The Lucky Dill Offers Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Nightlife! By Julie Kanehl Ahh, the New York state of mind. It revolves around class, history, delicious food, and an exciting nightlife. Well, there is no need to get on a plane to NYC, when all of that can be found right here in Palm Harbor. The Lucky Dill is hopping morning, noon and night with people of all ages who have become regulars over the years. It’s not hard to see why. The Lucky Dill has long been a favorite destination for local residents and visitors alike, and when they outgrew their old location at the corner of Alt. 19 and Alderman Rd., they stepped it up a notch and opened their much larger location on U.S. 19 between Tampa Rd. and Nebraska Rd., raising the bar… literally by adding space, adding a separate entrance for their popular

bakery and by opening their NYC Bar. Owner Kimberly Mitow has been in the restaurant business for many years, so when she and her family moved to Pinellas County in the ‘90s, she opened up the original Lucky Dill, and it became a staple in the community. Families loved to come in for the great, quality food. Families loved their great kids’ menu, their giant sandwiches and their decadent desserts. People met there for business meetings, to hang out with friends, and to have a beer on their patio. The Lucky Dill was so popular that many panicked when they heard that they were closing their doors. There was a collective sigh of relief See “Lucky Dill” on page 50.

Community News Briefs

By Diane Galemmo Gills YMCA Welcomes Back Julio Vega Our local YMCA, the James Gills family branch (located at 8411 Photonics Drive in Trinity) is, once again, being headed by Julio Vega, who has had a 20-year career with the Y. When the brand-new Trinity facility opened in 1998, Vega became its first program director. Actually, his 20-year career with the Y began in Milwaukee in 1992, but with four small children, he decided Trinity would be a better environment in which to raise them. Over the years he has moved among several Suncoast Y's. In 2001, Vega was the executive director of the High Point Branch in Clearwater. In 2006, he came back to Pasco County and served as the branch director of what is now called the SunTrust Senior Wellness Center in New Port Richey. (Formerly called YMCA of the Suncoast, it effectively became the SunTrust Senior Wellness Center on May 31, 2011). He briefly made it back to Trinity before being

4

transferred to Clearwater. Now that he's back at the Gills Center, Vega expects to be staying awhile. He thinks the past few years working in different communities will help him as he serves the Trinity branch in a changing, fast-growing community. It's the Y's policy to never turn away anyone due to an inability to pay. "When someone wants to take advantage of our programs and can't afford them, we provide them with a scholarship." In the first five months of 2012, the Trinity branch has given away $90,000 in scholarships; $30,000 more than any other Suncoast branch. Something new that YMCA's across the country have started is a diabetes-prevention program created jointly by the YMCA of the USA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program is already in place in 40 of the nation's Y's, including 14 centers in Tampa. Vega says, "It's a great program to prevent Type II diabetes," referring to the form of diabetes often associated with obesity. It is endorsed by the Centers for Disease Con-

trol and funded by the Humana insurance group. Vega's plans are to reach out more beyond the grounds of the branch teaming up with the Pasco County park system, as well as schools and churches looking for programming. "It's important for the community to understand that the YMCA is here for everybody," Vega concludes. Starkey Ranch Project Saga Continues Back in 2008, the Pasco County Board of Commissioners approved an innovative expansion project, which the Starkey family was planning to develop with a vision toward the future. Trey and Frank Starkey had hoped construction would begin in 2010. They are still waiting. The construction that was supposed to have begun in 2010 is to go once again before county commissioners; that is expected to occur in Sept. 2012. Discussions during a July 12 meeting with members of the county's Development Review Committee were tabled. The Starkey Brothers' plan was to turn the remainder of their grandfather J.B. Starkey, Sr.'s, original 16,000-acre cattle ranch, purchased in 1937, into a distinct town-and-country community. Trey says, "It (would be) a return to the way development was done before

AUGUST 2012

World War II when the pedestrian was king, or at least the auto was of less concern. Parks, plazas, piazzas [and more] were the norm, surrounded by dense urban development, sidewalks, treelined avenues, mom and pop stores." While some of the family's project ideas remain, it does not completely fit what the Starkeys originally had in mind. Their proposal had included 1,415 multi-family residential units (condos, apartments and townhouses), 2,870 single-family dwelling units and a 100-room hotel. Plans now call for 5,050 housing units, about 750,000sq.-ft. of retail, office and light industrial space and 220 hotel rooms. The family, back in 2008, had also proposed a 30,000-sq.-ft. day care center, a 120bed Adult Care Living Facility (ACLF), and a 16-screen multiplex theatre. Currently, none of these are mentioned as being part of the project. The planned community would be along S.R. 54 considered by the family to be a prime location near Gunn Highway and the Suncoast Parkway, two of Pasco's busiest commuting routes to Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties The land would feature four villages, one with a downtown, a business park, and a suburban area outside the residential villages. County officials say that if the villages proposed for the

Starkey Ranch can adequately serve residents' needs, they could reduce the traffic impact on area roads. Although the project was originally approved as a Development of Regional Impact (DRI) in 2008, the developers want to scale it down to a Master Planned Unit Development. That would allow the developers to avoid review by the State Department of Community Affairs and deal with Pasco County officials instead. Starkey Land Company LLC and the county are in the midst of talks about whether the villages would be built on 40 or 80 acres. It was originally planned to include both an elementary and a middle school coordinated with a district park. But that may not be possible; 80 acres would make it easier to accommodate an elementary school and a district park. A middle school no longer appears to be in the equation; and building the villages on 40 acres means the park may not even materialize. County administrator John Gallagher thinks part of the solution is to create small, economically viable buildings. Then there's the issue of increased traffic expected to come with so many new houses and businesses. Most of the traffic the project is expected to generate can be accommo-

dated without building additional roads, according to Carol Clarke, executive planner with the county's Growth and Management Department. Because the villages are expected to include a mix of retail establishments, restaurants and other buildings, many people won't have to wander outside Starkey Ranch to work or play, say officials. Leapfrog Gives Top Grade to Two West Pasco Hospitals Six Tampa Bay area hospitals received an ‘A’ rating from the Leapfrog Group. Two hospitals are in West Pasco. They are: Medical Center of Trinity and Regional Medical Center at Bayonet Point. The rating was determined by a recently released survey by the Leapfrog Group. Leapfrog Group is a non-profit group that monitors safety, quality and affordability of health care at America's Hospitals. They are working to make reporting health care quality and safety a routine feature of the U.S. health care system. According to Leapfrog, about 400 people die per day because of hospital errors. Leapfrog provides information on health care-quality so that one can compare hospitals, much like Consumer Reports. Leapfrog works under the guidance of a nine-member Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel,

made up of patient safety experts from across the country, to select measures and develop a scoring methodology. Hospitals receive an A, B, C, D or F safety score calculated using publicly available data in 26 categories. (For more information on Leapfrog's methodology, go to www.leapfroggroup.org.) "Leapfrog Group's goal is to give patients the vital information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital," says Leah Binder, Leapfrog's president and CEO. Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, in the Hudson area, scored high in all of the areas of "safe practice measures," getting perfect scores in surgical areas including: patients receiving antibiotics within one hour of surgical incision; patients receiving the correct antibiotic; antibiotic discontinued after 24 hours; and urinary catheter removal on post-operative day. The hospital got near-perfect scores in several categories, including leadership structures and systems; culture measurement feedback and intervention; teamwork, training and skill building; identification and mitigation of risks and hazards; nursing work force; medication reconciliation; hand hygiene; and care of ventilated patients. Medical Center of Trinity, which like Regional Medical Center Bayonet

Point is owned by HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) scored well enough to earn an 'A' rating over the past year, including its final months as Community Hospital of New Port Richey. (It was renamed Medical Center of Trinity and moved to Trinity on Feb. 7, 2012.) "This ('A') recognition is particularly important to us as we enter a new era of service," says Medical Center of Trinity CEO Leigh Massengill. “It is a recognition of our entire staff's effort to ensure our patients, physicians and community of the safest hospital experience possible.” Medical Center of Trinity scored well in surgical areas, including those pertaining to administration of antibiotics, treatments to prevent blood clots and timely catheter removal. The hospital received perfect or near-perfect scores in areas of hospital-acquired condition measures, including: foreign object returned after surgery, air embolism; pressure ulcer; and falls and trauma. To see the full report, go to www.hospitalsafetyscore.org. Note that, for purposes of viewing the full score, Medical Center of Trinity still appears as Community Hospital, New Port Richey. Shear Elegance Salon Welcomes Two New Stylists By Dara Tucker When you see customers leaving a salon with beaming smiles, running fingers through their shining hair with their head held high, you know there’s magic going on behind the front door. Shear Elegance Salon of Trinity, located on Little Road, pampers their guests immediately upon arrival, with a genuine, friendly greeting by Jillian Bruckner, who has become known as the Ambassador of Elegance. Jillian makes sure your time at Shear Elegance is spent in comfort, from providing refreshments from their café as you arrive, to booking your next appointment as you leave. Shear Elegance’s mission is to make clients feel like they are on vacation while their style team transforms the rigors of daily life into cover model hair, silky hands and feet, elegant nails and a relaxed, rejuvenated body. It’s all about you – your comfort, your style, your Elegance. Alison Morin, president and owner of Shear Elegance, started working in the Cosmetology field 15

years ago. Alison studied at the International School of Beauty. While studying she was recognized as Student of the Alison Morin Year and won President & Owner third place in a styling competition in the nationally renowned Orlando Premier Hair Show. Her natural talent coupled with her successful training lead Alison to a hairstylist position at Eclips Salon at the famous Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club in St. Petersburg, Florida. Alison honed her skills as she catered to some of St. Petersburg’s prestigious residents and celebrity guests and members of Vinoy’s Golf and Yacht Clubs. For the past three years Alison has brought all of her knowledge, and elegance from her experience at the Vinoy, to us here in Trinity. Many of Alison’s customers, such

as Sandy Carney, make the commute up to Trinity from St. Petersburg, because they can’t imagine anyone else working on their hair. When Sandy moved to St. Petersburg 14 years ago she had a coupon for the salon at the Vinoy. Alison was her stylist, and has been ever since. Sandy says, “It takes an hour to get here, but it’s worth the drive. I get the best color from Alison. Even when I had a serious health issue Alison came to me to do my hair. She did it so I could feel better, and it made such a difference. She’s hard to duplicate. People stop and compliment me about my hair, and I always refer them here.” Along with Alison, Luann Burchick, who has over 30 years of experience in the cosmetology industry, and Anne Paquet, who specializes in hair design and color, has built a growing clientele over the years. This is very understandable given Shear Elegance is the type of place you just enjoy being at, and the employees are women you catch an infectious smile from. Loyal customers who spread

Trinity Mother and Daughter Invent CapTwist It all started when Trinity business owner Linda Appleby and her 30-yearold daughter, Emma Faasse, were having trouble opening a water bottle at a family gathering. The water bottle industry's environmentally friendly water bottle designs were putting a strain on people's fingers. Mom and daughter are pro-environment but both agreed that they needed to come up with a solution for opening these new bottles. If they were having trouble, then it seemed obvious others were too, especially those with disabilities. After first joking that “someone” needed to invent a solution to this problem, that "someone" turned out to be Linda and Emma. Despite never having invented anything before, the mother and daughter team decided to take on the challenge. After numerous design ideas, they were able to turn what was a simple idea into the final CapTwist design, which is a handy device that helps in the opening of water bottles. CapTwist is a simple rubber device that can be placed over the top of a bottle and allow users to twist off caps using gentle pressure. The ladies

drafted the device in the form of a brightly colored, lightweight keychain. During testing they found out that it not only opened water bottles, it also opened soda bottles, twist-off beer bottles, sauce bottles, and more. And it's small enough to keep in your purse or attached to your cooler. Faasse, an architectural consultant, and her mom, Linda Appleby, a former newspaper advertising sales rep, say, "Hard-to-open bottles seem to be a growing problem as companies downsize bottle caps in their efforts to reduce their use of plastic." Patenting was among the challenges the two women faced while turning their idea into a reality. They kept their idea "bottled up" during the process. Faasse says, "You just have to guard it and hope that no one else has the same idea. More than 100 of the devices – priced at 2 for $5 and 5 for $10 – have sold so far. They come in either pink or blue. While the product is sold primarily on their website, CapTwist.com, Appleby envisions that one day it will be on store shelves. Appleby said the product has already proved useful to customers with arthritis and muscular dystrophy. A 94-year-old-arthritic woman pictured on their the CapTwist web site (via youtube) was attempting to use a nutcracker to open a water bottle. "And it's not easy," she said. So

Some advice given by Appleby to those with an innovative idea: "I would definitely say that if you have an idea, don't just dismiss it. Do something with it." All Smiles Tampa Bay Makes Your Smile Their Priority By Julie Kanehl All Smiles Tampa Bay is a dental practice that makes the health of your smile their first priority. With a focus on restoring and enhancing your natural smile, this husband and wife dental team has designed their practice from the inside out, putting their hearts into creating a practice that is wholly patient-focused. Convenient to Trinity, Tampa, Lutz, Odessa and Lakeland, All Smiles Tampa Bay is located just west of the Suncoast Parkway in the Suncoast Meadows Professional Park. Joe Grimaudo, DMD, and Melissa Grimaudo, DMD, known to their patients as “Dr. Joe” and “Dr. Melissa,” met each other in dental school at the University of Florida, and are both from the Tampa Bay Area. Dr. Joe officially opened All Smiles Tampa Bay in March of 2011, and he built it around the principal of providing the best care possible, using the latest technology and the best possible materials. Dr. Joe’s father also was a dentist, and he was impressed by

the difference that his father made in the lives of others. Dr. Melissa worked part-time at the practice when it opened, while working at another dental office in the Trinity area. By October of 2011, the good word was spreading about the easygoing nature and exceptional care given by Dr. Joe, and in October of 2011, Dr. Melissa was added to All Smiles Tampa Bay full-time. Dr. Melissa says, “We are on the same wavelength as far as patient care, and we communicate a lot more which is nice for our patients.” She elaborates on how much she and Dr. Joe enjoy working and living in the area, saying, “We love being a part of the community. We live in the neighborhood, go to St. Peter the Apostle, and I see my patients at Target and at Publix. I am the incoming President for the West Pasco Dental Association for the 2012-2013 year. I have been on the Executive Board for four years now. Organized dentistry is really important to my

Melissa Grimaudo, DMD husband and myself. We have been active in our local association as well as the district (West Coast District Dental Association) and state level (Florida Dental Association). These are organizations with ethical and moral standards, with a focus on continuing education and they lobby for the dental health of the citizens of Florida.” In addition to being involved in the community through dentistry, Dr. Joe and Dr. Melissa also take part in

Joe Grimaudo, DMD community events like the Dancing With Our Stars event that features local members of our community and dance professionals who will team up dance for a chance to raise money to benefit the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce and the arts within Pasco County. For a chance to see your favorite dentists dance, the Dancing With Our Stars event takes place on October 20th, 2012, and you can get more information on the community

All Smiles Tampa Bay provides hightech dental technology and comfort events and the things taking place at All Smiles Tampa Bay by liking their Facebook page or going to their newly renovated website. “We like to have fun and be a part of the community,” says Dr. Melissa. This family-based, communitycentered outlook has been a success for All Smiles Tampa Bay, and they are even expanding within their office to allow for more patients to be seen by adding new equipment and adding more operatories. Flexible, Patient-Centered Care All Smiles Tampa Bay offers a number of treatments and services including regular checkups, cleanings, bondings and white fillings (no more silver in your mouth!), inlays and onlays, crowns, root canals, bridges, tooth extractions, dental implant restorations, dentures and partial dentals, veneers, complete smile makeovers and more. Treating patients between 3 and 103, the doctors and their staff are committed to making their patients comfortable.

Dr. Melissa says, “We only provide white filings to our patients because that’s the only kind that we would want in our own mouths, so that’s what we provide for our patients.” One patient recently wrote a review about All Smiles Tampa Bay and said, "Dr. G and the whole staff at All Smiles Tampa Bay are wonderful. From the time you arrive to the time you leave, everyone is so friendly, and doing everything they can to make sure you are comfortable. Dr. G was amazing. He did the work that needed to be done without pushing services on you that you did not need. I have definitely found my dentist. This is where me and my whole family will be going from now on. Thanks to Dr. G and the whole staff at All Smiles Tampa Bay." When patients come into All Smiles Tampa Bay, they are greeted by one of their friendly staff members, one of whom is Jeanne, Dr. Joe’s Mom. Their calm and peaceful waiting room sets the tone for the appointment, and when invited back to the treatment rooms, patients are invited to recline in one of their comfortable exam chairs where they can watch TV on a screen specially designed for dental patients while they receive treatment. If you count yourself among the many who are nervous about going to the dentist, you should try coming to All Smiles Tampa Bay. While they offer nitrous oxide for apprehensive patients, most people find that they are so impressed with the time that they spend and the gentle nature of the dentist and dental staff, that they do not need anything else to help them relax. Many patients worry about being forced into expensive treatments and avoid going to the dentist because of

it. However, Dr. Joe and Dr. Melissa like to educate their patients first and give them all of the options available for care before moving forward. Using their state-of-the-art intra-oral cameras and those same TV screens, patients are given the chance to see exactly what the dentist sees, and look at all of their options. Dr. Melissa says, “I say it all the time: They’re your teeth! I’ll show you and I’ll inform you, but you ultimately make the decisions.” Patients are relieved at the Grimaudo’s no-pressure approach. One patient recently wrote, “Very friendly staff and no pressure to choose one way or the other meant a lot to me. All options were explained thoroughly. I was treated with respect and kindness.” Completely dedicated to staying on top of their field, both doctors continue their education by traveling in search of the latest new techniques, treatments and technologies to bring home to their patients. Teeth Whitening for Life! Dr. Joe and Dr. Melissa are very proud to offer a number of unique programs to their patients, including their Whitening for Life program. For patients who keep their regularly scheduled appointments, they provide free teeth whitening which includes free custom trays and touch-up gel to patients who wish to participate. This is a great perk and saves patients a lot of money! Don’t let anything keep you from

having a healthy and beautiful smile. All Smiles Tampa Bay accepts most PPO insurances, and also offers a “Patient Loyalty Program” for patients who do not have dental insurance. This is not a payment plan, but a unique program that has advantages including no deductibles, no claim forms, no hidden charges, no limits on or charges for office visits, no waiting period, no charges for comprehensive exams or periodic exams, no waiting period and no limit on pre-existing conditions. It’s actually pretty amazing. As a member of the Patient Loyalty Program, members only pay a fraction of the standard prices for services from exams and x-rays to fillings and dentures. M. Howells recently wrote, “We had a wonderful visit! From the first time I called to make my appointment, to arriving and checking in, to our professional, very personable and nice hygienist to our visit with Dr. Grimaudo...everyone was very kind, helpful and informative. The front office lady was extremely nice and helpful as well!" All Smiles Tampa Bay is located in the Suncoast Professional Park at 17200 Camelot Court in Land O’ Lakes. Office hours are Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and by appointment only on Sat. For additional information or to make an appointment, please call (813) 345-8580 or visit the updated website at www.AllSmilesTampaBay.com.

Aladdin Music Instruction Brings the Lessons to You By Amy Paterson With summer coming to an end, many people are preparing their kids for a new school year. It is also a time when parents start thinking about after-school programs for their children to participate in. If you or your child is interested in learning a musical instrument, such as piano/keyboard, acoustic or electric guitar, voice and more, let Aladdin Music Instruction help you on your journey. Aladdin Music Instruction, Inc. is a network of music instructors span-

ning throughout the tri-county area of Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas that offers in-home music lessons. Owners Colin and Christel Fewkes established Aladdin Music in 1993 in Pinellas County. In time, their business grew to reach Hillsborough and Pasco counties. Colin and Christel decided it would be advantageous for their family, as well as the students and their families, to offer music lessons conveniently taught in the home. Aladdin Music enrolls students from age five to senior adults. Colin and Christel make sure to enlist qualified and knowledge-

able teachers throughout the tricounty area for the Aladdin Music network of instructors. Their interview process is thorough and specific, which ensures that they are providing their students with only the best. Colin is originally from England, where he grew up with a love for music. He has been playing the piano since he was six years old, and eventually studied with the London College of Music, where he was classically trained. After college Colin was a professional musician for 20 years, performing worldwide. Traveling and music became his way of life until he met his wife Christel, and together they created Aladdin Music Instruction. Christel is a graduate from Florida State University, and had been teaching in Florida’s public school system until she and Colin began Aladdin Music Instruction, Inc. in 1993. She is involved in the office management aspect of the business along with Colin but still finds time to run an academic tutoring business as well. Some benefits of in home lessons are: students feel more comfortable because they are in their own home, parents can enjoy the security of having their child taught at home, music materials can be brought directly to the student and lessons are scheduled around your needs without incurring travel or waiting time. One mom says, “Aladdin Music worked very hard to match the perfect teacher to each of my children. The instructors are always punctual, and always easy to work with. My children’s music related abilities constantly grew and expanded. Music is a huge part of both of my children’s lives every day.

Playing in front of a live audience is rewarded by applause and a sense of accomplishment for the student. The recitals are also a lot of fun for the students. Each one of them has a goal to work hard on their solos or duets, and gather together to support one another during their performances. Colin and Christel reward all of their recital participants with ribbons or certificates and their famous “goodie bags.”

Aladdin Music Instruction will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2013, and they are happy to say that it has been a great 20 years! I would recommend Aladdin Music to anyone who wants to become the best they can be as a musician while still enjoying it.” Colin says, “Aladdin students receive a well rounded lesson that includes technique, reading music, theory, and aural training. Brain Balance Achievement Centers Where Every Kid Connects With Success By: Kristy Needham, proud mother of Zeke. Back story: My son Zeke is ten years old and is one of the joys of my life. He is a hard worker with an amazingly good attitude. Zeke is compassionate, kind and sincerely wants to please by helping and doing the right thing. He is kind to everyone he meets and smiles all the time. At three, he started speech and occupational therapy, which was recommended by his pediatrician and his preschool, and he tested within the normal limits of both. At five, he started to read, so instead of another year of preschool, we wanted him to be challenged and had him attend Kindergarten – he excelled! At six, his first grade teacher (with 15 years of experience) suspected he was not producing work commensurate with the amount of effort he provided, stating, “He’s doing fine, but there is something there. He is so smart and he works so hard, but there is something

30

there that we are missing and I can’t figure out what it is.” At seven, his second grade teacher, who has never met or communicated with his previous teacher, shared the same sentiment. She stated, “On a scale from 1-10 he is as smart as a 10 and works as hard as a 10, but he produces work at a five. I don’t know why, but he is working harder than he should have to and is not producing the work that he is capable of mentally.” I saw it. Homework was taking him a really long time and spelling words became brutal for him. He wasn’t distracted and he wasn’t lazy. Zeke was working hard, yet not getting a lot done. In all of his written work, letters were backwards. I would point out to him a backwards letter and he would erase it and write it the exact same way. He understood the concepts and got the ideas, but he just couldn’t get through his homework. Even at home he was a hard worker, yet he would frequently forget instructions and have to check a chart several times a day for sequences in a daily routine. At eight, he was still struggling

and was intimidated by kids his own age. His outgoing, jovial personality was changing and he became timid and withdrawn. His confidence plummeted. Homework that should’ve taken Zeke 15 minutes took him 1-1 ½ hours. His perception of himself, other kids and school changed and he started to have negative thoughts and talk derogatively about himself. It was not going in a good direction and everything was happening so quickly. After a lot of paperwork, a lot of meetings and several observations from two different school counselors, one counselor recommended that we tape a note to the top of his desk that said, “Stay focused on your task until it is finished.” I wanted to scream – this addresses minor symptoms, not the problem or the root cause of the problem. All of his teachers now see there is “something there” but they don’t know what it is. After testing Zeke’s vision, he started wearing glasses to school and started vision therapy sessions for an hour, twice a week for 6 months. In addition, Zeke worked half an hour to an

AUGUST 2012

hour of homework for vision therapy each day – there was no real success. Next, he was diagnosed ADHD inattentive. Upon pediatrician recommendation, Zeke tried three different medications with no real success - just varying side effects. He was proclaimed to have, “dyslexic tendencies” and “showing evidence of Audio Processing Disorder.” There was no plan to help him; no action items. There was nothing we could do. I know he is working incredibly hard and has a positive attitude I wish I had when dealing with difficulty.

My First Experience with Brain Balance With a chip on my shoulder and a bad attitude, I attended a Brain Balance seminar with examples of Zeke’s work in hand. One paragraph of writing that took him an hour to write included backwards letters in every word and one word spelled four different ways. The information that was presented sounded interesting, but at this time there had been five different solutions in the form of diagnoses and therapy

staff at Brain Balance counseled and encouraged me during times of frustration and fear. Every day we were there for the appointments, someone would come out to the waiting room and talk with our family. On more than one occasion, the director pulled me into the office to talk privately about my concerns. I appreciate the time, effort and caring everyone on staff at Brain Balance showed to our family. It is obvious this is an office wanting to help kids and their families succeed – in more ways than academically. They celebrated each success with us and encouraged and challenged Zeke.

Our Results Zeke is no longer on the ADHD scale. He no longer has letter reversals in his writing and no longer shows any evidence of Dyslexia. Zeke no longer shows any evidence of Audio Processing Disorder – I didn’t know this was even a possible outcome. This program has changed Zeke’s life, the life of our family and the dynamic between Zeke and his brothers. I no longer worry or have anxiety over Zeke’s academic life. We started the program just before he started 3rd grade (again) in fall 2011. Zeke was a good reader, but preferred books lower than his level of reading – 2nd grade level books. He ended the year with a book report on his favorite

book – an 8th grade level book. He started off the year really struggling with writing. His first writing earned a 1 from the school district writing assignment. One is considered first grade level. His final writing of the year was a 4 – fourth grade level. I talked with his teacher frequently to see how he was doing in the class socially and emotionally. What do other kids think of him? What does he think of himself? He is well liked in class and is considered one of the “smart kids.” He often finishes assignments first. His grades in math and science are consistently in the top of the class. His entire academic life and outlook have changed in one year. In the beginning of the year, Zeke was a scared, defeated boy; afraid he was stupid. I could see it even in his school pictures and how he related to other kids. Now, he is a happy, confident kid who loves school. He is so proud of his grades and the work he does. I love that he smiles all the time again. Brain Balance is located at 4022 Tampa Road, Suite 6 in Oldsmar. Hours are Mon., Wed. and Fri. 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Tues. and Thurs. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. They are closed Sat. and Sun. Meeting The Growing Need For Surveillance By Amy Paterson GPS tracking devices, digital-video recording devices, surveillance cameras and personal protection items are necessary for a multitude of reasons. Whether one is trying to catch a thief, protect their property and their loved ones, or even make sure the babysitter or caretaker is doing their job well, Birds Eye Spy shop on Old County Road 54 in New Port Richey has everything for your spying needs. Brothers Jimmy and Peter Bitzas are the owners of Birds Eye Spy. Jimmy first came up with the idea of a GPS tracking device in 2006 to keep track of his aunt who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. She kept getting away from

34

home and couldn’t find her way back so Jimmy – with a background in electrical engineering – devised a tracking device as a way for the family to find her. With their aunt’s safety being monitored more closely, Jimmy and his family were finally able to have peace of mind. After seeing how successful the tracker was for them, Jimmy partnered up with his brother Peter to develop the software and hardware needed to start producing items for wholesale. In 2007, Birds Eye Spy was founded and has been growing globally ever since. There are 28 distributors nationwide that are selling Birds Eye Spy’s products today. And the spy company’s products are sold worldwide as well, reaching over 120 countries.

coming through the doors because of excellent care. That is what has happened with Florida Wellness & Rehab in Trinity. In February 2012, Dr. Unger and Dr. Delle Chiaie moved to a new wellness center with more than 5,000-sq.-ft. where Florida Wellness & Rehab patients will enjoy access to even more services. Now, in addition to chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and non-surgical spinal decompression, patients can also turn to Dr. Browne, who brings with her 24 years of experience as a full service, family practice care provider. She is accepting new patients of all ages at Florida Wellness & Rehab and is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Meet Dr. Carol Browne “I am really excited to be here,” says Dr. Browne. “Throughout my entire career my philosophy has been to treat people how I want my family treated.” Dr. Browne says that it is wonderful to be working with like-minded colleagues. “A big reason that I came onboard is the

BIG focus on wellness. I feel like I am getting back to the love of medicine – focusing on the health of my patients. One of Dr. Browne’s favorite quotes is from Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., who is considered the founder of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Still’s wise adage, “Any doctor can find disease. It takes a physician to find health.” Dr. Browne received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1986 at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas. She has extensive experience in teaching osteopathic manipulation and family practice to medical students and residents, and has presented many formal lectures at physician meetings. She was on faculty at the University of North Texas Health Science Center/ Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). She was a member of both the Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Departments. She archived the rank of Associate Pro-

vides physicals, well-woman and well-man exams. Additionally, Dr. Browne is trained and experienced in trigger point injections, joint injections, bio-identical hormone replacement, Armour thyroid treatment and other modalities including cranial sacral therapy. When I met Dr. Browne and learned that she was experienced in cranial sacral therapy, I immediately made an appointment for my mother. She had experienced relief from severe headaches and an overall feeling of wellbeing with this type of therapy before, but the closest licensed therapist trained in this treatment was a far drive from our area. Dr. Browne was very thorough in her examination, and she has that special something that is very necessary to help someone with a treatment such as cranial sacral therapy – good hands. This type of therapy is focused on maximizing the flow of cerebral spinal fluid up and down the spinal column and into the brain. After witnessing the benefits my mother has experienced, I have come to strongly believe in the benefits of cranial sacral therapy. Working with all ages of patients in Missouri gave Dr. Browne the opportunity to help with a variety of

medical needs, from those of aging patients to the littlest newborns. The Missouri Department of Health referred several newborns who were unable to nurse to Dr. Browne for cranial sacral therapy; after working ever so gently on the babies, she was successful in helping them to properly breastfeed. As an Osteopathic Physician, Dr. Browne has extra training in the musculoskeletal system and how it works. “My goal is to restore patients to normal function as much as possible,” shares Dr. Browne. “I strive to help the anatomy to be as normal as possible so the physiology is as functional as possible. We improve circulation and lymphatic flow, which helps the immune system work better. My job as a physician is to give each patient all of the tools they need to stay healthy and strong.”

“Lucky Dill” Continued from page 1 and a feeling of excitement, that has not shown any signs of slowing down, when The Lucky Dill opened up again on U.S. 19 less than a year ago. Their new location is 2 1/2 times the size of their original restaurant, and serves 2,500 happy customers a day. The Lucky Dill is as busy a place as you would expect for a NYC restaurant; in fact, they have recently arranged for their employees to park on another lot, opening up 40 more parking spots to accommodate customers. Now people can easily access “The Dill” whether they are coming in to pick up a deli sandwich or baked goods from the mouth-watering Brooklyn Bakery, swinging in for lunch or dinner, or even dancing to live music at their popular Ladies Night (which is on Thursdays!). As a guest at The Lucky Dill, you will be seated in one of New York’s famous boroughs. Behind the busy Brooklyn Bakery is my family’s favorite, the Bronx, where it feels like you could be dining just a block from Yankee Stadium. The newest addition to the restaurant is the Tribeca

Lounge, which like the borough it is named for, is both lively, classy and 100% New York. The Tribeca Lounge seats up to 60 people and can be rented out for private parties, business events, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties or even small weddings. Regardless of what part of town you are seated in, what makes a restaurant a true success is the food, and if you’re hungry, you will find something on the menu to please even the pickiest eater. Want breakfast all day? No problem. Feel like having a sandwich the size of a skyscraper? Ga’ Head. Need something to bring over to Ma’s? Order to go. Any chance of leaving hungry? Fuggetaboutit! Regular Lindsay Ramey says, “The Deli Luxe is my favorite sandwich and the West Side Story omelet is delish. The bakery is totally sinful, too.” How YOU Doin? The lucky Dill opens at 7 a.m. every morning, and while there is a Breakfast All Day section on their lunch and dinner menu, their fullfledged, real-deal breakfast menu is not to be missed.
