Announcing New Contact Information From The Editor Kim Thomas Thanks to our readers and our advertisers we have enjoyed tremendous growth here at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and along with that growth have come upgrades to our website and email system. We cherish the emails and letters we receive from readers and depend upon the information we receive to keep our news briefs interesting and the community calendar up-to-date. With four publications, each with two email addresses – one for ads and one for editorial content – we decided to simplify things for ourselves and our readers and advertisers. Plus a recent problem with Yahoo underscored the need for a change. However, that problem did warm our hearts because of the great outpouring of support and concern that came from advertisers. We’d like to share what happened simply to warn others about possible email hacking. Our General Manager Jim O’Reilly has a great relationship with our advertisers, many of whom he has worked with for about eight years, and when his email account was

hacked and an email went out to his entire address book indicating that he was stuck in a foreign country and his personal effects and travel documents had been stolen, including his passport and identification, and that he needed assistance. It looked like it was sent from him but it was not. This email was sent out at 5:42 a.m. I saw it when I first woke up and at first thought that Jim was playing a joke on me, but when I saw the time it was sent I knew better. Even with his great sense of humor, I knew he wouldn’t be playing any jokes that early! I called Jim around 7 a.m. to let him know and he had already received numerous emails from concerned clients offering to help him. Jim couldn’t believe how many people reached out to him. This really drove home a couple of points to us. First, we have a fantastic, caring community and clientele. And, second, we needed to implement a more secure communication. If this ever happens to you, the first thing to do is change your password. To keep your account safe, it is recommended to change your pass-

word every couple of months. Email, Website, and Story Submissions The editorial email that we are now using for editorial submissions such as press releases, calendar events and community-related stories is: editorialdept@neighborhoodnewsfl.com

For advertising information and ad submissions, email: info@neighborhoodnewsfl.com. You can also submit stories for consideration and calendar items directly to us via our website, www.neighborhoodnewsfl.com. Once you are on the website, click on the area you are interested in and it will bring up the publication for your area. In the lower left corner, you will see three tabs: Submit a Story, Advertising Info and Contact Us. Jim O’Reilly would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who offered to help him. Hopefully, he will never be in a real situation like that but if he is, I’m certain he could turn to his family for help rather than our clients. It is nice to know you care, though! We look forward to hearing from you.

The project began as a 12,000-sq.-ft. building but once the developer got wind there were no impact fees, he chose to expand the project to over 21,000 sq. ft. to bring additional businesses to the area and help create jobs. “We are thrilled about the decision to expand the project upfront and ready to help find tenants for the new building,” said Michael Cox, Associate Vice President of Wells Fargo Advisors, and on the Board of Directors for the Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. Pasco County became one of Florida’s first counties to adopt the mobility fee as a replacement of transportation impact fees. The new fee schedule dramatically lowers the cost of office and industrial development in Pasco County, and in some places it’s free. The Pasco EDC partnered with the County to craft the program and gain support from the development community to help adopt the fee. Smiles by Graff Orthodontics Makes a Difference By Julie Kanehl If you are looking for an orthodontist for your teenager, or even for yourself, Smiles by Graff is an excellent choice. Their fun, patient-focused office has two nearby locations that make receiving treatment easy and convenient. The Trinity office is located at 1822 Health Care Drive just off of Mitchell Blvd., and the New Port Richey office is at 5522 Gulf Drive near Gulf High School. Dr. Myron S. Graff, DMD, PA is a Board Eligible Orthodontist who has been practicing in this area since 1976. Dr. Graff earned his Bachelor’s Degree from NYU in 1968, and then attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received his DMD degree in 1972. Originally drawn to pediatric dentistry during his service in the Army, his passion for orthodontics came from seeing what a difference could be made in people’s lives just by improving their smiles. Subsequently, he graduated from Co-

Myron Graff, DMD, and his staff really care about their patients at Smiles by Graff Orthodontics, with offices in New Port Richey & Trinity lumbia University’s School of Dental and Oral Surgery in 1976. Falling in love with this area, he opened his first practice nearby and has been improving smiles and making a difference ever since. Dr. Graff says, “I am the only or-

care and state-of-the-art treatment in a friendly environment. Dr. Graff uses only American-made products and has a beautiful “in-house” lab. New patients receive a thorough and complete orthodontic examination that includes going over the patient’s dental history, a clinical examination, photographs of the patient’s face and teeth, x-rays, and plaster models of their teeth. Each patient receives individual care at Smiles by Graff, and these records are used by the doctor and his staff to create a completely personalized treatment plan for each patient. There is no fee for the initial examination, and the doctor is known for working with patients and parents alike to make sure that the best care can be received regardless of income. Smiles by Graff accepts most major insurances, and convenient monthly payments may be arranged without interest or finance charges. Beth Healey-Purviance recently said, “Met Dr Graff for the first

time…Gave us a great plan of care and put my son at ease!” When was the last time your doctor actually called you to remind you of your appointment? Dr. Graff is extremely dedicated to making a difference in the world around him, and in inspiring the people that he comes in contact with to follow their dreams and go further than they might have dreamed possible. He does this by simply being personal and by taking that extra time to get to know his patients. In fact, he will even call his patients personally to remind them of their appointment the following day! Dr. Graff’s colorful and humorous personality is evident at both of his offices. His wife, Lonni Hopkins, teaches at H.W. Blake High School for the Arts, a magnet school for the Visual and Performing Arts in Tampa, and Dr. Graff enjoys supporting the young artists in her class and in the community by purchasing their artwork for his offices. Some are dramatic, and some are downright funny, but the art speaks to the students. He also has real “old school” arcade machines and an open, family friendly

office that makes going to the orthodontist an enjoyable experience for patients as well as their families. A father to three adult children, Dr. Graff’s experience makes the difference. Proud of their no-wait policy, Smiles by Graff refers to their waiting room as a reception area instead. In fact, according to their statistics, 95% of their patients receive treatment within five minutes of their appointment time, and 90% of patients complete their treatment on time. This is incredibly unique and important to the many busy families that come to Smiles by Graff. Marsha McVay Kline said, “We’ve been with Dr. Graff since 2005…Dr. Graff [and] his staff are amazing.” Smiles by Graff Gives Back Dr. Graff is especially passionate about making sure that everyone receives the care that they deserve. He says, “Because I have my own practice, I am able to step in and help children who might not have received care otherwise.” Putting his money where his

mouth is, so to speak, Dr. Graff offers a scholarship for graduating seniors at each of the local high schools, and has lost count of how much money he has given towards this effort. Research shows it has come to well over $50,000 over the years. In addition to his popular scholarships, Dr. Graff also sponsors a program through his office that calls for people to choose their own cause to support. He wants the young people that he comes in contact with to be aware of the needs of others, and the causes that affect us all. Smiles by Graff accepts “applications” from any community member that wants to participate, and if chosen, the selected charity will receive at least $1,000 and will be publicly acknowledged. In addition to the programs that he sponsors, he is also a Life Member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, West Coast of Florida Dental Association, and the Florida Association of Orthodontics. He has also been President of the West Pasco Dental Association. Dr. Graff has also been a member of the West Pasco

Chamber of Commerce for more than 20 years. Smiles by Graff is always offering contests, promotions and exciting events that keep patients and their families involved and excited during the treatment process. From giving away iTunes gift cards to each new patient, to giving patients a chance to give back to their community, Smiles by Graff makes a difference. Sharon Walton Grimes says, “Dr. Graff and his staff are great. We recommend his office to everyone we know. Whenever you mention Dr. Graff and his staff to anyone you get the same response - THEY ARE JUST WONDERFUL!” Smiles by Graff has two locations. The Trinity location is at 1822 Health Care Drive, and the New Port Richey office is located at 5522 Gulf Drive. Offices are open Monday – Thursday from 8 a.m.–-5:30 p.m., and Dr. Graff is available 24 hrs. a day for dental emergencies. Ramblin Rhodes Music Changes The Way Kids Learn to Play! By Julie Kanehl Ramblin Rhodes Music is a family based music and performing arts school that changes the way people of all ages learn music. At Ramblin Rhodes, the students are given the chance to practice and perform on their real stage for their friends and family as often as every month, which gives them a chance to learn, play and shine. Ramblin Rhodes has actually been in the Trinity area for nine years, since 2008, but just recently moved to their new location just off of Starkey Boulevard, across from Long Leaf. The Rhodes family has been in the music business for generations, from performing live and on records to providing quality instruments to generations of aspiring artists. Ramblin Rhodes has changed with the times, and now their latest concept is exciting parents and students of all ages (and some parents too) to learn to play music. “Whether you’re looking for classical training on piano or violin, want-

14

ing to jam on stage with your favorite songs on guitar, keyboards or drums, or wanting to learn how to properly train your voice, we have a teacher for you,” says Jason Rhodes. “We have instructors for most instruments, and all styles of music. Our teachers’ teaching styles are unique to each individual student’s needs.” Ramblin Rhodes teaches Guitar, Drums, Piano, Voice, Violin, Bass, Keyboard, Harmonica, Mandolin, Ukulele, Cello, Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone, just to name a few, and even offers a “Super Sampler” of lessons that includes lessons on up to four different instruments. Learn From Experienced Teachers The patriarch of Ramblin Rhodes is Joe Rhodes, who inspires students with his “on the road” touring and performing experience. Joe, who attended Rutgers University in New Jersey and University School in Nashville, plays a myriad of instruments, but enjoys the guitar, the trumpet and vocals the most. He and his wife Laurene

He adds, “We’re not too strict either. If the students aren’t having fun, then they won’t continue.”

During his time in Nashville, Joe was a popular guitarist at recording studios and had the opportunity to play and record with Emmylou Harris, the Everly Brothers and more. He also toured the U.S. playing a variety of genres and continues to play live all over Florida. In addition to teaching high school music, and managing

Joe’s new direction for Ramblin Rhodes Music incorporates all of the things he is passionate about – his family, teaching, and music. One of Joe and Laurene’s sons, Jason Rhodes and his wife, Cristine, are major players at Ramblin Rhodes Music. Jason, as you can expect, grew up surrounded by music, and predominantly played drums and percussion instruments as he grew up in nearby Tarpon Springs. After attending USF, he landed a gig in the music industry where he taught music and managed for 12 years. Now Jason is heavily involved in Ramblin Rhodes Music and their innovative approach towards teaching music. Ramblin Rhodes Unique Programs Due to the success of the Ramblin Rascals weekly and summer courses, Ramblin Rhodes Music is now offering Ramblin Rascals Preschool of Music and Performing Arts, a M-F day program for children ages 2 1/2 – 4. Cristine Rhodes has helped to create a music program for the littlest musicmakers in our lives! In the Ramblin Rascals’ classroom, Ms. Cristine will

prepare your child for kindergarten, with an emphasis on music and arts that introduces toddlers to a love of instruments and inspires a life-long love of music. Enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year has begun. The third Friday of each month during the school year is set aside for the students to jam on stage, showcasing the songs they’ve been working on with their teachers. These 3rd Friday concerts have become a premiere family event. From beginners to advanced, it’s entertainment and fun for everyone. Curtain Call helps build your child’s self esteem, creativity, and teamwork, through the world of theater arts. Led by Ms. Mikki, Curtain Call at Ramblin Rhodes Music provides a place where your child can sing, dance, and act with live musical theater productions throughout the year. Beginning in September, Ramblin Rhodes will host ‘Autism Sings’ music classes every Saturday afternoon for autistic children of all ages, and their families. The Rhodes family is excited to offer this unique program. “One of four autistic children is non-verbal,” says Jason. “Harvard studies have proven that combining singing with

motor activities stimulates areas of the brain in autistic children.” Playin’ Live The center of the Ramblin Rhodes Music studio is set up with a stage complete with lighting, professional sound equipment and genuine instruments. Set up for concerts, the center of Ramblin Rhodes is one part waiting area, one part hangout, and maybe eight parts stage. It’s cool, it’s exciting and it’s different. The students there hanker for a chance to play on that stage, and the teachers help their students to learn their music well enough so that they can not only play, but rock out on that stage. This totally unique approach to music is inspired by the popularity of the many performing shows on the air right now, from “American Idol” to “America’s Got Talent.” Kids love the opportunity to stretch their wings and show their stuff on a real stage, with the real deal equipment, and under the lights. Joe says, “The kids get so much out of it. The true joy is when the family, the parents and the grandparents shake our hands after the concert and say how happy they are.” The center stage area is sur-

rounded by smaller, independent music studio classrooms where students can learn everything from vocals to the violin to electric guitar. Parents love Ramblin Rhodes because the kids love going, the programs are affordable, and the music studio doors have glass doors so that they can always see what is happening. Completely focused on hiring teachers that are professional, passionate and experienced, Joe says, “Every time we hire a teacher, we want to find out if they play out. Many of our teachers have bands, albums or sing locally. We hire teachers who do the real deal.” Ramblin Rhodes Music also sells a variety of high quality and affordable musical instruments, music books and accessories. As guitars are a huge draw at Ramblin Rhodes, they carry the entire line of Dean Guitars and Luna Guitars, which are designed to be unique, fun and beautiful with exciting designs, shapes and inlays. They also carry the ddrum line for those students who love to play percussion. If you’re not sure if you’re ready to buy a new instrument, they offer used and consignment options, and if you are interested in renting musical instruments, they do that too! You can even rent to own. Ramblin Rhodes Music is a great place to learn music. They teach students from 1-101, and the Rhodes family inspires a love of music in everyone they meet. Ramblin Rhodes Music is located at 3002 Starkey Blvd., in Trinity. They are open Mon. – Fri., 11 a.m. – 8 p.m., and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sat. Medi-Weightloss Clinics® of Trinity is the One that Works®! By Julie Kanehl For many of us, losing weight is extremely difficult. Many don’t know where to start, while others feel as if they’ve tried everything and nothing has worked. Losing weight is about looking good, absolutely, but it’s also about feeling good and actually being good as in being healthy. It seems like there is a new study released every week that links obesity to other health concerns like heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. According to recent statistics quoted in their brochure, obese workers lose 13 more days of work, on average, than non-obese workers, and they spend $2,000 more on health insurance than their healthier coworkers. Obesity is now considered to be an epidemic, and the professionals at Medi-Weightloss Clinics® of Trinity are ready to help you every step of the way. If you are ready to lose weight and are looking for a program that is proven and effective, then the physician-guided MediWeightloss program may be for you. The Trinity Medi-Weightloss

22

Clinic is located in the Mitchell Crossings Shopping Plaza at the corner of Little Rd. and Mitchell Blvd. and has been helping patients lose weight since they opened their doors in 2010. Medi-Weightloss Clinics® of Trinity is part of a network of Medi-Weightloss Clinics® that stretches across the United States. In fact there are 83 locations, and it is one of the fastest growing franchises in existence because it “is the one that works!®” In fact, according to their website, their program has helped patients lose more than 2.3 million pounds. The weight-loss focused business was founded in 2004 by Edward Kaloust and Carol Balkcom, who found that Americans were spending billions of dollars per year on weightloss programs that did not work longterm. Together they wanted to create a program that was multi-faceted, and that helped people lose and keep their weight off long-term. Mary Ann Levine, owner of the Trinity Clinic says, “This program really does work because we guide people into making a lifestyle change.”

Levine, who manages three Florida Medi-Weightloss Clinics®, wholeheartedly believes in the program because she has seen what a difference it can make. Marcus Occhipinti, MD, is the physician on staff at the Trinity Clinic, and his experience and passion for helping people live a healthier lifestyle has been a large part of the program for many local residents. Dr. Occhipinti says, “This program can help anybody. It’s for people who are very overweight and it is also for people who are not terribly overweight, but want to lose weight. Each patient is unique and so is their treatment.” The Medi-Weightloss Clinics® program is based on five keys to success: Medical, Motivational, Educational, Nutritional and Physical. By guiding patients through the program with these five keys in mind, patients truly succeed, the weight comes off and they learn to keep it off. How it works There are three phases to the pro-

gram, and phase one begins with the initial consultation. The 90-minute initial consultation at Medi-Weightloss Clinics® is a complete physical that takes place with Dr. Occhipinti. It includes a New Patient Starter Kit, a comprehensive blood panel, and a physical exam that includes vital signs and an EKG. He then takes a weight, body fat analysis, and a waist circumference, and discusses exercise and nutrition and the expectations for both going forward. Dr. Occhipinti may prescribe medicine to help with appetite suppression, as well as the MediWeightloss Clinics® exclusively formulated Fat Burner and their nutritional Signature Products which all work together to help people get the energy boost that they need to be successful. Combined with supplemental injections, like B1 and B6, which are proven to curb cravings, patients are given a huge advantage over someone who is going at weight-loss alone. This program is not a “quick fix” but is designed to help people lose weight by changing their lifestyle. Patients are guided through the pro-

After the initial consultation, patients are put on a strict, low-calorie diet that is primarily protein based. For one week, patients abstain from carbohydrates and fat. Dr. Occhipinti says, “Carbs turn into sugars, and the body selectively uses sugar, and when the sugar is gone, it starts to burn fat.” This explains why some patients lose 5-10 lbs in the first week alone, and about 20 in the first month. The doctor carefully monitors each patient to document how much of their weight loss is water and how much of it is fat. Throughout the process, the patient’s health is consistently and carefully monitored. After the first week, the second phase begins. Dr. Occhipinti says, “In the second phase we liberalize calories by adding Owner Mary Ann Levine and Dr. Marcus carbs and good fat to the diet, all Occhipinti are ready to help you reach your depending on the amount of exgoal weight ercise a person is committed to doing.” He adds, “The second gram, and are taught how to eat betphase is about changing the way you ter, exercise, and live a healthier are doing things and changing your atlifestyle so that when they are ready to titude towards food.” leave the program, the weight stays Patients meet with the doctor off.

every week to check-in, receive treatment, and to discuss the progress that has been made. Studies show that when people have the opportunity to work with a physician in this way, they are more likely to be successful. During the second phase, patients generally lose between 2 1/2– 4 lbs per week until they reach their goal weight, and once their goal weight is achieved, the third and final phase begins. The final phase is inexpensive and appointments become monthly as opposed to weekly and are there to reinforce the program and to help patients make their new healthy lifestyle habits something that they will always take with them. Dr. Occhipinti and the staff at the Trinity Clinic work with patients throughout each phase, no matter how long it takes. Patients can also track their weight loss, find recipes that work with each phase and check out fitness tips and videos on their Medi-Weightloss Clinics® Signature Patient Website. Success Stories Danika lost 72 pounds by going to Medi-Weightloss Clinics®, and she says, “What I love most about this

plan is that it is very easy to follow and doesn’t require too much effort. I am a full-time working mom of two children under two, and I felt a little despair at the notion of losing all of the weight I had to lose. In order for me to be successful, I knew my weight loss plan would have to be simple, easy to follow, and adaptable to a very busy lifestyle.” Laura lost over 100 pounds, and says, “The staff at Medi-Weightloss Clinics® helped me realize that this program is about a lifestyle change, not about just being on a diet. I took that lesson to heart, and have strived not only to lose weight, but to change my life.” If you are ready to make a change for the better, and really want to lose the weight, come to the Medi-Weightloss Clinics® in Trinity, because they are “The one that works!”® The Trinity Medi-Weightloss Clinics is located at 8923 Mitchell Blvd. in the Mitchell Commons Shopping Plaza. Make Strides Against Breast Cancer by Walking this October By Julie Kanehl The American Cancer Society has an incredible nationwide program called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer that raises awareness and crucial funds for breast cancer research, and Pasco County is having their 2nd annual “Put On Your Pink Bra” Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October 20th, 2012 at The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel. This free, noncompetitive, 5k event is a great way to show support and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer is a disease that is affecting more and more of us. It is affecting or mothers, our wives, our sisters, our aunts, our friends, and even our daughters. Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, and women of all ages, races and creeds are being diagnosed every day. In fact, The American Cancer Society says that Florida ranks 2nd in the nation for (diagnosed) incidences of breast cancer, and is ranked 3rd in the nation in mortality. Just to

26

be clear, that means that of the over 15,000 women who are diagnosed with the disease ever year, nearly 3,000 actually die from it. Those are some shocking numbers, and that is why it is so important to be educated, to educate the ones you love, be committed to early detection, and to find a cure. The American Cancer Society or ACS, is a trusted source for information on all kinds of cancer, and their dedication to fighting cancer is more than a marketing campaign. Their goal is to “find, prevent, treat and cure the disease.” The ACS is the largest nonprofit funder of cancer research next to the federal government, and has been involved in nearly every major breakthrough in the fight against this kind of cancer. For example, they funded research into breast-conserving surgery, which is using lumpectomy plus radiation treatments, and they helped to establish the mammogram as the best way (and now very accessible way) of detecting breast cancer early. They also were involved in discovering lifesaving treatments such as hormone blockers like Herceptin and Tamox-

ifen, which can save lives. In addition to these important findings, the ACS has been involved in the genetic research and the discovery of the cancer-causing oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes. These are just a few ways that the ACS truly makes a difference in the fight against breast cancer. But all of the fancy terminology aside, The American Cancer Society is the one people turn to when they receive a cancer diagnosis; in fact one in two women diagnosed with breast cancer will turn to them for information and support. The ACS offers all kinds of support for women (and their families) who are diagnosed with cancer. In addition to offering online information and support, they offer programs like Road to Recovery, which helps people get the transportation that they need to see their doctors. They also have an amazing program called Hope Lodge, which gives cancer patients a place to stay when they are out of town for treatment. Additionally, they help women who are undergoing breast cancer treatment with their TLC Magalog, which is a catalog and magazine that features helpful articles and offers affordable items such as breastforms and wigs. Treatment information, options and research are available 24 hours a day on their website, www.cancer.org, and they also provide

programs at local hospitals where people can truly come together, know that they are not alone and receive care, support and even tips on how to feel better about themselves while going through treatment. These are just a few ways in which The ACS makes an impact on cancer. Come Show Your Support by Wearing Your Pink Bra! Pasco County’s 2nd annual “Put On Your Pink Bra” Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel on October 20 is one of 26 walks that will be taking place in Florida this October. The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is a lot of fun and is becoming famous for its pink bras! While wearing a pink bra is completely voluntary, people really enjoy coming together ahead of time, decorating their bras, and wearing them at the walk. Last year’s walk was a sea of pink bras, pink boas, pink hats and smiling faces. People of all ages came out to show their support, walk, join and come together as a force against breast cancer. Linda Taggart was diagnosed with

breast cancer in 2011 and she has shared her story of how quickly your life can be taken over by the diagnosis. She says, “Time is everything when dealing with cancer. It was 36 days from diagnosis to double mastectomy to confirmed staging (Stage 3).” For Linda, her strength to fight breast cancer and the ability to raise awareness has increased her faith in God. She says, “He has held my hand during this journey and shown me that even something as frightening as cancer can result in good things; stronger bonds with family, new friendships and learning that life doesn’t end with a diagnosis.” She has been an inspiration to many women who know her and gain

Arry’s Roofing Services Shares the Advantages of Owning a Metal Roof By Katie Thomas James "Arry" Housh has been actively involved in the roofing company for thirty years. Alongside his wife Becky Housh and with the help of their two sons Stephen and Matthew, he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing, a company dedicated to providing quality craftsmanship and exceptional customer service. The Housh family's dedication has enabled Arry's Roofing to expand their small, honorable and trustworthy family-run business into the well-known and trusted company it is today; servicing residential, commercial and industrial projects with value and integrity. I recently spoke to Matt regarding metal roofing and the benefits it provides homeowners. Arry’s Roofing fully supports the advantages of metal roofing and is a specialist in metal roofing. Additionally, Arry’s in-house custom sheet metal shop allows the metal roofing specialists to customize your roof to be an exact fit for your house and your designs. Matt says, “Metal roofing is more

of a craftsmanship and an art, similar to tile. In the early 2000s we saw the advantages of metal roofing and started our metal roofing shop, trained our guys specifically in metal roofing and began to create a reputation of being metal roofing specialists.” Metal Advantages: Metal roofing is known to be initially more expensive than other roofing types at first glance, but in the long run metal roofing can save homeowners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increase the resale value of your home. Matt explains that the average lifespan of a non-metal roof is seventeen years; whereas metal roofing is proven to last 2-3 times longer with fewer repairs than other types of roofing materials. When installed by qualified and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than 50 years with little maintenance. Matt adds that a metal roof is extremely beneficial, especially in Florida, because there is no other roof composite that is as strong and as durable as a

metal roof, which if installed properly can effectively withstand the harsh Florida winds and storms. If you are a homeowner and are seeking out a way to reduce the price of your energy bill and would like to build a roof with energy-saving material, Arry’s Roofing recommends you look into getting a metal roof. Metal roofing is economically sustainable and better for the environment than many traditional types of materials, such as petroleum-based shingles. The installation of reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40 percent in cooling costs. Arry's Roofing is proactive and

By keeping on top of what is offered, we are able to bring our customers cleaner, better and safer products." The company has all the knowledge necessary to help you find the right metal roof that will not only look beautiful on your home, but will also be an asset in saving money and cutting energy costs. The Brass Tap Redefines the Neighborhood Bar By Dara Tucker In October 2008 three business partners opened the first Brass Tap at The Shoppes of Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel. Two years later they opened one in Brandon, and in March 2012, Trinity was lucky enough to get their own neighborhood Brass Tap. At any given time you’ll find 40 – 60 different craft beers on tap at The Brass Tap; 25 – 30 of them are staple beers that they always carry, and 30 – 35 beers change, allowing for a varied experience every visit. They also have hundreds of imported or local craft beer in bottles (which can be purchased for carry out, too), in addition to premium wines and cigars. The Brass Tap has great relationships with brewers and distributors which benefits customers who would normally not have access to such an amazing variety of specialty microbrews locally. General Manager Jessica Buchta has created a feel to the upscale beer bar that’s very much in tune with our area. She started with great hospitality. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful; wanting to make sure you find the perfect beer for your liking. All you have to do is name a couple of beers you know you already like, and they’ll describe the flavor profile of new beers you might enjoy. If you’re still undecided they’ll let you sample a suggestion to help you commit. When you visit most afternoons there is a very laidback, relaxed atmosphere to the bar. You’ll find all ages relaxing on the patio or inside cooling off with a beer after a day at work or a round of golf. Although it doesn’t serve food, Brass Tap has partnered with local restaurants such as Buffalo Wild

34

Wings, Five Guys, Ichiban Sushi and Brick Oven Pizzeria, all of which deliver to the bar. Jessica says that even if you’ve made something at home and want it with your beer you can bring it in. If you’re looking for a night out, The Brass Tap is also the place to go. Local bands such as The Sunsetters, One Mile Final and Tone Granade are in full swing starting at 8 p.m. on Thursdays and at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, when the bar is alive and energetic. If it’s possible for a bar to be both upbeat and relaxed at the same time, The Brass Tap has mastered it. One of the great new beers that The Brass Tap introduced me to when I visited is the locally brewed Big Storm’s Wavemaker, which is amber ale that is made right in Odessa. Big Storm’s owners Clay Yarn and Mike Bishop enjoyed The Brass Tap when the first one opened in Wesley Chapel, and now their own beer is being served here. Clay explains, “The Brass Tap gives us a great place to display our beer. Our brewery is right across the street in the West Pasco Industrial Park. We’ve always had a good working relationship with The Brass Tap, and we wanted our first beer tapped there. It was a natural choice— they’ve always been very supportive of us even when we were getting started.” Specials on Craft Beers When you visit you’ll find there are plenty of daily specials. Happy hour is Monday-Friday, 3-7 p.m., with $1.50 off all drafts. Monday and Wednesdays are hospitality industry nights, when if you wear your shirt, bring in your paystub or I.D., you’ll receive half off all drafts and select wines starting at 9 p.m. On Tuesdays

Tampa Bay Local Beads to Raise Money and Awareness for Charity Rather than throw them in the trash, Tampa Bay local Kathi Stoy has found a way to turn annoying directmail political campaign ads into a way to provide food to the homeless. Her creative “NO B.S. Political Beads” are helping to spread awareness and raise money for an important Tampa Bay charity. Stoy is recycling direct mail political ads to make NO B.S. Political Beads; a line of jewelry made from political campaign flyers. One hundred percent of the money raised from the sale of these necklaces, bracelets and earrings will go to Trinity Café, a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit, non-denominational Tampa charity that serves meals to the poor and homeless. “If You Can’t Beat ‘em…Bead ‘em!” “Too much money is being spent promoting politicians and not enough money is going towards fixing real problems. I want a little of the money wasted on these flyers to

help people in need,” says Stoy. Pam Sica, also a Tampa Bay resident, agrees, “I purchased a necklace because I too am sick of these flyers cluttering my mailbox. Too much talk and not enough action.” NO B.S. Political Beads are currently available at the Sound Exchange locations in Tampa (813-978-9316) and Pinellas Park (727-545-0042). Prices are: Earrings ($5), Bracelets ($5) and Necklace ($8); 100% of the money raised will go to Trinity Café. Other local businesses and individuals are encouraged to “Jump on the Beadwagon!” About Trinity Café Trinity Café has been a beacon of hope and compassion in the Tampa Bay community since 2001. Brian’s love for his native Buffalo is evident as soon as you walk through the door and see the St. Angelo’s Pizza logo with the signature buffalos and the Buffalo Bills memorabilia that decorates the walls. Pizza, Wings & Buffalo Favorites The Buffalo-theme carries on to the menu, which offers various dishes that are native to Buffalo, New York. Besides the excellent Buffalo wings, you will find a whole section of the menu that is dedicated to Buffalo, fea-

turing specialties such as a Sahlans Hot Dog, a Beef on Weck Sandwich, the Haddock Fish-Fry, and much more. One of Buffalo’s favorites, “The Beef on Weck Sandwich” is freshly cooked inside round roast beef that is sliced thin, piled high on a fresh kimmerweck roll, and served with fresh horseradish. Pizzas at St. Angelo’s are handtossed and topped with Sorrento mozzarella cheese. Only fresh, never canned, vegetables are used for toppings. “Our produce is delivered fresh daily and is hand sliced for your pizza, salad, and sandwiches,” says Brian. Along with excellent pizza, you can order a calzone stuffed just the way you like it with your choice of mozzarella, ricotta, fresh sliced meats

and an assortment of fresh vegetables. With many more options than we can list here, St. Angelo’s Pizza’s menu features something for everyone. Salads, sandwiches, 100% Pure Angus Beef hand-patted burgers, calzones, and other Italian favorites are offered daily and always served fresh. St. Angelo’s Specials The Daily Specials Board is ever changing with new creations, as well as many all-time customer favorites. When I was at St. Angelo’s, a few of the specials that caught my eye were the Taco Platter and the Chicken Marsala. The most popular special that is always a great deal is a fifteenslice pizza, fifteen wings, and fifteen garlic knots for only $21.95.

Residents Want Solutions for the Flooding of Thousand Oaks By Diane Galemmo The Thousand Oaks development, located on the northwest corner of Trinity Blvd. and Little Rd. in Trinity has been plagued with unexpected flooding, dating back as far as late 2002. But with the sheer amount of rain left behind from tropical storm Debby in June (10 to 16 inches), streets were underwater for three days, preventing many people from leaving their homes. Rains got inside several homes and others had water inside their garage or on their porch. Debby alone brought about 16 inches of rain over three days and a series of storms over the next several weeks added another 10 inches to the already saturated ground. That exceeded what officials call a 100year-storm. (The 100-year flood is more accurately referred to as the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability Flood, since it is a flood that has a 1% chance of being equaled or exceeded in any single year.)

42

Almost three months after Debby, much of the standing water is gone, but the ground still remains saturated and many area residents were worried that Isaac was heading their way. Fortunately, there was no flooding reported in our area as a result of tropical storm Isaac, but decade-long difficulties at Thousand Oaks still remain. According to Stephen Bennett, who moved to Thousand Oaks in 2002, “The whole roadway came apart the first year we were here. We had hubcap-sized potholes and ruts all over the place.” A study conducted by the county in 2004 found that the roads in Thousand Oaks were not built to county standards; they were built too low because the developers used inaccurate ground water measurements taken during a drought and were compromised by rising groundwater in certain areas, causing the ruts and potholes in the roads throughout the community. Some retention ponds fill up quickly and don’t drain prop-

erly because they are a few feet lower than surrounding wetlands. At the time, senior assistant county attorney Anthony Salzano said Pasco’s biggest concern is with the design of Thousand Oaks’ roads, and the groundwater level engineer Ray Gustafson chose as his baseline. Gustafson agreed that the unexpected flooding may have been more than the road could have withstood. And although the county has spent over $2 million over the past several years on smaller-scale storm water

improvements, those improvements start to fail when a storm exceeds the 100-year-level. Officials say that the origin of the problem began when the developer was allowed to build homes in the neighborhood that were several inches below the water table. Residents are up in arms over the flooding. Residents stormed Pasco’s commissioners’ chambers recently looking for answers. Some Trinityarea residents said that they would volunteer to hop aboard a bulldozer

to dig drainage ditches to avoid a repeat of flooding after tropical storm Debby. The county needs to go ahead and bulldoze the area for drainage as an emergency measure, says Ron Levi, president of Trinity Oaks Association and resident of Trinity Oaks. “I’ll drive it,” Levi said about operating a bulldozer. Thousand Oaks and the nearby Trinity Oaks neighborhoods are not supposed to flood and that’s why county commissioners were inundated with complaints. “Something has to be done,” Levi told commis-

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

sioners. “You can’t just keep throwing the buck from one political place to another political place.” Cortney King who lives in Thousand Oaks says, “This is a travesty. It’s been allowed to happen and allowed to continue.” The Trinity Oaks and Thousand Oaks communities sit at the bottom of a bowl in the Duck Slough watershed. Those neighborhoods were some of the hardest hit in Pasco by Debby and subsequent rainstorms. A possible building moratorium in the area of the Duck Slough watershed

appealed to homeowners. County officials have been working on flooding problems in the area since 2003. The angry residents wondered: Why is a fix taking so long? It’s been more than nine years. They want answers. Several residents called for legal action against the developer. Resident Michael Styers, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper says, “Every time I hear the weather (report) I cringe.” Pasco County officials said they sympathize with residents’ frustrations but emphasized there is no quick solution to the problems that plague the Thousand Oaks and Trinity Oaks communities. Permits for major drainage projects could take a long time to obtain. The county must prove that flood control measures won’t harm more people than they help. The county wanted to expedite deepening what appears to be an old drainage ditch from 30 to 40 years ago, but federal authorities denied permission for dredging. In addition, nobody quite knows whether any drainage system can handle the incredible rainfall that Debby dumped on the area, said Annette

Doying, Pasco’s emergency management chief. The county also has to find the money to build expensive drainage projects. One pond several years ago cost about $12 million. Last year, Pasco also asked the Southwest Water Management District (SWIFTMUD) for or permission to dredge a canal through what the county believes is an already disturbed wetland, but SWIFTMUD denied that request. However, leadership at SWIFTMUD has since changed, and county commissioners hoping for a different result directed staff to renew the county’s dredging request. The county and Southwest Florida Water Management District are checking to see whether flood control facilities in the area were built according to specifications in permits. Michelle Baker, chief assistant country administration says, “The county cannot simply drain the swamp. We are not allowed to do that.” She says the county is exploring both large-scale and smaller solutions. Staffers will determine which options are cost effective, practical or able to qualify for a permit.

“Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “left-brained” or “right-brained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The results of Dr. Melillo’s program have been remarkable and have changed people’s lives. Since 1998, approximately 1,000 children have completed the program and have shown remarkable academic, emotional, behavioral, and social improvements. Brain Balance Really Works The Brain Balance Center of Oldsmar is owned by Executive Director Larry Polnicky, who had a successful career in the IT field until the search for help for his son’s severe

50

autism brought him to a Brain Balance Center in Georgia. “We had tried everything for Ben,” says Polnicky, who still gets choked up when he talks about his son. “We were late to realize that our son was Autistic. We were spending $20,000 a year trying to find anything that would help him.” At five years old, Ben was still in diapers, was completely non-verbal, which meant he had never said a word, and was still only able to eat baby food. Fatefully, the Polnickys happened to attend a Zac Brown concert, and partway through the music, Brown, who is the celebrity spokesperson for Brain Balance Achievement Centers, did a presentation about the benefits of the program. The Polnickys went to the closest Brain Balance Center, which was in Georgia, and even moved up there for a short time so that their son would be able to participate in the after-school program. “Within four weeks Ben was reaching for new kinds of food. We were thrilled,” says Polnicky. After 12 weeks in the program, which is typically one session, Ben was eating normally; after a second 12week program his temper-tantrums and some of his OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) behavior went away,

and he took himself to the bathroom on his own. The Polnickys were so excited about their son’s progress. They didn’t know if he would ever be able to do these things, and within a matter months, he was progressing rapidly. Ben continued to make progress, expressing the sounds “ba” and “ma.” It was this success in Ben that made Polnicky decide to open a center in our area, so that kids with all manners of learning disabilities, from ADHD to autism and everything in between, could find help and support. At Brain Balance of Oldsmar, Ben is now on his way to talking. Jocelyn Kubus, who works with him at the center, says, “Ben is starting to make out words now, like purple and mama; it isn’t quite the word yet but it’s getting close. Once Brain Balance of Oldsmar came into being, the right people just seemed to come into place, and the staff at Brain Balance grew. Executive Director Larry Polnicky works closely with Center Director Laura Crumley and Assistant Director Heather Lascano to ensure that every child at Brain Balance of Oldsmar is given the help they deserve for continuous improvement.

Larry Polnicky and his son Ben Prior to working as Center Director at Brain Balance, Laura Crumley practiced in Georgia as a licensed professional counselor for ten years working with adults and children. She says, “In my practice I saw numerous kids who were on several medications that were having very negative side effects. And although medication has its own place, I am excited to be part of a company that was able to move beyond a traditional model and help kids from a neurological standpoint.”

Program Director Claire Hart comes to the center with a Doctorate in Teacher Education and Physical Education, as well as 37 years of teaching experience in Pinellas County. The rest of the capable and dedicated staff includes Lead Sensory Motor Coach Andrea Widoff, Certified Teacher Jessika Kubus and Assistant Academic Instructor Jocelynn Kubus. The Brain Balance Program Brain Balance is not a medical facility, and so it does not employ doctors, write prescriptions for medications, or accept insurance. Instead, Brain Balance is a facility that has a completely holistic approach to children who have neurobehavioral disorders. The staff at Brain Balance doesn’t really believe in labels. They do take all labels into consideration; however, they also believe that labels can create limitations for children, as well as their parents, who often blame themselves, or get so frustrated that they begin to give up. Hope is everywhere you look in this modern facility. Hope for each child that walks through those doors. Upon being accepted into the Brain Balance program, each child is

given an extensive assessment that gives the staff the opportunity to get a grasp on where each child’s strengths and weaknesses are, and to detect any deficiencies, and at what level they occur. The assessments that they use are well-known evaluation exams that have been used in schools across the country to help determine disabilities, but in this case, instead of trying to find a label for a child, they are trying to find a pattern that would indicate which part of the brain isn’t “connecting” properly. The Brain Balance program is tailor-made for each individual child and works with kids from the ages of 5-18. Each program generally consists of one or two 12-week afterschool programs, where each child participates in a range of activities that help them to improve the connections between both hemispheres of their brains. There is a 1:1 teacher to child ratio at the Brain Balance Center, and while the kids are having fun and playing ball, balancing on a balance beam, and playing games on the state-of-the-art computer programs available at the facility, they are really making marked progress in their sensory and motor development, as well as their academics. The

idea is to help kids create a healthier body and brain function. Brain Balance incorporates programs and activities that have been proven to help kids who have these disorders, and they have them all at the facility so that each child has access to not just one or two, but hundreds. Studies show that many kids who have neurobehavioral disorders have poor immune systems, and that a poor diet may play a role in triggering problems as well. Therefore, nutrition is an important part of the Brain Balance program, and when they are accepted into the program, each child is given a complete nutritional workup by Nutritionist Carole Farace that includes blood and urine analysis. This gives the nutritionist the opportunity to sit down with the child and the child’s family and discuss what their child’s body really needs. Instead of suggesting something generic like a multi-vitamin or one kind of vitamin that’s been known to work, they pride themselves on tailormaking a dietary plan for each child. All-in-all, the program customizes a program that incorporates physical, sensory, academic, behavioral and nutritional guidance to each child. Parents are updated with progress reports every two weeks, and generally students have improved so dramatically after the first 12 weeks that an additional session is not necessary. Real Results At the conclusion of the 12-week program, another assessment is given, and their achievement is measured and shared with the family. In very severe cases, a second 12-week session will be recommended, but generally students are released after the first 12-week session with dramatic improvement. Polnicky says, “In a study where

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

60 of the students had ADHD, 82% of those students were shown to no longer exhibit any signs of ADHD after one 12-week program.” He adds, “Two-thirds of the students improved by two grade levels, and onethird of the students actually improved by four grade levels; 100% had some improvement, and 0% had no improvement, so even if I didn’t know from personal experience that this program worked, we have the research to back us up.” The Brain Balance Mission The Brain Balance Mission Statement is “to make the Brain Balance Program available to as many children as possible, that each child may reach their greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.” In order to do this, education is key. The directors, coaches and founders of Brain Balance really want parents to understand that there is hope, that there can be success, and that their children have bright futures ahead of them regardless of labels or limitations. That is why each month Brain Balance offers free informative events for parents to come and learn about the details of the program and to see if it’s a right fit for their family. Guests who attend the free event are given a discount on the initial assessment. The next informative FREE parent event dates are: Oct. 13 @ 10 a.m., Nov. 3 and Nov. 17 @ 10 a.m. and Dec. 1 and 22 @ 10 a.m.; the event will last about one hour and reservations are needed, as seating is limited. Rotary Club of Trinity Takes Students on Shopping Spree By Diane Galemmo In July, The Rotary Club of Trinity held a back-to-school project where ten Rotarians took students, ages 11– 13, from the Metropolitan Ministries summer camp on a shopping trip to purchase clothing, school supplies and hygiene products for the upcoming school year. The students were selected because they completed Metropolitan Ministries Middle School Summer Leadership Camp, a camp for children of homeless and impoverished families. As part of their reward, Trinity Rotary and its president, Julie Rogers, thought it would be a nice gift to take these students shopping for back-toschool clothes and supplies. Many of these students have never purchased brand new clothes and this was a huge confidence builder for them. The Trinity Rotary and attorney Chuck Phillips contributed $250 to each of these students. They shopped at Mitchell Ranch Plaza in stores such as Target, Ross,

56

and Payless Shoes. They shopped from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a Rotarian who helped keep track of their expenditures and their money while providing a list of shopping guidelines for the student. Students were permitted to purchase appropriate school clothes, shoes, undergarments, hair accessories, personal hygiene products, and new back packs. The youngsters spent their money mostly on clothes and shoes. After the shopping excursion, Trinity Rotary took the students out to lunch at Chilis. Trinity Rotary chose this service project to promote positive self-esteem for rising middle school students. Rogers says, “We thought that if students felt good about what they looked like, they would possibly not be bullied, could focus on their studies and excel in school. Trinity Rotary partnered with Metropolitan Ministries because they provided qualified students who are working to improve themselves and acquire leadership skills.” Each Rotarian had a student they worked with. Student Cheryl said she

had never shopped at Marshalls, “My mom said it was too expensive.” After finding some bargains, she commented, “This place is not bad. Loved it.” “The girl I shopped with was 12 years old and so appreciative of every-

thing we purchased,” says Rotarian Ginny Pierce. “I was so impressed that her first priority was to get all her school supplies and then shop for herself. She always went for the sale racks first and I don’t believe we bought one item that wasn’t on sale. She did

not want anything frivolous but clothes items that she could mix and match along with two pair of shoes.” Rotarian Wayne Self shopped with Dylan “who was very appreciative of our rotary club for taking the time out of our morning to spend both time and money helping to supply them with back-to-school clothing and supplies. He said he had never spent that amount of money at one time shopping. Thanks to the Rotary Club, he now has two pairs of shoes for school.” Rotarian Mike Chissell’s student “was very appreciative of the shopping trip and opened up after I told her that I have a 12-year-old daughter who likes the same kind of clothes and music. She was very nice to be with and conscientious of what she was buying to make sure it was nice and appropriate that her mother would approve of.” Due to the sensitivity of the children’s confidentiality of their family’s financial and/or living situation and to protect the children’s dignity and respect, there are no pictures of the youngsters but they certainly enjoyed the time, money and attention that left them feeling empowered. Metropoli-

tan Ministries Associate Director of Outreach, Nancy Dougherty, says, “All in all, the feedback from the youngsters was very positive. They were all grateful and a couple of the girls expressed being overwhelmed by the choices that they had. (Their comments were), ‘This was great! Look at all I have to start school this year!’ and ‘I’ve never been allowed or able to make so many choices before,’ ‘Look how much I got’ and ‘This was great.’” They also expressed that their shopping spree was well beyond their expectations. Ms. Jean, the Summer Director, shared that she received “many a thank you” along with hugs from the youngsters who have now entered high school, many of them at J.W. Mitchell High. Note: Metropolitan Ministries, located at 3214 U.S. 19, Holiday, 727-277-8351, faithfully reaches out to poor, hungry and homeless men, women and children in their time of need, providing life-changing answers. Small Businesses Find Financing Through the Pasco EDC Microloan Fund Help is out there for small businesses in Pasco County, just ask Nicole Denzik, owner of United Underwriters of Tampa, an independent property and casualty agency located in Lutz. Denzik is the sixth person to receive a microloan from Pasco Economic Development Council, Inc. While working in phonebook sales for AT&T, Denzik noticed the industry declining. Ready for a change she searched for an industry that was thriving and would provide a good income for years to come. A friend recommended getting into insurance, so she spent 6 months learning the industry and opened her own office in 2009. United Underwriters of Tampa has been steadily growing since day one and with the help of a microloan from Pasco EDC, they will be able to hire a part time employee to help manage the office. “Thanks to the microloan from Pasco EDC, I have ordered new computers, the website is being rebuilt, brochures are in, additional phone line is being connected, and a payroll company has been hired,” said Denzik.

If a specific labor pool is what they need, we’ll work with our local partners to bring it to the customer. We are here to help them succeed in growing their businesses.” 1Brick, LLC is one of four companies considering locations in Pasco County who applied for the Florida’s QTI tax refund program at this week’s Pasco County Board of County Commissioners’ meeting. Hagen offers an open invitation to companies wanting to expand in Pasco County, saying, “We have room to grow in Tampa Bay. Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center meets federal guidelines under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), the New Port Richey City Council will allot $6,500 to install automated door openers to make access easier for disabled people who use a scooter, mobility cart or wheelchair. According to city officials, these people have complained about the difficulty they have opening the bathroom doors and the doors to the pool deck. One swimmer, Judy Kargman, says, “That sounds good,” regarding installing automatic door openers. The disabled Vietnam War veteran gets around on a mobility cart. Kargman complained for years about access at the pool. Her husband Larry has been battling his own health problems and cannot always accompany her to the pool to help open gates and doors. She said she would like the option to navigate the pool area on her own. “An individual submitted a letter to the City Council and a second individual contacted the Parks and Recreation Department,” City Manager John Schneiger wrote in a memo to the council. “Both individuals expressed that they were unable

to utilize the Recreation and Aquatic Center in their scooters due to the weight of the doors.” Initially, Parks and Recreation Director Elaine Smith searched for sponsors or grants to pay for the access improvements. The city is facing budget cutbacks because of falling tax revenues. When no sponsors came forward, city officials scoured the city’s fiscal 2012 budget for options. They found $6,500 that could be transferred from money already set aside for special purpose equipment into the department’s maintenance fund. “Two handrails are currently set up in a handicap-accessible bathroom stall in a poolside bathroom,” says Smith. Meanwhile, officials are looking for ways to attract more members to the recreation center, and upgrades will make the center more ADA friendly.

The Gift of Music in the Last Stage of Life By Diane Galemmo For centuries, music and medicine have been linked together. The Greeks believed that music had the power to heal the body and the soul. When used by a music therapist, it can promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Music Therapy has been used by Rabbi Aaron Lever, a chaplain at Gulfside Regional Hospice in New Port Richey since March 2012, when he started Gulfside’s new “Heart Strings” program. His therapy focuses on an instrument called the reverie harp; its restful, dreamy sound was the inspiration for its name. Rabbi Lever incorporated the reverie harp as part of his spiritual care visits and his patients love it. Lever was introduced to the harp by another Hospice Chaplain at a National Association of Jewish Chaplains Conference in January. The harp was developed by Jerry Brown, owner of Musicmakers in Stillwater, MN, and designed by company general man-

ager, Matt Edwards, in collaboration with Australian music thanatologist Peter Roberts. (Thanatology is the study of death and dying, especially in its psychological and social aspects.) Peter Roberts says, “Emotional and spiritual healing can lead a patient to be more engaged in their recovery, or face death with a greater sense of peace and dignity.” Lever is just one of a growing number of caregivers who include musical therapy for their patients’ emotional and spiritual well being. The 22-string harp is beautifully shaped, rather like an egg. It resembles the 17th century lute, minus the neck. It is comfortable and lightweight to hold even for the most frail individuals. It has a soothing, “angelic” sound. It can be plucked like a traditional harp (one can even use a pencil) and what makes it unique is that the strings are tuned to a pentatonic scale, so that no matter which strings are played together, they will be harmonious; and players love feeling the vibrations through the wood. The Reverie Harp

is fast becoming a musthave tool for music therapists, visitation ministers/chaplains, activity directors, and nursing homes caregivers. Lever, who has had 12 years of piano lessons, was intrigued when he first saw and played the harp. He says, “You don’t play specific songs. It’s more a matter of creating a flowing musical pattern. All the notes harmonize with each other. Practically anyone can play the Matt Edwards (left) & Jerry Brown instrument with little practice – even someone lying have been playing the reverie harp, I in bed can hold it and play it. Patients have had patients who really enjoyed tell me they have experienced a sense of peace and comfort after hearing the hearing me play,” said Lever. “Patients tell me they have experienced a sense music. The music of the harp calms of peace and comfort after hearing the the spirit and soothes the soul.” music.” Because it is so easy, patients can Lever talks about visiting a particbe invited to give it a try themselves, ular patient’s home where the carethough most are more than happy to giver had a stressful day. Rabbi Aaron Lever Lever pluck soothing sounds from the harp helped both the caregiver and the patient to relax. Lever says, “I’ve also used the harp when a patient is actively dying. Hearing is the last sense we usually have at the end of life. When the family is gathered around the patient, it is very meaningful to the family and the patient; the music is very comforting. I’ve even seen the music giving people an opportunity to grieve.” Lever was with another patient

who wanted to hear music during the last moments of his life. “He was having difficulty breathing. His daughter who was with him had asked me to play. The patient was given medication, but upon hearing the harp, his breathing improved even before the medication took effect. For the patient the music became a significant part of his death experience.” Another patient says, “It makes me feel joyful. The music is like being hugged.” For some patients, it evokes memories. One man, after hearing Lever play his harp, decided to get out his ukulele and start playing again for the first time in seven years. Lever says, “I use it often with dementia patients, many of whom cannot communicate but they can still enjoy the reverie harp in the present moment, even though they’ve lost their sense of the past and the future.” Seemingly apropos are the words of Hans Christian Andersen (Danish author noted for his children’s stories), “Where words fail, music speaks.” For more information about Musicmakers’ reverie harp visit www.harpkit.com.
