East Lake Area Neighborhood News

From The Editor Kim Thomas

Have a Joyful and Delicious Thanksgiving! We are thankful for you, dear readers. All of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with all the wonderful things that satisfy the soul. A delicious feast shared with loved ones is hard to beat. Whether you are spending the holidays with a small intimate group of friends or the whole dang family, take some time to put your feet up and just breathe! Then, when you are relaxed, let your mind wander to all the things that you have to be thankful for. And no matter how crazy your life may be, there is something to be thankful for if you’ll take the time to reflect. Maybe, like me, you’ll be thankful the election is finally over and you’re not bombarded with political ads on the tube and in the mailbox! Or you could be thankful that the baby is learning to crawl right on time or your pup finally learned to go outside to do his business. Grandparents may be thankful for the grandkids who remind them of the wonder and joy of youth.

It may be that you are so happy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won a game, or your little league team is playing well. There are big things and small things that happen every day and though life isn’t always perfect – you are alive. And that is something to be thankful for. Just remember, life is messy but a hot shower always feels good. Usually we put out one paper at a time, but when the holidays come around we hustle it up to get in some family time. We will be working hard this month to put two papers out on the day before Thanksgiving so we can all relax for a few days – it seems like that is how it works out every year. And you know, even though it is more work, it always goes smoothly every year. That is something I am very thankful for – coworkers who are likeminded and who also are dear friends. Even though Neighborhood News & Lifestyles is family-owned and operated, there are a few of us writers and graphic artists who aren’t related. But we feel like we are definitely part of

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

the Neighborhood News family and when the going gets tough, this “family” gets tougher! And then we go have some fun! I will be traveling to Carrabelle, Florida to have Thanksgiving with the whole dang family. And there are a lot of us! I’m so thankful for my family my hubby and kids especially! I’m so happy my parents have a beautiful piece of property where neighbors are scarce and wildlife is plentiful, and we can be as loud as we want! I’m thankful that my five siblings are healthy and happy. I can’t wait for all the cousins to fish off the dock, throw the football around and tease each other relentlessly. I’m thankful that we are a diverse family with all types – something that has made each of us grow as individuals. It isn’t always easy to accept others’ differences but when you have love, those differences become endearing. Life is constantly changing and throwing challenges our way, but the challenges, the sadness and the pain make the good times even better!

Just as AAP Fitness was started on a dream, today it expands from a dream yet again. This past April, Alex and Ashley sold their successful New Tampa location in order to pursue their dreams even further. Alex and Ashley have roots in the Palm Harbor community and Alex grew up in the area. They found this beautiful community to be the perfect place to expand their roots and grow AAP Fitness. Alex and Ashley are bringing their successful program to the Eastlake/Palm Harbor area in hopes of building relationships with the local community and sharing their rich knowledge on health and fitness. Alex and Ashley combine their knowledge, passion for health and experience to customize a complete program for their clients. They maintain a strong focus on teaching the “lifestyle” approach. For this reason, AAP includes MANY additional benefits for the cost that most pay for training alone. AAP knows that you need ALL aspects to achieve your goal and stay there forever. tional shopping trips. Alex and Ashley know that this support is vital to the success and motivation of the client. As Ashley so vividly remembers, the core reason behind her success was the constant support she received from Alex. “You can’t expect to have one or two hours per week and that’s it. Succeeding at a lifestyle change is as much about what you do outside of the gym as it is inside. This is where Alex and I come in, we are there to support you and an-

swer your questions. We are there just to tell you that you “CAN” when at times you feel like you can’t. Its emotional as much as it is physical,” says Ashley. Alex has a rich background in Nutrition and has been in the health and wellness industry going on 17 years. Once you meet him it is easy to hear how knowledgeable he is. Alex also is currently in school for his N.D. degree. Through a thorough assessment he puts the pieces together to design and customize a complete plan specific to the individual. Each client goes through a nutritional and metabolic typing assessment as well as a 9-site body composition analysis. “It is not uncommon for Alex to spend hours on end in his office studying metabolic assessments and designing plans,” says Ashley. “He has such a passion for nutrition and applies it to our clients. It really changes lives.” AAP Fitness offers everything from individual training to small group training. They also offer complete web based fitness and nutritional programs. By Katie Thomas Pet owners know that family extends beyond people. Our pets are a part of the family too and it is important to have a veterinarian who is knowledgeable, kind and who has a real love for animals. Sarah Schacht, DVM, is a veterinarian who has all of these qualities and more. Dr. Schacht opened Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center, located at the corner of Tarpon Woods Boulevard and East Lake Road, in March 2010. Dr. Sarah lives locally with her husband, daughter, twin boys, two cats and four cute Chihuahuas. This dynamic veterinarian truly understands the busy lifestyles of her furry patients’ owners. The whole Schacht family is passionate about caring for animals. Dr. Pablo Schacht helps out at Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center one day each week. When Dr. Pablo is in the office he provides veterinary care to small exotic pets such as birds, reptiles, ferrets, guinea pigs and rabbits. If you have an exotic pet that needs veterinary care, be sure to tell the receptionist so she knows to set your appointment with Dr. Pablo. Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center schedules their appointments so that each pet gets the full attention necessary for treatment, allowing Dr. Sarah to spend the time needed with her patients and owners. In order to

practice preventive medical care for your pet, Dr. Sarah suggests a once-ayear exam for younger pets, and a twice-a-year exams for older pets. Having a strong, trusting relationship between you, your pet and your veterinarian is very important when it comes to your pet’s wellbeing. Dr. Schacht says, "You have to earn the pet’s and their owner’s absolute trust, while educating them about the pet. This trusting relationship matters so much in veterinary services." The love and dedication that Dr. Schacht has for animals is the reason she became a veterinarian. “We want to be there for the pet owner and their pets at all times, providing the best possible care,” says Dr. Schacht. Your pet deserves the best and Tarpon Woods Veterinary Medical Center is here to provide the best possible care. COLLEGE ADMISSIONS Dr. Wayne Adams Every student and parent should know that four key factors will determine the difference in a college application being accepted, put on the waiting list, or denied. These are class standing, grade point average (GPA), SAT/ACT scores, and quality of the essay(s). Not long ago, I talked to an admissions officer at a major university who reviews over 1,000 applications annually. She said that almost all students who apply have good class standings, competitive GPA’s, and SAT/ACT scores in the range required. The most important key to a student “standing out” and not getting “weeded out” is an outstanding essay. WRITING ESSAYS THAT “STAND OUT” Outstanding essays are written

22

in a “hook, look, took” format. The hook must immediately grab the reader’s attention. The look answers the prompt with logic, strong vocabulary, and flair. The took is a stirring conclusion that leaves the reader with the thoughts: This essay shows an educated, logical, entertaining, and inquiring mind. Let’s move this application to the next level for more consideration. I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of students write outstanding college application essays and improve their SAT and ACT scores. They have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, UF, FSU, USF, UCF, and many other colleges and universities. Part of the reason for the outstanding essays is my “twenty question” personal inventory that helps me understand the student as a person and learn their strengths so

these can be incorporated into an outstanding essay. Capturing the person is as important as outstanding writing. THE PROCESS In my process, the student completes and sends to me the “twenty questions,” writes the first draft of the essay, and E-mails them to me. It is then reviewed with the student, edited, and revised until it meets the requirements for submission by that college or university. A PARENT’S “THANK YOU” (unsolicited) I want to thank you for your impressive work with our daughter. Your ability to get to know her quickly and to put her life and dreams in essay form was amazing. You truly captured her with your writings, quotes, and poems. She completed her applications to two Ivy League schools and submit-

ted them. If it is meant to be, it will be. Have a beautiful holiday season and, again, thank you for encouragement, belief, time, and efficient work. Your work and support were the best gift we as parents could have given this holiday season. (Student admitted to Ivy) THE TUTOR Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the top tutors in Tampa Bay who specializes in SAT and ACT Prep, college application essays, and dramatically improving writing, vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking for high school students. Normally, his students improve 10% to 30% on their SAT and ACT scores from their baselines, and dramatically improve writing and thinking skills where parents can see results. Adjust. Balance. Thrive. By Jeff Berlinicke Not too long ago, Jason Hurley, F.I.A.M.A., was 14 years old and suffered from back pain. As a young football player, he was doing a lot of weightlifting and training, which consequently took a huge toll on his back and his body. Dr. Hurley started going to a chiropractor, hoping it would change his condition for the better – it ended up changing his life.

26

“It worked,” says Dr. Hurley, who recently opened Motion Council, a chiropractic business in Oldsmar. “I have always had an unusual amount of back pain and once I started going to the chiropractor, it seemed to work.” Dr. Hurley didn’t immediately decide to make it a profession. After playing football at Furman University in South Carolina, Dr. Hurley went into the business world, wearing a tie every day and knowing that it wasn’t the life for him. He remained fasci-

nated by the chiropractic practice and decided it would be a better route for his professional and personal life. He even studied for a time in Honduras and learned that not all countries practice health the same way and that Americans are among the least healthy in the world. It was that approach that lead him to become an ardent advocate of health and to show people that chiropractic is not all about the back – it is about the mind and the nervous system and the things that lead to back pains. At Motion Council, Dr. Jason Hurley and his team of wellness experts put their patients’ bodies in constant motion by providing the ultimate chiropractic care, nutrition, exercise and massage therapies available. Patients who have chronic health conditions that cause them pain, steal their energy or lower their quality of life get back in the swing-of-things with the finest quality of care through the use of modern chiropractic treatment and equipment. “Look at it this way,” says Dr. Hurley. “We are the wealthiest country in the world with the best health insurance, yet the rankings say we are the

Dr. Jason Hurley operates a chiropractic practice, Motion Council, in Oldsmar. He works on much more than back pains, including nutrition, stress relief and other influences that may cause back pain. 33rd healthiest country in the world. Why is that? Because we encourage unhealthy eating, we ignore stress, and we don’t take advantage of good nutrition. It’s out there, but too many people want to settle for fast food.” Dr. Hurley deals with people of all ages and has often given help to babies. He has previously worked with the Labor of Love Birth Center in Lutz and continues today to work with babies before their muscles are

even fully developed. “Much of back pain,” Dr. Hurley says, “is mental in origin, or at least brought on by things besides actual back injuries. The spinal cord controls everything in the body and the brain sends messages to the rest of the body through this cord. The key is the nervous system, and that is affected by your stress level, your nutrition, and many other factors. You would be surprised at how much of a difference getting toxins out of your body can help your back.”

The nervous system is hard to define, yet it dictates much of what happens in the body. Dr. Hurley says, “It is the part of the means by which back pain can develop.” Stress isn’t the only factor when it comes to back pain, but it is something most people do not think about when it comes to back problems. By the time a person reaches the age of 40, the stress factors have built up and underlying disease process have manifested themselves to a point where now the body begins to show signs of dysfunction – what we

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

refer to as symptoms. Seeing a chiropractor can produce great results and Dr. Hurley, along with his highly-trained professional staff at Motion Council do a lot more than just adjust the back. They also offer massage therapy – a great way to sooth those nerves that might be causing the problems in the first place – acupuncture, Pilates, Yoga, nutritional counseling, physical therapy, spinal decompression, kinesio taping, the Graston Soft Tissue Technique and rehabilitation therapy. “I don’t want to call myself a Jack of all trades,” says Dr. Hurley. “I can give my patients some of the best basic advice, but every person has to be able to want to make themselves better. It’s all up to you in your mind. You also have to know how to work out. Put it this way – do you want to be able to play with your grandchildren or do you want to have a hard time standing up? That’s the main thing people need to think about.” Dr. Hurley believes the idea behind chiropractic is to balance the body, allowing injuries and ailments to heal themselves. Chiropractic simply helps the healing process along. There are 24 movable vertebrae in the

human spine with discs in between. Keeping them all in motion is what allows the nervous system and the rest of the body to work at its fullest potential. “The back muscles and the body’s organs can usually heal themselves just fine,” states Hurley. “Other things can be fixed, but the back is the strongest part of your body. Stress, along with eating the wrong foods and taking in toxins leads to back issues. Stress reaps havoc on the body. Chiropractors do a lot more than just fix back problems.” “Thank you Dr. Hurley for taking the pain away and literally giving me my life back,” says happy client Ricky. “After only a few visits I started feeling better and my back has become stronger and pain free. I should have seen you a long time ago.” Motion Council is located at 3687 Tampa Road, Suite 202 in Oldsmar. Hours are Mon., Wed., and Fri. 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sat. by appointment only. For more information or to schedule an appointment please call (813) 749-7162, email info@motioncouncil.com or visit www.MotionCouncil.com.

A Long-Standing Reputation of Quality Service Quality Plus Cleaners began servicing the local area in 1985. Jim Agemy and son Hass began the busi-

Jim had a goal to become Tampa Bay's “Mega Dry Cleaner” and Hass became his righthand-man in developing and operating Quality Plus Cleaners, perpetuating fast paced growth. Jim passed away in 2007, but not before he was able to see his Quality Plus Cleaners branch out to 22 locations, with a new distribution center built on Race Track Road in West Tampa’s tri-county area. Hass took the reins over and has carried on the family business in a way that would make his father very proud. His dedication to streamlining the

Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the

most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains.

The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.” Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and

money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull and stained. “The tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and recaulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day! To find out more about Grout Tech’s services or for a free estimate call BJ at 727-768-6828.

“RE/MAX Elite” Continued from page 1 with agents who are committed to the area. The new office is an expansion of our current model with specific objectives to give the East Lake area an office that is their own.” The offices of RE/MAX® Elite Realty in Palm Harbor and East Lake are professional yet comfortable, offering a place for clients to enjoy meeting with their agent to discuss the details of what they expect from the sale of their home, or what they want in a new home. It is extremely important to the Johncolas that clients have a great experience, whether buying or selling. And even though Real Estate agents are independent contractors, the agents at RE/MAX® Elite Realty are part of a team that has been rigorously interviewed. Tony explains, “We demand integrity and excellent customer service from our agents and we are very selective about agents we bring onboard. We start everything we do with three objectives – faith, family and business – and we want agents who share the same principles.” RE/MAX® Elite Realty’s agents are very conscientious of their clients’

time and will do everything possible to expedite your real estate transactions. The Johncolas have done everything possible to give their agents and clients an advantage. “Where we excel is in our ability to provide a better experience,” says Tony. “Clients will be much better satisfied using our agency.” One way that RE/MAX® Elite Realty strives to make life easier for clients is by offering the advantage of a mortgage company and title company all under the same roof as the Real Estate agency at both the Palm Harbor office and the East Lake office. While Michelle focuses on the Real Estate transactions and helping agents, Tony heads up the mortgage side of the business. “By having RE/MAX Elite Realty, Security National Mortgage and Coastline Title of Pinellas all under the same roof, as

well as a strategic alliance with First Watch insurance (which offers multiple carriers), we give our agents the advantage of giving their clients choices. Because we give our agents what they need to function so efficiently, it gives them a strategic advantage in the market.” Though clients are able to choose what mortgage and title company they want to work with, most choose the convenience and security of RE/MAX® Elite Realty’s close alliances. “Our operations department is local and our underwriters and processors are local, making for a much better experience for our customers,” says Tony. “We can easily close a loan in 3-4 weeks. Security National Mortgage offers more choices for lending, and with us they have a team of people – myself, Jillian Lopina and Kara Siracusa make up the mortgage team and we all have a commonsense approach.”

Houses are Selling! Tony and Michelle are excited about what is going on in the local Real Estate market. “We’d like to dispel the myth that the market is bad,” explains Tony. “We are still navigating through the landscape of what happened in ’08, ’09 and 2010 but the market is stabilizing. When you tie that in with the rates that are now available – there is no better time to buy a house.” People are buying. Michelle says, “Nice houses priced right are selling fast! We have an agent who is closing on a house in Woodfield today and the house was on the market for less than a day when a buyer came along.” RE/MAX® Elite Realty Cares About Community Dedicated to giving back to the community, the Johncolas have created an agency that gives back. RE/MAX® Elite Realty is a Children’s Miracle Network office, giving a small portion of every transaction to the program. Tony explains, “In order for us to be a Miracle office, all of our agents also must support the program and they have all volunteered.” The Children’s Miracle Network is associ-

“Grille House” Continued from page 1 are on a boat yourself. The best part is, you can experience all this without even leaving dry land. Upon buying the establishment six years ago, Mike Lowe, owner and operator of Riverside Grille House, has done extensive renovations, updating this historic landmark into a modern marvel while still maintaining its authentic appeal. Offering exquisite food at an extremely reasonable price, with an atmosphere you won’t we able to find anywhere else has led to their immense success in such a short time, as they re-opened their doors this past February. Riverside Grille House is over 50,000 square feet in size, boasting many different private banquet rooms, bars and dining areas, and will include many new exciting additions in the near future such as a night club, comedy club and cigar bar. “This is going to be the most exciting restaurant in town when the concept is fully completed,” states Head Chef Mark Thomas. Banquet Manager Stephanie Laine will help you plan a perfect menu for your party guests.

General Manager Louis LaMacchia knows what it takes to run a successful restaurant; in fact he is in charge of more than just Riverside Grille House as owner Mike Lowe is also the President and owner of East Lake LLC, a company owning other restaurants including Catches, Rum River and Captain Jacks. Louis goes above-and-beyond for all of his customers and does everything possible to ensure each diner has a memorable, delightful experience. Head Chef Mark Thomas is a true master when it comes to food preparation and execution and has extensive hands-on training, including a degree from the Florida Culinary Institute, which he received in 1982. Mark has worked as an executive chef for the past 20 years, incorporating his unique talents and abilities into every menu item he prepares. His expertise and perfection of cooking, as well as the great direction he gives to the other chefs is clear from the first bite you take. Riverside Grille House has live dinner theater entertainment throughout the month. Dinner Theatre is fun for the entire family and a perfect idea for anyone who likes having a great time while enjoying a fantastic meal. Check www.TheRiversideVenue.com for dates of upcoming dinner shows. If you are ready to kick back and relax, the Veranda is the place for you. On Friday and Saturday nights come and enjoy the live music, with artists playing Jimmy Buffet-style music and steel drums. The Veranda is a completely different atmosphere than the rest of the restaurant and is the perfect setting if you want that island-type laidback experience. So as the sun sets on the Tarpon Bayou, you and your friends can enjoy the upbeat music as you envision yourself sailing away to Margaritaville. Another important aspect about Riverside Grille House is that it is big; though not too big that you lose the personable experience. But because of their size, this is the perfect venue no matter what the size of the party is. Riverside Grille House has four private banquet halls, and thousands of square feet of beautiful dining rooms and open area seating. This restaurant can accommodate every occasion; whether you are having a wedding ceremony on the Veranda, a banquet, a large party with hundreds of people, a wedding reception, a corporate luncheon or just want to have a nice dinner; Riverside Grille House is the ideal place. “I attended a wedding at the Veranda this past weekend,” writes

Judy. “We had a wonderful Prime Rib dinner! The servers were friendly and efficient and the event room was lovely and the views were spectacular. I would recommend Riverside for any upcoming event.” In the next couple of months Riverside Grille House is looking to make some exciting new renovations, including the addition of an upscale club on the main floor of the building – complete with up-beat music, a classy atmosphere and fabulous drinks. They are also looking to add a Comedy Club and Cigar Bar in the near future. “Once everything is up and running, Riverside will be the perfect place for a full night out,” says Louis. Take in the serene beauty of Tarpon Springs and watch the ships pass through the marina atop Riverside Grille House’s breathtaking rooftop dining or inside their elegant indoor dining room. Regardless of where you sit, the view alone is sure to leave you speechless and the food, always made with the freshest ingredients, will surely wow your taste buds. Come to Riverside Grille House and treat yourself to a wonderful night out – you deserve it! Happy customer Joselyn writes, “The restaurant is beautiful, the service is excellent, and the food is phenomenal! I could not have asked for a better dining experience! My friends and I cannot wait to go back!” Riverside Grille House is located at 10 Dodecanese Blvd in Tarpon Springs. The restaurant is open Mon.–Thurs., 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri.–Sat., 11:30 a.m.–midnight and Sun. from 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m. For more information or to schedule a banquet or celebration please call the restaurant at 727-937-2000 or visit www.TheRiversideVenue.com.

Taking Control Of Health Today November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, and the YMCA of the Suncoast is helping our communities cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes through the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, an innovative program that teaches people to make lifestyle changes that lead to greater health. Programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program that help people lose 5-7 percent of body weight through healthier eating and increased physical activity can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is a condition in which individuals have blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. An estimated one in three adults in the U.S. (79 million people) has prediabetes, yet just 7 percent of those individuals know they have it. People with prediabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases such as heart disease and stroke. The YMCA of the Suncoast is one of 74 Ys nationwide participating in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle modification program that helps people reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by helping them learn about eating healthier, increasing physical activity and other behavior changes. The program is a part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program, and based on the National Institutes of Health

48

led, CDC supported, Diabetes Prevention Program study that showed losing a moderate amount of weight and increasing physical activity reduces the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. “Through the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, we are helping people make lifestyle changes that can help avoid developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases,” said G. Scott Goyer, President and CEO, YMCA of the Suncoast. “The Y is the leading nonprofit dedicated to improving the nation’s health and well-being, and the prevention of type 2 diabetes not only benefits the individual, but our community at large.” Individuals who participate in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program take part in a year-long program beginning with 16 one-hour classroom sessions with a trained lifestyle coach who helps them learn about healthy eating, physical activity and other lifestyle changes. Following these sessions, participants meet monthly for added support in reaching their ultimate goals of reducing body weight by 5-7 percent and participating in 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Through lifestyle changes and modest weight reduction, a person with prediabetes can reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes. Visit http://ymca.net/diabetes-prevention for more information.
