Community News Briefs

Ace Golf Awarded Large Business of the Year 2012 The Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce awarded Ace Golf, including the Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Golf Club, the 2012 Large Business of the Year this month at the Annual Awards Meeting. Chamber Director, Sue Thomas, presented the plaque and trophy to Crescent Oaks General Manager, Jerry Couzynse. Ms. Thomas shared the main reason Ace Golf won this award was “due to their success and enthusiasm in turning around properties in such poor condition. More than laying new sod, Ace Golf has partnered with the community to achieve mutual success.” Family-owned Ace Golf is Tampa based and has been in the golf business for 19 years, setting the standard for golf courses and practice facilities in the Tampa Bay area. Ace Golf owns Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs, Pebble Creek Golf Club in Tampa and the Ace Golf Ranges in Brandon and Riverview. The completely renovated

Crescent Oaks Golf Club joined Wentworth Golf Club last year as semiprivate open to the public for the first time ever. Though Ace Golf has only been in Tarpon Springs since Jan. 1, 2011, the company entered Tarpon Springs in a big way by acquiring two unprofitable (Crescent Oaks was actually closed) country clubs and turning them around in a very short time. Crescent Oaks alone went from 0 employees to over 40 and from no revenues to almost $2 million annually. Wentworth went from 30 employees to 40 and this year will do about 40% more revenue than the club did in 2010 when members owned it. Owners Bill Place and Su Lee are applying the same formula for success that made their Pebble Creek Golf Club one of the top courses in the bay area. By buying underperforming clubs, investing heavily in improvements, and then expanding services, the couple is able to turn the clubs around quickly and create more jobs. After $1.5 million in investment, both

Wentworth and Crescent Oaks golf courses are in top condition, their banquet rooms expanded, and Wentworth now has an Irish Pub open to the public. Both clubs are already growing membership and golf rounds and hosting more weddings, parties, tournaments, and fundraisers. As a local, family owned company, Ace Golf is focused on the community and raising money for charities like the Pinellas Police Athletic League (PAL). Ace donated all funds from a tournament last January to PAL and is hosting another on Dec. 8 at Wentworth Golf Club. For only $25 and an unwrapped teen’s present, any golfer may play the PAL Tournament and support at-risk youth. The Crescent Oaks Country Club is located at 3300 Crescent Oaks Blvd in Tarpon Springs, off Eastlake Rd a mile north of Tarpon (Keystone) Ave. For more information, call (727) 9374653 (GOLF) or visit online at crescentoaksgolf.com. Multigenerational Living

Lennar’s Next Gen – The Home Within a Home® Attracting Strategic Homebuyers The number of multigenerational households has increased by 60% since 1990, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This dramatic change in the American lifestyle is primarily due to two trends. First, Baby boomers are living longer and are faced with deteriorating pensions, a failing Social Security system, and ever-increasing healthcare costs. Secondly, college debt and the amplified cost of living means that many children move back home after college, and stay for several years. To satisfy this evolution in the American household a respected national builder has created Next Gen - The Home Within a Home® by Lennar. This intelligent home design includes a separate suite with its own entrance, eat-in kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom, laundry room and living room. Lennar is now bringing this revolutionary design to the Tampa area with homes being built in Concord Station in Land O’Lakes, Live Oak Preserve in New Tampa, Triple Creek in Riverview, and River Bend in Ruskin, Florida. Lennar’s Next Gen - The Home Within a Home is the ultimate solution for multigenerational living. According

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

to John Graham, co-author of Together Again, a book about multigenerational living, and Professor of Marketing and International Business at University of California Irvine, “We are seeing the nuclear family going back to the interdependence of the extended family. For the last 50 years the American ideal was the nuclear family living independently, but with the economic changes of recent decades that no longer is the solution of choice.” He added, “multigenerational living is very customary in most countries. It is now becoming much more common in the U.S. I am happy to see progressive builders like Lennar addressing this change”. The housing crisis expedited the shift to multigenerational living. Buyers want the most for their money and are strategizing long-term. Sherry and Timothy Biggs of Tampa considered resale homes but selected a Next Gen - The Home Within a Home by Lennar in the Ayersworth Glen community in Riverview, because it not only cost a great deal less, but also gave her parents a sense of privacy. “My parents are in their 60s and this home design appealed to their needs as well as ours”, said Ms. Gibbs. “They have their own separate entrance and suite which allows them to enjoy their independence “, she added. According to Sharon Graham Nieder-

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

haus, co-author of Together Again, after interviewing over 100 multigenerational families, “it became clear that the balance between proximity and privacy is the key to success”. Aging parents and children returning home after college are the obvious reasons for purchasing a Next Gen The Home Within a Home, but they are certainly not the only reason buyers are lining up. “We are seeing Next Gen homebuyers that use the separate suite for telecommuting, home offices, longterm guests and even man-caves”, says Mark Metheny, Division President of Lennar’s Central Florida Division. “The response has been amazing. Homebuyers love the Next Gen – The Home Within a Home concept. They also appreciate our attention to architectural detailing and all the extras that come, at no additional cost, with a Lennar Everything’s Included home,” he added. Next Gen - The Home Within a Home are being built in Concord Station in Land O’Lakes, Live Oak Preserve in New Tampa, Triple Creek in Riverview and River Bend in Ruskin, Florida. Unlike the offices most of us are familiar with, that come with the signature white walls, stacks of magazines, and fluorescent lights, Dr. Fortner’s office has plush furniture, a coffee table covered with interesting books on nearly every subject imaginable, and the exam rooms even have bounce ball chairs. Instead of white walls and sparse paintings, the art displayed at her office comes from local artists, and from the far corners of the world. Each of her examination rooms are a bit different, and over time her patients come to have favorite pieces of art, and as previously mentioned, often add to the décor themselves. Dr. Fortner calls the rooms in her practice, “un-waiting rooms,” since she is proud of her short wait times, the name totally fits. As a physician, Dr. Fortner focuses on internal medicine and clinical anti-aging, although she also has a great deal of experience in geriatric medicine as well. She helps many patients with issues such as diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol control, cancer screenings, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, sciatica, the common cold, and even urinary tract infections. So whether you have a cold, are concerned about a serious medical condition, or are interested in feeling and looking better by trying cosmetic treatments like Botox, Obagi or Juvederm, Dr. Fortner can help. Dr. Fortner also helps patients take part in clinical research trials, which can bring a lot of relief to patients at a very affordable price through her company, Innovative Clinical Research, LLC. She offers clinical trials that cover issues such as COPD, osteoarthritis of the knee and more, and the trials include samples and medicine. She is very focused on helping those in need, which is why she accepts most insurances, and even accepts patients who do not have insurance by offering cash pay. “There are so many people who have lost their insurance, and that is why I make sure I can help them.” Recognized as one of The Leading Physicians of the World in

2011, Dr. Fortner is part of “an elite fraction of physicians whose triumphs surpass the norm and whose knowledge is a guiding light for those in need.” In addition to that great honor, Dr. Fortner has also been voted the “America’s Top Physicians” award from 2007-2013, which is awarded by the Consumers’ Research Council of America. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Fortner has a number of professional affiliations and takes part in many volunteer activities nearby including “Support a Class” which provides school supplies and back packs for local school children through The Salvation Army. She has also been a sponsor for “Rock for Autism

Project” from 2008-2012, and a sponsor for the “Cinderella Project,” which helps to collect prom dresses for girls who are economically challenged. She says, “My father taught me that it’s important to give back to your community, and it’s important to give back to those who are in need of, not a hand-out, but a hand-up, and to always be a contributor to society.” The Internal Medicine & Clinical Anti-Aging Center is located at 5535 Grand Blvd., Suite C, in New Port Richey. Trinity Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs Traditional Worship for the Whole Family By Dara Tucker If you’re near the intersection of Little Road and Cypress Lakes Boulevard, across from the Mitchell Park soccer fields on a Sunday morning, you may hear the church bells ringing, welcoming you to be part of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs. The church has a comfortable atmosphere and provides two worship services on Sunday mornings for all ages of the family. Visitors immediately feel embraced by the congregation and staff, who are happy to provide you information about their nursery, Sunday school, or other needs you may have to make your worship experience uplifting. Pastor Philip Hollins received his Bachelor Degree from Montreat College in Montreat, North Carolina, and his Master of Divinity degree from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, Massachusetts. Reverend Hollins is married to Tracey

Hollins, the Director of Youth Ministries at Trinity Presbyterian. The couple, who live in the community and are enjoying raising their four children here, are easy to relate to and accessible to their congregation. Sunday worship services start with a less liturgical, more casual 9 a.m. service that has weekly communion. Sunday school for all ages meets at 10 a.m. in the Founder’s Hall, which is the building visible from Little Road. A more liturgical traditional service is at 11 a.m., and has communion the first Sunday of each month. Families are welcome to attend either service. One way Trinity Presbyterian Church lets even the youngest members be included in the worship service is through bags called Pew Pals. They are filled with items such as crayons, coloring sheets and prayer cards to keep them happily occupied before they are called up for the children’s sermon. A nursery is available for babies, or you may choose to watch and

listen to the service in the Family Comfort Room, a.k.a the “cry room.” This is an ingenious way to allow parents or grandparents to not miss the message while their baby gets some quiet time. Patty Spoor of New Port Richey has attended Trinity Presbyterian Church for four years. Patty enjoys bringing her granddaughter, who lives in St. Petersburg with her to church whenever she visits. “The Pastor’s sermons are great,” says Patty. “I just love the message.” Opportunities to Involve Yourself for More Joy There are numerous opportunities to be involved at Trinity Presbyte-

The prayer shawl ministries includes a group of women who knit together to make prayer shawls for families in either a time of need or celebration, such as a baby’s baptism. Pastor Hollins says that the prayer shawl ministries, like all their groups, are open to everyone to join in at any time. The Trinity Travelers is a group that plans excursions and outings, usually on a monthly basis. Some of their recent excursions have included trips to Tampa Bay Downs, ICE at Gaylord Palms, a winery tour, and a dolphin sightseeing cruise. Most of the trips

are day trips, but they have a 7-night Caribbean cruise planned for January. All of the events are open to anyone and you do not have to be a member of the church to attend. Trinity Presbyterian Church has sponsored many mission trips both locally and abroad, in addition to supporting youth mission trips. This year, 23 members, from ages seven through eighty-one, will be going on a mission trip for the church to Honduras. The group will be putting on a vacation bible school while they visit and will work at a medical clinic sponsored by Presbyterian churches in the area. Brain Balance of Oldsmar Shares Stories of Success It is a natural thing for a parent to want the very best for their child – to dream of their future and imagine it filled with smiles, happiness and success at every stage of life. So when it becomes clear that a child is going to have problems meeting the milestones that their peers are having no problems with – that the intricacy of their brain doesn’t fall into the “norm” – it is heartbreaking for the parents and the child. Sometimes it isn’t clear to parents that anything is wrong until their child starts school and their confidence level starts dropping as they struggle to perform in a world where they are expected to fall into place with the rest of the class. That is when the search begins for a way to help a child learn and grow; to achieve success despite their individual challenges. Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar, located at 4022 Tampa Road, is an achievement center designed to help children who have been labeled with or who exhibit signs of ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Tourette’s, learning disabilities or processing disorders. As the statistics for such conditions have grown exponentially over the last two decades, many parents have been given very little hope that their children will ever be able to grow properly and learn to succeed. Brain Balance offers hope and success. Owner and Director Larry Polnicky is a parent who knows firsthand how it feels to search far and wide for a solution. He opened Brain Balance in Oldsmar because the Brain Balance Center in Atlanta, Georgia was the best solution he and his wife

22

found for their son who has autism. In fact, it seemed like the only thing that did work. Since opening the Brain Balance in Oldsmar, the Polnicky family has known much joy, not only in seeing the growth and success of their own child, but in seeing the difference Brain Balance is making for local children and their families by helping them to succeed beyond the label, without medication, and with proven results. Personal Stories of Success at Brain Balance The following stories are personal stories that parents are willing to share about their children and the help they have received at Brain Balance. Neighborhood News & Lifestyles and Brain Balance would like to thank these folks for sharing such heartwarming stories with our readers. Respecting their privacy, we are not using full names. Soaring through Reading Levels––“My son was assessed for a new school today,” writes JF. “He was to start 4th grade. His reading comprehension level put him at 7th grade. I am thrilled. Six months ago in August he was just below 4th grade [level]. I know that Brain Balance has made the difference in his reading comprehension scores.” Calm, Focused & Learning––CS shares, “We have noticed our son is calmer, and if something does bother him, it is very short lived. He is transitioning better. His teacher has commented on how calm and focused he’s become. He’s had great days at school because of the great staff at Brain Balance! We are very excited to see how much more he

will achieve. His music teacher said he never raised his hand in class until today. He asked for the drum and played and hummed a classical piece of music that the teacher recognized right away! Thanks!” Travel Time is Well Worth It–– “We drive 2 1/2 hours one way and our son is worth every minute and mile spent on the road. Just 20 sessions and my son’s reading fluency and word reading has markedly improved. We are so proud of him! He loves coming to Brain Balance. His confidence has improved greatly too J. Thank you to such an awesome team of professionals who understand and care about children with learning challenges. It’s also a soft place to land as a parent. Thanks again!”_ KP Off Medication––“He is off all his meds,” shares parent JC. “He is losing weight and getting better

sleep. He has been acting out some still. His primary care doctor is going to try to find something natural for him. She has also recommended him getting counseling. He is more affectionate. Has a tutor and should be through with 9th grade by the end of June. He will have the opportunity to opt out for anything he can test out for.” Self-Aware and Socializing––DW writes about the great things that her daughter is experiencing after attending Brain Balance. “Here are just a few of the wonderful things that Brain Balance has done for Danielle. Most recently Danielle has stopped taking her “brain pill” as she called it. This was medication to help with focus. So far no negative effects noted from not taking it! She is eating better, exercising more, and requires less sleep. Physically stronger…she recently did a ropes

course, climbed a rock wall and did zip line. “She is calmer and less impulsive. This has been noticed by others is group settings and social gatherings. (It’s not just MY opinion!) She is controlling her voice level better. (Not as loud.) And is SELF regulating her actions more because she now has self-awareness. Conversations now on a more mature and age appropriate level. She is initiating social interaction on a more meaningful level at home, school and church. She is interacting and bonding with peers and building friendships and developing a more appropriate sense of humor. She has begun journaling in the form of art and short stories or comic strips. She is better able to grasp intangible concepts such as religious beliefs. What more could you ask for! But I know there is still more to come!” Great Strides Forward––TB of St. Pete writes of her daughter, “We went snorkeling off Grand Cayman and Cozumel - and she did fantastically! She kept track of all her gear, was able to navigate the reef with ease, and had the time of her life swimming with the dolphins! What a

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

trip!” Her mother’s letter also noted that Angela had made the high school bowling team. “She started her average (without bumpers) was around 29. With only two weeks of practice she’s up to a 55 average, and we’re looking to break 100. Her coach is wonderful and her teammates embrace her and cheer her just as they do each other. Tears came to my eyes the first time I saw her roll that ball right down the center. “Her exit testing wasn’t all that great - but then Angela has never been a test taker. She shuts down, and I don’t know if that will ever change. But I do know that these stories I relate to you, as well as many other “intangible” changes in her life are without a doubt related to her Brain Balance training and learning. Anecdotal or not, this girl has made some great strides, and we’re more excited than ever about her moving forward and being able to live a fulfilling, happy life. Thank you to your whole [Brain Balance] team - from the moment we walked in to the suite until we left we felt positive energy coming toward us.”

The Brain Balance Mission The Brain Balance Mission Statement is “to make the Brain Balance Program available to as many children as possible, that each child may reach their greatest physical, mental, social and academic potential.” In order to do this, education is key. The directors, coaches and founders of Brain Balance really want parents to understand that there is hope, that there can be success, and that their children have bright futures ahead of them regardless of labels or limitations.

Brain Balance offers free informative events for parents to come and learn about the details of the program and to see if it’s a right fit for their family. Guests who attend the free event are given a discount on the initial assessment. Call for details. The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Oldsmar is located at 4022 Tampa Rd., Suite 6. Please call (813) 475-6977 for additional information. Email them directly at oldsmar@brainbalancecenters.com or visit brainbalancecenters.com.

Find the Perfect Present at MacKinnon Jewelers By Julie Kanehl This Christmas avoid the madness of the mall, and find the perfect gift for the one you love at MacKinnon Jewelers. This beautiful jewelry store sells some of the most recognizable jewelry brands in America including Simon G., Pandora Jewelry, and Frank Reubel, just to name a few. Convenient to the entire Tampa Bay Area, MacKinnon Jewelers is located at the corner of S.R. 54 and Little Road, on the north side of Trinity’s Mitchell Ranch Plaza. MacKinnon Jewelers provides the quality jewelry that the customers in our area are looking for, making it the perfect destination for anyone on your holiday list. Owner and Master Jeweler, Tom MacKinnon, has been expertly perfecting his craft since 1985 and he continues to share his passion with everyone who enters into his store. He and his experienced staff are extremely gifted at helping people pick the very best presents, and their knowledge for their inventory in gemstones, bridal sets, watches and more is unparalleled.

34

Tom’s passion for creating jewelry began during high school when he was hired at a jewelry store in Panama City, Florida. It was there that the manager of the store recognized a talent in Tom, and where Tom began to learn the art of jewelry repair and jewelry creation. After high school, Tom moved to Sarasota where he worked with a wellrespected designer named Terry Coffrin. Tom was Coffrin’s apprentice for five years, and during that time he both taught and challenged Tom, allowing him to grow as a jeweler and as an artist. In 1985 Tom began to work at his bench performing “trade work,” which allowed him to do repairs and to create jewelry for stores in his area. He worked as a jewelry manufacturer for four years, and managed a trade shop for five years before he became a jeweler for Littman’s Jewelers at Countryside Mall. He worked at Littman’s Jewelers for eleven years and in 2004 opened MacKinnon Jewelers. Tom continues to pursue his education, has recently earned his Diamond Degree, his Pearl Degree and is work-

ing on earning his Graduate Gemologist degree from the Gemological Institute of America. Tom MacKinnon and his experienced staff, which includes Debbie Rocchio, Gale Arnold, Donna Todd and Mary Ann Brennan, are all waiting to help you with your holiday shopping at MacKinnon Jewelers in Trinity. “Everybody in the store has some form of formal jewelry training,” said Tom, “They have their Accredited Jewelry Professional Degree from the Gemological Institute of America, or something more. In fact, one of our sales personnel, Gale Arnold, is our resident Graduate Gemologist.” MacKinnon Jewelers also repairs jewelry, re-strings pearls, buys gold,

and replaces watch batteries. You’ll find trusted experience, an incredible inventory and fantastic customer service when you come into MacKinnon. Celebrate This Year’s Moments with Pandora Jewelry MacKinnon Jewelers has been the preferred Trinity Pandora store for years, and they have always been committed to their Pandora customers by helping them to explore all that is new within the gigantic jewelry line of bracelets, charms, pendants, earrings and more. Pandora Jewelry has taken the world by storm, and it’s no wonder, as this beautiful jewelry is expertly designed in Denmark, and handcrafted in Thailand. The concept of creating a threaded bracelet in sterling silver or gold, with charms that can be threaded on to create a “story” has completely changed the way women express themselves with jewelry. A Pandora bracelet makes the perfect gift for any of the lovely ladies in your life, because not only is it beautiful, but it is a gift that can grow and change throughout the years by adding charms that Pandora lovingly calls “Moments.” One of the best parts about Pandora Jewelry, besides the expert craftsmanship and the beauty of each charm, is the pricepoint. There’s a Pandora bracelet for every price range, style, and taste. Moments start at around $30, and right now Pandora and MacKinnon Jewelers is offering a fantastic holiday promotion that includes a Pandora Signature Clasp Bracelet, two “Twinkle-Twinkle” clips, and the limited edition “Black Friday” present charm for only $200. Hike for Hospice –– A Celebration of Remembrance By Katie Thomas Gulfside Regional Hospice celebrated their annual Hike for Hospice fundraising event on Sunday, Veteran’s Day, November 11th at Rasmussen College in beautiful Land O’ Lakes. For the past six years, Gulfside Regional Hospice has worked with volunteers throughout Pasco County to raise funds and create lasting memories for the community through the Hike for Hospice 5k event. “Hike for Hospice is designed to celebrate and honor the lives of friends and family members,” said Linda Ward, president and CEO of Gulfside Regional Hospice. “I walk in memory of my father, who passed away in Gulfside’s care. The Hike is for people just like you and me – who want to honor the memory of a loved one and make every day count for those facing a serious illness.” This year’s Hike for Hospice allowed me to honor the memory of people I have lost and the ceremony held in remembrance for the community was beautiful and inspirational. Hike for Hospice is full of compassion. Memorializing loved ones lost

and Veteran’s together in an atmosphere where the community comes together to meet, greet and support each other was a blessing to be a part of. Gulfside Regional Hospice is a big part of the support group, “We Honor Veterans.” Over 25% of Hospice patients are Veterans and Gulfside Regional Hospice dedicates themselves to raising funds to provide these Veterans with the special attention and care that they deserve. Many Veterans attended the Hike for Hospice event. Teams of active-duty troops joined in on the hike, in honor of our Country, Veterans and Hospice’s hard work. An Eventful Day to Be Remembered Hike for Hospice started at 7 a.m., opening with registration for runners and walkers participating in the 5k. All participants received a Hike for Hospice t-shirt, breakfast and beverages. At 7:45 a.m., before the hikers began, the Presentation of Colors was presented by the NOSC Tampa Color Guard from MacDill Air Force in honor of Veteran’s Day and the Hike for Hospice Event. The National Anthem was sung by Kelsey Bain and immediately

following the National Anthem, skydivers from Skydive City amazed the crowd with their parachuting skills and American flag decorated chutes. The performances and spectacular sights got the crowd excited for a fun-filled day. Linda Ward said, “The day was beautiful and we got to honor our veterans this year, with special presentations both before and after the Hike. From the starting line at the run until the memorial at the end of the day, you could feel the energy of the Hikers.” After the 5K, Gulfside’s bereave-

ment department started the program with a special presentation to celebrity guest, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers player, Mike Alstott. He has been a huge part of Hike for Hospice since its beginnings six years ago. A special moment was observed for kids affected by Hospice’s charitable services. Erik Hendrickson, 9, told his story about how hospice helped his family, after his great-grandparents and grandfather passed away. “The counselors helped me a lot by counseling the kid’s camp and group activities,” Hendrickson

said. “At the kids’ camp, I was able to meet new people and do fun activities like making a happy/mad pillowcase. This pillow really helped me get my mad and sad feelings out after my loved ones died.” Hike for Hospice’s Children’s Bereavement Program presented Mike Alstott with a collaborative piece of art in order to thank him for his dedication to Hike for Hospice. Hike for Hospice had many ways to remember our loved ones, which included a memory wall that allowed event goers the chance to write a memory of lost family members. Many people put up pictures of loved ones, along with stories explaining the journey Hospice helped their families with. A balloon memorial was available for peo-

ple to write the names of who they were memorializing on a piece of paper tied to the balloon. The memory balloons were released at the same time, after the memorial and award ceremony. Watching the hundreds of balloons fly away into the sky was a tear jerking moment for all of us remembering loved ones lost. The memorial and award ceremony began after the finish of the 5k hike. When hikers returned back, they had some time to eat, drink and gather with friends to share their stories of family and loved ones. Once the ceremony began, many heartfelt and compassionate stories were shared. Many people said that without Hospice helping them assist their loved ones into the next life,

they would not have been able to do it. Gulfside Regional Hospice’s mission is to provide compassionate, quality care to individuals and their loved ones as they face life-limiting illnesses. “We will help our patients to find relief from pain and suffering, so they may live each day with dignity, peace and comfort.” I believe that GRH is fulfilling their mission, the stories told and the success of the event show that they have really made a permanent, positive impact on our community. Awards were presented to teams that had participated in the race and raised astounding amounts of donations for Gulfside Regional Hospice. Awards went out to: First Place Team – Team Kenny - $1,950, Second Place Team – Vince’s VIPS - $1,845, Third Place Team – Kanehl’s Kids - $1,385, First Place Individual – Amanda Long $1,950, Second Place Individual – Janeen Comport Probst - $1,000 and Third Place Individual – Jo DeBolt $685. All proceeds from the Hike for Hospice are designated for patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses in Pasco County, as well as support programs at Gulfside’s Hospice Houses and Bereavement Centers. The Hike for Hospice has raised more than $300,000 for Gulfside Regional Hospice since it began in 2007 and this

year was able to raise more than $55,000! “The Hike for Hospice would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors,” said Ward. The Presenting Sponsor for the Hike for Hospice is Bouchard Insurance. The Medal of Honor Sponsor is AC-Healthcare Staffing and Placement Services. Guardian Angels Sponsors for the event are BB&T, Laser Rite Business Systems Tampa Bay and Rose Radiology. Stars and Stripes Sponsors include Alltrust Insurance, Kiwanis Club of Greater West Pasco, MedFleet, O2 Solutions Prudential Commercial Real Estate FL and Skydive City. deChant Public Relations, DJ’s Concepts, Proly, Laporte & Mulligan, P.A. and Rasmussen College are American Eagle Sponsors. This year’s Hike for Hospice charity event turned out beautifully and I am so pleased to have been able to experience the compassion, dedication and love that Gulfside Regional Hospice shares with their community. I am certainly looking forward to next year’s Hike for Hospice! If you would like to be a volunteer or make a donation to Gulfside Regional Hospice, visit their website at www.grhospice.org . Color is, by far, a passion at Salon Ke-Lani, in fact, Salon KeLani uses the Redken color lines, and each of their stylists are sent to New York City to attend the Redken Academy. This training takes color to another level for the stylists, and their clients rave over the results. Whether you are looking for something close to your natural color, or want to ramp it

The Battle Against ALS – Every Contribution Makes a Difference! By Alexis Selby After moving to the Cheval neighborhood in the beginning of 2011, Gary Dassatti and his wife Barb met a wonderful couple, Doug and Pat McGuiness. Doug has ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease – and has been battling this terrible disease for the past 10 years. He has traveled the world in hopes of finding a cure and has visited China several times for stem cell and lumbar puncture treatments, which have helped to extend his time here. Doug is a fighter and with the help of the ALS Association FL Chapter, hopes to find a cure in the future. Inspired by his story, after meeting Doug and some of the great people at the ALS Association FL Chapter, a national not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS, Gary, who had just retired and was looking to do some kind of volunteer work, became involved as a volunteer, fundraiser and advocate for ALS. Just recently, Gary also made a trip to Washington, DC for the annual ALS Advocacy Conference to try and gain more awareness of ALS and to get more funding for these efforts. Gary says, “This conference was a very re-

50

warding experience, but at the same time very emotional, as there were almost 100 ALS Patients in attendance in varied states of their progress with ALS. There were over 500 total Advocates from all over the United States and we had hundreds of meetings with offices of the Senate and Congress to fight for continued funding and more funding to support research.” About ALS ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a motor neuron disease that was first described in 1869 by the noted French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, named after the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig, who first brought national and international attention to the disease in 1939 when he abruptly retired from baseball after being diagnosed with ALS. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motor neurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. A common first symptom includes a painless weakness in your hand, foot, arm or leg, which occurs in more than half of all cases. Other early symptoms include speech, swallowing

or walking difficulty. The biological mechanisms that cause ALS are only partially understood and the only known cause of ALS is a mutation of a specific gene – the SOD1 gene. This mutation is believed to make a defective protein that is toxic to motor nerve cells. The ALS Association Florida Chapter Established in 1985, The ALS Association is the only national not-forprofit health organization dedicated solely to the fight against ALS. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure. The ALS Association Florida Chapter was co-founded by patient Ann Smith in August of 1987 as the Tampa Bay Chapter, in hopes of serving the needs of those living with ALS and their caregivers in the Tampa Bay Area. After expanding its services to all areas in the state of Florida in 2001, it became known as the Florida Chapter and now services the entire state. This chapter carries out its mission by empowering the lives of those living with ALS through care, advocacy, research, education and support. Their programs include support groups, case management, respite care, medical equipment loans, educational services, and national and state advocacy. Throughout the year the ALS Association FL Chapter holds many

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

fundraising events, including their annual Ride to Defeat ALS. Annual Ride to Defeat ALS The first annual event, the Tour de Vie 2009, was headed by Shelly Reale after ALS devastated her family with her mother’s diagnosis, as a way to give meaning to her mother’s difficult journey. This event yielded more than 200 riders and raised over $53,000 and due to its huge success, became an annual tradition. In 2010, the ALS Florida Chapter decided to change the event’s name to “Ride to Defeat ALS” which clearly defines their ultimate mission – a world without ALS! On November 3rd the ALS Florida Chapter held their annual Ride to Defeat ALS, a one-day cycling event designed to appeal to every level of rider – offering a 62-mile route, a 25mile route, and a 5-mile Family Fun Ride, which is presented by United Seating & Mobility. This ride is an exciting opportunity for everyone to work together to support those affected by Lou Gehrig’s Disease and to spread awareness of the urgency to find treatments and a cure. All-in-all the ride was a huge success and contributions for that day totaled over $240,000! Throughout the ride, every participant can count on support from start to finish with crew-manned rest stops,

SAG vehicles, and a safety team. Upon completing the tour, riders are welcomed back by cheering crowds and finish line festivities that include entertainment, complimentary massages, a healthy lunch, and exciting demos. This past race was a huge success. “The response from people was so great last year and I look forward to even better fundraising this year,” says Gary. It is because of caring, dedicated people like Gary and persistent fighters like Doug, that the ALS Association is possible. Over the past few decades, the ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to finding effective treatments and a cure for ALS and their

global research effort has helped increase the number of scientists working on ALS, advanced new discoveries and treatments, and has shed light on the complex genetic and environmental factors involved in ALS. But the fight is not over, and for the ALS Association to continue their search for a cure to this terrible disease, vital funding is needed. With your support, together we can one day defeat ALS for good! For more information on the ALS Association Florida Chapter or to make a donation please visit their website at www.ALSAFL.org or their Facebook page.

Riverside Grille House has four private banquet halls, and thousands of square feet of beautiful dining rooms and open area seating. This restaurant can accommodate every occasion; whether you are having a wedding ceremony on the Veranda, a banquet, a large party with hundreds of people, a wedding reception, a corporate luncheon or just want to have a nice dinner; Riverside Grille House is the ideal place. “I attended a wedding at the Veranda this past weekend,” writes Judy. “We had a wonderful Prime Rib

They are also looking to add a Comedy Club and Cigar Bar in the near future. “Once everything is up and running, Riverside will be the perfect place for a full night out,” says Louis. Take in the serene beauty of Tarpon Springs and watch the ships pass through the marina atop Riverside Grille House’s breathtaking rooftop dining or inside their elegant indoor dining room. Regardless of where you sit, the view alone is sure to leave you speechless and the food, always made with the freshest ingredients, will surely wow your taste buds. Come to Riverside Grille House and treat yourself to a wonderful night out – you deserve it! “Pikos Institute” Continued from page 1 Dr. Pikos explains, “What I teach is a sub-specialty of implantology. Bone grafting has been my forte over the years and this is one of only three facilities in our country that features what I’m teaching. Grafting allows us to reconstruct areas of the mouth that are lost for a number of reasons. We are able to rebuild lost bone and gum tissue using a combination of not only the patient’s own tissue, but also with tissue engineering technology.” Dr. Pikos has every reason to feel very proud of his accomplishments. “This is a very unique Institute within the realm of implantology. My Institute is the second longest running program in the country and I’m very honored to be able to share my expertise with my colleagues.” Many in the Tampa Bay area know of Dr. Pikos and his practice, Coastal Jaw Surgery for Implant & Oral Reconstruction with offices in Palm Harbor, Spring Hill and Trinity. Known as the “doctors’ doctors,” Dr. Pikos and his associates at Coastal Jaw Surgery are the trusted physicians that hundreds of dental and medical professionals refer their patients to, as well as their friends and family members. Coastal Jaw Surgery

He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the following institutions: The Ohio State University, College of Dentistry and Nova Southeastern University, College of Dental Medicine. He is also a Courtesy Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Periodontology, and Department of Prosthodontics, at the University of Florida, College of Dentistry. Dr. Pikos is on the Editorial Board of the following journals: Implant Dentistry, Case Reports in Dentistry, and the Journal of Implant and Advanced Clinical Dentistry. He is also a member of the Scientific Board of ImplantNews magazine. He is a well-published author who has lectured extensively on dental implants in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Dr. Pikos is an active member and frequent lecturer for the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Academy of Periodontics, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and the International Congress of Implantology. He serves on the editorial board for Implant Dentistry, the official journal of the ICOI as well as the Scientific Board of ImplantNews magazine. Building a Legacy – Pikos Implant Institute The Pikos Implant Institute has grown throughout the years and has always brought dental surgeons to our area. However, the new facility (previously the Wachovia Bank building on Mitchell Blvd.) will be an even bigger boon to our local economy with yearround classes bringing in dentists who will be using area restaurants and staying at our local hotels and golf resorts. In addition to the dental clinicians who are attending the Institute, the area will also benefit from exhibitors (26 representing 13 different companies) who will need lodging and food. Dr. Pikos first started teaching in the upstairs area of his Palm Harbor office which he says could hold 20 people in tight quarters, but as the program grew he had to find a larger place to accommodate his lectures and moved across the street to the Suncoast Hospice building on Tampa Road where the Institute operated for 10 years and he was able to have 30 clinicians in attendance. The new facility will hold 50 comfortably but Dr. Pikos limits his courses to 32 attendees. “Graduate students in residence from University of Florida College of Dentistry, Nova and The Ohio State University all come here for training,” says Dr. Pikos. Trinity Area Neighborhood News

“Nova residents shadow me for two weeks at a time.” “This facility was physically built not just as a teaching institute for implantology, but also for our Coastal Jaw Surgery practice and our dental colleagues in four counties – Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas – and their staffs to use for a teaching facility,” says Dr. Pikos. The Pikos Implant Institute will also serve as the new meeting location for Pinnacle Study Club of Tampa Bay, an inter-disciplinary study club that is in its 23rd year with 54 members who meet eight times a year. The group has been meeting at East Lake Woodlands Golf Club in years previous. Beyond State-of-the-Art The Pikos Implant Institute really makes the term “state-of-the-art” seem inadequate. Not only is the décor throughout the building elegant and immaculate; every detail has been considered to ensure that dentists have an extraordinary learning experience. The large Exhibit Hall is comfortable and accommodating and the Teaching Auditorium is equipped with the best sound system available, acoustical ceiling, roomy individual seating and a huge projection screen (18’ x 6’) and hardwiring allows the surgeons to watch procedures as they are being performed at Coastal Jaw Surgery. And that is just Phase I; Phase II is currently underway and will provide the Institute with its own operatory with a large plate-glass window through which the attendees can watch surgical procedures; the Operatory is equipped with three cameras – one on the patient, one on the doctor and one overlooking the room. There also will be several private Operatories built where attendees will receive hands-on training. The program is very interactive and Dr. Pikos encourages his colleagues to ask questions as they watch procedures. Dr. Pikos says, “We are unique in that we are able to maintain cuttingedge technology in-office, such as CT scan units specifically for the head and neck utilizing CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). We were the first to have CBCT in Tampa Bay when we added it in 2005 and the second in Florida. This technology along with tissue engineering technology and related technologies that I’ve brought to Coastal Jaw Surgery and the Institute throughout the years has provided a background where I have long-term follow-up with patients and as a result, I’m able to show what works literally over time. Therefore, we are very science-based.” Dr. Pikos has made it his mission to provide surgical and technology

based training programs in an intimate setting with limited attendance and a learning environment that fosters enthusiastic camaraderie amongst colleagues. Other dentists have responded to Dr. Pikos’ program with enthusiasm because they leave the Pikos Implant Institute with new knowledge that they can take back to their patients, and they are very appreciative of Dr. Pikos unique skills and teaching abilities. James Maxwell, OMS, from Springfield, OH says, “The constant availability of the speaker and willingness to interact with the attendees is unparalleled. The marriage of evidence based material and years of clinical experience is unrivaled.” And Neil Sullivan, OMS, from Annapolis, MD writes, “The pursuit of dental implant surgical excellence is thriving at the Pikos Implant Institute.” Dr. Pikos is very thankful to his staff and others who have been a big part of making the Pikos Implant Institute into the cutting-edge facility that it is today. “It was a real collaborative effort,” says Dr. Pikos. “I am so blessed. Our Coastal Jaw Surgery staff is fantastic – they really are incredible, from the assistants to the front desk and office administrator Kathy Diaz. Invaluable to him is the Pikos Implant Institute team: Administrator Alison Thiede, Mark

Robinson, Informational Technology Director, and Videographer Jami Walls. Dr. Pikos also wishes to thank the following people who were instrumental in bringing his dreams to reality: building contractor Robert Bandes of Bandes Construction Company, architect Mark Jonnatti of Jonnatti Architecture, decorator Jean Alli of Jean Alli Designs and the Superintendent of the building, John Brasher.
