Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation Recognized for Support of ACH Audiology Services On Nov. 12, the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida was recognized at a dedication ceremony at the All Children’s Hospital Child Development & Rehabilitation Center in St. Petersburg this past September for its support of Audiology Services at the recently renovated rehabilitation center. Sylvia Ameen, Vice President of All Children’s Hospital Foundation, welcomed everyone to the event thanking them “for your commitment, your passion and unwavering dedication to the many children and families who need the programs and the highly trained, compassionate professionals located in this newly renovated center.” Dr. Jonathan Ellen, President and Vice Dean of All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine, acknowledged the Sertoma Foundation for its participation with a special piece of artwork. “Many of the children receiving the services in this facility are very literal and tactile and this picture was created by our patients – it’s their fingerprints that make up the petals on all these flowers,” said Dr. Ellen. The plaque reads on the picture reads: “I have a hand, you have another, put them together and we have each other.” Child Development & Rehabilitation Center, September 20, 2012 It was the St. Petersburg Noon Sertoma Club that developed the first speech and hearing program in the nation in 1955 that became affiliated with Sertoma International. That program became a department of All Children’s in 1972. “Today, that relationship is as strong as ever. The Sertoma Speech &

Hearing Foundation and the St. Petersburg Noon Sertoma Club provide continuous philanthropic support for our speech and hearing programs. This includes support for facilities, materials, and direct service funding for evaluations and treatments,” added Dr. Ellen. He then asked Craig McCart, Executive Director of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation, and Rob Shingler, President of the St. Petersburg Noon Sertoma Club, to come forward to be recognized. “Sertoma reaches out to children from throughout the region with support for our speech and hearing services at the All Children’s Outpatient Care centers,” said Craig McCart. A tour of the center included information about the advanced therapies and programs in the areas of speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy sports medicine, and audiology among others. The center and its programs are supported by numerous sponsors also acknowledged at the event. Hearing Loss is the most common birth defect nationally. Early detection and intervention is vital for an infant to have the opportunity to access speech and other sounds for learning and brain development. Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation assists hard of hearing babies, children, and adults to avoid a life of isolation and hear the world around them so they can succeed personally, academically, and socially. The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida is to provide quality developmental and rehabilitative services, products and education—primarily to children—throughout Florida, in a caring and compassionate environment, never limited by the ability to pay.

TINARI CHIROPRACTIC is Dedicated to Improving Patients’ Lives at Every Age By Marcy Sanford Dr. Dominick Tinari began helping people with their pain at a very young age. While other 9-year-old kids were thinking of ways to be a pain in the neck, Dr. Tinari was figuring out how to help reduce his father’s back pain. “My dad was a firefighter in New York City for many years. He would come home from a long day on the job and would be in a lot of pain. I would find the spots on his back that had the most tension and massage those to help him out. Even at a young age, I understood how massage could work out kinks and pains. At 14 years old I was diagnosed with scoliosis and began seeing a chiropractor for treatment. When I entered college, I knew that I wanted to help people by becoming a chiropractor.” And Dr. Tinari is doing just that at Tinari Chiropractic located at

10

19417 Shumard Oak Drive. Dr. Dominick Tinari and his friendly staff at Tinari Chiropractic are dedicated to helping you feel your best and be your best. Patients of all ages receive treatments targeted specifically to their needs. In some cases, Dr. Tinari is helping patients before they are even born. “I was a student of Dr. Larry Webster, the founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association. He developed a specific chiropractic treatment that establishes balance and reduces stress in a pregnant woman’s body. This technique, known as the Webster Technique, has been clinically shown to allow for optimal fetal positioning. I was honored to be one of the last students to learn firsthand from Dr. Webster.” Many women seek chiropractic care to relieve neck or back pain that results from weight gain and body

changes during pregnancy. But even if you’re not in pain, you can benefit from visiting a chiropractor. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help reduce the risk of having a breech baby. Regular chiropractic care can also provide a more comfortable pregnancy and delivery for both mother and baby. Children, especially those who play sports can benefit from regular chiropractic care. According to the National Center for Sports Safety, “Overuse injury, which occurs over time from repeated motion, is responsible for nearly half of all sports injuries to middle-and high-school students.” Children who play impact sports are also at risk for injuries that could cause misalignments in their spine or neck. Chiropractic care benefits children by correcting the spinal alignment to improve their overall health. When the spine becomes misaligned during birth or from a blow or fall, muscle tissue

and nerves may also be affected. Spinal adjustment frees joints, restores motion and relieves nerve pressure, which could be causing other ailments. Dr. Tinari is enthusiastic about sports and helping athletes achieve peak performance. After hearing about Kinesio Tape, he met with the inventor and has had extensive training on how to use this valuable tool to best benefit his patients. Douglas Dentistry – New Name & Location – Same Exceptional Care By Kim Thomas Everyone loves to see you smile! And Douglas Dentistry loves to make beautiful smiles. So, if you are looking for exceptional dental care from a dentist whose services range from general dentistry for the entire family to implants and cosmetic dentistry, then make an appointment to meet Shawn Douglas, DDS, and his friendly staff, who welcome you to Douglas Dentistry’s new office in Lutz. Dr. Douglas’ practice outgrew its previous location at 8734 N. Mobley Rd. in the Fox’s Corner shopping center in Odessa and the move to a new office on October 15th was the perfect time to rename his practice – Odessa Family Dentistry is now Douglas Dentistry, located at 5306 Van Dyke Road in Lutz. Dentistry is family-oriented and the roomier office is comfortable for all aged patients and easily accommodates your family. “We are in a larger facility to better accommodate our patients,” says Dr. Douglas. “We have incorporated several pieces of new dental equipment including mas-

18

saging dental chairs. We are confident that these timely, positive changes will result in a better patient experience and although we are excited about the changes, there are some things that will NOT change. Our patients will still receive the personalized care and attention from our entire staff that they have come to expect.” With the larger facility comes some awesome perks, like those upgraded chairs that Dr. Douglas had installed in all of the treatment rooms. Patients feel pampered after a visit to Douglas Dentistry, where Dr. Douglas and his staff work hard to create positive dental experiences for every patient. Sedation is available for those who need it, but most patients find that they are very comfortable due to the combination of Dr. Douglas’ easy manner and the comfort-inducing cozy neck pillows and blankets that are provided in addition to the luxurious massaging dental chairs. Dr. Douglas is one of those people who knew from an early age what he wanted to be when he grew up. Every summer he would shadow his

uncle, who was an endodontist. It was through working alongside his uncle and seeing firsthand how dentistry could truly improve people’s lives that he knew dentistry was what he wanted to do. After attending USF and receiving his college degree, he received a Master’s degree in Health and Administration. smiles through cosmetic dentistry. “I really love working with my hands,” says Dr. Douglas, “and working with cosmetic dentistry allows me to really make a difference in people’s lives.” Douglas Dentistry utilizes the best of dental technology in order to provide an elevated level of care to its patients. “Digital x-rays are ideal because they give off a much lower dose of radiation to the patient; in fact, they are up to 90 percent lower. It is also a lot more diagnostic because, as a dentist, you can manipulate and enhance the image to better diagnose your patients. Also, digital x-rays are ‘green’ and better for the environment, because no chemicals are required to create the image,” says Dr. Douglas. Another diagnostic tool that Dr. Douglas finds very useful is the intraoral camera that allows him to actually show a patient an up-close, high definition photo of the inside of their mouth and individual teeth. Not only is the intra-oral camera an excellent diagnostic tool, it is also a great way for him to educate his patients about their oral care and the dental procedures that are planned for their care. You Can Change Your Smile!

Neighborhood News & Lifestyles

Through dental reconstruction, Dr. Douglas can give you a glamorous smile! No matter what a person’s genetics determined, the miracle of cosmetic dentistry is changing the way people see themselves and helping many to feel better about themselves. If you have a chipped tooth or ever avoid smiling because you are not proud of your teeth, you should consider cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Douglas can easily repair chipped teeth, hide unsightly gaps, and create a beautiful smile that has straight, brilliant white teeth without the need for braces or apparatuses. This kind of procedure can be done in as little as two visits to Douglas Dentistry. Advances in dental techniques and the use of advanced materials have taken cosmetic dentistry far beyond what dentists could do ten years ago. His skill, artistic eye and knowledge of the latest cosmetic dentistry techniques, such as dental implants, allow Dr. Douglas to completely transform his patients’ smiles if they need it, and even if they just want a prettier smile. Dental implants are beautiful and functional, offering an excellent advanced alternative to bridges and dentures. Dr. Douglas is skilled at these

longstanding procedures too, but most patients prefer the newer procedures. Dental implants can bring a quality of life back into people’s lives that many of them thought they would never have again. If you are looking for a family dentist who treats patients of all ages, who takes his time, and who has a passion for what he does – whether you need a full mouth restoration or simply need a cleaning or maybe professional teeth whitening, visit Dr. Douglas at Douglas Dentistry, which accepts most dental PPOs and offers

patients low and no-interest payment plans so that everyone can have a beautiful smile. Douglas Dentistry is located at 5306 Van Dyke Road in Lutz. Office hours are Tues., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Wed. and Thurs., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.; and 8 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Fri. Dentists Around the World Learn to Create Miracles Here

Dr. Michael A. Pikos, DDS By Kim Thomas It is a rare opportunity when one is privileged to meet a surgeon who is a world-renowned expert in their field, so I felt very fortunate when I recently met with Michael A. Pikos, DDS, to tour the newly remodeled facility that will house the Pikos Implant Institute opening this November. General dentists and oral surgeons from around the world will come to Trinity, Florida to learn advanced bone and soft tissue grafting surgical techniques from Dr. Pikos, who has been teaching since 1990 and who founded the Pikos Implant Institute in 1991. Through the Pikos Implant Institute, Dr. Pikos has shared his knowledge and fine-tuned surgical techniques with more than 2,700 dental clinicians in all 50 states in the U.S. and in 32 countries worldwide. Basically, at Pikos Implant Institute, doctors learn to build a platform for dental implants, which is actually miraculous for patients who have lost bone and tissue due to accidents or tumors. Through science and technological advances Dr. Pikos and his colleagues are helping patients to face themselves in the mirror again and to get back to living a quality life. Dr.

22

Pikos himself has performed more than 15,000 implants and several thousand bone and soft tissue grafting procedures. Dr. Pikos explains, “What I teach is a sub-specialty of implantology. Bone grafting has been my forte over the years and this is one of only three facilities in our country that features what I’m teaching. Grafting allows us to reconstruct areas of the mouth that are lost for a number of reasons. And that is just Phase I; Phase II is currently underway and will provide the Institute with its own operatory with a large plate-glass window through which the attendees can watch surgical procedures; the Operatory is equipped with three cameras – one on the patient, one on the doctor and one overlooking the room. There also will be several private Operatories built where attendees will receive hands-on training. The program is very interactive and Dr. Pikos encourages his colleagues to ask questions as they watch procedures. Dr. Pikos says, “We are unique in that we are able to maintain cuttingedge technology in-office, such as CT scan units specifically for the head and neck utilizing CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). We were the first to have CBCT in Tampa Bay when we added it in 2005 and the second in Florida. This technology along with tissue engineering technology and related technologies that I’ve brought to Coastal Jaw Surgery and the Institute throughout the years has provided a background where I have long-term follow-up with patients and as a result, I’m able to show what works literally over time. Therefore, we are very sciencebased.” Dr. Pikos has made it his mission to provide surgical and technology based training programs in an intimate setting with limited attendance and a learning environment that fosters enthusiastic camaraderie amongst colleagues. Other dentists have responded to Dr. Pikos’ program with

enthusiasm because they leave the Pikos Implant Institute with new knowledge that they can take back to their patients, and they are very appreciative of Dr. Pikos unique skills and teaching abilities. James Maxwell, OMS, from Springfield, OH says, “The constant availability of the speaker and willingness to interact with the attendees is unparalleled. The marriage of evidence based material and years of clinical experience is unrivaled.” And Neil Sullivan, OMS, from Annapolis, MD writes, “The pursuit of dental implant surgical excellence is thriving at the Pikos Implant Institute.” Dr. Pikos is very thankful to his staff and others who have been a big part of making the Pikos Implant Institute into the cutting-edge facility that it is today. “It was a real collaborative effort,” says Dr. Pikos. “I am so blessed. Our Coastal Jaw Surgery staff is fantastic – they really are incredible, from the assistants to the front desk and office administrator Kathy Diaz. Invaluable to him is the Pikos Implant Institute team: Administrator Alison Thiede, Mark Robinson, Informational Technology Director, and Videographer Jami Walls. Dr. Pikos also wishes to thank the following people who were instrumental in bringing his dreams to reality: building contractor Robert Bandes of Bandes Construction Company, architect Mark Jonnatti of Jonnatti Architecture, decorator Jean Alli of Jean Alli Designs and the Superintendent of the building, John Brasher. “Hike For Hospice” Continued from page 1 2011 Non-profit of the Year by the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The Hike for Hospice event is an annual fundraising get together put on by GRH. Linda Ward says, “We owe a big thanks to everyone who participates. We couldn’t make this wonderful event happen without all the volunteers, sponsors and participants.” Hike for Hospice is full of compassion. Memorializing loved ones lost and Veteran’s together in an atmosphere where the community comes together to meet, greet and support each other was a blessing to be a part of. Gulfside Regional Hospice is a big part of the support group, “We Honor Veterans.” Over 25% of Hospice patients are Veterans and Gulfside Regional Hospice dedicates themselves to raising funds to provide these Veterans with the special attention and care that they deserve. Many Veterans attended the Hike for Hospice event. Teams of active-duty troops joined in on the hike, in honor of our Country, Veterans and Hospice’s hard work.

An Eventful Day to Be Remembered Hike for Hospice started at 7 a.m., opening with registration for runners and walkers participating in the 5k. All participants received a Hike for Hospice t-shirt, breakfast and beverages. At 7:45 a.m., before the hikers began, the Presentation of Colors was presented by the NOSC Tampa Color Guard from MacDill Air Force in honor of Veteran’s Day and the Hike for Hospice Event. The National Anthem was sung by Kelsey Bain and immediately following the National Anthem, skydivers from Skydive City amazed the crowd with their parachuting skills and American flag decorated chutes. The performances and spectacular sights got the crowd excited for a fun-filled day. Linda Ward said, “The day was beautiful and we got to honor our veterans this year, with special presentations both before and after the Hike. From the starting line at the run until the memorial at the end of the day, you could feel the energy of the Hikers.” After the 5K, Gulfside’s bereavement department started the program with a special presentation to celebrity guest, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, Mike Alstott. He has been a huge part of Hike for Hospice since its beginnings six years ago. A special mo-

Erik Hendrickson, 9, told his story about how hospice helped his family, after his great-grandparents and grandfather passed away. “The counselors helped me a lot by counseling the kid’s camp and group activities,” Hendrickson said. “At the kids’ camp, I was able to meet new people and do fun activities like making a happy/mad pillowcase. This pillow really helped me get my mad and sad feelings out after my loved ones died.” Hike for Hospice’s Children’s
