Compassionate Cosmetic Care in Tampa Bay with Dr. Manik Bedi By Tom Bostock The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed how professions engage with their clients and patients today. No profession has been more visibly impacted than medicine. In the forefront in protecting his patients from accidental exposure to this deadly threat is Dr. Manik Bedi of Tampa Surgical Arts. To assure his patients of the safety of his facili-
ties, considering the threat of the coronavirus, he has subjected everything to rigorous testing this month by the pre-eminent AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) as an additional safety precaution. It passed without question. Their certification confirms an organization’s commitment to provide safe, high quality service to all patients. To further reassure his patients during these trying

What if you woke up today with only the things you thank God for yesterday?
You don’t have to be a religious person to be thankful for all the things you’ve been blessed with. In many spiritual traditions, prayers of gratitude are considered the most powerful form of prayer. Through these prayers, people recognize the ultimate source of all they are, and all they will ever be. Feeling thankful can improve your health in both direct and indirect ways. Some research shows that the experience of gratitude can induce a sense of happiness and relaxation, which in turn improves the immune system, and decreases blood pressure! This November, let’s all vow to count our blessings each day. If you have kids, they should always be one of the reasons to feel thankful for daily. When you see them running around the house giggling, remember that joy, and take it all in, and thank whichever God or higher power you believe in that you have little bundles of joy that keep you on your toes and keep you going. Work on establishing a daily “thankfulness” routine in which you remind yourself of the gifts, benefits, and good things you enjoy and focus less on what you lack or what’s causing you stress. Try to consider simple things like the last time you enjoyed a homemade meal or had a great cup of coffee—did you pay attention to all the flavors or the feelings of pleasure as you took the first bite or first sip? It’s easy to ignore such small moments of positivity in our lives as we’re currently living in a constant state of panic and anxiety, but stopping to appreciate the simple pleasures makes them even more powerful. Practicing gratitude can also make you better equipped to handle difficult situations in your life, which naturally and inevitably arise, especially this year. My family and I have tragically lost not one, or two, not even three, but actually 6 close friends and relatives to COVID-19. We are also going through a tough financial situation, and to makes things harder, my health has retaken a bad turn with Lyme disease and Graves disease, but
I try to remain positive and smile through the pain. What are some things that make me feel personally thankful? A genuine smile from my little nephew, a long and warm hug from my mother, baking pumpkin bread with my sister, funny memes sent by a friend, cuddling with my cats while watching a romantic comedy…little things like that are what keeps me going these days. Setting aside a couple of minutes a day to recall moments of gratitude associated with ordinary events, your personal achievements, or all the amazing people you have in your life gives you the potential to live a more positive life with a true sense of gratefulness. Find yourself tethered to your cell phone or the internet for hours each day? Harness the power of this technology to send out some good vibes, such as a text or Facebook comment. Tell your followers, friends, and relatives who much you love and appreciate them. Into funny inspirational messages? I know I am! Why not share or write a daily gratefulness post? It might be cheesy but helpful! Words are compelling, and the more we remind ourselves of the good, the less we focus on the negative. If you find yourself struggling to come up with reasons to feel grateful for, why not try putting yourself in the shoes of someone less fortunate? I know we shouldn’t even compare our current situation with anyone else’s, but that’s not the point. Recalling someone who may have a debilitating physical condition, for example, may inspire gratitude for your own healthy body, which you may have taken for granted otherwise. Lately, with the limited use of my left arm, I still feel thankful that the right one is strong and able to type these words for you to read. With all that said, I am truly thankful for each one of you! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart to our readers and advertisers for your loyalty and readership; I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. May your plates and hearts always be full! Until next time,
Carla M. Dubis Tedeschi.

Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment Provides FREE Water Testing and FREE Second Opinions By Kelly Stuart Williams, MA Treating Hard Water Helps Your Budget and Extends the Life of Your Appliances. Servicing Pasco and Hillsborough Counties, Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment is locally owned and has been in business for 40 years, or as their slogan describes, “Treating bad water good since 1980.” Owner Jeffrey Crocker said that his company prides itself on honesty, and that’s how he got into the business in the first place. “Like many, I retired from a job up north and moved to the Tampa Bay area, where I quickly learned our
8 NOVEMBER 2020
new home required water treatment. Our first call to a company did not go well! They told us that our existing water softener was a “throwaway” model, and it would be $5000 for a new softener, then proceeded to charge us $98 for a service when they serviced nothing,” said Crocker. “My wife proceeded to Google “water treatment in Land O’ Lakes,” and when she spoke with Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment, they offered FREE water testing and offered an affordable water treatment solution AFTER they checked our water,” added Crocker. The Crockers were so impressed with the honest
Owners Jeff & Debbie Crocker treatment they received and the a water treatment system that solved the hard water problems that they asked the owner
if he was hiring. “I had retired and was looking for something to do, and the owner replied with, “Buy my business; it’s for sale,”
For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com
explained Crocker. After a two-month trial of working with the company and its many repeat (and happy) customers, Jeff and Debbie Crocker bought the company in 2015. Five years later, they are delighted to report they have grown the business
and have helped many residents “…improve the quality of their water for healthier, safe living and cleaner water.” Other clients on Google Reviews have shared similar experiences with the company. David L. wrote, “I just bought a property
that had a water softener system which I knew nothing about. I called several water treatment companies, and none would offer guidance on the operation. I called Jeff, and he was accommodating and sent Josh to my house, which he guided me through the process and set the unit up…many thanks to Jeff and Josh. If you need water treatment, call these guys.” Many customers of Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment are on well water that requires additional water treatment, though county and city water in the Tampa Bay area also remains hard (high mineral content). Minerals like calcium and magnesium accumulate in the water that has a wide range of adverse effects from spots on the dishes in your dishwasher to dry hair and skin on your body. Hard water quickly ages your appliances, because water-using appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters experience scale buildup that makes them work harder and become less efficient. Less efficiency causes more significant expenses in both the operation and maintenance of appliances, and that means greater expense in your energy bills. We asked Mr. Crocker if scaling and buildup are why we hear about water heaters bursting in Tampa Bay homes. “All appliances should be checked regularly for scale and buildup,” said Crocker, “We’ve even heard stories about pipes bursting
For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com
over time, and it’s not unusual to hear customers say that the water pressure (flow) is reduced in their pipes. That’s a tell-tale sign that your home needs water treatment,” he added. Customers of Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment characterize the company as being caring and honest, and Crocker said they understand that clients are looking for affordable pricing and dependable service. Crocker shared a story about a local celebrity who has become one of his repeat customers, “He called me while I was on vacation, and I told him that I would come over and take a look at his system—he couldn’t believe I would do that on my day off.” In a recent Google Review, Alicia S. wrote, “Helpful and knowledgeable about the equipment. The owner was interested in installing what was best for our household concerning the type of treatment and our budget. Thanks, Jeff!” Let Land O’ Lakes Water Treatment find out what is in your water! Call them today at 813996-4479 for FREE water testing. After the water analysis, they will recommend the best water treatment solution to improve your water quality. From Newcomer to States By Riley Curie
Tiffany Cain (’21), female Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency StudentAthlete of the Month, began her swim journey in her freshman year of high school. Since freshman year, Cain puts hard work in at every practice to improve her skills. In her final year on the swim team, Cain won conference with her team and will be competing in districts. Cain became a faster swimmer since her start on the team through long hours at practices and energy well spent. “I have dropped a lot of time since then, I have almost cut my previous 50 freestyle time in half, which is a large improvement for me. I have put a lot of time into practice since freshman year, swimming club yearround and swimming twice a day at practices during the high school season,” Cain said. During meets, Cain swims the 200 Individual Medley (IM) with her own personal record being 2 minutes and 27 seconds and the 100 breaststroke with a personal record of 1 minute and 11.23 seconds. At practices, the team does all kinds of training ranging from sprint sets to distance and technical training to try

With districts coming up, she hopes to qualify to compete in regionals with her team. “I know I’m going to districts and from there we will find out if I qualify for regionals. If I do qualify for regionals it will feel great going as a senior, as I went as a junior as well. It will be a super fun way to end my last season,” Cain said. Throughout her time on the team, Cain improved not only as a swimmer but improved in other aspects of her life. Spending time with her team made her more confident as an individual. “I have become more open and outgoing.
I have especially improved in talking to others that I don’t know and introducing myself. I also feel that I have grown as a leader, especially with helping the newer swimmers on the team,” Cain said. Cain used her newfound confidence and motivation to push
herself and become a better swimmer. With her developed skills, she automatically qualified for regionals based on her times at districts. At regionals, Cain qualified for the state meet with her time in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Powering past the course competition By Marina Saviceva-Noti
A year and a half ago, Evan Zhem (’23) began his golfing success story as an aspiring and determined incoming freshman. His sense of purpose and skill earned him the title of Gregg Schindler State Farm Agency October Male Student-Athlete of the Month. With a scoring average of 39 on nine holes, Zhem puts in the work to help his team with his low scores and a positive attitude. “I will hit golf balls on the range and work on whatever is wrong with my game whether that is chipping or putting or something else. I’m motivated by beating my opponents and shooting a certain score,” Zhem said. Zhem keeps improving as he progresses with golf, this year placing third in his individual 18-hole conference championship with a 77, and twelfth in the district 18-hole championship. His nine-hole average dropped five strokes from freshman year as a 44. Mr. Jeffery Leavey took over the head coaching job last season and now leads the team with five wins and three losses during matches. “Evan is an outstandingly talented golfer who works every day to make himself better,” Leavey said. Zhem plays as a valuable asset to the team, being

And for him, there is always room to improve in golf, including his mental game. “The hardest part about golf is that you just relax after hitting a bad shot. If you get too mad, you won’t recover. Golf has impacted my life by showing me how to relax in life and just have fun,” Zhem said. Through golf’s challenges, Zhem manages to keep a strong spirit and doesn’t give up on the course. His team and coach help each other by practicing together, offering advice, and working hard during matches. While
on the range, Coach Leavey critiques the players’ swings to help them improve while Zhem gives tips to newer players on the team. “We are good friends. We help each other out if we have problems and we just talk about stuff, mostly from school. Our coach has been a big help by teaching me and the other players how to relax and have a good mental game,” Zhem said. Zhem expresses resolution that the team can have future success in matches, conference, and beyond. His limitless patience and positivity spread to

his teammates and competitors, with exceptional sportsmanship and ability. “I think our team did a really good job [this year]. We can always improve but overall it was good,” Zhem said. As for personal goals, Zhem plans to continue playing golf and become a professional golfer. He does have a backup plan but is set on playing golf beyond school with a scholarship to college from his golf skills. “I hope to be a professional golfer, I have to believe I can be one,” Zhem said. SAT AND ACT IMPROVEMENT: PSAT/SAT/ACT BLUES AND GOOD NEWS By Dr. Wayne Adams
About this time each year, I receive many calls from parents and students about what I call the “PSAT/SAT/ ACT Blues”. The cause is that a strong student, often in IB, multiple AP classes, or dual enrolled, did not score at the level expected on the PSAT, SAT, OR ACT in October. The inevitable questions are “Why”, and “What can we do about it?” THREE MAJOR REASONS STRONG STUDENTS DON’T SCORE WELL In my experience tutoring SAT and ACT over the years, there are three major reasons. Reason #1: Most high school students lack key fundamentals such as having
18 NOVEMBER 2020
had phonics, grammar, “recall” vocabulary, critical thinking, and the mathematics needed to do well on these exams. Without the ability to pronounce words, students avoid them or forget the definitions quickly. Most students cannot write a topic sentence, support an argument logically with reasons other than personal experience, and often are not able to correctly use basic punctuation such as commas and semicolons. Reason #2: Educational directions in most high schools do not match what is required to do well on the SAT and ACT. Pre-calculus, most geometry, and most algebra courses poorly prepare for these exams. Recently, I tutored a 7th grader who had
not had algebra or geometry. His baseline score as we started was 375. When he took the actual ACT exam, he scored very close to a 600 in math. Writing essays in high school are often an exercise in how long a sentence or a paragraph can be, thinking this shows academic achievement. In fact, it shows an inability to focus thoughts, to structure a clear argument, to use topic sentences supported by logical and memorable sentences, and to build a coherent conclusion that leaves a reader wanting “more”. Yet this is what is required for the SAT and ACT essays. Reason #3: Most Prep Classes in high school are woefully inadequate. Recently, I learned that a leading private
high school used the worst SAT prep book on the market today and the students were bored to death. In other words, prep classes are seen as “fluff” breaks between the real “academic” work at school … yet the SAT and ACT results often have more impact on students’ future (admissions and scholarships) than most classes in high school. WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT The Good News: I consistently find that students respond incredibly well and improve when they become both teacher and student as in a college seminar at the junior or senior level where I am their coach. My role is to quickly help them determine where they need to work
For Advertising Info 727-943-0551 I info@nnlflorida.com or visit tbnewsandlifestyles.com
and to be a resource as they progress. Lecturing is no substitute for determining a student’s baseline level and then structuring their learning around their needs. It very satisfying to see their motivations soar when their perspective changes from “Can I do this?” to “I can do this well.” and then to “Let me show you how well I can do.” They discover that real competition is internal and - when they do their best - external results take care of themselves. Learning the strategies often result in comments like, “Cool” and “That makes it a lot easier”. More important, they learn how to “learn for a lifetime.” REWARDING COMMENTS Working with a senior athlete for the past several
months, it was great when she told me, “I have been offered a $32,000/year academic scholarship at a great school and they also want to offer more on the athletic side.” “I just got news that I have been early-accepted to my dream school, Princeton.” “Dr. A., thank so much for helping me with my college application essay. Your changes and additions, not to mention cutting its length, were incredible. Thank you!” “Our family is working together through your book How To Survive And Thrive As A New Freshman At A Secular University. Things have changed a lot since we went to college. Thanks for helping us prepare for what is coming soon.”

Dr. Wayne Adams is one of the leading SAT and ACT tutors in the country. His students normally improve 200 – 350 points on the Writing, Reading, Writing and Essay, and Math, and 4 – 7 points on the ACT composite. They have been admitted to 8 of the top 10 universities in the country, 18 of the top 25, and many schools in Florida. These schools include Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, U Chicago, Duke, U Penn, Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Notre Dame, Emory, UC Berkley, UCLA, USC, UNC (Chapel Hill), NYU, Northeastern (Boston), Boston College, Georgia Tech,

Many have received academic, athletic, or music scholarships. This year, he also tutored three juniors who scored at the national merit finalist/semi-finalist levels on the most recent PSAT. He is a former Dean of a Graduate School of Business and Full Professor, and began college teaching at the University of Maryland in 1968. He has degrees and advanced studies at Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Columbia International, and Luther Rice.

Tech Talk with Bob: CORONAVIRUS CYBER CRIME Leave it to society’s lowest form of dirtbags to take advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable. The Coronavirus Pandemic has given cyber criminals yet another platform in which they can snatch your money and contaminate your computer with dangerous malware leaving it in a precarious state. My friends, I urge you to be on the lookout for these cyber scams. It is not my intent to frighten you but rather to make you more vigilant and aware of steps you can take to protect yourself and the people you care about. The COVID-19 outbreak will certainly increase cyber criminals’ email phishing campaigns in the coming months. As you spend more time at home you will probably be spending more time online. While online, please, be wary of any links you click.

There may be coronavirus computer attacks poised for attack in your email’s inbox right now. It’s just a matter of whether you will click the link or delete the email. I’ll bet you are getting emails from many of the companies you deal with in regard to how they are reacting to this pandemic. Especially watch out for the emails you may receive from companies you DO NOT do business with. If you get an email from a bank you have never done business with, beware. Why would they send you an email? You may also be getting emails from helpful friends and family that may include links to news stories, medical information and so forth. Emails made to look like they come from credible companies, organizations, and other familiar entities can be spoofed (faked) to look like they came from a trusted source.
Embedded in these phishing emails might be links offering to connect you to another website with more information. Please think twice before you click that link. If for any reason you are not sure you can trust the link, then do not click it. We have the ability to provide support without needing to send an IT Specialist out to your home or office. We can safely remote access your computer to perform most repairs. We can also remotely perform complete scans for viruses and other malware issues. So if you think you have malware, we can scan for it remotely from our location to yours. So, during this pandemic, we can still provide technical support to you over your phone and internet connection. Cyber criminals will exploit the easy victims and unprotected systems. Protecting yourself online is your responsibility,
but you do not have to do it all yourself. We’re here to help. If you are not sure your system is safe, please have it looked over by a Professionally Certified IT Specialist. tient’s BMI (body mass index) should not exceed thirty. BMI is an indicator if the body mass is too fat, too thin, or a healthy amount. It considers height as an important factor. Standard liposuction differs from that performed by Dr. Bedi. It removes body fat but does not reinject it. Dr. Bedi’s HD process eliminates controlled amounts of stubborn fat from problem areas (belly fat, hips, etc.) that remain untouched by normal training and routine physical exercise. Muscles, previously concealed by the body fat,
become visible. The strategic removal of fat sculpts the body, but it is not a substitute for weight loss, Dr. Bedi warned. The process only removes about eight pounds of fat, the amount safely extracted by a single high definition surgical procedure. The surgical procedure allows the surgeon a chance to exercise his artistry and creativity as he sculpts his patient’s body. The liposuction equipment, used by early pioneers like French surgeon Charles Dujarier (1920) and gyne-
cologists Arpad and Giorgio Fischer (1974) (www.lipo. com), bear little resemblance to the sophisticated equipment used by Dr. Bedi’s body sculpting processes today. Terms like power-assisted lipo (PAL), vibration amplification of sound energy resonance, (VASER) are just two of the devices he employs. PAL uses a special canula that, according to lipo.com, pulses while it suctions. Another tool, VASER, is a device that helps liquify fat before removal. Dr. Bedi noted that he has these and other tools

available today. Another device, JPLASMA, uses helium to tighten the skin. These high-tech devices ensure maximum results from all of Dr. Bedi’s body sculptures. Dr. Bedi has several new innovations for his patients. The Brazilian Butt Lift is the transfer
of fat to enhance and shape the buttocks. Hi definition ‘liposculpture’ sculpts the body using both the VASER tool and J Plasma technology. While the corona virus has interrupted his upcoming marriage plans, he remains an active part of the community. Dr. Bedi takes part
in the “Feed America of Tampa” program that helps under-served residents of the Tampa Bay area, working with local groceries, distributing vegetable and other foodstuffs. During my interview with Dr. Bedi, he mentioned what he called the ‘pillars’ that guide and sustain his practice. Each had a special significance. The first was an unexpected gesture. After a patient wakes up from surgery, Dr. Bedi installed a smoothie machine that provides his patients with a vegan-friendly, healthy, nutritious pick-me-up option before leaving–an unexpected gesture. Of second and equal significance was a memorable experience, achieved by the actions of both the doctor and his caring staff from

their first contact to make the initial appointment through final recovery-a memorable experience. Dr. Bedi vows to “make his patients comfortable, every step of the way”creating a memorable experience. Most important to Dr. Bedi was changing lives. That is what he is all about. Changing or improving a person’s appearance can also give them the self-esteem that they previously lacked, a new self-image. In the Tampa Bay area, you can probably locate other plastic surgeons, but you will never find a more credentialed, qualified, or caring practice than Tampa Surgical Arts.
