Fly Casting Clinics and instructional courses will be offered at two Long Island State Parks. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on Basic Fly Casting on Saturday, March 16th, at Caleb Smith State Park in Smithtown, and Saturday, March 23rd, at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale. Clinics are rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. The clinics are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include: basic casting instructions, equipment needs and selection, flytying and conservation and safety techniques. The registration fee is $4 per person at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve, and there will be no vehicle use fee in effect. There is no registration fee at Connetquot River State

Park Preserve; however, a vehicle use fee of $8 per vehicle will be in effect. Reservations are accepted two weeks prior to each clinic. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. The school offers a series of ongoing instructional classes for groups and individuals in basic to advance freshwater and saltwater fly fishing and casting techniques, stream entomology and still water (pond) techniques. Stop World Hunger, Inc. is pleased to announce its schedule of tennis events for the 2013 season. This year marks the 33rd year of Stop World Hunger’s charity tennis events for famine relief. All funds are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest.” Currently, the World Food Programme estimates that 2.6 million children die annually of hunger-related causes. When it comes to starving children, the only acceptable number is zero. First up for the 2013 is the Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Party. Scheduled for Saturday evening, March 23rd, it takes place at Carefree Raquet Club in North Merrick. The tennis party lasts from 8 p.m. to midnight. Players are

Cuomo has recognized March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of innercity boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy New York City streets to enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country! Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer

Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children for one or two weeks or more in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass

or gaze at the star-filled skies.” Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. QUESTION: What are pit and fissure sealants? ANSWER: Pit and fissure sealants prevent decay in children's teeth. In this procedure, the dentist applies a clear or shaded plastic coating to the biting or chewing surfaces of the back teeth. These molars have natural grooves and depressions (pits and fissures) where plaque and food particles collect. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting the decay-prone areas of the back teeth from plaque and acids. Studies have shown the sealants can reduce tooth decay by as much as 90% to 100%. Applications are usually simple and fast, often requiring only a few minutes for each tooth. The teeth to be sealed are cleaned and swabbed with a solution that helps the sealant adhere to the tooth surface. The sealant is then brushed on and allowed to harden. Some sealants require exposure to a special light to help them harden. Other sealants do not.

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Established on the Feast of St. Patrick, March 17th, 1913 in a 13-bed former sanitarium in Hempstead by the Congregation of the Infant Jesus, the Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, Mercy has grown and developed over the decades into one of Nassau County’s leading medical institutions. The mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, who expressed thanks for the century of compassionate care made possible at Mercy by the hard work and dedication of not only the hospital’s physicians, nurses and support staff, but also The Friends of Mercy and the Council of Leagues auxiliary organizations, community residents and the continuing inspiration provided by the members of the founding Congregation. Guests, staff and friends of South Oaks Hospital recently gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of Jennings Hall as the hospital’s new home for inpatient detoxification and rehabiltation programs. “In 2009, The Long Island Home closed the assistive living program at Jennings Hall and the building has remained dormant, awaiting redesign and repurposing to meet the demonstrated need of our inpatient rehabilitation and detoxification programs,” said Robert E. Detor, president and chief executive officer of The Long Island Home, the parent of South Oaks Hospital. Mr. Detor credited the joining of The Long Island Home with the North Shore-LIJ Health System as a major factor in bringing this plan to fruition. He thanked staff who participated in the planning and design

processes, as well as the compassionate and efficient manner that clients were moved into the new space.” The Chemical Dependency Program at South Oaks Hospital has earned worldwide recognition for its effectiveness in treating adults in the community to overcome alcohol and drug issues through their Detoxification and Rehabilitation programs. In keeping with its mission, We Care for People, and with a core focus on quality of life, South Oaks Hospital opened the newly redesigned environment, Jennings Hall, to promote healing and recovery. The program will be able to provide treatment and better serve 52 individuals, 24 beds allocated to detoxification and 28 for rehabilitation. “Jennings Hall is a beautiful building outfitted with warm and vibrant décor with considerable natural light, nice

accommodations, space for meetings, dining and lounge facilities,” said Jean Jackson, the program’s administrative director. In warmer weather, the scenic outdoor patio will surely be a favorite gathering place. In speaking to the staff, Christine Moran, the hospital’s vice president of behavioral health services, said, she was impressed by the teamwork of staff from each department who worked collectively to get the new building up and running. “The renovated facility is bright and spacious, allowing for more diversified group and activity options,” she said. Staff at South Oaks Hospital looks forward to serving the community in this new warm, caring and supportive environment. We take pride in our ability to enact positive change for countless individuals who will begin their path to recovery and a brighter future at Jennings Hall.

I had put off doing it because I knew it would be hard. The rest of the work of boxing up the “stuff” was finished. Only her closet remained. It was filled with her clothes, shoes, hats, purses...the things that defined my mother to the world. Everything was hung neatly, categorized by seasons, some placed into “outfits”, everything neat and pressed and ready to wear. Everything smelled like her, looked like her...this was her personal space. It had been several months since her death and I thought I was doing pretty well. And I was, until I opened that closet. I wasn’t ready for the pain. Grief swept over me like a tidal wave and knocked me to my knees. My mother was gone. She was really dead.

writers presentation. Ms. Kelly focused her presentation on strategies and techniques that will help parents assist their children in becoming better writers. Following the presentation, parents joined their children in the classrooms to work on a writing activity that allowed the parents to utilize the strategies they learned in the workshop.

Youth Conservation Dates Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative, a twoday, hands-on programs on hunting safety will be offered in April by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education unit, the agency announced today. The Hunter Safety Course will be offered on April 20th and 21st at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville.

Both events are being sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education unit, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-ofstate sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. It

includes the streamlining of hunting and fishing licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said

DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “These youth education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State. DEC applauds our local sportsmen and women, the Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club for their tireless work towards the protection of our environment and natural resources. The

2013 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce children to hunting ethics and to teach them how to be responsible hunters.” Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75word application. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate or Bow Hunter Education

Training Certificate. These certificates are required in order to purchase a hunting license. Enrollment in the class is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken either their Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education course.
