Do you feel like you’re not having the restful sleep you could be having? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Having a good night’s sleep is actually a huge problem for many people, especially when it comes to quality rest. According to Sleep Disorders Guide, about 18 million Americans are affected every year by sleep apnea, a common sleeping disorder that ranges from mild to severe. However, what makes things more complicated, is that 80–90% of these cases can go undiagnosed. Now while definitely troublesome, you may be wondering what sleep apnea has to do with dentistry... Well, thanks to experts like Dr. Shawn Douglas of Douglas Dentistry in Trinity, we have some answers and practical treatments available. If you’ve been told by your significant other that you snore loudly and are difficult to sleep near, and, if you are male, over the age of 40, and have a BMI higher than thirty, you may be at risk for

obstructive sleep apnea. While there are three different classifications of sleep apnea, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common. According to the Mayo Clinic, a person’s throat muscles will relax during OSA, making it extremely difficult for them to breathe. When this happens, their brain will wake them up to receive more oxygen. However, since they’re waking for only a short time, they may not even be aware of the problem. As a result, a person might gasp or choke for air or snore very loudly, which can also keep their loved ones from getting any rest. To make things worse, this unhealthy cycle of not breathing and suddenly waking with loud snoring or gasping can continue throughout the night, sometimes 30 plus times an hour.
