Sunday Concert Series at East Lake Community Library If you love music and would like to enrich your life with a bit of culture, you don’t have to go far! East Lake Community Library’s Sunday Concert Series is bringing in talented musicians and singers for the community to enjoy for only $10 per person. Sunday Concert Series committee members Penny Snow, Miriam Lane and Nancy Kerr are excited that the program has been so well received by the community and hope that the Sunday Concert Series will continue to grow. “It really has exceeded our expectations,” said Miriam. These ladies have worked diligently to schedule the concerts and are seeking sponsorships for the continued success of the program. There were two concerts held in 2012 and both were successful and greatly enjoyed by all in attendance. The first season commenced with an outstanding performance by the Bayside String Quartet of the Florida Orchestra. The musicians, who normally perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall and other large venues, truly enjoyed the small, personable venue at the library where they were able to visit with

guests. The second concert of the East Lake Community Library Sunday Concert Series drew a near capacity audience for one of our local group of performers, the East Lake High School Madrigal Singers. East Lake Relay for Life – Give Cancer the Boot! The kick-off party for the 2013 Relay for Life of East Lake, held on November 14, was a great success and the heartfelt speeches by Event Chair Patti Halula and Operations Chair Donna Miller-Dunham, along with team leaders, truly touched everyone in attendance and more than a few had to wipe away tears listening to the very personal stories of loss, hope and survival that were shared. Donna and Patti are working together along with a dedicated committee to make the April 12, 2013 event, with its theme “Relay Roundup – Give Cancer the Boot” the biggest, best Relay for Life yet in East Lake. The 2012 Relay for Life of East Lake had 450 participants and raised $59,000. “I know we can do better than that this year,” said Donna. The 2013 goal is to have at least 33 teams and raise $60,000. Nearly everyone in the room at the kick-off party had been affected by cancer, either as a survivor or as a friend or family member of a cancer patient, and these folks are determined to work hard to raise money for the American Cancer Society (ACS) to help with the needs of local cancer pa-

tients – whether it is transportation, lodging, or a gap in insurance coverage, as well as funding research for a cure, screenings for cancer and the many programs available to help patients and caregivers. While waiting for everyone to arrive, a video of the “Purple Couch” at the 2012 event played and student after student shared why they chose to get involved and what the Relay meant for them personally. Patti Halula, who is in the midst of her own personal battle with cancer, spoke of the impact that the ACS programs have had for her personally. “Look Good, Feel Good is a great program for someone like me, with great tips on how to look pretty and what to do with your hair and even how to wear scarves,” shared Patti, who exhibited beauty both inside and out. Patti spoke of the Road to Recovery program, which provides transportation free of charge for those who need it to get to their appointments for checkups and treatment. The Caregivers Support Group is another great program that helps those who are helping cancer patients. “The Relay for Life is more than

and more. Donna wanted to give a big thank you to Domino’s Pizza for donating more than enough pizza (12) to feed the crowd, and also to The Varsity Club who has always been a big supporter of East Lake High School events. Domino’s will be the pizza vendor at the 2013 Relay for Life at East Lake High School. The ACS gives you all the tools you need to build a successful team. The Team Captain Tool Kit has all of the information you need plus tips for fundraising and how to build a successful team. Each team will have its own campsite to decorate. Each participant must raise $100 and teams are encouraged to set a minimum goal of $2,000; though many raise much more than that. Fundraising Chair Bridget Mogged has a lot of great ideas on how your team can raise funds such as tag days, fundraising sales, fundraising nights at local restaurants, and onsite fundraisers such as a dunk tank, inflatables, photo booths, and even selling handmade bracelets and tie-dye t-shirts to name a few that have been successful in the past. Vetture’s Restaurant & Pizzeria - Buon Appetito! By Katie Thomas Walking into Vetture’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, your senses are immediately greeted with a warm welcome. The scent of fresh warm dough, baked cheeses and the heavenly smell of homemade Italian dishes, paired with a greeting from the friendly staff will have you feeling ready to dine, drink and relax in comfort. Vetture’s is a local favorite and has been since opening on East Lake Road in the Brooker Creek Shopping Plaza over a decade ago. In fact, this month marks Vetture’s 12th Anniversary. Famous for their delicious pizzas, mouth-watering classic Italian cuisine and fantastic prices, Vetture’s is complete satisfaction. Owners Rick and Dianne Maida are thankful for the community’s support and their loyal customers. The Maida family feels blessed to be part of such a great neighborhood that has allowed them to turn a restaurant into a family. Vetture’s is a perfect place for gathering together with a few friends or many, and enjoying delicious Italian cuisine and pizza. When Rick and Dianne moved to Woodfield in 1991,

10

they both knew they had found home and a place to raise their four kids, Ricky, Jodi, Corey and Kelli. Dianne is originally from Staten Island, NY. Rick moved to New York when he was 17, after having traveled all over with his parents for his father’s position in the Army. Rick’s mom and dad are both from Italy and many of the recipes served at Vetture’s have been in the family for generations. Dianne is currently Nursing Supervisor at All Children’s Outpatient Care Center in East Lake and has been awarded nurse of the year in the past. Her compassion for helping people carries over into business at Vetture’s and you can often find her popping in between shifts, offering customers a friendly smile and warm welcome. Rick has always been involved with local school athletics, coaching and mentoring kids. Rick, who loves football and has been coaching since 1994, has coached JV Football for East Lake High School, and has previously coached for the East Lake Youth football teams. Photos and plaques of Rick’s teams throughout the years are proudly displayed throughout the

restaurant, which is cheerful with both booths and table tops for diners, as well as a large attractive bar that serves both beer and wine. Rick and Dianne host team dinners for many different teams at East Lake High School in addition to providing students Vetture’s is celebrating its 12th Year in East Lake where the with discount community has embraced it as a favorite place to dine prices. Zuppa Di Pesce sampled a slice of Vetture’s famous Grandma’s Pie; a perfect blend of exquisite cheeses, homemade marinara sauce, lots of garlic, and whole peeled tomatoes atop fresh hand-tossed dough that has been baked to crispy perfection. I tried out Paul’s Eggplant Parmigiana, which I can honestly say is the best I have ever tried. Battered eggplant, topped with special made inhouse marinara, fine cheese and served with a side of pasta; the Eggplant Parmigiana will have you smiling from ear to ear with all your taste buds satisfied. And, the portions are huge! Even those with the heartiest appetites will most likely need a take-home container. The dishes I sampled at Vetture’s paired with great conversation and wine was perfect. Just as I thought my night couldn’t get any better, Dianne

Chicken Kelli ordered up a batch of warm doughy and sweet Zeppolis. The melt-in-yourmouth Zeppolis were a delicious end to my meal; topped with real whipped cream, the sweetened, dough was baked to perfection and Dianne and I easily finished an order together. Desserts are Dianne’s specialty. She makes carrot cakes, chocolate cakes and a traditional New York style cheesecake that are all superb. Dianne makes her desserts from scratch at the restaurant and once you try a piece of her cheesecake, you won’t find another that compares, according to Rick. I went back recently with my family and my brother agreed that the Eggplant Parmigiana was the best ever! And my mother loved her order of Zuppa Di Pesce, a feast of calamari, shrimp, clams, scungilli, and mussels

Eggplant Parmigiana served over linguini with a light marinara sauce. I had the Chicken Kelli, which is comprised of tender cuts of chicken with artichokes and mushrooms sautéed with white wine and garlic – perfect! Of course, we had to try Dianne’s cheesecake and Rick is right – you won’t find better! Always a crowd pleaser, Vetture’s pizzas can be ordered in various sizes: 12” mini, 14” medium, 16” large, and 18” extra large or Sicilian style. Toppings include anchovies, bacon, black olives, broccoli, banana peppers, feta cheese, fresh garlic, ground beef, ham, ricotta, jalapeno peppers, marinated tomatoes, extra cheese, meatballs, mushrooms, onion, pepperoni, sausage, spinach, tomato and pineapple. Pizzas also can be ordered by the slice. There are wonderful specialty pizza pies at Vetture’s including the Spectacular, Pesto, Polynesian, Chicken or Eggplant Parmagiana and Meat Lovers. Vetture’s also serves calzones and a variety of strombolis. Vetture’s luncheon menu offers a nice list of delicious specials at reasonable prices. Hearty hot or cold subs are available at Vetture’s in 6” or 12” size subs. tomato sauce topped with mozzarella; Blackened Tilapia; Parmagiana choices of Eggplant, Veal or Chicken; and other subs such as Turkey, Tuna, Ham and Salami also are available. For dinner, Vetture’s has many different choices and all are delicious! All dinners at Vetture’s are served with fresh homemade bread and a choice of soup or salad. Rick says, “Our veal is unmatchable. It’s the best veal you can buy and the way Paul cooks it allows it to be cut with a fork.” Vegetarian, seafood, chicken, veal and beef are all options to choose from at Vetture’s. Choose what kind of pasta you prefer, the sauce you love best and the dish that makes your taste buds sing out in glee. Dianne and Rick are welcoming and hospitable, whether it comes to work or community – the two dedicate themselves to treating people with respect and kindness. Some employees have been with Vetture’s since its opening; Melanie for ten years and Deshira for seven. Waiter, chef assistant and amazing pizza maker, Jerrid, says, “We have fun here and we work hard to make everything great.” Regular customers, like Peggy who comes in frequently, are much loved by all the Vetture’s staff. Rick says, “We’re all family here.” New renovations will be occurring to Vetture’s bar and customers can look forward to the addition of two new booths. Vetture’s sits around 70 people and on busy nights can fill up fast, so make sure you get in there early for a delicious meal and great company. Take-out, delivery and catering are all available. Jensen Jewelers has been at this same location for twenty-one years, and during this time they have built a wonderful rapport in the community. During my visit at the store, several long-time customers came with a variety of needs all of which were handled with great care. Eagle Lawncare of East Lake Revolutionizing Lawn Care in Your Neighborhood! By Amy Paterson Brian Easley, owner of Eagle Lawncare of East Lake, is taking lawn care service to a whole new level with his impeccable customer service and quality lawn care. Brian is your neighbor and promises to be the best lawn care provider you’ve ever had. Fully licensed and insured, Eagle Lawncare of East Lake is State Certified and cares for residential and commercial lawns in East Lake, Palm Harbor and Oldsmar. Eagle Lawncare takes care of your lawns needs by mowing, edging, trimming, weed control, and overall care in a timely and consistent manner, keeping an “eagle eye” out for any possible problems with your lawn. Additional services provided include: landscaping, hardscaping, hedge trimming, mulching, plugging grass or re-sodding if needed, and more. Eagle Lawncare is actually a sec-

ond career for Brian, who worked for years in architectural design. Still, he has built his business on past experience. While working his way through college, Brian says he did just about everything there is to do related to landscaping, lawn care and irrigation in the Captiva Island and Sanibel Island area. His customers were very demanding and because of that, Brian’s naturally good work ethic became even stronger. Upon moving to East Lake, where he and his wife wanted to raise their family, Brian hired a lawn service and was appalled at the lack of good service that he experienced. When he decided upon a career change, opening a lawn care company that provides superior service seemed natural. “I knew I would be successful at it,” says Brian. “I knew that I could provide a much better service than was available here. The way I see it, my neighbors

here in East Lake work very hard to have their houses and they deserve the to have the best lawn service possible.” His neighbors agree that Eagle Lawncare goes above-and-beyond in providing service to them. Lansbrook resident Michael Jaffe says, “Eagle Lawncare is professional, dependable and easy to deal with. Brian is consistent, hard working and integrity-driven and I am happy to have been a customer of his for many years now.” Simple things such as carrying up the empty garbage cans or picking up the morning paper and dropping it at the front door that sets Brian apart

from the average lawn care companies. He takes notice of all the little things, and informs his clients if anything looks amiss with their homes. Putting the “Care” in Lawn Care Brian is the type of guy that puts the “care” in lawn care. When he started Eagle Lawncare of East Lake three years ago, he took note of every gripe he’s ever had with other lawn care businesses as a customer and set out to transcend them. He took the time to get the proper education and certifications to control weeds and pests, and to fertilize lawns safely.

Brian’s motto is, “I treat my clients as if they were my next door neighbor.” Brian’s sense of community is what sets him apart from all the rest. He truly cares about his community and making a difference for the people who live here. Along with his family, Brian is involved in community outreach programs, such as the Boys and Girls Club. They do what they can to help out with donations of toys, games, school supplies, and other necessities to kids who are less fortunate in our area. He lets his customers know about donation opportunities as well, and if they would like to donate anything he has all the information on what they can do to help out. His good neighbor qualities don’t stop at his humanitarian efforts; he takes this kindness and brings it to his work as well. Brian’s clients are treated with excellent service and open communication. He is readily available to answer any questions and listen to his clients concerns. He makes sure to meet all of his clients face-to-face upon them hiring him. He feels it is important to make contact prior to taking on new customers, so that he knows what each of his clients lawn care needs and desires are to make their

lawn care the best. You won’t find anyone with better work ethic. Brian shows up on the same day every week, unless there is a Holiday. Even if there is no work to be done that day, he is there like clockwork to make sure everything looks good. And there is no “off” season for Eagle Lawncare of East Lake, the company is at work 52 weeks of the year and you can trust that Brian is onsite doing work or at the very least, overseeing it. Each time he finishes a lawn, Brian leaves a one of his signature door-hangers behind to let customers know what exactly he did and if he noticed anything that needed to be done on his next visit. Each door hanger has a service checklist, where he checks off all of the work that was done on each particular visit. There is a comment section so that he can inform his clients of any additional information that he may have for them, such information may be what he plans on doing the following week or any problems that he notices. Eagle Lawncare starts work Monday morning and finishes work on Friday, so you won’t hear mowing on Saturday or Sunday mornings. You

can sleep in on the weekends knowing your lawn is looking healthy and fresh. In addition to superior lawn care Brian also has experience in installing irrigation systems, and is very knowledgeable in how they work. This enables him to include “irrigation observation” to his list of services; he is very careful of sprinkler heads and lines when working, and will keep an eye out for leaks or broken sprinklers. If he sees something off, he informs his clients right away and oftentimes is able to fix the problem easily. Eagle Lawncare offers quality work at very competitive prices. Brian says he can typically match all competitors’ pricing, but will guarantee better service. He prides himself on great work and accessibility. He says, “If one of my clients needs me, I am no more than five minutes away most of the time. I try to be fully accessible to them throughout the week.” Annette, one of Eagle Lawncare’s customers in Forest Lakes, says, “Brian Easley has provided my lawn service since March 2011. I was impressed with his honesty and integrity from the initial contact. He spent a great deal of time explaining his business philosophy and has lived up to it since

the beginning. Mr. Easley is reliable, prompt and willing to perform additional landscape services whenever requested. He is respected by his employees and communicates regularly with his clients.” Another happy customer, Leia Lambrinakos, says, “With flexibility, timeliness and attentiveness, Brian nicely takes care of our landscaping needs. In addition, our lawn and dirt was a disaster and we were apprehensive about how new sod would take or last, but Brian did an excellent job and our lawn has never looked so great and kudos comments from the neighbors!” If you are looking for quality and trustworthy lawn service from a provider who has experience in all aspects of lawn care, including irrigation, call Brian Easley to see what Eagle Lawncare of East Lake can do for you. Eagle Lawncare of East Lake is licensed (Lawn Fertilization: LF183154, Weed Control: LC174351, GI-BMP: GV12435-1) and insured. Call Brian Easley at (727) 902-9000 or email eagleofeastlake@gmail.com for more information.

UGIES SMOKIN’ GOOD SEAFOOD Launches Fundraising Program for Local Nonprofits “Ugies Cares” makes it easy for Tampa Bay charities to raise money. Ugies Smokin’ Good Seafood is making a splash with local nonprofits. The Palm Harbor quick-casual seafood restaurant announced today the launch of “Ugies Cares,” a fundraising program that allows participating nonprofits to receive a donation in the amount of 10 percent of its evening’s total net sales, which excludes sales tax, discounts and gift card sales. Unlike many similar fundraising programs, Ugies does not require guests to redeem vouchers for the nonprofit to receive credit for each sale. Also, Ugies provides participating nonprofits a Promotional Toolkit with flyer and press release templates, and ideas for promoting their events. “We want to make it as easy as possible for local charities to raise money for their deserving causes,” said Lisa Ulgenalp, co-owner of Ugies. “It’s important for us to support our community, and we invite all Tampa

passion, coupled with his commitment to excellence, comprehensive knowledge and experience, and honesty and genuine concern for his patients is what makes him such a great dentist! “For many years I have been through too many dentists and most relationships lasted less then a year,” writes patient Loretta Christopoul. “I was looking for a dentist who was compassionate, honest and most of all, very patient with me. Three years ago I became a patient of Dr. Kontos; finally I had found someone who I could trust. I was so moved by his professionalism and his staff that I referred my sister-in-law and husband; who are forever thanking me. If you are looking for a dentist who understands honesty and TLC, I highly recommend Dr. Kontos.” Dr. Kontos attended the University of South Florida, where he achieved his Bachelor’s in Natural Health Science. Patient Ken Dambrosio writes, “Over the years I have spent many hours in different dental chairs, from NYC to Providence, to Tampa and finally to Tarpon Springs. Here, I have found the most comfortable dental chair to sit in of all those I have visited. Dr. Emanuel Kontos is one of the

most considerate and passionate people I have ever met. He always takes his time and I never feel like I am just another patient. Dr. Kontos’ honesty is so reassuring, thus creating a trusting relationship that I was forever seeking and never finding from other dentists. As patients, we don’t know what the correct dental procedures are – leaving us all at the mercy of our dentist. This is why it is so important to find a dentist that you can truly trust. The reconstruction work that he did for me was extremely intensive that took place over the course of nine months. I spent many hours in Dr. Kontos’ chair, having multiple reconstructive implants. His artistic approach was so perfect and the end result was amazing – I looked as I did 20 years ago! I feel like a kid again, being able to eat, look and smile as I always remembered.” Kontos Dental is located at 1730 S Pinellas Ave, Suites J and K, in Tarpon Springs. Your Roofing Professionals! By Alexis Selby When it comes to protecting your most valuable possessions, nothing is as important as a solid roof over your head, which is why it is imperative to find a reputable and reliable roofing company. Acoma Roofing in Oldsmar, in its sixth decade under the ownership of the Squitiro family, has an excellent reputation that is as sturdy and longlasting as the roofs they build. Acoma Roofing is a MasterElite Roofing Con-

tractor – making them one of only two percent in the entire Nation to qualify for such an honorable title – assuring you that you are dealing with a qualified, reputable, and dependable professional contractor. When nothing less than perfect will do, Acoma Roofing is sure to deliver. “We offer quality roofing services and since establishing our business, we’ve never had a complaint filed with the Better Business Bureau or the licensing board,” explains Santis Squitiro, who co-owns Acoma Roofing

with his brother Steve. The business was established in New York in 1952 by their father, and in 1973 the Squitiro family moved themselves and their business to Dunedin and Oldsmar where they have been trusted and respected for quality work by both homeowners and contractors throughout the Tampa Bay area for the past 39 years! “We do about 300 jobs a year, so that is more than 10,000 jobs we’ve completed in this area over the years,” says Steve, who took over the company with Santis from their father in 1983. No complaints filed and more than 10,000 roofs installed? That is impressive, by even the strictest of standards. Steve says that what really sets Acoma Roofing apart is the workmanship that goes into every Acoma roof and roof repair. Acoma Roofing offers a variety of services, including concentrations in both residential and commercial work. They specialize in all types of new roofing, reroofing and roof repairs, including traditional shingles, wood shakes, flat, slate and metal roofing, concrete and clay tile roofing, and much more. The company also does roof maintenance, tile valley repair and skylight repairs, as well as soffit, fascia and sheathing work. They can also add a slope to your existing flat roof to get

the water off! “The people who use us are looking for good work,” states Steve. “We pride ourselves on our workmanship and we pay our employees well and offer them 401k benefits that we match because we want them to do a good job and we want to keep good people.” Acoma Roofing and its employees believe in doing the job right the first time, and if you do have a problem, the company vows to quickly resolve the issue. Money spent on roofing is never something one looks forward to, but it can be a valuable investment. Quality roof shingles can instantly make your home look more prestigious and will raise the value of your property. Additionally, a quality roof system can lower your annual homeowners’ insurance by up to 45 percent! The staff over at Acoma Roofing can also show you how investing in a tile roof rather than a shingle roof translates into savings on your energy bill. Acoma Roofing may not be the cheapest roofing company in the area, but that is because the company uses the best products available and strives for perfect workmanship, guaranteeing your satisfaction and giving you a safe and secure shelter. Acoma Roofing uses tried and true methods of installation and backs that up with a ten year leak-free guarantee.

Santis and his beautiful wife. Since 1973, Acoma has been a roofing contractor that local builders know they can depend on. Acoma understands the pressures of getting a job completed on time and it has the skilled work force to keep builders’ jobs on schedule. As mentioned earlier, Acoma Roofing is certified by GAF’s MasterElite Contractor Program and is recognized as a MasterElite Roofing Contractor; as designated by GAF Materials Corporation, which is the only certification program of its kind for residential roofing. As a MasterElite roofing contractor, Acoma Roofing makes

up the top two percent of roofing contractors in the U.S., achieving the skills and knowledge necessary to reach the MasterElite status. Because of this, Acoma Roofing is able to provide the Golden Pledge Warranty, the most powerful and substantial warranty in the entire roofing industry! With the Golden Pledge Warranty, which can only be offered by a Master Elite Contractor, Acoma Roofing is able to offer you a 50-year warranty that is not prorated. Acoma Roofing belongs to the Pinellas Executives’ Association (PEA), a prestigious network of the area’s top business leaders. Acoma Roofing has received this earned privilege due to their hard work and commitment to customer satisfaction, as only one contractor from each field is allowed into the PEA and is asked to join based on solid reputation and performance in the county. “Basically it’s a group of people who want to know without a doubt that if they recommend these businesses, the client is going to get a perfect job,” says Steve. The company offers emergency response within 24 hours, free in-home estimates and hurricane inspections for a nominal fee and it’s always a good idea to get an inspection before the storms come. All of Acoma’s employees are covered by worker’s compensation, are fully trained, arrive on time and have excellent manners, leaving your home and yard immaculately clean. Happy customers Bob and Kim Hachberger write, “I want to thank you and your staff for taking extra spe-

As a neighbor in Boot Ranch I thank you. As a realtor, I will certainly recommend only you to my clients, friends and family. Hike for Hospice –– A Celebration of Remembrance By Katie Thomas Gulfside Regional Hospice celebrated their annual Hike for Hospice fundraising event on Sunday, Veteran’s Day, November 11th at Rasmussen College in beautiful Land O’ Lakes. For the past six years, Gulfside Regional Hospice has worked with volunteers throughout Pasco County to raise funds and create lasting memories for the community through the Hike for Hospice 5k event. “Hike for Hospice is designed to celebrate and honor the lives of friends and family members,” said Linda Ward, president and CEO of Gulfside Regional Hospice. “I walk in memory of my father, who passed away in Gulfside’s care. The Hike is for people just like you and me – who want to honor the memory of a loved one and make every day count for those facing a serious illness.” This year’s Hike for Hospice allowed me to honor the memory of people I have lost and the ceremony held in remembrance for the community was beautiful and inspirational. and Veteran’s together in an atmosphere where the community comes together to meet, greet and support each other was a blessing to be a part of. Gulfside Regional Hospice is a big part of the support group, “We Honor Veterans.” Over 25% of Hospice patients are Veterans and Gulfside Regional Hospice dedicates themselves to raising funds to provide these Veterans with the special attention and care that they deserve. Many Veterans attended the Hike for Hospice event. Teams of active-duty troops joined in on the hike, in honor of our Country, Veterans and Hospice’s hard work. An Eventful Day to Be Remembered Hike for Hospice started at 7 a.m., opening with registration for runners and walkers participating in the 5k. All participants received a Hike for Hospice t-shirt, breakfast and beverages. At 7:45 a.m., before the hikers began, the Presentation of Colors was presented by the NOSC Tampa Color Guard from MacDill Air Force in honor of Veteran’s Day and the Hike for Hospice Event. The National Anthem was sung by Kelsey Bain and immediately

following the National Anthem, skydivers from Skydive City amazed the crowd with their parachuting skills and American flag decorated chutes. The performances and spectacular sights got the crowd excited for a fun-filled day. Linda Ward said, “The day was beautiful and we got to honor our veterans this year, with special presentations both before Photos by Keth Luke and after the Hike. The memory balloons were released at the same time, after the memorial and award ceremony. Watching the hundreds of balloons fly away into the sky was a tear jerking moment for all of us remembering loved ones lost. The memorial and award ceremony began after the finish of the 5k hike. When hikers returned back, they had some time to eat, drink and gather with friends to share their stories of family and loved ones. Once the ceremony began, many heartfelt and compassionate stories were shared. Many people said that without Hospice helping them assist their loved ones into the next life,

they would not have been able to do it. Gulfside Regional Hospice’s mission is to provide compassionate, quality care to individuals and their loved ones as they face life-limiting illnesses. “We will help our patients to find relief from pain and suffering, so they may live each day with dignity, peace and comfort.” I believe that GRH is fulfilling their mission, the stories told and the success of the event show that they have really made a permanent, positive impact on our community. Awards were presented to teams that had participated in the race and raised astounding amounts of donations for Gulfside Regional Hospice. Awards went out to: First Place Team – Team Kenny - $1,950, Second Place Team – Vince’s VIPS - $1,845, Third Place Team – Kanehl’s Kids - $1,385, First Place Individual – Amanda Long $1,950, Second Place Individual – Janeen Comport Probst - $1,000 and Third Place Individual – Jo DeBolt $685. All proceeds from the Hike for Hospice are designated for patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses in Pasco County, as well as support programs at Gulfside’s Hospice Houses and Bereavement Centers. The Hike for Hospice has raised more than $300,000 for Gulfside Regional Hospice since it began in 2007 and this

year was able to raise more than $55,000! “The Hike for Hospice would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors,” said Ward. The Presenting Sponsor for the Hike for Hospice is Bouchard Insurance. The Medal of Honor Sponsor is AC-Healthcare Staffing and Placement Services. This year’s Hike for Hospice charity event turned out beautifully and I am so pleased to have been able to experience the compassion, dedication and love that Gulfside Regional Hospice shares with their community. I am certainly looking forward to next year’s Hike for Hospice! If you would like to be a volunteer or make a donation to Gulfside Regional Hospice, visit their website at www.grhospice.org . Continued from page 1

Meet Dr. Pikos Dr. Pikos is a true visionary who has already built a legacy. Such an extraordinary individual could be intimidating, but Dr. Pikos is the opposite of egotistical. His humility and kindness are evident immediately upon meeting him and his great love for his family and his community is inspiring. Dr. Pikos and his wife Diane live in nearby Tarpon Springs and recently celebrated their 25th Anniversary. Diane Pikos is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), who works closely with Dr. Bruce Landon at Landon Plastic Surgery in Trinity. The couple is very proud of their two children who are following their parents’ lead with an excellent work ethic of their own. Lindsey Pikos is a 3rd-year dental school student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, and her younger brother Tony Pikos is currently a senior at University of South Florida and is applying to dental school. Originally from Campbell, OH, Dr. Pikos attended The Ohio State University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, continuing to graduate with honors from the The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Dr. Pikos completed an internship at Miami Valley Hospital and residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Montefiore Hospital. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry, and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Pikos is the recipient of the 2006 Aaron Gershkoff Memorial Award from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the following institutions: The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry and Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental

Dr. Pikos explains, “What I teach is a sub-specialty of implantology. Bone grafting has been my forte over the years and this is one of only three facilities in our country that features what I’m teaching. Grafting allows us to reconstruct areas of the mouth that are lost for a number of reasons. We are able to rebuild lost bone and gum tissue using a combination of not only the patient’s own tissue, but also with tissue engineering technology.” Dr. Pikos has every reason to feel very proud of his accomplishments. “This is a very unique Institute within the realm of implantology. My Institute is the second longest running program in the country and I’m very honored to be able to share my expertise with my colleagues.” Many in the Tampa Bay area know of Dr. Pikos and his practice, Coastal Jaw Surgery for Implant & Oral Reconstruction with offices in Palm Harbor, Spring Hill and Trinity. Known as the “doctors’ doctors,” Dr. Pikos and his associates at Coastal Jaw Surgery are the trusted physicians that hundreds of dental and medical professionals refer their patients to, as well as their friends and family members. Coastal Jaw Surgery was founded in 1983 and July 2012 marked its 29th Anniversary. Coastal Jaw Surgery’s team of Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons perform state-of-the-art dental implant procedures, Digitally Guided Bone Augmentation™, periodontal plastic surgery, wisdom teeth extractions, extractions with site preservation, pediatric and pre-orthodontic care, oral pathology and the safest, proven anesthesia options. Dr. Pikos is one of the leading experts in these innovative oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures having taken with more than 4,000 hours of continuing education, prompting dental surgeons worldwide to travel to our area to learn from him and im-

been meeting at East Lake Woodlands Golf Club in years previous. Beyond State-of-the-Art The Pikos Implant Institute really makes the term “state-of-the-art” seem inadequate. Not only is the décor throughout the building elegant and immaculate; every detail has been considered to ensure that dentists have an extraordinary learning experience. The large Exhibit Hall is comfortable and accommodating and the Teaching Auditorium is equipped with the best sound system available, acoustical ceiling, roomy individual seating and a huge projection screen (18’ x 6’) and hardwiring allows the surgeons to watch procedures as they are being performed at Coastal Jaw Surgery. And that is just Phase I; Phase II is currently underway and will provide the Institute with its own operatory with a large plate-glass window through which the attendees can watch surgical procedures; the Operatory is equipped with three cameras – one on the patient, one on the doctor and one overlooking the room. There also will be several private Operatories built where attendees will receive hands-on training. The program is very interactive and Dr. Pikos encourages his colleagues to ask questions as they watch procedures. Dr. Pikos says, “We are unique in

that we are able to maintain cuttingedge technology in-office, such as CT scan units specifically for the head and neck utilizing CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). We were the first to have CBCT in Tampa Bay when we added it in 2005 and the second in Florida. This technology along with tissue engineering technology and related technologies that I’ve brought to Coastal Jaw Surgery and the Institute throughout the years has provided a background where I have long-term follow-up with patients and as a result, I’m able to show what works literally over time. Therefore, we are very science-based.” Dr. Pikos has made it his mission to provide surgical and technology based training programs in an intimate setting with limited attendance and a learning environment that fosters enthusiastic camaraderie amongst colleagues. Other dentists have responded to Dr. Pikos’ program with enthusiasm because they leave the Pikos Implant Institute with new knowledge that they can take back to their patients, and they are very appreciative of Dr. Pikos unique skills and teaching abilities. James Maxwell, OMS, from Springfield, OH says, “The constant availability of the speaker and willingness to interact with the attendees is unparalleled. The marriage of evidence

based material and years of clinical experience is unrivaled.” And Neil Sullivan, OMS, from Annapolis, MD writes, “The pursuit of dental implant surgical excellence is thriving at the Pikos Implant Institute.” Dr. Pikos is very thankful to his staff and others who have been a big part of making the Pikos Implant Institute into the cutting-edge facility that it is today. “It was a real collaborative effort,” says Dr. Pikos. “I am so blessed. Our Coastal Jaw Surgery staff is fantastic – they really are incredible, from the assistants to the front desk and office administrator Kathy Diaz. Invaluable to him is the Pikos Implant Institute team:

Administrator Alison Thiede, Mark Robinson, Informational Technology Director, and Videographer Jami Walls. Dr. Pikos also wishes to thank the following people who were instrumental in bringing his dreams to reality: building contractor Robert Bandes of Bandes Construction Company, architect Mark Jonnatti of Jonnatti Architecture, decorator Jean Alli of Jean Alli Designs and the Superintendent of the building, John Brasher.
