Vinson Air Conditioning and Heating - Our Business is Your Comfort! By Kim Thomas

Michelle and Michael Vinson

When you are having problems with your air conditioning or heating unit – whether it is a weekday, late at night or on the weekend – you need a reputable, honest company that will respond right away. You need a company that promises, “Our business is your comfort!” Vinson Air Conditioning and Heating is that company. It offers same-day service and 24-hour emergency service and you can expect an owner to answer your call. The company has an A-rating with Angie’s List and in 2011, Vinson A/C was awarded with the Angie’s List “Super Service Award.” Founded in June 2004 by owner/president

Michael Vinson, Vinson Air Conditioning and Heating is fully insured and licensed (license # CAC1814136) and services both residential and commercial customers in Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas Counties. Michael lived in Tampa for 35 years before moving to Pasco with his wife Michelle and their children nearly 11 years ago. He had worked for reputable air conditioning companies in the area for many years – he has more than 25 years of experience in the industry – and felt that it was time to begin his own family owned and operated company. So he earned his state certification and built a company on his good work ethic and customer referrals. See “Vinson A/C” on page 54.

Let’s face it. Everyone has a favorite meal that they look forward to, a certain entrée that has to be made a certain way or by a particular person. Maybe it’s your mama’s meatballs, or your grandmother’s holiday roast. In different parts of the country there are many great rivalries between restaurants about who makes things better, be it chili, pizza, beignets, BBQ, or in

this case Philly Cheesesteaks. Nowhere is the competition so fierce than in Philadelphia, where the Philly Cheesesteak reigns supreme. Relationships are forged and lost based on people’s provocation towards places like Pat’s or Geno’s, only minutes from one another. For people from Philly, there are few things sweeter than simply walking up to the window and saying “With Onions” or “Without,” and knowing that they are only moments

away from a deliciously hot, frizzled (that’s a real world, I promise) steak sandwich where the meat, the cheese and the onions have come together to melt into something akin to heaven, dripping with juices and cheese whiz (if that’s your preference) and served atop a freshly baked Amaroso roll. If that seems like a mouthful, it is! It’s also been said that people’s passion for Cheesesteaks is so fierce that the very thought of an Amaroso roll can bring tears to their eyes. Well, fear not my Philly Cheesesteak fans, because The Best of Philly Cheesesteak House right here in the Trinity area makes the real deal entirely of ingredients sent straight from Philadelphia (from The Original steaks to the rolls from Amaroso’s Bakery in PA). The Best of Philly Cheesesteak House, located in the Woodgate Plaza on Seven Springs Blvd, is owned by Mike and Debbie Natoli. Mike can almost always be found at his grill,

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Do you know the Cotee River Lions Club? The Cotee River Lions Club is a member of Multiple District 35 Florida and the Bahamas and a part of Lions International. The group meets at 7 p.m. twice a month – dinner meetings on the 2nd Wednesday and dessert meetings on the 4th Wednesday – at the Lion’s Den located at 8320 Plathe Rd. They do have a good time, enjoying socializing, but the Lions are much more than just a social club. They are enabling people to see again with a focus on fundraising to meet the needs of those in our community with eyesight problems who can’t afford to see a doctor or even to buy a pair of glasses. Lions International was founded in June 1917, in Chicago, Illinois by a group of businessman, led by Melvin Jones. These men pooled their many resources and talents together to provide service, aid, and assistance to others. Through the years, their efforts have grown to more than 1,400,000 members in more than 187 countries and geographical locations. The motto

of the Lions is “We Serve” and serve they do! Locally, the Cotee River Lions Club, founded in December 1975 and chartered in March 1976, has provided to the residents of the West Pasco community more than 8,700 eye examinations, provided more than 8,500 pairs of glasses, 71 cataract surgeries, 6 corrections of crossed eyes, and 10 surgeries for detached retinas. In addition, the local club has purchased two mini-speaker machines for local boys suffering from cerebral palsy. These machines allow the children to communicate through the use of a laser activated voice module. These services are funded through a wide variety of club fundraisers which include a monthly pancake breakfast, chicken barbecue, fish fry, white cane days, and bowl-a-thons to name a few. Over the past 37 years, the Cotee River Lions Club has raised more than $600,000, all of which has been distributed to the less fortunate and ailing within our community.

Trinity Area Neighborhood News Directly mailed once a month to nearly 18,000 households in zip code 34655.

These are not funds used for “overhead” and no one get a salary at the Lions Club. All of the funds raised go back into the community. The Cotee River Lions Club sponsors its youth organization, the Cotee River Leo Club, where local high school students participate in various events that both serve the local community while developing leadership skills that will help them grow to be productive and responsible members of the local community.

5th Annual Barktoberfest will be a Tail-Waggin Good Time! Sun., Oct. 28, 11 AM–3 PM–– Looking for something fun to do this October with your fur-kids? Paw Wash Plus will host their 5th Annual Barktoberfest Pet Charity Event at Harley Davidson of New Port Richey (on SR 54) to benefit SPCA Suncoast. Admission is free and visitors, both two-and four-legged, are invited to join in the festivities starting at 11 a.m. The fun will be nonstop from start to finish. Kim Crane and Diane Clokey, owners of Paw Wash Plus, really know how to throw a pet-friendly bash! “Four years ago this event started out as a small fundraiser in the parking lot of our shop. We just thought it would give our costumers a pet friendly event to come to while raising a little money for charity.” Says Kim. “After the 3rd annual Barktoberfest we knew it was too big to have at our location any longer and we began looking for a bigger venue.” That’s where Harley Davidson stepped in; they have been

4

big supporters of SPCA Suncoast and offered to let Paw Wash Plus use their location for future Barktoberfest events. “The more we can spread the word about these wonderful rescue groups and all they do for these animals, the easier it will be for them to accomplish their goals of getting forever-homes for animals in need. These volunteers put so much time and effort into the causes that they believe in and we are just honored and proud to be a part of that community,” explains Kim. Vendors will be plentiful and will offer everything from beauty products to pet accessories. The Treble Hooks will be bringing their brand of Florida Soul Shine to Barktoberfest this year! That’s right, this year for the first time Barktoberfest will have a live band playing eclectic covers in the traditional style of blues, folk, country, and rock with a southern soulful boogie woogie sound. The height of entertainment,

though, will be the fur-filled costume contest that grows bigger and bigger each year. Paw Wash Plus has seven different costume categories to enter your pooch in: Best Biker Dog, Cutest Dog, Diva Dog, Most Original, Spookiest Dog, Pet/Owner Look Alike & Best Overall. Last year there were a record number of 59 dressed up pooches entered into the contest and each winner was awarded a trophy and winners bag with gifts worth about $50. This year they offered local businesses the opportunity to sponsor the contests and have their business names engraved on the trophies. Paw Wash Plus owners and volunteers from SPCA Suncoast have been working on this event since May collecting sponsorships and donations from local businesses who have generously donated baskets and gift items that will be used both in the silent auction and in a raffle table. “We have received so much support this year from our community with donations” says Kim. “Our silent auction and raffle tables will be filled with great baskets and gifts.” There will be food, games, music, photography, a bouncy house for the kids and let’s not forget the dogs! SPCA Suncoast will be there

A copy of her latest book, Woogie’s Travel - Discovering America, will be donated toward the raffle. For more information please visit pawwashplus.com or call (727) 375-7070.

ongratulations on 20 years in the business to Donna and her teams. Donna and The Cleaning Angels initially came to my home in 2010 to offer an evaluation of my cleaning needs. It took only one visit to recognize that their service was considerably different than my previous ones. Their reliability, honesty and dedication to excellent service has proven itself again and again. -Michelle Marquis, Clearwater, Florida We have used The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service for the past two and a half years. Every two weeks we are more than satisfied with the service especially with Ileah who has been the head of the cleaning team that services our home. Their work is a very thorough professional cleaning. They are always prompt, courteous, trustworthy and willing to adapt to our schedule. Along with the regular cleaning each time, they include the baseboards, light fixtures and ceiling fans, blinds and much much more. Our home is always sparkling every time. -Sue and John Kelly Wyntree, New Port Richey, FL I hired the Cleaning Angels over a year ago to help keep my house clean, so I would have time to pick up more shifts at work, to help make ends meet. On my initial interview with Donna Ferrante, she came to my home and we walked through the house together. She gave details of her business and work ethic and expectations for customer satisfaction. Donna and her staff are extremely personable and very professional. I feel like everyone cares if I am satisfied or not. The Cleaning Angels staff has gone above and beyond to work with my husband and my difficult work schedules. I highly recommend the Cleaning Angels to assist in housing maintenance. They do a great job, they are reasonably priced, and with the time I save from having to clean the house myself, I am able to pick up extra shifts at work and do other errands and chores. Love, Love, Love!!!! -Jennifer Mugianis, Tarpon Springs, FL We have used The Cleaning Angel for just over a year and I wonder how we ever got by without them! Our first meeting was with the company's owner, Donna; she made us feel very confident and comfortable about the service her company would be providing. Donna assured us that what was promised would be delivered because it was her name on the line. As business owners ourselves the message was loud and clear and we decided to give them a try. The Cleaning Angel has provided the phenomenal service that Donna promised and more. Our regular team, Ivonne and Anna are dependable, honest, pleasant, hardworking and efficient. They come in and get the job done. Thank you "Cleaning Angels" for making the task of maintaining my home easier on me! -Esther and Michael Halman, Crescent Oaks, Tarpon Springs, FL

We have been using The Cleaning Angels for over a year now and are very happy with their promptness, consistency of cleaning and assignment of regular team lead that we have come to know and appreciate very much. I have also been impressed with their attention to quality of service and willingness to stand behind their commitment to make things right, when necessary. We used various cleaners over the years prior to The Cleaning Angels and found that there was always something annoying about their process or commitment to detail. I would highly recommend using The Cleaning Angel Cleaning Service and have every intention of continuing use of their services moving forward. Julie Ann Wessinger Cambridge Cove, Lutz

I have had the great pleasure of hiring and being in the company of the Cleaning Angels Cleaning Service. They are incredibly accommodating and have superior customer service. I have rarely come across a service organization that is so professional and extremely pleasant to work with. Every time "the Angels " come to my house, it gets better and better. Budget cuts have hit the majority of Americans, but I will give up other things before I would ever consider giving up "my Angels". -Tina Redmond, Keystone Bluffs, Tarpon Springs, FL The Cleaning Angel has been a consistent and dependable cleaning service, working around our family, house guests and home construction. They have been responsive to our special requests and once they know what we like, they provide great value added customer service. I would recommend them to others. -Susan Rolston, East Lake Woodlands, Oldsmar, FL As far as I am concerned there is only one cleaning service in the Tampa Bay area and that is the Cleaning Angels. They came into my home the first time and did a deep spring clean and was I ever blown away. I have never seen a cleaning service do the detail work these girls did. Donna sent four girls and they stayed for seven hours and my home is about 2700 sq. ft. They hand washed all my baseboards, did the blinds in a three step process, washed every door and door frame in the whole house, moved every little knick knack and got into every little corner possible. Two weeks before I used a different service that promised a spring clean. They sent two girls that stayed in my home for 2-½ hours. After throwing my money away I was referred to Donna by someone in Land o Lakes. I’ve told many people if you are looking for your home to be cleaned correctly, don’t waste your time on other maid services. Call the Cleaning Angels if you want it done right and you will never have to find anyone else. Congratulations on your 20 years and hope you have many, many more. -Betty Bennett, Odessa, FL Donna and her team at Cleaning Angels have been cleaning our house for over 4 years now and have done a terrific job. They are dependable, friendly, thorough and trustworthy. Her teams are willing to go the extra mile to make sure our home is extremely clean. Having the Cleaning Angel team clean our house has most importantly allowed us the valuable time that we typically would have spent cleaning, to be spent with our family. Congratulations Donna on 20 years of exceptional work! -Michele Friedman, Trinity Oaks, Trinity, FL

Before I started with the Cleaning Angels, I had tried numerous cleaning services. I was never happy with the results until I met Donna six years ago. She actually was still cleaning herself at that time. Congratulations for expanding your business and making it to 20 years. The service is always excellent - they are prompt, efficient, professional, and their appearance is always great. They always have the correct products and equipment and their attention to detail goes above and beyond. My current lead is Ileah and she has been cleaning my house for several years and I just love her. I am very active in the Trinity community and have recommended the Cleaning Angels to many people. -Sandy Alekson, Champions Club, Trinity, FL I have been using the services of The Cleaning Angel for over seven years. When I first started, Donna herself was doing the cleaning and occasionally bringing another assistant. I am so proud of what she has accomplished since then and how she has grown. All her employees are very efficient, punctual, and extremely pleasant and have a tremendous eye for detail. Her professionalism is the best. I am very impressed with the way Donna runs the business. It is nice to see girls in clean uniform, non-slip shoes, no cell phones and top of the line equipment and chemicals. I also appreciate the customer service that comes from her office. Anclote Chiropractic and Injury Center Has Got Your Back! By Kim Thomas When I walked into Anclote Chiropractic and Injury Center to meet Robert L. Gold, D.C. and his office manager Gina Lombardo, I expected to enjoy our interview for this article. I’d talked to Gina several times by phone and knew she had a great attitude. What I didn’t expect was that I’d find a chiropractor that is a good fit for my family, but I did. Anclote Chiropractic is a family practice and Dr. Gold treats all ages from newborns to elderly. It is comfortable, clean and has an adorable children’s playroom. “Finding the right chiropractor is like finding the right shoe,” says Dr. Gold. “You’ve got to find the right fit for you. What is most important to me is to make my patient feel important. Personal care is what I pride myself on. I am looking to give people the time they need to get better.” Anclote

Chiropractic and Injury Center is conveniently located in the Holiday Tower building at 2435 US 19, Suite 101, in Holiday; their entrance is right next door to Judy’s Natural Foods. Dr. Gold really caters to his patients’ busy schedules. Walk-ins are accepted and he offers extended hours, open late on Tuesday and Thursday until 7 p.m., and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, which Gina says is always busy because so many patients can’t come any other day. Dr. Gold received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2007 from the Palmer College of Chiropractic, Florida campus. A lifelong Floridian, he attended Clearwater High School where he was the caption of the football team and received both academic and athletic recognition. He received an athletic scholarship to attend Glenville State College in West Virginia, under Coach Rich Rodriguez who is now leading the Arizona State Wild Cats and during his college career, he also had the opportunity to play for Coach Rick Trickett, currently the offensive

line coach for Florida State University. Dr. Gold says his first experience with chiropractic was during college football. He became convinced that chiropractic medicine was the right career for him, though, after graduating and coming back to the area as a financial services representative and being injured in a car accident. His injuries propelled him to seek help from a chiropractor and soon he found that not only were the new injuries better – his old football aches and pains were better! His experiences have fueled Dr. Gold’s interest in providing quality chiropractic care to accident victims and athletes of all ages and he provides some great products to help in healing, such as therapeutic tape that promotes healing by allowing more blood to flow into an injured area and more lymph to flow out, and by decreasing harmful inflammation. You may have noticed this type of tape on the bodies of Olympians in this summer’s Olympic Games. Another product utilizing cuttingedge fabric is the IntelliSkin posture correction shirts, bras and braces for improving bad posture. It can

also be a great reminder to sit up straight for kids (like mine) and adults (like me) who are spending too much time humped over a game, phone or computer. Gina, who also grew up locally, said she had just ordered one for her 10-year-old son. “I couldn’t believe how great it works,” she says, “You really can’t have bad posture with the IntelliSkin shirts. Anclote Chiropractic also offers a relaxing hydro-massage bed, and has a licensed massage therapist, Tracey Reger. “Tracey has been doing deep tissue, relaxation, therapeutic and sports massage for over 14 years,” says Dr. Gold. “She came from a great school, has a great work ethic and does a phenomenal job with our patients.” In addition to general chiropractic services such as adjustments – which start with a relaxing rubdown with a Jeanie Rub® massager to get your muscles loosened up – Dr. Gold has also invested in an infrared sauna by Health Mate. He explains that it is safe, providing light from

cold laser therapy, which is used to treat muscle spasm, fibromyalgia, TMJ, and neuropathies such as from diabetic issues. “I have one patient who couldn’t even sleep from the pain he was having from diabetes and now he walks to the office for his treatment,” says Dr. (Left) Anclote Chiropractic and Injury Center is located in the Holiday Tower on US 19 in Gold. Carson Family Care & Medi Spa Provides a Legacy of Care By Julie Kanehl If you are looking for a family physician who understands the busy lives of our local families, then make an appointment at Carson Family Care & Medi Spa, and let their family take care of yours. Many of us can relate to this scenario: Your child comes home with an illness, and the next thing you know the entire family is sick and you’re making three different doctor’s appointments at three different places. Why not take the entire family to Carson Family Care & Medi Spa? They treat the entire family – from toddlers to the elderly, and everyone in between. Carson Family Care has been a part of the Tarpon Springs community for 30 years at their original location on South Pinellas Avenue, and now they have opened up a second location in Trinity, which is convenient to all of the surrounding communities, at 4111 Little Road, just a mile or so north of S.R. 54. All of the physicians rotate between the two practices, and are on staff at local hospitals including The Medical Center of Trinity, Florida Hospital of North Pinellas in Tarpon Springs, and they even have courtesy staff privileges at Morton Plant Mease Hospital in Countryside and in Dunedin. This is so important when you are in the hospital and want to know that your doctor is not only in the loop, but possibly even on their way to see you. It’s this personal touch, and their commitment to patients that makes Carson Family Care unique. Carson Family Care is dedicated to treating your family as a whole,

18

and with their focus on preventive care and their emphasis on communication, many local families turn to Carson Family Care when they are in need of sound medical advice. From pediatric care to women’s care including gynecology and internal medicine to geriatric care, Carson Family Care will take care of the ones you love. In an effort to be as available as possible to better care for patients, later hours are offered on Thursdays, allowing for people to make their own appointments online at their own convenience (if they prefer). There is an in-house lab patients do not need to go elsewhere to have most tests done. In addition to performing inhouse lab work, many procedures can be performed at the office including suturing of wounds, treatment of burns, and the removal of moles, warts and skin cancers. Other procedures done in the office include EKGs, ear lavages (irrigation of the ear canal), spirometry (the study of lung function), and biopsies. Family Style Care For The Entire Family The extended family tree that is Carson Family Care begins with Thomas E. Two of his children have now joined his successful practice, and now his family, quite literally, can take care of yours. Elizabeth Carson, M.D. was raised in Tarpon Springs and spent a lot of time at her father’s practice growing up. “Dr. Beth” earned two Bachelor of Science degrees at The University of Florida, one in Zoology and one in Microbiology. “Get More for Your Closet” By Katie Thomas The seasons are changing and fall is right around the corner, which means it’s time to pull out the scarves, sweaters, boots and other fall fashion accessories! Clothes Mentor on U.S. 19 in the Fountains Plaza, is the perfect place to update your wardrobe inexpensively with the latest fashions or bring in your gently used clothing for cash! With 1000s of new items per week, you are bound to find something you love at Clothes Mentor. Dick and Kathleen Murdock opened Clothes Mentor in 2011 as a new way to make a living and to facilitate an exchange between neighbors within the community. Dick and Kath-

leen are committed to fresh choices for customers and are extremely pleased with the high turnover rate at which clothes enter and leave the store. Dick explains, “Nearly half of everything I sale has been in the store for less than a month.” The Clothes Mentor team is dedicated to offering the community the most sought after brand names that are in “like-new” condition for about 70 percent off of mall and other retail store prices. Clothes, shoes, purses and accessories are organized by size, color and style, which make it easy for you to find exactly what you’re looking for. Clothes Mentor offers a wide spectrum of brand name clothing in great condition from sizes 0- 26 and

shoes from sizes 5-12! “Many customers comment on our organization, size selection and cleanliness,” says Dick. “One customer recently told me that we have the largest selection in sizes that are fashionable and in style!” On The Spot Cash Unlike a consignment shop, Clothes Mentor pays you immediately for any items that are in acceptable quality for resale. The amount Clothes

Mentor pays is based upon brand name, condition, style and current demand. Clothes Mentor strives to buy clothing that is young in age and will accept clothing that is 12 to 18 months in age. You never need an appointment at Clothes Mentor – you can sell your items to the store any time as long as it is one hour before closing time. Clothes Mentor suggests that the items you bring in be in good condition, freshly laundered and in current style in order to keep the store

stocked with the best quality merchandise possible. Cleaning out your closet can seem to be an overwhelming task, but Clothes Mentor has some tips that will help you out during the process of refreshing your wardrobe. Dick says, “Your closet tends to tell your present, past and future. We tend to hold on to items that we think we will one day wear again or fit into after we get to the size we want to be. We suggest starting with one element at a time and going from there.” A great way to find out what you do or do not wear is to apply the hanger trick in your closet – reverse your hangers at the beginning of the month, as you wear and put your clothes back away place the hanger the right facing way, after a month or two,

Clothes Mentor has wonderful coaches on staff that help you create the style sense you are looking for. Friendly, fun and energetic coaches offer you boutique customer service that you won’t find at

It was a steal and the perfect item to spice up my summer work wardrobe! The staff was friendly and I had no problem at all finding the item I went in search of.” Clothes Mentor works hand-inhand with Community Pride, which a non-profit organization that passes on needed clothing to charities. Medical Center of Trinity’s Robotics Program is Surgery at its Best By Kim Thomas Since opening in February 2012, Medical Center of Trinity continues to exceed its patients’ expectations with a level of care that rivals the very best hospitals in the nation. Located on SR 54 in Trinity, where it is perfectly situated to handle the growing healthcare needs of Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties, the 400,000-sq.-ft. hospital is masterfully planned to provide patients with the best medical care possible, including unprecedented comfort in private rooms that easily accommodate friends and family and the latest medical equipment and surgical techniques for the best possible medical treatment. A well-cared-for hospital staff is vitally important to the overall quality of patient care – something that Medical

30

Center of Trinity’s CEO, Leigh Massengill knows firsthand from her years of experience as a registered nurse. Massengill’s experience shows in her dedication to the physicians at Medical Center of Trinity and to their patients. Physicians’ needs were anticipated in the planning of the hospital and the doctors and medical staff have everything they need to provide excellence in medical care. With a commitment to providing the most advanced medicine and surgical techniques available, Medical Center of Trinity has recently purchased the very latest da Vinci® Surgical System, enabling qualified, trained physicians to offer patients robot-assisted surgery. I had the privilege to meet with CEO Leigh Massengill, Marketing Director Mary Sommise, the robotic surgery team, three surgeons who use the da Vinci® Surgical System for robot-assisted surgeries, as well as Victor Becklund, a representative of Intuitive Surgical which is the global leader in the rapidly emerging field of robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery. It was a very educational experience and everyone involved was excited to share this technology that is literally paving the way of the future of medicine. Upon my arrival, Mary Sommise greeted me in the lobby and explained that everyone entering the hospital, from guests and visitors to vendors, must stop at the front desk to register and receive a pass. I handed over my driver’s license, which was scanned into the security system and then I was given a badge that stated my purpose in being

there along with my photo for clear identification. This badging system ensures safety at Medical Center of Trinity and is just one of many ways that patients’ privacy and security is ensured. What is Robot-Assisted Surgery? The most important thing to understand about the da Vinci® Surgical System is that it is not surgery by a robot! I had to smile when I told someone why I was visiting the hospital and she said, “Well, count me out. What happens if that robot messes up?” This is a big misconception! It is not a robot that is in charge of the surgery; rather, the surgeons who utilize this type of surgery are highly trained and are simply using the da Vinci® Surgical System as a high-tech tool in providing the best possible outcome in surgery. Robot-assisted surgeries are less invasive, safer and actually allow for greater precision than the human hand can generate, as well as visual clarity that simply isn’t possible with the naked eye. Patients may enjoy a shorter hospital stay, a much shorter recovery time, minimal scarring and in many cases, surgeons are able to preserve more tissue than they would be able to with traditional open surgeries. There may be less blood loss and much less pain with a da Vinci® robot-assisted surgery.

OCTOBER 2012

The idea of surgical robotics was little more than a curiosity until 1999, the year Intuitive Surgical introduced the da Vinci® Surgical System. Community Hospital, now named Medical Center of Trinity, first acquired a da Vinci® Surgical System in 2006. With the purchase of the very latest model, physicians have even more capabilities including Single-Site incision surgery for many conditions. The da Vinci® Surgical System provides advanced technology and procedural innovation across cardiac, thoracic, urology, gynecologic, colorectal, pediatric and general surgical disciplines. There is extensive training involved in this technique which involves the entire robot-assisted surgery team. Intuitive Surgical’s training program, named Genesis, helps to establish operational excellence. The seamless introduction of new technologies, such as the da Vinci® Surgical System, involves surgeons, operation room staff and hospital administrators, all of whom are trained with the common goal of providing an excellent quality of care through an ongoing focus on procedural proficiency, operations and training for a competitive advantage. “We are fortunate to have Intuitive Surgical’s Genesis program,” says CEO Massengill. “It is a safety and efficiency evaluation program that helps us to im-

plement the best practices from other facilities.” Local Medical Experts Explain Robotics in Relatable Terms Just trying to grasp the whole picture of how robotic-assisted surgery works could have been a very daunting task. Fortunately, I was able to speak with the nurses who make up the robotics team at Medical Center of Trinity and three of the local physicians who are experts in the field of robotic-assisted surgery who helped put this hightech tool in layman’s terms for me. Lori Bruney, RN, CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room), is the robotics surgery coordinator at Medical Center of Trinity. She and her team are extremely dedicated to their patients and supporting the physicians to make the robotics program a complete success. Bruney says, “Robotic surgery offers so many more options to the physician and is a much less invasive procedure for the patient.” The rest of the robotics team includes: Celena Dilley, RN, Chris Poratta, CST (Certified Surgical Technologist), Laura Smith, RN, CNOR, MariGrace Brenner, CST, Becky Fisher, CST, Mary Lettie, RN, CNOR and Administrative Director Lisa Richardson, MHA, RN, CNOR, who shares, “The team component is crucial – you have to have the right people in place at the right time.” At this time, the da Vinci® Surgical System is used for robot-assisted surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, general surgery, and thoracic surgery.

Local gynecologists who are trained to utilize the advanced da Vinci® technology at Medical Center of Trinity are: Arleigh Ancheta, DO, Renuka Ramappa, MD, Robert Smith, MD and Parveen Vahora, MD. Urologists using the da Vinci® Surgical System are Yaser Bassel, MD and David DiPiazza, MD. Keith Chisholm, MD, uses the da Vinci® system for general surgery procedures and Thoracic specialist Louis Astra, MD is helping thoracic surgery patients with this amazing technology. Dr. Keith Chisholm took a few minutes out of a busy day to speak with me. He is the first general surgeon in the area to offer robotic-assisted surgery. The older da Vinci® didn’t offer this capability, but now Dr. Chisholm is able to perform robot-assisted general surgery procedures for gallbladder disease, hiatal hernia, colon cancer, diverticular disease, as well as conditions affecting the stomach and esophagus with excellent results. “The robot is unique in that it allows much greater degrees of movement than laparoscopic surgery,” explains Dr. Chisholm. The ‘wristed motion’ allows the robot ‘arm’ or ‘hand’ to rotate 360 degrees – unlike the human hand – giving the surgeon ease of access to the surgical site. Dr. Chisholm visited the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), a national leading center for surgical simulation, automation, and innovation that is right here in our backyard, in Tampa. Dr. Chisholm says that exciting new innovations are on the horizon; for

instance, elbow movement of instruments, which will allow surgeons even greater dexterity. “Another exciting program is the Single-Site surgery capability of robotassisted surgery,” says Dr. Chisholm. “This will allow multiple instruments to be inserted through the same site.” While this isn’t available yet at Medical Center of Trinity, it is coming very soon. Parveen Vahora, MD, a wellknown and respected gynecologist who is personally invested in the local community through various organizations including the Seven Springs Rotary Club, showed me first-hand how the da Vinci® robot makes surgery safer for patients and, under the skilled hands of a trained physician, it actually provides an easier approach to surgery. “There is a tremendous amount of training that is required of the surgeon and the surgical team. We are all committed to continual training and learning the new advances in technology to bring the best care possible to the patients at Medical Center of Trinity,” says Dr. Vahora. Some of the gynecological surgical the da Vinci® system is used for include hysterectomy, sacrocolpopexy for vaginal prolapse, myomectomies for removal of fibroids and endometriosis. “If you have to have any of these procedures, you want to have it at this hospital because we are so dedicated and committed to providing the best outcome possible,” says Dr. Vahora. “This is the best hospital and the nursing staff treat patients like royalty. My patients rave about how well they are treated, they are happy and

able to go home the next day.” “We have a dedicated team, from surgical support to administration, and they make it easy for me to do surgery safely and efficiently,” says Dr. Vahora. “With laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon only has use of two hands with forceps-like motion, but the robot allows access to four hands.” Those four “hands” replace human hands and give 360-degree wristed motion rotation on three of the hands while the fourth is a 3-D high definition camera. With the da Vinci® system, the physician is comfortably and ergonomically seated with a 3-D view of the surgical site, while the rest of the team is attending to the patient and monitoring everything that is happening. The team has large-screen views of the surgical site in 2-D, but still with high-definition. The surgeon is controlling the arms including the camera but the team is very much involved. Dr. Vahora demonstrated how with the touch of a button the seat and controls automatically adjust to pre-set setting that perfectly align the physician for optimal comfort and control. She demonstrated how clear the 3-D camera made everything by using one of the arms to pick up a penny from the training tool – you could clearly and easily see Abraham Lincoln sitting in the middle of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the penny, which is nearly impossible with the naked eye. Dr. Vahora and the robotic surgery team even let me try my hand at controlling the robot arms and I must say that I was floored by the ingenuity of this system. Using the thumbs and middle fingers of each hand and my feet, I was able to move the camera closer or farther away from the training tool, and learned to freeze the second arm in place while enabling the third arm. This is important because the surgeon can use a tool to gently grasp tissue, such as an artery or vein, and move it securely out the way, then freeze it there without any movement whatsoever, like a shaky hand, and then switch to another arm to continue working. Also amazing was the 3-D aspect, which makes a huge difference in depth See “Medical Center” on page 32.

“Medical Center” Continued from page 31 perception. With a 2-D view – the view a surgeon has with traditional laparoscopic surgery – I was instructed to get as close as possible to an object on the training tool. When I thought I was too close to go further, I was actually about one to two inches away; while with the 3-D view, I was able to get very close, go around and behind objects and get a realistic view of the actual depth I needed to go. This is a powerful tool in demonstrating the difference in degrees of depth perception and precision that are possible with the da Vinci® robot-assisted surgery as compared to laparoscopic surgery. After a short break to absorb what I had learned, I was able to meet David DiPiazza, MD, of Urology Specialists of West Florida. Dr. DiPiazza routinely performs da Vinci® robotic surgeries including sacrocolpopexy (for vaginal prolapse), anterior exenteration (removal of bladder and pelvic organs in women with bladder cancer), cystoprostectomy (removal of bladder and prostate in men with cancer), pelvic lymphandectomy (removal of lymph nodes), prostatectomy (removal of

prostate), partial and radical nephrectomy (removal of part or all of kidney due to cancer), adrenalectomy (removal of adrenal gland), and pyeloplasty (reconstruction of renal pelvis and ureter). “I am able to get to the surgical site so much easier and quicker with the da Vinci® robot,” says Dr. DiPiazza. “Complex motions like sewing are much more difficult with laparoscopic surgery which is in 2-D compared to robotic surgery.” He continues to explain how additional training with other experienced surgeons using this advanced technology helps to fine-tune a surgeon’s technique. “It’s like one professional athlete closely watching another to learn his technique.” Dr. DiPiazza strives to constantly learn the fine aspects of robotic surgery from surgeons who have literally performed thousands of these types of procedures. Perhaps the best person to hear from though, is an actual patient. Dr. DiPiazza took me to meet Greg Crosswhite, an active grandfather from Niceville, Florida who decided to have surgery for kidney cancer at the stateof-the-art Medical Center of Trinity under the expert hands of Dr. DiPiazza who performed a partial nephrectomy via the da Vinci® Surgical System. The cancer was removed and the kidney was

saved. Mr. Crosswhite had surgery the day before I met him and was already being released from the hospital. The first thing he said upon seeing Dr. DiPiazza was, “Can I shake your hand and thank you?” He told me that he first saw Dr. DiPiazza when he was in the area visiting his children and experienced pain from a kidney stone. It was a minor inconvenience that ended up Dr. Parveen Vahora (standing) shows Kim Thomas saving his life after tests re- how surgeons use the da Vinci® Surgical System vealed that he also had kidney cancer. Pretty Pooches at Petsburgh By Alicia Pack Dog owners know the trials and troubles that come with taking their babies to a groomer. The loading, the unloading, the stress and the time spent in cages. But now, pet owners have a different option when it comes to grooming. After five years of working at a traditional grooming salon, Julie Gentry decided it was time to go into business for herself. The end result was Petsburgh Mobile Pet Salon, which provides on-site grooming services for pet owners. Julie wanted to provide a more personal service for her customers by bring her mobile grooming van to her customers’ homes. “It takes about a third of the time it takes to bring your dog to a salon,” Julie says. “It is a lot more comfortable for dogs, and more convenient for customers.” Mobile grooming services are highly desirable to busy pet parents in a multitude of ways. The grooming services are performed at the home, saving on driving and reducing separation anxiety. After an initial meeting between the groomer, pet and pet parent,

grooming can be done even when the owner is at work! All that the grooming vehicle needs is access to the dogs and a place to park, no hook-ups or electricity from the home is used. Julie says, “It is nice for owners to have one less thing to worry about.” Pets are groomed in the vehicle and then returned to their homes. Petsburgh groomers do not keep pets in cages at any time. Clean, fresh, heated water is used for baths and water is never recycled. Elderly and disabled pets are accommodated in every way possible. Bayside Center for Plastic Surgery is Committed to Breast Cancer Reconstruction By Julie Kanehl October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a cause that is very close to many of our hearts because more than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. A breast cancer diagnosis is frightening, and the process of removing the cancer often involves removing part of the breast in a lumpectomy procedure, or the removal of one or more breasts through a mastectomy. This can be a devastating and emotional time for a patient and what happens next can be just as important as finding and treating the cancer itself, and that’s breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy is an important part of the healing process and the team at Bayside Plastic Surgery is committed to helping women who are going through breast cancer to feel better and look their best once again. John B. Roach, Jr., D.O., M.S. earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000 from NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale and is a

38

Board Certified surgeon. Currently on staff at Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center, he performs plastic, reconstructive and general surgery. Dr. Roach opened his practice in 2008 in Hudson and just recently moved his practice to the Lutz area specifically to be close to the Medical Center of Trinity where he performs all of his breast cancer reconstruction procedures at their Women’s Health and Obstetrics center. “Their Women’s Center is dedicated to helping women and guiding them through a difficult time,” says Dr. Roach. He adds, “There, women can expect single bed (private) rooms and state-of-the-art equipment.” Patients love the spa-like experience that they receive when they go to the Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and feel comfortable in Dr. Roach’s experienced hands. Dr. Roach performs a myriad of plastic surgery procedures from breast augmentation to facelifts and tummy tucks. “What makes us unique is our dedication towards breast cancer reconstruction,” says Dr. Roach.

According to Dr. Roach, it is important for patients to come to him before their lumpectomy or mastectomy to discuss the many details of reconstruction, so that they can know their options. “Studies show that breast cancer patients who undergo breast reconstruction have better outcomes, and we want women to understand all of their choices.” He adds, “There is an important decision to make between a mastectomy and a lumpectomy, and these choices can make a big difference during a breast reconstruction. There are choices, and we are dedicated to walking each of our patients through the entire process from start to finish.” The breast reconstruction procedure has come a long way over the years, and new advances in breast reconstruction include nipple reconstruction as well. Dr. Roach can create breasts out of a completely flat chest after a double mastectomy using tissue expanders, or in the case of a single mastectomy, create one new breast, and augment the other breast to match. Women no longer have to feel like they lost their

Dr. Roach can completely create a breast that is both aesthetically pleasing and natural looking. Many patients are unaware of this, but unlike regular elective plastic surgery procedures, breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy is often covered by insurance.

One patient writes to Dr. Roach, “Words cannot express my gratitude to you. You are a wonderful surgeon and have made me a whole woman again.” Dr. Roach says, “A lot of times patients say, ’Doc, while you’re in there can you fix some other things?’ and I am happy to do that. It’s important to know that breast reconstruction is a stepped or staged process, but it is not unusual for patients who are coming in for their nipple reconstruction to also have a tummy tuck or a facelift.” Dr. Roach performed more than 1,000 reconstructive surgeries just last year, so he is completely dedicated, and actively experienced in this kind of plastic surgery. When he meets with his patients he takes the time to explain, in detail, the different stages of a breast reconstruction using a power point presentation that details how he will do what he does, and show you pictures of each phase. “It’s a huge psychological burden to have to go through breast cancer and reconstructive surgery, but the majority of the time people are pleased with their outcomes,” says Dr. Roach. “A Holistic Approach to your Inner Beauty” Believe it or not, plastic surgery is an affordable and realistic way to make a

big impact on your life. If you are not feeling good about the way you look, you can do something about it! Whether you are feeling self conscious about your wrinkles, your breasts or any other part of your body, Dr. Roach will sit down with you and explain to you how he can help during a free consultation. You should ask the questions that concern you, because there are very few things that the doctor hasn’t seen before, or that he can’t help you with. How we feel about our bodies truly effects how we feel about ourselves and how we relate to other people in our lives. Improving your body image can have a tremendous improvement in your life. Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure at Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dr. Roach’s calm, approachable manner makes the process an easy one. Whether you would like to increase your bust size, decrease your cup size or even balance out your physical appearance, Dr. Roach can help. While some women want to make a statement with their surgery, others want their breasts to look as natural as possible. Each patient at Bayside Center is unique, as is their surgery, their recovery and their results. According to their website, “Dr. Roach uses breast implants made of FDA approved, medical grade, and bio-

compatible textured or smooth silicone shells filled with sterile saline solution or silicone gel, as well as gummy bear implants. The placement of the implant, as well as the type and size, all depend on your body type, breast anatomy, the breast size you desire, and the doctor’s professional judgment.” Many patients, men and women, come to Bayside Center to have procedures (L–R) Nicole Santiago (Office Manager) Ashley done including everything Rodriguez (Aesthetician) John B. Send Your Dog to Camp! By Amy Paterson Camp K9 Doggy Daycare & Lodging provides a beautiful facility where dogs can truly enjoy their stay, whether they are there for day camping or overnight lodging. Camp K9 has two convenient locations. The original Camp K9 opened on July 1, 2007 in the community of Longleaf and is located at 2944 Defuniak Street (just off of Starkey Road). Coowners Michele Crumbliss and Renee Golda-Widman quickly built a great rapport within their community and gained many long-time customers. Two of those customers, Kim and Maria, liked the concept behind Camp K9 so much that they opened a franchise on US 19 in Palm Harbor in October 2010 and just celebrated its two-year anniversary. Certifications include Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Not only does Dr. Averill have extensive medical expertise, he and Rose also have personal experience with the challenges of weight loss and they truly understand the complex issues and struggles involved in losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight. Together, they have lost over 90 pounds and developed St. Francis’ physiciansupervised wellness and weight loss program to help others achieve success and better overall health. The St. Francis Wellness & Weight Loss Clinic is coordinated by Donna Barbas, who is a certified nutritionist, certified wellness coach, and a certified personal trainer, with a degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida. “What is unique about our program is that it is customized to each individual,” says Donna. “We work with people and try to make it doable for them. We provide the structure, coaching, accountability, education and support that our patients need. And I have seen this program literally transform people’s lives.” Through the weight loss program at St. Francis, many patients have been able to come off of medications for hypertension and even diabetes, learning to control blood sugar through a healthy diet and some have even been able to eliminate insulin shots. “One patient who had maxed out on oral medication for diabetes was told by her doctor that she would have to start taking insulin shots,” says Donna. “She told her doctor to give her one month and then she came to us for our weight loss program. their most beautiful since she was a child. Marina says, “After I received my Masters in business I planned on helping my family with the business aspect of cosmetology. I soon realized that I was more attracted to the procedures of cosmetics than working with the business side.” Marina moved to Florida and received a license as an aesthetician in order to pursue a line of work that helps people feel more beautiful with healthy, radiant skin. Marina utilizes her skills as an Aesthetician in correspondence with Bev and Dr. Winitsky’s medical expertise to give patients the best possible treatments. “It is always important to help our clients improve themselves,” says Marina. “My goal is to listen to what skin problems bother the patients and then I help them figure out how to best correct issues. Many times patients can’t determine the root of their skin care problems, that is why we are here, to get to the root of the problem source.” Marina’s signature treatment is the Advanced Facial, which requires no down time and is perfect for the dry, winter months. The Advanced Facial consists of an intensive treatment that involves a mild peel, extractions,

The Advanced Dermatology team in New Port Richey understands the importance of healthy vibrant skin. Marina says, “It is worth your time to put great care into your skin because it will ultimately help you feel healthier, more beautiful and happier. General dermatology and cosmetic care work hand in hand together to make you feel your best. “Vinson A/C” Continued from page 1 Michelle exclaims, “We have always been a referral-based business, and we still are! Our customers always love to talk about us to others! We branched out and put an ad in Neighborhood News & Lifestyles. We look forward to the opportunity to serve your A/C and heating needs. You will find that we are not only family oriented, but we are customer oriented also.” Vinson Air Conditioning and Heating is an American Standard Certified “Customer Care Dealer.” Each year, only a few companies are certified by American Standard and Vinson A/C has been chosen for three consecutive years. “This honor is earned through hard work in our business and by being a trustworthy dealer/contractor,” explains Michael. “As a Customer Care Dealer, we are graded by our customers through American Standard. We have had service on existing equipment as well as upgraded to new installation. Vinson A/C has met all our needs and will continue to be our choice for the future. Without hesitation, we would recommend Vinson A/C to anyone with heating and cooling concerns.” The Falco family of Hudson was thrilled with their service. “Thank you Vinson A/C for fixing our air. What a blessing it was that they came out right away and got the job done right the first time. Very professional, courteous and reasonable with their prices.” Trinity residents John and Maria Wallace agree, “Mike and Steve are very honest and reliable. We appreciate the trustworthiness of this company. They are great, hard workers and very timely. They never try to sell you something you do not need. We will always keep up on our annual service now with Vinson A/C.” “We are glad we chose Vinson A/C,” writes Odessa residents Rob and Joy. “Not only have we been happy with the workmanship, our

electric bill has gone down over 1/2 since the work was completed. They are so good that we’ve referred them to our friends and neighbors. Vinson A/C is clearly a cut above the rest!” And, Ken Dambrosio of Tarpon Springs sums it up, “The Vinson A/C team is a pleasure to work with over the many years that they have been servicing our home and now that we purchased another vacation rental home they have been servicing that as well. I found out in life, you need an excellent doctor, a good butcher, a great dentist and a trust-

“Philly Cheesesteak” Continued from page 1 greeting his customers and starting up orders for his regulars. He says, “The biggest compliment of all is when people get off the plane from Philadelphia and come straight here for our food.” Mike and Debbie really feel like a part of our community, as they get to spend so much time with their customers. When Tropical Storm Debbie came through this summer a lot of our local areas were affected, and Mike was concerned. He was so happy to hear from customers after the storm and said, “I never realized how close we were to our customers until the flooding.” On the website, Urbanspoon.com, The Best of Philly has a fantastic rating. One customer wrote, “I’ve lived in FL for 25 yrs. and have tried a lot of so called Philly Cheesesteaks. This is by far the best I’ve had. The rolls are from Philly, the meat is from Philly. They make them big as well. What you get at Best of Philly would be considered double meat anywhere in Philly. I’m telling you they are packed. The best referral I can give you is that I have a friend

56

that visits from Philly and he brings these Cheesesteaks back home with him!!! How’s that for a testimonial? I’ve referred many people there and none have been disappointed. Take it from me, I was born and raised in Philly.” You can’t get a better recommendation than that! In most restaurants the cook and the grill are hidden in the back with the dishwasher, but Mike’s grill is right up front by the door. He says, “That’s the part I enjoy the most, is being able to talk with the customers.” Mike takes his business very seriously and actually takes a trip to Philadelphia once a year to taste and compare their Cheesesteaks to his own. He’s even taken tours of Amaroso’s factory. Mike believes that making a Philly Cheesesteak is an art form. First The Original steaks hit the grill and are chopped and frizzled with a spatula, and once you decide on onions, you can add any other ingredients that you might like (popular choices are any of a variety of peppers, mushrooms, lettuce and tomato , and even marinara sauce). Cheese is placed on top of the steak and its other ingredients while the grill sizzles, and just when the

cheese melts to perfection, the Amaroso roll is added. Another bone of contention between Cheesesteak fans is the exact kind of cheese that should be put on there, but really it’s up to you. Mike has the three most popular kinds of cheese at the ready, which are Provolone, American and Cheese Whiz. While many restaurants only offer those few variations on their Cheesesteak, Mike will honestly make you anything you want. Over the years he has developed a menu of popular Cheesesteak favorites like the “Florida,” which comes with onions, mushrooms and sweet peppers, and the aptly named “Sloppy,” which comes with everything that the “Florida” comes with, but also has marinara sauce. Matt McKinley wrote, “If you like sweet peppers and marinara sauce then you have to get “The Sloppy”

The Cheesesteaks are amaz-

ing, delicious, to die for. Why would anyone order anything else? Simply because the other menu items are just too good to ignore! “We get customers who never try anything else. They say they want to, but that the Cheesesteaks are just too good!” He adds, “However, our Chicken Parm sandwiches are probably the next most popular item on the menu. Those go through the roof,” says Mike, and he isn’t kidding. This mouthwatering, tasty goodness of a sandwich melts in your mouth and flies right out the door because it is so popular. The Best of Philly offers a full menu that includes cold hoagies, hot sandwiches, burgers, club sandwiches, wings, boneless wings, breaded fried shrimp, and two kinds of fries, shoestring and his popular fresh cut fries, which are made right there, in-house and from scratch. This football season, Mike has added a new addition to the menu: Johnsonville Brats! This delicious sausage is the perfect accessory to one of their famous Cheesesteaks. Mike says, “The distinctive taste of sausage just goes with football. If you’ve got a good game, and a good Brat, you

can’t beat it.” The Best of Philly is a great place to take the entire family, with a cozy dining area and two T.V.s; it’s the perfect place to grab a quick bite for lunch or dinner. Customers can come in to pick up their sandwiches, dine in, or even have their food delivered! They deliver to everyone within a 5mile radius, which includes all of the neighborhoods in Trinity, including Foxwood and Thousand Oaks East, as far south as East Lake High and to the west, past U.S. 19 to the Darlington area. Affordable, delicious, and made to order, The Best of Philly Cheesesteak House is what’s for dinner this week.
