Let’s be honest, being a parent is the hardest, most wonderful thing you’ve ever done. But hard gets harder when your child is diagnosed with a learning disability or disorder. The label in itself can be hard to swallow, even when you know that a label doesn’t make a child and even when you know that a label doesn’t make any difference in who your child really is, what they can become or what they can achieve. That said, it can still be hard to know what to do next with regard to your child’s individual success at home, in school and in life in general. When your child is diagnosed or

given a label of ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, autism, Tourette’s, an Asperger’s Spectrum disorder, a learning disability or a processing disorder, it’s hard to know what to do. For parents and families this can be a scary and overwhelming time, and while these issues have become almost commonplace over the last two decades, the answer to the root of the problem has not been agreed upon. The popular although controversial approach to “fixing” it, however, is to use modern medicine. There is another option. Brain Balance Achievement Centers offer a medicine-free, education-based Brain Balance Program that comprehensively helps each child reach their See “Brain Balance” on page 62.

Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center Hosts Inaugural 5K Race to Educate On November 2, 2013, Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center will be hosting a 5K / 1-mile race to benefit educational programs in the Pasco County area. More specifically, the race will benefit two programs – the Advanced Placement program and the Interact Club – that are close to the hearts of Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center owners Mike and Christine Gilmore because their daughter Courtney was a very involved high school student in those programs. Mike and Christine are asking the public to join in the race to help honor Courtney. “Our daughter, Courtney and her friend Kimberlee, were in both of these programs giving us insight into the drive and cost necessary to excel in academics. On July 2, 2013, both young ladies were taken from us in a tragic car accident. We would like to fulfill their ambition and determina-

tion by donating proceeds* of this race to the programs they were so passionately involved in. “Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States created by the College Board offering collegelevel curriculum and examinations to high school students. American colleges often grant placement and course credit to students who obtain high scores above a certain number on the examinations. Unfortunately, a burden is placed upon so many bright students because much of the cost goes directly to the student for books and supplies. We want to take that burden from the student so that they can focus on their studies alone. “The Interact Club is an international organization of service and social clubs for young people of secondary school age that fosters leadership and responsible citizenship and

promotes international understanding and peace.” Mike & Christine Gilmore’s business, Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center, will host the run and is seeking sponsorships. Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center is located at 10720 SR 54, Suite 105 in Trinity, FL 34655. Please call 727-807-3295 for more information about registering for the 5K / 1-mile race or for sponsorship information. There will be a sign-up party on September 14, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Precise Nutrition & Fitness Center. Sign up that day and get a free smoothie! *A ledger will be made available to all those requesting to show the use of proceeds.

Get your Game On at the Varsity Club in Trinity By Julie Kanehl It’s September, and we’re back to school, the football season has begun, and it’s time to get serious about three things: family fun, excellent food and some serious sports. You’ll find all three at The Varsity Club in Trinity, located at 3523 Little Road, just north of S.R. 54. Whether you’re looking for a place for your big league or just the VIPs in your life, there’s something delicious on the menu for you and your team at the Varsity Club. The Varsity Club in Trinity is the third of its kind, but the first in Pasco County. Already becoming a fan favorite, The Varsity Club of Trinity follows in its siblings’ footprints by putting families first and by supporting youth sports at our local schools. The first Varsity Club restaurant opened in Clearwater in 1989, at the corner of U.S. 19 and Sunset Point Road, while the second Varsity Club opened in East Lake at the Brooker Creek Plaza in 2001. Both locations continue to support their community and are a home base to many families.

10

Drew Bartenope, Regional Manager of the Varsity Club in Trinity said, “We really focus on families and we are huge supporters of youth sports. Our other locations supported the Countryside Cougars and the East Lake Eagles, and the Trinity location is a big supporter of the Trinity Mustangs. We are all about supporting our community.” Jody Mohlar, owner of the Varsity Club restaurants, opened the Trinity location in March this year and already our Varsity Club has become the go-to place for tasty food, giant portions and their family-friendly atmosphere. The interior dining room is open and spacious, with tables and booths to accommodate parties both large and small. The outdoor patio is petfriendly and is the ideal place to enjoy live music twice a week when the weather permits. The Cheers-style, full-liquor bar offers ample seating, daily drink specials, and 20 taps on deck. Happy hour is every day from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. and all day on Monday. That makes Monday look better in any playbook!

Far more than a sports bar, Varsity Club is totally family-focused. For the kiddos, there are games to play, TVs to watch, menus to color, and a really fun-loving and patient staff that caters to families with kids of all ages. Bartenope said, “We have all of the sports packages, college games, NFL, baseball, hockey – we show them all. It’s really great for those who want to watch more than one game at a time.” That’s right, sports fans; they have more than 25 TVs, including 3 big-screens! How perfect is that for my Fantasy Football League friends? Seriously! If you haven’t been to the new Varsity Club in Trinity yet, what are you waiting for? The Menu Scores! The Varsity Club menu scores,

SEPTEMBER 2013

and it scores big every time. Regardless of how your team played, everyone wins when you eat at Varsity Club because it’s the great food that takes it home at the end of the day. This heavyweight of a menu features everything from appetizers and salads to burgers, wraps and sandwiches. Varsity Club even offers homemade pizzas, all of which are cooked to order. The hardest part is choosing what to order. There are 15 items on the kids’ menu alone, plus there’s even a Pee-Wee Menu that features baby food for the littlest benchwarmers on your team.

There are so many big leaguers to choose from, that you may just have to come for lunch and dinner for a few weeks in a row just to catch up with the rest of the neighborhood.

Margherita Pizza

Boneless Wings

Diamondback Burger

When asked what the number one seller is at Varsity Club, Bartenope answered immediately, “Our boneless wings. They’re never frozen, cut fresh, and they’re the signature dish for us. We went through 20,000 pounds of boneless wings at the East Lake Varsity Club last year.” He adds, “Our wings all come with celery and our homemade blue cheese, too, which is cool.” Christy Swift said, “The boneless

chicken wings at Varsity Club are awesome.” Speaking of including things that other places make you pay for, most of the meals on the menu come with fries and they’re still under $10. You can’t beat that for solid, American food where the whole family is welcomed and attended to. All of your favorites are on this menu. Whether you’re in the mood

for a burger just the way you like it, or a tender, marinated chicken breast sandwich, grilled and topped with your favorites and served with fries, they’ve got all the regulars and more at Varsity Club. The daily specials at the Varsity Club in Trinity are pretty inventive. My favorite is the “Wrappy Meal.” Bartenope had to explain that one to me. He said, “It’s pretty much everything you’d get in a happy meal, except for the toy, put into a wrap! That’s the fries and everything!” Another popular item on the menu is the Varsity Club Dip, which is a roast beef sandwich that is piled high, covered in melted provolone cheese and served on a toasted garlic hoagie roll. Served with homemade au jus and fries, The Varsity Club Dip is just one of the many sandwiches on the “Hall of Fame” portion of the menu. Another Hall of Famer that deserves a shout-out is The “Cubbie,” which is a 1/4 pound hotdog served on a hoagie. Not a lot of places around that serve a good “dog!”

Team Reel Recap Here’s what you can expect the rest of the season: It’s Happy Hour all day on Mondays, and on Tuesdays the kids eat free while the big kids can play Tuesday Trivia! Wednesdays are the perfect time to take your pooch out to eat because pets (who dine on the patio) eat free from the pet menu (which is available 7 days a week). The end of the week is a blast at Varsity Club, because Thursdays and Saturdays offer live music and Friday night is karaoke night. Curbside Pickup is a great option for busy nights – just put your order in and pull up to the curb between 5 p.m.–9 p.m., and the Varsity Club staff will bring your order right out to your car. You can’t make dinner any easier than that! Of course, you can always order Varsity Club food to go, and their food makes for great game night fare. So, whether you’re dining in or taking out, out on a date or bringing the whole team, you’ll find that the great food and the fun atmosphere at Varsity Club is tough to beat. The Varsity Club of Trinity is located at 3523 Little Road, just north of Walmart’s Little Rd. entrance. They are open Sunday – Thursday, 11 a.m.–Midnight, and 11 a.m.–2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and until the big game ends on game nights. For more information or to order Curbside Pickup, call 727-232-2944. You can also visit them online at www.trinityvarsityclub.com, and like their page on facebook.

TRINITY FANS AGREE, IT’S THE PERFECT MATCH! Silk® Chocolate Almond Met With Extraordinary Response Silk® Chocolate Almond, the first ever national dairyfree, almond milk-based frozen yogurt option, has proven immensely popular in its first week with TCBY reporting strong sales across the system. Fans in Trinity have spoken, and have helped make Silk Chocolate Almond the company’s most successful product launch since TCBY was the first to bring Greek frozen yogurt to the market in 2012, continuing the brand’s commitment to innovation in the frozen yogurt industry. Due to the immense popularity and overwhelmingly positive support of Silk Chocolate Almond, some locations including Pasco County have already sold out of the new product less

14

than a week after it hit stores. “We couldn’t be happier with the incredible response by old and new TCBY fans for this innovative new flavor,” said Famous Brands International CEO Neal Courtney. “We knew we had something special when we teamed up with Silk and we’re happy to see that our fans are enjoying our perfect match.” Part of the popularity of Silk Chocolate Almond can be attributed to the fact that for the first time in the company’s history and in the industry there is a non-dairy, plant-based option allowing guests with dietary restrictions the ability to enjoy TCBY’s famous product. Residents of Pasco and Pinellas Counties who were previously unable to enjoy TCBY due to milk allergies can now dig in to Silk Chocolate Almond. “The response we’ve seen so far has been incredible,” said Jenifer SilarMills. “We’re reaching a new group of customers and our regular customers love the new flavor. It’s going

fast, but we’ll have more real soon!” While fans of new Silk Chocolate Almond may fear that their new favorite flavor is running out, they can rest easy knowing that more of the popular new item will be available by the end of August. TCBY and Silk are celebrating their “perfect match” with “The Perfect Match” campaign on social media. Fans are encouraged to join in the celebration by posting to social media, utilizing the #TCBYPerfectMatch hashtag, and by entering the “You + Beach = The Perfect Match” sweepstakes for the chance to win a trip for two to a Caribbean destination of their choice, including airfare, three-night hotel accommodations, and $500 spending cash. The sweepstakes launches in conjunction with Silk® Chocolate Almond and runs through August 22nd, 2013. In addition to the Caribbean getaway, weekly winners will receive iPad Minis and daily winners will receive $25 TCBY gift cards. More information is avail-

The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is a Good Choice for Your Family By Julie Kanehl When you have a baby, everything changes, and suddenly it’s so important to have a doctor for your child – someone that you can trust and turn to when the most important person in your life is sick. As your family grows, your children will be at the doctor a lot for checkups, physicals, immunizations, and regular runof-the-mill childhood illnesses – in other words, you’ll be there a lot! That’s why it’s so important to have a doctor at the ready that takes the time to know you and your family. Located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Boulevard, The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is convenient to Trinity, East Lake, New Port Richey and Tarpon Springs. Created by a husband and wife doctor team whose practice and family have grown together within our community for the last 16 years, The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group is a great choice for families. Their beautiful office is on the second floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building, and their waiting room

is divided so that children who are well don’t have to sit with the children who are sick. This is so nice for parents who are taking their children in for well visits, physicals and shots. The friendly staff makes everyone feel comfortable, and they make an effort to value everyone’s time by seeing their patients as soon as they can. Meet the Doctors! Douglass M. Hasell, M.D. graduated with honors from The University of California in Santa Barbara before receiving his M.D. at The Medical University of South Carolina. After earning his M.D., he completed his Residency at the University of California in Irvine, where he met his wife, Thuy T. Pham, M.D., who was also completing her Residency in Pediatrics. Dr. Pham’s background is quite impressive. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, and earned her M.D. at the University of California in San Diego in 1988. Dr. Pham is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, and is the only pediatrician who is also a Board Certified Lactation Consultant in the Tampa Bay Area. Dr. Pham is an expert at helping new nurs-

Board Certified Pediatricians and are Fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Drs. Hasell and Pham have an incredible background that includes experience overseas where they had to be extremely resourceful working with children who were extremely sick. That experience, on top of their formal education, and their practical education as parents, make them an amazing pediatric team. Over the years, the staff has grown to include Dr. Sheridan Hernandez, M.D. who was born in the U.K. and moved to the U.S. when she was a teenager. Dr. Hernandez graduated Summa Cum Laude from the City College of New York before earning her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. She completed her pediatric residency training at Columbia Medical Center in New York City. As parents themselves, the doctors at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group truly understand their role in your family’s life. Speaking of families, Dr. Hernandez’s daughter, Nathalie, is a very popular person at the practice, because she was recently a contestant on NBC’s The Voice! Dr. Hasell and

Pham and their children are also very musical. In fact Dr. Hasell and his children have a band called Triple Haze, and this fall Triple Haze along with Nathalie Hernandez will be performing to live audiences, including a fundraiser benefit promoting Skin Cancer screenings. Christopher Pope, ARNP, CPNP, is also popular around the practice, especially with the kids! His upbeat and positive attitude is just one of the things that families who go to The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are talking about. Chris Pope is a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with his B.S. in nursing before earning his Masters in Nursing at the University of Missouri in St. Louis. Chris has specialized in pediatrics since 1996 including three years at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida and four years at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. One of the things that Chris Pope facilitates is a great program at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group called Fit4AllKids Weight Management and Fitness. This is a program developed by All Children’s Hospital aimed at helping families change the way they look at nutrition. The obesity epidemic is real,

and it’s affecting our families, which is why nutrition is something that all of the doctors and staff at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are passionate about. Drs. Hasell and Pham have received additional training in nutrition so they can help their patients achieve the highest standards in nutrition. “We train together, which makes us very consistent in how we practice,” says Dr. Hasell. “We’re more of a family, we have one location, and we get to know our families.” Dr. Pham adds, “We take a more personal approach. One of our biggest passions is to inspire parents and families to be in charge of their health to become fit and healthy as a whole – body, mind and spirit.” From Newborn Colic to College Colds Whether you’re up in the middle of the night with your toddler who has a fever, or your teenager has the flu, the doctors at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group are ready. From their focus on the importance of breastfeeding and healthy eating, to common colds, to menstruation and hormones, they’ve got you covered. Their focus is on consistent, personal attention for their patients. From newborns to young adults, no

matter how complex the medical poblem, they are there to both comfort and advise. For parents who are expecting, it’s popular to come in and meet your pediatrician and to form a relationship, because you don’t want to wait until a baby is sick and fussy to decide whom to see. Dr. Hasell says, “We encourage people to come in and meet us.” Dr. Hasell says, “We are on staff at Mease Countryside Hospital, The Medical Center of Trinity, and Florida Hospital North Pinellas, which used to be Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, and we are on the Affiliate Staff at All Children’s. We enjoy going to the hospital to meet the babies who will be coming to our practice. “ As kids grow, it’s important that they get used to seeing a doctor regularly, especially for well visits, because it gives them a chance to ask questions of their doctor that they might not ask their parents. This is especially important in the teen years. Dr. Hasell says, “We see a lot of patients with upper respiratory tract infections, ear infections, stomach viruses. We also help children with special needs, and we diagnose and treat ADD and ADHD.” Dr. Pham says, “We see a lot of

adolescents. It’s good that they get used to going to a checkup every year, because it teaches them to put the responsibility of their health into their hands. If they get used to going when they’re well, they’ll feel comfortable talking to a doctor that they trust when they have a problem.” They see it all at The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group, making it easy for parents to know that they are in good hands, with experienced medical professionals. In fact, for the past 16 years, Dr. Hasell has been the Medical Director for the Pasco Child Protection Team, helping to diagnose and treat children who may have been abused. Dr. Hasell is also a Trinity Rotary Club member, which he says he enjoys because all of the funds raised go towards children’s charities. If you’re looking for a pediatric practice for your family, choose The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group located at 2044 Trinity Oaks Blvd., Suite 235 in Trinity, on the 2nd floor of the Trinity Medical Arts Building. “Your Gym is Boring. CrossFit Isn’t!” By Katie Thomas CrossFit is a combination of constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity, resulting in physical fitness far beyond what you will attain with an ordinary workout. With classes offered multiple times per day, and no more than 16 athletes each class, you will receive the personal attention you need in a safe and friendly environment. U R CrossFit is conveniently located in the West Pasco Industrial Park at the corner of SR 54 and Duck Slough Boulevard in Trinity. Amanda and Brian Maucere

opened U R CrossFit almost three years ago in a 900-sq.-ft. location in Downtown Longleaf. After an explosion of growth, the couple decided to move in late 2012 into a 5,000-sq.-ft. training facility. With a continued dedication to complete customer service, two five-ton A/C units pumping cool air, and the space to stretch out a bit, they doubled their athletes in just a few months. Brian learned about CrossFit as a contract firefighter in Iraq in 2009. Over a period of 15 months he went from doing an occasional workout with various military men and women,

CrossFit training is not as expensive as a personal training program and offers you the chance to become part of a team, make friends, and have fun while working out. Brian says, “We want a longstanding relationship with all our members and we call you when we haven’t seen you in a while. We are working on building a community here that is fun and gives you results.” When I first heard about CrossFit, I felt intimidated by the thought of extreme training and being too

weak to finish a session. Brian and Amanda explained that all new members must take introduction classes called On Ramp, so that everyone knows how to perform the basic movements of CrossFit. On Ramp consists of four, one-hour classes that help ensure all athletes understand how to move safely and efficiently through the workouts. Absolutely no experience is needed to start U R CrossFit, so don’t be intimidated – anyone can do it! Brian says, “The hardest part about CrossFit training is getting yourself in the door. Once you are here we will guide you all the way through your workout. Our goal is to get you in, out, and on with your life in an hour.” Amanda and Brian run U R CrossFit as a family-friendly environment; all staff members wear uniforms, athletes keep their shirts on during the workout, and there is always somebody walking around more than willing to answer any questions you may have. Aaron Leech (a former collegiate diver) says, “This place has a great family style atmosphere! I wouldn’t want to train anyplace else!” CrossFit is designed to suit your level of ability, so everyone will end his or her workout equally tired. You truly

So what are you waiting for? Your Introductory CrossFit class is FREE. Introductory classes are held at 9 a.m. every Saturday. On Ramp classes – required before CrossFit classes – are held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, but Brian and Amanda are open to offering additional classes upon request. industry that sometimes comes off as impersonal and sales heavy, the Ed Morse way is the “people-first” approach. Perhaps that’s because it is truly family owned and operated. It all started with Ed Morse, a decorated WWII Veteran who started a small car rental company with his father right here in Florida in 1946; growing it to over 2,000 vehicles and then merging with National Car Rentals, where Ed served as CEO. In 1963, the Morse family purchased their first car dealership and just a few years later they began a relationship with GM that would span generations. Since then, the Ed Morse Automotive

Group has grown to include 15 dealerships, 17 automotive franchises, and 10 different brands. Speaking of generations, Ted Morse, Ed’s son, and his children, Teddy and Catherine, continue to play a role in the company’s operations. In fact, Ted Morse, who is now the Owner and Operator, President and CEO of Ed Morse Automotive Group, grew up in the industry and had the distinction of being a Service Manager, Sales Manager and General Manager before he took over the reins from his dad. their commitment to being great to their customers. And that distinction has set them apart over the years. Another distinction is the many awards that they have earned. Most recently, Ed Morse Autoplaza won the distinguished Mark of Excellence Award for both Buick and GMC, which is a much sought-after award by all GM dealerships. Additionally, they earned “The Jack Smith Leadership Award,” by General Motors. Experience the Ed Morse Difference The Ed Morse Autoplaza in Port Richey offers a full lineup of Buick,

Peaceful Endings for All Faiths Begin at Trinity Memorial Gardens By Julie Kanehl How would you like to be remembered? Let’s face it, it’s not the hottest topic to talk about over the dinner table, but it is an important one. Shouldn’t we at least have the conversation about how we’d like to be remembered when the time comes? Shouldn’t we have an opinion and make it known now, and choose the way we would want to be memorialized? Trinity Memorial Gardens, at 12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity, just off of S.R. 54, is fully prepared to help people of all faiths make these difficult decisions while honoring their beliefs and making the grieving process as easy as possible. Choosing your legacy is important, and while it may be a tough, often uncomfortable conversation to have, it’s one worth having. The greatest gift you can give to your family after you pass is to have your wishes in writing,

your plans in place, and better yet – your final goodbye completely arranged. In the midst of grief and loss, it’s an unimaginable task for a grieving family member to wonder, “What would they have wanted?” The professional staff at Trinity Memorial Gardens, which is locally and independently owned, is experienced at guiding individuals and families on how someone should be remembered. Whether working with individuals who want to have their plans in place way in advance, or working with mourning families who have recently lost a loved one, the kind, experienced staff members are helpful in navigating the many choices and options involved, so that your family can be comforted, and each person’s final wishes can be brought to fruition. General Manager David Czech says, “Our focus is educating the community about their options. There are endless options, and families don’t

know that; they don’t know until it is time.” He explains, “It’s a ministry that we do in actually engaging in educating the community on death and dying.” Trinity Memorial Gardens is prepared to help families remember the individual who has passed by celebrating their lives and making their funeral as unique and personal as the individual, or the family, would like it to be. Catering to families of all faiths, they have a beautiful facility for funeral services, an expansive and beautifully manicured cemetery and offer crematory services

as well. When someone passes, all of their needs can be cared for with dignity, at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Comfort Those You Love After You’ve Passed Prearranging a funeral is a great way to comfort those you love after you have died, and prearranging is not as unusual as you might think. In fact, these days, people are taking an active role in their funeral plans, and they are designing a funeral for themselves with their families in mind. This takes the

heavy burden off of children, loved ones, and siblings who may have to guess on important decisions such as burial versus cremation. In fact, many are designing funerals that focus less on their passing and more on the beautiful life and the relationships that made their lives so special. In order to do so, some difficult questions have to be asked. Here are a few of the tough questions. Do you want to be buried? Would you like a fancy casket or a simple one? Would you prefer to be cremated? Would you want an urn? Would you prefer to be scattered? Would you like a headstone? Would you prefer to be buried with someone or by someone? Would you prefer to be placed in an aboveground

mausoleum? These are just a few of the many questions that the employees of Trinity Memorial Gardens are prepared to help you decide. Whatever your personal wishes are, it’s important to share your wishes and make a plan. The questions are hard now; imagine how much harder they would be for your children or loved ones in the days following your passing. Prearranging your funeral takes the burden off of your family, and gives you peace of mind. Czech says, “Prearranging has so many benefits. It’s the greatest gift you can ever leave your family. Another benefit is that when you prearrange, you lock in the price and can pay over a period of time for the funeral you desire.” If you haven’t thought about it, it’s time to start the dialogue with those around you, and you’ll be surprised by the answers, because they may not be the answers that you ex-

pected. Whatever your wishes, it’s as easy as sitting down with the professionals at Trinity Memorial Gardens and making a plan. Prearranged funerals are like giving a final gift to those who love and cherish you the most. Trinity Memorial Gardens Helps Families Grieve Many people believe that the funeral is for the person who has passed, but when you think about it, a funeral is really a time and a place for everyone who loved you to come together in unity and go through the many emotions that go with grieving. There are many stages to grief, and funerals, while sad, are helpful in the healing process for those who are mourning. The beautiful and recently renovated funeral home at Trinity Memorial Gardens can accommodate many different styles of funerals, from intimate family gatherings, to large wakes where hundreds of people may come to pay their respects. Equally, the vast 40-acre cemetery, which is only 40% developed at this time, is a serene place to say goodbye, and to come and visit with those who have passed. The beautiful cemetery at Trinity Memorial Gardens is reminiscent of a park, with beautiful landscaping, fountains and flowers. This tranquil landscape is divided into large sections that are designated by faith. In

essence, there are many mini-cemeteries within the grounds that cater to different faiths, as well as lovely grounds dedicated to those who prefer a nondenominational burial. Also on the grounds is an impressive mausoleum that offers indoor and outdoor burial options. The cathedral-like stained glass windows welcome visitors into a climate-controlled atmosphere where family members can sit comfortably, rain or shine, and honor those who have died. From plots for one, to private mini estates and family dedicated mausoleums, Trinity Memorial Gardens can help your loved one rest in peace, and give survivors a place to come and peacefully remember those who have gone ahead. If someone you love has passed away, think of Trinity Memorial Gardens, for they can help you and your family create a funeral arrangement for your loved one that will be heartfelt, personal and peaceful. Czech says, “We aim to be pillars of strength and certainty in our community.” If you are ready to make your wishes known, and in doing so, give a long-lasting gift to your loved ones by preparing arrangements now, please consider working with the experienced Trinity Memorial Gardens staff, who will make the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Their mission statement says it all: “We pledge to fulfill our trust and obligation to every Trinity Memorial Gardens family property owner and to all the communities we serve.” Trinity Memorial Gardens is located at 12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity. For more information on planning a funeral arrangement for yourself or for a loved one, call (813) 920-4241 or (727) 3767824, or (888) 271-5820. Every Child Deserves a Voice Walk for Children with Apraxia of Speech

By Dara Tucker Saturday, October 19, at the Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walks for Talk to benefit children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech will be held. The event is a family-fun filled day including a walk, lunch, and games for kids. Onsite registration and check-in begins at 10 a.m., and the walk begins promptly at 11:15 a.m. There is a family meet and greet after the walk at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CASANA’s (The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America) apraxia programs and research. CASANA is a source of inspiration and instrumental in helping many families and professionals gain the knowledge in apraxia needed to move children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) to develop meaningful speech. For many

46

families it is the first place they look to for support after their child is diagnosed. According to CASANA Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a motor speech disorder that first becomes apparent as a young child is learning speech. For reasons not yet fully understood, children with apraxia of speech have great difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary for intelligible speech. Apraxia of speech is sometimes known as verbal apraxia, developmental apraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. The most important concept is the root word “praxis.” Praxis means planned movement. To some degree or another, a child with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech has difficulty programming and planning speech movements. Apraxia of speech is a specific speech disorder. This difficulty in planning speech movements is the missing key of childhood apraxia of speech. The challenge and difficulty that children with apraxia have in creating speech can be confusing to parents, especially when they observe the skill of

learning to speak developing, seemingly without effort, in other children. Brenae Solis, the walk coordinator for Tampa Bay, turned to CASANA when her daughter Emily was diagnosed with apraxia at 22 months old. Brenae explains, “There was nowhere to go to in Florida for support at the time. CASANA is the national apraxia not-for-profit organization that is run out of Pittsburg. They helped me create a walk and support group here in Florida. The proceeds of our Tampa walk go to CASANA.” CASANA’s mission is to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with apraxia so that each child is afforded their best opportunity to develop to their full potential. CASANA is a 501(c)3 public charity and is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to the needs of children with apraxia of speech. With the help of fundraisers like the 4th annual Tampa Bay Walks for Talk, CASANA is able to provide multimedia information on CAS to families, professionals, policy-makers

and other members of the public, provide network and partnership opportunities for parents and professionals to benefit children with CAS, facilitate better public policy and services for children affected by the disorder, create training and educational opportunities for families and professionals, and support apraxia research, especially research which identifies effective treatment and

tember 22 to receive an official Apraxia Walk t-shirt in your size. Jen Alfieri has a team walking for her son. Jen had never heard of apraxia before her third child, Caleb, was diagnosed at 33 months. Jen explains, “I knew something was wrong when he still wasn’t talking at two-and-a-half. I went to our pediatrician first, and then we went to Early Steps several times before we went to FDLRS (Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resource System). It was very frustrating because we were told so many different things before we got his diagnosis. He now receives support through the TALK Program in the school system and private therapy. He’s making great gains with the combination of the two. The other day he strung three words together. Every child is different. For most children speech works itself out, but Caleb was one of 1,000 that it didn’t. I encourage moms to trust your instinct if you think something in wrong. Early intervention is critical.” Join a great cause, Saturday, October 19, and have a fun day at Carillon Parkway/Catalina Marketing Field, 120 Carillon Parkway, in St. Petersburg. Adult walkers are $20, and children under 18 are $10. For more information about the walk, or to donate to the walk, visit www.apraxia-kids.org.

Flush Out Cancer! With Suncoast Urgent Care’s Pink Potty Campaign Every year approximately 200,000 women and 2,000 men in the United States are diagnosed with breast cancer. It is the 2nd most diagnosed cancer in the U.S., second only to skin cancer. There are over 2.5 million breast cancer survivors today and the number of deaths due to breast cancer seems to be declining. Early detection and more effective treatments are thought to be behind the decline, and organizations like the Susan G. Komen foundation are helping to provide the funding for the research needed for these advances. Through events like the Komen 3-Day and the Komen Race for the Cure, the Susan G. Komen foundation has invested more than $2.2 billion to fulfill its promise to become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Suncoast Urgent Care has a unique and fun way to help them raise the $2,300 needed to walk in the 3–Day. Flush Out Cancer with Pink Potty The week of September 30th, Suncoast Urgent Care will move an adorned toilet, the Pink Potty, around New Port Richey to help “Flush Out Cancer!” With a $50 (or more) donation to Susan G. Injured? The Law Office of Charles S. Philips Has the Experience to Help You By Julie Kanehl It may not be something we want to think about, but accidents and injuries happen every day, and when they do, it’s essential that we know whom to turn to. The Law Office of Charles S. Philips is there to protect your rights and to get you back on your feet again when you’ve been injured in an accident. The Law Office of Charles S. Philips is located at 9400 River Crossing Boulevard in New Port Richey, with satellite offices in Citrus, Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando Counties. Attorney Philips has been actively protecting the rights of local residents since 1995, taking a hands-on approach to working with clients and offering personalized representation in and out of the courtroom. He says, “For me it’s not about

getting a case, it’s always about helping people.” Philips received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida, and went on to study law at Stetson University, where he graduated with his law degree in 1987. His many years of experience include serving as an Assistant State Attorney in Pinellas County where he worked in the Traffic and Misdemeanor Divisions as the Lead Trial Attorney, and as a Felony Division Assistant. Before starting his own firm, Attorney Philips, or Chuck as many people know him, was a former associate in a large local firm that focused on Injury Law as well as Insurance Coverage Litigation. In fact, he spent seven years as the lead attorney of the Personal Injury Division in Pasco County. Chuck defended insurance

“You’ve got to understand where their interests lie. They have their own needs and objectives to meet. Mine are to protect the client’s interests, and that’s why it’s so important to keep them honest, and if they’re not, we sue them.” He is a member of the Florida Bar, Pasco Bar Association, ClearAttorney Charles S. Philips isn’t jaded against the inJames Dodson, a Personal Injury surance companies; however, he says, Lawyer in Clearwater, says, “I’ve

known and worked with Chuck on numerous matters over many years. No lawyer cares more or works more diligently to get the best outcome for their client then Chuck. He stays in touch with each client. They will always know what is happening on their case. His integrity is above question. He is an excellent attorney and a credit to our profession. “ A Personal, Hands-On Approach to Law In a world filled with lawyers who rarely see their clients, Chuck’s focus is on personally working with the people who seek his counsel. Sometimes that means telling them up front that they don’t have a case, which can be hard for many to hear, but it’s his straightforward approach and honesty that has earned him so much respect. Sharon Grimes, Chuck’s Legal Assistant, says, “He takes time to personally talk to people about their cases, and sometimes he will see that there isn’t enough UM (Uninsured Motorist) insurance or BI (Bodily Injury) coverage and will not take on the case as he doesn’t want to lead the client on.” She adds, “A lot of firms send the client to certain doctors, and clients can

rack up thousands of dollars in medical bills, only to be left with a ton of debt in the end, because there wasn’t sufficient coverage to satisfy the claim.” Philips says, “The new No Fault Law is complicated, and if people misstep they will lose important benefits, which is why it’s important to know your rights.” Car accidents are, as you can imagine, the most common kind of injury law case, and it can be scary and disorienting when you’re in an accident, which is why Chuck suggests that people have a plan, see a doctor right away and know not to settle with the other person’s insurance company too quickly. Oftentimes, when there’s been an auto accident, the other driver’s insurance company will offer a small amount to see if you will just go away. It’s important to know your rights. The Office of Charles S. Phillips works with clients in a large array of injury cases including motor vehicle and car accidents, as well as truck and motorcycle accidents. Attorney Philips is also very adept at working with victims of DUI auto accidents, working with those with catastrophic injuries and in cases involving wrongful death. Whatever the injury, Attorney Philips will

personally take the time to explain the insurance laws to you, and help you get back on your feet again and to get you the kind of compensation that you deserve. Philips says, “We definitely litigate. I love it! I like to go to court, but I don’t do it to the detriment of a client. Most of the time I will tell a prospective client to wait to hire us so that we can see how they progress in the healing process with a proper course of treatment; thus, I turn some people away if it appears they will heal from their injuries. It therefore saves them a lot of money in legal fees by explaining what the options are, but not undertaking representation. While other firms might not turn people away, I know I have to sleep at night.” Sharon explains, “A lot of people don’t understand how this works, and that it’s all about money, and a lot of people come in and have a number in their heads that isn’t based on realistic expectations. Chuck will explain all of that.” He says, “We look at all of the data, consider the out-of-pocket expenses, the lost wages, the future or anticipated damages and the permanency of any injuries. There is a formula, and

we don’t just pull a value out of the air. In fact, sometimes I’ll mock-try the case.” Doing a “mock trial” is a great way to gain understanding of how the case would go if it were to be tried with a jury. “It gives us such a great perspective,” says Philips, “and based on what our mock jury decides, it helps us decide whether to continue forward with the lawsuit. We’ve streamlined the process too, so it’s affordable for our clients. A trial is always a roll of the dice, but this gives us a better understanding of what a jury might decide.” If you’re looking for personalized representation after an accident or an injury, call The Law Office of Charles S. Philips for representation and counsel that you can trust. The Law Office of Charles S. Philips is located at 9400 River Crossing Blvd, Suite 103, in New Port Richey, with satellite offices all over the Tampa Bay Area. Powerful Ferrantellis – Son & Father Take Gold & Silver at U.S.A. Powerlifting Bench Press National Championship By Diane Galemmo Captain Mike Ferrantelli of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Department and his father, a retired Captain of the Tarpon Springs Police Department, Joe Ferrantelli, proved that they were there to win at the U.S.A. Powerlifting Bench Press National Championship held in Atlanta last month. Mike and his father Joe have some common loves – family, careers in law enforcement and powerlifting. More than 27 years of training for each of the Ferrantelli men paid off with Mike taking the gold medal in his division. Mike’s winning lift was 584 pounds! He also won silver medals in both the Open division and the Police and Fire division. His dad, Joe, benched 347 pounds and won the silver medal in his 70-74 age group division. Both Mike and his Dad are hoping to get nominated to represent the U.S. in the World Championships in April. 2014. Mike says, “If we succeed, we will be the first-ever father

and son team to do so.” With his gold-winning 584-lb. lift, Capt. Mike Ferrantelli proved that he is getting stronger. Back in April of this year, he bench pressed 578.8 pounds to win the gold medal in his weight class at the 2013 Masters Bench Press World Championship,

which took place in Prague, Czechoslovakian Republic, where the best powerlifters from 74 nations were represented. Ferrantelli shares that it was “an incredible honor to represent the United States at such a prestigious event.” Shortly after that, the champion began training for the national

School, he is Administrative Division Commander, Honor Guard Logistical Coordinator and Family Liaison Officer for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. He trains at the James P. Gills YMCA in Trinity. He lifts about six days a week for at least an hour and a half, along with his lifting partners, his fiancé Kelly Leggett and his father Joe. Ferrantelli still somehow finds time to balance his training regimen with his day-to-day duties with the Pasco Sheriff’s Department and his family; he is father to five children. In a recent interview with ABC Action News at the

YMCA, he says, “I feel fantastic. I feel the strongest I’ve every felt.” Ferrantelli’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Just a few months ago, Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco unveiled a sign off of U.S.19 N in Holiday at the Pasco-Pinellas border. It reads: Welcome to Pasco County, Home of Mike Ferrantelli, IPF Bench Press World Champion. Ferrantelli hopes to serve as an inspiration to others. “It’s a fantastic concept, to be able to help people. I believe in paying it forward. I am honored to represent our County and our citizens. I feel truly blessed.”

“Brain Balance” Continued from page 1 fullest academic, social, and physical potential. The Brain Balance Center of Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Road, is one of more than 50 Brain Balance Centers in the nation. Steadily growing because of their proven success with children diagnosed with issues like these, parents and families are embracing the individualized programs available for their entire family. Using personalized and comprehensive assessment tools, the educated and certified teachers, nutritionists, coaches and professionals at Brain Balance assess your child’s difficulties, and then work with your child, your entire family and even his or her teachers to facilitate growth. Brain Balance Center of Oldsmar is owned by Director Larry Polnicky, whose own son, Ben, made incredible advances in the program that they attended out of state. Larry was so impressed with the program that he opened the Oldsmar location so that other children like Ben would be able to make progress without medication. How? The Brain Balance program believes that your brain can change. That’s a bold statement, but when your child begins to speak, after being told that they would not be able to do so, or when your child’s grades improve dramatically despite being told that they wouldn’t be able to succeed, the reality kicks in. There is another option, indeed, and thousands of children’s lives have been improved based on this program. Program Director, Heather Lascano, takes the time to find out what the world looks like from your child’s perspective. She comes to Brain Balance of Oldsmar after years in pharmaceutical drug development as well as

62

years of patent, business, and contract law, and has used tools like yoga in her own small business to aid many people with a variety of ailments. Her experience, her “out of the box” approach and her dedication to truly helping people make Heather a unique fit. Is your Child Disconnected? This “brain-based, not drugbased” program is based on Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, who is a world-renowned neurologist, professor and author, believes that all of these conditions, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called Functional Disconnection Syndrome. Brain Balance is not a medical facility, and so it does not employ doctors, write prescriptions for medications, or accept insurance. What it does do is offer hope, options, proven techniques and a personalized approach. In his book, Disconnected Kids, he explains how these conditions all find a commonality in the way that the brain works, and while if you were to take a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI Scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. The brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Most of us can easily be labeled “left-brained” or “right-brained” but research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues, which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is show-

One parent said, “We drive 2-1/2 hours one way and our son is worth every minute and mile spent on the road. Just 20 sessions and my son’s reading fluency and word reading has markedly improved. We are so proud of him! He loves coming to Brain Balance. His confidence has improved greatly too. Thank you to such an awesome team of professionals who understand and care about children with learning challenges. It’s also a soft place to land as a parent.” Another parent writes, “”I am so proud of Jalon. I’m also so thankful to Brain Balance for all that they have done and are continuing to do for him. I have been telling everyone about Brain Balance and I will keep trying to spread the word because I believe in this program. Unlike any other therapy, Brain Balance treats the

SEPTEMBER 2013

whole child. They were the first to run blood tests and do other extensive testing to test every level from Jalon’s primitive reflexes to food sensitivities and identify the weaker hemisphere of Jalon’s brain. Once they received these results they were able to come up with a program that addresses his sensory, academic and dietary needs. The result is that in just a couple months Jalon has made amazing strides and is now meeting or surpassing his peers in many areas.” The Brain Balance program is tailor-made for each individual child and generally works with children from kindergarten age to ninth grade. Each program generally consists of one or two 12-week after-school programs, where each child participates in a range of activities that help them to improve the connections between both hemispheres of their brains. One of the best parts of the Brain

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

Balance Program is that the educated and experienced staff realizes that when a child is effected, the entire family is effected, and as a team, they gather around to give the child the support that he or she needs from every angle. The program itself gives the child a physical and cognitive activity program that will, in time, change the way the brain reacts. Combined with the right nutrition, and armed with the role that nutrition plays in your child’s behavior, certain behaviors can be changed right away. While we’re all comfortable with traditional allergies, there are foods that may affect the way your child learns, or reacts. It may be strawberries that are the trigger, or the ingredient that holds their favorite candy together, but with an understanding of all of these things, progress can be made. Focusing on areas such as academic performance, social abilities, cognitive function, sensory and motor skills, visual-spatial organizational skills and nu-

trition, your child will be given every opportunity to make advances that you might not have thought possible. Polnicky says, “In a study where 60 of the students had ADHD, 82% of those students were shown to no longer exhibit any signs of ADHD after one 12week program.” He adds, “Two-thirds of the students improved by two grade levels, and one-third of the students actually improved by four grade levels; 100% had some improvement, and 0% had no improvement, so even if I didn’t know from personal experience that this program worked, we have the research to back us up.” One parent wrote a testimonial saying, “Brain Balance truly made our home more peaceful. He is a completely different child than when he started the program. What you offer to kids and their families is priceless!”

and academic potential.” If your child has been diagnosed with a neurobehavioral disorder like ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome, Tourette’s, or any number of learning disorders, don’t lose hope. There are answers beyond the drug store. The best way to find out more about Brain Balance is to come to one of their free information events. The Brain Balance Center of Oldsmar holds parent lectures where parents and professionals alike can gain a unique window into a child’s brain function. Their lectures offer insight into how the brain normally develops and what may interfere with the stages of typical development. Parents can also come in for a free tour, sit down one-on-one with the Center Director and see for themselves what all of the buzz is about. The truth is that people come

from all around the world, and cross state lines to come to Brain Balance Centers. Their innovative, holistic approach to children and families has changed the lives of thousands of people. We are lucky to have a Brain Balance Center right here in Oldsmar. The next free informational event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m and will feature: Ending the Struggle: Understanding the Brain Balance approach to improving academics, behavior and social skills without medication. Please RSVP as seating is limited. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6. For more information or to schedule a tour, please call 813-475-6977. You can also email them directly at oldsmar@brainbalancecenters.com, or visit Brain Balance online at www.brainbalancecenters.com.
