TAMPA BAY - CITY IN PINK One of the most significant tools we have today is the power of human connection. That’s why awareness months, weeks, and days are so important: They rally us together to spread a message and to show support. They help us create a comforting feeling that no matter what you’re going through, you don’t have to do it alone. Having the support of your loved ones, as well as the community where you live, can make a huge difference. Our beautiful city of Tampa Bay does a fantastic job at celebrating “National Month” events. October observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, LGBT History Month, ADHD Awareness Month, Emotional Wellness Month, and Italian-American Heritage Month, amongst others numerous events of extreme significance not just nationally but worldwide. During October, numerous momand-pop shops and other locally owned businesses established multiple promotions and fundraising events to show their support for many of these different causes while getting their name and message out there to the public. Starting October 1st until the 31st, 2021, Tampa Bay will be shinning pretty in pink! CREW Tampa Bay efforts included asking owners, managers, and tenants of Tampa Bay properties to display their support to breast cancer awareness month by illuminating pink for CREW Tampa Bay CITY IN PINK. Per CREW’s Tampa Bay website message, “CREW Tampa Bay CITY IN PINK is a reminder to stay vigilant in the fight for a cure and will be a touching tribute to breast cancer survivors and the lives that have been affected by the disease. With

so much uncertainty in our world today, we want CREW Tampa Bay CITY IN PINK to be a source of HOPE for those who have been affected by this disease and a reminder that cancer never stops, and neither should its awareness. CREW Tampa Bay CITY IN PINK has been going strong for six years! We want to continue the success of this Tampa Bay tradition with more buildings than ever. Together we can inspire our community and share a light of hope, courage, and strength.” Please visit https:// crewtampabay.org/ for more information. For resourceful information on breast screening exams and mammograms for lowincome households, please check: https:// www.freemammograms.org/city/fl-tampa Other October observances include; National Apple Month, Vegetarian Awareness Month, National Pizza Month, National Dessert Month, and National Pork Month. You would think vegetarians would not want to share their month with bacon lovers, but I am glad there’s no beef between them! This sounds like the perfect month to indulge at a family-owned restaurant and enjoying a big Italian-American meal. Make sure you leave enough room for an apple pie for dessert; it can be your new October tradition! With Halloween festivities fastly approaching, the City of Tampa wants to keep families participating in trick-or-treating events as safe from COVID as possible. For a detailed list of Halloween safety tips and an incredible list of family-friendly Halloween events, please visit: https://www.tampa.gov/ news/city-tampa-shares-covid-19-safetytips-trick-or-treating-and-other-halloweenfestivities Until next time, stay safe!

OCTOBER 2021 7

Tech Talk with Bob: Happy Cybersecurity Month!

Did you know October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month? Previously coined National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Regardless of what you call it, it is now in its 18th year. Its purpose? To raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity across our nation and ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online. A noble mission because unfortunately cybersecurity is not properly addressed by most computer owners. Please understand this, at some point in time you will have a security issue with your computer. Almost every computer we have surveyed has had some type of threat lurking in the system. It amazes me the number of times people “think” their computer is secure, only to find out that their system is still harboring threats. The threats we find vary between actual viruses all the way to strangers having complete remote control of these computers. So, the odds are in your favor that you will, at some

8 OCTOBER 2021

point, have security issues. Now the question is, “do you want to be proactive and stay ahead of these threats;” or “do want to do it the hard way, the expensive way, by doing nothing and letting the chips fall where they may? Not to mention the days of grief you will experience as you hope your data isn’t lost while you pay a security professional to salvage your precious data.” Unfortunately, I see people go through this every week. Trust me my Friend, this is a place you do not want to find yourself. You must decide, because at some moment in time you will find yourself talking to me or some other security professional to help dig you out of this mess. Some of my long-time clients who have banking and investment accounts with balances from thousands to millions of dollars were sure their computers were safe. Every one of these folks was shocked when my cybersecurity team discovered their systems still had security exploits. I equate this to driving a car; wouldn’t you prefer to be wearing your seatbelt before the crash? My cybersecurity team performs a through security scan of your computer, so you know for certain whether your system is clean or not. Since these

security scans have taken from hours to days to complete, to be fair, I only charge one hour of bench time to perform these scans. Whether your scan takes a few hours or 30 hours, your only obligation is our one-hour bench fee. Once my cybersecurity team completes your scan, I will personally review the results with you. If you require any additional work, I will discuss your options. I want you to have all the facts regarding your computer’s security health so you can make a wellinformed decision based on what solution best serves you. In observance of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, I implore you to know if your computer is in order security-wise. Right now, and through the end of October, I am accepting a limited number of computers where I will perform a security scan of your computer on my bench for only $99. Yes, for less than the cost of a onehour service appointment, my cybersecurity team will assess the security of your computer! Even if you think your computer is secure, I still challenge you to have my team check it. If I find that your system is squeakyclean, YOUR SCAN IS FREE! That’s right, if we don’t find any potential threats on your computer, I won’t charge you for

the scan. To guarantee your appointment for our Cybersecurity Awareness Month Security Scan call 727-534-4000. Please remember, appointment slots for this offer are limited so call soon. Never forget, cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Whether you are a business or non-profit who keeps records about clients, customers, prospects, employees, vendors, sales, budgets, inventories… you get the idea. It is your responsibility to protect your personal network, your computer’s operation, and your data. Even a home user who may keep records about club members, kids’ sports leagues, volunteer work, or just filing your income taxes on your home computer is a target. Are you certain your computer is safe? You don’t have to do this alone my Friend. My staff and I are here to keep your computer safer and keep it running. We have the best solutions already in place and we’re only a phone call away. Call us anytime at 727534-4000. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. We Keep You Safer In Your Digital World!

OCTOBER 2021 9

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: 4 MAJOR REASONS! Dr. Wayne Adams Fall Exam Dates: SAT on Nov 6 and Dec 4, Mar 12; ACT on Oct 23, Dec 11, Feb 12. THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE recently made a small reduction in Bright Futures scholarships in 2022 by eliminating the $600 annual textbook stipend for scholarship winners. All other provisions remained the same. As you know, the major screening hurdle for qualifying for Bright Futures is the SAT or ACT score. The 100% level requires an SAT superscore of 1330 or an ACT composite of 29. The 75% level requires an SAT superscore of 1210 or an ACT composite of 25. Many times parents will tell me, “My student has excellent grades, but has not scored well on the SAT and/or the ACT.” I believe THERE ARE FOUR MAJOR REASONS GOOD STUDENTS DON’T SCORE WELL on these exams. REASON #1: Most high school students lack key fundamentals such as having had phonics, grammar, “recall” vocabulary, critical thinking, and the mathematics needed to do well on these exams. In many cases, they “overthink” to find the answers. According to multiple research, the vocabulary for a senior in high school is about the same as for an eighthgrader. Unfortunately, this is no lol! My students learn “new ways to learn” that greatly increases both learning and remembering vocabulary and dramatically improving their English/Writing and Grammar abilities. REASON #2: Educational directions in most high schools do not match what is required to do well on the SAT and ACT. Pre-calculus, most geometry, and most algebra courses poorly prepare for these exams. Recently, I tutored a 7th grader who had not had algebra or geometry. His baseline score as

10 OCTOBER 2021

we started was 375. When he took the actual ACT exam, he scored very close to a 600 in math. REASON #3: Most Prep Classes in high school are woefully inadequate. Recently, I learned that a leading private high school used the worst SAT prep book on the market today and the students were bored to death. In other words, prep classes are seen as “fluff” breaks between the real “academic” work at school … yet the SAT and ACT results often have more impact on students’ future (admissions and scholarships) than most classes in high school. REASON #4: Students don’t know how to achieve and maintain their peak “Mental Performance Zone” on the SAT, ACT, and other tests in life. I am convinced half of a student’s doing his/her best is mental. One of my highest scoring students said, “Dr. A, my biggest problem is test anxiety.” So I wrote a guide which we use in our classes that has proven to greatly help my students in “doing their best on the SAT and ACT, and in life. THE GOOD NEWS IS …I consistently find that students respond incredibly well and improve in our classes. My role is to quickly help them determine where they need to work and to be a resource as they progress. Instead of my lecturing, we work together to determine a student’s baseline level, then then structure their learning around their needs. In our classes, there are no “good or bad” scores. Instead, they simply indicate where we need to work to improve. It is very satisfying to see their motivations soar when their perspective changes from “Can I do this?” to “I can do this.” to “I can do this well.” and then to “Let me show you how well I can do.” They discover that real competition is internal and - when they do their best - external

results take care of themselves. Learning the strategies often result in comments like, “Cool” and “That makes it a lot easier”. More important, they learn how to “learn for a lifetime”. REWARDING COMMENTS … “I have been offered a $32,000/year academic scholarship at a great school and they also want to offer more on the athletic side.” “Just got news that I have been early-accepted to my dream school, (Top 5 school).” “Dr. A., thank so much for helping me with my college application essay. Your changes and additions, not to mention cutting its length, were incredible. Thank you!” “Our family is working together through your book How To Survive And Thrive As A Freshman At A Secular University. Things have changed a lot since we went to college. Thanks for helping us prepare for what is coming soon.” “Your counseling about college admissions, and especially your guide Negotiating with Colleges, has been ‘eye-opening’ and very helpful in cutting our college costs. Thank you so much.” If You Would Like To Talk More About How I Can Help You, please contact me at 727-253-0639 or at wwa0811@

mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve around 200+ points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to “9 of the Top 10” universities in the country, “18 of the top 25”, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He also tutored three juniors who were national merit finalists on the PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Current home design and decor trends to consider By Decorating Den Can you believe it’s already autumn? We’ve kissed another summer goodbye and soon enough, we’ll be welcoming winter with open arms. If you’re in between seasonal decor and you’re looking for a way to bring one of the rooms in your home to life, you may consider a style option that’s currently trending. From color options and contrasting patterns to bold and daring decor, there are plenty of current home and design decor trends to choose from. Here are a few of our favorites to consider:

are looking for that color can hope to answer,” shared Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to symbolize thoughts and ideas, many designers and brands are embracing the language of color to engage and connect.” These shades can work wonders as wall and accent colors, but can also make a major statement in accessories.

Consider hues like peacock blue and burnt orange to add some character to your home. Bring your rooms to life with houseplants House plants have always been an endearing accessory, but they’re more popular than ever. The pandemic encouraged more people to take on greater responsibilities in the comfort of their homes, and for some, that led to adding more flowers, succulents and other plants to their design and decor scheme. But they don’t only make a gorgeous accent piece — they also come with many additional benefits, according to interior decorator Emilie Munroe: “Indoor trees and plants are going to continue their ascent into home design mainstay,” she shared with Good Housekeeping magazine. “They freshen indoor air, bring the clarity and calm of nature indoors, act like a sculpture

Consider the Pantone Color of the Year It’s not too late to get behind the color of the year, and 2021 came with two: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people

Be willing to play with color in accents. Take a break from neutrals Color has always been a powerful tool to use as you revive your living space. With winter on its way, it’s important to keep your home from feeling stale and out of touch. Incorporating more warm colors into your living room can help guests feel more comfortable, and it can bring an element of depth to your space.

to reopen because their loved one had already started to decline. When you’re home, and there’s nothing to do, you get depressed, sitting around watching TV or sleeping all day.” When better safety guidance was received from the government, TLC decided to reopen in May 2020, which meant many happy members could return to their favorite place. Though the business struggled for a while, once vaccines became available, the floodgates opened up of those seeking the type of programs that TLC offers. “Because they had socialization and activities again, all of a sudden, the same loved one who was experiencing some form of cognitive or physical decline was thriving again.” Featuring a bilingual staff and following CDC protocols, TLC offers an adult day program for halfday up to five hours and a full-day up to nine hours, 9 AM to 5 PM, making it flexible for the caregiver. Members are served a delicious breakfast, lunch, and a snack approved by a registered dietician. “Adult Day Care is for someone who wants to live at home, or their caregiver wants them to live at home and have a safe place to come for the day to have fun, meet new friends, enjoy therapeutic and educational activities, and age-appropriate fitness programs,” he said. ”It’s so

14 OCTOBER 2021

important for the caregiver to be able to take a break. Caregivers suffering from burnout and exhaustion really need to take care of themselves first so they can take care of their loved ones. Caregivers often experience guilt and feel that they should be ‘doing it all.’ Seeking help does not make you a failure. Actually, quite the opposite. Seeking help benefits both you and your loved one.” Tom explained that many people don’t even know adult day care exists. “That is the key – getting the word out – that this place is here. It is incredible, and many people don’t know about it. There’s help here. If they’re not appropriate for our center, we can help them find another alternative. It may be time for assisted living, memory care, or maybe even other options,” he said, “We get a lot of responses when people hear about us, ‘if only I had had this when I was taking care of my loved one. I could have really used what you do.’ “ “Our goal was to be different and have a homelike environment when people come in, and they feel extremely comfortable. We have an activity planned every hour. We go back and forth between an active and non-active activity. We don’t want to wear anybody out.” Nicknamed ‘The TLC Fun Club,’ TLC is all about socialization and making friends. “There’s different types of socialization. For example, some of our members can’t verbalize

very well, so they listen and love to interact with others through the different activities. They want to be part of a group having fun. Even if they have difficulty, there is still socialization without speaking. We have something for everyone.” Seniors who’ve transitioned from

surgery and in-patient hospitalization to returning home may need someone to look out for them. TLC is a safe place for them to recover while meeting other seniors, staying active, and making sure someone assists them. During admission to the center, each member goes

through an activity and social history assessment to determine what they used to or currently like to do. “A lot of caregivers are like ‘my mom would never do that’ and after a few visits ‘I can’t believe my mom loves that.’” Therapeutic activities

include seated indoor volleyball, bean bag toss, giant Yahtzee, chess, dominoes, darts, arts, crafts, singing, dancing, armchair traveling, Zumba, Tai Chi, yoga, foosball, a drum circle, ice cream socials, birthday parties, non-alcoholic happy hour,

monthly themed events, and so much more! The center also features a relaxation Zen lounge complete with a waterfall, Himalayan salt lamps, and relaxing music for members who need a break from so many activities. “For us, it is all about

our members having fun. It’s a party atmosphere. We try to have a party for everything. At the end of the day, if they aren’t walking out with a big smile on their face, we’ve failed. That’s the key – for them to have a wonderful day, meet new friends and have fun. When their loved ones come to pick them up, a lot of our members look over at them and say, ‘what are you doing here? I’m not ready to go home yet. No, it’s too early’.” TLC Adult Day Care is located at 3970 Tampa Rd., Suite J, Oldsmar. BUDGET BLINDS CENTRAL TAMPA l TARPON SPRINGS l DUNEDIN Celebrates 6 Years! Budget Blinds of Central Tampa, Tarpon Springs and Dunedin became a franchise six years ago. Rob Emmerson was looking to buy a franchise in the Tampa Bay area and searched for a very long time for a business that he would be proud to represent and be a part of. He and his wife, Annemarie, were customers of Budget Blinds on several occasions and were very happy with the quality and options that were available to them. Rob moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1991. Although not a true native, he classifies himself as one. The lifestyle and his interest in sailing, fishing and the beach make it a nature place that Rob Emmerson has called home. “I can’t image living anywhere else.” says Emmerson. A constant winner of awards with Budget Blinds including Rookie of the Year, many corporate prizes, Super Service multiple times, Vendor Awards and last year earned the Budget Blinds Care Charity franchise for his giving back to his community. “I don’t care how much is spent from my customers or what is bought, as long as they buy from us!” Emmerson expressed with wanting to make the sale in his districts but wanting what is best for the customer. This is also a reflection of his staffwhether it is the person

you talk with in the office to the person that is coming to your home to discuss your needs or the person that is installing your window treatments. You will receive the same quality and high standards of characteristics. Each and every one knows that it is their job to make the customer happy. “Do whatever it takes to make the customer happy.”, is our motto according to Emmerson. Why Budget Blinds over a different window treatment company or the box store down the street from you? We offer free consulting, free measuring, and free installation. We come directly

to your home with samples and information that will enhance your buying experience. A box store will have a sub-contractor come to your home for a fee. Measurements and installation are an extra expense. And, you will be working with people that actually, work with the Budget Blinds company. Also, we know window treatments. We are not being called from the garden section of the store to try and answer your window treatment questions. When we come to your home, we discuss your lifestyle, decor and budget. Yes, everyone has a budget.

Whether you are looking to place simple window coverings for an apartment complex or completing your dream home with the highest end of products. Budget Blinds can meet your budget. We ask the questions to make sure we are giving you the product that you want. No matter if it is one window with a low end cost, plantation shutters or custom drapes to match the rest of your home, Budget Blinds has what you want. As we are celebrating our sixth anniversary during the month of October, we would like to extend a special offer of 20% off selected Signature

Series products. And as an added bonus, PureVu Window Cleaning will wash your windows (up to 18 panels), for $100. PureVu Window Cleaning will wash the inside and outside of your windows without the use of chemicals. You don’t want to purchase new window treatments and then look out your dirty windows. This

combined offer expires October 31, 2021. Note: You do not have to include the window washing service with the 20% discount of selected Signature Series products. This is just an added bonus to our anniversary special. Budget Blinds of Central Tampa, Tarpon Springs and Dunedin cares about

the community. To date we have given contributions to: Camelot, Humane Society of Tampa Bay, Reach Out Speak Out, Feeding Tampa Bay and several groups of non-profits to benefit one time needs. To contact Budget Blinds you can call us at: 727.943.8521 or
