldn’t get through his homework. Even at home he was a hard worker, yet he would frequently forget instructions and have to check a chart several times a day for sequences in a daily routine. At eight, he was still struggling and was intimidated by kids his own age. His outgoing, jovial personality was changing and he became timid and withdrawn. His confidence plummeted. Homework that should’ve taken Zeke 15 minutes took him 1-1 ½ hours. His perception of himself, other kids and school changed and he started to have negative thoughts and talk derogatively about himself. It was not going in a good direction and everything was happening so quickly. After a lot of paperwork, a lot of meetings and several observations from two different school counselors, one counselor recommended that we tape a note to the top of his desk that said, “Stay focused on your task until it is finished.” I wanted to scream –

this addresses minor symptoms, not the problem or the root cause of the problem. All of his teachers now see there is “something there” but they don’t know what it is. After testing Zeke’s vision, he started wearing glasses to school and started vision therapy sessions for an hour, twice a week for 6 months. In addition, Zeke worked half an hour to an hour of homework for vision therapy each day – there was no real success. Next, he was diagnosed ADHD inattentive. Upon pediatrician recommendation, Zeke tried three different medications with no real success - just varying side effects. He was proclaimed to have, “dyslexic tendencies” and “showing evidence of Audio Processing Disorder.” There was no plan to help him; no action items. There was nothing we could do. I know he is working incredibly hard and has a positive attitude I wish I had when dealing with difficulty.

involved in each and his confidence and self esteem are getting lower at each attempt to help him. He is still struggling and he knows it. After looking at Zeke’s work, the director made the following statements: “It looks like he is Pictures of Zeke, before (L) and after (R) beginning a hard worker. Are multitasks hard for him? (Yes.)” He has my results. Worse – we spent a lot of attention. He is completely accurate money, time and effort for each. without ever meeting Zeke. Then he Worse still – Zeke has been aware and

said the statement that changed my mind completely – “I know what this is, and I can help him.” In six years not one person was willing to say this. I started to cry. I talked it over with my husband (who was in Afghanistan on assignment) and we decided – we are going to do the program; but this is THE LAST thing we are going to do before we stop trying to fix whatever this is and accept it for what it is. If this is a struggle our son will have for the rest of his life, our challenge as parents will be to help him find his way successfully.

The Staff at Brain Balance Zeke was exposed to four people, three times a week that were, and still are, intensely focused and passionate about Zeke’s success. A constant source of encouragement, the staff cares not just about Zeke, but about our other children and our family. The staff at Brain Balance counseled and encouraged me during times of frustration and fear. Every day we were there for the appointments, someone would come out to the waiting room and talk with our family. On more than one occasion, the director pulled me into the office to talk privately about my concerns. I appreciate the time, effort and caring everyone on staff at Brain Balance showed to our family. It is obvious this is an office wanting to help kids and their families succeed – in more ways than academically. They celebrated each success with us and encouraged and challenged Zeke.

Our Results Zeke is no longer on the ADHD scale. He no longer has letter reversals in his writing and no longer shows any evidence of Dyslexia. Zeke no longer shows any evidence of Audio Processing Disorder – I didn’t know

this was even a possible outcome. This program has changed Zeke’s life, the life of our family and the dynamic between Zeke and his brothers. I no longer worry or have anxiety over Zeke’s academic life. We started the program just before he started 3rd grade (again) in fall 2011. Zeke was a good reader, but preferred books lower than his level of reading – 2nd grade level books. He ended the year with a book report on his favorite book – an 8th grade level book. He started off the year really struggling with writing. His first writing earned a 1 from the school district writing assignment. One is considered first grade level. His final writing of the year was a 4 – fourth grade level. I talked with his teacher frequently to see how he was doing in the class socially and emotionally. What do other kids think of him? What does he think of himself? He is well liked in class and is considered one of the “smart kids.” He often finishes assignments first. His grades in math and science are consistently in the top of the class. His entire academic life and outlook have changed in one year. In the beginning of the year, Zeke was a scared, defeated boy; afraid he was stupid. I could see it even in his school pictures and how he related to other kids. Now, he is a happy, confident kid who loves school. He is so proud of his grades and the work he does. I love that he smiles all the time again. Great People and Fresh Ingredients Meet at The Gathering Place in Lutz By Julie Kanehl The Gathering Place is a bright, beautifully decorated new family restaurant that gathers more than just the good people of Lutz and beyond. In fact, this unique and family-friendly eatery gathers local ingredients for its impressive menu including local beef, pork, produce, and even beer to serve some of the freshest food in town. Owned by Mother/Son team, Sandy and Chris Fuller, The Gathering Place is located on N. Florida Avenue just minutes from Land O’ Lakes and Tampa. This fresh and inviting restaurant opened its doors in March of this year, and has drawn people back again and again for their specialty woodfired pizzas, tapas, unique entrées and more. When the Fullers opened The Gathering Place, they were passionate about creating a menu that was fresh, local and delicious. They wanted to support the local farms, produce stands and businesses while creating a friendly atmosphere for people to meet, eat and enjoy. They succeeded in doing so and created a restaurant that offers indoor or outdoor seating, a locally stocked bar, a wood-fire pizza oven, live entertainment, a semi-private lounge and more. The Fullers have put their hearts into The Gathering Place, and have always wanted to have their own restaurant. Sandy actually owns her own dessert catering business called Sandy’s Drunken Cakes and has made her scrumptious liquor and rum cakes for restaurants all over the bay area. Chris has been in the restaurant business for many years and took this opportunity to open a place that he and his family are passionate about. Together, this is

14

their first family endeavor and the fact that the restaurant is familyowned translates in the little details, the personal attention by the staff, and the quality and taste of the food. Working together with their chef Mike Webster, the menu has been carefully crafted to surprise and impress a variety of tastes. The Gathering Place is open for lunch and for dinner and the menu kicks things off with some really unique appetizers and tapas. For example, their most popular starter is the Cuban Nachos, which are crispy plantains topped with their all natural pulled pork, black bean and corn salsa and served with a drizzling of mojo sour cream sauce. Another favorite item on the tapas list is the Gator Bombs. Welcome to Florida! Gator Bombs are made with chipotle and the tender gator tail is finely chopped and stuffed into peppadews with a secret cheese sauce and then beer battered. Other options include Crab Cakes, Bacon and Beer Cheese Fries, Chicken Wings, Conch Fritters and more. If you are interested in soups and salads, The Gathering Place has a lot of offerings. In addition to a soup of the day, their menu offers a Loaded Potato soup, and a “Rainbow Stew” which is made with local summer veggies and a seasoned vegetable broth. There are five salad options including a delicious salad named Heirloom Tomato Caprese, as well as a Greek salad, a Shrimp and Spinach salad, a

Smoked Chicken salad and even a “Skinny Caesar” salad. If you like pizza, then you won’t want to miss The Gathering Place’s wood-fired pizzas. Homemade dough flies through the air by the wood burning oven, and then the pizza chefs add the ingredients that make the pizza so successful. Customers enjoy eating their pizzas fresh from the oven. A perfect blend between crispy and chewy, their pizza menu offers a myriad of choices, including some of their specialty pies. Their Taco Pizza is completely unique and is topped with corn and black bean salsa, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, taco meat, jalapenos, black olives and sour cream. As tasty to eat as it is to look at, you can expect the table next to you to want to order one too. In addition to favorites like the Margherita and Pizza Blanca pizzas, they also offer a Greek pizza they call the Aphrodite, which is made with marinara, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, mozzarella, red onion, green pepper and rosemary. There’s also a locally named pizza called “Lutz Boy,” which is a nod to the great BBQ in the area, made with house smoked chicken, BBQ sauce, drunken caramelized onions (beer soaked!) and mozzarella. The sky is the limit, because of course you can build your own. Sandy says, “My favorite is the ‘Pizza Verde,’ but we have a lot more on our menu than pizzas. We have great sandwiches and entrees too.”

The lunch menu displays a variety of excellent sandwich offerings including a fresh grouper sandwich, a “Mojo Pulled Pork” sandwich, a “Free Range Burger” made with organic grass-fed beef, a Reuben, a Cuban and more. Also on the lunch menu is a “Pick 2” special between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. where customers can receive half a sandwich and half a salad or a cup of homemade soup. The dinner menu ramps it up with entrées to please every member of the family. These dishes offer excellent portions at affordable prices in a variety of styles including Italian favorites like Lasagna, Mushroom Ravioli, Seafood Paella Risotto and Rosemary Parmesan Crusted Pork Chops. Other options include favorites like Grouper Tacos, Stuffed Chicken Breast, Free Range Meat Loaf, Fish and Chips and my favorite, the Three Little Piggy Mac & Cheese, which is a grown-up version of everyone’s childhood favorite. The Gathering Place has three great specials that are too good not to mention. On Tuesday, you can get a free craft beer when you order a burger. On Wednesday, you can get $5 cheese pizzas all day, and on Thursday they offer a 50% discount on their bottles of wine. Thursday sounds like a great night to come in for pizza and vino! Kids are more than welcome at The Gathering Place, and the owners have created the perfect Kids Menu by keeping it simple, making it affordable and including a drink and a dessert! All of their favorites, like macaroniand-cheese, chicken tenders, cheese pizza and a burger are available with a drink, a side and a special dessert for less than $6. That’s hard to beat!

Just a few customer favorites at The Gathering Place are Cuban Nachos (left), Taco Pizza (middle) & Sandy’s famous Chocolate Covered Banana Rum Cake with Jungle Love ice cream

The dessert menu is always changing, and is sure to include one of Sandy’s famous “drunken cakes.” I had the opportunity to try her Chocolate Covered Banana Rum Cake, which is honestly one of the best cakes I’ve ever had. Served with a historic Tampa treat called Jungle Love ice cream, Sandy’s cakes come in 14 different rotating flavors and are not to be missed. Other dessert options include cheesecake with a variety of toppings depending on the day of the week.

The Cave Lounge The Cave Lounge is a really unique entertaining and dining space that can be found inside The Gathering Place. Once a wine cellar, The Cave Lounge is now a swanky semiprivate retreat that combines oldworld charm, like wooden doors and stone walls, with modern flair, like plush chairs and pillows and beautiful pendant lighting. The perfect place to celebrate a small birthday party or have a small anniversary party, The Cave Lounge can be reserved for parties of 20 or less.

The Gathering Place has a fully stocked bar that focuses on drawing in a large number of ever-changing local beers that they keep on tap, along with everyone’s favorite line-up of bottled beers. In addition to local beers, cocktails, a nicely sized wine list, and regular favorites, there are a number of dessert drink specials. Chris says, “Our most popular cocktail is ‘The Walking Dead’ our take on the Zombie.” Along with tasty food and a unique atmosphere, The Gathering Place also offers live entertainment on the weekends. The Fullers are looking to extend the hours and allow the

restaurant to become more of a lounge at night after the dinner hours have passed, so stay tuned and stop by and see what’s come together at The Gathering Place. The Gathering Place WoodFired Oven is located at 16319 N. Florida Ave. in Lutz. They are closed on Monday and open Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.–10 p.m. or later, and on Sunday, 12 p.m.–8 p.m. or later. Reservations are available but not required. For additional information, please call (813) 280-2978 or visit online at www.TheGatheringPlaceTampa.com.

After witnessing the benefits my mother has experienced, I have come to strongly believe in the benefits of cranial sacral therapy. Working with all ages of patients in Missouri gave Dr. Browne the opportunity to help with a variety of medical needs, from those of aging patients to the littlest newborns. The Missouri Department of Health referred several newborns who were unable to nurse to Dr. Browne for cranial sacral therapy; after working ever so gently on the babies, she was successful in helping them to properly breastfeed. As an Osteopathic Physician, Dr. Browne has extra training in the musculoskeletal system and how it works. “My goal is to restore patients to normal function as much as possible,” shares Dr. Browne. “I strive to help the anatomy to be as normal as possible so the physiology is as functional as possible. LAKE FRONT BEACH CLEANING Makes Lakes & Ponds More Enjoyable! By Jeff Berlinicke Charles Holloway and Jerry Muncey are men who clearly have no problems getting down and dirty. It comes with the job. Charles and his wife Donna, and their nephew and business partner Jerry Muncey are used to it. They run the Lake Front Beach Cleaning business in Odessa and do work all over the Tampa Bay area, cleaning out lakes, ponds and swamps using numerous techniques to make the areas cleaner for beachfront homeowners, as well as swimmers who want to swim in clear waters. The work that Charles Holloway and Jerry Muncey do isn’t easy, con-

It takes a lot of hard work to remove excess vegetation to get lakes and ponds back to the natural white sand bottom. There is no lakefront beach or pond cleaning job that is too big or too small for Lake Front Beach Cleaning – a company that prides itself on earning and keeping a stellar reputation over the past 33 years. The Holloways started their business in 1979. Longtime Tampa-area residents, they came up with the idea to clean out the lakes and ponds in the area when they transformed their own property, located on Lake Alice, into a

beautiful oasis. Donna explains, “Our own beach was absolutely gorgeous and after cleaning our lakefront and making it into our own personal paradise, we knew that there was a need for this type of service in the area. We turned these lakefront properties that we worked on into a paradise for swimmers. We have many, many very valued customers since 1979, and a great number have been repeat customers.” The concept was so new when the business started that the Tampa phone book didn’t even have any listings for pond cleaning, so they are the pioneers in that field. “No one specialized in this serv-

Showing them a before and after photo book, we explained everything that we do, from cleaning the lakes and ponds along with weed control. Word of mouth started to spread quickly.” The job itself can be tough and requires a professional since it is illegal to use equipment to clean up the lakes. The Holloways have special shovels and rakes and are able to get rid of unwanted roots one at a time. Sometimes Charles even has to go underwater to get rid of a root, but with specialized tools, he gets the job done, no matter how long it takes.

Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre By Julie Kanehl Considering the fact that your skin is your largest organ, and that it faces a variety of harsh conditions throughout your lifetime, it is important to know where to turn for outstanding dermatology care. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre, located in the Trinity Professional Place plaza at the corner of Trinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. is dedicated to treating skin conditions of all kinds including skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, rashes, wrinkles and more. Patients who come to Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre see Brian T. Johnson, M.D., a Board Certified Dermatologist who has been treating local pa- Brian T. Johnson, M.D. tients since he opened his first practice nearby in 1990. Since that time he has built an impressive reputation for truly listening to his patients, providing exceptional care, and getting incredible results. Dr. Johnson has been seeing patients for more than 22 years at his original office, located on Grand Blvd. in the Richey Medical Center. Four years ago, in addition to his New Port Richey office, he opened Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre in Trinity to be more centrally located to the many surrounding communities, including East Lake, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Tampa. On staff at the new Medical Center of Trinity as well as North Bay Hospital, Dr. Johnson is a trusted dermatologist in the community.

26

Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science degree and his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Iowa, and completed four years of residency before moving to Florida. Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr. Johnson knew he wanted to be a doctor, but he never intended to be a dermatologist. “As a doctor [in residency] you rotate through all of the specialties,” said Dr. Johnson, “I was impressed with the preciseness and expertise that was required of dermatologists. That’s when I knew that was what I wanted to do, and I find it very rewarding.” Together with his two Certified Physician Assistants, Marijana Cejkova and Tonya Terwilliger, Dr. Johnson treats everything from skin cancer to acne and wrinkles. Dr. Johnson says, “We take the time to get to know our patients, and we listen to what their concerns are.” In addition to medical treatments and medications, Jessica Banes-Pyles, a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who is affiliated with Dr. Johnson offers a wide variety of skin care treatments, facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels that will improve the appearance of your skin. Trinity Dermatology & Aesthetic Centre combines Dr. Johnson’s medical expertise with the many fantastic aesthetic treatment options that are available today for patients who want to look and feel better about their skin. Treating Acne to Wrinkles and Everything in Between According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and just like other forms of cancer, it can be life threatening. That is why it is so important to see a qualified dermatologist, like Dr. Johnson, about anything on your body

that doesn’t look right. It’s critically important that people pay attention to changes in their skin, changes in moles, or the appearance of anything that won’t heal. These could be signs of cancer, and these skin changes don’t always appear in places that receive sunlight! Skin cancer can appear anywhere on your body. “Our goal is to treat cancer as simply, easily and cheaply as possible,” says Dr. Johnson. “Prevention is our number one focus, followed by early diagnosis and treatment.” In addition to traditional skin cancer treatments, Dr. Johnson has a new state-of-the-art piece of equipment called the BLU-U. The BLU-U is a quick and affordable way to treat precancerous Actinic Keratoses or AKs as they are more commonly known. AKs are rough, scaly patches on the skin caused by too much exposure to the sun. Dr. Johnson also uses the BLU-U to successfully treat other skin conditions like acne as well. According to Dr. Johnson, 90 percent of teenagers get acne, and there’s truly no reason to suffer with the many topical and oral medical options that are out there. Treatments now are so good that they can often see a patient just once as opposed to asking them to come back again and again. “We give a treatment and we expect that to work.” He adds, “Left untreated, acne is destined to get worse.” People of all ages get acne, and Dr. Johnson can help. Thankfully, with today’s treatment options, getting rid of acne can be simple and painless. People who live with conditions like eczema or psoriasis don’t have to suffer. Dr. Johnson says, “Psoriasis is the second most common skin ailment behind acne.” For example, Dr. Johnson says that there are two new treatments for people who have a thick

psoriasis plaque. The most affordable and most common treatment is to give Intralesional Injections, and if more treatment is necessary there are other options like Immune Modulative medications. While wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, growing old gracefully doesn’t mean that you have to grow old with wrinkles! If you have wrinkles that you are concerned about, Botox and injectible fillers are a great alternative to plastic surgery and they often have dramatic effects. Dr. Johnson says, “These treatments are a lot less aggressive and side effect prone.” These simple, quick and effective procedures are done right on the premises. Trinity Dermatology uses the Cynosure Elite, the most comprehensive laser hair removal system available today. Since it’s designed for all skin types, it is used to treat the broadest range of clients. The Cynosure Elite laser system is optimized for effective treatment of facial and leg veins, as well as benign epidermal pigmented lesions (sun spots) with easy, safe, effective and fast results. Most skin types will improve with a noticeable difference in 3-4 weeks. “We are here to help with anything that has to do with your skin, hair or nails,” says Dr. Johnson. Trinity Aesthetic Centre Services Jessica Banes-Pyles is a Licensed Paramedical Aesthetician who performs a variety of aesthetic services aimed at improving the look and feel of your skin. Treatments are available for both men and women that change the appearance of your skin even after one treatment, and you don’t even have to be a patient of Dr. Johnson’s. “We do facials and deep pore cleansing treatments, as well as a variety of microdermabrasion and chemical peels.”
