From The Editor Kim Thomas

Random Acts of Flowers is Recycling Flowers & Delivering Smiles! Dawn LaCross has dedicated much of her time to helping others and after volunteering at more than 40 local charity organizations over the past 16 years, she had a desire bring to the area a non-profit organization that would make a difference locally, while also promoting recycling. After seeing a video featuring Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that began in Knoxville, TN with the mission to improve mental health through the power of giving flowers, Dawn knew she was on to something good. Dawn says, “Once I saw the video, I tracked down the founder. We have the largest hospice in the entire world right here and more ALFs (assisted living facilities) and nursing homes per capita than anywhere in the nation – we need this!” Even though Random Acts of Flowers Pinellas is new to our area, Dawn and fellow philanthropists Monica Kok and Pam Ora, along with

their dynamic volunteers, are already making a difference! “Our mission is filled over and over again within a 24-48 hour period after we receive flowers,” explains Dawn. “We never take in anything and send it out the same way. We take in the flower donations and set up a triage area, where the dead and dying flowers are composted and the rest are freshly cut and put into arrangements with fresh minerals.” I found out about Random Acts of Flowers Pinellas when I met Pam Ora at MacKinnon Jewelers in Trinity. Tom MacKinnon and jewelry designer Phillip Gavriel donated a portion of proceeds from the Phillip Gavriel trunk show (held December 5th) to RAF of Pinellas. RAF volunteers collect donated flowers from weddings, memorial services, wholesale florists, grocery stores and churches, and even from in-

The flowers are then refashioned into bouquets to deliver to local hospitals, hospices and assisted living facilities to those who need an emotional boost. Imagine the joy and surprise of a 90-year-old lady receiving a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Now, imagine how great it must have been for the RAF volunteers when she shared that it was the first time in her life anyone had ever given her flowers! That is what happened during the very first delivery that the ladies of Random Acts of Flowers made at Mease Manor. Dawn was happy that her husband Jim Davis – who made a large donation to RAF by purchasing the delivery van for the organization – and her 20-year-old son Zachary were able to be there to share in the joy of that first delivery. Dawn’s daughter Isabella, 14, takes part too. In fact, RAF has proven to be a great bonding experience for its volunteers and their families. Monica Kok’s daughter Megan volunteers making the beautiful bouquets, and her mother Helga donated

the warehouse in Dunedin which is spacious and has a large, temperaturecontrolled room where the donated flowers are kept. Helga, Monica and Megan enjoy working together, three generations strong, to bring a smile to those who need a little emotional lift. RAF delivers on Tuesdays to local hospitals and on Thursdays to nursing homes, hospice care facilities and ALFs. The nurses and staff decide who should receive a bouquet. On the day that I visited, volunteers were able to send 35 bouquets to patients. A card is in each bouquet stating RAF’s mission on one side and the names of the donors on the other side. How You Can Contribute There are several ways to help. Of course, RAF would love to have the flowers donated from any events, as well as vases that can be used to hold the arrangements. Nancy Donaldson of New Port Richey has already repurposed over 250 vases that she has collected from neighbors, friends and even yard sales. Founding Sponsorships available include Orchid Grower ($10,000+); Lily Grower ($5,000); Iris Grower ($2,500); Rose Grower ($1,000);

Hot Tuna Sushi Bar & Grille - Contemporary Style & Fresh Fare! By Katie Thomas Just around the corner from East Lake on Tampa Road is a fantastic locale for fresh seafood, hand-rolled sushi and delicious cuisine in an upbeat atmosphere. Hot Tuna Sushi Bar & Grille is a must-see, must-taste new restaurant that exceeds traditional sushi restaurants with contemporary style and twists on your favorite sushi rolls. The ambiance is perfect for a date, dinner with friends and family or a healthy lunch. Hot Tuna opened this past May in the Oldsmar community, offering diners a chance to fall head over heels for well-prepared and beautifully presented fare. Hanh and her family opened Hot Tuna after their success with their sister store, Sushi Alive in Carrollwood. The family has been in the restaurant business for many years, and enjoys providing new spins on traditional Asian cuisine. The chefs and sushi chefs came over from Sushi Alive and have years of experience and talent that translates into culinary creations that are fun and fresh! “We rebuilt this entire place to be

the perfect setting for Hot Tuna,” says Hanh. “Hot Tuna features beautiful lighting, a stylish sushi bar, miniature rock gardens and intimate table settings in a tastefully decorated fashion. Upbeat music plays throughout the restaurant at the perfect level; guests feel as if they have entered an upscale, yet casually swank restaurant. The menu at Hot Tuna offers diners a diverse selection of masterpieces. Hanh says, “We are more than just a sushi place. We have lobster, steak, teriyaki bowls and other tasty entrées. Some people don’t like sushi, so we strive to offer many options, so people in your party aren’t feeling left with only sushi to choose from.” Hot Tuna features a delicious array of appetizers. I chose to sample the steamed edamame, which are topped with a delicious lemon-infused sea salt. I also tried Stuffed Mushroom Caps, which are absolutely mouthwatering. The tempura button mushrooms are stuffed with Hot Tuna’s signature spicy tuna mix, topped with garlic and drizzled with teriyaki; they are melt-in-your-mouth delicious! This Holiday Season Be Fabulous Yet Frugal by Shopping at Clothes Mentor! By Julie Kanehl Ladies, if you’re like me, and you want to have all of the latest brands and dip a toe into all of the latest trends, but don’t want to spend the money, then you’ve got to start shopping at Clothes Mentor in Palm Harbor. Located in the Fountains Plaza at 34888 US Hwy 19 N, right behind The Wing House, Clothes Mentor is a fashionista’s best-kept secret. At Clothes Mentor you can get all of the brands you love for less than even the discount stores! Owned by husband and wife team Dick and Kathleen Murdock, the Clothes Mentor in Palm Harbor has seen a successful launch since they opened their doors in 2011. The Palm Harbor location is just one of 98 retail locations within 25 states. It is also one of the fastest growing stores in the country and it’s not hard to see why. When you step foot into the beautifully merchandised store, you’ll think

14

you’ve just stepped into a high-end women’s boutique! Well, you have! Everything in the store is recent merchandise from some of the hottest brands on the market, from White House Black Market, BCBG and Ann Taylor to Michael Kors, Steve Madden, Coach, Brighton and more. Whether you’re looking for an LBD (little black dress) to wow them at your holiday party, or you want to rock the hottest jeans on the market, a girl can get an entire wardrobe of all of the hottest clothes at a fraction of the cost by shopping at Clothes Mentor. Women come from all over the Tampa Bay Area not just for designer goods, but Clothes Mentor has all the popular brands together under one roof including favorites like the Gap, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor Loft, Old Navy, Express, Nine West, Vera Bradley, NY&CO, Chicos, Talbots and lesser known brands. It’s an exceptional assortment of choices not only of clothing but jewelry, shoes and

accessories. They come to purchase the brands they love at reduced prices, sell their own items, and see the constantly changing inventory that makes Clothes Mentor so unique. Dick says, “Clothes Mentor is retail therapy that women can afford. We offer a great selection for women size 0 to 3X. We have over 15,000 items in stock, and today we have 170 designer purses available to our customers.” Dora, a customer who comes all the way from Tampa on a regular basis to shop, says, “I have been coming here regularly since the beginning of the summer because I love the boutique atmosphere and the attention that they give you. They have a lot of high-end items here that I love, and you cannot beat the prices.” I Received Cash on the Spot! While you can come to shop, come to sell or come to do both, the truth is, Clothes Mentor is the afford-

able designer boutique that it is because they only accept the finest merchandise. Unlike traditional consignment shops, Clothes Mentor will only take in freshly laundered, very gently worn merchandise of all popular brands and designers. They don’t just take any old thing, which is good because that’s what keeps this store hopping with customers who can’t believe how they found a Calvin Klein sweater that still had its original tags on it for around $20, or a pair of brand name, kneehigh leather boots for half the price as the store down the street. It’s good that they are picky! It’s what makes the store such a fabulous place to shop!

East Lake Area Neighborhood News

Kathleen says, “There are thousands of items in our store that still have their original tags on them! That makes a great deal for you, and these items make great gifts for others as well!” Another thing that makes Clothes Mentor so special is that they pay cash on the spot for the things that you probably still have hanging around in your closet. You know, those shoes that you thought you’d wear but never did, or the purse that you wore for a week before you went back to your old standby? How about the designer bag that your mother-in-law bought you? Gorgeous, but not for you? This is the place to turn the items from your closet that you’re not wear-

ing, into the items that you’ve been longing for. When I came into Clothes Mentor, I brought three bags of goodies from my closet. I brought mostly old purses and jackets from major brands. While I looked around the store and marveled at their selection of shoes, eveningwear, jeans and handbags, they inspected and input my items into their database. Clothes Mentor’s database can tell them how old an item actually is and what it’s worth, which takes all of the guesswork out of the equation! In fact, after just a few minutes they may know more about your clothing than you do! Did you know that designer labels change every few years, or even months? Some brands actually date stamp them! That’s just one of the ways that Clothes Mentor keeps their inventory fresh and at the top of its game. While I shopped I was impressed to find that each item that I saw in their store looked brand new and, honestly, didn’t look like consignment clothing. While I was shopping I found an amazing new name-brand jacket and a large Steve Madden bag that still had its original paper stuffing and included its protective dustcover. I

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: REALITIES By Dr. Wayne Adams, Former Dean and Full Professor of a Graduate School of Business About now, parents throughout Florida are waking up to some hard realties about the SAT and ACT Examinations. As correctly predicted in the Tampa Bay Times article last April, the dramatic increases in the minimum qualifying SAT and ACT scores for these scholarships are eliminating 50% - 75% of students for 2014 who would have been eligible if they had graduated in 2013. Most of the damage has been done in the Florida Medallion Scholars level, where the minimum eligibility thresholds have been increased on the SAT from 1070 to 1170, and on the ACT from 22 to 26. The new requirements for the Florida Medallion Scholars on the SAT increased from 1270 to 1280, and on the ACT from 28 to 29. For the past three years, the reality is that Florida students have continually ranked around 45th in the key category of student performance on the SAT and ACT compared to

16

other states. Our school programs are clearly not working to improve scores against this national standard, which cannot be influenced by local or state politics. Yet these scores continue to be vital for college admissions and scholarships. The positive reality is that our students can dramatically improve their SAT and ACT scores with focused, concentrated help. Improvement is like helping a student climb as high as possible on the part of their educational iceburg that towers out of the water. Learning strategies, specific test taking techniques, and working with my proprietary study guides consistently help students climb as high as they can. I cannot help broaden or deepen their academic foundation which it the eightninths under water. But I do help them do their best with where they are. My students normally improve 200 – 300 points on their combined

When any parent looks at the “before and after” essays, they are amazed. These students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, University of Chicago, Boston College, USC, UCLA, LSU, Berkley School of Music, UF, USF, UCF, Stetson, U Miami, New College of Florida, and many other outstanding colleges and universities. Many have received academic, athletic, and music scholarships. For seniors, increasing your score for Bright Futures and getting across the threshhold of SAT or ACT levels for your desired college can still be accomplished. For Juniors and Sophomores, there is no better

time to start preparing because practice and knowing what to do can greatly improve your scores, plus you can “cherry pick” your best score from different examinations, submit them, and colleges do not know they came from multiple examinations. Since these exams are graded on a curve, often students can score higher in the Winter and Spring when the number and quality of those taking the exams are lower. If you would like to talk more about how I can help your student, please contact me at 727253-0639 or wwa0811@gmail.com. Suncoast Arts Fest Brings Fine Art to Wesley Chapel By Dara Tucker The Suncoast Arts Fest at The Shops at Wiregrass keeps getting better with each passing year. For the past eight years, the Suncoast Arts Fest (SAF) has brought together quality artists and art lovers from Pasco, Hillsborough, and Pinellas Counties. It takes place in the heart of the Tampa Bay area, convenient to major interstates, at the Shops at Wiregrass on January 18 and 19, 2014. The show is held at the peak of the tourist season in Tampa Bay and traveling artists are encouraged to combine this show with other state shows in warm, sunny Florida. The Suncoast Arts Fest is a great way to spend the weekend, with up to 130 juried visual artists and craftsman lining up along the main street in Wiregrass, and musical entertainment is set up in the Center Court. There is also an interactive art area, the fresh works of emerging youth artists on display, and chalk artists showcase their work on the sidewalks – all taking place dur-

With the ample parking, restaurants and shops, The Shoppes at Wiregrass is a beautiful setting for an outdoor arts festivity. Pam Marron and Marj Golub are the event’s co-chairs. They know that by creating a quality fine arts show they are continuing to increase the awareness of the arts in Pasco

County, which has become the driving force of the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc. The primary goal is to pass the benefits and appreciation of all arts on to local youth. “Each year the funds raised from this event go toward helping the advancement of services for visual and performing art needs of kids in Pasco County Schools, both public and pri-

the Ringling College of Art and Design for Portfolio Day, where national arts colleges review works of aspiring art students in a variety of creative fields. Previously SAF funds were used to promote elementary school art where there have been cuts due to lack of funding in Pasco County. “Our goal is to raise money for scholarships. We’ve built a website that serves as a streamlined resource for youth striving to pursue a career in the arts fields,” explains Pam Marron. WJQB 106.3 FM has joined the event to promote arts across Pasco County. An Interactive Arts Area promotes visual art for children by exposing them to hands-on art activities. Sand art is an example of one of the activities available for the children to create. Select tenth through twelfth graders from Pasco County schools will also have their art displayed in the Emerging Artist Area. In addition to the fine arts show in Wesley Chapel at The Shops at Wiregrass, other organizations such as Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art in Tarpon Springs, Pasco Arts Council, The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, PHCC Alric Pottberg Gallery at the

Port Richey campus, Pioneer Florida Museum, the Main Street Art Gallery in downtown New Port Richey and the West Pasco Art Guild, are partner organizations that offer a variety of additional arts options. The Suncoast Arts Fest promotes cultural awareness in Pasco County, Florida and benefits “Arts for Kids,” a supplemental arts education funding program for area schools. All proceeds benefit “Arts for Kids” by way of a grant created by the parent nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization known as the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc. Proceeds from this show and other related SAF activities supplement arts education funding in Pasco County’s public, private and charter schools. Come out to The Shoppes at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel to enjoy fine art in a beautiful, central location, while supporting a great cause. For more information about The Suncoast Arts Fest at The Shops at Wiregrass January 18 & 19, visit www.SuncoastArtsFest.com. Sponsors, artists, youth entertainers and volunteers can contact the SAF via e-mail at info@suncoastartsfest.com or call 727-375-8986.

And the Crowd Goes Wild for Schrader’s Little Cooperstown By Julie Kanehl Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, “Shoeless Joe,” Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio––Take me out to the ballgame! In 2010, we wrote a story about a local resident who had turned an entire wing of his home into an amazing shrine to baseball, sports and celebrity memorabilia. When we first met Dennis “The Menace” Schrader, and his lovely wife Mary (who is quite possibly the bigger baseball fan), they gave us a private tour of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, which at the time was a collection of 4,000 autographed baseballs, beautifully displayed and protected in a 12’ x 14’ bedroom in their home that had been renovated into a vault so secure, that it was reminiscent of James Bond or Mission Impossible. Offering private tours to people of all ages who heard about his collection, Dennis said, “The beautiful thing about this collection is sharing it,” of course, at that time, it meant giving tours into his own home, sometimes two or three times a day! Calling it a collection isn’t quite the right word. This Largo High School Hall of Famer (for basketball) owns the

22

largest privately owned autographed baseball collection in the entire world. His collection’s popularity has gone worldwide, earned a coveted Guinness Book of World Records Certificate, and found a new home at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, where Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is on loan for the next twenty years. Yes, I said twenty years, and that’s because a collection like this deserves to be shared and enjoyed by everyone who has a love for the sport. The Grand Opening of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown opened to much deserved fanfare in October, and now baseball fans of all ages can come and experience this incredible and historic exhibit. Created to make you feel like you’ve walked into a sports almanac, this beautiful exhibit is a living representation of the growth and change that baseball has left on history, and there are balls that represent players young and old, both Hall of Famer and Rookie, from the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Tampa Bay Rays, and every team in between. A Home Run Ticket! It all started with Mickey Mantle, who used to come down here for

Spring Training, and a nine-year-old Largo native getting his first autographed ball. It was the love of baseball passed down from a father to his son, and a passion that grew from there. For Dennis, it became autographed balls in shoeboxes and Rubbermaid containers. As the years went by, they were stashed under beds and in the attic, and as Dennis’ collection grew and grew, he was just hoping to have a place in his house so that he could enjoy them. As collectors, Dennis and Mary have collected a good deal of these balls personally, and have witnessed them being signed. Mary, who is Dennis & Mary pose in front of the known for always having a baseball Schrader’s Little Cooperstown exhibit at and a pen handy, said, “We’ve had at the St. Petersburg Museum of History least a thousand of these balls autographed in our presence.” he was looking for, he went over to Every autographed ball has a story, Myers, tapped him on the shoulder and and each one has come to the exhibit said, “Sign this for Mary, she’s good in its own way. For example, one day people.” Mary was trying to catch the eye of As for how the rest were obtained, Rookie of the Year, Wil Myers, who Dennis would write a letter to retired was having a conversation in the players and even celebrities asking them dugout with Coach Joe Madden, and if they’d sign a ball. This letter writing Evan Longoria said, “What do you became a passion for him, as it was a need, Mary?” When he realized what real way to connect to the people in

baseball’s history. He would ask them nicely and tell them how he had a private collection that wasn’t for sale, and would they mind signing if he sent them a ball. How’s that for a lesson in the importance of letter writing? He’s received hundreds and hundreds of balls for his collection that way. Sometimes he would get autographed pictures as well. It was in this same way that collected 170 baseballs from the men in the Negro League, and obtained 160 autographed balls from the women who played baseball while the boys were a war in the AAGPBL. He has also been fortunate enough to receive contributions from star players who have been informed of this amazing exhibit. He’s also received others through online auctions. One of Dennis’ favorite balls, if he could narrow it down, would probably be the one that was generated when they opened the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. There was 26 members inducted that day, but only eleven players were still alive at the time. He has a baseball signed by all eleven along with the original ticket admitting one to the opening ceremony on June 12th, 1939. Seeing that ball is worth the trip right there. There are also a lot of baseballs that are signed by celebrities outside

the realm of baseball, which makes the exhibit fun for everyone. From Elvis Presley to a ball signed by Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio when they were married, to Arnold Palmer, Bob Barker, Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Martin Sheen, Randy Travis, Thomas Kinkade (who autographed his ball and added his signature lamppost insignia), Henry Winkler, Regis Philbin, and Betty White, just to name a few. How One Man’s Passion Became a Grand Slam! Once the word got out, people would come from all over the world to see the Schrader’s collection of baseballs. They’d stand in the Schrader’s house and just go from ball to ball in awe and wonder, remembering players, and discussing stats. Eventually the right people came, people like local legend and philanthropist, Gus Stavros, who absolutely loved it, and thought that it belonged in a place where everyone could enjoy it. Dennis says, “The next thing you know, the Mayor of St. Petersburg and all of his friends showed up at my house and said, ‘This has got to be in St. Pete!’” Over the next two years, the entire community came together to raise the

$250,000 necessary to make the museum into what it is today, and it’s a wonder to behold. You don’t have to have season tickets to appreciate the love that has gone into this exhibit. Whether they visited Schrader’s Little Cooperstown when it was at Dennis and Mary’s house, or in its newfound home in St. Petersburg have been impressed with the amount of knowledge, love, and effort that have gone into it. Far more than a bunch of old baseballs, Little Cooperstown is one of St. Petersburg’s newest treasures. Dennis told me that even, Bill Rasmussen, founder and CEO of ESPN Sports said it was the, “Greatest baseball collection I’ve ever seen,” after visiting. What makes the collection complete are the people who come to visit the museum who watched these people play, who knew that player at another time. It’s the kids’ faces when they think about just how long baseball players have been coming to our state. It’s the group of Little League kids who dream of writing their name on a ball for the museum someday. It’s the Rotary Club members who come in by bus, and even use walkers and glasses to find their favorite players, but who float out on a cloud nine made of happy memories. Who knows how many baseballs Schrader’s Little Cooperstown will have in 20 years, but one thing is for sure, and that is that baseball is more than a game––for those who love this sport, baseball is everything that is good and wholesome about being a kid. It is what being an All-American is really about. It’s about rounding the bases,

catching the fly, and getting nose-tonose with that ump, even if it’s only in your imagination. Baseball has captivated the hearts of boys and girls in our community for a century. Next year St. Petersburg will be celebrating their centennial anniversary of hosting Spring Training teams. In a peanutshell, baseball is an integral part of who we are, and now we’ve got a chance to get up close, and in a way, personal, to some of those people that made the sport so great. The St. Petersburg Museum of History is located at 335 Second Ave. N.E., and is an amazing destination in itself, featuring, of course, Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, as well as other interesting installations that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ve absolutely got to get down here and check this out. In fact, if you’re looking for something fun to do with your family and friends this holiday season, this exhibit is something that everyone can enjoy, and it’s just a short walk away from restaurants, shopping and more. Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is located in the St. Petersburg Museum of History on 335 Second Avenue N.E. in St. Petersburg. Hours are Tues. – Sat., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and 1 p.m.–5 p.m. on Sun.; closed Mon. General admission to the museum is $15, Senior Citizens over the age of 60 are $12, students with ID are $9, and children are $9. Children under 6 are free. To reach the museum, call 727-894-1052 or visit their website at www.spmoh.com. You can also visit Dennis Schrader’s website at www.littlecooperstown.com.

Orbit 19 Lounge – Good Vibes, Good Times! By Lenay Ruhl Seated at the bar in the center of a dimly lit Orbit 19 Lounge in Holiday, FL, co-owner Dadia Janevska takes a sip of her favorite drink, Summer’s Long Lost Love. A perfect blend of fresh cucumber, ginger, mint, Hendrick’s Gin and St. Germaine liqueur, the drink represents Dadia’s time in France and how her world travels mixed with her family history of 40 years in the liquor and wine business landed her at Orbit 19. The lounge is connected to Universal Fine Wine and Spirits liquor store, operated by her brother Rob. Dadia JanEvska and Rob JanEvski co-own Orbit 19 Lounge and Univeral Fine Wine and Spirits. The location has won multiple “Best of the Bay” awards from Creative Loafing and rightly so, with 250 different types of liquor. If they don’t have what you want, they’ll bring it over from next door. They also have 19 different beers on tap. For those who don’t drink alcohol, there are

34

cappuccinos and espresso. The lounge has something for everyone––music to live comedians, specials and events every night, burlesque shows and themed parties throughout the year. The age group of the patrons ranges from 21 to about 65 years old. Dadia’s passion is music, fashion, food, and most of all...cocktails! “We cater to anything from DJs to bands,” said Dadia. They have DJs and VJs during the week and live bands on Friday nights. “I like to find new up-andcoming bands,” said Dadia. “We take pride in not only bringing in the best local talent, but national acts.” Some noteworthy bands that have played at Orbit 19 are: a national surf rock group that formed in Auburn, AL called Man Or Astro-Man?; an American indie/neo-psych band called Sons of Hippies from Sarasota; surf/rock band Beach Day from Hollywood, FL; Clearwater’s The Stick Martin Show; a rockabilly band, the Psycho Devilles, from Atlanta, GA; and a western swing band called the Cadillac Bombers from New Port

Richey, amongst others. “The music ranges from ska to punk to rock n roll to surf… electric… it varies,” said Dadia. She continues on, “blues, rockabilly, soul and funk.” They have nationally known DJs as well, including DJ Jask, DJ Three and DJ Monk. Dadia points out the entertainment in the room, complete with a pool table, darts, pinball machine and foosball. The bar is complete with a jukebox that looks like a giant iPod where people can pick songs from iTunes. There is one thing missing from the music selection. “No country or heavy metal,” said Dadia. “Because

it just distorts the vibe.” Orbit 19 Specials The lounge has specials every night. Mondays are open mic with Stick Martin and $2 import drafts. Wednesday they have Soul House Radio with DJ Lyndon and $3 premium vodka drinks. Thursday is Vintage Youth with VJ Jason Barco playing music videos and $2 kraft beers. “I spelled kraft with a “K”… that’s just kinda our quirkiness,” said Dadia. Saturdays they are starting “SO WHAT CHA WANT?” with DJ Fader playing old school hip hop and mash up, featuring $3 rum cocktails.

It makes you feel like you’re in NYC, LA, Chicago.” On Sundays they have 2-4-1 Bloody Marys and Mimosas all day and night (1 p.m. to 2 a.m.). “It’s the kind of place you can bring your mother, your daughter,” said Dadia. They’ve had wedding receptions and bachelorette parties, and have a good group of regulars. As Dadia sits at the bar her patrons come up and give her a hug, displaying the strong sense of community at Orbit 19. karaoke nights. They are special because it’s something Dadia doesn’t usually do, but she has received plenty of requests for it. They are calling the events “Shout it Out With GLEE!” – a special Holiday Karaoke series with KJ Rick Conti. Seasonal winter ales will be available on tap. Complimentary wasabi peanuts and organic hickory-smoked almonds are served upon request. As far as shots, there are many unique and fun blends such as the bottle rocket, a tall citrus shot garnished with an orange. “We garnish almost everything we have,” said Dadia. Universal Fine Wine & Spirits and the attached Orbit 19 lounge are open 365 days a year no matter what. “We never close down; if there’s a hurricane, tropical storm, you name it WE ARE ALWAYS OPEN!” said Dadia. Orbit 19 Lounge hours are 1 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily. Universal Fine Wine and Spirits is open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. The venue recently upgraded to a brand new sound system complete with Meyer Speakers. “Most of the shows are free,” said Dadia. “Every once in a blue moon, there is a small

cover but usually only when there is a big name act playing and sometimes...not even then. Dadia has high hopes for 2014 including an organic tapas menu and an outdoor area with more beer choices. “It’s not your typical lounge next to a liquor store,” said Dadia. “It’s the best kept secret!” Orbit 19 is located at 1542 US 19 N in Holiday. “Simply Art” Continued from page 1 to offer in our classes,” explains Mary. “I feel very fortunate that we have some really fantastic artists working hand-in-hand with us. Every artist we work with joins in on our mission to provide wonderful, creative pieces of art. This is a team effort, we give the artists ideas, they give us ideas and then we bring it to class to share with the community!” Inspired by Creativity “I have always been a creative soul,” says Mary. “My degree is in theater, but during most of my career, I worked in business as a project manager for companies. I knew that eventually I would find my way back to the arts. I had been looking for an opportunity to explore my creative side. I’d always wanted an art gallery; so when Hannah and I sat down with my husband Mark, we came up with Simply Art Studios, a place where people can simply create!” Simply Art Studios is both a gallery and a classroom. Hannah has a degree in art history and her passion lies in helping people create beautiful memories for themselves. She is the op-

erations manager at Simply Art Studios, as well as the jewelry design leader. Hannah says, “I love when people leave and absolutely love the painting or jewelry they have made. It is so refreshing to spend a night creating with a group of people that you help inspire.” Hannah explains that even though everyone is following the same guidelines, each person has a different style or brush stroke, so no two paintings are ever the same. “It is uniquely yours,” says Hannah. “Whether you are experienced in the craft or a beginner, we accommodate everyone. No one gets left behind and people with experience aren’t bored because we keep it fun and fresh! There is no intimidation here, just fun and simple art!” Artistic Spirits Soar at Simply Art “What I’ve noticed is that a lot of adults have not allowed themselves to be creative since they were very young,” says Mary. “We want to give people the permission and atmosphere where they can follow simple easy steps to end up with a wonderful creation. This is a very therapeutic and fun environment for everyone. We strive to give people permission to explore their creativity again!” Simply Art Studios truly focuses

on opening the doors up for you to come in and allow your creative spirit a chance to break free and mix art and entertainment. You can bring your friends, family, coworkers or come for an evening to meet new friends. Classes at Simply Art Studios are recommended for guests 17 and up, Wear your own jewelry designs! “Trinity Spine” Continued from page 1 The Trinity Spine Center is very unique in its approach, and is at the forefront of stem cell research to reduce back pain. As a result, Trinity Spine Center draws patients from all over the state and the nation. It’s no surprise, because patients there have the opportunity to meet with surgeons and receive diagnostic testing, as well as receive chiropractic care, attend physical therapy and even receive pain management care all in one place, at their very own Trinity Wellness Center, an integral part of Trinity Spine Center. Patients appreciate this ease of care, because when your back hurts, traveling all over town from one doctor to the next can be a difficult and painful thing to do. George, a Trinity Spine Center patient said, “I went to see Dr. Hayes after I read an article about him. I thought I would need back surgery after a car accident but since I’ve been going to Trinity Spine Center, I am feeling much better and I will probably not need surgery!”

Conservative Care by Doctors That Care The doctors and staff at The Trinity Spine Center believe that surgery should be a last resort, and as a matter of fact, 94 percent of their patients are treated without the need for spinal surgery. From degenerative disk or joint disease to scoliosis, and carpal tunnel to osteoporosis, Trinity Spine Center patients are treated by a team of highly educated and specifically trained professionals, who will work together to get patients back on their feet in no time. Having everything you need on hand and in one place gives patients peace of mind, but most importantly, it makes it easy for all of the doctors to communicate easily about the best approach to each patient’s unique medical condition and treatment. Chief Operating Officer, Jorit Wijnmaalen, DPT, MBA, MTC, CEAS, or “Dr. J” as he’s known, says, “One of the most important aspects of our patient care is the communication that we have with one another. We are never more than a phone call away and patients see that and really appreciate it.” Dr. J’s approach to wellness, exercise and nutrition is an inspiration

to many patients at The Trinity Spine Center, and he encourages patients to realize that no matter their age, size or condition, regular exercise will contribute to their overall health and wellbeing. The Trinity Spine Wellness Center offers patients the least invasive approach to spine care including physical therapy, chiropractic care, decompression therapy and even nutritional services. Dr. Ronald F. Stacey II, DC, is a Board Certified Chiropractor, and has been with Trinity Spine Center since 2009. He says, “We have an array of

specialties under one roof, and we can start conservatively and move each patient up to the next option if it’s necessary.” He adds, “It avoids having to have each patient see a chiropractor at one place, a primary at another, and so on. Here we can provide a plan of [total spinal] care.” Dr. Nathan A. Possert graduated from East Lake High School before honorably serving in the U.S. Navy for 4 years in which he was Quarter master and a search and rescue swimmer. After serving in the Navy, he graduated with honors from St. Petersburg College in Tarpon Springs in

While attending graduate school, Dr. Possert was able to work with high school athletes part time in Pinellas County as an Athletic Trainer for two years. Since graduating with his Doctorate, Dr. Possert has worked in the outpatient facility setting full time and in the hospital setting part time. and pain management. He utilizes an array of diagnostic tools to view the tissues in the body in order to see how the nerves in the body are functioning, and then he can perform procedures such as trigger point injections, nerve blocks, and ultrasound guided injections, just to name a few. Dr. O’Donnell says, “As a physiatrist, my background is in rehabilitation and my goal is to get patients moving and back to a normal, active lifestyle.” A brand new approach to treating back pain is now available at Trinity Spine Center, and that is the use of stem cells for back pain. Dr. J says, “A whole lot of patients will benefit from this new and exciting approach.” He explains, “We

are the only ones in the U.S. doing it like we do it, and we are also the only ones at this time who are FDA compliant.” Working closely with Daniel A. Grande, PhD., the Director of the upand-coming Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Trinity Spine Center, patients who suffer from arthritis, degenerative disk disease, and herniated disks may find relief through Stem Cell Therapy. Stem Cell Therapy is “an intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury.” This exciting new kind of therapy offers the possibility of pain relief, the renewal of tissues and the alleviation of pain. When Back Surgery is Necessary: Choose Trinity Spine Center When surgery is absolutely necessary, patients are in good hands with Drs. Siddiqi and Hayes, as both surgeons are experienced and qualified in performing even the most intricate of spinal surgeries. On staff at the Medical Center of Trinity, both physicians received their Doctorates from the prestigious Cornell University in New York, followed by double fellowships at the Arizona Institute for Minimally

Invasive Spine Surgery and the Maryland Spinal Reconstructive and Scoliosis Surgery Center. Both Dr. Hayes and Dr. Siddiqi are Board Certified in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery and both of them travel nationally teaching endoscopic surgery procedures to other doctors around the country. The Trinity Spine Center offers patients the most comprehensive care by having many different kinds of spine care health professionals on staff and in one place. The Trinity Spine Center’s physicians are committed to working together with each patient to produce the best possible results. Trinity Spine Center is located at 2040 Short Avenue in Odessa, just off of S.R. 54 and just east of Duck Slough Blvd. The Trinity Spine Center is currently taking new patients, and they accept Medicare and most major insurances. The main office can be reached at 727-372-9922 and is open Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The Trinity Spine Wellness Center can be reached at 727-807-3101, and is open Mon. – Fri., 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. to accommodate patients.
