Explore Tampa Bay - Support Local Businesses! I’ve lived in Tampa Bay since 2004, and I am still surprised at the amount of hidden local gems I have yet to explore. From adorable boutiques to food trucks and everything in between, Tampa Bay has numerous amazing small businesses just waiting for you to visit! With the pandemic numbers still rising, and with many business owners struggling to stay afloat, I am encouraging everyone to continue supporting your locally owned stores. Explore your neighborhood and surrounding areas for small shops that offer goods and services you would normally purchase online or at big chain corporations. There are hundreds of businesses around you that are dying for an opportunity to win you as a customer. People that will greet you by name when you first walk in, people that still believe in family values and that go above and beyond to make you feel appreciated for your business. During one of my “adventures” exploring local shops, I found myself at “Salty Paws” in Downtown Dunedin. It happens to be the first doggie ice cream shop in Florida, and it is a dream come true for any dog owner in town! Salty Paws Dunedin is owned and operated by Florida native Robyn Nackino, and Michelle Bimble, who has lived in Tampa since 1999. Robyn and Michelle are family-oriented women who enjoy supporting local businesses and have a passion for animals. I encourage everyone to spend a day exploring Dunedin and its multiple small local businesses, including Salty Paws! But be careful though, their “dog treats” look

so beautiful and delicious that you may be tempted to bite one! Recently, my mother and I have found ourselves on the fun quest to find Tampa Bay’s most unique “locally-owned coffee shop.” We spend every weekend supporting one new coffee shop/bakery in town, getting to know the owners, and exploring their menu options. Our dates are usually less than $20 and we leave having made new friends in a new place. By doing this we’re not only supporting small businesses, but we’ve also gotten to know our city better and all the wonderful things it has to offer. For information on art festivals, concerts, farmers markets, and other local events in town please get online and visit https://www.unation.com/fl/ tampa-bay or eventbrite.com for the latest information on local activities. Another great way to support local organizations is through volunteering. The scope of the need is unprecedented. If you have the time and resources to volunteer at any local non-profit, please don’t hesitate. In these trying times, your help is always needed. Metropolitan Ministries and Feeding Tampa Bay are organizations that are always looking for volunteers, and they help ensure that local families can find help when they need it most. If you’re ready to start, visit https:// www.metromin.org/volunteering-areas/ and https://feedingtampabay.org/ respectively. Stay safe and stay kind, always!

Victor said the personal attention he gives to every customer and the carefully curated selection makes La Vid stand out from other wine concepts. “We are a smaller operation, so it permits us to have that one-onone with the customers. We also are willing to order anything that they want,” he said. “We are glad to cater to their needs. Customers can shop with confidence. I bring in products that are

Tech Talk with Bob: Are you CyberSecure?

You rely on your computer every day to perform multiple tasks; some of which involve transmitting your confidential information over the internet. Online banking, staying in touch with your child’s school, working remotely, paying bills, reviewing the results of your most recent blood test, monitoring and managing your investment accounts, preparing and filing your taxes, even the simple act of ordering a pizza using your credit card. Each of these basic tasks, that most of us do every day is a potential security exploit. I am willing to bet that you are the type of person who is smart enough to wear a seatbelt while driving. That’s because you know that even though you are a safe and considerate driver, you are still at the mercy of the less considerate drivers or those who are not as vigilant as you. You know you need to protect yourself while driving and you know that you need to protect yourself while online, navigating your digital world. Now I know you might be thinking, “Bob, I’m pretty sure my computer is safe. We haven’t had any problems. I’ve been using such and such software from the store where I bought the computer,” or “the tech-savvy neighbor kid put something on my computer for me.” If you are doing any of the financial or medical transactions I mentioned earlier, you don’t you want to be “pretty

10 SEPTEMBER 2021

sure” your computer is safe --- you want to be “certain” it is squeaky-clean! Some of my long-time clients who manage online banking and investment accounts that have balances from thousands to millions of dollars were “pretty sure” their computers were safe too. Every one of these folks was shocked when my cybersecurity team discovered their systems still had security exploits. OK, time for some tough love. If you do anything online of a financial or medical nature, you need to stop procrastinating and be proactive about securing your system. I know that performing deep scans on your computer system is a time-consuming process. Many people do not have the knowledge, resources, and most of all the patience to properly execute a thorough scan. The completion time of these scans have taken a few hours to a few days thanks to the many variables involved: the storage capacity of the hard drive, the number of files on the hard drive, the number of threats discovered on the hard drive, just to name a few. In addition to the automated scans we perform, my team also manually inspects critical areas of your system for threats that are not typically discovered by anti-malware software. A lot of the more popularly known and usually all the FREE anti-malware usually complete their scans in 30 minutes or less, which can be very appealing. No one wants to wait for a long scan. But let’s be realistic, you’re not ordering a pizza; you’re protecting the device that holds the keys to your digital world. My cybersecurity team performs a through security scan of your computer “so

you know for certain” whether your system is clean or not. Since these security scans have taken from hours to days to complete, to be fair, I only charge one hour of bench time to perform these scans. Whether your scan takes a few hours or 30 hours, your only obligation is our onehour bench fee. Once my cybersecurity team completes your scan, I will personally review the results with you. If you require any additional work, I will discuss your options and costs. I want you to have all the facts regarding your computer’s security health so you can make a wellinformed decision based on what solution best serves you. In observance of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which happens to be October, I challenge you to “know for certain” whether your computer is in order security-wise. Starting right now and through the end of October I will do a security scan of your computer on my bench for only $99.00. Yes, for less than the cost of a onehour service appointment, my team will assess the security of your computer! Even if you think your computer is secure, I still challenge you to have my team check it. If I find that your system is squeakyclean, YOUR SCAN IS FREE! If we don’t find any potential

threats on your computer, I won’t charge you the $99. If I do find something on your computer, then at least you get a meticulous, timeconsuming, supervised by professionals, security scan of your system for only 99 bucks. Never forget, cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Whether you are a business or non-profit who keeps records about clients, customers, prospects, employees, vendors, sales, budgets, inventories… you get the idea. It is your responsibility to protect your personal network, your computer’s operation, and your data. Even a home user who may keep records about club members, kids’ sports leagues, volunteer work, or just filing your income taxes on your home computer is a target. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my Friend. My staff and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727-534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. We Keep You Safer In Your Digital World!

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: FALL OUTLOOKS Dr. Wayne Adams FALL EXAM DATES: SAT: October 2, December 4; PSAT October 13; ACT: September 11, October 23, December 11. Now that school has started and most schedules have settled down, we can all take a long breath and think about fall planning. Seniors and their parents are thinking about applying to colleges, the SAT and/or the ACT Exam, FASFA forms, Bright Futures, and other scholarships … on top of all the academics and activities that constantly demand attention. The “gorilla in Florida” is the UF deadline. According to the UF website, applications are due on November 1st, and any received after November 16 are accepted on a space-available basis, which is extremely limited. Most other schools are fine with a January 1st application and standard exam scores following soon behind. For those wanting to apply for early option or early decision, most of these programs are fine with exam scores coming in late November through December – but make sure to check the dates with your target schools to be absolutely sure. More important, with most schools your percentage of acceptances from Early Acceptance or Early Decision are roughly three times the rate of acceptances from the regular application dates. Juniors and Sophomores are simply looking forward to successfully completing their fall term, and doing their best on the PSAT coming in mid-October. Many are already preparing for the full exams, which gives them more time to prepare and experience the exams. On occasion, I have tutored seventh graders for the SAT and ACT, and it is becoming more common for me to start with ninth or tenth

12 SEPTEMBER 2021

graders as well. When I am asked, “Wayne, what do you do?” most expect the answer, “I am a tutor.” Instead, my answer is, “I help my students have their best possible futures which includes doing their best on the SAT and/or ACT Exam.” This is why each of my students/parents receives a copy of two guides that I have written. The first is Negotiating with Colleges, which has saved many families from $1,000 to $10,000 a year in college costs. The second is How to Write College Application Essays that Colleges will Love, with 104 pages including how to write great essays and over 40 examples with my comments and explanations. My new guide Achieve and Maintain Your PEAK MENTAL PERFORMANCE ZONE on the SAT and ACT including HOW TO WIN OVER PERFORMANCE ANXIETY has proven to be very helpful for my students to do their best on these exams. Also, I help with college application information, ideas about possible schools, coaching for students in how to study most effectively, and special negotiating points. Many Florida parents and students are very surprised to

learn that it can easily cost less to attend a top university than a Florida public university. The reason is because top academic schools have large endowments, and adopted generous grant and assistance policies several years ago to help their students graduate “debt free” if possible, and make awards on a “net cost” basis that includes room and board. For example, if your student is admitted to Harvard and the family makes $75,001 - $110,000 a year, the net cost is $15,553 a year according to collegescorecard.com. That is often less than the net cost for UF on a 100% Bright Futures scholarship because students at UF must pay full room and board which can easily run more than the Harvard net cost. At Yale, the net cost is $11,492; Princeton, $16,989; Stanford, $10,631; U Chicago, $17,929; and MIT $14,381. If You Would Like To Talk More About How I Can Help You, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@ mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading,

Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to eight of the top ten universities in the country, seventeen of the top twentyfive, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Powerstories Theatre Amplifies Women’s Voices with Voices of Women Theatre Festival By Deborah Bostock-Kelley On October 6-17, 2021, Powerstories Theatre, in collaboration with Thrü-Line, A Theatrical Production Company, are proud to do their part to help women crash through the glass ceiling and support women’s voices with The Voices of Women, a theatre festival showcasing diverse stories written entirely by women playwrights. In the last survey taken by Broadway by the Numbers before the pandemic, 85% of all theatre playwrights were male voices. Women are still fighting to be recognized in board rooms, government, and theatre. A hybrid of live-in-theatre productions and live-streamed prerecorded performances on Powerstories’ virtual stage, The Voices of Women Theatre Festival spotlights local Tampa Bay and North American playwrights to a global audience. After each matinee and evening production, the playwright, cast, crew, and audience will meet online for a Zoom question and answer talkback or stream live from the theatre. “My life suddenly became more simple and clear when I realized my purpose was to raise the voices of women through theatre. The Voices of Women Theatre Festival is the next great step in my dream and the Powerstories mission to open minds and hearts and inspire action worldwide,” said Fran Powers, founder. “For $15, patrons local and abroad can watch plays written by female playwrights and afterward, join a group of women supporting women, engaging in meaningful conversations. There’s a power in belonging and creating community.” From shorts and full-length plays, a mixture of comedies and dramas, family-friendly content to adults only, the audience will experience a diverse selection of topics from female playwrights of all ages and backgrounds. “The Voices of Women Theatre Festival aligns with the Thrü-Line’s mission of S.E.R.V.I.C.E. This states we believe in showcasing new works and artists along with ‘well-known’ works and voicing the stories of the unheard,” said playwright and Thrü-Line co-founder, Gretchen SuarezPena.

“Theatre can be a powerful voice for social change,” said playwright Janice Creneti. “Powerstories not only prides itself on work that is good but doing good work.” From interviews with the playwrights, the overall consensus is men are responsible for the majority of all written works on stage. It’s challenging to find significant female roles when the playwright is writing without the same life experience or female perspective, and it’s time to shine a spotlight on the talented women no longer wanting to stand in their shadow. Playwright Joi Banks succinctly summed up the purpose of this theatre festival for women, “We rise by lifting each other.” To learn more or purchase tickets for the hybrid Voices of Women Theatre Festival on October 6-17, 2021, visit powerstories.com/ voices-of-women-theatre-festival-schedule. Powerstories Theatre is proud to be sponsored by Hillsborough County Commissioners and Arts Council and festival sponsored with the help of CDB Injury Law. To learn about festival sponsorship opportunities, visit powerstories. com/voices-of-women-theatre-festival-sponsorship-information.

Playwrights selected for the inaugural festival are: • Carolyn Gage - In McClintock’s Corn (Maine) • Carrie Klewin Lawrence, Katharine Rex, Gretchen Suarez-Pena, Laurie E. Tanner, and Janet S. Tiger - See Thrü Women: A Night of Short Scenes (Florida) • Amy Losi - No Fall My Hand (New York) • Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Once Upon Uhhh…. (Florida) • Janice Creneti - My Year of Saying No (Florida) • Maggie Gamson - President Montgomery (Florida) • Laura Emack - THE PRIDE OF BANGOR [or What Not to Wear] (Maine) • Dana Hall & Kenisha Morgan - No Justice (Illinois) • Katy Copeland - Meet You Downstairs New York) • Beth Urech - Jeannette Rankin Fights Back (New Mexico) • Allison Fradkin - Holy Inappropriate (Illinois) • Joi Banks - L’Artiste, It’s French (Florida) • Jo MacDonald - Neechie-itas (Canada) Playwright Katy Copeland explained, “What grabbed my attention most about this festival was that it provides an artistic platform for emerging female playwrights while highlighting diverse voices and sparking open, honest conversations.” In this festival featuring playwrights from Florida, Maine, New Mexico, and Canada is an array of topics ranging from mental health, autism, gender nonconformance, spousal abuse, sexual violence, human trafficking, mandatory sentencing, social entrepreneurship, finding your truth, power struggles, sexuality, LGBTQIA+ issues, voting rights, family relationships, racial inequality, religious liberation, and female relationships.

When asked for her favorite patient success story, she responded,

“I see them every day. People come in with very loose dentures and cannot chew or smile, and what we do increases their comfort. They come out of the office like a different person because now they have stable teeth in their mouth. They are more confident.” Dr. Mediouni recalled a patient with worn-out dentures who’d been out of work because he didn’t have the self-esteem to go for a job interview. “People look at your teeth; how you present yourself is very important. He was missing front

teeth. We did a full-mouth reconstruction, and the second he left my chair, his whole personality changed. Even his posture changed. He was so grateful and thankful, and he got a job two days after that,” she said. “That’s why I love what I do. Dental disorders cause a profound impact on patients’ lives and social behaviors affecting their self-esteem. To improve their function is why I am so passionate about what I do every day. I’m so grateful to be in this profession.” Dr. Mediouni takes

her office safety seriously. Treating teens to geriatric patients, she expertly follows all CDC guidelines to protect her patients and staff during the pandemic. Each patient must complete a Covid information form and have a temperature check outside before entering the practice. The team each wears the recommended N95 masks and face shields, disposable gowns, and hair caps. “We have UV lights for all of our operating rooms and medical air filters. We’re all vaccinated
