The Yard Milkshake Bar - Serving Up Big Scoops and Big Smiles! By Joy Bergman Back in the day, if you enjoyed your milkshake, you would shake your bartender’s hand as a sign of satisfaction. This is where the word “shake” in milkshake comes from. And at the all-new The Yard Milkshake Bar in Carrollwood, you can bet that you’ll be shaking the staff’s hands up and down once you try one of their delectable milkshakes – that is, assuming you can balance a pint of creamy goodness in one hand! Founders Logan and Chelsea Green first launched The Yard back in 2017, and quickly found much success. They even attracted attention from the notorious sharks on Shark Tank, and were soon invited

to be on the show. People from around the country enjoyed watching the up-and-coming franchise take flight, including single mom Carolina Maria. She and her three kids “loved the [Yard] concept because it’s a totally different concept,” she shared. With the encouragement from her children, her go-getter attitude, and of course, her love for ice cream, Carolina decided to apply for a franchise in Carrollwood. After much hard work and dedication, Carolina proudly opened The Yard Milkshake Bar off of Dale Mabry in October 2021. Though the milkshake bar might be new, the specialty shakes draw customers from

“We are the anti-gym. We do not want to be lopped in with the big box gyms because we’re not. We’re health and fitness studios. It’s always one-on-one, and everything is by appointment. Clients move weights very slowly to force their muscles to do the work versus momentum and gravity; therefore, it is much safer than traditional strength training. So safe that doctors refer their patients because they know we will take good care of them,” explained Virginia. “We chose Carrollwood because it’s a beautiful area with a lot of people, the right demographics for what we do.”

Heartfelt Words For February February is full of history, romance, and heart-shaped everything. Oh yes, love is in the air! But so is COVID-19. A couple of years into the pandemic, the evidence is clear. The virus is transmitted predominantly through the air.

Celebrated every February since 1976, Black History Month’s theme for 2022 conveniently focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. Health and Wellness include not only one’s physical body but also emotional and mental health.

Focusing on our health has never been more critical. And being that February is a month dedicated to affairs of the heart, let me get straight to the point. Heart disease is still the No.1 killer of Americans. And people with poor cardiovascular health are at increased risk of severe illness and death from COVID-19 and its variants.

I have learned in my 36 years of life, with several of them battling a couple of autoimmune diseases, that as long as you have good health and the love and support of your family, everything else that life throws you, you can endure.

Through my editorials, I like to encourage positive thinking and promote healthier ways of living, not just during the pandemic, but as a consistent part of our lives. The good news is that heart disease is preventable in most cases with smarter lifestyle choices. Some of them include: • Not smoking. • Maintaining a healthy weight. • Controlling blood sugar and cholesterol. • Treating high blood pressure. • Getting at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per day. • Getting regular health checkups.

Please drink more water — This is a self-reminder and a reminder to all of my readers. Are you experiencing headaches or muscle cramping? You could be dehydrated. Most of us do not drink enough fluids—which is extremely important if we consider that the human body is made up of 60% water! So let’s stay hydrated in Tampa Bay! In the still overhanging shadows of this confusing pandemic, we should all do our part to share helpful resources and valuable information that can positively impact the overall health of our local community. Let’s continue to make wise and healthy choices for ourselves and our loved ones. Until next time,

The Yard

- story continued from page 1 throughout the area; some from even across the state! As Bryan I. From Jupiter says, “If you are serious about milkshakes, there is not even a competition between choosing this place versus anything,” he comments. “A manager told us they not only use Hershey’s ice cream, but they are specific in using local add-ons...” And it’s true. In addition to using top-notch Hershey’s Premium ice cream, The Yard also uses specialty toppings from local businesses where needed, such as their stunning Key Lime Pie. But most toppings, including The Yard’s exquisite mermaid tail, various cookies, and their delicious chocolate dipped cones, are all made in-house. And it’s these intricate details that really are the icing on the “shake.” As Elite reviewer Drea says, “[This is] the best ice cream I’ve had since I moved to Tampa. There was a line, but it was worth the wait!! The creative finishing of each bowl and milkshake is amazing!! There’s so many flavors and toppings to choose from. I literally wanted to try everything on the menu...” Indeed, there are so many great options

at the Yard, that’s it’s hard to know where to begin! After all, there are 30-40 ice cream flavors to choose from, 8 edible cookie doughs, floats, specialty cones and bowls, cookie dough pops, and of course, The Yard’s signature Freak Shakes! While the Freak Shakes are actual milkshakes, you can get any flavor in an ice cream Sundae or

in a Specialty Bowl. Order a Sundae if you want your treat in pure ice cream form, or a bowl if you would like a smaller variation. Even better, you can always customize any item to the exact way you want it – whether it’s a simple scoop or an out-of-this-world concoction! A good place to begin, however, is the

Carrollwood exclusive Key Lime Pie Freak Shake. This lime-licious shake was dreamed up by Carolina, her daughter, and two sons, and serves as the staple of the new location. With combined flavors of Key Lime Pie and Graham Central Station ice cream, lime marshmallow cream, and toppings of whipped cream, crushed graham crackers, lime marshmallow cream, a lemon wedge,

and a slice of delicious Key Lime Pie, you can bet this dream shake won’t disappoint. In addition, like all other Freak Shakes at The Yard, the signature mason jar is also decorated with edible goodies, too. If Key Lime isn’t your thing, though, don’t be afraid to try some other popular flavors, such as The Cookie Monster, The Peanut Butter Bliss, and the Caramel Cheesecake. And of course, don’t forget to ask about the mouthwatering shakes on the secret menu: The Champa Bay and the Buccaneer. Keep your eye out for unbelievable monthly specials, as well. Are you gluten-free, vegan, or non-dairy? No problem! The Yard has tasty options available for you too, such as the gluten-free Cereal Killer, and the Not Milk non-dairy, vegan milkshake. Whether you order a Freak Shake, a Sundae or a Bowl, just remember that everything is hand-scooped with care and decorated individually. This may take time, so sit back, relax, and be prepared to say “Wow!” when your slice of heaven is delivered to your table. And when you’re all done devouring your treat, wash out your jar at the rinse sink for a great souvenir. On the go? No worries! Just grab your favorite ice

cream flavor from the “Grab ‘n’ Go” fridge, as well as a pup cup, and you’re on your way. You’ll want to pick up some edible cookie dough To-Go, too. Regardless of what you choose, though, The Yard is more than just another milkshake joint. It’s a place where you can let your childlike imagination soar, a place where you can share a smile with family over elegantly topped milkshakes, or simply, a comfy place to sit back and enjoy a cone. No matter what brings you to The Yard, however, it’s an experience many agree you won’t want to miss! Get your own scoop of joy today at The Yard Milkshake Bar! The Yard Milkshake Bar is located at 13168 N. Dale Mabry Hwy. unit 30, Tampa, 33618. The store’s hours are Monday thru Thursday, 12 – 9:30 P.M., and Friday thru Sunday, 12 – 10 P.M. 20 Minutes to Fitness- story continued from page 1 Doctors now believe that, next to quitting smoking, strength training is the single most crucial thing adults need to do to live longer, healthier lives. After age 30, we lose an average of 8 to 10 pounds of muscle per decade. The key to fitness after 40 is replacing this lost muscle. And muscle is what you’ll build at 20 Minutes to Fitness. In her forties, Virginia regularly competed in bodybuilding. She knew the danger of overexertion working in a gym. When she and her husband researched the proven science behind the strength-building methods employed by exercising following a specific protocol for 20 minutes, they knew this was a niche they could fill. “We realized people no longer have to spend hours at a gym to get the same or better results. We wanted to create this fitness company that could fit into anyone’s lifestyle that’s safe for any age,” Virginia explained.

20 Minutes to Fitness scientifically-based approach called slow cadence resistance training involves working out on specially designed post-rehab medical grade equipment in ultra-slow motion. Each session, you work out on high-end specialized equipment specially calibrated to work specific muscle groups to your level of strength and fitness — without putting stress on joints, tendons, and ligaments. Your fitness coach stays with you the entire time, setting the equipment for you and encouraging you as you reach muscle peak performance. Without your coach, you’d quit long before you ought to! This is where the benefit of this approach kicks in. It typically only takes a minute and a half to three minutes per exercise to reach the point of muscle fatigue. During your “time off” during the week, your muscle is

rebuilding and growing stronger. The studio is kept at 68 degrees, so the workout is sweatless. This is perfect for the busy professional who wants to do an effective, efficient workout on a lunch break and return to work. Research shows that the 20 Minutes to Fitness slow cadence strength training protocol quickly sets off a cascade of positive physiological changes building the strong lean muscles that provide numerous health benefits

- the most significant of which is the slowing down and even preventing the complications commonly associated with the process of aging. 20 Minutes to Fitness slow cadence also results in numerous other proven benefits (not limited to): • Reduces the risk of exerciserelated injuries. • Provides anti-inflammatory effects that boost your immune system.

• Increases your bone density, which helps prevent and reverse osteoporosis • Burns calories by increasing the body’s metabolic rate, controlling weight, and improving body tone. • Controls arthritis by inducing the manufacture of synovial fluid and forcing it to circulate throughout the joint spaces. • Improves emotional well-being by increasing the flow of oxygen and the release of positive mood-altering chemicals in the brain. During a complimentary one-hour orientation appointment, guests can experience several pieces of equipment to understand what it is like to work out on the specialized equipment and why it is so effective. Virginia encourages her clients to have a substantial breakfast, not just coffee, before working out. “When you don’t have fuel, it doesn’t work very well. We talk about nutrition because we want

them to have a great workout, get more energy, and get the results that they are looking for.” For Angela Begin, helping her clients achieve their fitness goals is a rewarding experience. “We have clients come in our doors all the time telling us how they can do things that they couldn’t do before, that their bone density scan came back and it’s improved, or just someone who says, ‘I have to tell you how amazing this place is, how it’s changed my life.’ That makes us want to come to work every day,” says Angela. “For people who say that they don’t have the time, my initial reaction is, do you have time to be sick or not have energy? This really helps. I tell people all the time come in and experience the workout. You never know what you can achieve until you come in, talk with us, and see for yourself,” she added. Unlike a gym, where CDC guidelines may not be as easy to enforce, at 20 Minutes to Fitness, staggered appointments ensure

the staff has time to disinfect between clients. “Every one of our team members is compassionate and dedicated and wants to help our clients improve their quality of life. They are extremely qualified, or they wouldn’t be with us, says Virginia. “We’re all a family, and that’s something I never want to lose. We have each other’s back. We are so passionate about what we do and how we change people’s lives. Our clients talk to us about it all the time, and we’re

just grateful for it.” 20 Minutes to Fitness is located at 11610 North Dale Mabry Highway. The studio has no contracts or membership fees.
