November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Month In 1906, German neurologist, Dr. Alois Alzheimer performed an autopsy of a 56-year-old woman who was exhibiting problems with memory and disorientation. He specifically uncovered two signs in her

brain - neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques. Over 100 years have passed and these identifying markers are the only definitive means of diagnosis. Its origin and cure still remains very elusive. There are a number of drugs prescribed for the patient but they do not offer a long-term treatment or cure. Despite tremendous research advances, this disease continues to affect the lives of over 5 million Americans and their families, with over 500,000 patients in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, the Alzheimer’s Family Organization’s service area of Central Florida has more than 100,000 patients at this time. As the Baby Boomer generation grows older, it is estimated that the National figure will rise to 16 million by 2030. Currently, one in ten individuals over 65 is reported to have the disease, and this number increases to one of two at age 85. The mission of the Alzheimer’s Family Organization is to provide educational programs, support services

and assistance to caregivers, families, and individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. We have a number of programs and services to help families and they include over 40 support groups, respite care, wanderer’s identification, and other services to ease the burden. The Alzheimer’s Family Organization can be reached toll free at 888-496-8004 or on the web at www.alzheimersfamily.org. Local Ballet Students Volunteer at an Arts Center for disABLED Children This past summer, ballet students from local dance studios were busy volunteering at TherAbilities Performing Arts Center, LLC. (TPAC), a therapy and performing arts center for children and adults with disAbilities. These volunteers have been dancing from an early age and are now giving back to the community through service in two areas that they are passionate about: dance and special needs children. TPAC is an organization that provides specialized therapy services and extracurricular activities for chil-

dren and adults with disABILITIES in a therapeutic environment that promotes their participation in these activities. Classes are provided or facilitated by therapists, special education teachers and certified instructors. All TPAC classes are designed to be therapeutic and take into consideration each student’s individual needs. TPAC’s owner, Lourdes Quinones - a licensed Physical Therapist, collaborates with instructors to create a plan that will therapeutically address each individual’s needs as the student participates in a highly desirable activity, such as adapted ballet, Tae Kwon Do, music therapy, drumming or art. Other services include individual Physical, Occupational, Speech and Music Therapy. Adapted Music Lessons, homework assistance and private tutoring are also available at TPAC. Thus, individuals with disAbilities can now receive the services they need and the social activities that they desire in one convenient location, which is: 225 W. Busch Blvd., Suite #102, Tampa, FL 33612. At TPAC, volunteers enjoy a unique opportunity to learn methods

of teaching and working with special needs individuals, in a context that is both fun and therapeutic. Volunteers are exposed to a variety of professions in the healthcare and education fields that may help them decide whether to pursue any of these careers as college majors upon graduation from high school, which is a True American Teach-In opportunity for them. Volunteers get in-context experience with these professions; which makes the experience relevant and valuable to students. Take a few minutes to watch this video of our high school volunteers teaching one of our special needs clients to memorize an adapted dance routine at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= pGC6J_KQBMk. House of Hobbies, Building Memories for the Young at Heart By Julie Kanehl For more than 50 years, House of Hobbies has been the hobby shop of choice for locals, and when you step inside and meet the owners, Barbara and Bob Kotimaki, it’s no surprise as to why. House of Hobbies is far more than a place to buy building kits, puzzles, unique toys, and remote controlled boats, cars, and helicopters. No, House of Hobbies is more than that. It’s a place to rebuild memories from the past, whether it’s a model of that 1969 Chevy Camaro, or the bomber that your dad piloted in World War II. It’s a shop full of possibilities, especially the kind that are made when you put your mind and your hands to work, together. Whether you’re starting with something like a snap-together model, or you’re creating a highly detailed, perfectly scaled model with an engine roaring to life when you’re finished, there’s something fun for everyone at House of Hobbies. Located at 37700 US Highway 19 North in Palm Harbor, House of

10

Barbara and Bob Kotimaki

Hobbies is just one block north of Alderman Road, and approximately one block south of Klosterman Road, just a smidge south of the Muvico Palm Harbor 10 Theater. At their current location for the last 11 years, and in business for 51 years, you might remember one of their original locations. The first House of Hobbies was down in Clearwater on Ft. Harrison, and the second was up in New Port

Richey. Bob ran one and Barbara ran the other, and 11 years ago, they decided to consolidate and have one store that they would run together. Fully family owned and operated, House of Hobbies draws hobbyists from all over the Tampa Bay Area and further because for many, the shop and its owners are a personal piece of history. Chuck Gulotta said, “I’ve been coming to House of Hobbies for 40 years. Back then, me and my father would come to the Ft. Harrison location. I got my first model boat here, my first rocket here. I probably had over a hundred over the years…Even though I live in Denver now, every time I come this way I have to come in.” Chuck and Bob stand in the doorway swapping stories and talking like the old friends they are, and that’s the way it goes at House of Hobbies. People come in looking for a model of a car they drove when they were 20, and Bob and Barbara help them find the exact year, make, model and specific horsepower if necessary. They use

computers, but the truth is Bob and Barbara know a lot of it by heart. Generations of people come to House of Hobbies, and that’s the part that is most exciting to the owners. It’s when someone comes in with his or her children or grandchildren to find something to create together. It’s teaching children to use their hands and build something – creating more than a boat, train, or a model – but memories that will last forever. In today’s technologically savvy world, the kids are working their parents iPads before they can form complete sentences, so let’s face it, there’s something satisfying when you see your child sit down and actually find pure delight in a puzzle, or when they sit down to build and create something the good, old-fashioned way. Barbara says, “Most people who come in are looking for an automobile or an aircraft that they were connected to in some way. Many from WWII…what keeps us going though, is the generations of hobbyists that enter our door. It’s the grandfather or father coming in to purchase his son

It keeps us excited about our business to see the enthusiasm of young children witnessing a world from the past. Combining the new access to knowledge that kids have these days, our hobbies give them an edge to understanding history.” What is a Hobby Shop? If you’re like the many locals who have been driving by without stopping

in, it’s ok. Maybe you didn’t know about the world of creativity that was waiting inside! Maybe you weren’t sure it was for you. Maybe you thought it was a toy store! Well, it is kind of like a toy store! But, it’s more like a toy store for every age range, and definitely, most definitely, for the young at heart. The hobby business is mostly heart, and the truth is, that’s not something you can buy online. For

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

the hardcore hobbyist, it’s important to go to a place where the people really know their stuff, and after all this time, there’s no better place to come if you’re looking for something special. They’ll take the time to help you find exactly what you’re looking for, and if it’s not in the shop, they’ll get it for you. If you want a train set that will delight your entire family, House of Hobbies has quite a selection carrying all scales of trains, so whether you want to have a quality train set to bring out over the holidays, or you want to rebuild a specific train to have out all year, there are miles and miles of options. Lionel trains are really popular at House of Hobbies. Whether you’re into rockets, planes, tanks, trains, automobiles, ships, motorcycles, toys, puzzles, even dollhouses, there’s something fun and amazing waiting that you can enjoy in solitude or that your entire family can enjoy putting together. You don’t have to be an expert, or great with your hands to get into a hobby and whether you’re 5 or 105, there is

something fun to create at House of Hobbies. Barbara says, “We have this great new line of models based on Disney’s Cars, and these have been really selling fast!” She adds, “Some of the newest kits are created for both building and playing!” Once you’ve built your model, you’ve got to deck it out, right? House of Hobbies has everything you need to create an amazing model, whether it’s for decoration, for flight, for a school project, or just for fun. You will find essentials like engines (gas or electric), paint supplies, and accessories for every kind of model you can imagine. Their aisles offer models in many materials and for different purposes, from plastic to wood, and from easy snap-together kits to plankon-plank recreation. House of Hobbies also has a great selection of limited edition kits and collector’s edition kits, and in a wide variety – from military to space fantasy. Jen Kotimaki says, “What makes us unique is that we specialize in many different kinds of hobbies, instead of just focusing on a select few!” If you’re shopping for that certain someone who “has everything” this holiday season, you’ve got to check out House of Hobbies. Go in and meet Bob, Barbara, and their daughter Jen, and you’ll be happy that you did. Be prepared, though, that you’ll most likely find more than a kit or a car, or a model train; you may find a life-long love of hobbies! House of Hobbies is located at 37700 US 19 N in Palm Harbor. They are open Mon. – Sat., 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.; closed Sun. For more information, call the shop at (727) 943-5800 or visit www.houseofhobbiesfl.com.

Life is Sweet at Sugardarlings Cones & Cupcakes! By Katie Thomas & Dara Tucker Sugardarlings Cones & Cupcakes, home to the best tasting, freshest cupcakes in the Tampa Bay Area, is a sweet business that has taken flight over the past three years. At Sugardarlings, the ice cream is delicious, but the cupcakes are the talk of the town! With a new warehouse and three storefronts located in New Port Richey, Palm Harbor and Lutz, Sugardarlings is celebrating growth and success from humble beginnings. Tasty creations are made from scratch every morning by talented bakers and plenty of love is put into each and every delicious flavor. You could call Sugardarlings’ cupcakes “love muffins,” a perfect nickname for the perfectly moist, flavorful cupcakes that are made with tender loving care. Jessica Beebe, owner and baker at Sugardarlings Cones and Cupcakes, opened her original store in Trinity, off Old CR 54 in February 2010. She opened her first store with goals insight to become a friendly and affordable, neighborhood ice cream parlor – Jessica never expected for her business to take off all because of a simple sweet

14

treat, the mighty cupcake. Jessica originally intended for cupcakes to be a side item at her first storefront, she actually started making them in her toaster oven! Within Jess’s first week of opening her doors, she sold over 300 cupcakes and immediately realized she would need a bigger oven to meet the demands of customers. At the time of opening Sugardarlings, Jess was working at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs where she had been employed for over 13 years. Jess’s job primarily focused on food and beverage hospitality, a passion she has always possessed. Little did she realize, her attention would be needed at Sugardarlings full-time! Jess had no idea that within three years she would have three storefronts and a warehouse, all dedicated to providing handmade cupcakes to loyal fans of the original “love muffin.” An idea of a neighborhood ice cream shop turned into a local cupcake empire – sweet dreams are made of these! The name Sugardarlings was inspired by Jess’s grandmother. She would always tell her grandchildren,

Sugardarlings’ delectable cupcakes are such a sweet treat! Pauline’s Pretty in Pink & Pineapple Right Side Up are just two of many specialty cupcakes. “Come over her darling and get some sugar.” Jess’s mother reminded her of her grandmother’s saying and Jess began calling her own children her “sugardarlings.” When she decided to open up shop, she knew it was the perfect fit for her store, paying homage to her grandmother, mother, children and future sweet generations to come. Jess treats customers as if they are her own

family and is happy to help out the local community in any way she can. Some might even say that the only thing sweeter than the Sugardarlings team, are the cupcakes and ice cream they serve! darlings’ cupcakes are the perfect combination of sweet, savory delicious fun! Jess offers traditional flavors like Red Velvet, Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Snickerdoodle, but she also incorporates specialty flavors that include Key Lime, Cannoli and Exotic Bliss (Jess’s favorite) which is filled with pineapple and cranberry topped off with hibiscus frosting! Jess has even gone as far as coming up with fabulous savory flavors that are perfect for dinner parties with friends; imagine how much fun it will be for guests to guess the unexpected flavors such as Sweet Corn and Pulled Pork, Spicy Chocolate, Maple Bacon or Wasabi cupcakes. Talk about an adventurous twist on the conventional styles! Many of Jess’s regulars comment that it is a blast to pair the savory cupcakes with beer and wine, making for a delicious and fun way to get the conversation started! Sugardarlings Cones & Cupcakes always introduces new seasonal flavors during the holidays. This year’s fall flavors include Pumpkin, Caramel Apple, Sweet Potato Casserole and Pecan Pie! There truly is no easier or more delicious treat than a batch of Sugardarlings’ cupcakes to bring to a holiday party! Sugardarlings’ cupcakes are made using quality and wholesome ingredients such as sweet cream butter, whole

milk, whipping cream, fresh fruit juices and rich quality chocolates just to name a few. Each and every cupcake is made to make you smile with every bite! Jess is currently turning out gluten-free cupcakes for the gluten-sensitive and plans on transforming her Palm Harbor store location into a completely glutenfree cupcake haven! Jess says, “I have been super blessed! To think, I started baking out of a toaster oven one pan at a time! I could not have grown my business without an amazing staff. Our Sugardarlings family is the backbone to our amazing business. I also thank my family so much for being so supportive. My girls have had to sacrifice a lot of time without mommy around and my amazing husband was always available, so I could focus and grow my business.” Jess’s growth over the past three years has allowed her to accommodate large commercial orders; in order to do this efficiently, she opened a warehouse. The warehouse is over 3,000 square feet and will help alleviate space restraints in her other stores. The warehouse is designated for baking and storage for now, but Jess hopes to host tours, field trips and tastings! Sugardarlings’ new warehouse is centrally located to all three stores, in order to

provide the ever fresh, made-daily cupcakes to each deserving customer! At this time, Sugardarlings’ cupcakes are served at a few specialty candy shops and several medical facilities in the area including several Morton Plant Mease locations, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center of Trinity. Sugardarlings’ cupcakes can be bought in store for $2, add 25 cents extra for specialty flavors. Affordability is one of Jess’s baselines for her business. She truly wants everyone to enjoy a little taste of Sugardarlings heaven. Jess and her team make cupcakes for weddings, baby showers, birthday parties, family get-togethers, you name it and there will be cupcakes! Sugardarlings has the ability to handle large corporate orders, school functions and basically any event where people want to be treated to a sweet treat! Jess says, “There was no doubt in my mind that I would be successful because I firmly believe whatever you put

your heart and soul into, you can make successful.” Lucky for us, Jess decided to put her heart and soul into the delicious and fabulous love muffins! Master Jeweler Tom MacKinnon has been expertly perfecting his craft since his first job at a jewelry store. The owner of a jewelry store that Tom worked at as a high school student in Panama City, Florida recognized that he had exceptional talent and encouraged him to hone his skills and learn the art of jewelry creation. After high school, Tom moved to Sarasota and apprenticed for five years with a wellrespected designer named Terry Coffrin. In 1985 Tom began to work at his bench performing “trade work,” which allowed him to do repairs and to create jewelry for stores in his area. He worked as a jewelry manufacturer for four years, and managed a trade shop for five years before he became a jeweler for Littman’s Jewelers at Countryside Mall, where he stayed for 11 years. In 2004, Tom opened MacKinnon Jewelers. Tom MacKinnon has earned his Diamond Degree and his Pearl Degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Tom MacKinnon truly appreciates his experienced staff, which includes Debbie Rocchio, Gale Arnold, Bunny Calligan and Patrick Lainhart. “Everybody in the store has some form of formal jewelry training,” said Tom, “They have their Accredited Jewelry Professional Degree from the Gemological Institute of America, or something more. In fact, one of our sales personnel, Gale Arnold, is our resident Graduate Gemologist.” Everybody in the store loves jewelry and can help you find that something that will feel special to you. Working with a customer who said she rarely wears her jewelry because she doesn’t work anymore, Debbie said,

“Every day is a special day! Every day is a reason to celebrate and wear your jewelry. Even if you are just going to the grocery store, a beautiful, simple diamond necklace is perfect to wear!” MacKinnon Jewelers has an amazing array of fine jewelry in every style, from classic to modern, and from smart to sassy. Serves Up Delicious Fun! By Dara Tucker Trinity became home to the first TCBY Self-Serve on the West Coast of Florida on August 19, 2011, when owners Patti and Jay Silar opened the store with their daughter and Marketing Manager Jenifer Silar-Mills. Opening a local TCBY Self-Serve franchise idea first came to Patti and Jay about three years ago when they enjoyed visiting a TCBY Self-Serve store in Charlotte, North Carolina. With classic favorites like Golden Vanilla, Chocolate and White Chocolate Mousse and many monthly rotating flavors – all at 96, 98, or 100 percent fat free – it’s understandable why Patti and Jay decided TCBY Self-Serve

would be a great business to open back home in Trinity. “The Country’s Best Yogurt,” or TCBY, originally opened in 1981, and is the country’s oldest frozen yogurt company. The company has high health and quality standards that also appeal to Patti Silar who is a retired RN. Patti says, “TCBY purchases products that are of high quality. Fresh fruit is sanitized to meet TCBY requirements, and we don’t use frozen fruit because it turns to mush on our topping bar. Our canned fruits are in their own juices instead of syrup.” Jay Silar adds, “Our yogurts and most of our toppings are also Kosher and Halal certified. We want to meet our customer’s needs.

Nine of their flavor choices are soft serve frozen yogurts (including the delicious new Honey Vanilla Greek yogurt, which has become a local favorite) and one is a refreshing Ruby Red Grapefruit sorbet. Their topping bar has over 50 different toppings to choose from, including fresh fruit, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and kid favorites such as gummy bears and chocolate rocks! You can top it off with hot chocolate fudge, warm walnuts in syrup, hot marshmallow crème and hot caramel. Another option is to ask the staff to put your creation through the Shiver Machine, to blend your treat. Cakes and pies make a great takehome option with flavors such as Red Velvet Mousse cake with White Chocolate Mousse yogurt on Red Velvet cake, topped with white frosting and red velvet cake crumbs. Pies include Turtle Ripple pie, Cookies and Crème, and Peanut Buttery Fudge pie, which swirls chocolate and vanilla yogurt with ribbons of peanut butter on a fudge covered chocolate cookie crust. This treat is too good to wait for a birthday as an excuse to eat it! Many cakes and pies are available for immediate purchase, and can be personalized. Jay, Patti, and Jenifer are involved

in many community projects and fundraisers, like Taste of Trinity and Long Leaf Fall Festival. As a community member said, “Jenifer Silar-Mills and her family have been a constant source of support for our community. They continue to shower our students at Seven Springs Middle School with opportunities to enjoy the oh-so tasty yogurt through organizing dine-out’s, as well as gift cards for Student Achievement awards. As for my family and myself, every time we’ve visited the store, we’ve been greeted with smiles, happiness, and delectable delights. All in all, we are so thrilled to have this family (and their store) in the Trinity area. They can never, ever, EVER go anywhere!” TCBY provides the Trinity area with a scrumptious and healthy yogurt shop that is perfect for taking the kids for a treat, birthday celebrations, or date night. When you go make sure to ask for a Rewards card that gives you 1 point for every dollar you spend, and after 30 points you earn a $3 coupon, or a stamp card that rewards you with a free yogurt up to $5 after nine stamps. TCBY of Trinity is located at 3140 Little Road in the Mitchell Ranch Plaza. They are open Sunday – Thursday, Noon – 9 p.m. and Friday – Saturday, Noon – 10 p.m. For information call (727) 3751177. GetMoreOffers.Com is the New Face of Real Estate By Julie Kanehl Are you moving? Would you like to put your house on the market, but aren’t sure where to start or who you can trust? Have you thought about selling the house yourself, but aren’t sure how to get started? Do you wish you didn’t have to give so much commission to Realtors®, when you’re happy to do a majority of the work yourself, like designing and creating an MLS listing and showing your house? GetMoreOffers.Com is the affordable way to list your home, giving sellers the ultimate control over the sale, and on a site that attracts more than 100,000 buyers per month! All of this while being backed by a licensed experienced Real Estate Company and a Broker who sticks to his guns. This is the new face of real estate. Long ago, when the real estate world was a different place, a Realtor® would be the only one who could find you a listing, but with today’s technology, usually it’s the

30

buyer that ends up finding the home they want to live in by finding the listing themselves online and through websites that show MLS listings. Clearly, the market and the face of real estate have changed, so doesn’t it makes sense that the way we would go about selling our houses would change as well? Today, homeowners are more hands-on than they were in bygone years, and every penny counts. Selling your home by yourself can be an overwhelming experience, but handing all of the control over to a Realtor® who takes a chunk of the percentage home at the end of the day can make sellers feel like they’re losing on the deal. GetMoreOffers.Com is a safe middle ground for sellers, which gives them control of the process while saving them money. No-Nonsense, Discount Real Estate for Everyone ADDvantage Real Estate, as the authorized Florida brokerage of GetMoreOffers.Com, offers discount

listing services all over Florida, from Jacksonville and the Panhandle, all the way down to the Keys. Co-created by Broker Keith Gordon, who has nearly 30 years of experience in Florida, GetMoreOffers.Com offers discount real estate that can be tailor-made to suit each homeowner. Together with Erin Knorr, CEO of GetMoreOffers.com, who brought the amazing software to life, they’ve helped thousands of people sell their homes safely and affordably. Typically, in a full-service listing, buyers have to sign an agreement that states that they will work with one particular Realtor® for a period of time, usually six months, which eliminates the possibility of selling the home themselves in that time, even if a buyer shows up on their doorstep. Also, a 6% commission is generally shared between the listing agent and the selling agent, which means more

ally a savings of around 3% of the final sale of the house. According to www.GetMoreOffers.Com, with an ADDvantage flat fee MLS listing, if you are successful in finding a buyer for your property without the assistance of a real estate agent, then you would pay NO commission; just the ADDvantage flat fee. It’s that simple.” GetMoreOffers.com gives sellers “real time” control of the selling of their home, by offering sellers the opportunity to purchase an MLS listing at an affordable flat fee, as well as creating an interactive portal where sellers can manage their listing, personalize it, add pictures and make adjustments to price, and even determine the buyer’s agent’s fee. Gordon says, “Everything happens in real time, seamlessly, and electronically.” Yuri Zygala said, “We just closed on the sale of our home and could not be happier with the results. We chose to use GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Estate after a sale fell through using our listing agent. Making this choice was the best thing we did. Selling by owner and being the ones scheduling

all showings we made over $15,000 profit above what we would have made using a listing agent. We listed on a Sunday, and had a signed cash offer 7 days later. I highly recommend using GetMoreOffers.com for your next home sale.” The GetMoreOffers.Com Advantage Having control doesn’t mean you won’t get the support you need during the sale of your home. GetMoreOffers.com offers amazing customer service to both the seller, and the interested parties, whether buyers or Realtors®. For a flat fee of just $299, your house can be “on the market” and on MLS within 24 hours. Your listing will benefit from premium internet marketing that offers up to 25 photos, a guarantee that it will show on your local boards, will be Showcased on Realtor.com as well as on partnered sites, including Zillow, Homes.com, Craigslist, Yahoo Real Estate, Trulia and more. The best part is that you, the seller, will control everything from the price of your house to when you’re available

to show your house to interested parties. Now, if you love the idea of taking that hands-on approach, but want the support and backing of a Real Estate agent for making sure that your buyers are pre-qualified, or to know when to negotiate, or when not to, then you might prefer GetMoreOffers.Com’s Professional ADDvantage Program, which includes everything from negotiating to the organizing and preparing all of the legal documentation that goes along with selling a home. This hybrid program is the best of both worlds, and is a huge value to sellers. This program is only $499 upfront, and just 3/4 of 1% due at closing (with a minimum of $1500). Gordon says, “Sellers who go with this program also get me, and I’m a no-nonsense discount broker. I use non-traditional negotiating techniques that save sellers money.” He adds, “I do this because I believe that buyers don’t go away after they’ve made an offer. If they’ve made an offer, they’ve already committed to buying your house, so I don’t always believe in countering.” While Keith Gordon also offers full service real estate services through his full service brokerage, Principal 1 Realty, he says many sellers and even full service agents utilize the discount services of GetMoreOffers.com and ADDvantage Real Es-

tate due to the value and extensive coverage of MLS systems throughout the state. (Many agents get listings outside of their board coverage area and look to GetMoreOffers.com to list their out-of-area listings rather than be subjected to the expensive fees to join the MLS themselves.) Since GetMoreOffers.com is affiliated with Frontier National Title and Patriot Lending, all of a seller’s real estate needs can be handled inhouse, from selling a house, or being approved, to buying a new one. Jurgen Schmidt said, “As a Realtor/Broker at a full-service firm, when it came time to list my out-ofstate property I never thought I would consider using a discount Brokerage agency, but… I’m so glad I did! Keith and his team at ADDvantage were awesome, the service and support were exceptional and they got results in no time! The entire experience far exceeded my expectations and I wouldn’t hesitate for an instant to use ADDvantage again or recommend them to everyone.” If you are looking to sell your house and save money while you’re at it, try GetMoreOffers.com and experience the new face of real estate. GetMoreOffers.com is open and online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To speak to an agent or to get more information, please call 1-877-232-9695.

Florida Hospital North Pinellas Aims to be Your First Choice! By Julie Kanehl Florida Hospital North Pinellas is focused on becoming your hospital of choice in your time of need. Whether you need an ER, are seeking cancer treatment, or you are looking for a way to live healthier, the Florida Hospital North Pinellas is a whole new hospital in terms of funding, research, technology, staff, physicians and outreach, while retaining the heart of the hospital that has stood in its place for more than 85 years. The history of this hospital is rather unique and goes back all the way to 1927 when Tarpon Springs Municipal Hospital was the second hospital in Pinellas County. With only two floors and twelve beds, the Tarpon Springs Municipal Hospital later became Tarpon Springs General Hospital, Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, and then Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital & UCH. However, Florida Hospital North Pinellas is far more than a new logo on an old product. Florida Hospital of North Pinellas takes an entirely new approach, especially to pa-

tient care, and when combined with the influx of funding, resources and the commitment from knowledgeable and experienced doctors, nurses and staff members, it’s no surprise that the hospital’s Grand Opening in 2012 was themed as a “New Day in Health Care.” Located in Tarpon Springs at 1395 South Pinellas Avenue, Florida Hospital North Pinellas is convenient to many surrounding areas, and it aims to become the hospital of choice for many residents, locally, regionally and beyond. Under the umbrella of Adventist Health System (AHS), Florida Hospital North Pinellas is now part of the largest, not-for-profit, Protestant health care provider in the nation. Now, Adventist Health System supports 44 hospitals in 10 states and employs nearly 55,000 individuals. AHS, locally known as Florida Hospital, has five locations around the

Tampa Bay Area, and 24 in the state. Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Jennifer Candler is proud of the balance that Florida Hospital North Pinellas has been able to achieve between embracing the community that has been here from the beginning, and completely revamping the hospital’s approach to patient care

and staying focused on its mission. “The patient experience is so important to us, and we are a Christianbased hospital system that works to live that every day,” said Candler. “We are now truly our community’s health care partner, and can provide the resources and world-class care that our region’s residents deserve.”

Patient Paul Hoover said, “I’ve been to Florida Hospital North Pinel-

las over the last 15 months on three distinct situations as a patient. First was the Emergency Room. I arrived on a busy Saturday night and within two minutes of arriving I was taken back to the friendly staff and I saw the doctor shortly thereafter. I was on my way after some lab work within one hour and 25 minutes. Staff was great and Dr. White was very friendly, kind, and knowledgeable. I’ve been back two other times and each time was excellent. Following a procedure I received two follow up phone calls from the friendly nursing staff and a card thanking me for choosing Florida Hospital. I would choose no other place for my care. The facility is topnotch, and the staff are very friendly, and the physicians are incredible.”

East Lake’s Two Most Prestigious Golf Clubs Offers New Golf and Social Memberships Once private Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Country Club are now joined together by local owner Ace Golf. Both clubs now feature golf and social membership pricing at reduced rates never before seen in the region. Golfer’s and social members alike can now enjoy the benefits of two upscale golf and social clubs at a price less than half of what it cost five years ago, and far below other clubs in the area. Ace Golf’s revolutionary, new golf membership rates are deeply discounted during the slower, six-month “off-season” from May to October when most people play less golf, and greens fees drop. This is a radical change from other clubs that charge the same, higher rate year-round. With competitors offering membership at only one club for $300500/month, Ace Golf’s membership offers incredible value at $79$154/month single to $114194/month. Family Rates are an

38

average of a discounted, off-season rate and an in-season rate. Potential applicants are encouraged to apply immediately, as only 125 of these memberships will be offered at each club, and only limited public tee times will be available to nonmembers. For those who enjoy golf and the camaraderie of others who like to play competitively or socially, an Ace Golf membership at Wentworth and Crescent Oaks offers added benefits like unlimited free greens fees, preferential advanced tee times, walking privileges not offered at other courses, complimentary range balls, men’s/ladies’ and couples’ leagues, golf privileges at sister club Pebble Creek Golf Club, and two free guest passes every month to share the clubs with friends and business associates. Whether you join as a member or play Wentworth or Crescent Oaks as a walk-in guest, you will find two enjoyable, contrasting, top-condition Steve

Smyers design golf courses, pleasant service, and well-maintained facilities. Both golf courses are recently renovated with new greens, manicured fairways, and tees to suit all levels of play. The clubs also boast updated clubhouses, fitness and tennis facilities (Crescent Oaks), new restaurants, and active social programs including activities for kids, couples, and singles. With these courses, you will see and make new friends and experience the game at your pace and pleasure.

For short-term residents, Ace Golf offers seasonal memberships. At the new lower rates, many Canadian and northern members are joining year-round at the same cost that they previously paid for six-month memberships. Those that don’t play golf are taking advantage of another membership “first”: free social membership. While most clubs offer social memberships at $100-150/month, Ace Golf offers single memberships at $39/month,

family $59/month. When you spend that amount monthly at Wentworth or Crescent Oaks restaurants, the membership is free. With social membership, you meet a great new group of friends and always have special meals, events, and holiday celebrations to look forward to – no more sitting at home and wondering what to do! Enjoy benefits like: private dining with special theme nights (Italian, Greek, Tapas, Seafood/fish fry); Sunday brunches and Easter and Mother’s Day Brunch Celebrations and holiday meals over Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and other holidays; special events and activities like dances, card games, “Newlywed Game” night, car shows, Tai Chi and even celebrity visits. Privileges are offered at Wentworth’s Member Dining Room and Mulligans Irish Pub as well as Crescent Oaks Grand Oaks Restaurant and Ballroom, so you get a variety of dining experiences and social programs. Both Wentworth and Crescent Oaks Golf Clubs are conveniently located off of East Lake Road near Keystone Road. Crescent Oaks Country Club (crescentoaksgolf.com) is 1/2 mile north of Keystone at 3300 Cres-

cent Oaks Blvd., Tarpon Springs. The club opened in 1989 on 198 acres abutting the Brooker Creek Preserve and features a par-72 golf course, driving range, 8 tennis courts (6 clay), large banquet center and a new fitness center. To make a tee time, phone (727) 937-4653. Sister course, Wentworth Golf Club (wentworthgolfclub.org), is at the first light south of Keystone Road. “Barkdoll Massage” Continued from page 1 Florida, Karla is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, and is Nationally Board Certified. Karla’s massages can be done anywhere – at home, poolside, or at the office. Most of her clients choose the room in their house that offers the least distractions, and there she creates a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them so that she can create the best personalized massage experience. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!” Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind

42

of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. This massage is very popular all over the world because of its light, long, and slow strokes that relax your cares and worries away. If you are interested in trying something a little different, hot stone massages use something called warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage. According to Karla, the warm stones dissolve muscle tension and induce a deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a

fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity recently said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kind-hearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows that create a comfortable position just for her during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, which is why Barkdoll

Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple recently wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!”

If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! My Massage with Karla I am a huge fan of massages. I go every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m not busy with my family or writing for the Neighborhood News, I’m like most moms and am usually concerned with everyone else’s comfort over my own. That’s why I was so excited to be given the chance to experience one of Karla’s massages by the staff at Neighborhood News. (Thanks Jim!) Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a

babysitter for the kids! On the evening of my massage appointment, I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby, and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. A true professional, Karla even wears a clinical massage uniform. Within just a few minutes Karla had set up the massage table and was set up and ready to go. I was really impressed with how quickly the room I had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to me about what kind of massage treatment I wanted, and she asked if I had any injuries that she needed to be aware of. We decided on a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me many different aromatherapy options from rose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally at ease, and while she stepped out of the room, I comfortably got onto the massage table and got settled. When Karla came back in a moment later, she put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can see that a massage with Karla would be a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates, but one of the best parts about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because her pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. From now on, I’m going to take better care of myself, and that includes having massage treatments from Barkdoll Massage Therapy on a regular basis. See you in a few weeks Karla!

Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., by appointment only. My grandmother Priscilla and I recently visited for a lunch outing and we had tons of leftovers to bring home! She ordered one of Green Market’s specialty grilled flatbreads – the deliciously fresh baked bread was filled with baked baby portabella mushrooms, all-natural baked chicken, tomatoes, gorgonzola cheese and a light mayo spread. She said, “My sandwich was absolutely perfect. It was just what I wanted and more! The gorgonzola cheese paired with the mushrooms was a great mar-

riage of savory flavors.” She told me I must bring her back for lunch again so she can try another delectable sandwich. I tried a wrap with mushroom and brie – let me tell you, I am a good eater and could only finish half of my wrap. It was the bomb, comprised of the deliciously wrapped all-natural baked chicken combined with baked baby portabella mushrooms, brie cheese, peppers and house dressing! The meal came with a choice of balsamic cucumbers, kettle chips, hummus chips or a cup of soup. We both opted for the balsamic cucumbers, which were crisp and delicately topped with crumbled feta and balsamic vinaigrette. Our lunches even came with a cup of frozen yogurt, which neither of us could turn down! My grandmother enjoyed the delicious vanilla coconut and I sampled Green Market Café’s original flavor Taro, which is a tart berry mixture of frozen deliciousness and the perfect treat to end a fantastically fresh meal! Green Market Café offers a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. Breakfast menu items include fresh, healthy flatbread breakfast sandwiches, fresh fruit options and a complimen-
