Shop Local This Holiday Season Holiday Shopping is in full swing, and while online purchases continue to thrive, Tampa Bay streets are getting packaged again, with more people visiting stores and shopping face to face than last year. Even though COVID19 is not entirely behind us, and in certain parts of the world, the numbers continue to rise, Tampa natives, tourists, and snowbirds alike seem to be ready to be out and about and celebrate big this holiday season. During the pandemic, online shopping became the norm. I cannot deny it was fast, convenient, and safe, but was it more affordable, and enjoyable? Not necessarily. Online shopping doesn’t always mean better price or better quality, so beware. I have never been a big fan of online shopping, and I usually end up returning most items. Don’t you miss interacting with real people? Touching things and trying them on to make sure you like them? But mainly, having someone offer their assistance in helping you find that unique gift for that special person? I enjoy being out socializing, and especially during the Holidays. You can feel magic in the air! The whole month of December is full of extraordinary, family-friendly events for you to enjoy. Many stores bring out their holiday merchandise and offer fantastic deals. Most local parks are beautifully decorated with lights and

As the holidays quickly approach, I am scrambling to complete my shopping in time. I find I am doing most of my holiday shopping online this year, and you may too. As holiday euphoria sets in, we want to be sure that we do not drop our guard when shopping online. Here’s a few tips to help improve your safety posture when it comes to giving others access to your money. First and foremost, do not use your computer for any financial transactions if you are not certain that your computer itself is functioning 100% free of any viruses, spyware, keyloggers, Trojans or any other dangerous software. If you question the integrity of your computer’s safety, you need to have it inspected by a certified professional. You have access to my professional analysts and technicians who thoroughly inspect and scrutinize your system for threats, so you can be sure you are ready for a safer online shopping experience. Second, make sure your computer is using robust anti-malware software solutions to protect you. Be sure you always keep that software up to date too. Third, be certain

you also keep your computer’s operating system up to date with all its latest tweaks and security patches. Any security breach discovered in your operating system can leave you exceptionally vulnerable to attackers. Fourth, not only does your computer need to be safe, the network it connects to must also be safe. Only shop online when you are connected to a network you trust. That means use your private home network not some public wi-fi hotspot at a park, restaurant, hotel, waiting room, etc. Any information that you type into any website can be seen and even collected by the owner of the hotspot; or even worse, a malicious attacker who has hacked and taken control of the hotspot. Online shopping from your private home network is a much safer bet than using any public hotspot. Fifth, use credit cards instead of debit

cards for your online purchases. Banks these days are pretty good about protecting their card users against fraud. However, if you should have an issue with a transaction, you’ll have less of a headache if you use your credit card instead of your debit card. Sixth, vet your vendors. Don’t just buy from any website. It is easy for criminals to set up websites. You may stumble onto some sketchy sites while you shop. Be discriminating when it comes to the websites you choose to enter your credit card number into. If your gut doesn’t feel right as you type in your card number… STOP! Only buy from online vendors you are comfortable with. Cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Protecting yourself online is your responsibility, but you don’t have to do it all by yourself. I’m here to help you. If you are not sure your system is safe, you need to have me look at it. Call 727534-4000 right now. We’ve been helping folks restore their peace of mind, and sanity, with their technology for decades. Want a money-saving offer or unique gift

SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: GETTING READY

By Dr. Wayne Adams As we move into December, all SAT and ACT Exams have been completed for fall, all of us are so happy we live in Florida during the winter … and we are getting ready for life after Christmas holidays! SENIORS are finalizing applications, wondering what happens next, and many are starting to work on bringing up their exam scores to qualify for the 75% Bright Futures Scholarship (about $18,000) or the 100% Bright Futures Scholarship (about $25,000). Many schools such as FSU, USF, and UCF, use “rolling admissions”, meaning you can apply and send your applications in the spring for consideration for the next fall freshman class. This is also true for many schools outside of Florida. For these SENIORS, I can help with a full prep course, or selected “skill strenghening” classes such as in math, the verbal sections, or (for the ACT) science. A current student working on SAT math told me at the end

14 DECEMBER 2021

of our first class, “I am really surprised there are so many tricks to solve problems much faster and get them right!” Yes, there really are! For JUNIORS preparing further ahead usually like to work with the full prep course, and many opt to prepare for both the SAT and the ACT with me. My students will usually score 15 percentiles higher one one exam or the other, but it is hard to know which until they have prepared for both. For SOPHOMORES, you would be surprised at how many calls I receive about starting early to be ready for the next PSAT. Often these students are aiming for “Top 25” schools, and for UF (now ranked #5 in the country for public universities according to US News and World Report). Some are also aiming for National Merit Scholarships, which bring additional scholarship funding plus schools love to have this level of student to enhance the school’s reputation. The next two exams are the ACT on Saturday, February

12, and the SAT on Saturday, March 5. SAT PREP USUALLY STARTS in early January with once a week classes, and if we start in early February with twice a week. ACT PREP USUALLY STARTS in late December or early January with twice a week classes. MY COMBINATION ACT AND SAT CLASSES also usually start in late December or early January with twice a week classes. In closing, I would like to share several surprise emails I received from my students and their parents. RECENTLY RECEIVED FROM PARENTS AND STUDENTS “When our daughter came home after your first class, she was so excited about all she learned. This is highpraise from her.” “Your helping with my reading and grammar really made the difference. Now I am well within the SAT range for admission to my dream school.” “Thank you so much for the four books/guides you sent us. I had no idea you could negotiate with colleges and reduce their costs so much. Your Negotiating with Colleges was eye-opening.” “Dr. Adams, we have just finished your course and I wanted to thank you for all you have done. Our student greatlly improved SAT scores. Plus you helped with so many life-lessons, insights into future career possibilities,

and how to get a really good start in college. You are more than a tutor, you are a great community asset.” If You Would Like To Talk More About Your Student … Please contact me at 727-2530639 or send me an e mail at wwa0811@mykolab.com. Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200+ points on the Writing, Reading, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 9 of the top 10 universities in the country, 18 of the top 25, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech, Naval - Air Force - Merchant Marine Service Academies, Penn State, LSU, Auburn, UF, U Miami, FSU, USF, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, FIU, New College of Florida, Stetson, and Julliard – Manhattan - New England - and Berkley Conservatories of Music. Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. Three of his students have qualified as national merit finalists on the PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Avid athlete Alexander Noti excelled in golf since his youth, leading to his selection as the Gregg Schindler Male Athlete of the Month for December. By Sofia Chianella Playing nine holes a day, seven days a week, for 11 weeks since the season started allowed J.W. Mitchell High sophomore Alexander Noti to complete roughly 700 holes of golf since the start of the 2021 school year season. With this type of commitment to the sport since the age of four, Noti frequently participates in golf tournaments, starting when he was eleven years old. Inspired by his father’s college career in golf, Noti has learned a great deal about the sport from his dad’s previous experiences. However, his father is not the only person that has been a role model. “My coach, Coach [Jeffery] Leavey, gotta give him the shout out, because he’s a really good dude. He helps us get things done, get onto the golf course, [and] he brings us food and stuff. He’s just a good dude,” Noti said. The feeling is mutual between the two golfers, as Leavey, a coach of 47 years, sees the talent and hard work that is achieved

From a Cadet to a Champion: Senior Alyssa Howry takes command in NJROTC and girls weightlifting By Emma Diehl December’s Gregg Schindler Club Member of the Month is Alyssa Howry, a senior at J.W. Mitchell High School who leads her peers in both the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and the girls weightlifting team. Howry joined the NJROTC program at Mitchell as a freshman, looking to explore her interest in the military. “I decided to join ROTC because I wanted to go into the military when I was growing up, and I thought it was a great way to serve my community, as well as my own interests” Howry said. After spending most of her high school career in the NJROTC program, Howry has become one of the staff members, helping to lead her peers in the program. “I am Command Master Chief, so I basically connect the entirety of our cadets to our staff,

20 DECEMBER 2021

meaning that if they have a problem, they come to me. If they need anything, they come to me first,” Howry said. After high school, Howry plans to continue pursuing her military career at the United States Coast Guard Academy. “I want to go to the Coast Guard Academy, and become an officer in the United States Coast Guard. I like their humanitarian missions, and their beliefs,” Howry said. In addition to her time with NJROTC, and a schedule that includes two Advanced Placement and two dual enrollment courses, Howry holds the position of team captain on the girls weightlifting team, and is a member of Interact club. Athletics inside and outside of NJROTC bring out Howry’s competitive nature. “Field meets and athletic competitions [are my favorite things]. [I like] field meets because it

one of Howry’s biggest influences is Ms. Stephanie Martanovic (FAC). “Mrs. Martanovic has been such a big help in everything that I have

done. She is our teacher sponsor for Interact, so I see her all the time, and she is wonderful,” Howry said. Ms. Martanovic had Howry in class when she took AP World History her sophomore year, and is now her adviser for the Interact Club. Commenting on Howry’s dedication to academics and serving her community, Ms. Martanovic had a message for Howry for the future. “Alyssa, I respect your integrity, maturity, and passion for service so much. I hope that you continue to always follow your heart and that you hold on to your integrity and self-confidence no

matter what challenges you face. I know that you have all the capabilities and ambition to achieve your goals, so remain focused and continue to be amazing,” Martanovic said. Congratulations to Alyssa Howry on her selection as the Gregg Schindler Club Member of the Month for December.

Who Doesn’t Love a Party? The Swag Party Rental Story! By Tom Bostock When the popular singing group, Rare Earth, recorded the lyrics, “I just want to celebrate another day of living,” it could have been an anthem for the times we live in. With the specter of the post Covid–19 pandemic scare finally receding in our lives, people all over the Tampa Bay area are tossing away the anonymity of their face masks and once again getting together to celebrate and relax in each other’s company. It is finally time to enjoy our return to normalcy. Let’s party! Preparing for a party gives you two options: wasting gallons of ever more expensive gasoline, visiting the local big box stores, wandering up and down countless aisles trying

22 DECEMBER 2021

to find that last item you need to make your party a success. Most times, that frustration only increases when you learn they either don’t stock the item, or it isn’t available for rental. The second and a much better, less tension filled alternative is Swag Party Rentals. When the owner, Lindsay Williams, wanted to throw a party this Summer in August, it surprised her that most everything she needed wasn’t locally available for rental. As a logical extension of her already successful Internet presence with Swag Marketing, a family run company, Swag Party Rentals, was born to meet that need for the entire community. “We save you time and make your life easier,”

Lindsay said enthusiastically. “We are local, reliable, and affordable,” she said, “firmly rooted in our community. Now that it is becoming safer and safer to have parties,” Lindsay noted, “people are starting to have parties again.” Swag Party Rentals caters

to small to midsize groups, and family gatherings, offering a variety of products, services, and entertainment options, suitable for every age group. With the corn hole craze sweeping the country, Lindsay offers the game and a popular version of step golf

story continued from page 1 of libido, hormone optimization can reverse these issues. “We really get into what is right for them and what they are trying to achieve. Ultimately, they look better, they feel better, and they are healthier.” As Covid-19 continued to flourish in 2021, Dr. Kerr was unsure how his practice would survive. Many clients flew in from out of town, and the pandemic halted those visits. But telemedicine opened up by the government for emergency use changed everything. “That was a godsend as we could see many people virtually around the country, but it didn’t last.” When Covid regulations were lifted, new patients could no longer set the first appointment via telemedicine. “We had to turn people away from out of state or far away when they changed the laws nationally if they were unable to travel to the office for their initial consult.” Luckily, the practice survived and thrived, solely through the support of his established and local patients who stuck by him during this uncertain time. “The people that we had stayed with us. We just couldn’t reach people out of state for their initial visit

virtually” he explained. “We recently had patients come back into the office, and we take the proper protocols in the office, so people don’t need to be afraid of Covid. I don’t want any of my patients to feel like they could catch something from my office.” Dr. Kerr changed his national positioning from patients across the United States and reinvented the practice to serve the local community better. He utilized telephone consults, and virtual tele-consults to provide continued support to existing patients unable to come into the office. “It’s really neat that I can be in my office and look and see their physical changes on a virtual meeting and have a conversation.” Dr. Kerr joked that the Zoom meetings were fun, but he saw a lot of dogs in the background. “There’s a lot of apologizing for barking dogs, but it’s neat to them that way, and, of course, I love to see them in person. We’ve been able to really keep our patient base.” Even during a critical supply chain delay, he ensured his patients’ treatment and necessary prescriptions didn’t falter. “Nothing suffered. We were able to medication to people just as timely as before. The pharmacy was wonderful. The people were wonderful. We just had to reinvent the practice to be

a local rejuvenation center. I just really want to thank the patients who stuck with us. They’re all good people, like friends to me. We’ve had a lot of people from the military, the police force,

and the golfing community – local good people who are taking advantage of our services. “That’s my favorite – I like to see my clients in person and talk like we used

to, and we’re starting to see that more and more. We give the patients the option now. Do you want to come in and do an in-office visit? Do you want to use technology and do a virtual visit, or a phone consult? They have options because sometimes, because of Covid, they might be home and not in the office. They’re wearing an AC/DC shirt and a baseball cap backward and don’t want to be seen, so I can talk to them on the phone, and they do not have to ‘prepare’ to see me.” Local clientele stretches from Trinity to Tampa Bay, St. Pete and beyond. “They’re driving to see us. It’s so cool. They traveled over that bridge and everything to see us,” he said. “It’s been very nice these last couple of months that people are getting more comfortable. The local community is great. I really appreciate my patients. People were so accommodating. It was really family-esque. I am so grateful to my clients for staying with me and giving me the ability to work. So many people stepped up, helped us, and supported us through this time. I just want to say thank you.” To learn more about Dr. Kerr and National Rejuvenation Centers, call (727) 785-5652 or visit www.nrcenters.com

Although breast cancer in men is rare, it does happen. In 2021, there were an estimated 2650 new cases among men in the U.S. resulting in 530 deaths (1:883).

East Lake Woodlands Drive for a Cure supports local efforts to spread awareness about breast health, assist with breast cancer screening, provide diagnostic services and treatment, and provide short-term financial assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatment. The event supports Love Thy Neighbor (L.Y.N.) Fund, which provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients in active treatment and recovery in Pinellas and Pasco Counties. and treatment for uninsured or underinsured patients in Pinellas County. Since 2007 the Drive has raised over $430,000.
