Gulfside Regional Hospice celebrated their annual Hike for Hospice fundraising event on Sunday, Veteran’s Day, November 11th at Rasmussen College in beautiful Land O’ Lakes.

For the past six years, Gulfside Regional Hospice has worked with volunteers throughout Pasco County to raise funds and create lasting memories for the community through the Hike for Hospice 5k event. “Hike for Hospice is designed to celebrate and honor the lives of friends and family members,” said Linda Ward, president and CEO of Gulfside Regional Hospice. “I walk in memory of my father, who passed away in Gulfside’s care. Gulfside Regional Hospice, established as a nonprofit corporation in Pasco County in 1988 and initially licensed in 1989, serves more than 375 patients daily. It employs over 250 professionals and has more than 550 volunteers, and is the only hospice that serves Pasco County exclusively. Toast of Tampa Singer Crowned 2012 Queen of Harmony Gina Baker, lead singer of award winning Touche' quartet and member of the 100-woman Toast of Tampa Show Chorus (TOT), was crowned 2012 International Queen of Harmony by judges at the 66th annual convention and competition of Sweet Adelines International in Denver on November 2. Winning the gold medal was the achievement of a lifetime for the long distance quartet, whose four singers have only performed and competed together for two years and came in second in 2011. Lead-singer Baker, a resident of Tampa who works as a neonatal intensive care nurse at St Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, is joined by her stepmother, Jan Anton, also of Florida, and friends Patty Baker from Southern California and Kim McCormick of Oregon: www.touchequartet.com.

Tampa Bay Communities Named Among 100 Best Communities for Young People America’s Promise Alliance has named three Tampa Bay communities – Sarasota County, St. Petersburg and Tampa/Hillsborough – among 2012’s 100 Best Communities for Young People, presented by ING. This year, winners were chosen from a pool of more than 320 nominees from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The winners were selected by a distinguished panel of judges that included some of the nation’s most wellknown civic, business and nonprofit leaders. St. Petersburg is a six-time 100 Best winner with a focus on youth programs that encourage higher education and positive social development.

With an emphasis on education and

youth safety, Sarasota County is a second-time winner. As a four-time winner, Hillsborough County/Tampa continues to provide its young people with multiple resources to stay in school and live healthy, productive lives.

Heritage Springs Charity Quilters On November 14th, fourteen of the Heritage Springs Charity Quilters met for their last meeting in 2012 for a special appreciation luncheon at their Clubhouse. Twenty-three quilts were turned in – giving them a total of 117 quilts donated in 2012 to the Salvation Army Domestic Violence Shelter, Life Choices Women’s Care Center and the St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Since 2008, they have made and donated a total number of 609 quilts.

The Heritage Springs Charity Quilters would like to express their appreciation to the staff at their Clubhouse for setting up and serving their luncheon, as well as moving their fabric cabinet from the Arts and Crafts Room to the Card Room – allowing

them to restock their fabrics and batting. They would also like to give special thanks to Janet Cass for her donation of new quilting fabrics and to The Fairfield Corporation for donation of new batting. The Fairfield’s donations of batting were used in almost all of the quilts made since 2008. They really appreciate all the support they have received from their Heritage Springs Community since they began their Charity Quilters group in the fall of 2008.

Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation Recognized for Support of ACH Audiology Services On Nov. 12, the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida was recognized at a dedication ceremony at the All Children’s Hospital Child Development & Rehabilitation Center in St. Petersburg this past September for its support of Audiology Services at the recently renovated rehabilitation center.

Sylvia Ameen, Vice President of All Children’s Hospital Foundation, welcomed everyone to the event thanking them “for your commitment, your passion and unwavering dedication to the many children and families who need the programs and the highly trained, compassionate professionals located in this newly renovated center.”

Dr. Jonathan Ellen, President and Vice Dean of All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine, acknowledged the Sertoma Foundation for its participation with a special piece of artwork. “Many of the children receiving the services in this facility are very literal and tactile and this picture was created by our patients – it’s their fingerprints that make up the petals on all these flowers,” said Dr. Ellen.

That program became a department of All Children’s in 1972.

“Today, that relationship is as strong as ever. The Sertoma Speech &

Hearing Foundation and the St. Petersburg Noon Sertoma Club provide continuous philanthropic support for our speech and hearing programs.

This includes support for facilities, materials, and direct service funding for evaluations and treatments,” added Dr. Ellen. He then asked Craig McCart, Executive Director of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation, and Rob Shingler, President of the St. Petersburg Noon Sertoma Club, to come forward to be recognized.

“Sertoma reaches out to children from throughout the region with support for our speech and hearing services at the All Children’s Outpatient Care centers,” said Craig McCart. A tour of the center included information about the advanced therapies and programs in the areas of speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy sports medicine, and audiology among others. The center and its programs are supported by numerous sponsors also acknowledged at the event.

By Kim Thomas It is a rare opportunity when one is privileged to meet a surgeon who is a world-renowned expert in their field, so I felt very fortunate when I recently met with Michael A. Pikos, DDS, to tour the newly remodeled facility that will house the Pikos Implant Institute opening this November. General dentists and oral surgeons from around the world will come to Trinity, Florida to learn advanced bone and soft tissue grafting surgical techniques from Dr. Pikos, who has been teaching since 1990 and who founded the Pikos Implant Institute in 1991. Through the Pikos Implant Institute, Dr. Pikos has shared his knowledge and fine-tuned surgical techniques with more than 2,700 dental clinicians in all 50 states in the U.S. and in 32 countries worldwide.

Basically, at Pikos Implant Institute, doctors learn to build a platform for dental implants, which is actually miraculous for patients who have lost bone and tissue due to accidents or tumors. Through science and technological advances Dr. Pikos and his colleagues are helping patients to face themselves in the mirror again and to get back to living a quality life. Dr.

And that is just Phase I; Phase II is currently underway and will provide the Institute with its own operatory with a large plate-glass window through which the attendees can watch surgical procedures; the Operatory is equipped with three cameras – one on the patient, one on the doctor and one overlooking the room. There also will be several private Operatories built where attendees will receive hands-on training. The program is very interactive and Dr. Pikos encourages his colleagues to ask questions as they watch procedures.

Dr. Pikos says, “We are unique in that we are able to maintain cuttingedge technology in-office, such as CT scan units specifically for the head and neck utilizing CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). We were the first to have CBCT in Tampa Bay when we added it in 2005 and the second in Florida. This technology along with tissue engineering technology and related technologies that I’ve brought to Coastal Jaw Surgery and the Institute throughout the years has provided a background where I have long-term follow-up with patients and as a result, I’m able to show what works literally over time. Therefore, we are very sciencebased.”

“Hike For Hospice” Continued from page 1 2011 Non-profit of the Year by the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The Hike for Hospice event is an annual fundraising get together put on by GRH. Linda Ward says, “We owe a big thanks to everyone who participates. We couldn’t make this wonderful event happen without all the volunteers, sponsors and participants.”

Hike for Hospice is full of compassion. Memorializing loved ones lost and Veteran’s together in an atmosphere where the community comes together to meet, greet and support each other was a blessing to be a part of.

Gulfside Regional Hospice is a big part of the support group, “We Honor Veterans.” Over 25% of Hospice patients are Veterans and Gulfside Regional Hospice dedicates themselves to raising funds to provide these Veterans with the special attention and care that they deserve. Many Veterans attended the Hike for Hospice event. Teams of active-duty troops joined in on the hike, in honor of our Country, Veterans and Hospice’s hard work.

An Eventful Day to Be Remembered Hike for Hospice started at 7 a.m., opening with registration for runners and walkers participating in the 5k. All participants received a Hike for Hospice t-shirt, breakfast and beverages. At 7:45 a.m., before the hikers began, the Presentation of Colors was presented by the NOSC Tampa Color Guard from MacDill Air Force in honor of Veteran’s Day and the Hike for Hospice Event.

The National Anthem was sung by Kelsey Bain and immediately following the National Anthem, skydivers from Skydive City amazed the crowd with their parachuting skills and American flag decorated chutes. The performances and spectacular sights got the crowd excited for a fun-filled day. Linda Ward said, “The day was beautiful and we got to honor our veterans this year, with special presentations both before and after the Hike. From the starting line at the run until the memorial at the end of the day, you could feel the energy of the Hikers.”

After the 5K, Gulfside’s bereavement department started the program with a special presentation to celebrity guest, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, Mike Alstott. He has been a huge part of Hike for Hospice since its beginnings six years ago. A special mo-
