FLAPJACK FUNDRAISER - Approximately 30 Amityville Memorial High School students took over Applebee’s in Farmingdale and served, hosted, bussed tables and cashiered during a Flapjack Breakfast hosted by the restaurant to raise money for the school’s annual Tour of Historical Black Colleges. Students raised approximately $1,100 in profits and also sold T-shirts, all to benefit the tour, normally taken in the fall.

Today Suffolk County Legislative Majority Leader and 15th district legislator DuWayne Gregory hosted a Clergy Roundtable Breakfast at Saint Boniface Episcopal Church with 12 of his district’s religious leaders. Students in the seventh through ninth grades at Edmund W. Miles Middle School recognized the 14th of March, better known as Pi Day, with their third annual pi competition. Nearly three-dozen students participated in the event, which challenged individuals to learn as many digits of the mathematical constant as they possibly could. “It is a fallacy to think that only higher-level students can memorize a lot of information,” said Amityville mathematics director Claude Irwin. “Our conversation with the students surrounding this exercise spoke to testing

the limits of the brain. App’s and technology make us lazy but we are capable of so much more.” Student Esteban Idrovo took the gold, having memorized an incredible 211 digits. “Practice makes perfect,” Esteban said attributing his success to his five to six hours of practice and memorization. Tied for second place were seventhgrader Jerinna Solages and Keith Nieves, a ninthgrader. Both students were able to recite an impressive 93 digits. The school’s all-time record is 257. All winners were awarded with a gift certificate and, of course, pecan pie.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that the State Cup will kick off this spring on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. 711 teams from the East End of Long Island to north of Albany have entered the State Cup and are vying to become state champions. “We are looking forward to wonderful competition, hopefully to be played in abundant sunshine this spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer. As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

Congratulations to coach Reynolds Hawkins and the Amityville Memorial High School Varsity Boys Winter Track team for winning the Suffolk County Small Schools Championship. the 300-meters, the long jump, and was a member of the winning 4x200 relay team. Teammate Artneil Reid, also a member of the winning relay team, finished second to Vincent in the long jump. Rounding out the relay team were Kaashief Morgan and Stiven Nunez. Jahmal Burt won the triple jump for the Warriors at the county tournament and finished sixth overall in New York State. and David Holmes scored points in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing second and fourth, respectively, to add to the team’s winning total. The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to Ease The Burden And Find The Cure. Founded more than 51 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him. Part of the reason is that they are less likely to take good care of themselves due to time and money constraints imposed by caregiving. Caregivers may not have the time for regular checkups, may not fill a prescription due to cost, miss sleep or forget to eat healthy meals. It’s very important for caregivers to recognize their own limits. Here are a few tips to help: • Find out about caregiving resources in your community. • Don’t do it alone. Ask for and accept help. Ask family members to do their share. • Simplify your life and reduce other sources of stress. Make “to do” lists. • Stay in touch with family and friends. • Join a support group. • Make time to get away and have fun. • Consider home care supportive services.

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed, NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral - speak to an attorney and fill out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Keep in mind that giving someone control of your final disposition may very well include giving them financial obligation of paying for the funeral expenses.
