The Legacy Continues–Drs. Raj and Prakash Machhar: Healthcare Associates of Pasco By Tom Bostock There is a continuous bright star in Pasco county’s world of internal medicine. He gladly provides an outstanding level of personal care for all his satisfied patients with a practice that is large enough to serve the needs of every patient, yet small enough to provide them with the individualized care that is a hallmark of the practice. If you live in New Port Richey, by now you know I’m referring to Healthcare Associates and the practice of longtime, highly respected, board-certified internist, Dr. Prakash Machhar. His practice, in Pasco County, continues to maintain its Five Star rating, a testament to his caring expertise, demonstrated concern, and patient satisfaction. Dr. Raj Machhar (above), son of owner Dr. Prakash Machhar, is the newest memebr of Healthcare Associates of Pasco, adding his esteemed expertise to an already successful practice.

When Humana started measuring practices for quality of care in 2014, they ranked Dr. Machhar’s #1 in the state of Florida. His practice focuses on preventing the need for hospitalization by providing critical care from his office. When a patient requires hospitalization, he can see him at both Trinity hospital and several local rehab

Boos, Breasts, Bolts, & Votes! The COVID-19 pandemic has brought with it illness, death, and a “new normal” that includes social distancing and wearing masks—not to mention significant disturbances to many families’ every day lives. With fall already here and the countdown to Halloween on, many parents are left wondering, is Trick-OrTreating canceled for 2020? The short answer would be, probably not. The long answer; it’s not going to be the same. It’s going to look and feel very different than in previous years, and it will vary a lot depending on where you live. In Pinellas County, where I currently reside, we have a Facebook group for our community to stay on top of whatever is going on in our neighborhood. Some concerned parents decided to get online and ask if there would be anyone interested in still celebrating Halloween this year. The response was incredibly positive despite the pandemic situation. Many neighbors were open to trick-ortreaters knocking on their doors, while others informed everyone that they would be placing bowls with candy outside their homes for the little ones to pick a few and move on to the next property. Whether you decide to partake on the Halloween festivities this year, don’t forget coronavirus guidelines are still in effect, social distancing, wearing a mask, and properly sanitizing/hand-washing. Try considering costumes with masks already incorporated, or that would allow a mask to be worn appropriately against the face to provide the best protection, and always allow proper hand hygiene to be performed after every house visit. Experts also agree that all adults should even be wearing masks if going door to door to help reduce transmissions of the coronavirus. Another thing you could try would be making individual baggies containing a few pieces of candy for every kid, and instead of having them place their little hands in your candy bowls, hand them each a goodie bag and a sanitizing wipe to go along with it! This month let’s also try to focus our attention on something else aside COVID,

Trump, and Biden. Whether you identify as a Republican, Democrat, or Independent, always be respectful and kind to everyone, because you don’t know their struggles. There is never a need for name-calling, bullying, destroying property, or belittling anyone because their beliefs differ from yours. Remember, we all want what’s best for our loved ones and our country, even if we disagree on how to get it. Let’s shift our attention to more prominent causes that can bring us closer as a community instead of dividing us! Did you know that October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month? It’s a yearly international health campaign organized by significant charities all over the world to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. Together, we can raise awareness by participating in different local walking/ running events, by donating to various charities, by providing emotional support to those affected by the disease, by sharing valuable information, by promoting health check-ups with our friends all over social media, or only by repping pink. Every year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events unite communities with a shared determination to save lives from breast cancer - all while raising money to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer through research and early detection. Through October, tune into www.facebook.com/ TampaStrides to participate in several fun virtual activities that support this vital cause. I want to conclude by saying Congratulations to our Tampa Bay Lightning for becoming Eastern Conference Champions and making it to the Stanley Cup Finals! By the time you read this, hopefully, the Stanley will be tanning on our beautiful Florida beaches soon. Go Bolts!!! Until next time,

Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi.

Tech Talk with Bob: Another Phish Tale!

Phishing (pronounced “fishing”) is one of the many ways cyber criminals can attack you. It is the most popular strategy used by criminals to trick you into voluntarily handing them your personal data, your sensitive information, and sometimes your cash. In this type of attack, the criminal will attempt to extort cash from unwitting people by sending an email threatening to publicly humiliate the email recipient. Here’s an excerpt of one that ended up in my inbox just the other day. “Hello! I am a hacker who has access to your operating system. I also have full access to your account. I’ve been watching you for a few months now. The fact is that you were infected with malware through

6 OCTOBER 2020

an adult site that you visited. If you are not familiar with this, I will explain. Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device. This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.” The email continues. “I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence. Why your antivirus did not detect malware? Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.” The email then threatens to release alleged videos of the recipient to all of the recipient’s contacts. “With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts

on social networks. I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.” Then they go in for the kill. “If you want to prevent this, transfer the amount of $500 to my bitcoin address. After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear from me again. I give you 50 hours (more than 2 days) to pay. I have a notice

reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter. If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed. Best regards!” This social engineering technique has swindled cash from some recipients who received this email or one similar to it. Multiple versions of this email are circulating the internet. So, what do you do if one of these emails ends up in your inbox? Immediately delete it. There really is no way to avoid these emails. Even if you use spam filters some will find their way through. Your best defense is internet safety awareness. As for this phish tale, you’ll be the smart one who got away because you didn’t take the

The Tree Service and Landscape Design Pros By Morgan Fliss A beautiful garden and strong trees add the perfect curbside appeal to any business or home. But like any feature, the value will not increase without proper care and attention. Trees are no exception! Whether you need to remove a potentially hazardous tree or boost your curb appeal, certified local arborist and ALLPRO owner Pete Spiridis, and his professional team of experts can gladly and affordably take care of your tree or landscaping needs. If you leave tree trimming to the professionals at ALLPRO, you and your trees will be in the best hands. All arborists use highquality equipment that is industry approved. The ALLPRO “team is experienced, skilled, fully licensed, and insured.” Pete and the ALLPRO experts are at your service no matter if you own a residential property or a business. Their services include designing impeccable landscaping, trimming every type of tree, grinding/removing tree stumps, installing and removing sod, placing rock beds, and laying mulch, just to name a few. Happy customer, Susan, gave nothing but compliments to Pete and the ALLPRO experts. “We’re extremely pleased with the ALLPRO. Pete immediately responded to our call for an estimate and gave us a prompt, thorough, written bid. Our tree removal project began and was completed exactly on time and they left our property looking pristine. The work was excellent, and the crew was experienced, professional, and friendly. I would highly recommend ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping,” Susan said. Hurricane and Severe Weather Damage? ALLPRO To The Rescue! Tampa Bay is the lightning capital of the United States so there is clearly no shortage of lightning, hurricanes, severe winds, and heavy rain. Pete

10 OCTOBER 2020

explains that “trees in the urban areas of Tampa Bay endure especially brutal stimuli. Some trees do not have the genetic predisposition to deal with these forces.” However, at ALLPRO, the arborists “custom-tailor solutions that promote the health of your unique trees and landscapes.” ALLPRO is ready to help during the 2020 Hurricane Season. The professionals show that a category one hurricane with winds at 74 to 95 miles per hour can still cause damage. “Large branches of trees will snap, and shallowly rooted trees may be toppled,” possibly causing “extensive damage to power lines,” creating outages that can last a “few to several days.” Downed trees can block roads, delaying the response for emergency crews, and snapped branches can become lethal projectiles. “After the recent heavy winds in Tampa, we ended up with a palm tree and old landscaping mess,” says Mary H. “Pete and his staff took care of three fallen palm trees, and he designed a new, clean look that meshed with some exciting new landscaping. The job was beautiful, and we could not be happier! We got what we paid for as promised and on time!” The time to prepare is now. When you take the steps that you need to make your home secure, don’t forget one crucial element that is often overlooked and can cause damage to your home, your trees. The solution is not the removal of trees but taking proper preventative care of them. According to Pete, “more of the trees that failed during the 2018 and 2019 Hurricane seasons were improperly pruned trees.” Proper pruning not only improves your trees’ overall health, but it also ensures that your family will be able to enjoy the shade of their favorite trees for many years to come. Tree Trimming, Removal, and Stump Grinding

From creating a dangerous threat to the health of your home or causing an infestation of insects, it is extremely important to have your trees professional trimmed often. There are many safety and aesthetic reasons to get your tree trimmed, but no matter the reason, ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping is here to help. ALLPRO serves the Tampa Bay area including Pinellas, Pasco, and Hillsborough county. The experts at ALLPRO analyze and trim each tree in a unique matter, to make a huge impact. They will always work with you to formulate a trimming plan that meets all of your needs. “Overgrown trees should be trimmed as soon as possible. If your trees are young, it is especially important that you have a professional trim them sooner rather than later. Pruning trees at a young age is the ideal way to spur growth and ward off issues that could arise as the tree matures,” Peter says on his website. As well as trimming trees, ALLPRO is the place to go when you need to remove trees that are causing problems to your house or business. Fully licensed experts from ALLPRO will use the necessary equipment to remove your tree in a safe and timely matter. “Call us up for tree removal services and you will enjoy a calming sense of peace, knowing that your property will be tended to by the best tree experts in all of Tampa Bay and Clearwater. We remove every type of tree, from those gigantic

palm trees to southern live oak trees, citrus trees, and beyond,” said Pete on his website. ALLPRO also provides affordable stump grinding that eliminates the entire stump as well as its root ball. Experts will grind your tree stump without having any negative impacts on your land such as big holes or damage to sewer lines. Customers continually share nothing but great things about their experiences with ALLPRO. “ALLPRO was very responsive to the initial inquiry, highly competitive for the work that needed to be completed and they were extremely professional when completing the work. They took care of all the permits and were flexible with the scheduling of the service. When they arrived, they immediately got to work and performed the work in one day. I would HIGHLY recommend using them for any work of this nature that you need to be completed,” customer, David said. Another client, Julie K, gave ALLPRO a five-star review by saying “Not only did he cut the tree down, but he cleaned my gutters, cleaned my roof, planted sod down where he grinded the stump. He did a very professional job, pulled a permit, and had to remove a panel of our wood fence. They [even] replaced it better than it was on before. This company is honest, reasonable, and very willing to go the extra mile. I love this company and I can’t say good enough things about them!”

Experts in Landscape Design and Installation Every stunning yard has its origin in exemplary landscape design and installation. ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping staffs highly creative designers who relish the opportunity to work with clients to create gorgeous landscape plans. “Our goal is to build an aesthetically pleasing landscape that requires minimal maintenance and satisfies you in every possible way,” says Pete. ALLPRO has landscape design and installation down to a science. The result is always a majestic landscape that holds its beauty across posterity. ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping goes beyond the basics of landscape design. “We make every effort to stay within clients’ budget limits,” says Pete. “Furthermore, we get the job done with incredible speed. You won’t have to worry about our team dragging their feet and occupying your property longer than necessary. We strive to plan and build landscaping in as little

time as possible to ensure that you are provided with landscape design and installation of the highest quality.” If you are wondering if ALLPRO lives up to its reputation of providing “the elite service that you deserve,” as their website pledges, why don’t we ask the experts? National online home service guru, Angie’s List, was impressed enough to present ALLPRO with its “Super Service Award.” The Better Business Bureau, who analyzes and rates companies, according to both the quality of the service they provide and the complaints received about them, awarded ALLPRO Tree and Landscaping Inc. its highest rating, an A+! SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: TRAFFIC JAM IN SCHEDULING EXAMS By Dr. Wayne Adams For most of us, things are settling down a bit as we get used to our new routines with school (on-site and on-line), work, and moving ahead day by day. On October 14, high schools give the PSAT Exam, the only qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships. With the cancelations and delays of the regular SAT and ACT Exams from February – late August, a “traffic jam” has developed in scheduling for the fall. The first SAT on August 29 was for those students who had not been able to take the exam earlier in the year and did not take any additional reservations, according to several of my parents. In early September, one of my parents tried to make a reservation for the second SAT on Sept 26, and could not get a place for her student at that time.

14 OCTOBER 2020

The ACT scheduled exams on Sept 12 and 19, and they were jammed early. In October, they scheduled exams on Oct 10, 17, and 24. By Sept 8, the first two were fully reserved. Not long thereafter, the third exam was fully reserved. The remaining SAT and ACT dates for the next six months are as follows: SAT on Nov 7, Dec 5, and March 13. Note that there is a three month gap from Dec to March for the SAT. ACT on Dec 12 and Feb 6. I strongly recommend that anyone wanting to take one of these upcoming exams make a reservation as soon as possible. For seniors, the “rock solid” application date for UF is the first of November, with exam results due later in the month. UF might grant an extension into December because of the difficulties in scheduling exams in time. If applying to UF this fall

is a possibility for your student, I strongly recommend you call an admissions officer as soon as possible to get the most current information. Qualifying dates for taking the SAT or ACT Exam for Bright Futures remain the same. As a reminder, the minimum SAT superscore for 100% award increased 40 points to 1330 while the minimum ACT composite remains at 29. The minimum SAT superscore for the 75% award

also increased 40 points to 1210, while the ACT composite was reduced to 28. “Which exam is better to take?” is often I am asked by parents and students. Here are the key parts of my answer. 75% of my student prefer the ACT, and 25% the SAT. Usually, a student will score 15 percentiles higher on one exam or the other, but it is impossible to predict. Either exam is equally acceptable to colleges. If a student takes the ACT, usually the college does not require two or three additional SAT Subject Tests. Many colleges do require the additional Subject Tests if a student applies with the SAT Exam. There is about a 60% overlap between the two exams. The major differences are in Reading and Math. Of course, the ACT has a Science section, but it does not ask anything about Chemistry, Physics, Biology, etc. It is a different type of reading

test where you find answers in charts, graphs, experiments, and opinions of scientists. Almost all of my students and parents today prefer my on-site, Covid compliant, private classes. On occasion I do an online, but this is seldom and usually for a student who would have a long distance to drive (such as from the other side of Tampa or south St. Petersburg) or taking all classes on-line this fall. If You Would Like To Talk More With Me About Your Student … Please call 727253-0639 or send an email to wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 9 of the “Top 10” universities in the country, 18 of the “Top 25”, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton,

Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), University of Virginia, NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Air Force and Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. He recently also tutored three juniors who became national merit finalists with their scores on the PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Jazzercise Lutz: 10 “WHYS” OF EXERCISE

The Pandemic has taken its toll on our exercise plans by forcing us to stay at home and limiting the classes we can participate in. Here are some good reminders of the WHY we need to take care of our health with consistent exercise. In order for a goal to have a long-term effect, one must refer back to the relevance or the “why” behind the goal. When one puts actions into a greater context of the importance or relevance, it is easier to change the behavior by reviewing the significance of why one wants to make the change in the first place. The greater the detail of the reasoning, the more likely that

goal will not be abandoned. So before you give up on that goal of a healthier 2020, here are ten benefits of exercise based on research so that you may find your “why.” 1. Weight Control - Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Diet is the primary way to lose weight. Exercise is the primary way to maintain weight. A combination of healthy diet and exercise is the fastest, safest way to lose weight and keep it off. 2. Long-term Mortality - If you want to live longerexercise. A study published in the Journal of American Medical Association found that the risk of premature death of those with a sedentary lifestyle

was 500% higher than those who exercised. 3. Prevention of Muscle and Bone Density Loss - Both skeletal muscle and bone density declines with age. Sarcopenia is to muscle what osteoporosis is to bone. Loss can begin around age 40 with over half of muscle strength lost by age 70. Both can be reversed and improved with strength resistance training using weights, machines, resistance bands, and stability balls. One must incorporate strength training in with cardio for long-term health benefits. 4. Brain Health - Exercise has immediate effects on one’s brain. A single workout improves the ability to shift

and focus attention, increases the levels of neurotransmitters that boosts one’s mood, and improves reaction time. Consistent exercise has shown a direct link to lower the risk of depression. Exercise also improves long-term memory by producing new brain cells in the hippocampus. In addition, exercise protects the brain by strengthening the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, two areas of the brain most susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases and normal cognitive decline in aging. 5. Metabolic Rate - Exercise affects the metabolism by increasing the metabolic rate, which means

you burn more calories at rest. 6. Disease - Exercise boosts the HDL (High-Density Lipoproteins) and decreases unhealthy triglycerides, so it combats all health conditions and diseases- heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, depression, anxiety, many types of cancer, arthritis... 7. Flexibility - Exercise increases the range of motion for better flexibility and decreases stiffness in joint and the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. 8. Energy - By delivering more oxygen to the tissues and muscles in the body, exercise boosts your energy. 9. Sleep - Research has shown a greater heart rate dip between one’s waking and sleeping heart rate, the better sleep one gets. Exercise

increases the waking heart rate, which promotes better and deeper sleep. 10. Sex - Research has shown that regular physical activity may enhance arousal. The best part of all the research studies is that one can get the benefit of consistent exercise at any age; it is never too late to start! So even if you have let those aspirations, resolutions, and goals lapse since January, October is a great month to establish YOUR reason and “why” to get moving and then do it! Jazzercise does a body AND a mind good! We are offering zoom classes in your home if you are not ready to return to in-person classes in the studio. “Healthcare Associates” centers. His established relationships with area specialists allow him to expedite his patient care. Dr. Machhar’s patients have the peace of mind of knowing they can see him personally whenever the need arises. Echoing his father’s desire to provide a consistent continuum of care for patients is Dr. Raj Machhar, the son of Dr. Prakash Machhar. Dr. Machhar is pleased to announce that his board- certified internist son is joining the practice. Doctors Raj, and Prakash Machhar both believe it is the physicians role to care for their patients from the initial office visit, potential hospitalization, through out-patient care, to ensure their patients’ a continuum of healthcare. Using his expansive, specialized medical training, Dr. Raj Machhar sees himself as ‘the quarterback,’ employing his Ivy League training to identify and treat patient concerns or refer them to a specialist when necessary. Bringing his own extensive training from multiple prestigious institutions of

higher learning, specialized knowledge, background, and experience to this already outstanding practice, Dr. Raj’s membership in prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha in medical school is indicative of his abilities. In college, he graduated Summa Cum Laude, typical of one his many scholastic achievements, and evidence of his desire to be the best doctor possible. While preparing to enter the University of Florida’s Medical School in 2009, Dr. Raj Machhar had the honor of qualifying for their highly sought after Junior Honor’s Medical program, an honors, seven year accelerated program. He completed his residency at Cornell, receiving outstanding extensive training to further his education and experience. Rotations at Memorial SloanKettering, one of the nation’s most renowned cancer institutes, and Hospital for Specialized Surgery, the top-ranked hospital devoted to orthopedics and the care and treatment of arthritis, only enhanced his ability to help his patients. Dr. Prakash Machhar from this talented father and son team. “Dr. Machhar has been our physician for many years. He’s very caring and takes the time to explain and answer any concerns we have. We never feel rushed and we never wait more than a few minutes for our appointment. Dr. Machhar is very thorough with our tests and explaining the results. His staff is very

kind and professional, too. We’re very thankful we found Dr. Machhar when we did.” (Notice the emphasis on caring and taking time to explain results) Another of Dr. Machhar’s many satisfied patients wrote: “Dr. Machhar is very caring takes time to listen to you, he keeps you well informed about your meds, labs etc ,has very caring and knowledgeable staff. He will answer any of your questions at any time. I am so grateful he is my doctor.” “My husband and I have been going to Dr. Machhar for approx 7 years and we couldn’t be happier. He takes the time to get to know you and doesn’t do any service he thinks is unnecessary and refers to other medical professionals when needed.” “He cares on all levels. He is determined, but not bossy. He is what medicine used to be, he takes his time because he cares. He takes time to talk to you, to comfort or inspire better health for you. Me personally, my health issues require a lot of patience.” (Visit Healthgrades.com for 75 unsolicited reviews from his dedicated patients). Both doctors want their patients to know that it is

their choice to see patients in person daily, hands-on in their offices to provide that personal doctor/patient relationship. With covid-19 a strong consideration, they have taken certain positive, proactive steps to protect their patients from the disease. Scheduled appointments minimize potential exposure. Only one patient is in the waiting room at a time. A nurse advises patients, waiting in the parking lot, when it is their turn. Everyone must wear a mask. Temperature taking is also standard practice. Dr. Raj Machhar credits listening to and watching his father when he was a child as the impetus for him becoming a physician. He couldn’t follow in better footsteps. Some older patients are already looking forward to meeting him as a physician, after knowing him as a child. Dr. Prakash, his wife, Paresha, his son, Raj, and staff are here to assist your every healthcare need. Crystal is happy to help with her painless blood draws. All welcome the opportunity to show you that quality caring attention to your healthcare needs is their only treatment policy. Call for your appointment today at 727 815 1550, 6811 State Road 54 in New Port Richey. Just a short drive from anywhere in Pasco County.
