A Taste of Old Florida in Odessa Cee Bees Citrus in Odessa, FL is proud to announce the Old Florida Food and Folk Festival, taking place on Nov 15th, 2014. The festival will highlight the cultural legacy of Old Florida with a day full of food, art, music, historical presentations and family fun. “Cee Bees Citrus has always been dedicated to preserving the flavor of old Florida by cultivating rare heirloom citrus varieties,” said Marketing Manager Drew Burchenal. “Now we want to bring the community a taste of the Old Florida culture, and we think this festival is a great opportunity to do that. It should be a fun kick off to the citrus harvesting season.” Cee Bees Citrus has brought together a group of artists, musicians and historians that help keep the culture of old Florida alive. Some of those participating include: Mary Ann Carroll – Ms. Carroll is the only female artist of the Highwaymen artist group, African-Ameri-

can artists who sold their paintings along the Florida Roadways from the 1950s through the 1980s. In addition to creating vivid Florida landscapes, Ms. Carrol is an accomplished musician. “We are really honored to have Ms. Carroll joining us,” Burchenal said. “She is a living link to Florida’s cultural history. If we are lucky, we may even get her to sing a few songs for us!” Dorene Butler – Ms. Bulter is the daughter of Robert Butler, an American painter who was a member of the group of artists known as The Highwaymen. She is an accomplished artist herself, whose career spans from the late 80s to the present. Ms Butler authored art instruction book in 2009. Dorene will answer questions regarding Robert’s career, which began in the early 60s; and bring attention to his new autobiography. She will also be doing a live painting demonstration, which will be auctioned off at the end of the day.

Richard Powers - Richard is a self-taught artist who at an early age showed an interest in art. Touched by the rapid loss of the Florida landscape and wildlife that he had known as a child, he developed a strong urge to paint Florida landscapes and wildlife in order to preserve for future generations what Florida once was. He has created a series of paintings inspired by Patrick Smith’s novel “A Land Remembered,” which will be available for sale at the festival. Rick Smith – Rick is the son of Patrick Smith, author of the beloved Florida novel “A Land Remembered.” Mr. Smith will be presenting “Patrick Smith’s Florida is A Land Remembered,” a multimedia presentation highlighting Patrick Smith’s writing and the influences that led to his novels. “It isn’t a stuffy lecture,” says Mr. Smith. “I call it visual storytelling and it’s a fun, fast-paced and entertaining show!” See “Old Florida” on page 36.

De-Stressing Emotional Stresses Workshop and Open House Recovery International Tues., Oct. 28, 1 PM––Recovery International will host an OPEN HOUSE AND WORKSHOP at their weekly meeting in October held at Lakeview Community Church, 475 East Lake Road N in Tarpon Springs. Come and meet its members, hear them tell their stories of how Recovery has helped them overcome their emotional difficulties and learn how Recovery’s self-help method can help you in your struggles with depression,

4

anxiety, panic attacks, anger management and other stresses. The self-help method uses easy to learn techniques and “spotting tools” for changing the way individuals react to people and situations they have no control over. They learn how to identify and manage negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to emotional distress and related physical symptoms. It also helps them to pursue healthy, productive lives with lower levels of tension, anger, fear, anxiety, compulsions, neuroses and other symptoms. Recovery International is a nonprofit, non-denominational organization and was founded some 77 years ago by Dr. Abraham Low, an eminent neuro-psychiatrist. Recognizing the need of his patients to help themselves in addition to therapy, he developed “spotting tools” using cognitive behavior techniques in his self-help method. He went on to give lectures to his patients and to nervous individuals. Meetings were set up to teach and demonstrate the method to the public. Today the organization continues to offer meetings both in the United States and internationally. The meetings are free and goodwill donations are voluntary. If you continue to struggle with emotional stresses, please come to our meeting and learn how to help yourself destress. You are not alone and will find that there is no hopeless case, just helpless in not knowing how to help yourself. Light refreshments will be served. For reservations and information, please call Madeline at 727-943-9216.

Crystal Nail & Spa – Professional Nail Care for Everyone! By Kim Thomas Presentation is important! And for a truly “polished” look, you can’t ignore your hands and feet. It is your best foot that you want to put forward every day and when you meet someone new, you extend your hand in greeting, so it makes perfect sense to keep your hands and feet well groomed. Plus, manicured hands and feet are just healthier! East Lake residents are fortunate to have the very best in professional nail care right here in the community at Crystal Nail & Spa, located in the East Lake Woodlands Shopping Center. Family owned and operated by Johnny and Jenny Nguyen, Crystal Nail & Spa is everything that you want your nail spa to be. It is immaculate, family-friendly, and efficient. Though this popular salon stays busy, it is very spacious inside and staffed with plenty of professional nail technicians, so you are

greeted immediately and with your technician within moments. Jenny and Johnny have owned Crystal Nail & Spa for ten years now. Both have many years’ experience in managing nail salons, and take great pride in making Crystal Nail & Spa the most pristine, friendly nail spa in the area. “We have customers who bring their whole families here,” says Jenny, who really enjoys getting to know everyone who comes to Crystal Nail & Spa. It is common for customers to be greeted by name when they walk in. Customer comfort and safety are priorities at Crystal Nail & Spa. Jenny explains that every single customer receives a personal file kit that is sealed, labeled and stored at the salon for that individual customer’s use only. Jenny also showed me the salon’s state-ofthe-art sterilization system that is comparable to what you find in dental offices, and it’s foolproof – there is a

Crystal Nail & Spa would like to say “Thank You!” to all of their customers and to the community for a great ten years! label that changes color once the tools are completely sterilized. This is done after every single use. Women and men alike enjoy the attentive care they receive at Crystal Nail & Spa, which has an extensive menu of services that offers hand treatments, a fabulous selection of pedicure treatments, waxing services and a facial. It is family friendly too and kids love this place! There are two

child-sized pedicure chairs perfect for the little ones. What you’ll notice immediately at Crystal Nail & Spa is how comfortable it is there. The colors are serene, the music is uplifting, and the waiting area is furnished like your living room at home. Refreshments are available and your comfort and happiness is truly important to the owners and the employees at Crystal Nail & Spa.

Little ones love the kid-sized pedicure chairs at Crystal Nail & Spa

Jenny and Johnny Nguyen welcome you! On a recent visit, I treated myself to a pedicure and a new set of acrylic nails, and wow, do my hands and feet look fabulous now! Even though I just got the basic pedicure, it felt great and not basic at all with the use of hot stones, a foot massage and steaming towels – it was so nice! Next time I want to upgrade to one of the premium pedicures on the menu. There are a lot of premium pedicures on the menu such as the Signature Spa Pedicure, which adds a gentle exfoliation treatment for the ultimate soft skin. Fragrance-infused pedicures let aromatherapy take you away with

choices such as Hot Buttered Rum and a Chocolate Pedicure complete with a chocolate scrub and foot massage with chocolate whipped cream. Or maybe you’ll want to try the invigorating Mint & Spices Pedicure or the calming Lavender Delight Pedicure. There also is a Citrus Pedicure, a Coffee Frappucino Pedicure and an Asian Delight Pedicure, formulated with essential oils to energize, invigorate, soothe and soften legs and feet. The newest pedicure offered at Crystal Nail & Spa is completely organic and involves six pampering steps for the ultimate in foot care.

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

After a great pedi, they took hold of my hands and I can’t tell you how much better my nails look now! After remodeling a house and doing yard work, my hands were looking really rough so my nail tech had to do some magic. I have to admit to being super picky about nails. My nails are what my grandmother would have called “poorly” and that means they are really thin and frail and basically I’ve never been able to grow them very well, which is why I chose to get acrylics – truly it is instant gratification with hands that transform to hands fit for a lady right before your eyes! Nail services include acrylics, gel and pink-and-white acrylics or with gel. They also do polish changes, nail repairs and nail take-off. Many people are now choosing gel formulas over

acrylics because it gives you the most natural look, as it is simply a gel layer over your own nails, making them super strong and making your polish really last. Crystal Nail & Spa offers full waxing services in a private area including Brazilian wax technique. If you are looking for an affordable way to pamper yourself, stop by Crystal Nail & Spa. The great service that you’ll get there will put a smile on your face. This busy salon is buzzing with good vibes and a happy clientele. Word has spread and Crystal Nail & Spa is busier than ever, with 20 technicians working on the weekends now. But there are plenty of manicure stations and pedicure chairs and you won’t have to wait around. You’ll be polished and on your way in no time! Crystal Nail & Spa is located in the East Lake Woodlands Shopping Center at 3438 East Lake Road, Suites 6 & 7 in Palm Harbor. Hours: Mon. – Fri., 9:30 a.m.–7 p.m. and 9:30 a.m.–6 p.m. on Sat. Closed on Sun. You can call Crystal Nail & Spa for an appointment at 727-773-0842, but it isn’t necessary; walk-ins are welcome.

Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. We called Grout Tech and we are extremely pleased with our results!

With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not

only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

OCTOBER 2014

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.”

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The

tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! To find out more about Grout Tech’s services or for a free estimate call BJ at 727-768-6828.

“Coastal Jaw” Continued from page 1 In 2012, I had the privilege to write about the opening of the new, stateof-the-art home of the Pikos Implant Institute, founded by Dr. Pikos in 1991. Dr. Pikos teaches state of the art advanced bone and soft tissue grafting surgical techniques to clinicians from around the globe including all 50 states and 32 countries. Dr. Pikos is one of the leading global experts in these innovative oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures prompting dental surgeons worldwide to travel to our area to learn from him and improve their own practices. In fact, dentists at the most recent bonegrafting course at the Pikos Implant Institute represented seventeen states and seven countries. While his work at the Pikos Implant Institute is helping people exponentially through the training that brings these techniques to patients throughout the world, Dr. Pikos is still true to his calling – he wants to heal and help the individual patient and effect positive change in each of their lives. Dr. Pikos shared what he and his colleagues are now able to do for their

34

patients with Same Day Teeth®, and the results are fantastic! Patients who undergo this cutting edge technology enjoy so many life-changing benefits. Renewed self-esteem and the ability to enjoy all types of food again are making people fall in love with life again! Change Your Life With Same Day Teeth® People who have shied away from implants in the past are finding that they aren’t nearly as intimidated by the new technique now available with Same Day Teeth®. Ed White from Weeki Wachee admits that he grew a big mustache to hide his less-than-perfect smile. However, after Same Day Teeth®, he says, “I can smile now and I actually cut [my mustache] up a little higher to show off my teeth.” Prior to Same Day Teeth®, he had tried upper and lower dentures, but as friends had warned him, he found that it was impossible to chew correctly. Mr. White says that everything he’d heard about implants sounded “horrid, like torture, and I really didn’t want any part of it.” But after learning about Same Day Teeth® from Dr. Pikos, Ed reconsidered. “The new way of doing it sounded like such an easy thing that I really had to look

into it.” He had implants and permanent teeth done in both jaws all at one appointment while he was sedated, and he has never regretted his decision. There were a lot of reasons behind Ed White’s decision, but the sweetest reason was that he wanted to impress his wife. He said, “I had to do something because I was retired and was going to be out more soEd White highly recommends Dr. Pikos’ Same Day cially. ple who enjoy eating are going to love having them because they’re rock solid,” said Ed, who recommends Same Day Teeth® at Coastal Jaw Surgery to anyone who is now using dentures. “There is no comparison and this is from a non-foodie saying this.” He talked of the surgery, “I felt normal and three days later, there was no pain - it was unbelievable.” So, Same Day Teeth® work well, but how do they look, you ask? Ed shares, “I have a lot of people ask me, ‘Your teeth look so good, who is your dentist?’ And, I hate saying that they ain’t real. If you’ve got dentures in your mouth, you shouldn’t be hesitant. It’s very simple. It was the best dentist experience I’ve had, and I’ve had quite a few of them. Dr. Pikos said he had this new thing that I’d be perfect for. It’s so much different than what all the people I know that have implants had; my implants are so much better than what they had to go through. It’s so easy – nobody should be afraid to go through it. And again, Dr. Pikos was great.” Dr. Pikos Explains the Same Day Teeth® Difference Dr. Pikos is not your average dental surgeon, and offers nothing less than the absolute best to his patients. The world-renowned oral surgeon and educator is also a visionary who has always sought out other experts to facilitate a better way to treat patients.

Turning to experts in science and technology has led to a “paradigm shift” in dental implants, according to Dr. Pikos, who explains the “All-on-4 concept,” pioneered by Dr. Paulo Malo of Lisbon, Portugal. Dr. Pikos says that it is the tilting of the anchors in the jawbone that makes All-on-4 so unique and strong, allowing him to place a minimal number of implants to hold a greater number of fixed teeth – resulting in beautiful, natural-looking teeth that never need to come out! Prior to the Same Day Teeth® protocol, many patients had to go through several painful surgeries and healing processes before their dental implants were finally done. Bone grafts were often necessary, taking six to ten months to heal. It could take up to one to two years for a complete dental implant restoration, but today with the new technology, Dr. Pikos says, “Literally on the day of surgery, our patient will leave with both implants and teeth that are not removable. The first set stays in for four months – they look great and patients can function in those teeth for a year or longer. However, after 4 months a second set of teeth are made for long term use that are even more esthetic. Dr. Pikos explains that in patients who are candidates for Same Day Teeth®, “tilting implants eliminates the need for sinus and jawbone grafts, enabling patients to transition right to teeth that don’t come out in one day. I’ve done over

East Lake Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

1,100 sinus grafts in my career, and there is still a need for them for those who have some teeth they want to keep,” explains Dr. Pikos. The Same Day Teeth® protocol is highly recommended for both patients with dentures, as well as for those who have multiple teeth in poor repair. For the latter group, teeth are extracted, implants are placed, and the fixed teeth are secured all at the same appointment. This is all done while the patient is sleeping and requires just a few hours for each jaw. Why choose Coastal Jaw Surgery over one of the advertised clinics that offer seemingly similar procedures? Dr. Pikos says, “Same Day Teeth® is not the same as the advertised protocols.” The teeth going in on the day of surgery are created from virtual images from a state-of-the-art lab that utilizes exacting digital technology to provide patients with the best fitting teeth possible. There is quite a bit of pre-planning involved, which actually cuts down on the time the patient has to be in the office. The size and type of implant is predetermined with computer software that allows for precise placement of both the implants and the teeth at time of surgery. This is in contrast to the conventional way where the surgeon places the implants free hand. And the teeth are made from superior materials, giving a beautiful result! “We’ve merged the traditional way with the high-tech digital imaging technology, and it makes all the difference in the final result. As a result, our patient fully benefits because it means less chair time, less expense, and fewer treatments.” He adds, “I have embraced the technology. As an educator, I have to stay on top of my game.” Dr. Pikos has trained more than 2,800 dental surgeons in grafting procedures including the digital technology that is

changing dentistry. He recently taught the first course on Same Day Teeth® at the Pikos Implant Institute in September. He says, “We are the only institute teaching this approach in the entire country.” There is a lot of science behind what Dr. Pikos does, but his heart is truly in making a difference in people’s lives. “People get very emotional when they see their immediate result on that same day,” shares Dr. Pikos. “We are normalizing their life. This is something that transcends all socioeconomic statuses and can happen to anyone. To see the immediate change in our patients’ self-image is very satisfying to me.” If you are frustrated with existing dentures, or have multiple teeth in poor repair, look no further than Coastal Jaw Surgery for immediate relief. In addition to Same Day Teeth®, Coastal Jaw Surgery’s team of Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons perform state-of-the-art dental implant procedures, Digitally Guided Bone Augmentation™, periodontal plastic surgery, wisdom teeth extractions, extractions with site preservation, pediatric and pre-orthodontic care, oral pathology and the safest, proven anesthesia options. IMPROVING SAT AND ACT SCORES By Dr. Wayne Adams For the SAT and ACT Exams in 2014 -2015, there are three major trends every parent should know: (1) The dramatic increases in the minimum qualifying scores for Bright Futures’ scholarships eliminated 50% 75% of students for students graduating in 2014 who would have been eligible in 2013, with an even worse impact on students graduating in 2015 compared to 2013. (2) It is becoming harder for students to score well enough to be strong candidates for admission to their “dream colleges”in Florida and across the nation. (3) Based on my observations during five years, the negative gap between average GPA’s and average SAT/ACT Exam scores has been widening. In other words, GPA’s have maintained or increased, while SAT/ACT Exam scores have decreased.

42

The Damage Most of the damage in Florida has been done for Florida Medallion Scholarships, where minimum eligibility has been increased on the SAT to 1180, and on the ACT to 26. The requirements for the Florida Academic Scholarships on the SAT is 1290 (combined Reading and Math scores only), and on the ACT is 29 (composite without essay).

Nationally Low Rankings At the same time, many students’ scores on these exams are too low for the “dream”, or even their “main choice” schools in Florida or nationally. For the past three years, Florida students have continually ranked around 45th in the key category of student performance on the SAT and ACT compared to other states. Whether inside or outside of Florida, strong exam scores are becoming more critical to admissions and scholarships.

The Reason Based on thousands and thou-

sands of hours tutoring students in five states, I have clearly seen that most students are poorly prepared for these examinations. The major weaknesses are in essays, grammar, critical thinking, vocabulary, effective reading, advanced techniques for math, and overall test strategy. For example, when I evaluate vocabulary with a twenty-five word matching test of definitions every student should know for the SAT and Exams, the average number answered correctly is 5 out of 25 … an “F” of 25%. My highest score in five years of using this evaluation is 14 out of 25 correct, an “F” of 56%. You may be surprised to know that ninth and tenth graders score as well as juniors and seniors in initial vocabulary. On occasion with my students, I see a score of 0 out of 25 correct. Another indicator of our students’ poor preparation for these types of national, standardized exams is that about 55% of Florida students fail their AP Exams. (Based on all AP exams taken by students, not the “politically correct” statements that use how

OCTOBER 2014

many students passed at least one AP exam) This makes absolutely no sense when parents accept that over half their students fail a nationalized exam and fail to receive the college credit they have worked so hard for during a whole year? What happened to the idea of continuously striving for excellence instead of passively accepting majority failure?

Improvement My students normally improve their SAT and/or ACT scores in a relatively short time. For example, 200 – 300 points on combined SAT scores and 4 – 7 points on ACT composite scores. Plus, for Bright Futures, the highest scores in each section of the exams can be “cherry picked” so only the highest are added together to determine eligibility. For college admission, only the SAT can be “cherry picked”. Students who really want to improve at any grade level can do so. For example, recently I tutored a seventh grader, who wanted to qualify for the Duke Talent Identification, improved his score 500 points and qualified with a superscore of almost 1800. This is about 300 points higher than the aver-

Key Teaching Philosophies In class, there are many revolutionary teaching philosophies we discuss and use such as the answers to these questions: What is good teaching? Who is the teacher? What is good learning? What is competition? and What is the real significance of scores in class? Once my students understand and use the answers, their ability to
