Morton Plant Mease Outpatient Center (Trinity) Breaks Ground on New Surgery Center Morton Plant Mease Outpatient Center (Trinity) recently broke ground on a new project that will expand the BayCare Ambulatory Surgery Center (Trinity) to help meet the future health care needs of the community. The center, which broke ground in October, is scheduled to open in Summer 2014. “We will be adding and upgrading equipment to provide our patients with advanced surgical care,” said Nancy Burden, Director of Ambulatory Surgery for BayCare Health System. “We also are placing an emphasis on convenience and comfort with close parking and high visibility from Mitchell Boulevard so people can easily find us.” The new one-story center will be nearly 15,000 square feet, doubling its capacity. It will have four operating rooms, three procedure rooms, 20 pre-op and post-op beds, and five re-

4

cliner locations for recovery. The center will continue to offer all of the surgical procedures currently available, as well as endoscopy, and pain management procedures. The lobby, which will be decorated in natural tones, is anticipated to accommodate more than 40 patients and visitors. The project architect is Mason Blau, Clearwater, and the contractor is Creative Contractors, Clearwater. Medical Center of Trinity Now Offers Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgical Technology The first anterior approach hip replacement procedure at the Medical Center of Trinity was successfully completed by Orthopedic Surgeon Stephen Hanff, M.D. The Anterior Approach surgery procedure is a technique that minimizes the pain and time from surgery to recovery. The Anterior Approach allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip as opposed to the lateral (side), or the posterior (back) approach. This allows

for a smaller incision – four to five inches as opposed to 10 to 12 inches and a faster recovery time. This way, the hip can be replaced without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery. The surgeon can simply work through the natural interval between the muscles. The most important muscles for hip function, the gluteal muscles that attach to the pelvis and femur, are left undisturbed and therefore do not require a healing process The Anterior Approach is performed on a special table designed specifically for this surgical approach. Celebrate the Holidays with Whole Foods Market Carrollwood As you continue your journey through the holidays, you’re probably starting to plan for Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s get togethers. Much like Thanksgiving, these are difficult events to execute while maintaining a healthy approach. But it is possible, so stick with me to learn some simple ways to keep your weight down during the most indulgent season of the year. First and foremost, find time to exercise. This is the number one activity I find that people cut out. I’ve heard every single excuse in the book, but what it all comes down to is this: your health is worth 30 to 60 minutes a day. The American Heart Association recommends 30 or more minutes of medium intensity activity at least five days a week -- and remember, something is always better than nothing. Second, don’t eat just because there’s food. Hand in hand with this is the idea of eating until you are satisfied, not overstuffed. There are a lot of numbers thrown around when people give advice on how long it takes for your stomach and brain to register

10

about how full you are, but just remember that there is a lag. Eat slowly, eat with purpose and remember to listen closely for your body’s signals. Whole foods with healthy fats can help fill you up and keep you satied like no others. Remember, the lethargy that comes with overconsumption plays directly into my first point, so don’t over eat and then go sit on the couch! Third, offer healthy options for snacking -- and more importantly, opt not to have the other stuff. One of the most common mistakes party hosts make is to offer healthy options, like veggie platters, mixed fruit salads or pick-your-toppings salad bar, but they also have a bowl of chips, some sour cream and onion dip or a platter of chicken wings. Rise above the desire to offer these items and stick with (the often less expensive) healthier treats. If you don’t have the bad stuff around, then you simply cannot eat it. Lastly, do not skip meals to make up for poor eating choices. This is one of the things I hear other people advocating and it makes my heart sink. Often times with the focus on calorie counting comes a desire to skip meals

For Ad Info 727-943-0551 • www.NeighborhoodNewsFL.com

in order to “make up for” overeating at other times of the day. Unfortunately your digestive system does not tell time like your brain. Skipping meals does very little in the way of making up the caloric difference, but it is harmful the next time you sit down to eat (and are positively ravished) and makes it exceptionally hard to control your intake. If you have a “bad meal” don’t take your next meal time off, instead choose some nutrient

tations that taste even better than they look! Gabriella is an Italian native, as was her late husband Nick. The two moved to Florida from Westchester, New York in order to continue their dreams of being surrounded by family and friends while making delicious meals and creating lasting memories. Gabriella says, “We are family owned and like to treat our customers like family. We have customers that have been with us since the beginning. We have been able to see our original guests bring in their own kids and then their grandkids, which is a very rewarding part of owning this restaurant. People feel like home here.” While chatting with Gabriella, I noticed that most every guest to enter Rossi was greeted by name and seemed to have a real relationship with Gabriella and the Rossi team. It was evident that patrons coming in were happy to see the Rossi crew, catch up and eat some delicious fare. Gabriella has been running the business since her husband passed away ten years ago. She works along-

side her sister Manuela in keeping the guests completely happy and satisfied, while her brother, Chef Massimo, brings style and expertise into the kitchen. The Rossi family believes in making every dish to perfect standards and every item that comes out of the kitchen is prepared with a passion for hospitality that Italians are known for. Chef Massimo says, “We have a very extensive menu and are introducing new items. Our restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy an intimate date before a night out or to visit with your friends and family. We accommodate everyone here and it truly is a great meeting spot!” Gabriella treated me to a variety of Rossi’s delicious new specials that Chef Massimo recently created in the kitchen. Rossi Ristorante Italiano is trying out new ideas for specials that include fresh new appetizers and entrées. He only uses the finest of ingredients, from perfectly blended herbs and spices down to the butter and olive oil he chooses. At Rossi’s, customers know that their food is being made with a lot of care behind it and

you can truly taste the love put into each and every dish. Gabriella is extremely kind and hospitable, ensuring that guests are treated with the utmost respect. During our time together, Gabriella and I feasted on some of the delicious new specialties. Chef Massimo first sent out a fabulous new appetizer, Fiocchi. The Fiocchi is pasta that is folded around a mixture of fresh pear and four fresh cheeses including robiola, grano padano, taleggio and ricotta. The gourmet cheeses mixed with pear was both sweet and savory; the perfect amount of both salt and sweet because it was topped with fresh sliced and crisped prosciutto – magnifico! I loved the Veal Saltimbocca alla Romana, which is composed of delicious thin-pounded veal, topped with fresh baby leaf spinach, mozzarella cheese, and a crisp prosciutto that was absolutely mouth-watering! The Veal was served with a delicious Marsala demi glaze; the combination of perfectly salty and crisp prosciutto over the top of tender veal was heavenly as well as unique upon the palette. I was

Another must-try dish that Chef Massimo created is his spectacular Ravioli Galietta with Panko Crusted Shrimp. This ravioli specialty is stuffed to perfection with ricotta cheese and topped with fresh mozzarella and panko breaded shrimp that are fried to crunchy perfection. The garlic, cherry tomato and fresh basil creamy sauce made with white wine sherry was just right, perfectly light and delicious! Everything was so delicious and

Both facilities offer a medically supervised weight loss program for patients. Suncoast Urgent Care also offers high quality

medical care for everything from “Common Colds to Broken Bones.” Board Certified Physicians Peter C. Duic, MD and John P. Opyoke, MD co-developed Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss to offer patients a safe and effective way to lose unhealthy, excess weight. Dr. Duic says, “One of our physicians meets personally with each new client to discuss what their goals are, as well as to discuss how our diet program is designed to enable the patient to lose weight.” The initial workup for weight loss includes a physical, lab work and an EKG. The doctor will go over your medical history in order to best understand your current health and weight loss goals - this information helps to design a program that is individualized based on your personal health needs and weight loss goals. The experienced physicians at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss work with each client to determine whether or not Vitamin B12, a mulitvitamin and/or appetite suppressants will be

included in their program. Dr. Duic states that he always enjoys his first encounter with new clients: “I learn about their hopes and goals, their lifestyle and possible health issues. All of this sheds light on how I can assist that individual, both with diet design, lifestyle modification and, if they choose, vitamins and/or an appetite suppressant. I am confident new clients are starting on a journey from which I have seen countless patients derive great fulfillment.” While each program is unique to each patient, the program revolves around creating a safe and healthy approach to losing weight for each patient, beginning with a low calorie diet and a new understanding of the way that the foods that you eat affect your body. Once the weight starts coming off, usually at a rate of 1–3 pounds per week, patients really get motivated. They can see the fat just melting off, and while they look better, they also feel better. It’s not a one-sizefits-all diet, which is why it’s better. Taking the time to understand each pa-

Additionally, patients have the option to spend one-on-one time with Susan D. Opyoke, RDLD. Susan is a Registered Dietician who is Board Certified and completely committed to each of her patients. Susan has helped hundreds of people since Suncoast Urgent Care (formerly named Trinity Urgent Care) and Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss opened their doors to the community 6 1/2 years ago. Susan says, “One of the aspects of Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss that differentiates us from other programs is that, if a patient chooses to work with me, it is a complimentary part of the program. I meet with clients either in person or on the phone, by appointment, and I am also available by email.

I work with clients to create a personalized diet and we review the aspects of healthy eating. While most people know what is and what isn’t healthy, many people fall into a rut. They for- Susan Opyoke, get to plan their RDLD meals, and they go through fast food lines when eating on the go and not taking any time for themselves. With our program, we work together and discuss how healthier eating can actually work even though our lives are busy. We also work on what to eat and what not to eat in a way that will still allow you to go to parties and live your life.” Susan adds, “For the clients who choose to utilize me, I really like to see them weekly at the beginning, and when they see the weight coming off consistently, the accountability makes sense to them. It’s very fast. What makes us unique and different from other programs is that not only are my services a free component, we also offer a maintenance program completely free. This gives us the opportunity to help you maintain your weight loss, - which for some can be the hardest part.”

With each visit, in addition to looking at how much weight has been lost, clients can expect a health check, an evaluation of their tolerance to any vitamins or suppressants they may be taking, as well as an optional visit with a physician and/or the dietitian. Susan says, “The majority of the patients who come in see significant results and are able to keep the weight off when they follow the program. Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss can work for anyone; it’s really weight loss for everybody, whether you have 15 to 20 pounds to lose, or 60 to 100 pounds to lose.” The New Year is fast approaching, and it is time to make your resolution stick – you can do it at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss where results are proven. Orbit 19 Lounge – Good Vibes, Good Times! By Lenay Ruhl Seated at the bar in the center of a dimly lit Orbit 19 Lounge in Holiday, FL, co-owner Dadia Janevska takes a sip of her favorite drink, Summer’s Long Lost Love. A perfect blend of fresh cucumber, ginger, mint, Hendrick’s Gin and St. Germaine liqueur, the drink represents Dadia’s time in France and how her world travels mixed with her family history of 40 years in the liquor and wine business landed her at Orbit 19. The lounge is connected to Universal Fine Wine and Spirits liquor store, operated by her brother Rob. Dadia JanEvska and Rob JanEvski co-own Orbit 19 Lounge and Univeral Fine Wine and Spirits. The location has won multiple “Best of the Bay” awards from Creative Loafing and rightly so, with 250 different types of liquor. If they don’t have what you want, they’ll bring it over from next door. They also have 19 different beers on tap. For those who don’t drink alcohol, there are

cappuccinos and espresso. The lounge has something for everyone––music to live comedians, specials and events every night, burlesque shows and themed parties throughout the year. The age group of the patrons ranges from 21 to about 65 years old. Dadia’s passion is music, fashion, food, and most of all...cocktails! “We cater to anything from DJs to bands,” said Dadia. They have DJs and VJs during the week and live bands on Friday nights. “I like to find new up-andcoming bands,” said Dadia. “We take pride in not only bringing in the best local talent, but national acts.” Some noteworthy bands that have played at Orbit 19 are: a national surf rock group that formed in Auburn, AL called Man Or Astro-Man?; an American indie/neo-psych band called Sons of Hippies from Sarasota; surf/rock band Beach Day from Hollywood, FL; Clearwater’s The Stick Martin Show; a rockabilly band, the Psycho Devilles, from Atlanta, GA; and a western swing band called the Cadillac Bombers from New Port

Richey, amongst others. “The music ranges from ska to punk to rock n roll to surf… electric… it varies,” said Dadia. She continues on, “blues, rockabilly, soul and funk.” They have nationally known DJs as well, including DJ Jask, DJ Three and DJ Monk. Dadia points out the entertainment in the room, complete with a pool table, darts, pinball machine and foosball. The bar is complete with a jukebox that looks like a giant iPod where people can pick songs from iTunes. There is one thing missing from the music selection. “No country or heavy metal,” said Dadia. “Because

it just distorts the vibe.” Orbit 19 Specials The lounge has specials every night. Mondays are open mic with Stick Martin and $2 import drafts. Wednesday they have Soul House Radio with DJ Lyndon and $3 premium vodka drinks. Thursday is Vintage Youth with VJ Jason Barco playing music videos and $2 kraft beers. “I spelled kraft with a “K”… that’s just kinda our quirkiness,” said Dadia. Saturdays they are starting “SO WHAT CHA WANT?” with DJ Fader playing old school hip hop and mash up, featuring $3 rum cocktails.

Holiday Entertainment Orbit 19 has a lot of events planned for the month of December and the upcoming holidays. The SuperVillains, a reggae band from Orlando, are playing on Thanksgiving Eve. The Stick Martin Show featuring the full band kicks off the first Friday of December on the 6th, followed by Shoeless Soul, a jazzy, reggae band from Dunedin, FL on Friday, December 13th. They are calling the events “Shout it Out With GLEE!” – a special Holiday Karaoke series with KJ Rick Conti. Seasonal winter ales will be available on tap. Complimentary wasabi peanuts and organic hickory-smoked almonds are served upon request. As far as shots, there are many unique and fun blends such as the bottle rocket, a tall citrus shot garnished with an orange. “We garnish almost everything we have,” said Dadia. Universal Fine Wine & Spirits and the attached Orbit 19 lounge are open 365 days a year no matter what. “We never close down; if there’s a hurricane, tropical storm, you name it WE ARE ALWAYS OPEN!” said Dadia. cover but usually only when there is a big name act playing and sometimes...not even then. Dadia has high hopes for 2014 including an organic tapas menu and an outdoor area with more beer choices. “It’s not your typical lounge next to a liquor store,” said Dadia. “It’s the best kept secret!” Orbit 19 is located at 1542 US 19 N in Holiday. Suncoast Arts Fest Brings Fine Art to Wesley Chapel By Dara Tucker The Suncoast Arts Fest at The Shops at Wiregrass keeps getting better with each passing year. For the past eight years, the Suncoast Arts Fest (SAF) has brought together quality artists and art lovers from Pasco, Hillsborough, and Pinellas Counties. It takes place in the heart of the Tampa Bay area, convenient to major interstates, at the Shops at Wiregrass on January 18 and 19, 2014. The show is held at the peak of the tourist season in Tampa Bay and traveling artists are encouraged to combine this show with other state shows in warm, sunny Florida. The Suncoast Arts Fest is a great way to spend the weekend, with up to 130 juried visual artists and craftsman lining up along the main street in Wiregrass, and musical entertainment is set up in the Center Court. There is also an interactive art area, the fresh works of emerging youth artists on display, and chalk artists showcase their work on the sidewalks – all taking place dur-

Previously SAF funds were used to promote elementary school art where there have been cuts due to lack of funding in Pasco County. “Our goal is to raise money for scholarships. We’ve built a website that serves as a streamlined resource for youth striving to pursue a career in the arts fields,” explains Pam Marron. WJQB 106.3 FM has joined the event to promote arts across Pasco County. An Interactive Arts Area promotes visual art for children by exposing them to hands-on art activities. Sand art is an example of one of the activities available for the children to create. Select tenth through twelfth graders from Pasco County schools will also have their art displayed in the Emerging Artist Area. In addition to the fine arts show in Wesley Chapel at The Shops at Wiregrass, other organizations such as Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art in Tarpon Springs, Pasco Arts Council, The West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, PHCC Alric Pottberg Gallery at the

All proceeds benefit “Arts for Kids” by way of a grant created by the parent nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization known as the Fine Arts of the Suncoast, Inc. And the Crowd Goes Wild for Schrader’s Little Cooperstown By Julie Kanehl Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, “Shoeless Joe,” Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio––Take me out to the ballgame! In 2010, we wrote a story about a local resident who had turned an entire wing of his home into an amazing shrine to baseball, sports and celebrity memorabilia. When we first met Dennis “The Menace” Schrader, and his lovely wife Mary (who is quite possibly the bigger baseball fan), they gave us a private tour of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, which at the time was a collection of 4,000 autographed baseballs, beautifully displayed and protected in a 12’ x 14’ bedroom in their home that had been renovated into a vault so secure, that it was reminiscent of James Bond or Mission Impossible. Offering private tours to people of all ages who heard about his collection, Dennis said, “The beautiful thing about this collection is sharing it,” of course, at that time, it meant giving tours into his own home, sometimes two or three times a day! Calling it a collection isn’t quite the right word. This Largo High School Hall of Famer (for basketball) owns the

34

largest privately owned autographed baseball collection in the entire world. His collection’s popularity has gone worldwide, earned a coveted Guinness Book of World Records Certificate, and found a new home at the St. Petersburg Museum of History, where Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is on loan for the next twenty years. Yes, I said twenty years, and that’s because a collection like this deserves to be shared and enjoyed by everyone who has a love for the sport. The Grand Opening of Schrader’s Little Cooperstown opened to much deserved fanfare in October, and now baseball fans of all ages can come and experience this incredible and historic exhibit. Created to make you feel like you’ve walked into a sports almanac, this beautiful exhibit is a living representation of the growth and change that baseball has left on history, and there are balls that represent players young and old, both Hall of Famer and Rookie, from the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Tampa Bay Rays, and every team in between. A Home Run Ticket! It all started with Mickey Mantle, who used to come down here for

Spring Training, and a nine-year-old Largo native getting his first autographed ball. It was the love of baseball passed down from a father to his son, and a passion that grew from there. For Dennis, it became autographed balls in shoeboxes and Rubbermaid containers. As the years went by, they were stashed under beds and in the attic, and as Dennis’ collection grew and grew, he was just hoping to have a place in his house so that he could enjoy them. As collectors, Dennis and Mary have collected a good deal of these balls personally, and have witnessed them being signed. Mary, who is Dennis & Mary pose in front of the known for always having a baseball Schrader’s Little Cooperstown exhibit at and a pen handy, said, “We’ve had at the St. Petersburg Museum of History least a thousand of these balls autographed in our presence.” he was looking for, he went over to Every autographed ball has a story, Myers, tapped him on the shoulder and and each one has come to the exhibit said, “Sign this for Mary, she’s good in its own way. For example, one day people.” Mary was trying to catch the eye of As for how the rest were obtained, Rookie of the Year, Wil Myers, who Dennis would write a letter to retired was having a conversation in the players and even celebrities asking them dugout with Coach Joe Madden, and if they’d sign a ball. This letter writing Evan Longoria said, “What do you became a passion for him, as it was a need, Mary?” When he realized what real way to connect to the people in

baseball’s history. He would ask them nicely and tell them how he had a private collection that wasn’t for sale, and would they mind signing if he sent them a ball. How’s that for a lesson in the importance of letter writing? He’s received hundreds and hundreds of balls for his collection that way. Sometimes he would get autographed pictures as well. It was in this same way that collected 170 baseballs from the men in the Negro League, and obtained 160 autographed balls from the women who played baseball while the boys were a war in the AAGPBL. He has also been fortunate enough to receive contributions from star players who have been informed of this amazing exhibit. He’s also received others through online auctions. One of Dennis’ favorite balls, if he could narrow it down, would probably be the one that was generated when they opened the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. There was 26 members inducted that day, but only eleven players were still alive at the time. He has a baseball signed by all eleven along with the original ticket admitting one to the opening ceremony on June 12th, 1939. Seeing that ball is worth the trip right there. There are also a lot of baseballs that are signed by celebrities outside

Trinity Area Neighborhood News

the realm of baseball, which makes the exhibit fun for everyone. From Elvis Presley to a ball signed by Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio when they were married, to Arnold Palmer, Bob Barker, Chubby Checker, Fats Domino, Martin Sheen, Randy Travis, Thomas Kinkade (who autographed his ball and added his signature lamppost insignia), Henry Winkler, Regis Philbin, and Betty White, just to name a few. How One Man’s Passion Became a Grand Slam! Once the word got out, people would come from all over the world to see the Schrader’s collection of baseballs. They’d stand in the Schrader’s house and just go from ball to ball in awe and wonder, remembering players, and discussing stats. Eventually the right people came, people like local legend and philanthropist, Gus Stavros, who absolutely loved it, and thought that it belonged in a place where everyone could enjoy it. Dennis says, “The next thing you know, the Mayor of St. Petersburg and all of his friends showed up at my house and said, ‘This has got to be in St. Pete!’” Over the next two years, the entire community came together to raise the

$250,000 necessary to make the museum into what it is today, and it’s a wonder to behold. You don’t have to have season tickets to appreciate the love that has gone into this exhibit. Whether they visited Schrader’s Little Cooperstown when it was at Dennis and Mary’s house, or in its newfound home in St. Petersburg have been impressed with the amount of knowledge, love, and effort that have gone into it. Far more than a bunch of old baseballs, Little Cooperstown is one of St. Petersburg’s newest treasures. Dennis told me that even, Bill Rasmussen, founder and CEO of ESPN Sports said it was the, “Greatest baseball collection I’ve ever seen,” after visiting. What makes the collection complete are the people who come to visit the museum who watched these people play, who knew that player at another time. It’s the kids’ faces when they think about just how long baseball players have been coming to our state. It’s the group of Little League kids who dream of writing their name on a ball for the museum someday. It’s the Rotary Club members who come in by bus, and even use walkers and glasses to find their favorite players, but who float out on a cloud nine made of happy memories. Who knows how many baseballs Schrader’s Little Cooperstown will have in 20 years, but one thing is for sure, and that is that baseball is more than a game––for those who love this sport, baseball is everything that is good and wholesome about being a kid. It is what being an All-American is really about. It’s about rounding the bases, catching the fly, and getting nose-tonose with that ump, even if it’s only in your imagination. Baseball has captivated the hearts of boys and girls in our community for a century. Next year St. Petersburg will be celebrating their centennial anniversary of hosting Spring Training teams. In a peanut-

shell, baseball is an integral part of who we are, and now we’ve got a chance to get up close, and in a way, personal, to some of those people that made the sport so great. The St. Petersburg Museum of History is located at 335 Second Ave. N.E., and is an amazing destination in itself, featuring, of course, Schrader’s Little Cooperstown, as well as other interesting installations that shouldn’t be missed. If you’re a baseball fan, you’ve absolutely got to get down here and check this out. In fact, if you’re looking for something fun to do with your family and friends this holiday season, this exhibit is something that everyone can enjoy, and it’s just a short walk away from restaurants, shopping and more. Schrader’s Little Cooperstown is located in the St. Petersburg Museum of History on 335 Second Avenue N.E. in St. Petersburg. Hours are Tues. – Sat., 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and 1 p.m.–5 p.m. on Sun.; closed Mon. General admission to the museum is $15, Senior Citizens over the age of 60 are $12, students with ID are $9, and children are $9. Children under 6 are free. To reach the museum, call 727-894-1052 or visit their website at www.spmoh.com. You can also visit Dennis Schrader’s website at www.littlecooperstown.com.

The Trinity Spine Center Offers a Conservative Approach to Patient Care By Julie Kanehl If you’ve ever been injured in an accident, fallen, or simply had an injury because of work or play, you know how back pain can change the quality of your life in one fell swoop. The Trinity Spine Center is staffed by some of the most respected physicians and doctors in their field and their whole-patient, conservative approach to treatment yields positive results. Trinity Spine Center’s doctors are truly committed to taking the time that is necessary with each of their patients, and making sure that each patient gets the personalized medical attention that they deserve. Victor Hayes, MD, and Farhan Siddiqi, MD, both highly-esteemed spine surgeons in the area, are the cofounders of The Trinity Spine Center. Trinity Spine Center opened in 2006 on Hawbuck Street, and then in 2009, moved to its brand new 21,000square-foot, state-of-the-art facility at 2040 Short Avenue in Odessa, just off

of S.R. 54. The physicians at Trinity Spine Center treat patients who suffer with any kind of back, neck or spine pain, and have already successfully treated more than 15,000 patients. Their goal is to offer a variety of modalities for back pain under one roof, increasing patient care and improving on the communication that can be lost when patients traditionally see multiple doctors who do not work together. Whether you need chiropractic care or spinal surgery, it is all under one roof at the Trinity Spine Center. The Trinity Spine Center is very unique in its approach, and is at the forefront of stem cell research to reduce back pain. As a result, Trinity Spine Center draws patients from all over the state and the nation. It’s no surprise, because patients there have the opportunity to meet with surgeons and receive diagnostic testing, as well as receive chiropractic care, attend physical therapy and even receive pain management care all in one place, at

patient care is the communication that we have with one another. We are never more than a phone call away and patients see that and really appreciate it.” Dr. J’s approach to wellness, exercise and nutrition is an inspiration to many patients at The Trinity Spine Center, and he encourages patients to realize that no matter their age, size or condition, regular exercise will contribute to their overall health and wellbeing. The Trinity Spine Wellness Center offers patients the least invasive approach to spine care including physical therapy, chiropractic care, decompression therapy and even nutritional services. Dr. Ronald F. Stacey II, DC, is a Board Certified Chiropractor, and has been with Trinity Spine Center since 2009. He says, “We have an array of specialties under one roof, and we can start conservatively and move each patient up to the next option if it’s necessary.” He adds, “It avoids having to have each patient see a chiropractor at one place, a primary at another, and so on. Here we can provide a plan of [total spinal] care.” Dr. Nathan A. Possert graduated from East Lake High School before honorably serving in the U.S. Navy

for 4 years in which he was Quarter master and a search and rescue swimmer. After serving in the Navy, he graduated with honors from St. Petersburg College in Tarpon Springs in 2004 and then transferred to the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa where he earned a Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training and graduated with honors in 2006. While attending graduate school, Dr. Possert was able to work with high school athletes part time in Pinellas County as an Athletic Trainer for two years. Since graduating with his Doctorate, Dr. Possert has worked in the outpatient facility setting full time and in the hospital setting part time. If pain management is necessary, patients are in good hands. Pain management is used carefully and responsibly at Trinity Spine Center. Dr. Casey J. O’Donnell, FAAPMR DABPM, specializes in the treatment of spasticity and dystonia, electromyography, and pain management. He utilizes an array of diagnostic tools to view the tissues in the body in order to see how the nerves in the body are functioning, and then he can perform procedures such as trigger point injections, nerve blocks, and ultrasound guided injections, just to name a few.

Dr. Ronald Stacey II

Dr. O’Donnell says, “As a physiatrist, my background is in rehabilitation and my goal is to get patients moving and back to a normal, active lifestyle.” A brand new approach to treating back pain is now available at Trinity Spine Center, and that is the use of stem cells for back pain. Dr. J says, “A whole lot of patients will benefit from this new and exciting approach.” He explains, “We are the only ones in the U.S. doing it like we do it, and we are also the only ones at this time who are FDA compliant.” Working closely with Daniel A. Grande, PhD., the Director of the upand-coming Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Trinity Spine Center, patients who suffer from arthritis, degenerative disk disease, and herniated disks may find relief through Stem Cell Therapy. Stem Cell Therapy is “an intervention strategy that introduces new adult stem cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury.” This exciting new kind of therapy offers the possibility of pain relief, the renewal of tissues and the alleviation of pain. When Back Surgery is Necessary: Choose Trinity Spine Center When surgery is absolutely necessary, patients are in good hands with Drs. spinal surgeries. On staff at the Medical Center of Trinity, both physicians received their Doctorates from the prestigious Cornell University in New York, followed by double fellowships at the Arizona Institute for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and the Maryland Spinal Reconstructive and Scoliosis Surgery Center. Both Dr. Hayes and Dr. Siddiqi are Board Certified in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery and both of them travel nationally teaching endoscopic surgery procedures to other doctors around the country. The Trinity Spine Center offers patients the most comprehensive care by having many different kinds of spine care health professionals on staff and in one place. The Trinity Spine Center’s physicians are committed to working together with each patient to produce the best possible results. Trinity Spine Center is located at 2040 Short Avenue in Odessa, just off of S.R. 54 and just east of Duck Slough Blvd. The Trinity Spine Center is currently taking new patients, and they accept Medicare and most major insurances. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: REALITIES By Dr. Wayne Adams, Former Dean and Full Professor of a Graduate School of Business About now, parents throughout Florida are waking up to some hard realties about the SAT and ACT Examinations. As correctly predicted in the Tampa Bay Times article last April, the dramatic increases in the minimum qualifying SAT and ACT scores for these scholarships are eliminating 50% - 75% of students for 2014 who would have been eligible if they had graduated in 2013. Most of the damage has been done in the Florida Medallion Scholars level, where the minimum eligibility thresholds have been increased on the SAT from 1070 to 1170, and on the ACT from 22 to 26. The new requirements for the Florida Medallion Scholars on the SAT increased from 1270 to 1280, and on the ACT from 28 to 29. For the past three years, the reality is that Florida students have continually ranked around 45th in the key category of student performance on the SAT and ACT compared to

42

other states. Our school programs are clearly not working to improve scores against this national standard, which cannot be influenced by local or state politics. Yet these scores continue to be vital for college admissions and scholarships. The positive reality is that our students can dramatically improve their SAT and ACT scores with focused, concentrated help. Improvement is like helping a student climb as high as possible on the part of their educational iceburg that towers out of the water. Learning strategies, specific test taking techniques, and working with my proprietary study guides consistently help students climb as high as they can. I cannot help broaden or deepen their academic foundation which it the eightninths under water. But I do help them do their best with where they are. My students normally improve 200 – 300 points on their combined

When any parent looks at the “before and after” essays, they are amazed. These students have been admitted to Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, University of Chicago, Boston College, USC, UCLA, LSU, Berkley School of Music, UF, USF, UCF, Stetson, U Miami, New College of Florida, and many other outstanding colleges and universities. Many have received academic, athletic, and music scholarships. For seniors, increasing your score for Bright Futures and getting across the threshhold of SAT or ACT levels for your desired college can still be accomplished. For Juniors and Sophomores, there is no better

time to start preparing because practice and knowing what to do can greatly improve your scores, plus you can “cherry pick” your best score from different examinations, submit them, and colleges do not know they came from multiple examinations. Since these exams are graded on a curve, often students can score higher in the Winter and Spring when the number and quality of those taking the exams are lower. If you would like to talk more about how I can help your student, please contact me at 727253-0639 or wwa0811@gmail.com. Help Put Money Back in the Hands of Hardworking Pasco Residents! The United Way of Pasco County Prosperity Campaign helps residents in our community by providing a muchneeded tax return preparation service that’s completely free, individualized and has no strings attached, and we need your help! This valuable, volunteer-driven program exists as a partnership between the IRS VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, AARP Foundation’s TaxAide, United Way of Pasco County, and local financial institutions and business partners. For many Pasco residents, receiving their tax refund can mean the difference between deciding to buy groceries or keep the lights on. Since 2004, the IRS-Certified Prosperity Campaign volunteers have prepared income tax returns for thousands of low-to-moderate income residents at no cost and last year alone this resulted in more than $1.5 million saved on paid returns! In addition, the program volunteers emphasize vital tax credits that are regularly overlooked, such as unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Care and

44

Elderly Tax Credits, and go unclaimed every year. There are several different volunteer roles to choose from, and the good news is that you don’t have to be a math whiz and no experience is necessary. Volunteers receive full, comprehensive IRS training and become certified to prepare simple returns. Other rewarding volunteer opportunities include Greeters, Site Volunteer Schedulers, and Technology/Computer Set-Up Assistance at the various sites. Full descriptions of these volunteer positions can be found on the United Way of Pasco County website, http://unitedwaypasco.org or at the Virtual Volunteer Resource Center, www.uwvolunteers.org.

The time commitment is minimal, but the satisfaction and personal reward is great! Taxpayers tell us year after year about the difference the free service makes in their lives. People like Robin, a single mother, who shared that she and her children wait until February to celebrate Christmas when they get their return because she, “needs every penny of the [tax] refund.” In 2013, volunteers filed more than 7,700 returns bringing more than $8 million in refunds to local Pasco residents and more than $1.8 million in EITC refunds alone! The average income of the taxpayers was just $24,694, which means that the EITC and other tax credits, combined with the free tax return preparation service, make a meaningful impact in the households of thousands of residents. Join in the Fun at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club By Julie Kanehl Did you know that Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, located at 3535 Trophy Boulevard in New Port Richey, is open to the public? It is! You can bring your family to dine in their gorgeous dining room, or you can pay to play their beautifully manicured golf courses! That said, have you ever thought about joining a country club? A membership offers a myriad of benefits, from unlimited access to golf and tennis courts, to amenities like heated Olympic-sized pools, the clubhouse, saunas, and an endless amount of activities to participate in. The dining is exquisite, offering everything from casual fun-food to Sunday brunches and Prime Rib nights. It’s an absolutely wonderful experience to be a part of a country club, and Seven Springs Golf and Country Club (SSGCC) is a place where the whole family can benefit. With activities for ages 3-103, and affordable new memberships to fit everyone’s budget, there’s never been a better time to join.

46

The Seven Springs Golf and Country Club is a part of our local history. While the club itself has served members for three decades, SSGCC has a history that goes back as far as the early 1900s when a young couple, Sam and Elizabeth Stevenson, believed that the mineral springs had health benefits. They diverted the water from the springs into a pool and created a bit of a resort around it. As a result, many people came to our area for rest, recuperation and relaxation. An old school house was built on the property in 1913, which has its own history and has since been moved, but the lesson left behind is that the rest of Pasco County has literally grown up around it. The entrance to SSGCC has a historical marker that reminds us that the springs have been a destination for over a hundred years. Today SSGCC continues in that vein by being a destination for people of all ages who want to have a premier, exclusive experience that provides safety, community and a whole lot of fun to its members. Whether you like the idea of slip-

Whether you’re joining for the adult activities or to give your children the experience of growing up playing and learning at the club, or are simply interested in the unlimited golf, there’s always something great happening. From “Aquacise” classes in the pool to tennis on the courts, to playing Bocci Ball and

Wendi McAnn, Club House Manager, says, “I see our club as a destination for the people in our community. And our dining options are amazing, from bar food to fine dining, tapas and wine diners. Our club offers a sense of community that is unique.” The dining at SSGCC is a reason to join the club in itself. When you come in to dine at the club, whether you’re alone or you’re with your family, you are welcome. You’re greeted by name and you know those around you, or you will soon. It’s one of those rare places where you talk to the people at the table next to you, give a wave at the people walking by – in a sense it’s like going back in time to a safer, happier place. Of all the benefits that are offered in a SSGCC membership, the one that really speaks to me is the sense of peace, the true feeling of belonging and the camaraderie that comes with it. Fun is Par for the Course You don’t have to be a member to play golf at Seven Springs Golf and Country Club, as the courses are open to the public, and affordable too! Of course, membership has its benefits, one of them being unlimited golf! Golf is a unique sport in that it’s you against you, and the game is always changing. Not because the course changes, but because you do. The slightest change in your swing, or the tilt of your hand, or a bird in the air, can alter your game. It’s been a game that has both challenged and delighted people for generations, and it’s never too late to learn the game, pick up

Random Acts of Flowers is Recycling Flowers & Delivering Smiles! Dawn LaCross has dedicated much of her time to helping others and after serving at more than 40 local charity organizations over the past 16 years, she had a desire to bring to the community a non-profit organization that would create a positive impact for people, while also promoting recycling. After seeing a video featuring Random Acts of Flowers (RAF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that began in Knoxville, TN with the mission to improve mental health through the power of giving flowers, Dawn knew she was on to something good. Dawn says, “Once I saw the video, I tracked down the founder. We have the largest hospice in the entire world right here and more ALFs (assisted living facilities) and nursing homes per capita than anywhere in the nation – we need this!” Even though Random Acts of Flowers Pinellas is new to our area, their dynamic team of volunteers, are already making a difference! “Our mission is fulfilled over and over again within a 24-48 hour period after we receive flowers,” explains

Dawn. “We never take in anything and send it out the same way. We take in the flower donations and set up a triage area, where the dead and dying flowers are composted and the rest are freshly cut and put into arrangements with fresh minerals.” I found out about this unique, green charity when I met RAF Pinellas Advisory Board President, Pam Ora at MacKinnon Jewelers in Trinity. Tom MacKinnon and jewelry designer Phillip Gavriel donated a portion of proceeds from the Phillip Gavriel trunk show (held December 5th) to RAF Pinellas. Local businesses like MacKinnon Jewelers and Synovus Bank, who donated the van’s wrap as part of a signature sponsorship, have paved the way for other organizations to make a meaningful contribution and involve their employees who also enjoy serving this heartwarming mission. RAF Pinellas volunteers collect donated flowers from weddings, memorial services, wholesale florists, grocery stores and churches, and even from individuals who have used flow-

“Auto Technologies” Continued from page 1 years of automotive experience to the table. When you combine that with their family-friendly, straightforward approach to car care, Auto Technologies is an excellent choice. Many customers remember Carmen from when he worked at Ferman Chrysler Jeep and Dodge. Originally from New Jersey, Carmen has been working in the industry for almost twenty years, working in a variety of departments, from parts to service, and even managing large franchise tire and service centers. Together with his wife, Shelly, who has experience in the field as well, their goal was to create an exemplary auto shop that didn’t exactly “feel” like one. Carmen says, “We’re different in that we offer a pure family experience.” To truly get the picture, please note that he says this with his 2-½year-old daughter Isabell on his lap, happily typing away, while Carmen Jr. offers customers water and coffee. Auto Technologies is really that kind of place, and the customers will tell you that it’s both the friendly customer service and the superior service

done to their cars that keeps them coming back. Customer Rob Fulton said, “I have been there twice. Once for frozen driveshaft U-joints and…for a complete rear brake job and a transmission flush. Mike Nazzario (Service Manager) is very friendly and reasonable. It has been a long time since I have felt comfortable in taking my Jeep Wrangler or any vehicle somewhere. It is a great feeling that I can drive away and not have to worry about going back for incomplete work. I would definitely recommend them.” Auto Technologies has five fulltime employees, one of which is the aforementioned Mike Nazzario. Nazzario brings years of both technical and management experience to the table, as he owned his own shop in

New Jersey for many years. Sean Grundset, the Lead Mechanic on staff, is known for basically being able to fix anything, and the rest of the staff all work hard to make sure that each job is done thoroughly, from your basic oil change to more complicated fixes. Fixing all makes and models, Auto Technologies is open six days a week to make it convenient for their customers to get back on the road when they need to be. Carmen says, “We are very focused on the continued education that is necessary to stay competitive in our market.”

that covers parts and labor for 24 months or 24,000 miles. A+ Certified with The Better Business Bureau, Auto Technologies honors competitors’ coupons and proudly offers a “Free Second Opinion” policy to people who are unsure about a quote given to them by another auto repair facility. Carmen says, “We are very price competitive and we work with people as best as we can.” He explains that sometimes it’s the simple things that they can do to go the extra mile. Sometimes they have a customer who needs some extra help, so they will do what they can for them, whether that means taking them home, or delivering their car. It’s that kind of personal attention that sets them apart from the competition. For those who need financing, Auto Technologies makes it easy by

“Barkdoll Massage” Continued from page 1 a wonderful environment for massage. She also takes the time to really speak to her clients before their massage to learn more about them so that she can create the best personalized massage experience. Lindsey from New Port Richey says, “If you are looking for the best massage, then look no further than Karla, she is a rare find. Once you have a massage from Karla, you will look no further, that I will guarantee!” Massage Services that Improve Your Life “Your Health is your Wealth” is the philosophy at Barkdoll Massage Therapy, and that is why Karla takes the time to really find out what kind of massage you prefer, whether it’s a Swedish massage or a deep tissue treatment for chronic pain, Karla’s massage will make a difference in your life. Karla offers a wide range of affordable massage therapy styles and packages. If you are looking for a traditional massage, Swedish massage treatments are designed to improve circulation, reduce stress and to relieve muscle tension. This massage is very

58

popular all over the world because of its light, long, and slow strokes that relax your cares and worries away. If you are interested in trying something a little different, hot stone massages use something called warm stone therapy, which is the art of using heated stones in combination with a Swedish massage. According to Karla, the warm stones dissolve muscle tension and induce a deep relaxation. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic treatment designed to ease the pain and discomfort associated with chronic pain. Karla says, “During deep tissue massages I use trigger points to specifically find the places where the work needs to be done.” Deep tissue massages can help people who live with painful conditions live a fuller life. Another style of massage that Karla offers is sports massage and injury rehabilitation. This style of massage combines the benefits and style of a deep tissue massage with stretching, which can improve the range of motion in joints. Whether you are healing after a car accident or are suffering from chronic pain associated with a medical condition, this kind of massage can be extremely beneficial. One of Karla’s clients from Trinity recently said, “I have had the pleasure of having Karla as a massage therapist

for the past six years and it has always been an enriching and healing experience. She is knowledgeable, professional and a kind-hearted person and I have no hesitation in recommending her service. She has hands of gold!” Prenatal massages are a fantastic way to pamper the mom-to-be while easing some of the side effects of pregnancy. Karla uses specially designed massage table pillows that create a comfortable position just for her during this time, so that pregnant moms can safely enjoy their massage. Aromatherapy is proven to aid in relaxation, which is why Barkdoll Massage Therapy offers a variety of essential oils and scents that can be used in collaboration with any other style of massage. Most often used with a Swedish massage, aromatherapy oils are applied by Karla during your massage to enhance the massage experience. One local couple recently wrote, “We all have very busy schedules and it saves us time and stress to have Karla come right to our home. My husband has chronic pain and her weekly massages help him tremendously. Whether you just want a great stress reliever or you have a medical condition I would highly recommend Karla!”

If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve morale at work, how about offering your employees a corporate seated massage? This is a fully clothed, seated massage that can be done right at the office. This style of massage focuses on the back, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms and hands. What a great way to let your employees know how much you care about them! My Massage with Karla I am a huge fan of massages. I go every chance I get, but to be honest, that isn’t very often. When I’m not busy with my family or writing for the Neighborhood News, I’m like most moms and am usually concerned with everyone else’s comfort over my own. That’s why I was so excited to be given the chance to experience one of Karla’s massages by the staff at Neighborhood News. (Thanks Jim!) Scheduling my massage turned out to be a breeze because Barkdoll Massage Therapy is one of the only places that offers evening massage appointments. It was all very easy for me since I wasn’t going to have to worry about driving anywhere or a babysitter for the kids! On the evening of my massage appointment, I simply picked out a quiet room in the house, sent the kids outside to play with my hubby,

and got ready to enjoy my massage. Karla arrived right on time and brought everything she needed with her. A true professional, Karla even wears a clinical massage uniform. Within just a few minutes Karla had set up the massage table and was set up and ready to go. I was really impressed with how quickly the room I had picked had been transformed. Before we started she spoke to me about what kind of massage treatment I wanted, and she asked if I had any injuries that she needed to be aware of. We decided on a combination Swedish and deep tissue massage. She also offered me many different aromatherapy options from rose oil to eucalyptus. I felt totally at ease, and while she stepped out of the room, I comfortably got onto the massage table and got settled. When Karla came back in a moment later, she put on what I like to call “massage music,” and spoke to me about what she was going to do before she began. To my surprise, I was even more relaxed because I was at home. I enjoyed the entire hour instead of wondering how many minutes had passed, or wondering about the kids. I felt safe, pampered and well cared for. After my massage, I felt like a softened stick of butter, and I was able to just put on my slippers instead of my

shoes! This was an incredibly cool experience that made me feel more centered, and really changed my outlook. I felt great for days and my entire family could see what a difference it made for me both physically and emotionally. I can see that a massage with Karla would be a great gift, which is why I’m so happy that she offers gift certificates, but one of the best parts about Barkdoll Massage Therapy is how affordable it is. I might not have to wait for a special occasion because her pricing is competitive and affordable enough to fit into anyone’s budget on a regular basis. From now on, I’m going to take better care of myself, and that includes having massage treatments from Barkdoll Massage Therapy on a regular basis. See you in a few weeks Karla! Barkdoll Massage Therapy is an entirely mobile massage therapy business that comes to you. Karla Barkdoll (License # MA47546) is available 7 days a week from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or to request more information about massage packages, corporate events or gift certificates, call (727) 372-6389 or email Karla at barkdollmassagetherapy@yahoo.com.
