Tampa Bay Local Beads to Raise Money and Awareness for Charity Rather than throw them in the trash, Tampa Bay local Kathi Stoy has found a way to turn annoying directmail political campaign ads into a way to provide food to the homeless. Her creative “NO B.S. Political Beads” are helping to spread awareness and raise money for an important Tampa Bay charity. Stoy is recycling direct mail political ads to make NO B.S. Political Beads; a line of jewelry made from political campaign flyers. One hundred percent of the money raised from the sale of these necklaces, bracelets and earrings will go to Trinity Café, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, non-denominational Tampa charity that serves meals to the poor and homeless. “If You Can’t Beat ‘em…Bead ‘em!” “Too much money is being spent promoting politicians and not enough money is going towards fixing real problems. I want a little of the money wasted on these flyers to help people in need,” says Stoy. Pam Sica, also a Tampa Bay resident, agrees, “I purchased a necklace because I too am sick of these flyers cluttering my mailbox. Too much talk and not enough action.” NO B.S. Political Beads are currently available at the Sound Exchange locations in Tampa (813-978-9316) and Pinellas Park (727-545-0042). Prices are: Earrings ($5), Bracelets ($5) and Necklace ($8); 100% of the money raised will go to Trinity Café. Other local businesses and individuals are encouraged to “Jump on the Beadwagon!” About Trinity Café Trinity Café has been a beacon of hope and compassion in the Tampa Bay community since 2001. Housed at

the Salvation Army on Florida Avenue in Tampa, it serves over 200 hot, nutritious meals each and every weekday, including holidays. Anyone is welcome – without question or qualification. Since Trinity Café first began, it has served more than 789,000 free restaurantquality meals to the homeless, poor and anyone wishing to receive a meal. The meals are prepared by a professional chef and served by volunteer waiters. The guests sit at cloth-covered tables set with china dishes and silverware. They are asked for nothing in return - no mandatory religious services or counseling or work. While Trinity Café recognizes the vital importance of providing nourishment to those who are hungry, much more is needed. Together with the solidarity and commitment of its staff and volunteers, Trinity Cafe strives to be a gateway to positive change in the lives of the people it serves and seeks to enlarge its guests’ capacity for self-help and reconnect them to the broader community. Through commitment to combating hunger and homelessness, the organization provides the support and respect guests need to encourage them to become self-sufficient and regain hope for the future. Trinity Café is a place of love, compassion, and dignity… a true lifeline to those in need. Executive Chef Alfred Astl prepares more than 200 meals each day, Monday-Friday, 52 weeks a year. Trinity Café’s mission is to restore a sense of dignity to its hungry and homeless neighbors by serving a nutritious meal

Adjust. Balance. Thrive. By Jeff Berlinicke Not too long ago, Jason Hurley, F.I.A.M.A., was 14-years-old and suffered from back pain. As a young football player, he was doing a lot of weightlifting and training, which consequently took a huge toll on his back and his body. Dr. Hurley started going to a chiropractor, hoping it would change his condition for the better – it ended up changing his life. “It worked,” says Dr. Hurley,

6

who recently opened Motion Council, a chiropractic business in Oldsmar. “I have always had an unusual amount of back pain and once I started going to the chiropractor, it seemed to work.” Dr. Hurley didn’t immediately decide to make it a profession. After playing football at Furman University in South Carolina, Dr. Hurley went into the business world, wearing a tie every day and knowing that it wasn’t the life for him. He remained fascinated by the chiropractic practice and decided it would be a better

route for his professional and personal life. He even studied for a time in Honduras and learned that not all countries practice health the same way and that Americans are among the least healthy in the world. It was that approach that lead him to become an ardent advocate of health and to show people that chiropractic is not all about the back – it is about the mind and the nervous system and the things that lead to back pains. At Motion Council, Dr. Jason Hurley and his team of wellness experts put their patients’ bodies in constant motion by providing the ultimate chiropractic care, nutrition, exercise and massage therapies available. Patients who have chronic health conditions that cause them pain, steal their energy or lower their quality of life get back in the swingof-things with the finest quality of care through the use of modern chiropractic treatment and equipment. “Look at it this way,” says Dr. Hurley. “We are the wealthiest country in the world with the best health insurance, yet the rankings say we are the 33rd healthiest country in the world. Why is that? Because we encourage unhealthy eating, we ignore stress, and we don’t take advantage

Dr. Jason Hurley operates a chiropractic practice, Motion Council, in Oldsmar. He works on much more than back pains, including nutrition, stress relief and other influences that may cause back pain. of good nutrition. It’s out there, but too many people want to settle for fast food.” Dr. Hurley deals with people of all ages and has often given help to babies. He has previously worked with the Labor of Love Birth Center in Lutz and continues today to work with babies before their muscles are even fully developed. “Much of back pain,” Dr. Hurley says, “is mental in origin, or at least brought on by things besides actual back injuries. The spinal cord

controls everything in the body and the brain sends messages to the rest of the body through this cord. The key is the nervous system, and that is affected by your stress level, your nutrition, and many other factors. You would be surprised at how much of a difference getting toxins out of your body can help your back.” The nervous system is hard to define, yet it dictates much of what happens in the body. Dr. Hurley says, “It is the part of the means by which

back pain can develop.” Stress isn’t the only factor when it comes to back pain, but it is something most people do not think about when it comes to back problems. By the time a person reaches the age of 40, the stress factors have built up and underlying disease process have manifested themselves to a point where now the body begins to show signs of dysfunction – what we refer to as symptoms. Seeing a chiropractor can pro-

duce great results and Dr. Hurley, along with his highly-trained professional staff at Motion Council do a lot more than just adjust the back. They also offer massage therapy – a great way to sooth those nerves that might be causing the problems in the first place – acupuncture, Pilates, Yoga, nutritional counseling, physical therapy, spinal decompression, kinesio taping, the Graston Soft Tissue Technique and rehabilitation therapy. “I don’t want to call myself a jack of all trades,” says Dr. Hurley. “I can give my patients some of the best basic advice, but every person has to be able to want to make themselves better. It’s all up to you in your mind. You also have to know how to work out. Put it this way – do you want to be able to play with your grandchildren or do you want to have a hard time standing up? That’s the main thing people need to think about.” Another myth about chiropractic, Dr. Hurley says, is that it relieves pain. Dr. Hurley believes the idea behind chiropractic is to balance the body, allowing injuries and ailments to heal themselves. Chiropractic simply helps the healing process along. There are 24 movable vertebrae in the human spine with discs in be-

tween. Keeping them all in motion is what allows the nervous system and the rest of the body to work at its fullest potential. “The back muscles and the body’s organs can usually heal themselves just fine,” states Hurley. “Other things can be fixed, but the back is the strongest part of your body. Stress, along with eating the wrong foods and taking in toxins leads to back issues. Stress reaps havoc on the body. Chiropractors do a lot more than just fix back problems.” “Thank you Dr. Hurley for taking the pain away and literally giving me my life back,” says happy client Ricky. “After only a few visits I started feeling better and my back has become stronger and pain free. I should have seen you a long time ago.” Motion Council is located at 3687 Tampa Road, Suite 202 in Oldsmar. Hours are Mon., Wed., and Fri. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sat. by appointment only. Belanova Salon is Considered a Highlight in the Westchase Community

By Lenay Ruhl Sitting comfortably in the waiting area of Belanova Salon, owner Elena Filoqi happily reflects; proud of opening her own salon. “It is a dream come true, really,” says Elena. However, Elena doesn’t take all the credit for the success of her salon, recognizing that her dream couldn’t exist without her adored clientele. Belanova Salon, located at 9660 W Linebaugh Ave. in The Avenues at Westchase, opened on August 5, 2009 and has been growing ever since. “It was an opportunity,” states Elena. “This plaza went slow about three years ago, so it was a great time to come in.” Upon opening, Elena found that word of mouth was the best way to promote her new salon, and that is why her clients hold such importance to her. She thanks all of them and really appreciates how great they have been to the salon and how they have helped spread the word out for her. At Belanova Salon, they boast of their European roots. Elena, who moved to the United States nine years ago from Greece, studied hair in Greece and retook the courses when she came to America, thus helping her learn many new talents. Elena has been doing hair for over twelve years, and brings with her many years of hands on experience and unique cutting-edge techniques. Aside from Elena, Belanova Salon houses hair stylists Jose Tamayo, Francisco Perez, Monika Plonski and Brandy Bledsoe, make-up artists and hair stylists Joseph Blake and Elizabeth Perez, front desk manager Petra Catanzaro, receptionist Jordan Ferry and assistant Marta Vargas. Together, this team of highly-skilled professionals will help you define your personal style and give you

Elena Filoqi, owner the signature edgy look that will leave you beautiful, refreshed and revitalized. “We are team workers, loving people and just great hair stylists; not just one, not just two, but all of us,” says Elena. Belanova Salon is more than your average hair salon – they offer cuts, trims, special occasion up-dos, full color, highlights, texturizing, extensions and waxing services and are open seven days a week. The fact that they have their very own make-up artists on staff is just another thing that sets Belanova Salon apart. “Belanova Salon in Westchase has an extraordinary hair and make-up stylist in Joseph Blake, an exceptionally skilled professional who is a rare gem in the Westchase community,” says client Janelle Van. “Joe is a brilliant colorist who always makes my hair look beautiful, and for my daughters, senior prom and homecoming events wouldn’t be the same without him. Joe is a local treat not to be missed!” It’s not just about their style, services and personality, but also about the quality of their product. When selecting product brands, Elena exclaims, “We have to love them.” Before a product is used in her salon Elena tests out the product, which has to be proven effective on many different types of hair. This ensures that you, as a client, will only receive the best, highest rated salon products on the market. At Belanova Salon they always have a few selections of brands to choose from, giving

everybody an option. Looking towards the future, Elena hopes to soon become a Kerastase Salon. One client praises her experienced stylist – “Brandy Bledsoe

The natural, Florida sunlight shines in through the windows, reflecting off of the chandeliers. Client Sue Anne Mckaughan appreciates the ambiance. “I’ve been a client of Jose’s for

over nine years, and I am pleased with Jose’s service,” says Sue Anne. “The salon is relaxing and open, and everybody is friendly.” Elena is very proud of her salon. “I think the reputation that we have built here is one of the top salons in Tampa, or even Florida,” she states. Although it was a challenge for her to learn

the business side of owning her own salon, she says, “It has some hard times, but again, it’s a great experience.” Elena doesn’t want to give the likely reason for being a stylist – “Well everybody says, ‘making them beautiful’. Yes, that’s a big part. It’s more about doing what you love and having great clients like I do.” Elena takes special interest in giving back to the communities she serves and loves contributing to charities every chance she gets. “The salon has done a lot with schools and health,” said Elena. Working as a team, the stylists often share their clients; clients love this because they don’t have to worry since all of the stylists are really good. Due to their exceptional service, stylists at Belanova Salon pull clients from all across the Tampa Bay Area, including Tarpon Springs, Clearwater, New Tampa,

Orlando, Spring Hill and Sarasota. Client Liz Blackwood has been coming to Belanova Salon since the first week the salon opened and always gets a color and cut, and for any event she has, she says, “Elena does my hair.” Belanova Salon stands out from other salons to her because of the staff and their level of talent. She said she sticks to Belanova because, “you’re getting such great service, and it’s right in the neighborhood.” Belanova Salon is located in The Avenues at Westchase at 9660 W Linebaugh Ave. in Westchase. Dr. Carol Browne Welcomes New Patients at Florida Wellness & Rehab By Kim Thomas Florida Wellness & Rehab, located at 1820 Wellness Lane in Trinity, offers exceptional Chiropractic Medicine and Primary Care Medicine with a focus on evidence-based, wellness healthcare. Stephen Unger, D.C. and Brandon Delle Chiaie, D.C. welcome Carol Browne, D.O. to Florida Wellness & Rehab. Dr. Browne is a family practitioner who shares a common goal and philosophy with Dr. Unger and Dr. Delle Chiaie – these doctors are united in their dedication to helping you achieve your wellness objectives. Combining skill and expertise, the team at Florida Wellness & Rehab is committed to bringing you better health and a better way of life by teaching and practicing the true principles of wellness care. At Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, we’ve had the privilege of getting to know some of the area’s very best medical professionals. It is a true pleasure to see a doctor’s practice expand, knowing that it is due to meeting the needs of a growing, well-cared-for clientele that is coming through the doors because of excellent care. That is what has happened with Florida Wellness & Rehab in Trinity. In February 2012, Dr. Unger and Dr. Delle Chiaie moved to a new wellness center with more than 5,000-sq.-ft. where Florida Wellness & Rehab patients will enjoy access to even more services. Now, in addition to chiropractic care, physical therapy, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and non-surgical spinal decompression, patients can also turn to Dr. Browne, who brings with her 24 years of experience as a full service, family practice

14

care provider. She is accepting new patients of all ages at Florida Wellness & Rehab and is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Meet Dr. Carol Browne “I am really excited to be here,” says Dr. Browne. “Throughout my entire career my philosophy has been to treat people how I want my family treated.” Dr. Browne says that it is wonderful to be working with like-minded colleagues. “A big reason that I came onboard is the BIG focus on wellness. I feel like I am getting back to the love of medicine – focusing on the health of my patients. One of Dr. Browne’s favorite quotes is from Andrew Taylor Still, M.D., who is considered the founder of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Still’s wise adage, “Any doctor can find disease. It takes a physician to find health.” Dr. Browne received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 1986 at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas. She has extensive experience in teaching osteopathic manipulation and family practice to medical students and residents, and has presented many formal lectures at physician meetings. She was on faculty at the University of North Texas Health Science Center/ Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). She was a member of both the Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Departments. She archived the rank of Associate Professor during her tenure at TCOM. In addition to caring for patients of all ages with all types of medical needs in rural Missouri –

August will mark her third year living in Florida – Dr. Browne has extensive training and experience in osteopathic manipulation, which couples nicely with chiropractic medicine. She is experienced in traditional family medicine and provides physicals, well-woman and well-man exams. Additionally, Dr. Browne is trained and experienced in trigger point injections, joint injections, bio-identical hormone replacement, Armour thyroid treatment and other modalities including cranial sacral therapy. When I met Dr. Browne and learned that she was experienced in cranial sacral therapy, I immediately made an appointment for my mother. She had experienced relief from severe headaches and an overall feeling of wellbeing with this type of therapy before, but the closest licensed therapist trained in this treatment was a far drive from our area. Dr. Browne was very thorough in her examination, and she has that special something that is very necessary to help someone with a treatment such as cranial sacral therapy – good hands. Soups Green Market Café showcases deliciously fresh soups, including their spinach and feta, butternut squash and apple and my favorite – tomato basil – to name a few. Served piping hot, the tomato basil soup is creamy and sweet and is the perfect addition to any meal.

Rice Bowls Made with brown rice and an array of fresh veggies, the rice bowls are every bit as delicious as they are healthy. From their Veggie bowl- made with brown rice, black beans, baked baby bella mushrooms, red onions, red peppers and diced tomatoes and mixed with garlic sun-dried pesto- to their Asian Bowl- made with brown rice, allnatural baked chicken, oriental sesame dressing, chow mein noodles, peas, mandarin oranges, cucumbers, almonds and avocado tossed in their cucumber wasabi dressing – variety is always an option. The Burrito Bowl, featuring brown rice, baked all-natural chicken, black beans, corn, red peppers, red onions, fresh salsa and jack blend cheese and topped with tortilla strips, is a must try menu item and the generous helping of rice and veggies is sure to satisfy your hunger.

Green Market Cafe uses the freshest, healthiest ingredients in all of its delicious offerings including their Veggie Portobello Wrap & Waldorf Salad

Grilled Wraps Grilled wraps are another great seller at Green Market Café and after trying their Veggie Portobello Wrap I can easily see why – it was amazing! Made on whole wheat bread, and filled with baked baby bella mushrooms, red peppers, red onions, cucumbers, avocados, basil, lettuce, tomatoes and sundried pesto, and grilled to perfection, every bite seemed to just melt in my mouth and made for a taste that was out of this world.

Salads If you love salads then you will adore the menu at Green Market Cafe, which is characterized by a huge selection of fresh salads. On my previous visit I tried the Waldorf Salad – mixed greens, topped with a generous helping of
