During my last visit, I overheard that a houseful of furniture would be coming in soon, making it hard to leave and making me eager to go back. The consigned items include topquality furniture and home accents including lighting and some great artwork for your walls. A set of prints in matching frames from Ireland featuring an artist’s drawings of a stag and a fox caught my eye, and now the prints look beautiful hanging in my son’s room! Trinity Dental Care A Decade of Dental Care at its Family-Friendly Finest! By Katie Thomas Husband and wife dentists Azita Eskandari, DDS and Saied Shayes, DMD recently celebrated the ten-year anniversary of the opening of their family-friendly dental practice, Trinity Dental Care. With a location that is convenient to every neighborhood in Trinity––at 1843 Healthcare Drive, just behind the Walgreen’s at the intersection of Little Road and Mitchell Boulevard––the couple’s office is not only home to the two dentists, but is home to a great staff whom always have patients’ best interests in mind. Trinity Dental Care is a bright and friendly office that never overbooks patients, so you can be in, out, and on with your day as quickly as possible. Dr. Eskandari says, “One of our main goals here is to help people receive the care they need as efficiently as possible. We don’t have a big office because we don’t want people sitting out in the waiting room for hours waiting on their dental care. We keep it small because we keep the wait time

small. You will usually be seen within five minutes of your appointment time. We do this because it helps us give the best care possible to each individual patient, while helping them with them save time.” Dr. Shayes and Dr. Eskandari started out with a small office on Hillsborough Avenue before moving to Trinity. “At the time we saw growth happening here in the community. We were nervous at first because there were more cows than people! But the area has been great to us and we absolutely love our clientele,” says Dr. Eskandari. “When we started here, we had recently gotten married and I was pregnant with our first child. Patients we’ve known since then have become a part of our family and have watched our kids grow, as well as helped our business grow. We are very thankful.” Dr. Shayes and Dr. Eskandari are local residents who live only a few minutes away from the office, which allows them to serve patients during evening and weekend hours. A Taste of Old Florida in Odessa Cee Bees Citrus in Odessa, FL is proud to announce the Old Florida Food and Folk Festival, taking place on Nov 15th, 2014. The festival will highlight the cultural legacy of Old Florida with a day full of food, art, music, historical presentations and family fun. “Cee Bees Citrus has always been dedicated to preserving the flavor of old Florida by cultivating rare heirloom citrus varieties,” said Marketing Manager Drew Burchenal. “Now we want to bring the community a taste of the Old Florida culture, and we think this festival is a great opportunity to do that. It should be a fun kick off to the citrus harvesting season.” Cee Bees Citrus has brought together a group of artists, musicians and historians that help keep the culture of old Florida alive. Some of those participating include: Mary Ann Carroll – Ms. Carroll is the only female artist of the Highwaymen artist group, African-American artists who sold their paintings along the Florida Roadways from the 1950s through the 1980s. In addition to cre-

ating vivid Florida landscapes, Ms. Carrol is an accomplished musician. “We are really honored to have Ms. Carroll joining us,” Burchenal said. “She is a living link to Florida’s cultural history. If we are lucky, we may even get her to sing a few songs for us!” Dorene Butler – Ms. Bulter is the daughter of Robert Butler, an American painter who was a member of the group of artists known as The Highwaymen. She is an accomplished artist herself, whose career spans from the late 80s to the present. Ms Butler authored art instruction book in 2009. Dorene will answer questions regarding Robert’s career, which began in the early 60s; and bring attention to his new autobiography. She will also be doing a live painting demonstration, which will be auctioned off at the end of the day. Richard Powers - Richard is a self-taught artist who at an early age showed an interest in art. Touched by the rapid loss of the Florida landscape and wildlife that he had known as a child, he developed a strong urge to paint Florida landscapes and wildlife in

erations of the Burchenal family work side by side with a dedicated staff to bring a taste of Old Florida to the area. They have recently expanded their crop selection, planting blueberries, grapes and pomegranates. This fall they will also be harvesting fresh produce for sale in their store located on site. “It’s been a tough few years for the Citrus Industry in Florida,” Burchenal said. “Citrus greening has killed millions of the trees and any sort of cure looks to be years away. That’s why we decided to diversify into things like blueberries, grapes, greens and other vegetables. We hope that by next this fall we can be a source of fresh picked produce for the surrounding neighborhoods. This festival is a coming out party of sorts for us. A way to give something back to the customers who have supported us, and introduce ourselves to neighbors we haven’t met yet. I think a lot of people will be surprised to know there is a 300 acre farm growing fresh citrus and produce just 15 minutes from downtown Tampa.” Cee Bees Citrus is located at 16907 Boy Scout Road in Odessa. Attorney Patricia Ferrari is Your Estate Planning and Asset Protection Specialist! By Julie Kanehl Let’s face it, no one wants to think about the inevitable, but waiting is a dangerous gamble to take, especially when you consider those you love. So, be proactive and protect your assets, your home, your business, your treasures, and most importantly, your children by hiring a lawyer who specializes in Estate Planning and Asset Protection, like Patricia L. Ferrari, Attorney at Law. Experienced, flexible and dedicated, Attorney Ferrari will work with you, protect your family and give you the greatest gift of all: Peace of mind. Attorney Ferrari has more than 30 years of experience, including 15 years serving others in her private practice, which is now conveniently located in the Oakstead Professional Center at 19439 Shumard Oak Drive in Land O’Lakes. Convenient to all of Pasco County, Attorney Ferrari offers complimentary home consultations, which means if you can’t get to her,

18

she’s happy to come to you. Hailing from Chicago, Attorney Ferrari is a University of Illinois alumni and a graduate from John Marshall Law School. Today, she considers herself a specialist and a translator in the fields of estate planning, asset protection, Wills, Durable Power of Attorney forms, Health Care Surrogate forms, Elder Care, Special Needs Planning, and insurance claims and disputes. Ferrari says, “I look at myself as a translator and I enjoy taking a big concept and making it understandable to my clients.” Making a Will & a Durable Power of Attorney The truth is, these are hugely important concepts that are not only difficult to think about, but difficult to navigate! That’s why it’s important to hire someone who can do the navigating for you-someone who will know the law and protect you. It’s not as simple as writing a note and

For Ad Info Call (813) 928-6124 • www.NNLFlorida.com

having it notarized like our grandparents used to do, and it’s not as simple as filling out forms online either, because if those are not done properly, they may not meet the very specific requirements of the Florida laws, and as a result, the state and the financial institutions do not have to honor your requests. Attorney Ferrari says, “While living, the most important document that a person needs is a Durable Power of Attorney with designation of health care surrogate!” This is crucial because if you have an accident and become physically or mentally incapacitated, the person you name will be able to conduct your financial matters and make medical decisions on your behalf until you recover. This is especially important to have, regardless of your age, because if you do become incapacitated, and you don’t have this document, your family members have to go to court to open a “Guardianship” until you are well enough to make decisions for yourself

OCTOBER 2014

Patricia Ferrari, Attorney at Law once again, and if you’re seriously injured, there may not be enough time. She says, “With privacy laws and HIPAA, doctors will not disclose health care information or allow others to make basic health care decisions regarding treatment, without a HIPAA compliant care surrogate designation.”

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

The second most important document to have, according to Attorney Ferrari, is a will. She says, “If you die without a will, and are a Florida resident, then your property passes according to the laws of the State of Florida. I have been an attorney for over 32 years, and I have seen heartache and tension between loved ones because there were unintended beneficiaries as a result of a person dying and not leaving a will.” More importantly, if you and your spouse die, and you have children, then your relatives must go to court to have a guardian appointed to care for your children, which can be costly and emotionally taxing for your children. Attorney Ferrari says, “If you have a will then a smooth transition for your children can be accomplished.” It’s also possible to choose one person to raise your child, and another person to be in charge of finances for your child, if that’s what you would choose to do. The key is to know what you would do, plan it out and be prepared! Estate Planning – NOT One Size Fits All! What do you want to leave be-

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

hind? Many people think they don’t have much money to leave behind, or that they’re family members would know what to do. The fact is, it’s just not that simple. Maybe it’s not money at all that that would mean the most to your family, but your grandfather’s pocket watch, or the jewelry that your father gave you. Whatever it is, it may become a bone of contention as to its worth and to whom it’s supposed to go to. Attorney Ferrari says, “Estate planning is not one size fits all. The type of planning that a person needs depends on the types of property they own, their intended beneficiaries, their desire to minimize expenses and time involved in transferring assets to loved ones upon their death, their desire to protect assets for their loved ones from creditors’ claims, their desire to see that there is a smooth transition in the care and support of minor children, and the list goes on.” She adds, “However, estate planning is not limited to after death planning, it also includes planning for unforeseen circumstances when you are living.” Did you know that there are ways to protect your assets from creditors? Did you know that there are ways to

protect your home from the expenses involved in probate, which is the process where titles to assets are passed down to loved ones? There is! In our state, there’s something called The Lady Bird Deed, and it allows for the transfer of real estate outside of probate. Experts in the field, like Attorney Ferrari, are aware of these things, and can make sure that your family’s needs are provided for. Protect Your Business! Asset protection isn’t limited to what you personally own, especially if you own a business! That’s why it’s good to have someone who understands how insurance companies work, and Attorney Ferrari spent many years working as an in-house legal counselor for several different insurance companies. She knows how it works on both

sides, and as a result, has a unique understanding for protecting her clients when it comes to liabilities, claims and other situations where insurance companies may be involved. Whatever your assets are, protect them! Attorney Patricia Ferrari is a Member of the Florida Bar Association, A Member of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar Association, and is admitted to practice in all Florida State Courts. Most importantly, she has a passion for protecting her clients. Patricia L. Ferrari, Attorney at Law, has a practice located at 19439 Shumard Oak Drive, Suite 102, in Land O’Lakes. Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With over ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, recoloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. John Cole and his wife were ready to re-tile their entire bathroom before calling BJ at Grout Tech. “Our bathroom tile was over 40 years old it was looking grungy and very dull. We called Grout Tech and we are extremely pleased with our results! We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at

She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently pro-

tected from any stains. The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much

faster than we had anticipated.”

Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The tile was in good condition but it was

stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and re-caulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! October is ADHD Awareness Month and Brain Balance of Oldsmar May Have the Answers to Help Your Child October is ADHD Awareness Month and Brain Balance Center of Tampa in Oldsmar wants parents to know that there is hope. ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders and is characterized by developmentally inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior, and the symptoms can make it very difficult for a child to succeed in school. Many parents are finding success with the programs at Brain Balance Achievement Centers. Brain Balance use proven strategies to help children exercise their brains. Brain Balance helps children who have ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Disabilities or Processing Disorders, to work beyond those challenges and become more successful socially, developmentally and cognitively. Brain Balance Achievement Center

of Tampa, located at 4022 Tampa Road in Oldsmar, takes a whole-child approach that is personalized and focused on finding causes, rather than masking symptoms. There are more than 50 Brain Balance Achievement Centers in the nation, where children are given an individualized program that includes nutrition, sensory motor coaching and academic skill improvement. Employing Florida Certified Teachers who have impressive resumes in the fields of Behavioral Sciences and Exceptional Education, Brain Balance takes a “brain-based, not drug-based” approach. Brain Balance is an education facility, not a medical facility, and they make it a lot of fun for kids to come, play, grow and change! Brain Balance Program for ADHD The Brain Balance Program® is the most comprehensive approach to overcoming the symptoms of child-

hood learning and developmental issues like ADHD. It offers a cuttingedge, integrated approach that combines three core modalities into one program, integrating physical, sensory motor, and cognitive exercises with nutritional guidance to effectively address the root cause of these issues. Brain Balance’s unique, whole-child approach has helped thousands of kids reach their physical, social/behavioral, and academic potential. The Brain Balance program comes directly from Dr. Robert J. Melillo’s research on neurobehavioral disorders. Dr. Melillo, a world-renowned neurologist, professor and author, strongly believes that conditions such as ADD, ADHD, Tourette’s, Autism spectrum disorders and processing disorders, which were previously thought to be unrelated, are in fact related, and can be grouped into what is called “Functional Disconnection Syndrome.” In his book, “Disconnected Kids,” Dr. Melillo explains that if you were to take

a child with any of these conditions and give them an MRI scan, or any other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find. Their brain is not damaged. These issues are all connection issues, and research has proven that the left hemisphere of the brain and the right hemisphere of the brain have distinct responsibilities, abilities and functions. Research has found that when one-half of the brain has a deficiency, it leads to these connectivity issues, which can result in a “disconnect” between a child and their ability to learn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemisphere of the brain that is showing a deficiency, and to stimulate it so that it will learn to function. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Tampa is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6. For information or to schedule a tour, please call 813-4756977. “J & C Consign” Continued from page 1 room, then you have to check out J & C Consign and Design. As you meander through the store, your eye keeps finding new items in the “living rooms” and “dining rooms” that are set up. One-of-a-Kind Gifts at Affordable Prices! J & C Consign and Design offers a fabulous selection of giftware and handcrafted merchandise from local artisans. Displayed throughout the store, you’ll find many completely unique items including handcrafted soaps and lotions. I love the quirky hand-painted signs in the Halloween décor section. Also adorable are the custom-made buckets, which can be personalized with monogrammed initials, or decorated to show off team spirit for a favorite team. The same local crafter who designs the buckets also designs handmade cards and gift bags, which are completely

unique and inexpensive. You can purchase a package of five handmade cards for only $10, and there is no worry that someone else will give the same card from a big-name company. Right now, there is a great selection of Halloween décor including seasonal flags, and of course, flags to celebrate your favorite college football teams. Gator and Seminole fans will find some great gear inside including the customized buckets, tumblers, signage, doormats and more. With Christmas coming, J & C is getting prepared and I can’t wait to see what Santa brings! Another thing to love about J & C Consign and Design – this store is budget friendly. You won’t believe what you can find

for under $25. For less than $10, you can give yourself the gift of aromatherapy and try one of the Tyler Candle Company® candles. The smallest votive (2 oz.) lasts for 15 hours. I loved the fragrance so much – I chose the Mulled Cider™ - I let it burn continuously and let it inspire me to keep unpacking and to find the perfect place for my fox and stag pictures. I was truly surprised at how little the candle had burned down; they truly do last 15 hours. I didn’t ask how many hours the larger sizes burn, but from the small one and the amazing smell, I know they are the perfect hostess gift and J & C has carries all

sizes and fragrances including the latest holiday aromas. Candles and soaps and lotions – oh my! But there is so much more! Gift ideas abound in this store with picture frames from Glory Haus and festive holiday platters, cheese spreaders, and serving trays. Looking for something special? J & C has it, and even carries a full line of luxurious Hen House linens. If you are looking for a gift, you can’t ask for an easier shopping experience. “We have people who just pull in, put the car in park, and run in for a gift because we have a great selection and

it’s so easy for them,” says Christine. “We even have the cutest handmade cards and gift bags.” Truly, why find the crowds and traffic when you can pop in J & C Consign and Design. It’s easy to get into, there is plenty of parking and the selection is a delight. Plus, the pricing is very fair. Christine says, “I research everything we carry in the store to make sure that we are selling it for less than you’ll find it anywhere else.” Never the Same Store Twice! I am writing this and itching to go back, to see what new treasures I find and honestly, to beat you to it! Nah, just kidding, there are plenty of finds for all of us and the best thing is that the inventory at J & C Consign and Design is constantly changing. When I visited there was a beautiful living room set, a couple of bedroom sets that looked never used even though they were consigned from individuals, and some beautiful high-end furniture from elite furniture stores at greatly reduced prices. I spied an antique pine hutch and I find myself wondering if it is still there. Stop by or you’ll never know what treasures lie within J & C Consign and Design.

By Marcy Sanford For more than 25 years the Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society has been teaching gardening and nature enthusiasts how to bring color and beauty to their yards by using plants native to Florida. “One of my favorite native wildflowers is called Green Eyes,” says Nature Coast Chapter President Julie Wert. “It blooms year round, does really well in sandy, well-drained soil, and it smells like honey.” Julie says that there are many native trees and plants that will provide beautiful color for you year round, but you do have to do a bit of searching to find them. And that’s where the Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society (FNPS) can help you out. They have plant sales twice a year where a wide range of native trees, vines, and wildflowers will be available. The next one will be October 18 at Harvester United Methodist Church at 2432 Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes. “We love our native plants,” says Nature Coast Chapter Vice President Jonnie Spitler. “We have learned

that planting natives does bring life to the landscape.” Julie agrees, “There are many reasons to plant native plants. Because native plants are adapted to Florida’s weather conditions, they require less watering and so you will be conserving water. You will also need less fertilizer and you’ll find that the plants are easier to take care of. Also using native plants gives you a real sense of place in your landscaping. Much of the landscaping around the area looks like it could be anywhere but when you use native plants, you are representing Florida.” In addition to their very popular plant sales, the Nature Coast Chapter of the FNPS has monthly meetings and fieldtrips where you can learn more about a wide variety of gardening and nature topics. They meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center. “We bring in experts in their field,” says Julie. “Recently, archaeologist Barbara Hines talked to us about how native people used plants every day. In September we’ll have a gardening program, and in October

wildflower expert Walter Taylor will come speak to our group.” All Nature Coast Chapter meetings are open to the public. Julie says the best way to find out what programs are coming up is by going to their Facebook page (facebook.com/PascoNativePlants). The monthly field trips are also open to the public. “We try to organize field trips that will be fun and informative for our members,” says Julie. “We have been to Withlacoochee State Forest for a guided hike with a ranger and a geologist. For July, we’re planning a trip to Honeymoon Island and in August we are going kayaking in the Hillsborough River State Park.” “Our group is a great way to connect with other people who enjoy nature and gardening,” says Julie. When you become a member of the Nature Coast Chapter you will receive monthly newsletters and biannual magazines that will give you more information on incorporating native plants into your landscape. You will also get discounts on conferences.

There are a wide variety of memberships available from student to family. The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society is open to everyone. To become a member you can go to the Florida Native Plant Society website and become a member (be sure to choose the Nature Coast Chapter) or you can attend one of their monthly meetings and fill out a membership form there. For more information about the Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society visit their webpage http://naturecoast.fnpschapters.or g/ or their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PascoNativePlants, or attend a monthly meeting. Monthly meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center, 5401 Land O’Lakes Blvd, in the back meeting room. Use the entrance off the courtyard on the south side of the building.
