Motivational speaker Rohan Murphy addressed fifth-graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School about achieving their dreams. Murphy, a personal trainer, power lifter and championship wrestler also happens to be a bilateral double amputee, which makes his story all the more incredible. “Everyone and anyone can be successful,” said Murphy, who placed high emphasis on the necessities of setting goals and working hard to achieve them. “No excuses! Think before you speak next time you are about to complain or give a reason for not wanting to do something. If I can do it so can you!” After being born with leg deformities that forced him to have amputations at the age of four, Murphy had inherited a seemingly hopeless situation. But as he explained to his listeners, he made certain that he would succeed in life no matter what.

During his freshman year at East Islip High School he began to wrestle and eventually went on to wrestle at Penn State University. Murphy also represents the United States as a power lifter in competitions worldwide. Students were shown a video clip of a 20/20 interview in which Murphy expounded upon his athletic career, working with Nike on their “No Excuses” campaign and how he turned his struggles into a powerful message of perseverance. “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward,” said Murphy, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The session concluded with a question and answer segment in which students asked Murphy indepth, prepared questions about his life, triumphs and goals for the future.

Being Domestic By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.

Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when

you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

Dog Tales Students at Edmund W. Miles Middles School in Amityville participated in Dog Tales 2 Literacy Night, a program that partners students and their families with therapy dogs from Bideawee, a leading pet welfare organization on Long Island. Special guests Abbie Jane, Baci, Oakley and Timmy, along with their owners, visited the school where participants were given thousands of books to choose from to read to their newfound friends. The evening began with a dinner provided by the Amityville Parent Teacher Council. Attendees then made their way to four classrooms where their canine visitors awaited. Students had a tremendous selection of books, which were provided by Amy Zaslansky of The Book Fairies, a local nonprofit organization

that redistributes gently used children’s books to schools on the island. Author Tony Abbott also donated signed copies of his books for the occasion. The Bideawee Reading to Dogs Program currently partners with nine schools and 17 libraries on Long Island. Teachers report that children participating in the program demonstrate improved reading skills, decreased school absenteeism, increased frequency in the completion of homework assignments and improved self-confidence. “It was a grand success!” said EWMMS Library media specialist and literacy team coordinator Lynn Cesiro. Additionally, the thousands of donated books from the program have found new homes with students for them to enjoy.

Gum tissue has two parts. The lining or surface tissue and the dense connective tissue that lies under it. The History of Johnstons’ Wellwood Funeral Home

Once upon a time, Richard H. Johnston became a funeral director, married Irene Happ, and moved to the village of Lindenhurst from New York City. Then came World War II, and he was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he worked as a funeral director at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Morgue. In 1958, Richard H. and Irene Johnston opened a funeral home. They moved above the funeral home with their three children to be readily available to families at any hour. About ten years later, Richard H. and Irene retired to Florida, and their son, Richard, who was now home from service in the U.S. Air Force in Germany during the Vietnam War, took over the business. One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent to interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is that there are more ashes on shorelines than in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved one’s ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that Mom has passed and now they need Dad’s ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. PACT Program Donation

The Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) was named the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Foundation Philanthropic Action for Challenging Times (PACT). The program is in partnership with Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, and the grant will help sustain LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program. Adelphi’s PACT is an extra-curricular initiative of the School of Social Work supported by the Riley Family Foundation through which undergraduate social work students engage in philanthropy as a means of social investment for social impact. PACT partners with nonprofits for the purpose of supporting the core mission of social work and to provide opportunities for young social work professionals to engage in philanthropic ventures. “This year, our students were interested in funding agencies that serve the Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Uniondale communities and offer community-based prevention and intervention programs for children,” stated Adelphi University BSW Program Director Sergio Argueta. “We are pleased to support a program that not only meets that criteria, but is active in engaging highrisk youth in our communities in such a positive way.” BUDDY is a mentoring program for children that have an incarcerated parent or close relative, and live in Nassau and Western Suffolk Counties. The children, or “mentees,” are matched with screened and trained adult volunteers who meet one-on-one on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of

establishing a trusting relationship. The mentees and mentors meet for at least a year, but in many cases, the matches are so successful that they continue to meet well beyond the required amount of time. The program currently serves a total of 42 children through direct matches. Beyond the initial matches, the program provides fun and educational opportunities to children through community events and celebrations. In the past month, BUDDY hosted trips to the Autoseum and the Ringling Brothers Circus. In addition, events like the Holiday Celebration and Back-to-School Picnic meet not only the social needs of the kids, but provide much needed school supplies, Christmas gifts and winter clothing. LICADD’s Community Engagement Coordinator Lauren Ventimiglia, LMSW, who facilitates mentor trainings and matches, explained why she loves working with the BUDDY program, “Our mentors meet with these kids a few hours a week, and might seem like such a small thing but it’s much more than that. In most cases, our mentees aren’t receiving that positive support at home. For our kids, it’s an opportunity to break free from the stress of having a parent in jail- they have time to be a kid again.” Children of incarcerated parents often experience a range of emotions related to a parent’s arrest and/ or incarceration, including fear, anger, sadness, abandonment, embarrassment, guilt, resentment, isolation and withdrawal from family and friends. Family

instability, trauma linked to witnessing the parent’s arrest, incarceration and/or criminal activities and uncertainty about the future challenge even the most resilient children. BUDDY seeks to break the cycle and ensure that Long Island’s most at-risk children get the help and encouragement they need to be successful. Without assistance, many of these children are at increased risk for poor academic performance, drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and juvenile justice or criminal justice system involvement. “Thanks to the generosity of Adelphi’s PACT students, we can continue to make sure that these resources are available,” stated LICADD Executive Director Jeffrey Reynolds, Ph.D., CEAP, SAP. “It is particularly inspiring to learn that the support of BUDDY and our mentees came from college students as they are the future leaders of Long Island. I find it encouraging to see our young people so willing to share their time and resources in order to help others in their community.” Interested in Learning More About BUDDY?
