By Dara Tucker A year ago Trinity was introduced to a new concept in art entertainment that includes a little bit of paint, a little bit of wine, and a whole lot of fun. The original Painting with a Twist was started by two women in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Their idea quickly spread to 60 franchises in only two years. Trinity’s Painting With a Twist’s owners Sharon Reis and Michelle Beres make art accessible to everyone through their belief that you can create fun art, not fine art. Sharon says that anyone can do it – it’s not about perspective or the color wheel, but about having fun in the two or three hours you’re painting. “The community has embraced us,” says co-owner Sharon Reis. “We

opened this franchise because we wanted to bring a new and creative opportunity to the Trinity region. Over the past year we’ve loved seeing people uncork their inner artist.” At Painting With a Twist you’ll leave from your night out with your own Painting With a Twist has hundreds of paintings that are masterpiece, and featured in classes. From The Editor Kim Thomas

Have a Joyful and Delicious Thanksgiving! We are thankful for you, dear readers. All of us at Neighborhood News & Lifestyles would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving filled with all the wonderful things that satisfy the soul. A delicious feast shared with loved ones is hard to beat. Whether you are spending the holidays with a small intimate group of friends or the whole dang family, take some time to put your feet up and just breathe! Then, when you are relaxed, let your mind wander to all the things that you have to be thankful for. And no matter how crazy your life may be, there is something to be thankful for if you’ll take the time to reflect. Maybe, like me, you’ll be thankful the election is finally over and you’re not bombarded with political ads on the tube and in the mailbox! Or you could be thankful that the baby is learning to crawl right on time or your pup finally learned to go outside to do his business. Grandparents may be thankful for the grandkids who remind them of the wonder and joy of youth.

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

It may be that you are so happy the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won a game, or your little league team is playing well. There are big things and small things that happen every day and though life isn’t always perfect – you are alive. And that is something to be thankful for. Just remember, life is messy but a hot shower always feels good. Usually we put out one paper at a time, but when the holidays come around we hustle it up to get in some family time. We will be working hard this month to put two papers out on the day before Thanksgiving so we can all relax for a few days – it seems like that is how it works out every year. And you know, even though it is more work, it always goes smoothly every year. That is something I am very thankful for – coworkers who are likeminded and who also are dear friends. Even though Neighborhood News & Lifestyles is family-owned and operated, there are a few of us writers and graphic artists who aren’t related. But we feel like we are definitely part of

the Neighborhood News family and when the going gets tough, this “family” gets tougher! And then we go have some fun! I will be traveling to Carrabelle, Florida to have Thanksgiving with the whole dang family. And there are a lot of us! I’m so thankful for my family my hubby and kids especially! I’m so happy my parents have a beautiful piece of property where neighbors are scarce and wildlife is plentiful, and we can be as loud as we want! I’m thankful that my five siblings are healthy and happy. I can’t wait for all the cousins to fish off the dock, throw the football around and tease each other relentlessly. I’m thankful that we are a diverse family with all types – something that has made each of us grow as individuals. It isn’t always easy to accept others’ differences but when you have love, those differences become endearing. Life is constantly changing and throwing challenges our way, but the challenges, the sadness and the pain make the good times even better!

Community News Briefs Nelson Dentistry in Lutz Receives Program Accreditation Nelson Dentistry in Lutz recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). Nelson Dentistry is directed by Jay Nelson, DMD, and is located at 1928 Highland Oaks Boulevard in Lutz. “The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine congratulates Nelson Dentistry on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a dental sleep medicine facility,” said Dr. Gail Demko, AADSM president. “Nelson Dentistry is a significant resource to the local sleep medicine community and will provide the highest quality care for patients with sleep-disordered breathing.” To receive three-year accreditation, a dental sleep medicine facility must meet or exceed all standards for professional practice and patient care as designated by the AADSM. Those standards include the continuing education of staff; a developed set of poli-

6

cies and procedures for accepting, treating and billing patients; and adherence to approved standards for safety, customer service and patient follow-up. Dental sleep medicine is a growing segment of dentistry that focuses on managing snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with oral appliance therapy (OAT) – an effective alternative to the standard continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. Once a patient is diagnosed with primary snoring or obstructive sleep apnea by a Board-Certified sleep physician, a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine can provide treatment with OAT. OAT uses a “mouth guard-like” device worn only during sleep to maintain an open, unobstructed airway. OAT devices prevent the airway from collapsing by either holding the tongue or supporting the jaw in a forward position. The devices are also quiet, portable and easy to care for. The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) is a professional membership organization that provides educational resources for

dentists and promotes the use of oral appliance therapy for the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing. Learn more about oral appliance therapy and dental sleep medicine on the AADSM website, www.aadsm.org. Sexual Violence Task Force of Tampa Bay Offers Resource to Faith Leaders, Seeks Partnership Domestic violence and sexual violence often co-occur. Faith leaders are in a uniquely powerful position to help prevent this tragedy and to assist victims when abuse occurs. The Sexual Violence Task Force of Tampa Bay (SVTFTB) honors and appreciates the pivotal role of faith leaders and requests they partner with the Task Force to assist troubled families. According to Raana Simmons, Chair of the SVTFTB, “Victims of domestic or sexual violence often reach out first to their faith communities, especially if their leaders have expressed a willingness to assist families troubled by violence or abuse. The Task Force wishes to partner with faith communities in preventing violence and in providing a compassionate, effective response to those who seek help.”

To receive the free resource packet, any faith leader can contact Grace Terry, MSW, Impact Committee Chair of the SVTFTB, by calling 727-487-3207 or by emailing grace@grace-terry.com “We know that domestic and sexual violence occur in families that appear to be ‘normal’ families active in all varieties of faith communities,” stated Terry. “We offer this resource hoping it will be part of an on-going collaboration between faith communities and the SVTFTB to stop the cycle of violence.” The Resource Packet was compiled by a SVTFTB volunteer in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October and is

Gulfside Regional Hospice Offers Complimentary Advance Planning Tools In celebration of National Hospice Month this November, Gulfside Regional Hospice is offering complimentary copies of Five Wishes, an easyto-use tool with advance directives and planning information prior to becoming seriously ill. “Five Wishes is unique among all other living will and health agent forms because it looks to all of a person’s needs: medical, personal, emotional and spiritual,” said Linda Ward, Gulfside’s president and CEO. “This legal document lets family members and doctors know which person one chooses to make health care decisions if you become incapacitated, medical treatment desires, comfort level, and how one chooses to be treated.” Five Wishes is published by Aging with Dignity and was written with the help of The American Bar Association’s Commission on Law & Aging. It is legally valid under the advance directive statutes in most states, including Florida. The document contains five wishes: Wish One lets you choose the person you want to make decisions for you when you can’t make them for yourself. Wish Two is a living will. It helps you put in writing the kind of medical treatment you want or don’t want if you become seriously ill and can’t communicate to anyone. Smile! You’re in Good Hands at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry By Julie Kanehl American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is a general practice that has a focus in restorative, full-mouth rehabilitative dentistry. That simply means that they can do everything from providing a general dental cleaning to performing complete smile makeovers and everything in between. Located in the Mitchell Ranch Plaza, at the corner of S.R. 54 and Little Rd., American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry has been serving Trinity families for over 9 years. Ahmed Mostafa, DMD, is a dedicated and experienced dentist who has created a dental practice that is completely focused on providing his patients with excellent care. A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Mostafa knew he wanted to be a dentist when he saw his uncle practicing dentistry. He says, “I saw the difference that he made in people’s lives and it became my passion. It became

an obsession to improve people’s lives.” He was first drawn to the Tampa Bay area because of the weather, the people and the community. A family man, Dr. Mostafa enjoys spending time with his wife, Bobbie, and their three children. An avid outdoorsman, when he’s not at the office you’ll find him on the water with his family kayaking and water skiing. Since he opened his practice here in Trinity 9 years ago, he has continued his education and fed that passion to stay on top of his field. He even attended one year of Advanced Education in General Dentistry at the Dental Research Clinic located in Tampa. A Fellow at The International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Mostafa is a member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, West Coast Dental Association, West Pasco Dental Association and Hillsborough County Dental Research Clinic. Cosmetic Dentistry If changing people’s lives is Dr. Mostafa’s passion, you can guess how excited he gets when he has the opportunity to help people feel better about their smile. Many people are ashamed of their teeth, and even try to hide them by not smiling or by covering their mouths when they laugh. In today’s age, that isn’t necessary. Dr. Mostafa and his staff can create the smile of your dreams right there in the office. Cosmetic dentistry can be as simple as teeth whitening, or as life-changing as dental implants. They bond teeth, add tooth-colored crowns, create dental veneers and more. If you or someone you love is struggling with painful dentures, or is missing teeth that make it hard to eat, there are affordable solutions right here at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry. In fact, dental implants are a permanent solution to missing teeth, and they look, feel and operate the same way. For people with painful dentures or missing teeth, dental implants make an incredible improvement in their way of life. Patient Education is Key at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry When it comes to patient education, Dr. Mostafa and his staff are committed to making sure that there aren’t any surprises when it comes to a treatment plan. Dr. Mostafa says, “We have a CD that we play for the patient

about each treatment plan and what it is, and we make sure to repeat that information three to four times. We use pictures, use models. We make sure that our patients are comfortable before we begin any kind of treatment.” For patients who are perhaps a little intimidated by coming in to the dentist, Dr. Mostafa and his staff can make you comfortable by providing nitrous oxide or oral sedation with or without nitrous oxide. People don’t have to be afraid of the dentist when they visit American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.

Make an Appointment Today! Making an appointment is really easy at American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry; in fact, you can even request an appointment online, receive text and email reminders for appointments and maintain a dialogue with the staff through email. At American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry the entire staff is committed to helping your smile continue to be bright, healthy and beautiful. They are experienced, professional and dedicated to patient care. American Family & Cosmetic Dentistry accepts most insurance plans, and easy and affordable financing is available for all of his patients. Bayside Center for Plastic Surgery is Committed to Breast Cancer Reconstruction By Julie Kanehl October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a cause that is very close to many of our hearts because more than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. A breast cancer diagnosis is frightening, and the process of removing the cancer often involves removing part of the breast in a lumpectomy procedure, or the removal of one or more breasts through a mastectomy. This can be a devastating and emotional time for a patient and what happens next can be just as important as finding and treating the cancer itself, and that’s breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy is an important part of the healing process and the team at Bayside Plastic Surgery is committed to helping women who are going through breast cancer to feel

better and look their best once again. John B. Roach, Jr., D.O., M.S. earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000 from NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale and is a Board Certified surgeon. Currently on staff at Bayonet Point Regional Medical Center, he performs plastic, reconstructive and general surgery. Dr. Roach opened his practice in 2008 in Hudson and just recently moved his practice to the Lutz area specifically to be close to the Medical Center of Trinity where he performs all of his breast cancer reconstruction procedures at their Women’s Health and Obstetrics center. “Their Women’s Center is dedicated to helping women and guiding them through a difficult time,” says Dr. Roach. He adds, “There, women can expect single bed (private) rooms and state-of-the-art equipment.” Patients love the spa-like experience that they receive when they go to the Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and feel

comfortable in Dr. Roach’s experienced hands. Dr. Roach performs a myriad of plastic surgery procedures from breast augmentation to facelifts and tummy tucks. “What makes us unique is our dedication towards breast cancer reconstruction,” says Dr. Roach. According to Dr. Roach, it is important for patients to come to him before their lumpectomy or mastectomy to discuss the many details of reconstruction, so that they can know their options. “Studies show that breast cancer patients who undergo breast reconstruction have better outcomes, and we want women to understand all of their choices.” He adds, “There is an important decision to make between a mastectomy and a lumpectomy, and these choices can make a big difference during a breast reconstruction. There are choices, and we are dedicated to walking each of our patients through the entire process from start to finish.” The breast reconstruction procedure has come a long way over the years, and new advances in breast recon-

John B. Roach, DO, MS struction include nipple reconstruction as well. Dr. Roach can create breasts out of a completely flat chest after a double mastectomy using tissue expanders, or in the case of a single mastectomy, create one new breast, and augment the other breast to match.

Women no longer have to feel like they lost their femininity or feel like they are left with a deformity because of their breast cancer surgery. Dr. Roach can completely create a breast that is both aesthetically pleasing and natural looking. Many patients are unaware of this, but unlike regular elective plastic surgery procedures, breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy or mastectomy is often covered by insurance. One patient writes to Dr. Roach, “Words cannot express my gratitude to you. You are a wonderful surgeon and have made me a whole woman again.” Dr. Roach says, “A lot of times patients say, ’Doc, while you’re in there can you fix some other things?’ and I am happy to do that. It’s important to know that breast reconstruction is a stepped or staged process, but it is not unusual for patients who are coming in for their nipple reconstruction to also have a tummy tuck or a facelift.” Dr. Roach performed more than 1,000 reconstructive surgeries just last year, so he is completely dedicated, and actively experienced in this kind of plastic surgery. When he meets with his patients he takes the time to explain, in detail, the different stages of a breast reconstruction using a power point presentation that details how he will do what he does, and show you pictures of each phase. “It’s a huge psychological burden

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

to have to go through breast cancer and reconstructive surgery, but the majority of the time people are pleased with their outcomes,” says Dr. Roach. “A Holistic Approach to your Inner Beauty” Believe it or not, plastic surgery is an affordable and realistic way to make a big impact on your life. If you are not feeling good about the way you look, you can do something about it! Whether you are feeling self conscious about your wrinkles, your breasts or any other part of your body, Dr. Roach will sit down with you and explain to you how he can help during a free consultation. You should ask the questions that concern you, because there are very few things that the doctor hasn’t seen before, or that he can’t help you with. How we feel about our bodies truly effects how we feel about ourselves and how we relate to other people in our lives. Improving your body image can have a tremendous improvement in your life. Breast augmentation is the most popular procedure at Bayside Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dr. Roach’s calm, approachable manner makes the process an easy one. Whether you would like to increase your bust size, decrease your cup size or even balance out your physical appearance, Dr. Roach can help. While some women want to

make a statement with their surgery, others want their breasts to look as natural as possible. Each patient at Bayside Center is unique, as is their surgery, their recovery and their results. According to their website, “Dr. Roach uses breast implants made of FDA approved, medical grade, and (L–R) Nicole Santiago (Office Manager) Ashley biocompatible textured or Rodriguez (Aesthetician) John B. Save Time and Money with Grout Tech By Kim Thomas Before you spend thousands of dollars remodeling and re-tiling your bathroom or kitchen be sure to call Grout Tech for a FREE estimate on cleaning or repairing old dingy tile and grout. Grout Tech can breathe new life into your existing tile work, making everything shine like new at a fraction of the cost. Grout Tech is a family owned business serving Pinellas and Pasco Counties. With nearly ten years of experience in the industry, Grout Tech specializes in cleaning and sealing tile and grout, re-coloring grout, re-caulking showers and tubs, and repairing grout and broken tiles. Grout Tech will renew existing grout and tile to its original beauty by cleaning and maintaining the tile and grout lines. With the help of Grout Tech, even the dirtiest and oldest of floors can be restored and renewed to their original beauty and splendor. We saved so much money by having the grout in our shower resurfaced and the tile cleaned and it looks brand new,” John shares. BJ is happy to set your appointment, come out and give you a free estimate. She stresses, “It is important for me to be respectful of our customers’ time so I will always arrive at the time we set.” In addition to always arriving in a timely manner, BJ says that they can keep their prices low because they are a family owned business and not a franchise. She explains, “What many people don’t understand is that franchises are often forced to charge more for their services because they have to maintain their franchise

fees, but not with Grout Tech.” Not only does Grout Tech keep its rates competitive, but the company will also honor any other quote as long as it is in writing. Because grout is a porous material, trying to remove stains is seemingly impossible. BJ explains, “Color sealing grout lines is one of the many services we offer and it is definitely the most effective way to create a perfect, new look.” Using a step-by-step process, Grout Tech begins by using a cleansing product to remove all bacteria and surface dirt with special machinery. They will then apply a color seal (of your choice). Once the sealer is applied the

grout lines will be permanently protected from any stains. The color seal also guarantees against cracking, chipping and peeling. Additionally, they will also cosmetically fix or replace chipped or cracked tiles, making your bathroom or kitchen tile like new again. Carla Bartow, a satisfied customer, shares her experience, “When BJ came out to give us a quote, she looked at the job and I could tell immediately that she knew what she was talking about. We had our family room, kitchen and dining room re-grouted. They also re-grouted the tub, shower and base of our toilet in our bathroom. They were fantastic! Not only were they professional and reliable

but they also completed the job much faster than we had anticipated.” Excellent Service Leads to Referrals Throughout the years, Grout Tech has grown through its many referrals from happy customers. People really appreciate that Grout Tech saves them time and money, but it is the excellent service provided that has really helped this business grow. Doris Strathearn, another Grout Tech success story, said that before calling Grout Tech her bathroom and guest bathroom shower and floor grout had deteriorated over time and the tiles were dull

and stained. “The tile was in good condition but it was stained so we had Grout Tech come out and clean them and they turned out very well.” They were so pleased that they have already referred Grout Tech to neighbors in their community. Grout Tech can also remove and recaulk around sinks, baseboards, tubs and showers serving to clean up old moldy areas and keep your dry wall free from water damage. From old to new in just one day!
