McKitrick Elementary Rocks to Songs in the Key of Art! McKitrick Elementary School’s art teacher, Dianne Zink, has hit on a way to get elementary-school-aged children completely jazzed about art! For the past several years, her students have listened to the music of Greg Percy, a teacher himself, who writes sing-along songs that help kids learn about famous artists and masterpieces. Percy’s play list is called Songs in the Key of Art, and because of the careful planning and fundraising efforts of Ms. Zink, McKitrick Elementary students enjoyed two private concerts by Greg Percy on August 26. It may have been early, but Percy’s fun interaction had the whole crowd bouncing to the beat. He called out, “Okay, it’s early in the morning, please don’t be wimpy!” Singing “The Red and Yellow Blues,” a song he wrote to help his own students learn their primary colors, Percy didn’t give the audience a choice, they

were up and moving to the cha-chacha and learning to mix up primary colors to a beat. “I’ve been wanting to get him here for a long time,” said Dianne Zink. “So I did last year’s art show a little differently, and we framed all of the artwork and the parents were able to purchase their child’s artwork framed and ready to hang. We made enough profit from the framed art sales to pay to bring him here and that was my goal.”

Ms. Zink didn’t tell parents or the students what the money would be used for, as she didn’t want to build up hope in case there weren’t enough funds raised. The concerts were hugely successful, with students and teachers alike enjoying the fun performance. We here at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles want to say, great job Ms. Zink and McKitrick Elementary, on going above-and-beyond to give your students a day for the memory books!

Community Calendar The 2014 Hall of Fame Dinner at Land O’ Lakes High School Features Keynote Speaker Shelton Quarles Thurs., Sept. 25, 5:30 PM––The 2nd annual Land O’ Lakes Gator Athletics Foundation Hall of Fame Induction Dinner, to be held on Thursday, September 25, in the gymnasium at Land O’ Lakes High School, will feature Keynote Speaker Shelton Quarles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Director of Football Operations, former Tampa Bay Buccaneer (1997-2006) and Super Bowl Champion. This year’s event will honor five inductees including legendary Coach John Benedetto (posthumously), House Speaker Will Weatherford (1998), RJ McKenna (1982), Tina McWithey White (1979), and Dennis Blankenship (1980). Due to the outstanding turnout last year, it was decided that this year’s event will be held in the gymnasium at 20325 Gator Lane, Land O’ Lakes. The evening will feature live and silent auctions, a gourmet meal, and the Hall of Fame Induction and Awards

presentation. The Land O’ Lakes Gator Athletics Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established last year by Land O’ Lakes High School alumni and local businessmen Jerry Brewster and John Childers, CEO and Founder of JCIII and Associates. The former athletes credit much of their success to what they learned from the positive influence of their coaches and the rigors of athletic completion. They wanted to create a foundation which featured an event to honor former athletes and support future Land O’ Lakes athletic programs. The evening also supports the Land O’ Lakes Academy of Culinary Arts students who will prepare and serve the gourmet meal. The 2013 Inaugural Hall of Fame Induction Dinner garnered over $40,000 through sponsorships, ticket sales and auction proceeds. The proceeds benefit athletic programs at Land O’ Lakes High School and awards for Hall of Fame Inductees. If you’d like to attend this year’s event, tickets are $100 per individual or

WOW! Clearwater Lady Bombers “00” Win USSSA Girls Fast Pitch World Series at ESPN Wide World of Sports! “This is a great hometown win – great motivation!” said proud mom and local business owner Michelle Dumovich, of M.D. Complete Fitness. Michelle is one of many proud parents who recently watched their daughters pull together as team to take it all the way to the number one slot when the Clearwater Lady Bombers “00” ruled the field, winning the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) Girls Fast Pitch World Series at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando! The Clearwater Lady Bombers “00” fast pitch softball team has 13 players – 12 are in 8th grade and 1 is in the 7th grade. The girls, ages 13 and 14 years old, are from all over the Tampa Bay area, but play in the Clearwater Lady Bombers organization, run by president Tony Grat. The players are: Athena Andrews, Natalie Zweig, Jenna Wojnar, Kendyl Crean, Gillian Sladden, Grace Hastings, Anna

“Dumo” Dumovich, Bayley Williams, Morgan Dansby, Mia Merson, Devyn Howard, Lauren Jarnagin and Jane Wickett. “The ultimate goal for our players is a college scholarship,” said head coach Tom Sladden, who couldn’t be more proud. “Most of the team has been together for the past three years.” In addition to Sladden, the team coaches are Jason Jarnagin, Bryan Williams and Tim Zweig. Coach Sladden gives the break down, “We played in the 2014 USSSA Fast Pitch World Series in Orlando, against a field of 53 teams from around the Nation. We played at several different complexes around Orlando/Kissimmee, including the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney. Our team went 9 and 0 in the tournament, even though it was double elimination, we didn’t lose a game. The last 4 victories came on the last day of the tournament. We scored 71 runs while allowing only 7! We had

Coach Sladden knows what it takes on the part of the team members and their parents, stating, “We will take a couple weeks off, then its back to work for the Fall/Winter season. Fast pitch travel softball is a year around sport. I would like to thank the parents of all the players for all of the sacrifices made for the girls throughout the year.” Congratulations Clearwater Lady Bombers “00” from all of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles!

Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More Builds to Please! By Katie Thomas Your home is your safe haven, and within your home, you have your special spaces where you can close the door and just let the rest of the world slip away. There is no better place than a beautiful master bath suite where you can recharge yourself. So shouldn’t your bathroom reflect your individuality? If you are considering updating your bathroom, you’ll want an experienced, licensed contractor who is reliable and affordable, and one who will turn your vision into your dream-come-true. You want someone like Chris Snyder, owner of Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More, who specializes in remodeling and renovation projects for your home and guarantees that you will receive quality, honest work from start to finish. Located out of Pasco County, Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More specializes in custom bathrooms, cabinet installations, fixture solutions and more. With a lifetime of experience in the construction business, Chris Snyder works side-by-side with his wife Faylee to bring you quality work at fair pricing that you can trust will last. Chris says, “When it comes to hiring a contractor for a home remodel or renovation, you want to make sure you are choosing someone that will walk you through every step of the process, keep you involved in the project and perform quality work that is long-lasting. Faylee and I work together on each individual project to ensure that our clients get exactly what they want by a team they can trust. We don’t subcontract and we always visit our jobsites together.” As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to make certain that a contractor is licensed and insured; always ask about licensing and check their credentials, because a faulty job could

14

end up costing you valuable time and money. Contractor Chris Snyder is both licensed and insured to perform contracting work in the State of Florida. Chris built his first house with his dad when he was eight years old and has been in the building business ever since, and has had his contractor’s license since 2004. It truly is his passion to provide beautiful custom designs for his clients that are not only aesthetically pleasing but durable and functional as well. Faylee, a native Floridian, says, “We work together as a team because we just love being together and completing a project makes us both feel accomplished. What better life is there than to work with your soul mate every day and be happy dong it?” Chris adds, “We love the Tampa Bay Area and are here to stay. Our customers never have to worry about us not being there for them if something goes awry. We make it our mission to provide the best finished project the first time around, but if anything isn’t up to standards, we get back to the project right away and find a solution, free of travel fees.” In addition to a one-year warranty on labor for any work performed, you will always receive honest work from Faylee and Chris. “Our name is our reputation and we only want the best to be said about our work,” says Chris. “Many of our clients appreciate that we work as a husband and wife team…many times we even become friends with our clients because we strive to build relationships with each person whose home we enter.” Chris specializes in custom bathrooms, but can do just about any kind of contracting work. Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More has a long list of references and works with you to find discounts through material vendors

that can be passed on to customers. Chris says, “I can get great discounts with the companies I use. We can usually find what the customer wants at a better price than they would get if they were doing the shopping on their own. If you order something that needs to be picked up, we even will get the material to your home for installation. We cover all the bases, from start to finish.” The Snyder Difference: In addition to honest, quality work from a licensed and insured construction expert, you receive a lesson in home upkeep and renovation projects when working with Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More. “We walk our clients through the process of what we will be doing to their house,” says Faylee. “During our initial consultation, we sit down with you and find out exactly what you are looking for. From there, we are able to tell you if your project is feasible or not. If a contractor is not willing to sit down with you and have a conversation with you about your style, design preferences and budget, then you should not use them! Many contractors will just

throw around numbers with you, you’ll agree on a bid and then start the work. We make a huge effort to educate our customers about their project from start to finish and we are flexible to meet their scheduling needs.” Tampa Attorney Paul Prezepis only uses Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More for house renovation and construction needs because he only wants the best for his home and family. Paul says, “The first time I ever used Chris Snyder for a significant project was actually at my parents’ house. They had a sunroom with a leak and I checked into a few different contractors’ estimates. I chose Chris because I could just tell he was the type of contractor that was truly honest. From my experience with contractors I have seen that most don’t take the time to walk you through the process. From the minute Chris walks in the door you get an overall sense of trust with the guy. He knew what the exact problem was, why it leaked and showed me the project plans. This was before I really knew Chris well, but I just knew he was the right guy for the job. Every guy that came over before Chris visited was your typical

contractor… not exactly sure what they’re going to do and with no set plan. What sold me on Chris’s work was that he explained his entire plan in detail. He went and above-and-beyond just patching the leak. He took off the entire strip of shingles down to bare wood for a true fix. Told us the right way it should be done and followed through. It has been a couple of years and the roof has not leaked

since. Now, I use Chris for any job I need done around the house. He’s a great contractor and now a great friend of mine.” More recently, Paul had Chris remodel his bathroom. “I was home the day he performed the work on the master bathroom of my home, so I watched him work. The guy just knows what he’s doing,” says Paul. “The bathroom looks fabulous now.

Chris is efficient with time and his clients’ money. He bids fairly and he’s honest - what more could you want from a contractor? He’s the whole package and his work is impeccable, which is the icing on the cake. All the intangible things that we don’t generally see in the industry, he sees it.” Customers Vicky and Ron say, “We had some grout issues with the tiles in both of our bathrooms. We found Snyder Custom Bathrooms and More in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles, so we contacted Chris and Fay. Chris and Fay are fair, prompt, honest, conscientious, very neat and also have no hidden costs from the first quoted contract price. They explained the process from beginning to end. “Nelson Dentistry” Continued from page 1 who asks about a great dentist.” Because of his commitment to his patients, Dr. Nelson is dedicated to to life-long learning and professional development. He has trained with some of the world’s most prominent cosmetic dentists and has attended dental training facilities such as the Center for Advanced Dental Studies and the Pankey Institute. Most recently, he completed courses on advanced laser techniques, earning proficiency certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry and a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry. This continuing education allows Dr. Nelson to offer the most recent advances in cosmetic, restorative, and laser dentistry. “I have many patients who’ve been with me since the practice opened,” says Dr. Nelson. “Because we stay up-to-date on the latest dental practices and technologies, our practice and expertise has grown along with our patients needs. We are able to help them with all their dental needs. Recently, we became the first American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine accredited facility in the state of Florida.”

Sleep Soundly Again If you are one of the 20 million Americans who suffer from sleep apnea or severe snoring, you know how a lack of sleep can affect your life. Up until now, the only option sleep apnea sufferers had was surgery or a bulky and obtrusive CPAP machine. Unfortunately, many people who try a CPAP machine are not comfortable with them and stop using them. Dr. Nelson works with local physicians and sleep centers to determine the severity of your sleep apnea. If appropriate, he will then fit you for a compact, comfortable oral appliance similar to a mouth guard. The appliance is designed to position the jaw forward, keeping the airway open during sleep. Dr. Nelson customizes for each individual to ensure a comfortable fit. Since the appliance easily conforms to the contours of your mouth, you’ll likely become used to wearing it in a few short days. After you’ve been fitted, Dr. Nelson will send you home with a portable machine to track data during the night while you are sleeping. Using this information, Dr. Nelson will be able to determine whether the oral appliance therapy is working effectively. Dr. Nelson has seen a high success rate with the oral appliance. His

patient David reported sleeping better after the first night of wearing the device, “Every morning I have woken up feeling refreshed. I was not able to use the CPAP machine but would definitely recommend (the oral appliance) to other patients. It is very comfortable and it works.” Love Your Smile Nelson Dentistry can help you get and keep a smile you’ll be happy to show off. It is inserted between the gum tissue and tooth where it painlessly removes the noxious elements that cause gum disease. Patients will see results in just two, two-hour sessions. For patients who might be frightened by dentistry, Dr. Nelson offers a full range of relaxation dentistry including minimal sedation dentistry, where patients simply take a pill before their visit, making them relaxed, yet conscious and able to respond to questions.

Westchase Music School By Marcy Sanford Since opening one year ago, the teachers and students at Westchase Music School have been busy making beautiful music, giving back to the community, and forming new bonds and friendships. “We wanted to make Westchase Music School a vital part of the neighborhood,” says owner Rick Foessett. “One of the ways we’ve given back to the community is by entertaining the residents at Ashton Gardens. It is a wonderful way for the students to see how the music they are making can entertain and enrich people’s lives.” Whatever the instrument, Westchase Music School’s teachers can help your child master it. Voice, piano, guitar, violin, flute, oboe, drums – the experienced staff at Westchase Music School can match your child to the teacher who will help his or her talents flourish. “We match students up with a teacher that we think will be a good fit with their personality,” says Westchase Music School staff member Nicole Aaronson. “We talk to the parents about the type of teacher they and their child prefer and what genre

of music the child is interested in. We help match personalities so our students are even more successful in their music lessons. Every lesson includes 30 minutes of individual instruction and 15 minutes in the music technology lab. Our teachers really focus on the student and let them choose the songs and style of music they are interested in. It makes the lessons fun for the children and gives them a better success rate.” All of the teachers at Westchase Music School are hand picked by Rick’s wife and co-owner Helen. “Before we moved to Westchase, we had opened a very successful music school in Charlotte, North Carolina,” says Rick. “Helen knows the questions to ask to find the best teachers. All of our teachers have degrees in music; many of them have their masters. Some work in the schools or are retired from teaching. When hiring teachers, we want to make sure that they can communicate with the students and that they know how to teach. Someone may be a wonderful musician but that does not necessarily mean they will be a great teacher.” “I love teaching people to find

“Priel Salon” Continued from page 1 bring a whole new style and flair to Tampa Bay. “We opened the salon a year and a half ago because we wanted to bring something different to this area,” says Cynthia. “We wanted to bring Tampa a high-end salon to show people that there is a place they can go to get beautiful hair, without having to travel so far. Hair is my passion. I love to teach and just make people happy; it’s such a joy. When someone really loves his or her hair you just feel so good about it. What I love most about what I do is being around people. I love people and I love my staff. Every single one of them has different qualities and each has something that I can learn from. Every day in the salon is different, and every day there is a new challenge to conquer and I love challenges.” In addition to being an exclusive Kerastase salon, Priel is also a L’Oreal Professional salon, and offers ammonia-free

color, deep conditioning and revitalizing hair treatments, human hair extensions, color correction, ombre color techniques, Biolage hair care, and more! Cynthia says, “Our ammonia-free color system

uses an oil developmental system that is very rich and hydrating for your hair. It is very safe for pregnant women and the oil-based system has a lot of benefits.” And the best part is it has no smell, so people who are bothered by the strong smell of other hair dyes, need not worry at Priel Salon! On my previous visit Cynthia recommended I try one

of their fabulous hair treatments. As a result of dying my hair and spending countless hours out in the hot Florida sun my hair has definitely taken a beating. Lately I had been experiencing dry ends, and due to my long hair, greasy roots – Cynthia explained that it is a common complaint in people with long hair and this happens due to the fact that grease gets trapped at the root and cannot make it to the ends; she assured me she had an easy fix. Recommending I try their Fusio-Dose treatment, she explained how it would help balance out my hair and restore it to its natural healthy shine. My treatment started in their glass enclosed treatment room, a quiet oasis located in the back of the salon. “What really separates our salon is our treatment room. We focus heavily on deep conditioning hair treatments – that is something we are very well known for in the area. We are the only salon on this side of Kennedy that has Kerastase; it is a very exclusive

We also have a huge array of shampoos for every single hair type.” With its spa like atmosphere, the treatment room allowed me to relax in total comfort, without distractions, as I received my shampoo and conditioning in perfect tranquility. During the treatment, Cynthia performed an unbelievably amazing head and scalp massage and as the

treatment was setting, she gently massaged my hands and arms, allowing me to sink into further relaxation before the final rinse. It was a truly revitalizing experience, and it is remarkable how something as simple as getting a hair treatment can completely transform your mood and bring utter peace and serenity to your day.

Following the shampoo, Cynthia blow-dried and styled my hair, and the finished result was nothing short of amazing! I was thrilled with my new, shiny, healthy hair and couldn’t wait to go show it off to my friends! Cynthia also recommended some fabulous products to help me upkeep my hair in between treatments and thus far I have been really happy with the results! “What I love most about this area is the different people that I have met,” says Cynthia. “We are really proud of what we have achieved

and for the opportunity to provide our customers with the services they are looking for. Every single person that walks in our doors matters to us and our mission is to provide the best quality service possible!” In the past year and a half that Priel has been open the staff has experienced such a positive response from the community. This is greatly due to their dedication to quality customer service and the high level of expertise of each of their stylists. She adds, “Our staff is hand picked; we are very meticulous with who we hire. Everybody works well together as a team and we always encourage our clients to visit any of our stylists to find the best match. Bear Track Lake Adventures – A Nature-Lover’s Dream! By Alexis Selby No traffic, no commercialization, and no stress; surrounded by nothing but nature, as you sit on the back porch and stare out into the serene lake and lush woodlands, you are instantly overcome by a sense of calmness and relaxation. Perfectly contrasted by the vibrant green tree line, the sky is a light blue color. There is not a sound to be heard for miles, aside from that of chirping birds or the ‘who’ of a friendly owl – when you stay at a Bear Track Lake Adventures’ cabin you truly have found a secluded oasis and a perfect representation of what it means to get away. If you have never taken a vacation to the beautiful mountains of Kentucky, than you are missing out on one of the country’s most exclusive hidden gems and Bear Track Lake Adventures surely has done an exceptional job of bringing you to nature’s doorstep. Situated in the middle of a valley on 32 acres of mountainous terrain, overlooking a 7 acre lake, this picturesque setting is like something out of a fairy tale. From the moment you arrive you will slowly feel your tensions slip away and the stresses in your life all of a sudden won’t seem so important. If you are looking for the perfect place to recharge your batteries you have found all that and more at Bear Track Lake Adventures. As a guest at Bear Track Lake Adventures expect a warm Kentucky welcome from owners Fred and Janice Austin, as well as their son Justin and their three dogs. They were such gracious hosts and really did an amazing job of making us feel welcome and introducing us to the area. Living right down the road from the cabin, they

30

Imagine yourself waking up to this amazing view! were always there if we had any questions and truly made our experience memorable. Their dogs made great walking companions, especially their beautiful Husky Rocco, who on the first night stayed outside our window, guarding us against any creatures that might be lurking about. Fred Austin, a Health Care Administrator in Florida for 17 years, got to missing his mountains and seasons and returned to Kentucky. He built the cabins at Bear Track Lake Adventures as a way to share this beauty with the rest of the world, and since his first cabin was built over three years ago, Fred has had guests from as far away as Europe and as close as neighboring Kentucky cities. No matter where you live or the lifestyle you lead, you can surely appreciate the magnificence that the Kentucky mountains have to offer!

Sleepy Bear’s Dream With two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an additional loft with a bunk bed, the Sleepy Bear’s Dream,

comfortably sleeps seven, and is the perfect option for families. Newly built in January, the cabin is immaculate and features hand-crafted furniture, custom wood countertops, two thirdfloor balconies, a full downstairs with a pool table, a work out bike and a hot tub, and my personal favorite – a back porch that overlooks the lake. Just picture yourself waking up to that amazing view, drinking your morning coffee as you sit back in the rocking chair taking in the serenity of the lake as the fog slowly rolls off the top of the water. The feeling is almost surreal, knowing you are amongst nature in its truest form, something untouched by man.

Bear Lair Cabin For those with a smaller group, the second one bedroom cabin is the perfect fit, and sleeps four comfortably. Located right down the road from the Sleepy Bear’s Dream, the Bear Lair too sits right on the lake, with a back porch that overlooks the

serene body of water and pristine nature. Built a few years ago, this cabin is just as beautiful and showcases the same craftsmanship and attention to detail as its sister cabin next door. As their names imply, these cabins are all about bears- from wood carvings in the pillars to the furniture, to figures and decorations that can be found throughout. I think Fred and Janice were very clever in naming these cabins as you truly feel like a bear in hibernation from the rest of the world. Away from your hectic schedule and work, for once can let your mind be at ease and not have to worry about the demands of your life. As amazing as the cabins are on the inside, if you love nature than you are going to have to walk outside and explore the many sights that Lee county Kentucky has to offer. And the best part is, if you are looking to do some exploring, you don’t even have to leave the property. With numerous hiking trails and walking paths, as well as cliffs, geological formations and many other unique sights, you can surely get your fix of nature on this 32 acre retreat. They also have a boat so you can take a trip around the lake for a different perspective; or possibly throw out a line to catch some catfish for lunch. Oh yeah, and did I mention – right outside the cabin doors are numerous 50 million year old caves, one of which boasts cave carvings that date back to what archaeologists believe to be over 8,000 years old. In fact if you are an adventure seeker and consider yourself to be the “outdoorsy” type you even have the option of staying in one of the caves overnight. “How would you like to stay in a 50 million year old hotel,” jokes Fred, “we have that!” “This is an amazing cabin and

The woods, trails, cliffs and caves and wildlife are amazing to experience. My two eleven year olds had a blast on the fishing boats this weekend. The cabin was well-equipped with everything we needed. We loved playing with the sweet dogs too. I’ve stayed at several cabins throughout Tennessee and Kentucky and this is by far my favorite. We will definitely be back. Thanks for the memories!” On our visit, my husband and I were very fortunate, as Fred gave us a

grand tour of the property, showing us the magnificent rock formations and caves. They truly are an impressive sight and as you gaze up in wonderment at these breathtaking geological formations that date back over 50 million years old it really does put your life into perspective. Each nook and cranny and uniquely formed layer tells a story of days past and one can only imagine everything these rocks have been through in their life span. With all the activities that can be found by merely stepping out the cabin doors, even more can be found

in the surrounding area, from rock climbing the magnificent cliffs to hiking the trails in the state parks, to fishing and canoeing the waterways; they even have zip lining only a few miles away. In fact, you might not be aware of this, but Lee county Kentucky is ranked among the best rock climbing destinations in the world. “People travel from all over the world to rock climb here,” says Janice. When you visit I also recommend you visit the Red River Gorge – one of Kentucky’s famous sights. A natural bridge that overlooks a steep 100 foot + drop off,

the Red River Gorge really is a magnificent sight. Bear Track Lake Adventures truly is a nature lover’s dream and it is with a heavy head that I leave here today and return to reality; although I seek comfort in knowing I will once again return to this beautiful oasis and revisit the many amazing memories I have made on this wonderful trip. So, next time you are looking to escape from reality to a place where your stresses will simply melt away, where you can finally be at peace and recharge your batteries, I suggest you take a little trip to Bear Track Lake Adventures – it is a trip you will surely cherish for the rest of your life!
