Announcing New Contact Information From The Editor Kim Thomas Thanks to our readers and our advertisers we have enjoyed tremendous growth here at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and along with that growth have come upgrades to our website and email system. We cherish the emails and letters we receive from readers and depend upon the information we receive to keep our news briefs interesting and the community calendar up-to-date. With four publications, each with two email addresses – one for ads and one for editorial content – we decided to simplify things for ourselves and our readers and advertisers. Plus a recent problem with Yahoo underscored the need for a change. However, that problem did warm our hearts because of the great outpouring of support and concern that came from advertisers. We’d like to share what happened simply to warn others about possible email hacking. Our General Manager Jim O’Reilly has a great relationship with our advertisers, many of whom he has worked with for about eight years, and when his email account was

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

hacked and an email went out to his entire address book indicating that he was stuck in a foreign country and his personal effects and travel documents had been stolen, including his passport and identification, and that he needed assistance. It looked like it was sent from him but it was not. This email was sent out at 5:42 a.m. I saw it when I first woke up and at first thought that Jim was playing a joke on me, but when I saw the time it was sent I knew better. Even with his great sense of humor, I knew he wouldn’t be playing any jokes that early! I called Jim around 7 a.m. to let him know and he had already received numerous emails from concerned clients offering to help him. Jim couldn’t believe how many people reached out to him. This really drove home a couple of points to us. First, we have a fantastic, caring community and clientele. And, second, we needed to implement a more secure communication. If this ever happens to you, the first thing to do is change your password. To keep your account safe, it is recommended to change your pass-

word every couple of months. Email, Website & Story Submissions The editorial email that we are now using for editorial submissions such as press releases, calendar events and community-related stories is: editorialdept@neighborhoodnewsfl.com. For advertising information and ad submissions, please email: info@neighborhoodnewsfl.com. You can also submit stories for consideration and calendar items directly to us via our website, www.neighborhoodnewsfl.com. Once you are on the website, click on the area you are interested in and it will bring up the publication for your area. In the lower left corner, you will see three tabs: Submit a Story, Advertising Info and Contact Us. Jim O’Reilly would like to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who offered to help him. Hopefully, he will never be in a real situation like that but if he is, I’m certain he could turn to his family for help rather than our clients. It is nice to know you care, though! We look forward to hearing from you.

Come and join the Angel Family! See what some of our loyal customers have to say! HERE WE GROW AGAIN! a delight to discover a cleaning agency that trains their girls to truly W hat clean! The "angels" deal with all those little things and places which are often overlooked by others. They are thorough, friendly, and aim to please - even adjusting their choice of cleaning products to accommodate my allergies. I am so happy to have found them. Marilou Reed Villa Rosa, Lutz The Cleaning Angel not only does a great job cleaning my house they also take great care of my 2 dogs. When I come home after a long day at the office, my house not only looks fantastic it smells clean. The girls pay attention to every detail so you can rest assured that your house is super clean - not just a surface clean that you get from some other companies. They go above & beyond the call of duty. One time my dog wasn't feeling well and the girls called me immediately. I really appreciated that special treatment. Most other companies would have just left and not said anything. Monica Gobeli Oakstead, Land O Lakes The Cleaning Angel has been coming to my home twice a month for about a year now. In my opinion, they provide great cleanings and tend to get areas that I have given little thought to. However, the biggest plus for me really has been having the same team or at least one familiar person on the team come. I have a great Team with Heather leading and they are always happy to address any questions or concerns I may have. Donna and Sandy are great and always communicate with me. It is my pleasure to have The Cleaning Angels helping me out. There is nothing like a shiny faucet! Shaney Nadel West Chase, Tampa I originally hired The Cleaning Angel to do a deep cleaning last May after reading testimonials from other clients in the local newspaper. Donna sent a 3person crew to my house and they spent most of Saturday cleaning. In addition to the normal dusting, vacuuming and mopping, they cleaned all the blinds, the baseboards, the tops of every cabinet and other hard to reach places, wiped down every knick-knack (and I have many) and got stains out in the bathroom and kitchen that I thought were there for good. I don't think my house had been that clean since we moved in. I was so impressed that I immediately talked to Donna about having them back to do regular cleanings every 2 weeks. One of the smartest decisions I ever made. I have used house cleaners on and off for 25 years and can honestly say this is the best company that I have ever worked with. With other companies I've used, inevitably, the work quality started to deteriorate after the first few cleanings or there was inconsistent quality across different crews that came in. I have not seen that with The Cleaning Angel. The teams have been prompt, courteous, and professional. I cannot recommend The Cleaning Angel enough. Clara Broad Villa Rosa, Lutz

I've used The Cleaning Angel for at least one year. I've found them to be professional, hard working ladies. They call days before to tell you the time they will arrive on the cleaning day. That's important to me. Best thing of all they do a good job. Debbie Pugh Lake Keystone, Odessa After trying and firing several cleaning companies, a neighbor told me about The Cleaning Angels. I have been very pleased with the service they provide. They are professional, dependable and do a great job. I highly recommend them! JoAnne Czarnowski West Chase, Tampa

In the past, I have used several cleaning services but none can compare with the crew I have now, The Cleaning Angel. They have been cleaning my home for over seven years and I have never been more satisfied. Their team leader and trainer is Ileah. She arrives with a cheerful demeanor and sets about her work diligently. I look forward to her visits. The Cleaning Angel always go that extra mile, such as dusting pictures and wiping window seals. No task is too small or too large for this cleaning team. They are extremely trustworthy and reliable. When they leave, I love the smell of cleanliness that permeates my home. Judy Conforte Ivy Lake Estates, Land o Lakes We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we ever got by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna; she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her company would be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be delivered because it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message was loud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has provided the phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. They are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done. Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me! Esther and Michael Halman Crescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs Thank you Donna for sending your girls that do outstanding work. They are very pleasant, professional, and extremely careful around my furniture. Have tried different services and cleaning ladies in the past and they were always breaking my things. Your girls come in, go through my home with efficiency and I have been very pleased with the outcome. Marie Goldberg Fox Hollow, Trinity

The Brass Tap Redefines the Neighborhood Bar By Dara Tucker In October 2008 three business partners opened the first Brass Tap at The Shoppes of Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel. Two years later they opened one in Brandon, and in March 2012, Trinity was lucky enough to get their own neighborhood Brass Tap. At any given time you’ll find 40 – 60 different craft beers on tap at The Brass Tap; 25 – 30 of them are staple beers that they always carry, and 30 – 35 beers change, allowing for a varied experience every visit. They also have hundreds of imported or local craft beer in bottles (which can be purchased for carry out, too), in addition to premium wines and cigars. The Brass Tap has great relationships with brewers and distributors which benefits customers who would normally not have access to such an amazing variety of specialty microbrews locally. General Manager Jessica Buchta has created a feel to the upscale beer bar that’s very much in tune with our area. She started with great hospitality. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful; wanting to make sure you find the perfect beer for your liking. All you have to do is name a couple of beers you know you already like, and they’ll describe the flavor profile of new beers you might enjoy. If you’re still undecided they’ll let you sample a suggestion to help you commit. When you visit most afternoons there is a very laidback, relaxed atmosphere to the bar. You’ll find all ages relaxing on the patio or inside cooling off with a beer after a day at work or a round of golf. Although it doesn’t serve food, Brass Tap has partnered with local restaurants such as Buffalo Wild

10

Wings, Five Guys, Ichiban Sushi and Brick Oven Pizzeria, all of which deliver to the bar. Jessica says that even if you’ve made something at home and want it with your beer you can bring it in. If you’re looking for a night out, The Brass Tap is also the place to go. Local bands such as The Sunsetters, One Mile Final and Tone Granade are in full swing starting at 8 p.m. on Thursdays and at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, when the bar is alive and energetic. If it’s possible for a bar to be both upbeat and relaxed at the same time, The Brass Tap has mastered it. One of the great new beers that The Brass Tap introduced me to when I visited is the locally brewed Big Storm’s Wavemaker, which is amber ale that is made right in Odessa. Big Storm’s owners Clay Yarn and Mike Bishop enjoyed The Brass Tap when the first one opened in Wesley Chapel, and now their own beer is being served here. Clay explains, “The Brass Tap gives us a great place to display our beer. Our brewery is right across the street in the West Pasco Industrial Park. We’ve always had a good working relationship with The Brass Tap, and we wanted our first beer tapped there. It was a natural choice— they’ve always been very supportive of us even when we were getting started.” Specials on Craft Beers When you visit you’ll find there are plenty of daily specials. Happy hour is Monday-Friday, 3-7 p.m., with $1.50 off all drafts. Monday and Wednesdays are hospitality industry nights, when if you wear your shirt, bring in your paystub or I.D., you’ll receive half off all drafts and select wines starting at 9 p.m. On Tuesdays

The Brass Tap's friendly staff can provide recommendations to suit your taste. Brew Crew customers enjoy 25 percent off draft beers on Sunday. Brew Crew Members received 25 percent off all bottles, and Thursday is ladies night with two for one on select drafts and house wines starting at 9 p.m. Each Sunday five different select drafts are chosen for only $3.50 each. Once again Brew Crew Members save on Sunday when they receive 25 percent off all drafts. If you’re not familiar with Brew Crew, it’s a loyalty program that costs $15 to join, and with your initial signup you receive your first official Brew Crew T-shirt. You receive one point for each of the 300 different craft beers The Brass Tap offers, and you are rewarded as you earn points. At 50 points, you are a “Rookie” and you receive a new shirt and a $10 Brass Tap gift card (as well as the honors of your name on their board in the bar). The next milestone, 100 points, advances you to “Aficionado” and you receive a new shirt and $25 gift card. At 200 points, you are a true “Beer Snob” and are awarded with a shirt commemorating your status and $50 gift card. And once you’ve reached 300 points, you are a Brew Crew “Beer Guru” and will receive a $200 bar tab! After you’ve signed up, you present your Brew Crew Membership

card when you cash out, and your receipt will show each of the different beers you’ve tried so far. Other specials include a customer appreciation party with half off all drafts every time The Brass Tap gets another 250 likes on Facebook. They are also still honoring ten percent off your check each time you check in at Brass Tap on Facebook while you’re there. With back to school in swing they have just started a teacher special on Fridays from 3-7 p.m. which includes 25 percent off all drafts and house wines with your school ID. This football season The Brass Tap has the NFL is package, with beer specials during the game. An on-going monthly special is the Brewery of the Month. Each month The Brass Tap works with a brewer to provide three great beers by that brewer at a special price. On Fridays they’re often able to tap a rare keg from the featured brewery. Jessica says, “It’s an easy way to learn about different beers from a brewery each month. In August we featured Avery and in September Boulder is our Brewery of the Month.” I tried the Avery Maharaja, which was golden in color and had a light

just want to try a different beer, the Brewery of the Month is a great deal on a craft beer. The Trinity Brass Tap is already becoming known in the area as the go-to bar for holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day when they have too much fun to contain it to inside the bar alone, and rope off part of the parking lot. This fall they will be celebrating in a similar fashion with Taptoberfest which will include live music, food, games and beer on Friday, October 19 and Saturday, October 20. With hundreds of beers, great hospitality and daily specials, The Brass Tap of Trinity has redefined the neighborhood bar. Come visit them at 10700 SR 54, near Five Guys, Mon. – Fri., 3 p.m. – 2 a.m.; Sat., 12 p.m. – 2 a.m., and 12 p.m. – 12 a.m. on Sun. 1 Spine Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Treats the Underlying Causes of Pain By Marcy Sanford Dr. Jorge Santana at 1 Spine Chiropractic & Rehabilitation stresses the fact that people should not have aches and pains. “Headaches and pains are not normal,” says Dr. Santana. “If you are feeling pain, you need to determine the cause of the problem. At 1 Spine Chiropractic we discuss your daily life and stress and examine all the potential causes of your pain to determine how to get rid of it so you can start leading a happier, healthier, more active life again. If you’ve been in an accident that is causing you pain, you need to come see us as soon as you feel pain. The sooner we are able to find the problem, the quicker we will be able to help you.” How Can 1 Spine Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Help You? The most common reason people visit a chiropractor is because of back pain either caused from an injury or

14

accident. “I came to Dr. Santana recently and have been more than pleased,” says Steven Waskey. “I crashed my dirt bike a couple years ago and wrapped my back around a tree. Dr. Santana came by recommendation from a friend, and within three months, I already started feeling noticeable differences. Arry’s Roofing Services Shares the Advantages of Owning a Metal Roof By Katie Thomas James "Arry" Housh has been actively involved in the roofing company for thirty years. Alongside his wife Becky Housh and with the help of their two sons Stephen and Matthew, he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing, a company dedicated to providing quality craftsmanship and exceptional customer service. The Housh family's dedication has enabled Arry's Roofing to expand their small, honorable and trustworthy family-run business into the well-known and trusted company it is today; servicing residential, commercial and industrial projects with value and integrity. I recently spoke to Matt regarding metal roofing and the benefits it provides homeowners. Arry’s Roofing fully supports the advantages of metal roofing and is a specialist in metal roofing. Additionally, Arry’s in-house custom sheet metal shop allows the metal roofing specialists to customize your roof to be an exact fit for your house and your designs. Matt says, “Metal roofing is more

18

of a craftsmanship and an art, similar to tile. In the early 2000s we saw the advantages of metal roofing and started our metal roofing shop, trained our guys specifically in metal roofing and began to create a reputation of being metal roofing specialists.” Metal Advantages: Metal roofing is known to be initially more expensive than other roofing types at first glance, but in the long run metal roofing can save homeowners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increase the resale value of your home. Matt explains that the average lifespan of a non-metal roof is seventeen years; whereas metal roofing is proven to last 2-3 times longer with fewer repairs than other types of roofing materials. When installed by qualified and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than 50 years with little maintenance. Matt adds that a metal roof is extremely beneficial, especially in Florida, because there is no other roof composite that is as strong and as durable as a

metal roof, which if installed properly can effectively withstand the harsh Florida winds and storms. If you are a homeowner and are seeking out a way to reduce the price of your energy bill and would like to build a roof with energy-saving material, Arry’s Roofing recommends you look into getting a metal roof. Metal roofing is economically sustainable and better for the environment than many traditional types of materials, such as petroleum-based shingles. The installation of reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40 percent in cooling costs. Arry's Roofing is proactive and

innovative, keeping up to date in the industry by furthering their education regularly. Matt says, “We use new products that are safe. By keeping on top of what is offered, we are able to bring our customers cleaner, better and safer products." The company has all the knowledge necessary to help you find the right metal roof that will not only look beautiful on your home, but will also be an asset in saving money and cutting energy costs. Arry’s Roofing has answers to any questions regarding the advantages of metal roofing and is prepared to help you make the best decisions regarding your home’s roof.

Tara says, “It was during that time that Jon discovered that he truly enjoyed the art of painting, and he naturally has the finesse that it takes to do a great job.” When his father retired, Jon was excited to take what he’d learned from his father and apply his own business acumen and his knowledge of environmentally-friendly products to start his own business. SAT AND ACT UPDATE

Tests That Can Determine Your Student’s Educational Future By Dr. Wayne Adams “Hi Sue. You look a little concerned,” said Linda. “What’s on your mind this morning?” Responding with a worried tone in her voice, Sue answered, “My son is a senior this year in high school and my daughter is a junior. Now I am hearing about SAT’s, ACT’s, and PSAT’s. What are these tests? Why are these tests important? What do they do? Can I help them get ready in some way? I need to find out. I am really confused!” Looking thoughtful for a minute, Linda added, “Now that you mention it, I have wondered the same thing about Mike and Susan. Mike will be a sophomore, and Susan a freshman, in high school. My worry is more about the FCAT. Just yesterday, I heard about a new ‘End of Course” exam for every high school course. If a student does not pass the EOC, no matter what a

32

student’s grade in the course, that student fails and has to repeat the class. That’s a little scary. Have you heard anything about this?”

LET’S FIND SOME ANSWERS Every fall, conversations like this happen across the country as parents think about college admissions, scholarships, and helping their students do their best in high school. Let’s find some answers about the SAT, ACT, PSAT, FCAT, and EOC. Our conclusion will talk more about what you as a parent can do so your student can do their best on these examinations. THE SAT The SAT is a nationally standardized test given seven times a year by the College Board. Three tests are given in the fall, and four in the spring. The three major test sections are Writing, Critical Reading, and Mathematics. Within each section are three individual tests, and there is

one unidentified experimental test, for a total of ten test sections requiring about four hours of testing time. Scores range between 200 and 800 for each section, with a maximum score for all three sections of 2400. These tests are only given at authorized testing centers such as designated high schools, require a reservation online at collegeboard. com, and require a normal fee of $50 to take the full test. Results are published in a password protected account on the internet, and are also mailed to the student, 3 - 4 weeks after the test. The stated purpose of the SAT is to assess a student’s ability to do succeed in college. In other words, it is a “predictive” test. The College Board says there is a definite correlation between scoring levels on the SAT and later academic success in college. Most colleges believe this statement, so they consider SAT scores seriously in determining

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • www.NeighborhoodNewsFL.com SEPTEMBER 2012

whether to admit a student compared to other applications. Normally, the major factors in an admission decision are class standing, GPA, results on standardized test(s), quality of essay and writing skills, and distinctive community or other activities. A student can take the SAT examination as many times as desired. One important feature is that a student can “pick and choose” the best score in each section, and later submit only these scores to colleges. The college will not know these scores came from different examinations. Also, there is no time limit currently on when scores can be counted – meaning a high score for a ninth grader can be used when that student is a senior. The next three SAT exams are scheduled for Oct. 6th, Nov. 3rd, and Dec. 1st. require a normal fee of $48 to take the full test. Results are published in a password protected account on the internet, and are also mailed to the student, 3 - 4 weeks after the test. The stated purpose of the ACT is to assess a student’s current level of educational achievement and their ability to succeed in college.

THE ACT The ACT is a nationally standardized test given six times a year by American College Testing. Three tests are given in the fall, and three in the spring. The next exams are on Sept. 8th, Oct. 27th, and Dec. 8th. The four required sections are English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Essay is an optional fifth section, which all students should also take at the same time because, if a college requires it, the student must retake a whole examination to do so. Scores range between 1 - 36 for each section. The “composite” is the average score of the four required sections, and ranges from 1 – 36. These tests are only given at authorized testing centers such as designated high schools, require a reservation online at act.org, and

SAT AND ACT ARE VERY DIFFERENT On the surface, it may seem that the SAT and ACT are very similar. In fact, they have major differences. For example: the SAT has different requirements for the essay; is more dependent on vocabulary; is not as dependent on reading passages and evaluations; and math is easier because many formulas are given to students at the beginning of the math sections, problems are not as advanced, trigonometry is not included, and it does not have testing in science. The ACT is the opposite. Students with stronger mathematical skills and logical thinking tend to do better on the ACT. Students with stronger verbal skills and intuitive thinking tend to do better on the SAT. THE PSAT The PSAT is far more than just

preparation for the SAT. It is the only national test used to determine if a student is to determine eligibility and qualification for the National Merit Scholarship Program that can include major National Merit Scholarships. Colleges give major additional scholarships to National Merit Scholars.

THE FCAT The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is given to all tenth graders in public high schools in the spring. If a high school student does not pass the FCAT or an acceptable substitute before the end of their senior year, that student will not graduate. Scoring an 18 on and the Reading or the Math sections of the ACT, or a 280 in Reading and a 370 in Math on the SAT, fulfill this requirement as well. The FCAT is being phased out by the EOC in Florida public high schools. THE EOC (End-of-Course Assessments) EOC testing has already started in public high schools in mathematics. Shortly, this testing will be required for reading, writing, science, and history. Examinations are taken

during one week at the completion of a full course. Students have all the time needed (normally 80 minutes or less) to complete the test in one sitting, everything is computerized, and the student must pass the test to receive credit for the course. EOC’s are not required for students with certifications for longer times on tests. To talk with Dr. Adams about your student doing their best on the SAT and ACT, contact him at (727) 253-0639 or email wwa0811@ gmail.com. Dr. Adams offers FREE, PREDICTIVE SAT AND ACT TESTS that can help you know where your student might score on a full examination. A few days after the test, you will receive an emailed report with individual and composite scores, scores in Vocabulary and Grammar. This timed test can be taken at home or at class.

“Nelson Dentistry” Continued from page 1 who have been with him the whole time he’s been practicing and has seen some of their needs change. He’s happy that dentistry has made advances to help those issues: Sleep Better Florida If you are one of the 20 million Americans who suffer from sleep apnea or severe snoring, Dr. Nelson can help you get a better night’s sleep. Up until now, the only option sleep apnea sufferers had was surgery or a bulky and obtrusive CPAP machine. In fact, about 60% of people who are put on these machines are not comfortable with them and stop using them. Dr. Nelson works with local physicians and sleep centers to determine the severity of your sleep apnea. If appropriate, he will then fit you for a compact, comfortable oral appliance similar to a mouth guard. The appliance is designed to position the jaw forward, keeping the airway open during sleep. Dr. Nelson customizes for each individual to ensure a comfortable fit. Since the appliance easily con-

forms to the contours of your mouth, you’ll likely become used to wearing it in a few short days. After you’ve been fitted, Dr. Nelson will send you home with a portable machine to track data during the night while you are sleeping. Using this information, Dr. Nelson will be able to determine whether the oral appliance therapy is working effectively. Dr. Nelson has seen a high success rate with the oral appliance. His patient David reported sleeping better after the first night of wearing the device, “Every morning I have woken up feeling refreshed. I was not able to use the CPAP machine but would definitely recommend (the oral appliance) to other patients. It is very comfortable and it works.” If left untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health problems including high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure, diabetes and depression. If you think you suffer from sleep apnea, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to make an appointment with Dr. Nelson today to see if an oral appliance can help you.

The laser fiber used in the procedure is only about as wide as three human hairs and is inserted between the gum tissue and tooth where it painlessly removes the noxious elements that cause gum disease. Patients will see results in just two, two-hour sessions. You will not have to worry about bleeding, stitches because your gums have not been cut. You will recover quickly because the laser can seal blood vessels, lymphatics and nerve endings. Your tissue still needs time to regenerate and heal but the healing time can be much quicker than with traditional gum surgery.
